TMO Update - T-Mobile LG G3

Just got my D851 with stock 5.0.1 preinstalled.
Its telling me to update the phone.
Has anyone updated via the air method?
Not sure what it is but wanted to be sure if its MM or 5.1.1 before I moved forward

As a rule of thumb if you plan to root, you should NEVER update. Updating will usually patch any exploits the devs use to root our phones. It depends on what you want to do with your phone down the line.... Update at your own risk.

@tiguy99, also it's definitely not MM. I'm not even sure 5.1.1 was ever released either.
I know the D851 has been unlocked from the get-go (didn't need bumping like the others in the past) but as the previous post alluded to, the OTA just might lock it down. Be sure and be careful.

Sorry, my post was not helpful. Here is something you can do: long press on the update notification and click on the "info" icon and disable the notification. This way you are less likely to accidentally update, and it won't bother you as much.

If it is a stock D851 running on Tmo, then the update is probably the recent update of 20e (released back on June 9) to 20g (released back in October). There has been a lot of that just within the last 60 days. However, it is still Android 5.0.1. Tmo has NOT upgraded our G3 to anything beyond 5.0.1 yet, but has committed to updating us to Marshmallow Android 6, probably sometime in the next 3 months.
As for the update, all 20g did was patch the Stagefright vulnerability that had been discovered back in August. That was a vulnerability in Lollipop wordwide on all carriers. Look at your phone info under settings. If you are on 20e, it will not hurt at all to upgrade. But in any case, the update you are seeing is DEFINITELY NOT 5.1.1 and it is DEFINITELY NOT Marshmallow. It is still 5.0.1. Good luck.
Please hit the THANKS button if I helped you.

I got mine week ago and updated it didn't root but used Newest Root Method in general section and finally got it.

That being said, I made the mistake of updating. Now I'm having a very hard time trying to root my D851 20g. Can I restore to Kitkat for the purpose of rooting?

Dude this is the wrong forum for a question like this. Should be in Q&A or General. You'll get better answers there.

No need. Google 'Newest root method' D851 xda download file thru your browser double click on windows batch file. Follow prompts. Hope this helps you out.

I too got my D851 last week. It had KK 4.2.2 and wanted to update. So I decided to go ahead and do the OTA. The final result was 5.0.1 D85120g. I don't think there are any higher updates yet. Rooted without issue using Newest Root Method mentioned above, again, without issue.

However, if you are still unsure, you can always downgrade to a lower version. You will have to do a search for D85110r in the KDZ file version and find the loader for that file. Took me a little time to find it but I have both the KDZ file and loader.

I tried that 1 click method and it failed. I have the &D851 20g Lollipop 5.0.1. Any idea why it's failing other than error on my behalf?

I believe it's because you've downloaded 20G. Probably got patched. Did the method I mentioned work out for you?

[Q] How should I get Lollipop if latest official release is 4.4.4?

My girlfriend has the M8 as her backup phone. She took it out of the drawer today to update it before starting to use it, and she found that it would only get 4.4.4 rather than Lollipop like she was expecting.
Is it true that the official 5.1 update won't be here until August or so?
Is it advisable for her to install a custom Lollipop ROM to tide her over until the official update? She wants to keep the Sense UI around.
If so, what ROM(s) are best/most popular/easiest to install?

1: yes
2: 5.0.1, or 5..0.2 are both Lollipop. 5.1.0 is an update to it.
3: I suggest ViperOneM8. I flashed it right after I bout my M8, and never looked back. When I had my last phone (Galaxy S3), I was flashing a new one every week or two.
Now........... What carrier are you on? Chances are that there is a lollipop update for your girlfriends phone.
And is she S-Off? Because that would make everything super simple. Either way, you can update her firmware (you'll need to do that to run the latest ROMs) with S-On or S-Off.
Give some more information so someone can point you in the proper direction.

You need to OTA update to 4.4.4 before you can update to 5.0. OTAs need to be installed in sequence, and you can't skip one.

Yes, but there is a 5.0 update already available for the huge majority of variants (if not all).

She's on AT&T, and from what little I know of S-Off, she is not that.

She did update to 4.4.4, and it wasn't offering any further OTA updates... until just now when I checked again. So she's probably able to get 5.0.2 now. Wonder why it couldn't tell her that the other day.

You can only check for updates once a day. Apparently, this is true even if there is more than one update in the queue.

Thanks for the info. But one thing to note, its easy to forget the fact that AT&T is a unique animal. For AT&T branded devices, updates don't roll out from HTC directly, they must go through AT&T's network and by no other means.
What you say may or may not be true for AT&T; they have their own (annoying) way of doing things. I did state "apparently" you can only download one update a day in the OP's case; just based on the fact that they stated they updated, then no other updates came up that day, but did a couple days later. You may well be correct, and maybe there was something else preventing the subsequent update from downloading that day.

LG G3 VS98535B (5.1.1) safe for update if rooted?

I have a lg g3 (verizon) with 5.0.1 rooted. Is it safe to update to 5.1.1? Has anyone tried? I want to but im afraid it'll break my root completely or my phone will brick. I can't lose my root because ill lose a lot of features. So if someone has tried or is willing to try that'd be awesome!
Same boat. I'll be watching this for an answer.

Reflash stock recovery and you should be fine
OTA usually removes root. You can reroot it after you install the OTA
No update for the d855 or other versions ?!

Well I recommend a clean TOT or KDZ flash. Hope this will fix your problem. Please do follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2785089 to flash TOT or KDZ then update via OTA. Thanks!
DO NOT TAKE THE UPDATE
...if you want root, etc. Currently there is no way to root 35b and no way to roll back to an earlier version. They patched some things up it seems.
Some brave souls took the update and are stuck now... http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-5-1-1-ota-t3220693/post63200915#post63200915
Freeze with tibu (or delete) the system update apk to stop the notification.

I just update my rooted 5.0.1 VS985 to 5.1.1, gotta say , this new system is more battery save. i turn on the music and LG health and mobile data when i took exercise tonight for about 2 hours, and it's only cost 3% of the battery.and you know, lots of useless Verizon apps and others, but it's fine, i can disable it in app manager.
Yea I noticed that with this new update as well.
I'm little sour about being in un-rooted state.
But the battery life is noticeably better.
Maybe this option was there but I noticed new options under the developer setting where you can restrict amount of background apps running. I believe this helps out a lot as well.
Just an update on the update...
On vs985 it looks like someone was able to successfully TOT back from the 35B update, so people shouldn't be stuck anymore if they took the OTA(see post 84 here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ing-takethe-vs98535b-5-1-1-ota-t3220693/page9). Root is still not available for people who took the 35B OTA yet, but there are 2 stock based rooted 35B ROMs available now: Jasmine and Skydragon. I think the only thing that isn't functional is advanced calling because we can only use the 24b modem with the 35b ROM due to the 12b bootloaders we have that allow us to have TWRP...or something like that. So it'll be a 35b ROM and all it's updated glory - running a 24b modem.

Just need a bit of help getting going

So Ive searched around and I just can't find a definitive answer so here is what I got.
I understand that this here; is how you use marshmallow with the new bootloader unlock and root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
I also know that I have to do this exploit first to unlock the bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/note-4-verizon-bootloader-unlock-t3358913
My issue is I ended up getting forced OTA 2 weeks ago. So my current question is, Do I have to roll back to lollipop? Is root/unlock even possible for me? If so, How do I do that since I haven't rolled back before. Its been a while since I've been into rooting/roms. Is there a link to doing it for marshmallow to lollipop? Also what about the firmware?
Current Stats:
Model: SM-N910V
Baseband: N910VVRU2CPD1
Android Version: 6.0.1
Build: MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPD1
Kernel Version: 3.10.40
I just need an answer since Ive been reading threads the last 2 hours. Its confusing since the titles of most are how to unlock bootloader THEN goto marshmallow. Thanks Guys!
I think I solved it myself. Looking like I'm effed with this bootloader. Since I don't think its rootable or unlockable.

You can try to roll back to 5.1.1 by flashing the full firmware (thanks, hsbadr!) using ODIN. You can unlock the bootloader on this version.
The question is, will your phone let you. In another thread, the success rate appears to be something less than 100%. I don't know what the harm would be... if you can't do it, ODIN will likely fail. At any rate, the attempt is on you. I can't be responsible for what happens.

Just frustrated right now trying to get Wifi to work. It looks like its suggested to try Flashing MM Stock, Reroot and Re-unlock bootloader here:

Then use TWRP after all that.

Just make sure you're paying attention to what you're flashing. There are only three roms in the verizon development section that are able to utilize the 6.01 bootloader and modem. JASMINE ROM, PAULPIZZ 6.01 Beta and Cm13. The other roms are ports based on 5.1.1 so you may need to stay on the previous setup until more roms are updated
Tip the OP usually states what works/does not work and updates when things are fixed . The information changes quickly so sometimes you may need to read the thread from the end back to the beginning to see if your issues have been addressed
It was actually super simple once I found the thread on how to go back to 5.1.1 then how to take that and go unlocked w/ marshmallow chain. Last thing to figure out is disabling OTA on Jasmin ROM

Welcome!
The "security update" broke my wifi calling. I've tried rebooting, turning it off and on, turning wifi off and on... no luck... and of course i applied this update while visiting my family where cell reception is awful.
Does anyone know the LG download link to the 26A KDZ? I flashed the 25A kdz and it shows as Modified even after a Recovery Menu reset...connectivity and battery drain major issues also...
Did you find a link?
Hi, Bro, did you find a link for the download yet!? I am looking for the kdz files as well!!!

I used LGUP first to downgrade from 26a to 13b kdz which is the original system ROM. I used the "Refurbish" method which completely erases everything before flashing the KDZ.
Once 13b KDZ was flashed I used the LG Root to flash the rootedsystem .img.
I can't post any links here yet but if you do a quick search on this forum you will find detailed instructions on how to proceed and all the necessary files you want to download. It's really not that difficult, just make sure you read and understand what you're gonna do so as to minimize any chance for mistakes.
Happy flashing!

This thread will tell you how to downgrade from MM to LP. It works. I had the same problem you did.
Yep, That worked for me. You need to "return to stock" like post above and downgrade the firmware. Use the 13b firmware stock, so you can just flash over it with the 13b rooted file. Easiest way i found. And That is the program that MUST be used. The other way WILL fail every time.
We just need a UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER so we can custom recovery like TWRP and start flashing ROMS!
