OTG that will charge phone and let me plug in keyboard/mouse at same time? - Galaxy Tab S2 Accessories

I dunno. I have been googling on this one. I nearly bought a few devices, then I read closer and realized that none of them were capable of providing power to the tablet, as well as to the other usb port/ports. Ideally, I am looking for a device that can do that. From what I am reading, it seems impossible. Can anyone confirm?

Does anyone know if this will work with the S2 9.7 in the Samsung Book Cover, or does the cover need to be removed to "dock" it? I'm tempted to get one, but not if it's going to be a pain in the buttocks to use...

Can anyone please confirm that this unit is charging + reading a thumb drive (for example) at the same time with the Tab S2?

SimulCharge USB will do it

Use SimulCharge USB (aka TL-002) from LAVA. They are a Samsung Silver Partner. Samsung Hubs that would do the same are not anymore on a market. Docking stations are quite expensive. SimulCharge USB allows you to access USB devices while charging. It cost around $39.99. You can hook up different peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, HDD, flush drives and not be worry about charging. Plus, it's small in a comparison of docking stations... You can read about at their website lavalink.com. Hope that this is helpful. Cheers

The future of charging through USB

Before to long we might be able to plug our devices into our computer and they will charge!
http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/8/10/new-usb-specification-promises-100w-power/
Thanks for the relay, great find! With these newer devices it really makes sense and heck, why to I need seperate power bricks for my USB hub, speakers, and mouse charging base. Getting to a single USB cable would be ideal down the line. I had just ready recently how Apple has adopted the Thunderbolt cable for something similar (though not as powerful watt wise). It's a good trend. I can't wait to get a desk that doesn't have a rats nest zip-tied under it

Yes, this new spec is 100 watts. Enough to power printers and just about any other USB device.

Its actually about the same if you use one of the following charging/data cables linked below. I have both of them. I use one for my car and one at work. I was actually very impressed by the quality and function of these cables for what I paid. I plug in my tab at work to charge via laptop usb when the battery is below 15% and it charges it to 100% in about 6 hours. If you are looking for an extra cable, I highly recommend the first one.

With everything going greener I'd expect all but some high end systems have plenty to spare from the 300-500 watt PS. Heck, smart PS with the right USB implementations could allow charging with the PC off for these gadgets and even cutting the power to charge off when it senses the devices are charged. It's all spes and who follows them though. Pretty cool even if it works for just a few features.

I doubt you would be able to use this in Laptops. My laptops power supply is 90W, they would have to double the size of the power brick and that would be annoying. But, for desktops, this could be nice with like a 600W PSU.

Sometimes, keyboards work with nothing more than an OTG cable. Unfortunately, a lot of things won't work simply because of the power draw. If I'm not mistaken, the KF's USB OTG out is i only around 3V, quite a bit less than the usual 5+V a normal USB device needs. For something like that, you need a powered hub.
But even with a powered hub, some devices just won't work. I haven't seen anything about your particular keyboard so I couldn't say for sure whether or not it would work. At the very least you should check the power draw to see if it exceeds 3V by very much.
I swear people were saying this keyboard worked.. Hmmm..
Where can I find the power draw?

That may be the case, I'm just telling you what to look out for. I don't use OTG so I'm only going by what I've read. It's possible the ROM has something to do with it, but considering it's Hash's recent release, I doubt it.

Generally speaking, any electrical device should have it printed somewhere on the device itself. In some cases, like the KF, you have to look to the AC adapter for an answer.
Did you by any chance have any luck getting a keyboard to work on the kindle fire? If so, what approach did you use?

Review of the GrayBean Card reader-OTG USB Hub #GB-CR

This is my review of the GrayBean multicard reader-OTG USB Hub Connection kit Model: GB-CR
The Graybean GB-CR is a multicard reader and USB hub which is shipped and sold by Seller1ON1 via Amazon.com. it lists for $13.26 and comes with a Blue mini capacitive pen which for us Note 10.1 users, is not needed. The description on Amazon states that it can be used on the following devices..
Samsung Galaxy tab P7300 / P7310 /P7500 / 7510
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch / 10 inch
and I can attest that it also works for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
Packaging and Design
The device came in a plastic zip locked type of bag along with the mini blue capacitive pen.
Front and back of the package.
When I took the device out of the packaging I was actually surprised to see how small it is. The image on Amazon makes it look much larger. The dimensions of the unit are shown below.
Available ports
The available ports on the device are as follows...
1 SD card
1 TF card
1 MS card
1 M2 card
3 USB 2.0
1 DC Input 5V (3.5 1.35mm, 5V, 2A)
There is also a led light that turns on once you attach the device to the tablet.
Although in Amazon there is an image of the device with a power cord attached to it, (as shown below) the device does not come with any power adapter. (More on this later).
Uses and Testing
First let me state that I do not own any MM, M2, or TF cards, so I did not test those ports.
I inserted the Graybean into the Galaxy Note 10.1 and unlike cables and plugs from Samsung which have the Samsung name on top of the plug, the one from Graybean does not indicate which is the top of the plug. So you have to be careful to make sure that the plug notches are facing upward when pluging in the cable into the Note 10.1 otherwise you may damage the port on the tablet.
I proceeded to test the SD card. I inserted a microsd card into the usual SD card adapter and inserted it into the GrayBean.
Immediately the File Manager opens up and i see UsbDriveA. i select a video off of the sd card and it plays flawlessly and without studder.
I then wanted to try to see if I can use a mouse so i attahed the dongle from my Logitech Wireless Touchpad and it also immediately placed a cursor on the screen.
Considering that it has numerous USB ports, my next test was to see if another SD card can be attached.
As you can see from the image, both UsbDriveA and UsbDriveB show up in the file manager.
At this point I wanted to see if I can use a usb extended cable with the GrayBean.
I inserted the AmazonBasics usb extended cable and I was able to still access the sd card.
I was able to test three sdCards inserted in the GrayBean and all three showed up in the file manager.
A Note on External Power and Devices
As mentioned above, the GrayBean does not come with a power adapter. In the Amazon description it states 3.5mm outside / 1.35mm inside, 5V, 2A power port and locating a power adapter for the GrayBean is not easy. One buyer on Amazon mentioned the Enercell adaptaplug tip 'H" would fit the port, but trying to find the tip as well as the actual cable/adapter has been a bit hard.
I did manage to have bought a while back for my Dell laptop the BiXpower USB Port Power Cable that comes with 3 extra connector tips and which so happens to fit the GrayBean.
I did managed to attach an external usb hard drive and the file manager was able to read it, but the hard drive has to have its own power source and also be formatted to fat32, otherwise it won't be seen by the Note 10.1. since the device itself even plugging in a power source, will not power up anthing attach to it.
Conclusion
Its a very useful device that allows numerous sdcard and usb flash drives to be connected to it. Although I do not see myself carrying it around all the time, it will come useful on my desk. I only wish the manufacturer would have included a power adapter withit as well as make the power aactually power up the device (such as hard drives etc) that are attached to it.
TS
Great review, but I'm unclear on something. With the power source connected to the hub, were you able to charge the Note 10.1? I bought the hub and it's tremendously useful. If I could charge the Note while this was plugged in I would definitely go buy a plug.

My first one fit VERY tight when connecting it to my Note. The seller RMA'd me another and although it still is a bit tight it does not seem like it would damage the port.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. Does this adapter take all 3 sizes of SDHC Cards without the use of SD adapters? Thank you.
EDIT: Answered my own question by reading the reviews on Amazon. It takes SD and MicroSD. No MiniSD. I just ordered one myself at $18 and price just popped back down to $14. Can't win sometimes.
Great review!
I've already ordered one of these as well (as a standard OTG tablet to female USB connector and a few more charging cables) through eBay. I'll give my thoughts when I receive it, but what appealed to me over the official Samsung OTG card reader, is that this one connects via a short cable, rather than attaching the device to the bottom of the tablet itself.
Could u connect an external dvd drive to it and see if it works and plays the dvd or something

+1 please test... mainly b/c i've been lookig at buying this here it would be amazing if it worked out of the box on the note 10.1
I bought my first Graybean Hub/CardReader from the same amazon vendor as noted in the first post here and it was not recognized by my Note 10.1 at all; no LED lights. I returned it and got another one. As least the second one is sporadically trying to connect (as if the connection is not secure). No LED lights and never got any notification in my file manager. The 30 pin connectors are really tight. Looks like I'm taking that one back too and exchange it for a 3rd one. Noting it each time in my Amazon product review.
Also, both of these received from Amazon/Gray Bean did not look new. There are many scratches on the plastic area of the 30 pin connector as well as the main section. Product package is not sealed by design- just ziplock. I would like to know if any of you are having or had the same issues right away or after using it a while. Or can you offer any advice? Thanks so much.

I got mine last week, but haven't been able to get it (or the straight OTG USB adapter I also bought) to work. In both cases, the OTG connector is properly recognized by my Note (the system reports a USB connection when I plug it in). But if I plug anything into the OTG connector (thumb drive, keyboard, mouse, SD card) it mounts and then immediately dismounts and then continually loops mounting and dismounting the plugged in device.
Haven't been able to figure out the problem (may be the ROM I'm running, or the fact I'm running a 800X ROM on a 801X device)?
Your post put me into action. I hadn't tested mine so got it out and it works fine, though it won't show more than one attachment at a time. That's a bit odd. Not going to mess with it right now, though.
What's strange is, when visiting the Graybean website, I cannot find this card reader.. I also noticed that there are no serial numbers attached to the actual product.

The N10 would have to be dipped in platinum and covered in rare gems for me to ever do that. Even then then I'd keep my GNote.
I tried to get hold of such a device on amazon.de, they don't have the item available. Amazon.com has it, but will not ship abroad :crying:
Investigating a little more on various sources, I came back to amazon.de, where I found a lookalike device (USB 2.0 Hub OTG Connection Kit + MS TF SDHC M2 Card Reader Kartenleser Adapter Kabel für samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1) for a reasonable price.
This unit comes with a powercord (which connects to any USB power supply), less pen (which I don't need anyway on the Galaxy Note 10.1) also the Galaxy plug is marked with a line on the upper side, so you don't have to try and break it.
Functionality is as described, alas the Galaxy Note does not recharge on the power from the hub :crying: which is what I had hoped for. Not sure if the thing can be modified to supply power to the Galaxy too. Any suggestions are welcome.
I don't upload photos, as the unit is exactly as on the pics above.
Thanks for the review, which made me aware of that option in the first place. :good:

No, it is not possible at least in its stock configuration with stock rom. I tested this last night with my Xbox360 controller and my koolpad qi charger. As soon as the OTG cable is inserted, wireless charging ceases.
I'm assuming there's a good reason why it functions like this.

Ah ok, thanks for the answer even though it wasn't what i hoped for
I guess it needs a kernel hack to so for, and it disable charging for security reasons since OTG host is also power supply.
Guess Nexus might not be what i'm looking for unless i use some wireless storage solution.

I'm not sure how the SlimPort/HDMI works, but i think the difference is that the phone act as power supply when you use OTG. I looked at the kernel for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Nexus 7 a long time ago, and could see the source switched the power from "pull" to "push" when OTG was connected, and could be possible to hack the kernel, but i never dared to try because of the risk there might be doing so. I'm far from an expert when it comes to stuff like that, so better not to mess around too much
Anyway, i hoped there might have been a chance with wireless charge, since it's different "connector", so maybe the kernel wouldn't turn off charge when OTG connected, but seems like it does.

That would be my guess too, whenever the USB port gives or receives power (or thinks it's doing either), wireless charging is turned off, probably to prevent overvoltage or short circuiting the battery.
Qi charger most likey can't give enough current to the device while it has a USB otg attached.

[Q] MHL to HDMI adapter

Does anybody know of an MHL to HDMI adapter that works with the Galaxy Tab S? I have one for my wife's Galaxy SIII that outputs video but does not charge the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 that I have - it recognizes power but has the little no charging symbol over the battery. Just curious if anyone knows of an adapter that does both, displays video and charges the Tab S?

Hi,
I have the "official" Samsung MHL to HDMI adapter that I bought for my Galaxy S3. This adapter works also with my Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab S.
IIRC, you have to plug things in that order for it to work :
- Power to the MHL adapter
- HDMI to the TV
- HDMI to the MHL adapter
- MHL to the Android device
At least, that's how I'm doing it and it works... HDMI is displayed AND the tab is charged. I tried with the charging adapter that came with the Tab S.
Hope this helps.
BTW, my adapter looks like this one :

I have a Fosmon adapter that does not work. Tried it your suggested way and nothing appears on the screen. You don't need to activate anything on the tab, do you?
I need this for next week. I wonder how fast amazon can get that one you use out to me.

You need to use one specific for Samsung. Their pinout is different and a normal MHL adapter will not work on Samsung hardware.

The adapter I have is the Cirago version but I guess the adapter I have just doesn't pass along enough power to the tablet to actually charge it. It works fine otherwise, as in it outputs to the TV fine, just doesn't charge the tablet. I'm guessing the Samsung version must pass along more power through the adapter to the tablet.
Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Have you ever found fully working adapter/cable? I've tried these two:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LL1LD1C/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ESM3UVC/
and none of them works. First one does mirroring but only at 24Hz refresh rate but does not charge. 2nd one is not working at all, it does not charge Tab S (it does for S3) and no video output but maybe I got defective one.
if Sammy is changing the standard setup for a reason then i would like to know what that is. if its to sell their own stuff for profit then lets see the stuff???
since the Tab Pro release there has been NO updated adapters by Sammy and their website clearly does not show compatibility for most of this stuff past the S3
weird and i like most of you have bought many things to find half work as good enough for now at best

Thanks.

OK, I picked up a Futureshop one
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...spx?path=23867a5729eeb996a686a7ae91419bcben02
and on the packaging it states that it's for Samsung. I'll test it tonight and report back.

No problem. Any chance you could test to see if it streams and charges simultaneously? That seems to be the problem with a lot of these MHL adapters they will play video no problem but often not charge at the same time which makes the battery drain insanely fast.

i am 99.99% sure that we are not going to see what we have all searched the ebay and internet world for unless Sammy makes it and since our device has aged now i doubt.
i spent over $100 extra trying items with no luck

Sorry do you mean no cheap ebay amazon etc adapter will output video and charge at the same time. Only the adapter made by samsung will do this? I seen you with the same problem I had in another thread and am curious to what you have figured out.

i dont think you will find something to fully charge and video out. you will find charge at 1amp but that will just prolong your use but eventually run the battery out and you need to find video out with 2amp charge combined with Tab ability to recognize it which i do not believe you will find.

So right now my adapter shows no sign of it actually doing any charging. Is it possible that it is charging at the 1amp but just not displaying it?
Is the samung adapter the only one that can accept the 1amp charge?
I'll have to search for it. Not sure where it is.
