What signal causes the hu to switch to the backup camera - MTCB Android Head Units Q&A

VW Jetta with a 4.4.4 Joying quad HU
My backup camera functions as it should. However, I want to install a toggle switch that will allow me to turn the camera at will, but I can't figure out what turns the video on.
I have the backup camera connected to the parking lights ( I have daylight running lights) so the camera is constantly on. I checked the orange backup wire and could not find any signals on it.
Is there a way to cheat the system if I'm using a CANBus decoder?
And What are the 6" red wires on yellow RCA cable for?
Thanks,

@tmiller101 ..Here's what I did for Manual Control of the Backup Camera. You can turn on the backup camera anytime you like, even while the unit is booting up. I also use it to view traffic to the sides rearward while on multi-lane roads. It only has power when you activate the switch. Bought cheap switches off Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HG7F37A/ref=pe_1098610_137716200_cm_rv_eml_rv0_dp
Well, it won't let me load my schematic....only list URL image to choose.
__I__ (push on/push off switch)
Cam (+)----------------o o------------------(+12V) that supplies +12V to the Head Unit)
Cam (+) ^^^^(same Connection)----------------------<>( "Back") Orange wire of Head Unit
Cam (-)---to Chassis or can go to the same wire that supplies Batt (-) Black wire to the Head Unit
In words, what you are doing is supplying the Camera (+) 12 volts that's always connected to the
Head Unit but only when you toggle the switch. The (-) or chassis is always connected to the Head Unit and also to the Camera. So, the answer to your question is the Orange "Back" wire! Hope you can follow my attempt at drawing with just a keyboard-. I had already installed a rear camera, so I had already run the power wire for the camera to the front dash. If done like mine, you will need to also run the power wire all the way from the rear to the Head Unit so that it only gets power when manually turned on. I mounted my switch below the Head Unit in the dash.

that --I-- symbol should be over the two o o symbols to show a switch

The other day I was measuring the voltage level on the orange wire and when I put the car in reverse nothing changed. As you say, I too thought I should see 12v there. But I saw nothing, that got me thinking and thus the reason for this question.
So, for the sake of clarification, You're saying, if I splice into the Orange wire coming out of the HU and apply 12v, the radio will think I'm in reverse and switch over to camera mode?

@tmiller101, you are looking at it backwards-....The Orange wire "Back" is an INPUT to the headunit, not an output! It gets an input voltage from the cars brake circuit to make the headunit apply the camera's video to the headunits LCD. So, anytime that you want to power up the camera and see it's video, just apply +12Volts to the Orange "Brake" wire. No matter what's currently on the LCD, the camera's video will then be displayed. Wire it the way I did and the camera will only get power when you activate the video with the switch.

Thanks, Yes I figured it to be an input. I just wanted to make sure the signal was 12v and not a ground. I read elsewhere that a ground is applied to activate the hu. But obviously you have verified that not to be the case.
Thanks again,

'CAMERA PWR' Cable on xtrons head unit TD696A

Hi,
After asking on the Xtrons forum and not getting very good replies from their support staff, i thought i'd ask here.
I have a wire labelled 'CAMERA PWR' coming from one of the connectors on the head unit.
I assumed this would be a constant 12v supply for a camera, but does not appear to have any voltage on it. (checked with multimeter)
Does anyone know if it should have voltage, or is it switched in software, or does it have another function?!
See attached for images of the wiring and head unit connections
Thanks

I don't know for camera pwr, but the back wire should have +12 to activate rear camera input. It might be that the camera pwr is activated
by the same back wire supplying +12 to an external camera. Connect +12 to the back wire and measure camera pwr with your multimeter.
Your screen should go blank if no camera is connected.

Cheers, yep that's a possibility.
Next time I pull the head unit I'll try that.

Weird rear camera issue

Hi,
I have an Android 5.1 .1 unit with RK3188 chip 1G RAM. All works well but there is a weird rear camera issue. When I start the car and switch to backup gear, the rear camera always works normally, however, after driving 10 minutes or longer the camera does not work anymore and the screen shows an exclamation mark when gear switched to backup. This happens approximately 80% times, while the other 20% times the camera would work OK even after long driving time.
The camera is wired normally with power connected to backup light. Backup light power is also connect to the head unit as trigger for rear camera video.
I was initially thinking this could be a bad camera issue, but the problem persists after installation of a new camera. So it must be the unit.
Has anyone else experienced similar problem? Any help to fix the issue is much appreciated.

modern car? possibly smart power management and therefore not sending enough power to the camera as it detects the reverse light not needing that much power. my vw golf does it and my friends bmw 1 series did, if its wired to a switch 12v does it do the same?

Thank you, fma965. That makes sense.
The car is 2013 Prius. I did not realize cars are getting much smarter since last few years. 12v can come down a lot to save energy. I'll try to rewire the power connection.

you may need to use a relay to detect when reverse light is on then trigger camera via 12v connection (elsewhere) otherwise the camera will be always on

Relay came yesterday and I installed it. Pull cigarette lighter as 12v power source, wired to the relay switch, and connected rear light cable to relay as trigger.
To my surprise, the problem of video still persists! I can get rear camera video when starting the car, but loss video ~10 minutes after driving when shifting gear to reverse.
I made sure the relay wired correctly (If connected wrong, I would be either stuck in permanent rear camera video or no video after shifting to rear gear). I changed video cable as well to be sure no cable issue. Also noticed that when the problem appears, I have to wait for the head unit to shutdown completely (not to sleep mode) in order to get video back from rear camera.
Not sure if this is MCU bug. The problem started since I had the unit and MCU got updated once. I'll update one more time to see if anything changes.

It's MTCD_KD_V2.41_1, and is already the latest version. I'll try to flash other manufacturer's MCU since most of them are compatible.
Prior to flashing, I should start by erasing current MCU settings and set to defaults. Do you know the best way to do so?
Edit:
MCU flashed to HA-2.52, but problem not changed. Seems to be a hardware issue, or compatibility issue with Prius.
I tried to wire rear camera to front video input. Image did show up, but I had to press a button each time when switching to back gear. I may have to live with the issue.
Strangely enough I have a 2010 Prius and yes I have a similar issue. Mine works almost always, but if I switch to reverse, then back to any gear, then back to reverse, more then 5-6 time during a minute, then I have the same as you. I'm pretty sure we have the same cause. If I reboot the unit everything is ok. Our situation is definitely different to the german cars as they have a detection circuit for failed bulb and that is the reason for their issues. Ours don't have that, at least ZVW30 Prius. I doubt it's the power or the camera. That is the unit itself and as you say probably poor hardware design.
Agree with you.
Additional note:
I had some issues after cross flashing MCU. Lost RDS in radio and iGo became very slow. Now I flash original KD MCU back and everything got back to normal. Cross flash MCU may not be always a good idea.
Hi you solved?
Mine do the same..its another car...more strange that mine works fine before i change battery...after that start with problems...
It switch but take 5 mins at least...
I rewire.put relay.put direct 12 and nothins..sometimes it works at second..bit after nothings....
Any help?
Thanks
Hello,
I had the same issue and check voltage. For an insane reason, the wire provided with the radar kit was totaly failing.. measured voltage was around 5 volts whereas camera required 12v ( i though to the USB volatge first, but, no!). This red&black wire, i don't known how, went to a huge resistance... may be pinch. I change for good power wire and throw away the bad one. My rear camera get back...

Dasaita rear camera not immediatly working

The Dasaita V600 does not switch on the rear view camera until the multimedia is turned on. the front parking camera displays immediately. the rear parking camera motor does not work until the dasaita v600 main screen is turned on What could be the reason? this is very bad. the car is running, the rear camera does not display images for 35 to 40 seconds until multimedia is turned on. the front parking camera gives the image immediately without waiting. There is no such problem for the multimedia of other brands. I thought of it as a software

Faced this issue on my Dasaita HA2021-V600 but in my case a little work on canbus wires solved the problem.
Looking at connection diagram on top of your head unit you need to search a wire named "Reverse", in my case the wire the nr. 2 in orange color.
This wire in directly connected to canbus box; cut that wire and connect it from head unit side to +12V from reverse lamp.
After that you will see immediatly camera images when you put your car in reverse gear.
Now my turn for a question: what type of front camera are you using and how you have connected it to head unit and which harness you have used?
Hope my suggestion can help you
P.S.: Make that at your risk, im not responsible for whatever damage on your unit with my "mod".

Hello. To attach the front camera to the car, first go to the factory settings. Activate the camera in the last section there. how many secs you want to see. then buy and install any front rear camera.
Place the cable in the D. aux in glass on the device. now the front camera will help you when you leave the back cabin during each parking.
Thanks for your reply, but i dont understand what you said in:

when I switch to reverse I can only see a black screen with the green guides and a sort of yellow alert.
Can you tell me the color of the +12V reverse lamp wire? did you find it behind the unit or you cought that +12v from the reverse bulb behind the car?
thank you

If you are facing that issue you simply need connect the yellow RCA cable from you rear camera to the right RCA connector in your head unit, you dont need perform any modification on HU wires; that RCA wire is usually labeled CAM-IN or Rear-IN. Check you connection
Also if you connection are OK the camera is not supplied with +12V and you need use the wire that come from the reverse lamp

Not a probl with canbus. The only problem that canbus can do is "not switching on reverse gear". When you see the yellow "!" mark on screen mean that unit is not receiving video signal from camera.
Try this for checking the camera: connect the yellow RCA cable from reverse camera to AUX-Video IN harness and use AVIN app if you see images the camera is OK if not you need to check camera connections.
Cable 2 from canbus trigger only the "rear view" if the unit is not switch to reverse input.
What are the canbus setting on you factory setting menu? you car is an E46? what type of main connector are you using 17 or 40 pins?

I tried that and tried every combination that I could think of with the Various RCA cables - just the yellows, all the rca connections, the different yellows. I think it may in an issue with whatever wire from the car that triggers the camera when it is put in to reverse.... I read somewhere that the harness provided from Dasaita may have an empty pin hole where that wire should be. I am not savvy enough to know. Thanks for taking time to try and assist. Any other tips to try? could this be a voltage issue?

Hi there everybody,
I recently noticed my PX6 unit doesn't see any of the front / rear cameras. With all wires connected the f-cam app shows the orange triangle (no signal) for both front and back cameras. The same happens if I give a 12v signal to the reverse (pink) wire.
I never got to install the backup camera in my car but I did bench tests with a power source and had the cameras working when I first got the unit. Now, a few months later, the cameras simply don't work
I tested with 2 different cameras and also with a DVD player and none worked.
I even opened the unit and checked the motherboard to see if there is a fried circuit or IC...and saw nothing. The video inputs lead to a IC labeled "FMS6502" and the signal gets to it through a 75ohm resistor and a capacitor which both look okay.
What can it be?
Please give me your opinions on this as it drives me crazy !
Thank you!
I would guess your headunit is not providing the 12 volts to both cameras
Hi , I remember your Fcam app requires you to connect your front view camera to your f cam video input and provides thru another lead a 12 volt output in which you can conect the power for both your front and rear camera. If both cameras dont work most possible the radio is not providing the 12 volt output .

What. You've just said, connect the front and rear camera and the +12v feed. The headunit doesn't provide a 12v output for the cameras.
Not surprised at the guess, these topics generally are guessing games.
I'd suggest finding a skilled car audio tech or auto electrician. That's not meant to be an oxymoron, seriously

rear cam behavior.

Hello All,
I have issue with my rear cam.
It is connected via wireless transmitter to the radio.
Here what's strange... When engine is off, ignition on, cam is sending video.
When I switch reverse during engine operation, I can't get any video.
I am sure I have mess up with the connection but do not understand where
Can someone help me?
Thanks a lot.
Update... Not for my good.!
All wires connections are good. Theonly differences betwwen cam working/not working is when the engine is on.
So my guess is a weeak power. But i do notknow if it come from the front or tbe back of car.
In front the receiver is connecter to +/-12v of the unit near the canbus.
In the back the transmitter is connected to +/- of the back light and the cam is connected to the transmitter.
So there is two device that need 12v to run connectec to the back light.
Do you thing my truck provide same volt when engine is on or off to the back?
I don't know exactly how to explain this, but i had the same problem.
The issue is the power coming from the light bulb. My guess is that your car has a canbus system, that gives you irregular voltage on the transmitter wire.
I had my camera powered directly from the reverse bulb wires, and it turned off when i started the car.
The solution was to power the camera from another +12v, that wasn't on the canbus line (eveything else except the bulbs). Hope this helps!
Exactly!! I found out that, on my car and many nowadays, rear bulb get power from a source that power also other electrical parts of the vehicule. It is call "multiplexing".
When the engine is off 12v go directly to the rear buld. When engine is on there fluctuations of this power
Advise is or to find another stable 12v source or use direct rca cable with 12v power from the unit.
I will try the rca solution as even less easy than wireless transmitter, video will be better quality.
Thanks to yoir reply
I have the same problem but i am too lazy to search around for another source. As such, i ended up buying the only isolated dc-dc 12v coverter i could find with a decent power rating.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/183722250804
I dont know if it will work yet as i am waiting for the shipment but afaik it should smooth out the signals/noise for a clear picture transmission from the camera.
You need to find another 12v source or use a capacitor on the line from the bulb to gather voltage and give away a straight 12v to the camera .
The other line seems more fine to me.
I got my straight 12v line from the fuse box directly to the camera through a relay so that the camera won't stay on all the time my car is running.
The relay is activated by the reverse lights. When reverse lights on -> current flows through the relay to the camera. Its pretty simple

Sygav reverse camera issues

Hello
Today I installed my back up camera to my PX5 6.0 Android unit with the Rockford fosgate system. The Android unit says it's MTCE_HA_V2.85_1 and I wired the wires to my reverse light power and ground and plugged in the RCA cables but I didn't do anything with the wires attached to the RCAs. When I put my car in reverse the reverse mechanism triggers but instead of the video from the camera it's just a black screen and the parking lines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Check the power supply of the back up camera and the yellow RCA connector. Connect the RCA connector that labeled CAM VIN but not AUX VIN.
