Dolphin emulation performance? - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was curious if there were anyone using the Pixel C for emulating games. I think dolphin is one of the most resource intensive emulator out right now with good android suppprt
So for those who are using Dolphin, what type of performance levels are you getting with various games?
I'm curious about Mario and Zelda games the most, but I'd like to hear as much feedback as possible.
Also, does disabling encryption help with performance of dolphin emulation or is the bottleneck CPU/GPU?
Thanks in advance!

Ive never even thought of this. I should try it. Thanks

I'd love to hear about your experience with it
Like which games you tried out and what FPS you were getting on them

works ok, about the same as the Shield TV so a frame rate of 48 -60 on double dash

how could you make the on screen control work? i try on my c but all the button group on the left corner

In the main menu you can open a sidebar by pushing on the Dolphin then settings->Input->Input Overlay->Input Overlay Layout
Mariokart runs in Time Trials mode not bad (depands also on the Track) but i think Grand Prix is not playable
edit: sadly there are no updates since 2014. I think with some optimations dolphin could run all games :crying:

hi i'm new user of google pixel c and i run perfectly on dolphin emulator games of gamecube like zelda wind waker and zelda twilight princess but i use the new build of this emulator wich is update often to improve all. The actually dolphin android emulator builds are on this page:
As i can't put you link here type in google search this:
builder release android buildbot dolphin emulator
and click on first link then to download apk of build you need to click on number of build like 930 to obtain build page and click on file in "steps and logfiles" field
like in this case
"dolphin-master-5.0-1605.apk"
for best configuration i can't put link like pictures then if you need i could you tell screen by screen in text here, if you need.
PS: sorry for my bad english i'm french ^^

The most recent consoles you'll be able to emulate are the PS1 and N64. Anything newer there is not an emulator for and I doubt there will be for a long time (and certainly not for the Epic.)

Ps1 ran FF7. That'd be fine. Nintendo & Super Nintendo would also be great.
I use FPse for PS1 roms, there's a program called ECM Tools that will help you convert certain game roms into the file type(s) you need to run the image on Android.
I've put SNESoid on my girlfriends phone, she has been playing Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG and A Link to the Past, all without problems.
Both emulators feature save states, you will need a BIOs file for FPse but all you have to do is google the BIOs file mentioned when first booting up the app.
There are emulators for every system you listed accept for ps2 (a tad bit over board for our hardware ) psx4droid ver 3.0.0.6 is the newest ps emulator and n64droid 1.0..4 is the newest for n64. However all of these were recently pulled from the android market. Their developer yongzh has been giving them away for free since just google for the apk. Make sure you have the latest!

He uses another ps emulator fpse. Personally, final fantasy IX looked a whole lot nice for me on psx4droid with way less pixelation. The secnd part is about the saving system which is independent of the consoles emulated memory cards an takes a snapshot at any point you like which you can load later. Like an old school gameshark.

I use FPse for PS1 roms, there's a program called ECM Tools that will help you convert certain game roms into the file type(s) you need to run the image on Android. -- Google ECM Tools and there'll be a website called Emuparadise, one of the first results. Just check out that page, there's a download link and a brief explanation of what the program does and how to use it (it's as simple as drag-and-drop).
If you download a game image and the files include a .bin or .iso or .img file, those are all good to go without any preparation. (Also wanna mention that the SNES emulator doesn't require anything like this, it's just for PSX games.)
Both emulators feature save states, you will need a BIOs file for FPse but all you have to do is google the BIOs file mentioned when first booting up the app. -- Save states are used as an alternative to the games native save file system. You can save whenever you want and load from that point. The BIOs file for FPse is named SCPH1001.bin, just pop that into Google as well and you'll find it no problem.
Edit: As being mentioned above, psx4droid is an option as well. I had lag issues with a few games while running psx4droid (primarily with the games that came around later in the PSX lifespan) which I havn't had with FPse. There have been a few games where I've noticed graphical faults within FPse, Breath of Fire III had some transparency issues...can't really think of anything else worth mentioning. I had a few roms that didn't work but I've managed to find other versions to try out and have gotten everything to work so far that I've wanted to get working.
I'd try them both out and see which works best for you.

And just let me say that in no way was I dissing fpse. It is most definitely the "faster" of the two.. and has better compatibility overall. But you mentioned final fantasy and I have to mention that I tested ffix on both and px4droid (the newest one, I haven't had much success with anything older than 3.0) just was better for that game. Plus it supports antialiasing which I really notice on this small screen in comparison to a computer monitor. Anyway happy gaming, PM me if you have any emu questions.. btw food for thought- anybody think once we get some quad core action going on in android we might be able to get a pcsx2 port going? That would be sweet.

[PSX Emulator] Best FPse Open-GL Settings

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone uses FPse, the PSX emulator. I just recently purchased it and that damed thing killed my weekend. I was playing Metal Gear Soild the entire weekend trying to get the best performance etc. Looks like 'old software drawing' and Open-GL Blits mode or whatever works the best, but I want to rock Open GL. Once I turn it on, the performance plummets for me. Any suggestions on settings etc?
EDIT: Would a certain BIOS make a difference in performance? I'm using SCPH1002
Thanks,
--Marc
not sure about the bios thing, i have installed 1001. havent tried any games, need to find the psx stash, can't remember where i stored the few i kept to make an iso.
sent from my i9250
downloaded it today cuz i read that it now finally supports skullmonkeys the best damn game i ever played in my life (appart form max payne cuz i really like the stories and the comics in max payne and the vidz in skullmonkeys and what not)
i was stunned how it works, no lag no nothing with a game 627MB big. i use scph1001 as he recommended and thats it. non of the tweeks in video settings do anything cuz the frame rate stays at 59-60 constant and the picture quality stays the same, not perfectly clear but decent.

If you download/install the Open-GL plugin, it looks way better, BUT, I've noticed a huge performance hit during cut scenes etc.
Never heard of Skullmonkeys.
EDIT: Oh crap, did the most recent update and it completely borked for me.. v0.11.46
tried opengl that he offered it was prettty laggy and the video quality was the same as before. tried libopenglplugin.so and it fc's.
sorry bat what is the word "borked" i don't mean it bad but i cant figure it out

Hehe, 'borked' on urban dictionary just means it broke or messed up. How do you get these other plugins? I don't mind running it at the other video modes but I'd like to get the Open GL one working since it looks so awesome!

Use ePSXe! It is much better!
Requires no setup in order to play games smoothly Give it a try
He's asking for settings for opengl graphics, he can run it fine on his normal settings, doesn't need a new emu.

Difference by changing BIOS:
On boot screen text changes - sometimes Trademark logo, sometimes Copyright
Different menu for memory card management.
FPS lock ---
by last number in bios
0 - Japan NTSC --- 60FPS SCPH-1000, ...
1 - USA NTSC --- 60FPS SCPH-1001, SCPH-101, ...
2 - Europe PAL --- 50FPS SCPH-1002, SCPH-7502, ...
best BIOS for using is SCPH-101 - its newest bios from PS One console - much smaller and rounded corners
and also use NTSC-U game ISO
I've always used the 1001 bios for my PS1 emulators. I've used both FPse and ePSXe and FPse is honestly smoother for me. I have never messed with the performance settings and its always ran good. I played through all of Metal Gear Solid on my tablet with no issues.
Side note: I've been playing Final Fantasy 7 lately. I had forgotten how fun that game is.

Console emulators on Shield

I really look forward to test different emus on the Shield: PSX, SNES and GBA. IMHO Shield will be the ultimate retro gaming machine without the need to hack/jailbreak it.
I will want root just to see how much we can push that tegra 4 and sixaxis controller app needs root to work.. since its got HDMI out on it, I can connect it to my TV in my room, sync the PS3 remote and game on!

Because shield is way more powerful than OUYA perhaps?
Shields A15 core vs OUYAs A9 gives a huge boost in performance, the Shield is clocked higher and has way more GPU cores.
Someone will probably root the Shield pretty damn quick, sixaxis probably wont be a problem.

I've been playing around with my roomates shield. It has some weird problems with emulators. For instance, the "Y" button is the menu key in android. So whenever I try to bind it to something in an emulator it opens the "menu" of the app instead. Not sure how to fix it.

For Super GNES, pressing Y doesn't trigger the menu by default.
but upon touching the menu soft button on the screen & pressing Y whilst in the menu, closes the menu.

That's called a "fallback". If the app isn't catching it when you're trying to assign the button, they somehow really messed up the app.
Fallback occurs when an app doesn't handle a button press. For instance, pressing B falls back to BACK if an app doesn't support the B button. Most controller-based apps do, though... :-/
The more I play the more a realize that there seems to be a slight audio delay in basically any emulator I use. The video quality is great, no stuttering or anything, but it seems like the audio is delayed like a fraction of a second on everything. Like in mega man on nes I push jump and he does the complete jump then I hear the sound or if I shoot the gun the sound comes after the bullet is halfway between his weapon and the edge of the screen.
In the SNES emulator I have tried there seems to be delay. I tested that in contra 3 using weapons.
In mupen64 or supern64 there is a delay which I have noticed playing majora's mask. Swing links weapon and he completes the swing before the weapon makes a sound or if you are running and do a roll, he has completed the roll before you hear the sound.
A quick google search returned a few recent results with similar experiences on various android devices. Anyway, it isn't a deal breaker and I hope it gets sorted at some point.

Even on PC emulators, one of their biggest challenges to overcome has been audio lag. Expect this... you're emulating a system.

This is a problem if the emulator is just mapping hardware buttons and doesn't understand controllers. I don't think there's a lot you can do in that case (except maybe hope they update the emulator). All the emulators I have installed work fine.

Snes9x EX+
SuperN64
FPse ( the analog triggers wont map) can any1 find a better one? or Free 1?

There are vast improvements with the latest versions. Only had a quick go last night with Wind Waker, its almost running at full speed now. Here's a nice little video on a channel I follow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iQ6myHHMnU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCJKOKAc0Rs
The fist half on the second link shows how to set it up.
Personally I set the internal resolution to 2x, enable fastmen, Enable Skip EFB access from CPU, and set EFB copy to RAM (cashed). Oh and force 16:9 aspect ratio. I leave everything else as default. That seems to work for most things and gives a good speedup. You'll get a much more details explanation of settings over on the dolphin on android forums obviously, but that should get you off to a decent start.
There has been huge improvement recently. I played through Fire Emblem Path of Radiance in its entirety on the SATV (overclock 0.5) and currently playing through FE: Radiant Dawn (overclock 0.2). For Wii games Super Mario Bros Wii and Muramasa the Demon Blade running full speed for me (and Radiant Dawn with overclock, as above). Game cube games running well include Timesplitters 2, Luigi's Mansion (although there has been aa graphical regression recently and his head is missing) and on 1x IR Mario Kart Double Dash is virtually perfect too (frame rate consistently above 55), as mentioned above Zelda WW approaching full-speed too. Performance in most games is CPU bound, so increasing to 2x IR or so doesn't hit performance in most games, so I was interested to see that Mario Kart did improve with lowering IR (someone reported that in comments in Free Emulators YouTube channel and I checked and it's the same for me also).

Arrr thats interesting, I wondered how people were running Double dash at full speed while I was stick at about 30fps. Over the weekend I played Wind Waker on the sheild, however there is a bug in the Tower of the Gods section where the lifts don't activate http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/1540/t1671502-tower-of-gods-glitch-dolphin I thought it was just me and it wasn't until I gave up and looked at a walk through that I realized it wasn't me I had to transfer back to the PC and play past that section before picking back up on the Sheild. There's something very satisfying about playing on the Sheild TV. I've had dolphin on my PC forever but hardly ever fire it up, probably because of the backlog of steam games lol. Whereas with the sheild in the bedroom its the first thing I head for. Probably because I believe the gamecude games are far better gameplay wise than native android games. I tell you what though I find those Zelda games pretty challenging puzzle wise, I can fly through most modern games but they really do have me scratching my head and I do occasionally have to reach for a walkthrough as much as I hate going so.

Yes is there a list of Sheild TV specific overclock settings somewhere? I saw a thread on the dolphin forums but it said the settings may vary by device. I haven't played around with OC settings myslef yet. Off topic it would be nice to get a custom Kernel for the TV so we could bump up the CPU clock a little

I've yet to play around with any OC settings mate that was #NZtechfreak. I just enable fastmen, Enable Skip EFB access from CPU, and set EFB copy to RAM (cashed).
I'll have a play around with the OC settings later tonight, but I believe setting to 1*IR should give you almost full speed without OC settings.

I'll have a play around with the OC settings later tonight, but I believe setting to 1*IR should give you almost full speed without OC settings.

cant wait till android M is release a month or 2 months from now on this device....also the shield IS perfectly capable of running dolphin at full speed..dolphin just has to be optimized and updated.

Gaming/Emulating games on the 8 Pro, what's possible?

Happy new year all.
Just thinking of flashing a new ROM and was contemplating what could be possible on current hardware.
The last time I ran a test from top to bottom I hit the ceiling at ps2 emulation but that was dodgy
Anyway, I personally haven't used any of the new emulators for a while so wondered what is currently possible? What have you used? What worked? Or was good?
I know in theory 90% of Wii games should work and everything underneath it, so GameCube, PSP, PSX, N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, 32x, jaguar, arcade, mega drive, SNES, Neogeo.
Any info, ideas, cool stuff,
IMO it all depends on the game.
I play NSMB Wii through dolphin and that works great. But as an example, I can't get Rogue Leader on GC to play on anything except a good GPU on a PC. The Hoth level brings everything to it's knee's and OP8P is no exception.
AetherSX2 is great for PS2 emulation and with a few tweaks seems to play everything very well. I tried shadow of the collosus and Black and both were very playable. Check youtube for how to tweak.
But yea, everything below that seems to work great. Dreamcast, PSP, PS1, Mame. I even managed to get Killer Instinct arcade working throuh retroarch and that worked very well.
You can also play packages for Doom 3 and OG Half Life as well as HL2 and Portal with hacky APK's.

What's NSMB?
Shadow of the colossus? If that's working then that's really really impressive, that absolutely pushed the ps2 to the limit, the use of fog to keep graphics in memory was genius for it's time and to manage to keep the frames up on ps2 hardware.
Cheers will have a look at that ps2 emulator, nice one.
PS:. I've got a guide on how to run PC games with native files
One of the things i've been using for gaming has been this app https://parsec.app/
Pop it on a PC you game on then log in, change some settings then leave that PC alone.
On a second device, android / mac / or other windows device, download the app from the link and install it.
Log in and you can then control the PC you installed it on in the first place, i have to say that the speed of input is really really good, i was massively impressed by the responsiveness and ability to play through games with minimal setup required.
Few things to change.
Set resolution to 1920x1080
Change network to latency / performance
Change network allowed to max / 50Mb
Renderer - DX11
That should work as expected.
I played some PS2 games on my Huawei P30 Pro already.
For the nature of emulation, not every game works. But everything below PS2 and below WII U is probably very enjoyable. Most emulators are open source and are ported to android anyway.
I would say God of War from PS2 is playable on the 8 Pro.
