HD-Voice - Sprint LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hello,
Has anyone been able to get the lgg5 to use HD-Voice doing a call to another HD voice supported Sprint mobile?
I have contacted technical support and they have confirmed to me at the lgg5 does indeed support the HD voice so it should work straight out-of-the-box.

Yes, I have been able to and it works very well. I did not have to do anything extra to get it to work.

My works very well also out the box.

Mine works to the wife's iPhone 6S but believe it or not the call quality has been worse when I get a "HD" call connection. Significantly enough that I can tell during the call if it is an "HD" call or not. It has been very muddy sounding and have to call back and try to get a regular call.

How to Surf and Talk on EVO 4G

Hi Guys I'm starting this thread hoping somebody out there knows how to do this or please point me in the right direction. I know it is possible to talk on the EVO and Surf in 3G at the same time. I know this can be done on 4G. The reason why I said it can be done I have a friend that has a Sprint Palm Pre they told me they can do this without being on WiFi. If we can figure this out video Calling will go alot smoother and better by using Knocking Video. If we can pull this off calling the other person on EVO or even the IPhone using Knocking video your voice would be channel through the 1x while the video without voice traveling through 3G and 4G for those who has it is. Now this is how its done overseas out of the USA every phone comes with two camera we are the ones behind. Now I know its a setting in the ##DATA# that has been disable or turned off. My thoughts are that Sprint either turned it off and not allowing this to be done yet "why" to promote 4G. Now Voice and Video consumes alot of data from both Parties Knocking Video do not as of yet have audio so therefore if we can Somehow turn this on calling your party puting them on speaker or Bluetooth video will go alot smoother. AT&T has this option where they can talk and surf but they have Face time only on WiFi. thank you guys for taking time and reading this post hope we can figure this out. I have Faith in you guys. Thanks for your hard work all of you..

edit: not going to happen sorry your friend lied.
Deceptions
I was completely deceived by the Title.
Perhaps you should have edited your Title to say "Can you use Data and Voice at the same time on Sprint?".
Your friend lied.. It can't be done..

Wrong forum. This should be in q&a. But to reiterate, with CDMA this is impossible. The network is not made for this.

Connect to Wifi or 4G. Those are your only options.
Yes you can do this but you have to be on 4G. As the others said, its not a setting you can just tweak. Sprints nor Verizons network support this on 3G.
I used to do it all the time from my Touch Diamond on Sprint - routinely, actually.
I was surprised when I couldn't do it on my Evo 4G, but eh - it wasn't that big of a deal.
your friend with a pre is a liar, I've got a pre sitting on my coffee table that can attest to it if you want
I remember being able to do this on my Mogul thought....
It is not physically possible for any CDMA phone to do this, I have no idea why you would think anything but. Using WiFi or 4G you can, but otherwise you can't.
3G is plenty for video calling anyways, voice/video run about 1Mb/sec according to fring.

nope. It's just like when you get a call or text message, anything you were doing on the net is paused. I would routinely tether to my laptop and stream netflix. A call stops that in its tracks.

Those of you saying you were able to do it with your previous phone... You're not recalling it correctly. It cannot be done. You cannot surf and talk at the same time, with EV-DO, period.
It's impossible and there is absolutely no proof that this was ever possible.
Like other people said, this is a limitation of the EV-DO technology. So unless your windows mobile handset was so slow to the point that it was showing you delayed data during a phone call , it is simply impossible.

Yes but that's one way calling and 3g for sprint is 1.something so it will be choppy. Pocketnow did a test on the iPhone tethering sprint phone with the iPhone face time and it was choppy only At&t stood up to smooth video calling. See we can send text while talking and text is data yes it is data. Before we couldn't send text while talking. And on the pre some phone where able to do this some wasn't due the the update. I'm thinking it was a test sprint was doing. Early or mid last yeah cmda purchase the technology for this to happen Its all a money thing in USA think about it. See sprint charging. Us extra $10 for this phone and future phones. I believe its a setting somewhere on this phone. Because you can turn. Receive text off while on a call and send to voicemail I was thinking somebody out there would know more about the ##data# settings. Than I do please help in anyway

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE! I don't know why you can't understand this. You might have been able to use the browser while on the phone if the page was CACHED, but 100% there is no CDMA phone that can browse and talk at the same time without being on 4G or connected to Wi-Fi.
Also, SMS is NOT data - it goes over the voice network.
To those who have done it previously with Windows Mobile phones, It was because you were connected to ActiveSync sharing your computer's internet connection, not surfing and talking on 3G at the same time. It is impossible, as it is a limitation of the CDMA technology used. Different EV-DO/EV-DV Revisions could have made this possible. However, neither Verizon nor Sprint took advantage.

Agreed with this response 100%. Simultaneous data/voice is a technical limitation of cdma/EV-DO and no amount of software hacks/settings/whatever can change that.

[Q] Does the Galaxy Nexus have native video call support over 3G network?

Does this device have video call over 3G network (not over 3G data, using gtalk, skype, etc.) or this funcionality is still not present in Galaxy Nexus / ICS?
Don't all phones need 3G (or 4G/WiFi) data to make video calls?

Video call = 3G network, not using your 3G data plan.
Skype etc = 3G data.
Which phones allow you to do that?

I thought pretty much every 3G phone has been able to do this since 2004? At least in the UK...?
If you're talking Android, then Samsung phones can.
Also tonnes of other non-Android 3G phones, the technology has been around for around 10 years in the UK now, vaguely remember the huge brick video phones that were first on the 3 network.
Must be a UK / European thing then... I don't think I've heard of that before.. every time I've done a video call its been with either Skype or FaceTime or some other service like that. Never done it over the carrier voice network.. always over 3G Data or WiFi
My Samsung Galaxy S can do these video calls over 3G network, but Nexus S can not. So I was wondering if this could be a new functionality in GN or ICS...
I could do native video call on my HTC Touch Diamond 5 years ago.. or was it 4 years..? Anyway when it came out. And the techniqe has been around alot longer in Sweden..

It's not possible on Verizon, since CDMA2000 EV-DO is data only. It might be possible on AT&T, but I think I read somewhere that AT&T limits its UMTS network for data only, and uses 2G for voice.

I think it is mainly a European concept as when I bought my HTC Kaiser (TyTN II) 4 years ago it had video calling facility via the front facing camera but the American version of the same phone did not have the front facing camera.
Basically its the same as making a voice call but you would select video call from the menu instead. As long as both phones had front facing cameras and supported video calling then you could have a video conversation over the carriers network without using data but the video calls were not part of the inclusive minutes bundle and were ALOT more expensive (around 50p - 75p a minute depending on carrier). Same thing goes for the phone before that (HTC Hermes) but I never once used either phone to make a video call lol.
With the advent of Skype and Google Talk there is really no need for carrier video calls anymore, I have never seen any per minute pricing for video calls in the carriers books for years and think its pretty much dead.
Hope that explains what the OP was asking about.
Mark.

I had the Touch Pro and Diamond 2 (HTC Pure) on US AT&T way back then... and it included Video Calling over cellular. Of course I never used it because no one ever had it back then.
Even today I don't know anyone to video chat with except my gf's netbook over skype.

the Euro version of i9000 and i9000M allowed that
came with build in "face time" per say to allow video chat
my SGS2 phone dialer did not include video chat, seems like they removed the feature
so it's unclear if it's going to be supported by stock ICS
Any update on 3G video call capability?
As the Galaxy Nexus is already on the market in the United Kingdom for a few weeks, and now even in Germany, I wonder, are there any updates on the capabilities of the 3G video call capabilities of the European devices? (That a US-Verizon-Galaxy-Nexus will not have 3G video calls is obvious.)
I know that the Samsung Galaxy S2 in Europe definitely supports native video calls via 3G. But does Galaxy Nexus as well?
I appreciate any helpful response.

Video calls with no internet connection has been in australia for years now also. In regards to the topic question.
It would seem the galaxy nexus comes with no native video dialing free of an internet connection and no app's appear to be available for this option either. I find it to be a big disapointment when it comes to delivering options we have got used to being standard features on mobile phones today. Further more whilst the device seems to run quickly and relativly bug free it is a phone with substandard basic graphics for most of it's menus and general features. I use fring to make video calls and it seems to work fine however it does rely on an internet conection and a fring account $$$ if you wish to make video calls to people who don't have fring installed.

Video calls or a cellular network have pretty much been phased out now due to the advent of internet calling such as skype/google talk/fring/etc/etc. I remember when I had my HTC Tytn2 about 4 years ago it had video calling over cellular network but even if you could find someone else with a similar functioned phone then it was over 5 times the price per minute than an audio call and I never used it once in the 2 years I had the phone. I dont think america have ever had that function in a phone as I dont think their networks ever supported it and no british network that I know of (maybe 3 network) has video calls listed in their charges. Cant comment about Australia but its a pretty dead technology now and I cant see it making a return in England at least.

Rogers here in Canada had that but they gouged the FK out of it. So it never caught on. I know it's very popular in Hong Kong from what I've seen in the movies
Its been available for years. I remember it was in my Nokia 6680 (2005).
However this feature has to be supported by the carrier. Being on a 3G network doesn't necessarily mean you can make video calls. I remember trying that on my 6680 in 2005 and on my Vibrant (ported I9000 ROM) and of course got an error.

AFAIK, none of the US carriers ever bothered to support UMTS video calls, not even the old AT&T. Cingular had a video messaging service on a few phones, but it just used data. It was pretty much MMS with a larger maximum message size and a proprietary application on the phone. Their UMTS network was teensy at the time, so it made more sense to do something that could work with EDGE and GPRS.
From a US-centric perspective, it doesn't make much sense to spend engineering effort on the feature.

[Q] LTE reverting back to 4G while on a call?

I finally got 4G LTE on my block. I am getting great speeds. The only problem is , when I am in a call it reverts back to 4G. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I am rooted, running Darthstalker S4 V2. I called T Mobile today to put in a ticket. They said it's the first time they hear of this, and it should not be happening. Maybe between us all here in the community we can pinpoint the problem. Curious to hear from you all.
I am pretty sure this is normal behavior. I am not sure why, but that is what my phone has done since day one (the indicator anyway, I haven't tested actual speeds). The HD calling works, so I assume it's still LTE.

I beleive LTE is only for data. Like on the S3 it would show H while on data then 3G when not using data.

Speeds were good enough for me while on a call I haven't really noticed if there was a decrease. As far as the HD calling is concerned, there is no indicator, but the sound quality is vastly superior (the first time you experience it, you will understand). Both phones need to have hd voice capability and be in LTE coverage. My understanding was that it requires either bandwidth or something else the LTE towers provide. I don't even think it works with wifi calling...

I guess I have a reason to make my wife get a new phone now!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/fingers-crossed.gif
As far as data speeds while on a call they do greatly suffer. Here is a speed test while on a call. If both phones have to be on LTE to experience HD calling doesn't that mean we have to stay on LTE while in a call? As you can see in the screen shot, signal reverts back to 4G. Now I'm back to square one.
Here is your answer: "4G LTE does not carry voice services, so calls will fall back to our HSPA+ network until voice over LTE (VoLTE) software is ready." (Click here for their support page.)
There is nothing wrong with your phone, this is just the way it works currently. I am not sure about the HD voice since that theoretically requires LTE...

I think this pretty much sums it up.
While the industry has seemingly standardized on VoLTE for the future, the demand for voice calls today has led LTE carriers to introduce CSFB as a stopgap measure. When placing or receiving a voice call, LTE handsets will fall back to old 2G or 3G networks for the duration of the call.
I found the info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_(telecommunication)

AT&T's VoLTE/WiFi Calling or T-Mobile's EVS on Pixel XL?

For those who are on AT&T and got their Pixel XL, are you seeing VoLTE and can you enable WiFi Calling?
For those who use T-Mobile, we know it supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling on Nexus, so Pixel will likely follow. The important question is whether it supports EVS (Enhanced Voice Service). I don't know how you would verify. An "HD" symbol during a call would be a good start.

I believe Tmobile and Verizon confirmed the google versions will be fully supported with HD, WiFi and VoLTE.
AT&T, that i know of, has never supported their advanced services on any phone that is not their brand. I know a lot of people with the P6 couldnt get wifi, VoLTe or HD voice. Verizon or Tmobile would be the two choices if you want to use the advanced features.

I agree with the state of support for T-Mo and VZ.
AT&T in fact supports non-branded iPhone 6, iPhone 7/+, HTC A9 and A10. The irony is that the ATT-branded Nexus 6 do not get VoLTE because, so I've read, Google would not bake in AT&T's proprietary VoLTE implementation. It is true that the 6P/5X do not get ATT VoLTE, but I am curious to know if things changed with the Pixel. If HTC can do it, then it is a business decision for Google/ATT.
For T-Mo, I would like to find a way to see if EVS is in use during the call. The chipset in use certainly can support it.

If your call was truly using VoLTE, you'd know for sure. My wife has an iPhone 6 plus, and when I got my Note 7, the call clarity is AMAZING on VoLTE. It sounds more like you are Skyping someone on a high-quality connection. Now that I'm looking for something to replace the Note 7, I really like the Pixel XL, but losing VoLTE on AT&T is a BIG drawback for me.
If AT&T does get around to allowing VoLTE on the Pixel, I'll order one today!
The verizon version is working out of the box on T-mo with Volte. No APN editing needed for those who maybe wondering.

If your 5X on AT&T stays on LTE during every call, run a speed test to verify. Note: Tmo DOES support VoLTE on non-branded phones, including the 5X.

VoLTE does not necessitate the wide band conversation you experienced. What you experienced was HD Voice, which is only implemented over VoLTE. Because the N7 and iP6 both support HD Voice, the conversation in HD Voice. Both parties have to support HD Voice and be on ATT (same for VZ). If you call someone outside of ATT, you will still get VoLTE, but not HD Voice.

Not entirely true. My buddy has VZ, and we had an HD Voice call between my Note 7 in Indy and his S7 Edge in Houston. Apparently AT&T and Verizon are now offering inter-carrier HD voice "in limited markets."
Once you experience it, you won't want to go back.

You're right, ATT/VZ are working on HDV interoperation. I haven't seen it here in L.A., but it would be nice when it works across carriers. It is matter of time... The same goes for ATT and VoLTE on non-branded phones, we just don't know how long they will hold out.
Just tested: No VoLTE on AT&T. Draw your own conclusions about AT&T.
As expected, Pixel XL on T-Mobile has VoLTE and WiFi Calling. I made a call to another T-Mo phone (Samsung) and it showed HD on both ends. I know the Samsung phone is using EVS, but wish I can tell if the Pixel XL is using EVS or AMR:WB.
ATT Support Wifi Calling and Volte for Google Pixel.
I would suggest for everyone who has att and the google pixel just call technical support and open a case.
After my call they said that they fully support wifi calling and volte on the google pixel.
They are currently working to correct this. Maybe if everyone starts calling it will add someone urgency .

I had to call them anyway for something. Will do this while I'm on the phone with them. Thanks!
I just called today and one lady told me that they do support the Pixel so she transferred me to another support specialist and then that lady told me that the Pixel is not supported. These people need to get their **** together.

Tmo Volte and HD voice calling work right out of the box. I would however recommend configuring your APN to the recommended one from Tmo. Internet access is the same but it seems MMS configuration is handled a little differently. I was having allot of issues with MMS not sending or taking forever. It's almost instant now
+1 to no HD Voice on ATT. As soon as I put my ATT sim into my old 6p I lost HD voice (Had a note 4 before it, That DID have HD voice). At the time I also did not have VoLTE (Phone would fall off LTE when on a call). At the time, They claimed no non-ATT phone would support VoLTE and HD calling. I've verified since then and have found the same to be turn currently. Including with my Pixel XL.

You're right, ATT/VZ are working on HDV interoperation. I haven't seen it here in L.A., but it would be nice when it works across carriers. It is matter of time... The same goes for ATT and VoLTE on non-branded phones, we just don't know how long they will hold out.

Yes, At least here in Central Florida. I've got a VZW Pixel XL. My mother has an iPhone 6 on ATT. Every call she makes to me is AMR:WD (HD). However any call I make to her is standard AMR. I've spoken to about a dozen VZW engineer's who all claim it's coming. And for now, They're only allowing AMR:WB setup on inbound calls, But not allowing it on outbound call setup.
Although Pixel gets VoLTE on T-Mobile, disappointingly, there is no EVS/HDV.

Call aound quality betweeen two S9 on T-MOBILE

Hello everybody,
I have huge issue with sound quality on call between two S9 on T-Mobile. The sound looks electronic and rattles at high frequencies. If I call to any other phones (landline, Applie 6s+, S7) then sound is great.

was wifi or volte on?
I try to turn off those on my G6 and previous phones as it always sounded electronic and tinny.
Talking to my husband on his G6 sounds like a maraca shaking before each sound or word he says. Both of us are on T-Mobile. Talking to an iPhone 7 has no distortion. When I searched I found that the s7 had a lot of issues similar and some people said if the speaker rattles when shaking the phone then it is faulty, which mine does. Any idea?

On mine I always choose prefer wireless network so it only relies on wifi when out of range. It shouldn't have been using wifi for either call.
Wifi calling is off but VoLTE can't be turned off since Samsung S8. Also I found that at time of call to another S9 I have HD+ icon but on call to Apple just HD. I guess that HD+ use new voice codec and S9 have some quality issues with them. Some Note 8 thread indicate that it have Phone HD settings to disable HD calling but I can't run it on S9.
My wife has the EXACT same issue when talking to me! I have the S9+ and she has the S9. We're both on T-Mobile, and It's only on her end, only taking to me. I have not a single issue with calls so far and she has no problems when calling a landline phone, it's only T-Mobile to T-Mobile when calling me. So weird...any chance its the 600 Mhz the S9 now supports? Any ideas on how to fix?
There is definitely a issue calling from S9 to S9 phone on
T-mobile.. My Mom, Brother, Sister, and myself all got the S9 Plus and the call quality is absolutely horrible, a ton of feedback and distortion when calling amongst ourselves...
Hope they figure this out asap...
Wife and I just joined T-Mobile yesterday to take advantage of the BOGO on the S9. I got the S9+ and she got the S9- calls to each other sound like a tin can on a string. I use Google voice for work, and the call on that was awesome. I'm about 99% sure the quality issue is with the HD+.. I remember running into this issue in the past on a different phone and once I deactivated that setting it sounded great.
This is still an issue for me. Did anybody solve?
Its still a issue, I can't see how this is not being widespread talked about with T mobile users.. everyone that I know that has a S9 that calls each other has this issue..
Yeah, I know the s9 has a lot of call issues in other countries that they are working on patches but unsure if tmobile will.
Any resolution?
I assume no one has this issue resolved with the S9 / T-Mobile hissing sound?
I just switched to Tmobile and now wish I knew about this issue prior. I'm even thinking of going back to iOS. ?
I've even been to their store and no one seems to know anything.

Nope, still an issue. And now it's an issue between Note9 and S9 users as well, not just S9-to-S9.
Hate to say it, since I'm a long-time Android and T-Mobile user, but if you're going to be making a lot of regular voice calls to Note9 or S9 users, you may either want to switch carriers or just get a different phone.
There is no option to disable HD+ voice, and the only workaround is to switch your network from LTE/3G/2G to 3G/2G, which of course is unacceptable given the reduction in data speeds.
