Community development strength - LG G5 Real Life Review

You're a power user. Can the LG G5 keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the LG G5. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

3/10
All Kernels and Roms are pointless.
Root is being with held by those who have found a way to bypass boot lock & 2 part boot.
So, poor overall experience.
Honestly miss my S5 because the subforum was much friendly and helpful

It May Improve
I voted 3 for this because of the current root situation. If root is attained, this will go up.

LG has officially opened up the bootloader for the European G5 H850 variant.
That's root and TWRP without any hacks needed!
More info here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/official-european-lg-g5-h850-bootloader-t3363040
Plus the T-Mobile G5 H830 has been spotted with root and TWRP as well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zlieyd9CP7Q
Other variants may never get unlocked but that's promising for at least two G5 variants.
It's your choice to buy a bootloader locked device or not!

I agree with @autoprime.
And personally, I'm sick and tired of people begging. Especially those with less than 10 posts, are brand new users to XDA, and who have not contributed anything to the Android community ever. The Devs are NOT obligated by any means to share what they have achieved. If any of you bought this device simply because you wanted root, instead of buying the phone for its functionality, form, etc., then you are a fool. BE PATIENT! If it happens, it happens. Don't expect anything.
Rated 5 stars, because I got the phone for the phone, not for root. And I think it's a great device!

Huh. I remember seeing lots of excited, puppylike requests for root development, but often with offers to contribute financially. I agree though that begging, esp. from junior members, isn't helpful.

5 Stars all the way baby!!!!
This phone is great. No lag, no hassles....... I only have experienced 1 issue but I'm sure its a simple bug. The LG Keyboard crashes but reboots itself .
I believe that this phone is so great that all we have to do is be patient and we will be able to have root and unlock Bootloader along with great kernels ROMs and all the trimmings. It's only a matter of time.

i threw a 4.. wanted to throw a 2 actually.
i think there is some work to do in order to get internal storage decryption working in twrp.
hopefully some day we find a way to unlock this device without touching the fuse. to me it looks like its a bad idea to unlock my g5 for now.
i wonder if we should wait with installing updates untill someone comes up with some brilliant reverse engineering skills.
i wonder if such people would even care about the g5.
to me this is a pretty decent phone. i'm happy with its performance so far.
unless we are enforced to wait for upcoming android versions for more than 4 months after nexus devices got it i'll most likely keep it untouched.
i miss certain apps though.. titanium backup, xposed, … great stuff. at least i could manually type the secrets from my previous google authenticator backup in.
you can simply open the sqlite db from /data and grab the plain text secrets ouf of there.

Voted 2. The development SHOULD NOT focus only on the European (H850) variant. That is just completely UNFAIR. I have the Asian (H860N - dual sim) variant and devs and LG as well should give love to all G5 users with different variants.

It started off with lots of enthusiasm and the Team CodeFire YouTube video with TWRP definitely inspired confidence, but things are cooling down now unfortunately. I'll say a 3/5 because we know that TWRP and root CAN be obtained. But every week that passes with everything quiet makes the phone a less and less inviting development target.

Storage issues with app obb movement. Lg has blocked marshmallow adaptive storage like samsung. Not good move

Its the manufacturer who is limited the storage cant understand why anyways this issue is a bad move hope the htc is a better move going that way already as i am a poweruser and need all the storage i cam get.

My note 3 is far more efficient to my needs than any flagship device due to the fact I have total control of what goes on in my device. I currently have the LG G5 as a paper weight. In my opinion all smartphones need root access. Who wants a new computer without admin rights. Its ridiculous already. Don't let these big companies like verizon make you feel like this is how its suppose to be. So far they are winning the in terms of control, like Apple. This will be more common as times passes. Its up to the code breakers to bring the balance back to the force. Who wants a device where uncle sam can track your every move eventually. Root must be obtained not for the individual, but for the sake of digital freedom. Its more serious than people tend to realize!

First of all, I haven't tried it.. I save my photos on a 128GB card and 32GB is enough for my apps.
Anyway, if you are rooted (European):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/enable-adoptable-storage-t3368207
If you are not rooted, I heard that this method works for G5 too but verify before!

Been using it for a few days.
Some notes:
Battery seems to be discharging faster (maybe something with some of my apps being moved to the SD Card?)
Apps cannot be migrated - around 70% it fails
Formatting the card back to portable storage WILL NOT move the apps back to internal first!
Other than these, I found no problems. LG must have started modding the adoptable storage system, and then decided to scrap it - it work completely differently on e.g. CM13.

Good to hear you are still around dude, this forum can't afford to lose mod's like you.
On another note, I am really hoping ppl start to calm down in the development forums. I have never witnessed anything like this on XDA before. Constant sniping is a pure waste of everybody's time and does nothing for development or enjoyment of this site. I would be interested to hear if anyone has some "positive" ideas on how to improve the situation?

GUYS. I'm getting an S3 in a couple of weeks!!!! so pumped.
I'm coming from an Optimus V. Development on that phone is FANTASTIC, but I have terrible service in my hometown, and let's face it: this phone is 29395x better.
I've never really used xda much, because androidcentral is good for the OV. I checked out the ac forum for the s3, and it's awful in comparison. So I thought...I'd better get over to xda
I have a few very random questions...
I hope it's okay that I post them here...
1. What are flamers and trolls?? lol.
2. I saw a video on how to easily root the Att Galaxy S3. Seemed simple enough. However, what is this talk of 'tripping a flash counter'?? is it okay to trip the flash counter, and can I reset that later if I wanna go back to stock??
3. I guess cwm is probably the best(favorited) recovery to use??
Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions

1. people who are rude and ignorant.
2. Use the no trip root method and everything should be fine. Tripping a flash counter is a way for att/samsung to know that you messed with your phone, it can be a problem for warranty returns, but there is an app called triangle away that should reset this. I havent tried it so I personaly cannot confirm.
3. there was a little bit of argument on which recovery was better when there was the missing imei problem, now that it is solved it doesn't really matter (all personal preference). But please don't forget to do a NV backup or at least a backup of your Imei no.
and by the way welcome to xda it is a great place for information and if you do searches first and post in the propper section the people here are great.

One thing that depressed me, in which was easily resolved, was the ringtones, notifications and alarms. They honestly suck, you could at least give me one business class ringtone (a classic phone maybe). So anyways a quick search of the android market and I am overly satisfied again.

Yes I must agree with you there, the ringtone selection wasn't what I had hoped for. Luckily they're apps which help resolve this issue

Perfect place to post, good to see someone else joining myself and Archangel in this chat thread. Here are my answers to your questions:
1. Troll - Someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
Flaming - Hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity.
2. If you trip the flash counter and take your phone in for warranty work, Samsung will know you have flashed unsigned firmware on your phone and may deny your warranty claim. There is a working method in place to reset your trip counter back to zero but it costs a few bucks. If you root and install a custom recovery (cwm or twrp) using this method, then flash all roms using that recovery, you will not trip the counter.
3. This is up for debate, so here are the facts. CWM is the recommended recovery for most custom roms and many developers will not provide support if you flash using another recovery. On the other side of the coin, a number of people have lost their imei flashing roms (phone cannot connect to cellular network), and a theory exists that cwm may be the culprit as no one using any other recovery has experienced this loss. I personally use twrp, a touch based recovery alternative to cwm, works well and gives me comfort on the imei issue.
One more item: If you are planning to flash custom roms, make sure to backup your imei using this method. Restoring these backups has been proven to fix the issue.

Thank you so much for your answers!!!!
1. Ahh. We had some of those on the V ac forum.
2. Ohhhh. Well I'm hoping I'll never have to take it in for warranty work, but that's a nice fix!
3. I see. and twrp has no downsides, other than not being officially supported? Does it still flash any rom?? How is the compatibility of backups between the two recoveries?
On the V, I switched firmwares quite a bit with the Optimus S, so I know the importance of knowing all my cell info(nv backup, spc(msl), aaa key, ha key, etc.) Thanks so much for the link on how to backup all of this stuff, I'm sure it's different than the V haha.

But im still going to get it over the one x even though i love sense and htc are the only droids i had i wanna try something new.

You can only really see the pentile pattern if you actively look for it. It was far worse on my old Captivate because the resolution was much lower; on the S3... i haven't noticed it casually, but if I get up real close and examine the diff between red/green/blue diagonal lines, I can still see the crosshatch diff in red and blue (green is solid).
Much ado over nothing. Samsung said they returned to pentile for the S3 (vs nonpentile in the S2) because the screen lasts longer. I'm fine with that.
EDIT: And because this is OFF-TOPIC, let me just add........ Marklar marklar marklar?! Marklar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that stuff is crazy!!! Those guys are all SO smart. wonder if any of them hang out on the forums.
Where do you guys get authoritative information about Android flashing/modding/development? Like, where does a developer go?
I've read about 10 explanations of deodexing and, while I totally get the "concept," I have lots of little questions questions (are new apps also de-odexed? how can only the first boot slow? someone said they d/l'd regular files and de-odexed himself?!). All the guides explain it simplistically. Where can I find the nitty-gritty and technical explanations of these things? Some super-guide? I don't mind reading 100 pages, as long as it's thorough and authoritative.
I used to mod Sony Ericssons and, while a little difficult, there was one flashing tool, maybe 5 skins for your media player, three or four I-know-what-I'm-doing developers, and we "rooted" using a brute-force method that took sometimes 15 hours. And there was no nitty gritty, really, because, if you could edit an XML file, you were close to the end of our knowledge, haha.

NexusMod for the Galaxy Note II

Hey dudes, it's Bry from the AT&T Galaxy S III and Skyrocket threads, I'm the lone wolf developer of the NexusMod series of ROMS. I currently have a Galaxy S III, but I've been extremely envious of the quad-core 5.5 inch beast of a phone that goes by the name, Samsung Galaxy Note II. I've been wanting to get my hands dirty on some new material to work on, so i thought about it, and decided i'm going take the leap to the Note 2 pretty soon. I mean, why not?
Basically what NexusMod is, for people that aren't familiar with it, is a modified stock TouchWiz ROM made to look as AOSP as possible, giving it that AOSP look and feel, while keeping all of those useful Samsung TouchWiz additions completely intact. *cough cough S-Pen* Here are Some examples of my previous work.
(Edited)
I've already got my feet in the water, and i'm working on a build for the i317 i plan to release to a private tester as we speak. I don't have a n2 yet, but if i sell my s3 i'd get at most $500 from it (I got it replaced, it's in mint condition with a lot of accessories), and i'm give or take $200 short of the $700 the n2 would cost me including the tax. Once i get those $200 i'll get the device and that will sure make it easier and faster to bring NexusMod to this device. :good:
Just to clear some stuff up, Donations aren't necessary. I'm still going to build the ROM regardless, being a student it's just going to take a while longer to save up and buy it myself, probably by the end of the year. I was just putting this out there as a fair warning to prepare your body.

I get your reasoning, i don't NEED the device i'm just not satisfied enough with my s3 which i haven't had long to the point where i don't feel the desire to develop for it and want to move on from it. I have to say, I'm generally opposed to people who outright ask for "donations" in exchange for development work. To me, it sounds too much like "pay me to develop for this device."
I realize that you've stated that you'll develop for it even if you don't get donations, but it still makes me uncomfortable when someone actively asks for a donation.
If you aren't selling your development services, I wonder what will happen if you end up profiting from the eventual sale of the note2. Will you split up the excess money and give it back to the people who helped you buy the phone? If so, it might help to make people feel more comfortable about this.
I'm not in any way trying to start any type of argument here. In fact, I'm trying to head one off by asking the hard questions and getting it settled early.
Take care

That's not fair to people. The poll asks if someone is interested. If they aren't, why wouldn't they vote "no"? I'll freely admit that I voted "no" as I'm not interested. I'm not interested in any custom firmware right now other than the changes I've made myself. That's not a negative review or negative feedback. It's an honest answer to an honest question.

I tried with supersu, with recovery zip file, but nothing solved.
I reinstalled (dirt way too) 20170114 and root is here again.

If you build the rom it's simple you have to add export WITH_SU=true to your envsetup.sh
I'd love to, but I don't know how to

Relax, it's there (sort of)
** "Root will be a downloadable zip based install similar to gapps installation (only need to flash it once)." **
The zip root package will probably be up shortly after all the initial builds get loaded.
If folks were willing to wait a month for the ROM, waiting a day or two more to root it doesn't seem unreasonable. Besides, if you are using things such as Google Pay, first, via con Dios, and second, it usually won't work on a rooted device anyway. About the only thing I would REALLY miss with an un-rooted Lineage OS build would be the use of Titanium Backup, but since it takes about 3 minutes for TWRP to do a Nandroid of the whole thing it is a tradeoff that I for one would be willing to live with.

not on my s3. lol.
OK, maybe not THREE minutes
Sal82,
Well, OK. Four? Five? Even my most loaded device takes not much more than five. Guess I'm a lightweight user after all. In the worst case I'll start the backup before going to sleep. Surely it would be done in time for breakfast. :cyclops:
(laughter is always better when it is shared)
I am just amazed at the number of folks seemingly lining up to say "build for me" as opposed to those asking how they can contribute, as well as the folks bristling at the notion that the builds will not be delivered with the features they want. Poor babies. Life is tough, and them that wants for free have a certain level of audacity in thinking they can dictate terms to a very hard working group of people who are busting their butts to get this thing moving, and not charging a red cent for all of their hard work. The malcontents could always just download the not yet built source versions, add the root capability - there ARE instructions after all - build the ROM from scratch and have what they want. Personally, I'm not THAT good at doing certain things yet, so I am willing to wait patiently and offer what services I CAN perform to support the effort. The old CM builds rescued two devices for me - one from pretty much dead brick useless and the other from a vendor who thought all my private data should go to a server in China without my consent, so I'm just plain appreciative :good:

more like 15-20 minutes. but i'm not complaining. i have an abundance of patience. you have to be patient when dealing with older devices.
and i also agree with you. your wife/girlfriend won't cheat on you(with me ) if you need to flash another zip to gain root access.
i'm PATIENTLY waiting for the zip file.
We can root with phhs superuser

Flash magisk v10.2
This root business was handled badly... users are upset, other developers are upset. I am not going to give my analysis unless specifically asked.
However, I have a few questions regarding this, and I hope someone can kindly answer them.
So, I am on d2att (Samsung Galaxy S3 - ATT) with LOS 14.1 and gapps
I flashed experimental build, rebooted, then, flashed the only LOS build for my device so far. I lost root.
I flashed supersu from here: https://download.chainfire.eu/1021/SuperSU/SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip. Of course, it did not work. I uninstalled it.
There is some whoha about Chainfire selling SuperSu to CCMT: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/54xdmp/ccmt_who_exactly_are_the_owners_of_supersu/ So, now I could have untrustworthy files/access to my device, right? What do I do now -- Wipe clean and use ODIN to flash a clean ROM?
And that ROM would be to either go back to CM13 (last release) or build my own LOS ROM (with SU), right?
Now, I am hunting for root access (I don't know enough) Phh's SU on f-droid, Okay... what do I need to do? Some one posted instructions on reddit not to delete dalvik-cache after installing Phh's SU or do other things as they are risky... at this point, I don't know enough and not sure where to look. All in all, as I said before, root business was handled badly!

I am not getting how this was "handled badly". You have to flash an extra zip file ONCE.
Must have missed the memos
Handled badly? PUH...leeze.
I have lost track of the number of: "this is done totally at your own risk" notifications that appear on this web site.
ALL of the root-related issues have been SO CLEARLY SPELLED OUT on the Lineage web site that even a total klutz like me figured it out.
Perhaps some folks feel the Lineage builds aren't worth what they are paying for them? No, that won't make sense, either.
Of course, we can always ASSUME someone made a complete Nandroid backup of their device before flashing the new ROM so that they can return to their previous configuration within minutes of deciding there was anything about the new ROM they didn't like, right ??
And since the first Lineage builds are pretty much the last CM builds with not much more than the logo stuff re-done, I am going to have to think for quite a while about the definition of "badly." Way too many people are expending a whole lot of effort at no expense to any of us to make this happen. GRATITUDE seems like a more appropriate response.
I must have missed the memos.
Root binaries are up...

@jhedfors
flashing once... yes, thank you!
handled badly... besides the order in which rootless ROMs came out and root-zip came out, there was still a bit of chatter on their Gerrit from other developers, not necessarily back and forth but explanations into the big root change. Developers had to find work-arounds and adapt. For users, granted, they said build your own with SU, which I not up to yet, or wait for root/zip,... there are all levels of users and developers!
It is only a few days, but if they were still deciding... 1 week 2 weeks! I do understand the reasoning for why and agree with you, but they could have communicated this "big change" a little more so everyone involved would would have been better prepared!
@nezlek
missed the memo... LOL
but, memoS... is it metioned more than once... where?
so clearly spelled out... I totally disagree!
klutz... me I guess I am the king of klutz, with no one greater!
paying for them...? Perhaps the choice should have been clearer, so users know what they are "buying"... then they have a choice... stay on CM (with December security update) build your own or even do nothing.
Nandroid... yes, thank you... that would have done it. I am getting more organized with different tools... Appeater, bulk install and whatever else! I am definitely motivated to try building now!
Yes, LOS not much more than CM builds than a redone logo... AND ROOT REMOVED! See caps effect... highlight, stupid flashing things... rootless ROM paragraph (or a whole post) in itself, ROM file names with --noroot.zip would have all help. This is a big change; publicity would have been good. A post on its own, a better, sequence of events, etc. would have helped. For a definition of badly, see my response to @jhedfors above!
Grateful... I am! Having done some work myself, I know it takes a lot more than what I am capable of. Spoilt is more like it... never had to worry about root or look elsewhere or at other solutions!
At the end, as you say "...at your own risk" - no one made me do it, and my over sight is my FAULT!
@alexiuss
Again, thanks
In descending order of importance
First, (seriously) glad you finally got everything under control. That IS, after all, why we all are here.
Second, ditto on the Nandroid thing. My personal attempts at development often result in "damned glad I had this" far too often for someone with more expertise than yours truly. I barely turn a device on any more without a reasonably current TWRP based backup of the whole thing. Clearly it is the reason God made SD cards, in my humble opinion.
Your observation about being perhaps somewhat "spoiled" is well made. We all have been spoiled to a very large extent. Cyanogen was a well funded operation from the get go and managed to burn through MILLIONS in venture capital backing from all accounts. Frankly, I am not sure how they shall survive going forward since I think their new business model is inherently flawed, but "esta no mi problem, amigo."
Lineage is certainly at this moment a different type of operation. SOMEONE is eventually going to be paying the bills, and it might have made - in perfect hindsight - sense to hold back all of the releases until they were all completely ready to go, but I suspect the approval rating for the "as they are ready" mode is pretty high.
Folks need to sit back and enjoy the eventual ride. Especially those of us - SELF INCLUDED - who are fortunate enough to either have or will be able to soon expect our builds to be loaded up.
There's an old piece of Polish folk wisdom that applies pretty well in this case: "it will all heal by the wedding day."
Peace.
Me too... glad things are under control... as I know what I am doing I was being naive hoping that small bugs for my device got fixed so soon... again like you said... backup
Nandroid... I was using onandroid with nandroid manager, then, stopped as I went from CM 12 to 13 to 14 without problems. Did not even have to consider wiping anything (really spoilt or taking risks)! I need to look at the updated files/apps and TWRP based backup... always a good idea to have a backup especially if I/you are going to touch something that is a daily driver.
Cyanogenmod was going fine (I guess) before CM Inc. But, yes, I agree about sustainability and their business plan. Donations out of the goodness of the hearts of some people is helping for now.
If things go bad (some devices loose support) then hopefully there is someone who mods and builds for self and provides the file to others. Or, we'll be at the mercy of OEMs. Honesty, google devices might start looking good from "getting updates often" perspective. Or, stick to the legacy devices and hope nothing bad happens.
Yes, they could have held back all releases or at least until the root files were available. I agree... I am sure they wanted to push at least something "out the door" as soon as they could.
LOS is a different operation, yes... from when CM was under CM Inc. and although they returned to their roots, perhaps will be different from before... who knows! It is good to be cautious and ready, just in further shake ups happen... no guarantee of anything! Good to keep our head up!

The root zip when flashed on my OnePlus 3 only works with a couple apps like TitaniumBackup. Busybox doesn't recognize root, nor does Magisk.
sent from my Glade Air Freshener
So, this is happening again... LineageOS 15.1 nightlies have started trickling out and there is no addonsu-15.1-arm-signed.zip available...
I am going to assume NOT to flash 14.1 addonSU on a 15.1 ROM... correct me if I am wrong in thinking ==> It is only addonSU, it might work!

Why are there no roms yet for the Pixel 2 XL?

Seems it's been long enough since there are kernels.
The Pixel 2.. Specifically our phone. The unlocked XL is in a very elite and minority based classed of phones. Is it spectacular and an amazing phone? Absolutely but this isn't the Nexus 4, Nexus 5 era anymore.. It's an elite, very expensive phone and in such the amount of people, even developers willing to buy it unlocked are going to be much smaller. You know how many crazy looks I get when people ask how much I paid for my phone and say "$850"..

+1. I agree. Android is not what it used to be. The OS and user experience has evolved greatly. Honestly, what is the point of ROMs anymore? The last time I installed one was right before getting the Nexus 5. There are so many ways to customize a stock rooted device, that to me, makes a ROM kind of pointless. I commend all of the developers though for putting their hard work into an "all-in-one" experience. So many talented people in the Android community nowadays. However, many of those 'old timers' are not really investing their time into ROMs anymore. Ehh. My ranting is done. I would suggest that the OP spend their time researching the many different apps and tweaks available as a root user. Because all a ROM really is, is just somebody pre-modifying various functions in a flashable package. Research, invest time, and feel pride into creating your own... ROM.

Very nicely said. ROMS were once a "look what I can do now" novelty that added lacking features and battery saving techniques to Android. And seriously most of the time a lot of it was placebo. Especially with kernels. Kernels got to the point I felt like I was reading an infomercial with all the promises of battery savings and 7 virgins when I die if I installed it. And like most kernels and ROMS every thread on XDA fell into two classes of comments.
1. Feature requests that were outlandish or novelty items only (ie: Themes)
2. *****ing about bugs, random reboots and crashes
Yeah.. I'll stiick with rooted stock in 2018.. I can do everything I could only wish I could do 5 years ago with just that.
You guys make good points and to each their own, but I personally still love ROMs! Maybe it's because I made the switch from iOS to Android when the Nexus 6P was about mid-cycle, so all the ROM flashing/tweaking/modding is still fairly new and fun to me.
But it's not only that, I just like the little things custom ROMs offer, such as clock options, battery options, QS shade quick pull down from the left or right side, clear all FAB, hiding lock screen shortcuts and so on.
I understand there are probably root apps that could do most or all these things, but it's nice to have it built-in the OS with a custom ROM. It eliminates the need to have additional apps to do something as small and simple as move the clock to the centre in the status bar for example.
Oh, and I can't forget full Subsratum support! I know it works with Oreo if we use the Andromeda add-on, but it just goes back to what I said about not having the need to use anything additional because it's already built in the OS.
Lastly, this might just be me, but it's nice to be a part of a ROM community, sharing our enthusiasm for Android and learning from one another by discovering bugs, or screwing things up when flashing/updating and so on!
All-in-all, I'd love to see ROMs for this device, particularly PureNexus as that's my favourite lol but I understand the A/B layout+some other changes Google has made causes for some obstacles for devs to overcome. When is never an issue for me, but it would be awesome for some ROMs to appear as it just gives us more options and customization

I had some Samsung and LG phones in the past: In earlier times (Samsung Galaxy S2 and S4) you had AOSP- or CM-based ROMs which worked very well. With these, you could have a Nexus-like device, but with removable battery and SD-card support.
Fast-forward to the LG G5, and there were no fully working AOSP-based ROMs anymore. You had always stuff which didn't work, so I couldn't use them as daily driver (no offense intended to the developers, the devices got more complicated over time and the vendor-support was also lacking).
So I had to de-bloat the stock ROM manually and flashed the GApps to get a decent device.
With the Pixel 2XL, this isn't necessary at all. The stock ROM is clean, performs well, has an excellent battery runtime, gets updated every month and has no bloat.
So while custom ROMs would be nice, they are not mandatory anymore for me.
Also, we already have an AOSP-ROM for people who want to flash something different.

Times they are changing
I remember using AOSP with my SGS4 and customizing it via Xposed/ GravityBox. Fun times...
Then I used RR for some time with all these options built-in.
With the Pixel 2 XL, I simply use Substratum now. Substweaks gives me the center clock, Quick Tiles customizings etc. With OMS, you can do lots of things which required Xposed/GB in the past.
Not that I'm saying that we don't need Xposed anymore at all, but with OMS you can do lots of things which required mods/ ROMs in the past.

I'm the same way, I use my pixel 2 on a regular basis but I find myself turning on my Nexus 6 and flashing a ROM or two because I just like doing it. After so many years of flashing it's going to be hard to just stop.

Question Is it safe to say?

That there is going to be very little development for this phone? I skipped the last few pixels, and was excited to get back into the game with the P6. But never did I remember it taking this long for Roms and mods to develop. Seems as though those days are gone. Samsung with their creation of Good Lock, seems to have surpassed the Pixel.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I haven't kept count, but there's been news in this section of at least 4-6 different ROMs for the P6P.
We have at least 3-4 custom kernels, as well.
As far as other development, click the Development or Mods filters and see what helpful things folks have cooked up for us so far, less than two months after the phone has been in user's hands.

I think there are at least 5 kernels already. Also I think there are at least another 3 or 4 roms either being tested or already having stable builds. There are also many mods already. I don't think the days of yore are quite gone yet...
Development and developer's will come... especially if they have the source code and the device!
I think this is all wishful thinking boys. The mods and roms that are out there are slim compared to the old days. You guys are reaching for straws here. Those days are over
I know for sure the devs behind Scorpion are working on bringup. Rom bringup for most devices is not easy or quick. Give it a few more months.
Phil would be a good Grinch
I'm a realist boys. Just ain't gonna happen. Sadly, I maybe forced to jump back to the S22 when it's released.
I hope you guys prove me wrong.
Actually I was dead surprised by the amount of development activities going on here, the multitude of Kernels and the first custom ROMs after very few weeks after release.
This is something that actually reminded me of "old times" whereas many other devices show comparable little development activities.
Not sure what you are looking for but I have to agree that "old times" are over - nowadays the necessity for custom development is much smaller than is was back then....

No, that's not being a realist, that's being a pessimist, my dude. Realist is looking at things realistically, the good and bad. Pessimism is looking at everything negatively, realistically or no. You are doing the latter

I'd like to be able to have some customization, aside form the little that is out there. Also, it's just too difficult to upgrade anymore. I no people will chime in and say it's not. But it is. Having to hook to a computer and do adb commands to take an update is not something I want to be to doing all the time, praying my data isn't lost.
Samsung has surpassed the Pixel development community. I know people will hate on that, but it's true. I was able to do so much more with my Samsung out of the box, then I can with my Pixel. Add in the connection issues, and this is a dud.

Seems like you already had your mind made up to begin with considering you're disregarding almost everything people are saying, which makes one wonder why you even opened this thread to begin with

My mind is definitely not made up. I hate Samsung. But you have to give them props for what they have done. I was so excited to come back to Pixel land. But around a month later I'm ehhhhhhhh.

Yeah, all those issues when updating via Fastboot or ADB are a bit unsettling - I guess we have to wait for TWRP for a bit more of leeway. But at least we have a phone which can be unlocked and relocked without issues or warranty impacts !
As to tweaking: I was missing Gravitybox but got most of the tweaks thanks to the developers here - so that is good for me, but of course your mileage may vary ....
In the end I think we have seen the beginning of development on this phone, not its end

Thank you for seeing my point there.
And I am hoping you are correct.

"Just ain't gonna happen".
Sure sounds like your mind is made up..
Also, "...a month later...". I don't think it's being a "realist" to expect a plethora of roms to be available in 1 month, especially since many developers may have just gotten the phone or may not even have the phone as of yet. Development takes time and testing.

Well said, and I agree with all three of your statements.
Well my last phone was the Galaxy S10 and, oh boy did it take long until development really started. The Pixel 6 development is way quicker.
The roms and mods were more basic as well in the beginning, just give it time my man. The phone is barely 2 months old.
The 6pro has a fulfillment issue as well. Many people still don't have them yet.

the image attached is the s21 ultra development as of today, i would say the pixel 6 pro is in a good state considering we don't have twrp yet.
I do agree that the glory days of flashing your phone are over, but thats also because the OS has matured quite considerably where custom roms are replaced with simple magisk modules.
One other factor for me personally is losing app functionality for important apps by tripping safety net, but thanks to the workaround i was comfortable enough with rooting my p6p.
