My old Note 2, want to turn it into a media device for my car - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I have a spare Note 2 that I would like to turn into a dedicated media player for my car. Meaning, I don't care about any other apps really, just Spotify and my media player on the device itself.
Technically there really isn't probably much of a reason to root the device that I know of. Admittedly, I don't know anything about rooting a device, so I don't know all the benefits.
Having said that, there is one problem I'm hoping rooting will allow me to bypass. When I turn my note 2 volume all the way up, the connect to my car, when a song begins to play, the volume will sound loud for about 1 second, then all of a sudden drops several DBs. This seems to happen on both of my Note phones, Note 2 and Note 4. I'm hoping that rooting my phone will allow me to bypass what ever is happening on the phone.
I started to go through the process of rooting, one of the first things the instructions say to do is to backup the phone. I followed this h t t p : / / beginnerguides.net/android/how-to-backup-every-mobile-device
However, after starting the process, the backup software said it was unable to connect to my phone. Which I'm not sure why, Windows 10 sees the phone just fine in Explorer.
If I don't care about anything that's on my phone, is there any real need to perform the backup??? Can I just skip this step and move onto rooting?

Did you try to just use another media player? like Shuffle+ for example.
For car use, I recommend AutoMate Car Dashboard app, is really cool :silly:

Try another music app like Shuttle+.
If this doesn't fix your issue, root and install agni kernel with boeffla sound control.
With boeffla you can bypass the android audio compressor and reach whatever volume you want.
ps: the volume drop you listen, is just a protection, the track is just loud.

Not sure shuttle will be what I want. I use Spotify, so 90% of all the music I play is through their player.
I will look into agni and boeffla.
Will these work on my Samsung SGH-I317?

Ok suppose a better question is, If I install the AGNI kernel, will I still be able to run Spotify?

I supposed you connecting your devices via Bluetooth. It is possible your phones to recognize faulty your connection with car as Bluetooth headset and lowering the volume for protection for your ears. There is a setting "Limited Headphone Volume". You can disable this at some roms at settings or at media player settings.

I was reminded last night why I even bothered upgrading from my Note 2 to the Note 4… The headphone jack is messed up on it. So, at this point, it does not even matter at this point unless I get that fixed.
As I was digging around last night, I read here at XDA that the AT&T Note 4 is unrootable.

I cannot control the volume of Streaming Bluetooth Audio.... :(

I have a pair of bluetooth headphones and a bluetooth receiver in my car.
Once i pair either one to my Touch Pro 2, i noticed that raising/lowering the volume on my HD2 does not affect the audio what so ever(unless i put it on mute).
The music sounds very loud and distorted, and i cant control the volume either way...Anyone else run into this issue? How can i solve it?
That's normal. You need to adjust the volume at the receiving end.
I have the exact same problem. Not sure why as when I pair up to my speakers, the phone tells me it cannot control the volume, yet it worked fine on my "Touch Pro" (the 1st one) and my Kaiser. Not looked for a solution, because its not much of an issue for me really.

But the problem is that, the audio being streamed from the HD2 is so loud and distorted, that i have to turn it down(but i cant).
So even if i turn it down on the receiving end, the distortion is still there.
With my old samsung omnia, i was able to turn the music up or down from the phone...I dont understand why this isnt possible with the Touch Pro 2.
The music coming from my phone is unlistenable. The distortion ruins the audio. Which really sucks, because i spent $300 on a car reciever with bluetooth!
There has to be a solution! Come on XDA!
Try turning it down on the phone first? Or get a player that uses it's own volume control instead of the system volume (I believe Mort Player and Nitrogen will do this).

Same problem here!!!
No volume control at all on TP2, and volume of music cant be changed through the system volume control either
I have a bluetooth connection to my motorcycle intercom system. I had the same problem, sort of.
I installed Conduits Pocket Player, and use the equalizer to bring down the level of the Bluetooth. That worked well enough for what I needed to do.
I read somewhere else on the forum here that this issue is attributed to the Widcomm Buetooth stack on our phones. Whenever I connect my headset to my phone or my laptop, I receive a warning that the volume must be adjusted on the output device, and cannot be adjusted on the phone/computer. It may be related to the poor support for AVRCP.

ok, so it seems that this wincomm bluetooth stack or whatever SUCKS. You're right....I guess the only work around i guess is a player that doesnt use the system volume, like coreplayer.
Coreplayer is great for movies, but for playing mp3's i would prefer Slide 2 Play.
Havent tried nitrogen yet though.
Does a mp3 player exist that is similar to slide 2 play, but doesnt use the system volume of the phone?
I too am not able to use many of the bluetooth audio accessories such as my jabra headphones, desktop speakers and my indash audio system. None of which work as they did with my Kaiser. This was supposed to be an upgrade to my Tilt and it doesnt even support the OLD protocals that were common 2 years ago?? Im seriously considering switching to blackberry. Anyone intrested in a nearly new Tilt 2. Goodbye htc (high tech crap)
THis is a problem with the bluetooth stack, just email HTC so they can get a patch for this. or microsoft because they are the ones that control what stack it gets.
this Goes for the HD2 and others too

Why does no one care about speaker notifications while headphones plugged in?loud

I first came across this problem on my GS3 and hardly anyone cared. Luckily CM10 did away with most of these problems. Now that I have a GN2 I can't use AOSP due to the stylus. How do you guys get around the loud notification sounds from the speaker while you are working in a quiet environment? Having to mute your notifications doesn't seem like a valid option because you might not know you got one then. On every phone I've used in the past, regardless of OS, there was an intelligent audio router that put everything through the headphones. Obviously you are listening to the headphones, so why pump it out the speaker? I'm sure people at the library love hearing blaring whistle sound effects, haha.
Secondly, an issue that CM10 also fixed on my GS3 was handling Bluetooth calls while headphones were plugged in. Once again, every other phone I've owned has been smart enough to allow the Bluetooth to override the headphone connection. This is particularly annoying in my two cars... I have to plug in the audio cable to the aux port, but I also connect to the hands-free systems. When a call comes in, I have to unplug the cable while driving to get the sound through the speakers. Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen, and a clear sign that someone at Samsung just wasn't thinking about common priorities. These are not A2DP systems, hence the requirement for aux. Though I prefer the audio quality over aux over BT any day, so that should always be an option regardless.
Frustrated, since I don't have a workaround like I did on my GS3. Bah.

As far as notifications being on the speaker with headphones. That doesn't happen on my Note
Ringer volume and notifications volume are two different slides, In CM10 they can be merge, on by default i think.
turn down the notification volume from the volumes setting, or expand the volumes (gear button) when you hit either volume button and turn down the notifications volume.
In the bluetooth settings you can configure each device to hand just media, just voice, or both. Again gear button in that menu.
Also "Why does no one care about...blah blah blah" in a topic subject is uninformative and a little insulting, do better next time

That doesn't explain anything... yes, notifications go through Bluetooth if you use A2DP, but the moment you hook up the actual headphone port, with the basic hands-free profile, like a car, the notification sounds do not come out the aux cable. They either come out of the speaker, or the BT device. Honestly, suggesting to turn down or disable the notification volume is a copout. I think most people are unaware of these issues, and then there are many like you, who strangely just don't care, or sidestep the issue. These are both fairly serious issues, honestly. One could even be life-threatening if you get in an accident while playing with the aux cable.

You sir, need to prioritize your life before you hurt someone. (You brought it up)
Also, turning down the volume WILL solve the problem of the volume being to loud.
Of course I wouldn't allow myself to get in an accident due to that, but what is the point of a Bluetooth hands free system when Samsung requires you to fiddle with a cable rightwhen the phone rings?

Looks like you got 3 options.
1. Wait for CM (Support it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2019062)
2. Turn down the volume while you use headphones (Use tasker to automate)
3. Throw your phone in the river and use your HTC again
Also don't text and drive
Shouldn't use your phone at all when driving, since talking actually diverts more of your attention than texting... however that isn't the topic of discussion. I'm more curious why people don't care, myself. It doesn't bother you at all that every time you plug in your headphones in a quiet place, you have to manually turn off your sounds and might miss something important? What about a loud environment? I would never feel my phone buzz in my pocket when I'm running around the data center.
Seems like a mix apathy and not knowing it's an actual bug.

Nothing is very important. Automated with tasker once, never had to worry about it again. People dont care because its not an issue for most and the rest just turn it down.
I myself found it to be very strange. I'm used to HTC phones, they always do notifications through head phones. It would be nice to implement.

This has been an issue with Android for quite a long time:

I would have hoped that Google or Samsung would have addressed this by now but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I'd swear CM10 does it properly, so I didn't thinking was all Android, just TW-based stuff, which we can't use since we have the stylus.
Agreed, this issue did not occur with my galaxy nexus. I hate it on my SIII, whenever I study in quiet places I have to turn the sound down. SOmetimes I forgot, and people look at me like they want to punch my ribs out when I get an email.
Why is this not addressed?
I am using SoundAbout but it causes major issues while listening to audio over the headphone jack. When I'm connected in my car, my music skips randomly. I am using a galaxy note 2.
There is an option under accessibilities that allows you to make your camera flash, well flash, when you get a notification. Not a solution, but another option. Of course if you forget to turn the sounds off and your flash is strobing also, the library I'd going to turn into a discotech... lol.
Well at the library your phone should be on silent or vibrate, if you crashed while messing with your phone in the car and then tried to sue samsung/google you'd be laughed right out of court. How is it anyone's fault but your own that YOU were stupid enough to crash your car because you couldn't leave your phone alone while driving, which is the law in most states(no phone while driving) you can also set a profile to lower the ringer/noti volume when headphones are plugged in. No one cares because its not an issue for anyone who sets up their profiles properly.
I like to break stuff!

[Q] KitKat bluetooth volume

OK so I used the search on here and googled this to no avail... I'm currently on slimkat 4.4 for the flo but I've also experienced this on 4.4 on my d2vzw... When I use my Bluetooth headphones to listen to music or watch a movie the volume is either extremely loud or too low... There seems to be no comfortable middle ground... I was wondering if there was a way to edit the build prop or a 3rd party apk I could use to fix this... I've tried to mess with DSP manager but I can't seem to aquire the volume level I desire... Maybe this will get ironed out with time... Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated...
I was having this same problem that I posted a few posts down from yours. The volume on the lowest setting was extremely loud. I put paranoid Android back on and now it's back to normal. I haven't found anything that fixes this yet so will stick with 4.3 til they fix it since I use my headphones often.

It is Kit Kat issue on all devices that use the default Google Bluedroid Bluetooth stack, meaning Nexus devices and Google Play versions (other devices running a modified stack may not be affected).
Supposedly, it is an extension to Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 that enables Bluetooth audio devices to directly control Android's system volume. It seems some genius thought two independent volume levels (headphone volume and handset bluetooth level) was too confusing for folks. Clearly they did not think about (or test) that some Bluetooth audio devices with their own volume controls might default to a very high or low level, and control of only the handset's bluetooth level would not provide sufficient range of adjustment.
So once again we have Goofle googing up bluetooth in Android. Please share your disappointment in the following threads so that we might see a fix ASAP. Guessing they are facing law suits for hearing damage if it is not addressed quickly.

Workaround for playing music is, Play Music > Options (3 dots thing on the top right) > Settings > Equalizer > On, then put everything to the bottom. Still kinda loud, but at least it won't bust my ears.
My issue was with movies not play music. I flashed a different rom and it works fine now anyways hehe

Bluetooth Headphones Issue

I have an issue with a new pair of bluetooth headphones i have just purchased. Specifically media playback sound quality. It is utterly woeful, with distortion, hiss, and cackles/pops continually over any media player or videos. Sound quality on calls is fine. I know that the headphones work, as i have used them on other devices and they function fine. My S9 is currently up to date.
I initially though that it was something to do with volume limiter as the weird thing is occasionally when they immediately connect and i play some music they work fine, then the quality drops as soon as the limiter notice pops up. I have checked though and the limiter is actually turned off. Turning it back on doesn't solve the issue either. I've gone so far as to wipe the whole cache partition and nuke all the caches, but that hasn't helped either.
Is there a known issue that I am unaware of ? Hopefully with a resolution, or other obvious steps i could try that people could recommend, as I am out of ideas now.

i flip back and forth between a few different BT headsets and never have this issue and have also used the same headsets on several devices in my bag-o-tricks. The phone does use a DAC for music where its pretty raw for the phone convo, which could explain why calls are ok, but music isnt. Is this your only pair of BT headphones? Do you know anyone who will help you test them on another phone?

I have experimented a bit more, and think that this is a codec issue. If I enable the developer menu, and switch to another codec (not the SDC if defaults to) them restart the headset they work fine. Problem is that it always defaults back to SDC whenever the headphones are disconnected for a period of time. I can't see how to force the use of another codec, both AAC and LDAC for example work absolutely fine with the headset. Though this is quite a long process just to get the headphones to work each and every time i want to use them.

gotcha. i also understand youre probably at work like many of us poor schmucks such as myself, which would make it kinda hard to test things out right this moment. But do any of your coworkers have a BT speaker you can connect to to try to replicate the issue there as well? Im mainly trying to eliminate variables at this point. You might try flashing the most current Odin files with the "HOME_CSC" as to not erase your user data. Itll over-write the code for the OS and so forth and nuke any software issues that might be causing this
I've now tested another set of bluetooth headphones and they work absolutely fine, they default into the aptX codec. Is that determined by what the device primarily works with ?

yes, the codec is changed by the DAC within the phone to be the best suited to whatever device its connecting to. What kind of headphones are you using that get the garbage sound? I have a pair of Tozo T10's, which are the off-brand individual ear buds from amazon for $50 and they sound very good. I also have a pair of maxsonic bluetooth buds which cost $17 that are connected to each other by a wire and they sound equally as good.

Bluetooth volume on external speakers too low

I have the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and the Bluetooth volume is so low when connected to my external speakers (soundbar & Amazon Echo) that it's useless. I've Googled the problem and tried every suggestion (Disable Absolute Volume in Developer Options, calibrating volume on external device to phone, etc.) but nothing has worked. One suggestion was to turn off the equalizer on the phone, but I only have the option to change the default sound effect, not disable it). For comparative purposes, I have successfully set up Castbox so that I can select a specific podcast on my phone and play it on my Echo without Bluetooth as it's directly connected to my Alexa account. Choose the exact same podcast on my phone or through Pandora and play it on my Echo via Bluetooth, and it's at least half the volume, if not less. Turning up the volume on both devices is a non-starter as it increases background noise and is annoying, not to mention that it's not even the same quality. Does anyone have a working solution? Thanks.

Thanks, but it turns out that it's not any particular app. I tried Jet Audio but just like ever other app, Bluetooth audio just plain sucks. Even my desktop and tablet had disgracefully terrible audio on my Echo. I've come to the conclusion that Bluetooth just isn't capable of decent audio transmission.
Once again, are you rooted?!
