poor BT reange - Sony Smartwatch 3

Hello experts,
My SW3 has a really poor bluetooth range; if I have the phone, or the headset, ad more then 75 cm of distance they do not receive the BT signal from the watch.
Is this normal?
Is there a way to increase a bit the range?

This is not normal. My watch maintain connection even if I leave my phone in other room with a concrete wall in between.

It sounds like hardware issue.

Well, I just tried a full reset and - it seems - now BT is working fine.
I'll do a couple of tests and will let you know.

I think I found the guilty.
May the sweat interfer with normal BT range?
I use to put the SW3 in the back pocket of my running pants and... after few minutes I begin to have the transmission problems.
A possible solution could be to "Domopack" the SW3 before starting to run.

Just as a disclaimer, every phone will lose signal if you grip it a certain way. Remember the iphone debacle?
But the quick fix is to just put a case on it. Your body will no longer interfere with the antenna and your phone will have the added bonus of surviving a fall.

Downside is cases tarnish the natural beauty of the phone that the cell phone manufacturers intended. I just take the risk. I would rather have a nice looking phone IMHO.

gripping ANY phone tightly/awkwardly over the antenna will cause loss of signal. Some are worse than others, but it happens to any modern phone with an internal antenna. Cases help, but you're still going to be able to replicate it if you try hard enough. The phones are designed so that the antenna will more than likely not be blocked if you're holding it in any normal conventional way during regular use.
One usual culprit for the G2/DZ is the WiFi signal getting weaker when using the hardware keyboard, because your hands are covering the top and bottom of the device.

Like I just said, there's nothing you can do other than just don't hold the phone in such a ridiculous way. You can't move the antenna inside the phone, it is where it is.
In normal use I highly doubt you'll ever see drastic signal drop because of the way you hold your phone. Nobody normally holds a phone in the way shown in the video.

like I said, using the phone normally (yes even playing games in landscape) your signal shouldn't drop so low that you will be completely disconnected from the network. Don't get scared just because the bars drop.
But i already play at Order and Chaos and this game are also in landscape mode and unhappily i get lost connection every few minutes ;/ and the game has reconnecting.

There's nothing I can tell you. The antenna is where it is. If for some reason you're in a low signal area to start and you cover the antenna you're going to see loss of signal.
Tell me if i give back this mobile on warranty then they are able to solve issue ?

You're not listening. Every phone has this issue if you hold it in the right place. Its a cell phone with an antenna. Its just going to happen, there's nothing you or the manufacturer can do to "fix" it after the phone has been made.
I acutally thought this was a radio problem. I switched radios and noticed a slight improvement.

A radio update can help your signal a bit overall, but it will never remove the effect of strategically covering the physical antenna. What it would help with is a default low signal, that gets worsened to the point of disconnection from the network by covering the antenna (aka your normal signal could be higher, so that when it gets lessened it still stays connected).

[Q] Solutions for OUYA's weak wifi?

Got mine yesterday. Biggest complaint is the wireless receiver is pretty weak. I had the OUYA upstairs where my phone, laptop, and ATV2 all got a strong wifi connection. However, the OUYA kept dropping the connection every few minutes. I had to move it downstairs, in the same room as the router.
Has anyone found any solutions for increasing the OUYA's wifi range?
noticed the same thing about weak wifi signal...wonder if it's a hardware design issue or a driver issue.
Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. I actually have to AP's - a netgear router in my outside office where my cable comes in and then a WRT-54g setup as a repeater to serve my house. My TV, Living room PC, Wii, tablet, and phones all get a great signal off the WRT and the Ouya even reports it as a good signal - but refuses to connect sometimes and drops the connection all the time. Oddly enough the Ouya has an easier time connecting to my netgear router even though it shows a "fair" signal at best. So I'm thinking maybe the Ouya is just kind of picky about what it likes to connect to. But I also usually see at least 6 AP's in my living room and the Ouya only picks up my 2 - so it does seem to have weak reception.
Thinking I'm going to reconfigure my network this weekend. I've been working from my official office more lately and don't use my outside office much at all anymore so I'm probably going to reverse things and put the router in the living room so the devices in there can be hardwired and the office will run off of WiFi now instead. Been thinking about doing it for awhile the Ouya is just the final straw.
One thing I've considered doing is using the Ouya out of it's case to see if that improves it's reception any, it's really easy to remove from the case (4 hex screws on top then the board just pulls out with a gentle tug - but be careful not to get the grounding clip caught on the lip the lid fits into) and with the case being aluminum it could potentially be attenuating the signal. Since they released design files for the case if running it out of the case helps it wouldn't be that hard to get a plastic case made for it...but I'd hate to have to go that route just on principal.
For whatever reason I did have better luck getting the Wifi to connect when I went into Mange->Settings->Advanced->Wifi and used the unskinned android settings menu to setup my wifi. using the Ouya's menus I was never able to get it to connect to my WRT repeater. But using the stock settings I was. Not sure why that should matter but there it is.
I think it is a driver issue. Install speed test and seer what results you get. I get higher upload speeds than download speeds and using Ethernet it ifs no where near where it should be. Not enough off an improvement to make connecting it worthwhile.

Someone else posted somewhere, that they turned off ethernet once they had wifi connected, then hard reset the Ouya, and it sped up the wifi connection. I can confirm this for myself as I tested a file transfer through ES File Explorer and it jumped from 3 kbps to 45 kbps. Still a lot slower than my other wifi devices in the same room, but at least it became usable.

Try just rebooting (hold power for a second and select power off). It's never a good idea to just pull the plug.

Yep this.
Didn't really have enough difference for me. Range and speed are still flaky if I'm more than 20 feet from the router.
I'm still waiting for OUYA to recognize this as a problem, and hopefully put a stronger wifi chip in for retail. OUYA support has told me that weak wifi on the OUYA is not a widespread issue, so seems like they just want to deny the problem.
They either need to:
Increase the power to the wifi chip
Use a better wifi chip
Use a wifi chip that can utilize a wire antenna for better range
Build in drivers for some external wifi adapters
Sucks that I'll have to get an wifi repeater, wifi bridge, or something else to get the OUYA working in a room where my laptop, ATV2, phone, and tablets all work fine.
Mine dropped out completely when I tried to login for the first time after updating, had to turn the Wi-Fi on/off a few times to get it to work... and it's sitting 20cm from the router!

Yes, mine is extremely flaky still as well. So far I'm pretty frustrated with the problems that are arising with Ouya, which is too bad, because I actually really really like it should far. I honestly wish I'd waited until retail now, because I would have had a better/more finished product for less money and hassle.

Is anyone still experiencing Wifi problems? I just got mine hooked up today and had a ton of problems until I updated the software and reset, have not had a single connection issue since.

No. Mine worked out of box. I have an Ouya1-b
I have experienced zero issues, but I have an enterprise class dedicated wireless access point (a Ubiquiti Networks Unifi AP if you're curious), so I get full bars everywhere in my apartment and coverage like 20 feet out into the parking lot outside my apartment.
Since I also have a gigbit network everywhere in my apartment, I have generally just been disabling the WiFi.
One sort of issue I have noticed with the networking on the Ouya is that Android was built to allow for multiple network interfaces, which is only natural given that pretty much every smartphone has WiFi and also some sort of "mobile" data as well. Turning off the WiFi doesn't seem to always "stick" for whatever reason, so I may end up just "forgetting" my normal WiFi network in the network settings to prevent the WiFi from being used.
I have been toying with the idea of taking the Ouya mobo out of the aluminum casing, as its trivial to do and many people have speculated that the case is causing BlueTooth and WiFi signal issues. I HAVE experienced some weak connectivity to the controllers, and wanted to isolate the issue to either the controller or the console.

I tried taking it out of its case, and it didn't have any noticeable impact on my WiFi.
what about Bluetooth? Thats the thing that would effect the controllers, which are the element which is having a reception problem...

I didn't know the case was aluminum. Seems kind of odd choice of material. The Ouya isn't handled much, so there's no tactile advantage to using aluminum. The Ouya has a cooling fan, so heat dispersion isn't a huge issue if they chose plastic instead of aluminum.
What's the wired network speeds like? Can anyone test it?

Since switching to Ethernet (and turning off WiFi) things go much faster. Streams 1080p movies without an issue, and game downloads are pretty fast. Thumbnail loading on the OUYA menus still could be faster, but I think that's more of a firmware issue with the way those are handled, rather than internet speed.
i think the worst part is that they refuse to fix anything or acknowledge the issue. This topic is covered on several other websites, even their own support website. Ouya seems to keep saying this isn't a global issues. so does that mean in the future if we are having other issues they have to be global in order to be fixed or updated?
This seems crazy. i have 4 devices right next to the ouya and my ouya download speeds are less than 107 kbs, but all my other devices are between 5-10 mbs.
i tried to erase everything, reboot it, and now i cant even connect and maintain a wifi connection and get past the ouya upgrade page on set up. It says im connected, then timesout and says i have no wifi.
and to make matters worse im not really close to a ethernet connection, my router is upstairs and my tv is downstairs.
This just seems crazy that a company could releases a product in such an alpha stage and not take the people who helped make them successful seriously.
I've seen speeds of nearly 2-3mbps on my Ouya, which is consistent with my Nexus 10, laptop, and others (no way to install steam to see if Ic an get Steam's stupid 7mbps...)

Weak Bluetooth Signal

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is a common problem for the SGS3. Previous to my HM1900 Samsung Bluetooth I had the HM1800. The 1800 worked flawlessly, around 25 feet or so through a wall, turning my head, etc., how a Bluetooth should work. The HM1900, however, is awful in comparison. During work, I keep my phone in my right breast pocket with the headset in my right ear. I stream music while working (in near-perfect 4G) though if I put my arm over my chest, or turn my head, I lose signal. Could it be the headset itself, or is it a possibility that it's a combination of both?
On the phone I have the Otterbox Commuter case, so it isn't that thick. The phone is not rooted and running 4.3. I have attempted at doing a software update, but nothing downloads. Is there somewhere to download a software update for the Bluetooth itself on the phone? Or is this just a lost cause?
I would rather keep the HM1900 just because of how well built it is, I easily ruined my HM1800 within two weeks for it not being as robust.
And another side note! Volume is damned quite on the headset even with everything at full volume. Any volume control fix or app?

Ive had similar issues save the volume .. its not your case unless its metal and only real thing you can do is re - pair the headset and the phone .

I've had similar issues, what should i do?
I have problems when streaming music to a bluetooth speaker. When using iphone on max volume sound is much louder than when I try using my galaxy s3. Do you know a way how to fix that?

I as well have had this problem. Mine comes and goes. Phone volume, Pandora volume, and headset volume are at maximum and it's still not very loud through the headset.

Repairing doesn't do anything unfortunately.
Is it possible there's just a weak bluetooth antennae in the phone, or it has somehow become damaged/unhooked?
Going back to my first post, the older headset worked wonderfully, but this new one isn't doing so hot. Turn my head; lose signal, place a hand over phone; lose signal. It will however work from five feet away crystal clear with no obstructions, but I must be within sight and have my headset facing the phone. Seems a little ridiculous for a bluetooth if I can't have the phone in my pocket.
If when checking the Bluetooth association you find general poor performance, then there are a few things you can attempt. Initially, make certain your gadget's batteries are appropriately charged or are overall new. Contingent upon the gadget, you can discover this data in either the Bluetooth menu or the Bluetooth framework inclination by selecting "Show more information" from the apparatus menu. On the off chance that your gadget has removable batteries, than regardless of the fact that the framework reports them as being healthy, give the battery compartment a decent investigation to check whether any consumption has happened from a spilling battery.

Unfortunately the batteries are not removable in my device. They are fully charged as well. I think a lot of this comes down to the signal on the BlueTooth itself brand to brand and model to model. Still though, there might be a fix.
I have come to the conclusion that the Bluetooth headset is the problem going from one device to another; from one Galaxy S3 to an HTC One to my current Galaxy Note 4. The problem is the HM1900. Purchase the HM1700, it's not as robust, but it sure fits better and gives better sound.

Erratic GPS

I have taken my smart watch 3 running with me quite a few times over the last 3 weeks since i bought it, and i seem every time, to get some quite odd gps issues. Tried with both runkeeper and ghostracer and both are the same, which leads me to think it is the watch.
When tracking a run, the watch just all of a sudden, seems to lose GPS, no signal what so ever. Sometimes it picks it back up after a few minutes, sometimes it doesnt come back at all.
I have tried a factory reset on the watch and that didnt help at all. I have also tested this in both built up and open areas, in areas that the GPS diag tool in the dev menu says that i have access to 19 satellites, so should have no issues with GPS, but constantly do.
Is this something others have experienced? Or could this be a faulty watch?
i have had similar yet different experiences with mine.
two nights ago, had both runkeeper and ghostracer running at the same time standalone. at 3.6km ghost racer stopped tracking GPS yet runkeepr was fine.
then last night at 2.9km ghostracer again stop tracking gps. but i forgot to run runkeeper at the same time so no knowing if software or hardware.
its an annoying problem to say the least. i have mentioned this on ghostracer Google+ page.
Same problem here. Love this watch as a running watch when it works. Guess I need to start look for a normal running watch that allows me to play my music from the watch. Love the freedom of not having a phone with me.

I find the ghost racer app buggy as hell on my watch, works fine on my phone but every time i go stand alone it craps out it's got to the stage i only run it if i have my phone with me.
I have had no problems what so ever with Runkeeper so this is what i have been using on my watch can't wait till other devs get there act together and start making there apps work as stand alone on android wear.

GhostRacer works fine for me: better to to get 4 "steps" of gps signal before starting the run.
I have had the same awful experience since I did few test runs in the past 3 weeks with the Smartwatch 3. I tried the Endomondo and RunKeeper. both can be running stand alone on the watch. The GPS signals were easily lost and could not recover for a long period during the run. It seems to be a problem of the watch, not the apps. I had a 20k run, which ended up with only around 10k was tracked.
In the last trial taken yesterday with Endomondo, which is nice with the GPS signal strength display. I had turned on airplane mode this time. It did have some improvement. The GPS signal lost after 5k run, but I hadn't been aware of its loss until 10k. Then I click open the app and made sure the GPS signal was recovered before resuming the run. It then seems fine until end of run that totally tracked 21.2k out of the 26.3k run.
It's really a frustrating problem to have a runners' watch without proper GPS tracking.

i have the same problems with my watch.
after 5k the ghostracer app did not update speed and distance anymore. but the app itself was still okay because the heartrate was still changing and accurate. after 5 k more it suddenly picks up signal again. but of course all running data is useless.
after the issues with the bluetooth and google play music - now the next issue which destroys the actual reason to choose this watch.
to have a stand alone running smartwach with offine music and gps without the need to take the phone with me.
i wonder if this is a software (firmware/wear) issue and can be fixed with the next updates or in the worst case a hardware/design issue.
what do you think?
Same issue here with Endomondo. I haven't tried any other apps but for the last few days I'm getting erratic signal that will randomly stop working and usually never comes back. Really frustrating and hoping it's able to be fixed.
I tried using Ghost Racer and I am still getting constant GPS drop outs that don't come back. I've run the same course before issues cropped up with no problems at all.
Anyone have any additional thoughts on this? It's getting to be very annoying when your full run isn't tracking. Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same issues. I contracted android wear support through chat and they are going to forward my request to their hardware specialist. They said I was the first they have heard about the issue so speak up to them, make this issue known!
I just got the 5.1 update and itching to go for a run to test the GPS. Has anyone tried since the ota and is there any difference?

I have tried it (7.2km, mainly in forest) and the GPS signal has been pretty accurate.
Before the update I had a lot of issues on the same route.
So there is a chance that it is finaly fixed.
It seems that the GPS problem has been solved with the 5.1.1 update. I have had a run of 15.6K with Endomondo. It logged exactly the same. But unfortunately, the workout data was lost without being synced with phone app as usual, but the GPS problem definitely solved.
Well I guess I'm an unlucky one. My GPS has always been unreliable - not just inaccurate, but unreliable in that it will stop working part way through all of my runs. I'm lucky to get 2-3 miles before it stops working. I've tried Runkeeper and Ghostracer and it does the same on both. On Ghostracer it shows the GPS "bars", and I wait until it gets 3-4 bars before I run, then as I run it will gradually lose bars until it loses signal completely. I run on open streets with no trees or other obstructions to the sky so not sure what's going on. I upgraded to 5.1.1 in hopes that would address the issue but no such luck. Today I'm on my third ph call with Sony trying to get it RMA'd for repair.
I have yet to run without the GPS losing signal. Tried Runkeeper and Ghost Racer. Usually signal does not return. First 2-3 miles usually works pretty well. Any distance longer I lose signal. Might be heading back to Amazon before my 30 days are up.

Tried the duct tape on the back. First longer run that I did not lose GPS. Not really loving the solution putting duct tape on every time I run.
It's absolutely the wet (sweating) causing the dropout. I had tried the duct tape approach, but still experienced the dropout after several kms, which might be due to the wet surrounding. Then I wiped the moisture off the duct tape, and the GPS signal was locked again immediately. The signals were most accurate when I simply took the watch off the wrist and held it during the run, that effectively kept it away from my sweating skin. What a design from Sony!
I'd better try the wristband approach before I decide to dump it!
So, if the moisture is really effecting it, then it would imply that the antenna is mounted in the rear, or grounded to the case. The extra moisture (conductivity from the body salts) against the case means that your body is now able to attenuate (or ground out) the antenna, thus disrupting the signal.
Noting this, i think i may take some flat clear acrylic hobby paint, and give a good layer to the back, and see if it helps. The paint should provide an insulating layer without really irritating the skin.. Can't really hurt to try..

Rate this thread to express how you think the Maze Alpha's Wifi performs. A higher rating indicates that it has excellent range, throughput, and signal strength. Like when you're taking a dump in the bedroom upstairs, do your videos have to buffer or do they come through without interruption?

It's the worst wiFi I've ever seen on a cell phone. I have a good router (at least I think). A tp-link Archer C20, which covers my entire home. With the Maze Alpha you disconnect a distance of 5 meters onwards. In the 5GHz band it just does not stay connected.
Bad bad Wi-Fi! It remains connected, but frequently Internet is not available: so I disable/enable the Wi-Fi button, and Internet came back.
It sounds like it always lose the DNS.

It's really bad. Disappointing...
Not very good wifi range indeed. I hope the next update will fix it ! (if it's not material of course)

Same here. Got mine yesterday and I am wondering the bad comments. Wifi is not top top, but I have seen some other expensive devices that have much worse wifi.
My pc and phone are both same distance from the router and my phone has a better connection than my wifi dongle. Also, when I visit the regular haunts where I would fight for wifi on some phones, this phone is exceptionally better. I'm not sure why others are having problems but in my experience of different phones over the years, this phone is pretty good for me.
Currently, it's making its way up stairs, round a corner and through a corridor to my room which is connected ok, not 100% stable but until I moved my pc (netgear) wifi adaptor closer with a usb extension, it was a stronger connection, my phone if probably 5ft further away from the dongle and showing half signal while my dongle is now showing full. If I put my phone there, it goes full.
Don't forget there are other issues that mess with signals, other signals mostly.
I would suggest starting right next to whatever is broadcasting and then take a walk in varying directions and ascertaining what other signals could be messing with it.

I solved the issue! I've noticed that in office, with ad old access point, my Maze Alpha works well. And, I read that some of you have no problem with Wi-Fi. So, I thought... maybe the problem is the 5GHz?
So, I disabled it, and now the Wi-Fi works well.
Before, I had many problems standing 1 meter from access point, and in another room the Wi-Fi was unusable.

I've turned off it on my access point. On the Maze Alpha I didn't find how to turn off.
