T-mobile capping off data tether speeds after limit is reached. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hey gang just noticed after I was tethering my note 3 that I hit my data limit apparently.....I use wifi tether router from the app store and apparently the creator does not have a work around for it at this time. Any ideas?
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk

I found a work around, I was actually flashing DarkLord N5 port and the wifi tether router app would not work on the device. So after a lot of searching and several days of playing on the device. I found a post that was perfect. It works for me ont eh DarkLord N5 port ROM, I don't know if it will work on any other ROM but PM me and I will share the info with you.

Best tethering app

What app Oscar anyone using on their rooted Samsung s iii?
Prior to switching it was baked into my CM9 os. So I am not sure what app to download. I have tried one bit it is constantly stopping

WiFi Tether from the market works best for me!
I am seeing a lot of negative comments about this app 'wifi tether' and gs III stock. It seems to indicate that it does not play well together. This is why I was asking, because this was my experience today: No consistent connection, it simply drops the tether and the app stops.
Sent from my AT100 using Tapatalk 2
Better get used to it if ur stayin stock. All that works unless u have the means to Bluetooth tether. If u can do it with Bluetooth try foxfi. Normal tether doesn't work with it yet. Also if u haven't done so, in addition to setting gnex profile in the tether app and unchecking the disable wake lock option, delete ConnectionManager.apk from /system/app. Probably the cause of your tethering woes
Thanks for confirming

Www.foxfi.com will let wifi sctivate with root or no root. Does work for gs3. I use it frequently with sprint.

But it doesn't work. It says it active but you get a error on the device when you try to use it

Yeah FoxFi wouldn't work fir me either. My laptop saw the ssid but would never connect. I tried another tablet but had the same results. Wifi tether used to work for me but doesn't for some reason after the latest update.

WiFi Tether works for me just fine (gotta select the GNexus CDMA/LTE profile).
The only hiccup I've found is that before I activate tethering, I often need to do a fresh reboot on the GSIII, or else it will claim its broadcasting, but it really isn't.
And, of course, root IS required for this particular app.

I don't know enough about the rules on posting links so................
I did a google search for "wifi tether versions"
Down toward the bottom of the results I came across a page from the androidpolice site.
Right above the row of three screen shots is the following sentence: (If it does get pulled, however, you can always grab the apk from Here).
Click on the word "Here" and it will take you to the android-wifi-tether project home page.
Click on downloads and that will get you to where you want to be.
I am running Jelly Bean on my GS3 and have yet to be able to get wifi tether or foxfi to work at all.
I am about to start at the oldest version of wifi tether and work my way forward until I find something that works.
Until I find something stable, I will be using pdanet for wired tether. Hey, it works all day long for me.
On EDIT.............
Ignore most of the above and just google "android wifi tether project"
It will cut out most of the steps and is the first result on google.
Dang, I've been here almost two years and still considered a new member?
Had to wait 5 minutes before I could edit the post with better info.
Trust me, I'm a real person........not a spam bot!
Sure it has something to do with post count.
Any luck with older versions of wifi tether?

Not yet.
Work got real busy right after I made the post and I wasn't able to go through the apk's.
I have to go over to another house and do a few hours worth of work before I can really get in and mess with these.
It may be late this evening (for me) but I am still going to try and run through them.
Sorry about the delay.
I wasn't able to do anything with this until this morning.
I was unable to get any of the versions to work with JB.
Three different computers........three different os's, n one would see it.
Could possibly be that I am simply missing something.

That is incorrect. On the newest wifi tether app in the market, you set it as Samsung galaxy s3 and it works great. On 3.1 beta 14, you have to select galaxy nexus cdma

Alright guys finally got this working on my Note 2.....
If you need the wifi tether then follow this...
First what you need to do is Flash XquiziT N2 Rom v3 and make sure you select wanam 15 toggle instead of stock toggle during installation . you might wanna know why this Rom, Because it has Wanam's 15 Statusbar Toggle that has HotSpot toggle.
Second the Replace the APN setting Follow this LINK
and once you replace the APN setting Reboot and use the hotspot toggle under notification and ENJOY. FYI i have the unlimited data plan.
I tried the APN changer with rooted stock Rom and it didn't work only XquiziT Rom w15 toggle and APN changer worked for me...
Finally i would like to Thank nightfox11 for posting it here and WarlockW for making the APN Changer
Once I deleted the apns, and restored the xml file in the OP, I was able to activate tethering using this widget: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achmyr.android.froyo

I followed the directions in the OP, then used a widget to activate wifi tethering. the tethering provision app does not need to be frozen, however, if you try to turn on tethering via the settings menu, it will undo the hack. You will have to delete your apns, and restore again.
If you freeze the tethering provision app, the settings menu will force close when trying to activate tethering. This will prevent it from undoing the hack.
Native USB tethering does not work; but proxying through ADB works (it has always worked).
that's all there is to it.

This is confirmed working!! I have STOCK JB rom, rooted with this Fix applied. I tried using Wifi Tether and Barnacle but those did not work! Using the widget linked in the quote (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achmyr.android.froyo) I got wifi tethering working no problem!! Super Sweet!!!
Work flawless . I guest TMO will get mad now :silly:
Working here also. Used 15 toggles in [UVLJ1][28 Oct] XquiziT N2 Rom v3 to turn on the Hotspot. Did not have to mess with APN's, etc.
Oh wow I replaced the APNs last night and was using some random widgets from the market to turn the Hotspot on. I would be able to connect to the Hotspot but the pages wouldn't load up. Just kept timing out. I was already about to flash the Xquizit rom but then decided to just try the widget being talked about in this thread, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achmyr.android.froyo. And holy crap it solved my problems. Tethering is up and running. Tmobile can suck on that!

Yup, just rooted using mskip's note II tool and then APN replacement trick. And as everyone says, do NOT try turning tethering on through the settings. Use a 3rd party tethering widget (link in the previous post). Let us know if it works out for ya!

It sounds like your regular Hotspot password. After you turn tethering on with a widget, go into the tethering app, select 'configure' and you can either change the network key/password to whatever you'd like or make it an open network

T-Mobile can still tell you're tethering via user agent . It's only a matter of time before you get the text or have to use a user agent switcher. If you use the VPN your data is encrypted and tmobile can't snoop through your data .

So what if you set up a VPN through an NAS or router on your home network, and used the vpn software built into the phone. The S3 comes with two built in vpn clients, the native android vpn client, and the Authentec one in the app drawer pre installed by samsung. (does anyone have any opinion on differentiation between the two by the way)
I would test this myself right now, but havent set up the VPN capabilities of my home NAS, and wont be home for several days. But am really curious about this now.
I have in the past used a VPN through my old work work to netflix and hbogo and use my Play Music acount abroad, so I have high hopes for this idea.
Someone please test. I'm dying to know. I'll play and post when I get back.

Tether mod not working

Is it just me or do the Wifi Tether mod not work on the GS4? I've tried the Dirty Flash mod and the Treve Mod and neither are working. My Hotspot Counter just keeps getting higher. All I remember from the other phones I've had before were to look for hidden APNs and delete them. But I'm kindnof baffled here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sidenote: Just bought the GS4 after reading about Wifi Tether working. My dumb luck, it doesn't work for me. Using the original stock rom with the auto root and twrp.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Nevermind. I figured it out. Edited my xml files and deleted the tether APN altogether. It seemed to pop up 2 tether apns. I tried changing the apn address and that didn't work. So I deleted them and now I'm sailing.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
So I went ahead and tried the hotspot all morning. Between the way to work and now, I used 300mb of from my Unlimited Data bank and 2.5mb of my Hotspot Data bank. So it seems to be taking a little bit of data from the Hotspot bank everytime I start the tether and the rest of the data is taken from the Unlimited Data bank. Has anyone else notice anything similar?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
So I just got done chatting with T-Mobile about the Hotspot usage. Asked them why my Hotspot Data bank of 500mb keeps getting used when I'm not using it. They told me that any data used by my phone itself with the Hotspot turned on will consume data from my Hotspot Data bank. It would explain why I see a jump of 4 or 5mb when using the hacked Hotspot.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
So to help myself out... My conclusion to this issue is that Wifi Tethering works fine. There seems ro be some weird issues with it, but I managaed. I'll write it all down later today.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
So after a couple of days, I have come to the conclusion that Wifi Tethering works, but it can still use up data from your Mobile Hotspot bank. What seems to be happening on my case is... When I have the Hotspot turned on with Sync turned off, no data is used from my Hotspot Bank. Any data usage from my phone itself will cause it to deplete from my Hotspot bank. So in other words, it is kind of useless to me at the moment.
What I am trying at the moment is Wicked rom v5. So far so good. The issue I am having is the known Brightness Bar disappearing at random. But other than that, I installed Wifi Tether and it works fine. Still seems to have the same issue. It'll take a few more days until I can be sure.
But for now. Those that have been asking, I am tethering with Wicked Rom v5 by using the Wifi Tether apk.

what kind of speeds are you seeing with HSS?
Another xda member stated he had slow speeds as well in the s3 forum . I've never had speeds problems with this method . I will test as soon as I get out of work .

I just tested and I'm getting between 3-10mb down. Must have been HSS network .

I've been using Cyber Ghost as my free VPN and it's very decent. I've been considering paying for Private Internet Access, at $40 for a year with good reviews.
PIA is pretty awesome. very fast, both ping and down/up speeds. the vpn only adds approximately 30ms.
for free vpn on the phone, hideninja vpn works very well. pro version has more locations (like uk for bbc iPlayer). and it's supposedly lifetime vpn.
using jellybeer on an i317 with a $70 unlimited tmobile prepaid sim.

this is with PIA. the up was a little slow on this test. it's usually 10-20mbps. ping and down speed are normal. some servers are better at certain times. very easy to switch with viscosity for mac. i start the normal tether (settings>more>tethering&portablehotspot>portablehotspot) with no vpn on my phone (with a cm10.1 based rom), and then start the vpn on the computer. i didn't even know about the upsell message until i flashed a touchwiz rom.
So, picked up a kindle fire hd 7, and figured i'd give this a shot finally.
Running rooted stock, setup and execution was a breeze following the op tutorial.
I tried to get tethering added to my plan, but they said i'd lose my current awesome unlimited plan to get tethering added...so xda to the rescue.
Thanks!
Sprung for PIA. Here's a representative speed test with and wzithohut.d
I've been using the TrevE mod without the VPN. I only tether my Nexus 7 and it works without a problem.

Tethering to another Android device is fine . You are only effected when using a desktop user-agent .

This is my post from the s3 forum . Still working .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35820296
Found a solution to tmobiles user agent sniffer .
**Must be rooted for this to work * *
Steps:
1. Get TrevE Mod tether app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34037922
(you will not get a internet connection using any other tether app while using the VPN app)
2. Get Hotspot Shield VPN
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...id.vpn&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
(was mentioned in earlier post but couldn't get it to work)
3. Start Hotspot Shield VPN and connect
4. Start TrevE Mod Tether app
Problems?
Hotspot Shield does not connect or you get error 1028?
Get Tun.Ko from market and install it
Repeat step 3 and 4
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hZWQudHVuLmluc3RhbGxlciJd
Connected device does not receive internet?
In TrevE Mod tether app go to settings and select Device profile and select Generic ICS/JB wanl0 . Now select setup and select Netd-Ndc master . Check box that says send Nets Max client . Check box WiFi-Reloads driver 2 . Check Routing fix .You may need to change ssid too .

Why do you get errors in YouTube using user-agent switching? I use user-agent spoofing with Chrome and can use YouTube, NetFlix and HuluPlus with no problems and no speed issues that often arise when using a VPN service. I can even play online action games while connected to LTE with 30-40ms pings. All this without any VPN use.
Here is my thread concerning tethering and user-agent use:

I used chrome with user agent switcher and every time I went to youtube I would get "can not play video at this time" also problems with any https website . That why I made this tutorial . Plus Tmobile can see you tether when you use a user agent other than an Android user agent . They also send the annoying text when they see you thether . Vpn prevents all that plus I don't appreciate TMO eyeing my internet traffic . If any one has problems with speeds using a vpn I would suggest setting up and ssh server . If you or any xda member would like me to make a tutorial an tethering via ssh server I can do that for you .

Strange, none of those issues ever occur using my methods described in my thread. I don't get texts from tmo so I don't think they monitor activity in the manor you mentioned or I would have been notified long before I hit the 200 gig mark. I've used somewhere around 250 over the last few months. No notifications, no throttling, no problem. I am interested in the ssh server, however. That tutorial would be great. Thanks for your input as it helps us both further our understanding of tmo's network.

Works great. Only issue I seem to have is with xbox live. I can connect and my nat setting show as moderate. This was normal when using the stock tethering app. However in Blops2 I am unable to connet to a game, it will put me into a searching lobby, it will just keep trying to find a game.. anyone else seen this?
Worst case I can just use the native app for xbox and this for computer tethering.

Before I had home intent I used to play battlefield on xbox live with this method and a had no problem finding a game . But my Nat also showed moderate . Unfortunately there is no way to change this because this is controlled by tmobile .

Right I know but the moderate settings. I didn't have a problem before this message, but it looks like they may have had an issue with the servers last night because I got a message. I'll try again in a little bit.
