Root discussion(Think tank) - Droid Turbo 2 General

It's still early and I have a feeling it will take a while until we have some form of root (if at all), but where should we start? I personally do not know the first place to start, but if anyone out there has any ideas, feel free to discuss them here.
I would like to make a bounty, but it seems like the trend has been a purchase is required to get root.

lol, I was wondering when one of these threads would start up.
Do we even know if any of the normal parties will be working on root for the dt2?

I was tinkering with the Moto BL unlock site yesterday. Actually got it to the point where I could get the "request unlock key" to show, but would fail upon clicking that to actually getting the emailed key

I hate to be Debbie Downer. But yea.... dont buy this phone is you're expecting root or an unlocked bootloader to happen any time soon.

I know, its a shame. I absolutely LOVE moto devices, but have to seriously rethink since they seem to have stopped releasing dev devices

Anyone know if Wondershare will root it? I've rooted my tablets with that one click root process before, but not with my DT2 yet. I have my DT2, but not sure why I'd root when there is no development for it yet. btw my DT1 with LP wouldn't root with Wondershare.

The Link is useless as are the Moto chat employees.
They left me realizing the unlock and root may be WAAAY down the road.
I root for the good apps as Verizon talked me out of my unlimited data. where is titanium????
The hotspot app of theirs (V's) does work out of the box. it just eats Data.... Ive been mad for a year over my decision. I MAY refuse the box in the morning just over Moto's shenanigans on not letting me unlock a $700 phone I paid for direct. FOOLS...

Again, mobile hotspot doesn't work if you have unlimited data. Since it took about 6 months for the original Turbo to get mofo root, I have a feeling it's gonna take just as long, if ever. They still haven't found a way to write to the system within an image.
It's a shame, they got you good with getting you on a tiered line, and of course they're gonna give free mobile hotspot to tiered users for that exact reason that it eats up data. It gives you a greater chance of going over your data cap, therefore, putting more money into Verizon's greedy little pockets.
I usually average around 75GB a month, so there's no way I will EVER voluntarily give up my unlimited data. They're gonna have to pry it from my cold, dead hands before I ever give up my unlimited data.

Did you use another program such as FOXfi? Or did you just use what was built in? If you use a third party program I don't think at&t can detect?? Maybe? I have been using a third party program and they haven't said boo. But then again I haven't really been accessive with my data. Your thoughts on this? Thanks.

Android's built-in tethering can't avoid detection, but some alternative methods can. Here is one that can avoid detection (USB tethering only though): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether
It won't show up on your phone's Play Store because AT&T blocked the app for all their devices, but you can sideload it.

Mmm tethering. I've always found it ridiculous that carriers charge so much for it, when it is a capability inherent to the phone you paid for.

Yes you can bypass the carriers restrictions or use a ROM that doesn't have restrictions but sure enough the carriers have a way of finding out. So be cautious. AT&T, for example may send you a warning but if they don't or you don't heed the warning they can slap on the tether plan or worse yet cancel your service. So again be careful.

Voice calling is a capability inherent to the phone but we all gladly pay anywhere from $20 to $200 every month for it.

The reason why the phone companies behave this way is because all the profits made by them come from the data plans. Not a single one makes money on voice plans so they get a little jealous when one does something that takes money out of their pocket. We as consumers do have a say, its called going to a competitor if one doesn't like a provider, control how much you spend till your contract is up then leave.

It does already, but I guess the T-Mobile app reports to them if your phone is rooted. If it is I guess T-Mobile can terminate your phone warranty and your insurance. At least that's what the thread says. I'm not to worried because I uninstalled that stuff. Dunno if this is legit though.

Not exaxtly. The old app just ran a diagnostic that happened to tell you if you're rooted. The new app will actually request root access and report findings to T-Mobile.

I've never had an issue with tmobile carrying about a phone being rooted I've traded in rooted phones and gone through insurance to replace rooted phones. I doubt they care. Store manager by me is running a custom rom on his own phone
Use Xposed RootCloak and it will hide root from T-Mobile App. When I hit diagnose it says my phone is not rooted. That is if you guys care to use the app, of course.
If you're rooted, why not just remove the app completely? Freezing it is fine too, but if you know it's 100% safe to remove...
Also, this "technology" is and has already been in use... It's called Carrier IQ or Caller IQ. Typically, this is only used to report you if you are searching for bad things on the interwebz... IE, how to make a bomb, kiddy porn, etc.
Additionally, you are protected under the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act", and cannot be denied a warranty claim, regardless of Root, within reason of course... Please see this post for reference and further info:

How to remove ads

I like the retail note 4. The screen is fabulous and its fast. However I cannot get by being inundated by the advertisments. Some are full page when I open aps and others flash at the top or bottom of the screen. Very distracting.
Is there an ap or a way to eliminate or at least remove most of the ads. Please be specific. I have gone back to my rooted, unlocked note 2. Will return the 4 if I cannot resolve this issue on the retail 4.
Unfortunitly I do not want to spend 700 for a DE note4. Thanks

I have a 180 day free trial code for the Pro version that I haven't activated yet so if someone wants it let me know.
until there is Root, there's not much you can do about it. Adblock Plus works if you're on wifi, but I noticed that it sucks more battery power and makes the phone run hotter than usual.
My solution was to sell my Retail note 4 (since with all the rebates, I only paid $100 for it), and buy a DE Note 4.

A cheaper (temporary) solution would be to use your apps in 'Airplane Mode,' assuming it is not too much of an inconvenience :good:
I usually do this when there is no paid version for an app/game :3
In hindsight I guess that it's pretty obvious lol but I'm going to leave it here anyways

I made thread covering adguard and works great. Developer even jumped in thread to explain. It creates it's own vpn.Only way to block ads on a unrooted device. Adblock will only work on WiFi without root. AdGuard works on both WiFi & Cellular!

Got to admit it, Adgaurd is working awesome. I activated the the pro trial version and it's blocking everything MOAAB or Jrummys ad blocker did. Ads and themes are the main reasons I root. Fears and Rooting

I have always rooted my phones. I've walked out of the Sprint store and rooted my last phone after getting a refurbed phone from insurance. This time with my new note 4, it seems different. I am half afraid to because of the Knox tripping. What happens if say in 1 year my phone has some sort of issue and I need to turn it back in for insurance? Before I just un-rooted and took it back in. Now there is no reverse for the knox. I could really care less for the knox and have no need for it.
Any suggestions for calming my fear?

I'm in the same boat as you man. This is the 1st device I haven't rooted in many years. The main reason that I'm not is I'm on the easy pay plan so in one years time I walk in to sprint, hand them this, pay the taxes which are next to nothing, and walk out with the note 5. So long as I don't mess with it. Which btw so far if you do root you will trip Knox and currently there is no way to reverse it. I'm kinda ok with it with this device though as I had the Note 2 before this running cm11 and while it was good something always went wrong somewhere. I'd take a pic and the phone would freeze or something and never ended up getting the pic/vid so it's kinda nice having a device as good as this and everything actually works.

To my knowledge tripping KNOX does not affect your upgrade eligibility. The policy simply says the phone must still be in good condition. That is all. They just want to be able to sell it a refurb and they can actually have it sent to Samsung and have KNOX reset. It can be done with JTAG equipment and knowing which bit needs to be flipped.

Yeah I'm not even sure how true that is. I think I'm gonna root tonight. If anything I'll at least be able to get rid of all the damn ads on this thing. That's one of the most annoying things about not being rooted. Lol.

Just make sure you know how to fix/solve issues should they arise.

What problems are you talking about? I've rooted a lot of phones over the years. Just wasn't sure about knox. Otherwise it was a go!

rooting itself causes no problems. -_- Problems arise when you start using titanium backup or removing apks manually, and you don't know EXACTLY what they do. Many resources out there will tell you, and sometimes a friendly question in a thread may solve your problems quickly. One good lol for you is : If you use xposed thats typically going to get blamed first for your issues xD

Im a sales rep at a sprint store and I can say with certainty that we do not check to see if a phone is rooted when we do a giveback on them. honestly the only thing we check is if it turns on and if the screen is broken. most of us wouldn't care regardless, ive even given advice on rooting to a few customers ive helped.

I learned about rooting long time ago from a service tech
Just be ready to pay the premium.

I see it this way - you have to by insurance anyways. I could buy a house with what I have given Asurion over the years. If my phone goes down it costs $200 to get another. If I have to trade it in the claim will be for broken hardware. They will get enough pieces to identify what it was.

The only problem I'm worried about is that I won't get my copy of 5.0 if I root before I get it. Is there a way around that?

Maybe. But they did say they cannot accept a rooted device. Whether or not they actually knew what they were talking about I don't really know. But there are ways to bring it back to stock though.

I think you are fine on a trade because the only reason you would need to trade is if it is not working. If it is for a repair it is going to be the hardware anyways. I've taken rotted phones in for repair and they didn't even know.

Is there a way to bring it back to stock right now. I've never owned a phone this close to it's release date. I haven't had a chance to look in to what's out there yet. I want to root with just ADB and not use a recovery but I can't get the USB through with out superuser and if I did get him in there I think he would be dead before I could tell him about the Knox.
question... Just to be sure...
I have been waiting to see the lollipop update before rooting my note 4.
But... if I were to root the phone (and add TWRP)... but did not install a new rom, would I still be able to get the OTA update from Sprint without issue? Will the OTA break root? Could the update brick my phone?
Alright Im also in the same boat as you guys. I been rooting phone since htc hero loll. Slow piece of **** lol. Anyway im scared of tripping knox and having a fear if anything happen to my phone like crack screen water damage etc. I have a best buy insurance and not sure if i do root it and best buy can still find out if my phone is rooted and my warranty is voided after that so waste of $12 a month. So what should I do?

com.tmobile.pr.adapt?

Since I have rooted my S6 this (com.tmobile.pr.adapt) has asked for root access? Anybody know what it is? I have denied it for now till know more.

The app does a security check. Technically being Rooted can breach security so they check for it and notify you about it. How does that make them "pricks" ? If you don't like it, then disable the app.

you can do anything you want with your phone, when you buy it outright..
they just dont want you doing anything you want with YOUR phone when you are on THEIR network..
not saying I agree with them, as I have also denied it access and frozen it in titanium, but I understand why they want to know what is accessing their network from our phones, I just dont like the sneaky way in which the carriers do this without informing customers up front..
and rooting has NEVER caused me any issues when needing service or warranty from Tmobile...

unfortunately, they dont know that..
EVERY public network in the world is subject to endless attacks, hacks, and attempts to bring it down, so the carriers, just like the banks, the feds, the military, and every other public institution feel its their right to know what people are doing on their networks, and i tend to agree with this.
If you dont like them watching what goes on on their network, then go back to the days of coffee cans and string to communicate with others, because every carrier and every network provider watches and monitiors everything possible on their networks; there is no getting around that in this day and age..
