What is the stock, available storage according to the Settings menu? - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I was hoping current owners of the Pixel C could tell us potential buyers what the actual available storage is with this tablet if you go to storage, in the settings menu. I'm personally interested in the 32 GB model, but it doesn't hurt to get info on both sizes. Thanks so much!

My 64GB model reports 52.88 of user available storage. As for your poll, I'll add my own answer: "No, that's what my 128GB Nexus 6P is for (of which 75GB is filled with music)."

Same here.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Anyone with a 32GB wanna chime in?
Also, does anyone know why it issues SOO much storage? That's more than I was expecting, to be honest. It's a skin-free OS, after all. And there's no cell connectivity.

The usual reasons apply. 64gb is not the full 64gb as all figures are rounded down to zeroes. The zip/tgz file is compressed and expands when unpacked and all the boot and system files are put into place. This all needs a swap file capacity to work within and that to update system apps. My 64gb N6P has a similar available storage on initial boot.

24.22 for 32gb

I never thought much about reserved, needed empty space for those types of operations. But I think of my 2012 N7. 32GB, and 28GB are available. That was one of the perks of a Nexus compared to, say, a Samsung. I just feel like that isn't the case anymore.

Memory question

I picked up the note 8.0 the other day and I'm really enjoying it, but I looked in the storage section in settings and was perplexed. It shows only 9.78GB of total internal storage available. Is everyone getting that little space? My Nexus 7 had something like 13.5GB free, and my Note 10.1 had around 12GB free. I know you lose a bit due to file system format, etc...but over 6GB of 16? That seems messed up.

I saw in another thread in one of these xda Note 8.0 forums about folks mentioning the same thing, so I'm pretty sure it is not just you. Yeah, it is disappointing.
Yup. Samsung are taking massive chunks for system memory these days.

4GB of bloat above and beyond vanilla Android??? In a mobile OS like Android, that's a lot of bloat when you figure the average large app (not including games) is still near or under 25MB. That's about 160 apps at 25MB each!
Anyway, it kind of sucks. If they are going to eat up that much space with sheet they should make it with 24GB of storage so that when they sell a 16GB device it actually has 16GB!!! Ah well...I'm just *****ing now.
Don't have my device on me, but a df might tell how much of the /system partition's actually in use. My memory is that it's only about 60% or so.
parted can probably be used to resize /system but unless it's adjacent to /data, you'll want to take very careful notes before attempting that surgery.
Fortunately, you can use uni-init or term-init.sh to enable init.d scripts and then mount the sdcard as if it were internal storage. Most of my app data is written to my sdcard using that technique.
But we have an sd card slot, my N7 doesn't. Thats a nice addition to have.

Its not just bloat (apps) but OS (ROM) itself takes up more memory once the manufacturers start to add their proprietary "skins" to vanilla Android. Think of the extra features like Multi-Window and Smart Stay. That stuff takes up space, and the stock ROM is pretty huge (over 1 GB, I believe).
Not to mention, Sammy probaby reserves a chunk more on the ROM partition, in case they want to add more features on future updates.
Its very much the same on HTC devices, as well. On my One X, its also got 16 GB of memory, but only 9.93 GB available as storage.

It would be nice if they actually reported the "user accessible storage" amount, like saying "16 GB memory, with 10 GB user accessible". Since saying how much memory the device has, without telling us how much of it is sucked up by the OS, is kinda useless information.
It would have also been nice, if they had offered a 32 GB version in the US.
No companies report true information like that. Just like cars they give you hp at crank, instead of at wheels, where there is around a 20% difference. Same concept here.

Its more like the car company telling you the gas tank holds 16 gallons, when you can in fact only "use" 10 gallons of the gas tank.
I was trying out the demo set of Note 8 the other day at many different shops and were shock to see the the "available storage" on all the Note 8 were about 3.5GB to 3.8GB. I thought that being a demo set, it could be that there were many apps and useless stuff installed by other users. I've tried deleting useless data and uninstalling apps on 1 of them (resetting options were greyed out in settings) and still couldn't go above 4GB. I asked the staff and they confirmed that the "available storage" is that low. My question is whether the Note 8 used for demo were "different" from those that were for sale. It's quite unbelievable that all the Note 8 I saw (about 10 numbers at different shops) having so low storage available. That's one major reason I have not get my set yet.

Looking at the numbers your talking about, it looks like that demo unit had 8GB of internal memory. The units that are available for purchase are 16gb units and have about 10GB of free space on them for apps etc. In addition to this you also have the microSD card slot that allows for extra storage for media files etc but not applications.
If you are willing to root your device, you are able to use external storage for app data as well though. I should be receiving my 16gb wifi note 8.0 this evening (fingers crossed it has been delivered to the store) and will be using a 64gb microSD card in conjuntion with an app called FolderMount in order to use it to transfer application data from the internal storage thus allowing me to install more apps and games.
If your holding out for a 32gb model you may be waiting a while though as the website customer services and samsung store employees told me that they are not aware of a release day for a higher capacity device.
The storage data I talk about is true for the UK, I dont know if it would be the same where you are, but from what I can tell, all note 8.0s are 16gb capaciity at the moment. Hope that helps.

Thanks. I will go back to check with store on whether their demo set were the 8GB or 16GB version. I've googled for the tech spec on Note 8 and all comes with 16GB or 32GB. The nearest match to 8GB will be on a Tab2. Thanks again and I'm from Singapore.
Alright, I have checked with the store assistance and it was confirmed that at hit on display were Wi-Fi only and it's only at 8GB. I'm a happy owner of Note 8 now and it has 8.7GB of available storage.

16 vs. 32 GB and ROMs

Is anyone having trouble deciding on 16 vs 32GB configurations? Mainly because of the difference in RAM, with 16/2GB and 32/3GB.
Is there a difference in ROM building based on these versions? Or will all ROMs work the same on both versions? Do any other phones have the same thing, having different amounts of RAM? Not sure if I need the extra GB, but I'll have to see what ROMs support first...
This is all hardware. How in any way would it affect software? It just lets people who need more space for music (like me) to have more internal storage and 1 gb more of RAM which is also really good for people who want speed. For those who just use their phone once in a while, they can buy the 16 GB 2 GB RAM one. It all depends on preference.
32gb
I would recommend 32 gb as all the media files will be bigger due to the resolution. With LG's software there will only be 10~11gb of space left for the user

I agree with you about the 32GB model but not for media files. They can go on external SD card right? 128GB on top of 16 will still do for media files.

Oh right, the g3 will have an sd slot. I'd still go for the 32gb for apps (making the files install on the ext sd is a hassle and the apps won't run when you take the sd out)
Wanting to push this thread because i have the same question... I want to see some roms on the g3. But there is still no answer if there is a difference between 2gb and 3gb in building roms.
No problem here...32gb all the way.
Why would anyone choose 16/2 when you have the option of more storage and ram...makes zero sense.
Always buy the better option!

3gb version all the way!
What is the model number for the 3gb version and where can one buy it.....?
I'm okay with 16 GB of RAM. It wasn't an issue on my Nexus 4 and it isn't an issue on my Nexus 5 and 7. Besides, with an SD card slot, storage isn't an issue.
However, given the option between 2 GB of RAM and 3 GB, I'd go with 3. Always go with more RAM when you have the option.
Problem is that I am in the UK, so only 16gb coming as far as we know. That means I need to compromise on my storage. It will be a hassle to often move my camera pic and videos to SD card, and Whatsapp doesnt allow it.
I dont know which other data intensive apps will also have issues if i try to move to SD card....bit of a minefield.
Any tips would help ?
Shall I just forget about the 16gb version and get a different phone (I do like the look of this one however) ?
Hi all just want to know how much space left available can be used if i take LG G3 16GB ? Thanks

I would guess 10 to 11 gb of space for the apps and data that cannot be moved to the SD card. For me, this will consist of a few apps (metro newspaper eats loads of space !) , and lots of camera pics and videos (high resolution) and loads of whatsapp pics and videos (whatsapp stuff cannot be moved to sd either)
......that is why i am avoiding getting the 16gb version - LG are such s**theads for not selling the 32gb in the UK...makes me so angry !
I sent an email to LG UK support and as expected, they could only tell me that at present the 32gb is not announced for the UK, nor do they know if it will be or when, blah blah blah !!
I already preordered the 32GB version because
- apps getting bigger like GTA
- Offline Navigation like Navigon need alot of space
- Taking pictures and Videos
at least LG sells the 32GB here. HTC won't sell the 32gb M8 and S5 also not available as 32 GB
perfect would be a G3 with 64 GB internal memory

i guess so. Amazon.com will ship to Germany, so i guess Amazon.de will ship to USA. The only question would be, if the european model has the needed frequencies for the US and all the carriers
what about ROMs?
Is it that same custom ROM can work on both variants? Only difference i see is an extra gig of RAM. But needed a confirmation if anyone knows

[Q] Couple of questions about storage on this device prior to purchase

Hi all,
I've been waiting for a 10inch OLED device for a long long time now so very happy when T800 came out.
I live in UK however and they only offer 16GB internal storage. I've been patient waiting for 32GB version but that's wearing thin now.
Some reviews state you can use external microsd card for apps I thought I ask those that have already bought one.
I don't plan on initially rooting it until I've broken it in for few months.
So my question does this tablet allow you to use external sd for apps and apps data without hassle? I've not really used kitkat but Jelly bean made sdcard use such a pain. I know I can use link2SD etc if I root (do they still work on this tab without issue?)
If I install galaxy on fire and a bards tale my internal storage is already full so this issue is really important.
Thanks
Chris

Ok, went to Samsung's site and looked up the 16GB Titanium "S". They list the model as "SM-T800NTSAXAR". I Have The 32gb Titanium. The model number on the box is "SM-T800NTSEXAR". So SEX is good. Chris, the Samsung included My Folders app can read/write to a micro SD card without rooting. There is also a built in function that allows you to move apps to external storage (micro SD card). Plus when you take pictures and you have micro SD card inserted the Tab S will automatically save the pictures to the external storage except for rapid picture mode which needs the fastest storage possible. I've not tried moving an app to external storage but have seen the picture saving work. The only "stock" limitation with external storage is that read/write privileges are restricted to the My Folders app. Alternate file managers (e.g ES File Manager) can read/copy but not write.

Other than media Its mostly for large game data files. I would not have more than 1 or 2 of these at same time but the available 10GB of internal would not cut it.
Samsung own webshop is awful http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/SM-T805NZWABTU
I almost bought one straight away but notice no where on the spec does it mention the size of the internal memory. Almost criminal.
Thanks for the model number just wish the stores listed half of them samsung themselves certainly don't

Pixel Out of Box Storage

Has it been confirmed anywhere how much out of the box storage we will have with either the 32gb or 128gb Pixels? My 32 gb 6p had 25gb out of box. Im trying to find out of it will be less than 25gb since the Pixel will have the dual partitions for faster/background updates. I did manage to find a screenshot somebody took from the Android Police hands on demo and it shows 29gb available out of box. I will attach the screenshot. Im not sure if that will be same for the retail phones or if these are only demo phones so they might not take up as much space.
So there's 22gb's available, since 8gb of the 30 is already used up.
I got the 'quite dark, XL, 32GB'... I am wondering now if I should have upgraded to the 128 GB. Pictures/Video in the cloud will be great, but I am wondering how much space the VR apps will consume.
I have both 32 and 128 silver on preorder . Trying to figure out if 32 will be enough before cancelling one of them

32GB is pretty lean for a device without an SD card. I don't need the room for pics or music anymore but although I swear this phone won't need rooted, if I DO go there, I'll need room for ROMs & backups.

On my s7 they're around 500mb to 1gb, definitely not small. You'll run out of space quickly.
32gb on devices is not enough nowadays..todays standard is 64gb and up
I'm very worried with my 32gb not being enough. I needed the 5.5 inch screen but I don't know if the storage is more of a factor

I think it's more than enough if you take advantage of the 'Free Unlimited Google Photo's Backup' feature
From what I've heard/seen, it doesn't seem to be much different than the 6P, so hopefully it's the same. I personally don't mind as I still have 14GB free on my 6P. I don't use VR apps or games, so most of the space is for apps, pictures/videos, music.

Total storage on UK model is 29.7Gb minus 5.39Gb for the system so you will have 24.31Gb to play with. I've attached a Screenshot of mine. Xl model BTW if that makes any difference.

Nexus 5X storage

I have had my 16gb nexus 5x for about 3 months now and i was wondering if it was worth getting the 16gb option? i bought my device off amazon and the total cost of the device was $2700TT and the 32gb version was about $3300TT ($100 US more as compared to the 16gb! using my exchange rate ($6TT=$1US)) of course this includes all the shipping and handling to my country (as this device is NOT available in my country, only way to get it was to import it) and due to living in Trinidad...in the Caribbean........ as i did not want to shell out the extra $600 (because i did not have it ) i settled for the 16gb model. It has become apparent... 3 months after that the 32gb option would have been the better choice and i should have saved a bit more as 10gb (yes the 16gb is only 10gb usable) seems rather unusable in my case. I have done research on the device and knowingly bought the 16gb version *facepalm* .
I just want to know, is the 16gb version popular among the community? and do any of you regret your decision of getting the 16gb instead of the 32gb?
I know it's a useless question and all but I'm just curious, I want to know if other people have had similar thoughts as me.
Thanks.
Take advantage of streaming services and Google Photos backup to free up space on local storage. You can also try clearing your storage cache as it tends to build up a lot over time Settings > Storage > cached data then reboot.

I don't know about the popularity in this community but in my hometown, almost every 5X is 16 gbs, as people buy it as a budget phone, they try to cut down the price for the less storage.
I am also kind of regretting this 16 gb phone. The fact that it doesn't has expandable storage, making backups are pain in the ***. I can keep multiple Roms zips in my phone. I can hardly pull any nandroid backup.
On the other hand, if I don't mod my phone, I can live with it. I remember that there is a law (or phenomenon) that whatever the storage size you'll get, your data will always expand and fill it up. Aand I've experienced and witnessed it enough to believe it.
The only solution I've discovered is either using cloud services and cutting down my data. And I was also thinking of getting a usb type c flash drive (as I'm upgrading my laptop too). So I'll get expandable storage on the go and can pull backups on it.
