[Q] Bind screenshot command to softkey input - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I am rooted with SuperSU 2.67, running EX kernel and stock ROM. Is there any known mod or a way to edit my build.prop so that softkey input (say, long press on the overview key) triggers a screenshot? I have searched but so far found nothing. This would be a very useful feature and I am sure others would use it too, as taking screenshots on the N5X is a bit awkward.

What is awkward about taking screenshots like every other phone out there? Have you tried taking a screen shot with an LG G2 or 3 or 4? That is awkward.
That said, my guess is there is an xposed module that allows you to reassign the software keys to do this. You or someone else could modify the stock systemui.apk to allow a long press of one of the buttons to take a screenshot.

Whoops. Tagged the wrong person before. @Tulsadiver you like to do things like this. Have you ever coded a long press action to a navigation bar button before?

I haven't but there is a first for everything, lol. There is a google app that starts on a long press of the home key. That could maybe be changed to a screenshot capture...

@OGNatan. It's not the button control you want, but Gravity Box (xposed module) has a quick tile that will do screenshot as well as a screenshot command using the power button.

Indeed. The app is called Home Button Launcher. In my opinion its not a great solution. The keycode for screenshot is 120 btw.

Mine does it right now. I have google now launcher installed but i use Nova (i don't have any buttons configured in it.). I am running xTrafactory. Does yours not open google? I had never tried it until today.

FWIW, there are dozens of screen shot apps on the Playstore that use various strategies to capture.
For Example, Screenshot Capture by AppDoodle runs as a service and overlays a small button on the screen and captures at the touch of that button. The app can also be set up to shake the phone for screenshots.

Yes, Google opens when I long press the home button. But Home button launcher allows you to open any app(s) by long pressing the home button. For example you can have long press home to open straight to Google Voice search rather than the Google App.

Wow. Just got home from work and all these replies
I have tried several Play Store apps, but none of them give the functionality I want and/or run some kind of service that could be a battery drain.
@PiousInquisitor there probably is an xposed module for this floating around somewhere, but I am not currently running xposed. I guess for now the best course of action is to see about modifying systemui.apk :dread:

ever since the Google app added the Share button to Now on Tap, I've been taking screenshots that way.
Works perfectly and much quicker.

honeybar true fullscreen

Honeybar is a good app to hide/unhide the notification bar in android 3.2. Its great but i have noticed a little lag. Anyone else notice this?
I have been using HoneyBar for a day now. I haven't noticed any slowing of my A100 - what exactly do you mean by "lag"?
Some applications are not optimized for the tablets full resolution an in turn lags/stutters/run slow.... I also use Honeybar allot but can't in some games
Sent from Wicced's rooted A100 16gb HoneyComb 3.2 using XDA PREMIUM
Input lag, menu lag. Its not real bad, but its there.
Honeybar although does the job causes stutter in home and app drawer. Just glad I only paid $1. I use this one called HideBar and doesn't affect performance at all and ofcourse no lag and better interface to hide and several options to unhide. And its free! Kudos to the dev.

I think we need to change thread title to just "true full screen"

man, lag is definitely something annoying.
but whats worse, is on portrait mode, you can't click recent app button without triggering the hide bar button!!
contact the dev today, and we'll see what happens
@aznmode thanks for the info about Hidbar, will check it and report back, definitely worth the try
update:
tried the app, and looks GREAT
on both landscap and portrait mode, but i hoped it wasn't with a notification bar (less stack)

What do you mean less stacked? I love hide bar. I'm thinking about creating a new thread for it. Since this thread title is Honeybar specific.
we should start up a new thread for all the various tweeks found scattered throughout this forum. Although once I get around to zipaligning and deodexing this rom I'm going to try to release it as a one stop solution. You'll just have to push the system.img file through adb (I hope it works).

well, with the additional icon for the tweak(to click on and hide). I just didn't like more stuff on my tab bar!
i think it would be great if someone could get the home button to hide and unhide the bar at bottom. Make it a full screen button. Could it be done?

Thats true theres already a lot of stuff in the task bar BUT the taskbar is always there no matter what app you're in so its quicker access. Id rather it be there than to have another button floating around my screen or to have it as a widget.
Maybe if you have a better idea how to activate/deactivate it we can email the developer to see what he can do?

I totally agree and I posted this question before in the how to edit home button thread. I tried editing home function and point to the directory of hidebar but that didn't work. But again I was just guessing on my part. I'm sure there has to be a way.

An extra icon isnt so bad IMO. As far as making the home button hide/unhide is a good idea but I like having the home button be a home button when I have the status bar hidden. So when I'm in full screen and I need to go home I just press it. Otherwise Id have to press it to enable status bar, then press home on the status bar, then press it again to disable status bar to go back to full screen. So for me this would be 50/50 advantage.

I can easily make a modified version of the application to hard code our home button in there to hide/unhide the taskbar, but I don't want to face being banned because I "stole" code. Anyway I would just like to give back to the community because of people like crossix stepping up.
Never mind I looked and see the code on github I'll have something soon hopefully

Home Key Double Click doesn't work

I'm wondering if any of you guys experience this. I got my Galaxy s3 almost a month ago. Out of the box, when I double click the home key, it launches S voice. However, after Rooting (or sometime after that), I noticed that double clicking the home screen doesn't launch the S voice anymore. I toggled the setting under S-Voice menu to activate or deactivate double click launch but there's no difference -- still doesn't launch it. I did update my ROM to Kyan ROM hoping changing the ROM will make it work however, it still doesn't work. I even followed the instruction in replacing double click launch form S-Voice to Google NOW, unfortnately, still no luck.
Anybody knows how to check or fix this? Really wanted to use the double click function for Google NOW.

Check kyan's changelog and thread to see if it's been changed or if anyone else is having the same issue... you're running custom software so this needs to be addressed or answered in his ROM thread...

I use apex launcher and there is a setting in there for the home button to open any app (I chose the google search app). I have it set up so that first press goes to home page of the launcher and second press opens up google now.
I did use home2shortcut as well but still didn't work. I don't think its purely a kyan rom issue as I had this issue when j was still using stock.

This work around worked. Seems like a great replacement to the touchwiz... wondering what functionality does the touchwiz have that this doesn't have. Also, I'm still hoping I could get a way to make the double click work without APEX Launcher... but yeah, this is a good workaround!
Thanks!

Key Plus - Change LG V10 Volume key shortcut to flashlight or any app (without root)

Hello friends, I am Naveen Naushad, an indie Android developer from India. I developed this app for G3, with which you can change the Volume button launch apps when the phone is locked, that too without root access.
Some Reddit users tested it on V10 as well and have confirmed it is working correctly. You will be able to modify the Volume Up action to toggle flashlight, launch a different app (instead of QuickMemo+) or even open a custom launcher shortcut. Unfortunately Volume Down cannot be changed as LG hardcoded it to launch camera, starting from Lollipop. Most people are ok with that as they need to change QuickMemo+ only.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apptuners.keyplusapp
Requirements:
Stock LG ROM (or ROMS based on it)
QuickMemo installed and working properly
Not compatible with official flip case
Request:
If you like the app, please rate, review and +1 it at Google Play Store. That will increase the visibility of the app tremendously.
Confirmed. (On Verizon V10) Works nicely with the flashlight toggle. Even with the fingerprint lock. (Need to tap lock button, then vol up button twice to toggle) TYVM!
I really like the idea of this app! Would be nice to have the flashlight up there.

Thanks! Just a heads up for anyone else who may experience this: you have to have quickmemo installed to set this up. After unlocking my bootloader it was not installed by default. Had to download it via LG updates before double tapping up worked to give me a program association dialog. Additionally, freezing quickmemo afterwards caused the button to stop working again.
Didn't work on my AT&T V10 H900.
Now after revoking administrative rights and uninstalling app shortcut buttons won't work at all anymore , it won't launch camera or capture.

That shouldn't be happening as the app does not modify any system file (as it does not have root access).
Were default shortcuts (Camera and QuickMemo) working before you installed Key Plus? Also can you check the in Settings whether Shortcut keys are enabled?

Affirmative, both. And the fact that I'm not rooted I and it doesn't use root is what makes this so odd. Not sure what to make of this.

Great app. Meager donation sent.
Thank you. No donation is meagre. Considering only less than 1% of users have donated, it is a big deal.
Got it. Works well. This was something I was missing from Xposed and I honestly haven't wanted to install Xposed this go around.
I know we have it in that little second screen but this just makes it so much easier since it's based on the physical buttons I can do it in the dark... Lol.
I donated as well. I feel like it's worth it. Thanks friend!

I have it working with my V10 H961N..... very thoughtful app! I hated that the only option for the short cut was quickmemo.
Thanks for this app, it's great.
One issue I am having though is now when I hit the quick memo button on my second screen, my flashlight turns on and then only way to get it off is to turn off the screen and double tap your shortcut. Not a deal breaker.

Unfortunately that issue is something that can be debugged only with a V10 in hand. I have been trying to find someone with the phone here but the fact that it has not been released in India, makes it difficult.

Kill App option for Nav bar?

I have seen a few discussions about the topic of getting the Kill App option for the Nav bar. Holding the back button would be the ideal implementation for me. I find it much quicker than going to recent apps and flicking away the app that I want to kill.
I have not found an answer on how I might do this on the Pixel 3. Seems like Oreo had a Developer Option that was removed in Pie.
A Gesture app seems like one approach, but I would like to hear from others on how you do it?
Thoughts?

Hey, do you mean that you want to kill all recents by long pressing the back button?
If so, I had a quick look and basically a third party app can't really do that because in java the REMOVE_TASKS option is a signature-level permission. This means the app needs to be signed by the same signing key as the device firmware. In short, a rom developer could implement this, but not a third party developer.
In short, maybe a request to your rom dev is the way to go!

It is a setting that GravityBox allows and comes in handy to quickly exit an active application. I hope we see this feature on the Pixel 3 XL custom ROM that will be coming out.

Awesome. Are you using the Tulsa mods too? When I install the SystemUIedgebase.zip for the Tulsa mods, I lost all my other mods (center clock small ampm, small LTE, no GPS pin and 3Minit).
I would love to get the EdgeSense and the Status bar mods working at the same time. I have a similar question posted on the Tulsa Mod thread.
EDIT: I had to install the Magisk Mod for Edge Sense and now they both work! I dont see the Kill App as an Action in the Edge Sense app. Is it called something else?
EDIT2: I had to enable ROOT for the EdgeSense app, now I see Kill App. YEAH!

Another suggestion - All In One Gestures! It has a long-press back to kill app option, though I should note I'm using it having both rooted and reverted to the old, 3 button nav bar as per Mishaal's guide. Plus, doesn't work quite as perfectly as it did on my old galaxy phones with capacitive keys, but it does the job most of the time...

I'm not sure what All-In-One does when you've still got the gesture navigation pill installed, but these are the settings I've got enabled having reverted to the 3 button navigation (https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-android-pie-gestures-google-pixel-3/):
You of course have to give the app root access, but otherwise no special settings as far as I recall from setting it up. Hope this helps!

Is "All in One Gestures" the same as "XDA Navigation Gestures" When I search the play store for all in one than the XDA Apo comes up.

My pleasure! It is a different app. I'm coming to the Pixel from a 3.5 year old Galaxy S6(!), and I just restored the app from a titanium backup. I think it was designed for phones with capacitive buttons, which might explain why it's no longer officially available. For this reason, it doesn't work quite as perfectly on the Pixel as it did on the S6 (the kill app function doesn't seem to click with a few apps). But it does do the trick in most cases. For me, I'm so used to the long-press gesture that it was worth going back to 3 button navigation for this alone, and worth sticking with it despite some imperfections in All-In-One when it comes to the Pixel. I suppose if you're still on the gesture system, you'll have to weigh up whether its worth removing the pretty new interface (and the Pixel launcher along the way, as Mishaal explains) for a functional yet slightly deficient alternative...
Here is another explanation

Android 11 - Recent Apps

I upgraded to 11 yesterday but my recent app screen is still like it was in 10.
I don't get the screenshot option in the bottom left corner only way to take a screen shot is holding the power button and the volume down button.
Also the recent app screen no longer launches from my home screen only if I am inside another app.
What do you guys think is going on? (Stock Pixel 3XL running Nova Launcher)
Thanks,

I don't get the screenshot option in the bottom left corner only way to take a screen shot is holding the power button and the volume down button.
Also the recent app screen no longer launches from my home screen only if I am inside another app.
What do you guys think is going on? (Stock Pixel 3XL running Nova Launcher)
Thanks,
Rodney

Don't use Nova. Those functions are specific to the Pixel launcher. I have them both on my 3XL.

I thought it was Nova also! I switched back to the Pixel Launcher and still the same. I think something isn't complete with the install some how.

If you didn't try it, enable Pixel Launcher, and reboot.

You need to be on either 3 button navigation mode or full gesture mode, it does not show on 2 button mode.

That was it! Thanks!!! I was on 2-button!
I had the same issue on gesture, I disabled/enabled it in home settings and it works.
Did they just break 2-button navigation but leave it in? I've been on it since getting my P3xl 2 years ago, and now I can't get a recent apps screen at all. I swipe up on the home screen and nothing happens. Is there another way to get to that that I'm unaware of?

Oh interesting if I'm on the home screen, not in an app, swiping up get me my recent apps screen.

That is interesting, I am on two button and when I swipe up when in an app I get recents.
How do you change to 2 or 3 button navigation mode? I'm on full gesture mode but don't see a option to switch.

In Settings search for "system navigation".
So after I wrote that comment, my phone froze, and after rebooting it would freeze after like 5 seconds every time. I had to reflash with wiping and since then I can swipe just like before.
Is the chat bubbles only on full gesture mode too?
They never show up for me (on 2 button navigation).
Device Certification
Anyone else seeing this: Google Play Store App (22.0.17-21 [0] [PR] 332555730) is missing Device certification?
