Looking for opinions on Tronsmart ARA BJ19 mini PC. Anyone using this? - Android Stick & Console Intel based Computers

It's been quite a while on the market already, but cannot find reliable opinions/tests about it.
Anyone using it maybe?
It's bit like ARA x5, but this time we have Celeron J1900, which adds native SATA support - makes sense to use SDD drive with it now. Therefore, it seems very interesting. I am really surprised it's so not popular while being cheaper than Gigabyte cube. Heard some very bad opinions about Gigabyte, that's why I keep looking for alternative. Intle's NUCs stay very expensive comparing to these boxes I mentioned.

Have a read here, may help

Thanks mate!
It looks very interesting, specially while I know there is an extra mSATA connector working in it. Just need to rationalise it to myself now, over buying Braswell NUC .

Well it will do the Job and the Price is still ok...
Bit more Beef and room that those MINI Intel 2/32.
Enjoy

Meeting with HTC

Hi all
i'm an engineer doing R&D for Leaf Wireless in South Africa. We supply wireless solutions and HTC phones to Africa.
i'm going to Taiwan to meet and recieve training from the HTC engineers from monday the 12th. And since i've received so much help from XDA developers in the past i thought i'd offer.
if there are any customisation questions you have or HTC issues that are proving difficult to solve post them here. i'll ask the guys when i get there and try get some answers.
cheers,
Greg
hmm this thread sounds like it could take off.
i dont think you know what you got yourself into supaspud. i know lots of people are going to have questions and suggestions for htc.
i for one would like to see them implement a wheel mouse not unlike the one in the danger sidekick 3. that would make wm experience 100 times better.
also ask if crossbow will officially be released as an upgrade for the wizard.
when i think of more questions or suggestions ill reply again
?Why don't they make a full size (3.5" or whatever) screen in a cdma with more memory. Hell it doesn't even have to be vga. I use mine as a pda, if I wanted a tiny screen, I'd just get a damn phone.

Save yourself the bother. It would be up to the telco's to decide on releasing an official update and they would then pay HTC to build the rom. Expect that to happen about the same time as the telco's decide to donate all their profits to third world charities.
It's not a telco thing. If you are refering to the companies who re-brand the HTC machines (most of whom are not telcos) the decision will be based mostly on whether HTC will actually supply the ROM and at what cost if any. They would have a fairly good idea about what they are going to do for some machines as they own one such company that retails their machines (Dopod). Find out about possibility of Artemis crossbow ROM if you can
Linux
It would be interesting to get their opinion on Linux on the HTC platform, and whether they would consider contributing to the development of a well rounded Linux based phone environment.
Yes, their opinion on linux would be good to know
Ask if they have any future plans to support it officially.
Ask them what (apart from soldering the chips on and editing the rom file for memory alocation) needs to be done to make 128mb of ram work on UNIVERSAL (it origionally had it, so the motherboard supports it and it can work
Hello Leaf Wireless
Well, well Greg, I thought that Leaf would not come out of the closet.
I have been the source of information till now, but now please take the stage.
A few months back I introduced a few of your staff to the XDA site.
I am now and then fed tit bits of information which I share on the forum. The ROM 1.35 update is a good example.
There are some clever guys here and we can all all learn together.
The problems I raised with Renier was:
1. Storage card getting lost in Media Player
2. Windows 5 is full of unresloved problems, with the BT stack poor.
3. Battery life on 3G is shocking. I have upgraded to 1.27 to see if things improve.
4. I have an Email from Dan Mackie @HTC Eupope stating that an Major ROM upgrade would be released at the end of January 2007, "to resolve all known issues on the TyTN". Nothing has happened yet!
The issue with the storage card was a known issue and I was informed at the end of September that it would be sorted with the next upgrade.
It hasn't happened yet but I have noticed that the TyTN's that you have received do not have this problem.
Please feel free to contact me should you wish.
Enjoy the trip and let me have a copy of the new ROM before you leave.
Regards
A wish list would be for the keyboard have some kind of a lock to prevent it opening when retrieving from the pouch. I find that I often drop call on closing the keyboard.
The magnets in the pouch are also troublesome and cause screen rotation and also dropped calls at times when rotating back.
GPS in the Hermes
What component of software (hardware??) is missing in the Tytn compared to the Trinity to make the GPS work.
Thanks
Francisco
PS. My first post, and I would like to thanks all the excellent XDA-developers community for this great forum.
@SupaSpud: Tell them to produce a Hermes with VGA screen and GPS and 256Mb ROM, RAM....
Thanks.

Several people have already asked this question:
- How can we install 128Mb RAM on Universal?
HTC never replied.
sheesh...
wow... looks like I opened up pandora's box. i'm making a list of all the queries and i'll ask them on monday. keep em coming...
ps: i'll find out bout the rom now.
Hey SSpud - gr8 offer !
1. I''d like you to ask why they dont set the default Bluetooth (a2dp) to Stereo (and the bit rate / max bit rate to 40+) ... and generally fix stereo BT.
2. How do they acvtually work with customers (eg BT in the UK) .... I get the inpression they are extremely slow and unresponsive.
2. Camera - if even cheap sony ericons can have autofocus and macro settings why cant HTC ?
3. Stereo Jacks (3.5 or 2.5mm)
4. Direct access to microSD card
5. When will they update their FAQ's and trouble shooting guides beyond the patronising " check that it is turned on type " answers.
Thanks for this oportunity !!
(I'm especially intersted efor Artemis/ XDA orbit)
Hello 'Spud,
Apart from sorting/mentioning the listed problems here - especially the poor bluetooth stack IMO - please do bump the question regarding their future GPS roadmap for TyTN/Hermes series of phones.
Now that will make a true convergence of technologies.
Kind regards,
Mine is a small and trivial request... could they please please please fix the battery meter on the hermes... the [email protected] +/- 10% drives me nuts... wish we could get the +/- 1% like the other devices.

Tell the guys at HTC to watch the XDA-Developers site to find out what's wrong with their phones and what features are needed to turn them into great devices - remember the IPhone is comming!
Basil
Tell them not to save cents in devices that cost hundred of dollars. For instance they use cheap and weak cpus like samsung (which has only ARMv4T) ot OMAP with it's low clock frequencies. Or they save memory and instead of using 128MB or more RAM! RAM is cheap! I'd like to see smaller touchscreen displays with VGA resolution! Look at the size and resolution of some nokias: E60 or E70. I'd like to see hermes (device with foldable keyboard) with gps, 624MHz intel cpu, 128MB RAM and 2.2 inch touchscreen in the near future!
YES! Tell them about this forum! Tell them not to do stupid things in locking their devices - this simply reduces their markets!
And tell them that maybe it is about time to see their x86 UMPC! Look at the sony vaio UX180P or UX280P!

I would personally wait for Nokia WP7, Thats when you'll see some good hardware / camera etc...
I bought mine two weeks ago. It is not perfect, i'll not lie. But it is the OS that I like most (I have iPhone 4 and Droid too). Android is laggy, even with overclock, and it feels.. like a beta. Worse, Alfa version. Everything is smooth and pretty in WP7.
I was willing to wait for Nokia devices, but i read that Nokia will only release one phone this year. And seriously, I don't trust Nokia. I don't want to buy Nokia's test phone, and I don't want to wait until next year.
Just buy it already, and join us

For 3 iterations, I've always said android feels incomplete. Even on the tablet side, android feels very incomplete and I guess this has made OEMs feel like they can do what they will to cover android's shortcomings - specifically in their management of OS, fragmentation, and acceleration.
The iphone felt finished to me - even if I didn't like the iphone platform at all. Everything just worked and ran quite effectively. It was cohesive and central when it was released.
What I enjoy about windows phone is that it carries the cohesion of apple, and totally ramps it up full blast making it an incredible platform to code on, experience, and use on a daily basis.
I do miss flashing custom roms for one reason - I HAVE A DELL VENUE PRO and so far its one of the most closed wp7 devices on the market! Period! But even then, the only thing I want is root access to the registry. Not so much optimize much because the os is damn good as is.
Are there limits to windows phone 7? Sure all platforms have limits. But I think in time windows phone will definitely be a household name. All it really needs is good advertising at this point.
My biggest issue with WP7 right now is not the missing featurs, but rather the lack of quality hardware. That having been said, the Samsung Focus is very nice. It takes amazing pictures. The screen is big and beautiful. It is sleek, and has long battery life. My only complaint is how slick the plastic is. Would have been nice to have a more rubbery texture to it or something.
Like every OS WP7 has its cons and pro's but to me it's just the experience as a whole that stands out to the rest. I'd certainly recommend a WP7 device to everyone who wants to buy a smartphone. Certainly the one's who owned an Android device before like myself.
I'm happy with my Trophy. I love the hardware. Have a nice grip, and an awesome screen. Not too large, nor too small. It's just the perfect size to me.
The plastic doesn't feel cheap, and doesnt look cheap. I recommend. And it is worth a look.
Thanks for feedback ... I use the following apps remote desktop, facebook,Twitter, slingplayer, navigation and need a good quality camera .... I'm looking at the apps market to see if I can find any apps like this..... I was disappointed to see no flash for browser....

LG Quantum == great hardware
I love my LG Quantum.
I need a keyboard for business emails. I sometimes write mails on it longer than I do at my desktop computer. Try that on the on-screen keyboard.
But, if I just have a few words, the on-screen is fine. And the word-correct is amazing on WP7.
Friends at work have Samsung Focus and love it. Most people DON'T need over 8GB of flash, because with ZunePass, one can stream what one doesn't have, and then just download what they want to keep.
WP7 really is GREAT STUFF, and getting better with time.
Enjoy Windows Phone 7!

this is a really silly question, ppl who like android will tell you no and ppl who like wp7 will ask you to move....
this is really very personal... its like you asking ppl what car should i buy
you should buy if you like wp7 not because ppl think u should buy...
best thing you can do is go play with different devices in the store and see which one you like better.
WP7= fast and smooth, works out of the box great.
Android= very versatile, but does have some lag and might require some tweaking to get the best out of the device.
Just depends on what you are looking for.

+1 on this. I read an article in another post and it has me holding off a WP7 purchase for now. 5-reinstal limit on paid apps! Hell no! It aint worth it if that's how it's gonna be. At least being a smartphone it will have all the common features on phones these days, but the 5-limit will kill it for me.

No offense dude but until I see oficial word from microsoft that it aint true, I'm gonna hold back.
Well for me - yes and no.
If you don't care so much about features than WP7 is in many ways great.
But for me after 3 months of extensive usage - I start to have enough of stupid limitations. In March we will get only c&p and no other functionality enhancements.
I like how this WP7 behaves but it's totally unfinished product.
I rather accept a little choppiness but have all the features than use super fluent skeleton.
BTW this WP7 super fluent behaviour is a little myth. I see little freezes all the time.
More I think of it I see myself getting Android device soon. I don't care if it is "choppy", what is kinda BS TBH. I saw many current strong Androids which are smooth.
And they have oh so much more to offer right now. Sad but true.
I can't even buy apps and nobody knows WHEN this will be possible. And so on.
It will take a year or more to bring WP7 to desired state and I think some of the very useful features will not be supported ever.
Sorry for the rant but after the joy of using something nice has worn off, I just more and more miss features which are cruical for me and it's more than one thing.
I imagine getting SE Arc....
But I still didn't "give up". WP7 is still a great foundation.

If you've been using Android especially with Sense I don't see how you could ever switch to WP7. I have an HTC Incredible and I bought an HTC Surround to play around with a week ago. The Surround has already been sold. After using Android for years WP7 seems like a joke right now. It is almost closer to a feature phone than a smartphone. I was going to keep it just to use as a Zune and for the Xbox Live features. My original Zune 30GB is 5 times the music player a WP7 phone is. The Xbox live stuff...I'm playing a game, let me switch to something else for a second...Go back to the game, wait loading? Oh yeah, no multitasking.
Maybe if you were coming from a feature phone WP7 might seem nice, but it is far behind Blackberry, Android, and iOS. Even my Samsung Blackjack with WM 6.1 was far more usable. It sucks because I am a Microsoft fanboy. I love my Xbox, my Zune, Windows 7, etc. But WP7 is pretty bad I thought.

Request the GameKlip for the Captivate Glide

Ok my dear fellow users, here´s the thing, since the guys from Game Gripper aren't interest in adapting their product to our devices, I figured out it's time for a different approach, this, is the GameKlip:
This is what I've send to the guy who made this little piece of magic:
Hi, my name is Santiago Console, I’m a Captivate Glide user and an active participant of the XDA Forum dedicated to the development for this phone. A few month’s back, we gathered a bunch of request, from people who were trying to make this guys:
http://www.game-gripper.com/
Adapt their product to our phone, for some reason, they didn’t bother, even after we gather more people than the D3 Community, and that guys ended up getting it. That aside, will you be interested in adapting the GameKlip to our phone ? I can assure you, that, at least, you will sell 30 units, right after you set up the pre-order J
To know the dimensions and the shape of our phone, you can look into this page:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i927_captivate_glide-4071.php
Thanks, and I hope you can make this happen
END OF THE E-MAIL
He answered that if get's enough requests, he will make a GameKlip for the Glide and, come on, there's a lot of pros about this thing:
1) If you already have a PS3 Controller, you don't have to spend a lot of cash to play like a real Gamer on your device.
2) You can take advantage of the Glide's OTG functionality.
3) It's only a "Clip", so it's not like it's going to broke, get lost, or anything XD
So, the idea it's the same as with the GameGripper request before, so, please, If you have some time, and want to have this "Clip" available for the Glide, take a few minutes, and write an E-Mail to the creator, and tell hin that, If he makes it, you will buy it. His E-Mail is [email protected]
You can learn more about the GameKlip here:
http://thegameklip.com/
Thanks for letting me know about this, filled out a request.

I was thinking about this, maybe I can even make Rogers send it to my courrier on the US, it's there any custom taxes for sending something from Canada to US ? Because if it is, then, I would just make my courrier pick it up directly from Rogers, it would be a little more expensive, but, safest as well.
And, about the thread, keep going, Game Gripper for the Glide it's possible, we just have to make sure that people over GG know that there's a lot of customers willing to pay for this device.

Maybe it's time to face the reality, we are not going to get the Game Gripper for the Glide, also, with MOGA around the corner, I would discourage anyone who's considering to buy the iControlPad, because, no mather how expensive the MOGA could be, It can't be very far from the iControlPad's price, also, it has better materials, and support from the big fishes like EA and Gameloft.

No Blackberry Playbook forum? What Android games work?

I'm a bit disappointed that there's no PlayBook subforum here to discuss this, but here goes: After preparing a coworker's Kindle Fire with Android Market as a gift for his mother, I got to play around with it a bit and came out impressed with what a $200 tablet can do, particularly with games (Shine Runner, Shadowgun, etc). My understanding is that the Blackberry PlayBook can be found for the same price with similar specifications but with Bluetooth, SD card, and a camera. Of course, it can't run Android proper and I wonder to what extent it can run Android games. The fact that I'm only seeing 2D games on YouTube tells me that it probably just doesn't have the libraries for full real-time 3D accelerated gaming, but I'm looking for something a bit more definitive. Too bad I don't know anyone with one. If anyone here has any experience with a rooted/Dingleberry'd Blackberry PlayBook with Android Market, I'd love to hear what happens when attempting to run intensive 3D Android games. It will really help me make a future purchase decision.
Now, I am aware that Blackberry devices aren't likely to ever run Android proper but, without a PlayBook forum, it's hard to tell if it's even being considered or looked at.

of course there isn't. blackberry hardware is harder to port android to than iCrap. even at its current price point, its still not worth the developers' time. its been said about just about every blackberry device there is, and just because the playbook has beefier specs doesn't mean its going to be any more worthwhile for the devs - and the devs are what makes XDA go round.
Thanks, everyone.

"Porting" isn't the only concern. You can jailbreak with Dingleberry, install the Google Android Market, develop for it, or even learn the ins and outs of using it all which are worthy of a discussion forum.
Not only that, but I suspect that RIM would unlock the bootloader and allow Android before they cut all losses and go bankrupt over this thing. If they could sell one with the promise of dual-booting Android for $130-$150, why have a firesale at $100? They can learn from HP's mis-steps. Hell, dual-booting Android could even be a Trojan-horse to gain QNX market acceptance.

tablets, is it just me?

I see no need for a tablet, I really have no interest in buying one at all. Not even if Google launches a $200 one. Its either I'm on my phone or I'm on my laptop. Tablets fill that space in between but there really nothing more than a bigger phone screen and a crappier laptop in my opinion.
Also is androind ever going to support Java?
Stop starting pointless threads. First of all lots of ppl have tablets and 2nd of all parts of android are coded in Java seeing as how you need a Java development kit to dev for android I don't quite understand your questions and I'm not quite sure you know what you are talking about

Exactly, and they're convenient for travel, when you only need the internet and don't need the cumbersome laptop. Also, if you're a student, you can use them to take notes.
I used to think tablets were kind of redundant when the iPad was announced. I always figured if I ever needed some form of portable computing, aside from my phone, I would just buy a netbook of some kind.
However, I've opened up to the idea. More and more I see how it can be really useful while in class or at work. Even more so while traveling; I personally don't like taking out a laptop out of my pack while in a crammed chair and having to wait for a lengthy boot.
Once Win 8 is released and more products like Asus's Pad Phone and Transformer Prime, as well as better cpu and battery tech, tablets will be a lot more practical. Of course, ultra portable laptops will still be ideal, heck why not have both. Tablets are just a lot more inexpensive and offer a lot more practicality.

This is exactly why the transformer was invented by Asus. The ability to have a tablet when you want it and a laptop when you don't. Also Asus now has a Windows 7 slate that can be modded to dual boot Honeycomb.

Is that Win 7 tablet like their Transformer series? I would love to have something like the Transformer but I must have windows and seeing as how Microsoft plans to lock down their devices to prevent other OSes to boot, I'm kind of in a bad spot. I'm sure though that once they are released the devs will figure out a way to bypass the locks in place.

Not quite. Here is a link to what I was talking about.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230140
Think of a tablet, but with Windows 7, dual core proc, 4 GB of RAM, and a 64 GB SSD. It also has a bluetooth kb for easier use when not as mobile. My wife wants one really bad.

Wow, that looks pretty amazing. I'm definitely adding this to my wish list. I had contemplated Win 7 tablets before but now that I know Honey Comb has been successfully installed, I'm considering them even more. Thanks!
Btw I stumbled upon your ICS rom a few days ago. I wanted to comment but I haven't gotten to a post count of 10 yet. It looks really great though, I'm gonna flash it to my stay at home Evo and test it out. I love your attitude and the way you handled everything and everyone's criticism. Well played! I'm glad we have people like you on this forum, and the world in general.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up!
(Wow, these captchas are getting more and more complex lol)
Java may be involved in the making but when I go on the web Java doesn't work. I guess I should have been more specific, so that I wasn't blatenly treated like an android hater. My point with tablets is they just can't do everything. They're only half as capable as a laptop. For me im doing quick web searches and apps on my phone and the heavy stuff on my laptop. Another person complained about start up times. My laptop runs vista Buisness and boots up just as fast if not faster then my evo 4g. Its tweaked to perform better and faster but then again I image most people at xda tweak their devices.
Lastly this is q&a and both my questions where just that, questions. they are not pointless to me and I have a right to ask them. In asking them j had hoped to gain some reasoning on why a tablet purchase could be neccessary. And as far as Java goes I was hopping to learn if Google has plans to get Java working in the web browser or if there is already somethining out there that works.
