Upgrading from rooted/rommed G3 to G4, but don't want to activate G4. Possible? - Verizon LG G4

Advice Please:
I have a G3 with PacMan ROM and it's freaking sweet. However, my infrared/camera (which I use hundreds of times/day for work) is not working when I shoot certain types of materials (works on leather, blurs on cloth now). I was planning on just waiting to get the G4 when more ROMs were out. However, now I'm rushed to pull the trigger. So here's my question:
I want to not activate my new G4, but use it for work over wi-fi and continue to use my G3 for everything else (calls/texts). Since I had to order my G4 to get more GB, the Verizon rep is telling me that I can have the G4 and keep my service on the G3. However, they will need to 1) Activate the G4/Deactivate G3, 2) Deactivate G4/Reactivate G3. Will I have any problems reactivating my G3 since it's rooted and ROMmed? Will this cause any problems with Verizon? Will they even notice?
Also, If I'm able to do this... Can I go ahead and root/Rom the inactivated G4 and activate it once a satisfactory ROM is out (and installed on it)?
I know this is complex and doesn't do many people much good, so MANY THANKS to whoever lends a hand!!!!!
I hate being in this predicament... If only we lived in a world where all the ROMs were available to all carriers within the first month of release... if only... LOL

Yes, you can activate the G4 and go back to the G3, even with root. When you activate the G4 make sure you go through the setup process before you pull the Sim and install the Sim back into the g3. Wifi will work on the G4 without the Sim at that point. Done it many times.

I'll second this... As I just did it lol. I bought my G4 back in October and used it for a week then went back to my G3 while waiting for some more development to happen. I'm back on the 4 now. Jumping back and forth works fine.

I juump from ZTE Moto E prepaid G3 and the G4. works fine with a good standing sim.

Thanks so much for the help!
To push it a step further... Could I Root/Rom the new G4, and then return it back to Verizon in my 2 week trial period without any alarms going off? Would I just need to un-root and flash stock Rom before returning?
The guys at the Verizon store are so oblivious to android development that I wouldn't be surprised if they took a rommed and rooted G4 back without realizing it!

Unfortunately I don't think we have any roms for our verizon g4 and most likely will never have more than stock based unless someone unlocks the boot loader or comes up with another bump and I think they've about given up trying which really sucks cuz I have 2 of then lol

Grim news...
I'm stuck with Verizon since I use a company phone. What's the best Verizon phone that has sufficient ROM options?

Well I put it like this, I have 2 g4's and 2 days ago traded one for a g3 vs985 and I'm still in utter shock at how much this g3 blows those g4 outta the water in every single aspect and I've tested this thing balls out non stop and I hated lollipop and marshmallow until now that I'm running resurrection remix 6.0.1..rooting and custom recovery were a single click each and all I had to do was flash a 35b bootstack and modem to get mm running. I can't stress highly enough how much you'll regret getting rid of the g3 cuz there isn't very much to advance to with Verizon for a modder like us. The way they lock down their phones is just evil and the g3 is a rare miracle for a Verizon device. Have you done a lot of flashing yet on your g3?

That's what I was afraid of, thanks for confirming my suspicions! I have been using the PACMAN ROM for over a year now! Which ROMS do you recommend? Also note: I'm just good enough to root and flash. I've never messed with kernels or anything else.
I've run into a few quirks with my PACMAN ROM, nothing serious though (except for my camera not focusing as well anymore). Maybe a new ROM is just the change I need!
THANKS

Man on the g3 there's more Roms than I can begin to find a good start, hell I just started going down the list on Android File Host just search vs985 and there's over 400 files to start with. A good tip is to get a copy of each Android version's bootstack, modem, and kernal zips on XDA or you'll get updater script errors from the base band being off. Most likely you'll only have to stick with the latest version cuz most people go up in Android versions, not me I'm all over the place and still consider JB and kk the best and my personal favorite. But the Dirty Unicorns mm rom has really stepped up and cool as hell , especially the unique nav bar. If you run into problems finding the right bootstacks PM me and I'll hook you up

Oh yea a new ROM changes everything but unfortunately I doubt the Verizon g4 will ever have much ROM action and I'd burn my g4 before I would my g3 without hesitation lol

Q: Crucial answers needed before purchase or decide to wait for Note 4

I'm coming off 2 generations of HTC phones and I'm due an upgrade with Sprint. I bypassed on the GS5 and One M8 for various reasons and the G3 seems to fit my needs but I have a few questions first.
1) Root is must. While I know the phone can be rooted, I'm worried about updates afterward. I'm fine with a stock ROM but I need to know that after I root I can still update Android, bug fixes, radios, new features. Can this be done and if so how (only a very basic description is needed, not a guide lol). I've read the the bootloader can not be unlocked so what are limitations associted with that?
2) Will Android "L" and it's ART only runtime work on this phone? If so, I guess that relates to my question #1 if I'm already rooted.
3) Actually, that's really it. The phone looks amazing and I'm ok with it "only" being a snapdragon 801 with the 805 and beyond right around the corner but I need to know that if I root, I'll be able to easily flash new updates as they become available.
Now that the phone is in the wild in the US, are there any clearer answers to my questions? Thank You.
Hi, first of all I would like to say the phone is great, it seems to get some negative comments here but since I got one I have been very happy with my first LG handset.
Ok we'll you can't get ota's after rooting, I haven't received any official updates yet so I'm not sure if we can just full uproot with supersu to get the it a again or not. But flashing a stock firmware is a pretty simple procedure and the kind folks here at xda keep us up to date with all the stock firmware so you can update and then reroot.
ART will run on this phone no problem at all however it seems android L may break root so if root is a must you may be best advised to look into you're updates before hand, which is another advantage of getting you're stock rom's at xda. Would be pretty frustrating to agree to a ota and find out you can no longer root when it's done.
But in short, root is fine on 'nearly' all he variants and flashing stock fw manually is not to much fuss.
Hope that helps you a little.

It does help a bit. Thank you but I need to have this clear in my head. With HTC, in order to update radios, you needed s-off, which was more than just root. That's what I'm hesitant about here, if I root, and want an update the g3, I have to unroot, update and re root? What if the update prevents root? I don't want to be stuck with a choice of updating or keeping root on a phone that won't be able to stay updated with the latest version and patches of software.
Really, knowing that I'll be able to root, and update firmware, radios and software throughout the life of the phone is the only thing holding me back from an LG G3 or waiting for the note 4 and a probably larger development base. I'd prefer the G3 so I hope it can be assured.

If you're into rooting and flashing custom rooms I would seriously avoid this phone and wait for note 4. Trust me when you get your hands on this phone the first thing you want to do is get rid of the lag. It seriously lags worse then S5. I'm a HTC fan and found the lag really annoying constantly using task manager which I hate doing.
So if you are a rooter and love to flash roms don't buy.

its funny you say that. I looked at the phone today. First thing I thought of when I looked at it was touchwiz. The UI just seemed very laggy. Maybe after all the hype I was just expecting a bit more. Nice phone but didn't "wow" me.

I'm coming from the s4 and s3 prior to that. I have looked into every phone and leak there is but decided the G3 was the right fit.
I got my G3 early Thursday from AT&T and I have no complaints thus far. I do notice slight lag from time to time but if you're on XDA and are use to custom slimmed down ROMs then yes, you'll kind of notice it. But trust me, it is far from a deal breaker.
Here's the thing, in a few weeks there will be numerous ROM's that have stripped away the bloatware and added a few tweaks and the lag will be non existent. I already have my phone rooted and have deleted most of the bloatware and added UI tweaks. I barely notice lag and I'm actually enjoying the UI.
This is just my 2 cents. And being loyal Samsung customer for years I can honestly say I prefer LG 's new UI over touchwiz any day.

I rooted with ioroot, deleted all useless apps and froze others that I don't use with titanium backup.
I still have some lag but nothing that is driving me crazy by any means. The only time it lagged for me was when I used the LG health screen and I think the photo gallery. I turned off the health screen and I've always use QuickPic instead of stock gallery. Most my lag is gone but not all.

How is the Note 3 the worse phone ever? I note 3 on both VZW and AT&T using KK. Both work great. Personally much better than my Note 1 & 2. I don't have any lag. I did order the LG 3 to replace my VZW Note 3. My only complaint with the Note 3 is horrible pictures when it does its "processing" garbage.

Please Pledge to the Root Cause!

Just a friendly reminder that there aren't many of us smart enough to figure out how to root this beast. If we throw a bunch of cash at them that might motivate them to work even harder. Plus, it's totally worth it! What's $50? Too much? Fine, give $5. Whatever you can afford! I bet if we got that pot up to 100k it would get solved pretty darned quick. Let's do it! Don't be a cheapskate!
Thanks for reading. I promise not to tell you what to do other than this one time. Ha!
I agree man
Just sucks so sad that ATT screwing us like this, while T-Mobile gets all the root Recovery love they want, and even Sprint is better, and dare I say Verizon not as bad as ATT is lately
I remember just two years ago, the ATT Note 2 had root and Recovery immediately after release, and the ATT XDA Note 2 forums were jammed packed with ROM's and kernels. Why did ATT make such a drastic change to lock it down so hard now ? Where as T-Mobile allows it to be unlocked with ease ?
ATT allows HTC to still be unlocked, you can buy the ATT One M8 and root it and install custom Recovery out of the box with ease. But no way is that possible with the ATT S5 or Note 4, but why ATT ?

Just thinking out loud...but at this time shouldn't you all wait for Lollipop to be released on this beast? Word is that it has more security and will be even tougher to root. So say someone roots KitKat..claims the Bounty, then Lollipop comes along and kills root again and those buying new phones with Lollipop preinstalled would be SOL. JM2C...but I also know it takes time to build up pledges.
Umm.. iiif we gain root I'm sure people would be smart enough not to upgrade to Lollipop but wait for a dev to make a Lollipop ROM.

That won't help people buying phones after the update with Lollipop preinstalled though. They will be stuck without root and have to start another bounty...just thinking out loud. And you would be surprised how many just hit that "update" button while rooted and get stuck in a boot loop.
Assuming root is achieved and someone bought a new note4 it came w 5.0.. couldnt one of those just take the official NIE firmware and flash it via odin.. then they could root and install a 5.0 custom rom?

In theory..however Samsung has been matching bootloaders, basebands and OS release. So as seen on other models not having the 5.0 bootloader and baseband will cause the 5.0 ROM to be stuck in a boot loop. So it may be some time before developers crack that. Even an unlocked rootable phone like the Sprint S3 required you to Odin 4.4 before running any stock 4.4 ROMs...the wrong baseband there caused a hard brick. So it is not as simple as it sounds.

Probably has everything to do with Gov't contracts... Samsung has been singing the praises of it's KNOX system to businesses and the Gov't, to to truly make KNOX effective, it needs to be locked so that you can't disable or remove it. This way if one of their phones gets lost or stolen (and they are using the enterprise security packages) it is even more difficult to get to the data.
Why not allow the folks who want them locked and secure buy special ones so the rest of us can have free and open devices you ask? Because it costs more (time as well as money) to divide up your inventory that way. you'd have to forecast how many of the secured phones you will need and order them that way. But what if that big gov't contract falls through? you are now sitting on potentially thousands of phones that your general users won't want given that they can choose to get the unlocked version. OEM won't simply take them back, unless you pay some sort of restock fee. You could re-flash them yourself with the unlocked ROM, but now you are talking about manually unboxing, flashing and then re-sealing thousands of phones. (Not optimal,)
In the end, you're better off buying an unlocked device up front as opposed to hoping that someone can crack the bootloader later on after the release. It's obviously getting harder and harder for even the truly talented DEVs to crack these bootloaders. I honestly doubt that root will be achieved on this thing prior to Lollipop beginning it rollout. There is a build for it being tested right now with very few issues remaining.
Clock is ticking.... Me? I personally could care less for root at this point. I get un-Godly battery life and performance as it is based upon my usage. Not a popular view with many in this forum, I know. I used to long for root and flash ROMs like crazy myself. It was almost like an addiction.

[Q] Noob questions about rooting for this phone

1) Is this phone likely to get root soon after release? Just based on LG history or whatever is known about the phone so far.
2) Does being on Verizon usually mean waiting longer or not getting root access at all? If Verizon-rooted phones are rare, please let me know some good alternatives.
Thanks all for putting up with me.

Im sure there will be root. but it will take a while, and i dont see anybody posting on the dev section talking about root. so probobly in afew months, once they read the source of the OS, and figure out how to make root.
Im from big red, and they always lock there bootloaders. so thats alittle more work and codeing which turns into abit more waiting time if you want custom roms. but G4 seems like a pretty popular phone, so im sure root will come eventually

This phone hasn't been fully released yet. It will def get root. I'd give it a month or so.
I have Verizon and the G3 was unlocked within 3 months. I'm hoping since this is Qualcomm's first hexa-core, there'll be some exploits to gain root/unlock BL faster. Take it from a Sammy guy, WAIT THE FEW MONTHS. Samsung hasn't seen an unlocked BL for Verizon in 2 years.

yep, probably gonna pull the trigger on the att g4 with their nasty corporate locked BL crap. I'd normally be concerned about root, but in this case I'm not terribly worried, because this phone will have SO much attention in the dev community. now, getting the att BL unlocked to run twrp... that's another story and could be a very long time if at all (just for the att version).

Questions

Hello everyone. I am getting ready to transfer service from att back to big red and am probably going to end up with the G4, and was wondering what the development is like on this phone. Does CM have any development moving forward to the device, anyone working on a rooted/debloated/fixed ROM. I know the device only just got root this summer, so I know it takes time to get these things, but just wondering if anything is at least in the works.

A bootloader unlock is made and will be released soon, BUT it is only available to the first known software available upon launch, any updates since then ruin it. So basically...you will not be able to BL unlock your device if you buy it now, meaning no ROMs or anything besides root stuff. Also, there are no ROMs available or anything yet for the VZW G4.
And by the way, I highly advise against coming back to VZW if you like Roms and that stuff, Verizon locks everything down and they suck!

Need help/advice

Advice Please:
I have a G3 with PacMan ROM and it's freaking sweet. However, my infrared/camera (which I use hundreds of times/day for work) is not working when I shoot certain types of materials (works on leather, blurs on cloth now). I was planning on just waiting to get the G4 when more ROMs were out. However, now I'm rushed to pull the trigger. So here's my question:
I want to not activate my G4, but use it for work over wi-fi and continue to use my G3 for everything else (calls/texts).
If only we lived in a world where all the ROMs were available to all carriers within the first month of release... if only... LOL
