Awful LTE signal after update - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I have an unlocked 10 running on T-Mobile US. I previously had no problems at home with a 4G LTE connection. But after updating to 1.53.617.5 this week, my LTE signal at home has completely disappeared on me. What's worse, the phone shows full bars, and won't drop to a slower connection. I have to manually switch to 4G/WCDMA (Auto) and use the slower 4G connection, which I presume is HSDPA.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? I even did a factory reset, but it didn't help whatsoever.
Between this and the weak Wi-Fi, I'm starting to have second thoughts about this phone.

My LTE and wifi signal are slightly weaker on the 10 than what I'm used to seeing. Also on Tmo US. My LTE drops when I'm not upstairs lol. I took the ota when I first started up the phone so I can't speak for the other version.

Does it stay on LTE even though you have no reception? Mine does, and it also shows full bars.

Yeah mine doesn't do that. Switches to 4g

Have you tried doing a factory reset?

Maybe try wiping the cache partition? Check the "weak Wi-Fi signal" thread for directions on how to perform it. Just a suggestion.

I just tried wiping the cache partition. No dice.
I installed the OpenSignal app to see what's going on. It seems that the phone is locking onto a cell tower that's many miles away (in the middle of a river!), instead of many LTE cell towers that are only a block away from me. This makes no sense. It also indicates full reception.
The latest update definitely messed something up. Perhaps it's related to the "Wi-Fi stability enhancements".

I have this problem as well, spoke to T-Mobile and of course they tried to blame it on the phone saying that they cannot guarantee that an unlocked phone will work with their network. I proceeded to tell them that the phone was listed as fully compatible with T-Mobile's LTE network they had no answer. I know it's not a solution at all but I'm on T-Mobile's prepaid service so at the beginning of next month just before I need to make a payment I'm switching to AT&T to see if that is any better
I'm somewhat disappointed and I really don't know if I should return the phone or not

While I do think the 10 doesn't get a signal as strongly as other phones do (my S6 was great), I think the latest firmware (1.53) has impacted reception for the worse.

Wait till HTC release T-Mobile RUU , you can change your mid, cid to tmo and flash it.

I shouldn't have to flash the phone to get it to work. Also, the purpose of getting the unlocked version was to have a carrier-free phone.
The more I use this phone, the more I notice that LTE connectivity is screwed up. It likes to lock onto the wrong cell towers that offer no reception (but still display full bars).
What's interesting is that when I turn on Wi-Fi, the phone locks onto the correct cell towers.
Forget the camera; HTC needs to resolve all these radio connectivity issues!

I agree the purpose of getting the unlocked phone was to not have to have a carrier branded device. I noticed that as well with the phone connecting to be incorrect tower. It really is frustrating because I've already started paying for my phone so I don't want to have to return it, I like all aspects of it physically but something has to be done about this reception. I used to get 4 to 5 bars and now I'm lucky if I get two

This is really ridiculous, I've only had my phone off the charger for just over an hour and I've used 10% of battery. I don't keep Wi-Fi on all the time I only had to turn it on to use Wi-Fi calling because my signal is so bad, HTC really needs to do something with the radios in this phone because the poor cell signal is just killing my battery life. Is anybody experiencing this same problem?

Root your phone and then install better battery stats or gsam or any other utility that can show you specific wakelock stats and info. From there you can use that info to track down the specific wakelock.

I found that the Wi-Fi activity stat is wrong. Even on airplane mode, my 10 says that Wi-Fis active.

HTC Desire and Reception (o2 UK)

Hey All,
I've completed a search but couldn't find anything specific on the o2 network.
I know there's been some issues with regards to reception after the 2.2 update. But i've had variable reception ever since I've had the phone which makes me wonder whether it's a phone issue as opposed to a network issue.
Is anyone else on o2 who can either confirm or reject my query? Even when I don't move my phone the reception jumps up and down like a yoyo which makes it frustrating when trying to send texts or dropping call quality (or calls itself).
If it's a network issue then it could be because there are too many o2 users and the network can't cope with the volume of people using it. I've been with o2 for a good number of years now and never really had a problem until now.
If it's a phone issue then I may look for another phone...possibly go back to a regular phone as other than checking my e-mails and occasionally going online (via wifi) I know I don't use the phone to it's full potential...
On o2 myself mate. Been with them for two years.
Tbh the reception is ok. But not the best. As for the desire the signal is pretty solid on mine but at times the data is terrible when colleagues have another operator and full data...
IMHO its hit and miss and by the nature of wireless networks.
You may find another operator better. But you might not. Its too hard to say...
reception issues
Maybe this is a radio issue I've had a lot of problems.
I've just changed my radio which is now something like
5.10.05_17.This was a downgrade and has turned no signal into
a full signal without even moving position. So I don't think its an o2 issue .
Hope this helps I'm sure it will.
Are you referring to 2g or 3G coverage? O2's 3G coverage is pretty poor comparedto others at the moment - although hopefully this will change once their network share with vodafone kicks in properly.

Good question, because of poor battery performance I rarely have 3g/mobile on so I'm referring to 2g. I only use 3g when I'm out and about and need to check something quickly. Otherwise I use WiFi at home. When is the network share scheduled to happen?

I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm on Vodafone and it's total gash for data. Yes, they have a lot of coverage, but a heavily congested network meaning that while you may well have a good signal, best of luck getting any data through it. I can't imagine adding you lot to an already congested network is going to help much. (of course it depends on where you are in the country - I'm in central London where the problems with Voda network congestion are well documented)
The Guy only asked about call reception now were miles away.

Intermittent phone signal

I've had my HOX now for just over a month and i'm loving it. One thing that is slightly bugging me is that occasionally the phone signal will completely cut out giving me an 'x' where the signal strength normally is and telling me that I can only make emergency calls only.
This will correct itself within 30 seconds or so and go back to giving me a signal. This doesnt happen all the time which has made it harder for me to diagnose. Do you think it is a problem with the sim card (Orange UK network) or is it likey to be an issue with the radio software?
I never had an issue with Orange on my Desire although this is a different SIM card.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
I think this is a common problem I'm on Vodafone and this happens to me. I applied a fix when installing insertcoin Rom a while back and it doesn't do it as often now.
I'm glad this has been mentioned now because my One X (On Vodafone) drops connection all the time. The amount of times that I have been somewhere and needed to transfer money through the Natwest App and haven't been able to is getting annoying now. As I am not rooted I can't try any fixes but I have found by using GSM only around where I live, it won't drop signal half as much or often. I don't have a 3G mast near me so its always dropping connection switching between the two as opposed to a smooth transition.
Hi,
You are not alone. I'm on Orange UK and have seen this problem on quite a few occasions. Unfortunately, as yet I can't see any pattern to understand when it happens or what causes it.
Tim
Happens to me on 3. Sometimes I have to hard reset to get it back.
Glad that its not just me. At least I can rule out an issue with the sim.
As it seems to cover more than 1 network, could it be a radio issue that is addressed in a future firmware upgrade?
It is definitely not just you. I'm in Malaysia on the Maxis network and have this problem as well. It happens randomly - at the most it happens twice in a day.
Do you also sometimes get the message 'Preparing SIM card...' at the bottom of the screen?
I brought my phone to the HTC service centre and they offered to take it in to test the radio. I will do this when I get back from my holiday and keep you guys posted!

I do get that message at the bottom of the screen. I'd be interested to hear what the outcome is once you've had your radio tested.
Yep, it's the [email protected] radio firmware HTC has provided us with. Radio 2.05 is much better. HTC are useless with updates. I've had problems with my network connection for 2 months!

Me too.
Except I am on Tim @ Brasil.
This is nearly always down to signal.
If you're in an area that has decent 2G signal but fluctuating/low 3G signal then the phone will keep trying to connect to the 3G signal. Sometimes it'll be too weak and not be ableto connect and will stick with the 2G signal. If the 3G signal is only just strong enough to connect the phone will switch to 3G mode (dropping the 2G signal). Then it'll realise that the 3G signal is too weak to do anything with (showing an 'X' in the signal area) and drop back to your full 2G signal.
3G signal is breathable which means that if lots of people are connected to the 3G mast then it's signal area (i.e. distance from mast) is reduced. If no-one is using the 3G mast then it's area is bigger.
Perhaps your signal is breathing in and out of use where you are.
Obviously the radio can have an affect too, but with so many people using the same radio software there are going to be some it works well for and others it doesn't.
Personally, I keep my phone on 2G/GSM Only for most of the time and then switch to 3G when I want to use data. I hardly ever get problems with signal, and if I do I shrug and put it down to the coverage in the area I'm in.
P.S. Saying this, my 2G signal seems to drop in and out when I have WiFi turned on. Usually when I'm using wifi I'm not making calls anyway so it doesn't bother me...
Thanks for this useful info. How do I set my phone to 2g only so I can test this theory out ?

It seemed 'good enough' to me, but I only had 2 days with my phone on 2.05 and then my camera wouldn't work at all. So I sent the phone back for a replacement. Crazy it's still not fixed!
I've had 5 faulty phones now.

Which is correct, however any phone working correctly should manage to switch between 2G/3G without problems, i.e. you should not find the phone without a signal at all provided there is 2G coverage, which seems to be the case being reported here. My previous phones with 3G/2G never had a problem, and the HTC One X has been no different for me, it hasn't dropped it's signal, I'm on Vodafone in UK.

This is happening fairly regularly for me on UK T-Mobile. Seems to happen when switching between Orange and T-Mobile or T-Mobile and 3G T-Mobile. I've got a ROM that distinguishes between a 2G and 3G connection in the carrier name area.

Which, and what about it was supposed to be a fix? I'm using MaXimus 2.1.
It happens to me also. I'm on 3 in Denmark. They providing only 3G coverage in area. So far, I figured out that it's happening when I'm loosing signal completly (i.e. when I go down in concrete basement), and when I'm within coverage again, phone is unable to register on any network at all. Sometimes can help turn airplane mode on and off, or sometimes I have to turn phone off and on again.

Radio: 1.1204.105.14

Strange Antenna Issue

Today my phone started having some issues.
In places I was supposed to get full coverage and all bars I am know getting only 2 bars...
And in places I was getting 2 bars I get no signal at all !!!
I think it is an Antenna thing. Maybe it is broken, IDK...
What could I do? I have no warranty as I bought this phone 2 months ago in EUA and I live in Brazil...
Thankss

I'm also having the same issue. I have a maguro yakju variant galaxy nexus. I'm getting only 1-2 bars and have no warranty as I got it from ebay, gps is also showing problems, but the phone came in new sealed condition. Please let me know if there's a fix to this
It seems to be an Power Amplifier issue. I am gonna put in a Repair Store and they are going to try to fix my phone.
I am going to keep updating this too with the progress.

What were the dbm stats? Your signal bar never tells the truth unless there is no service at all.
the signal bars are responing to dbm status.
I am checking both on the same time and I didnt get any anomalies betweent them...
I just put the phone to work in a place near home and they said it was an Power Amplifier issue and they're going to try fixing it.
Thanks.
I have exactly the same problem but my phone has only dealer warranty. Is there any chance to fix this through software?
If you have this exact same issue you cant fix it through software, because its an hardware problem...
It should be an hardware thing, if it isn't I don't know what else I could do.
Just updating...
My phone is now working. They changed the PA ( power amplifier) and now I have normal signal!
BUT, I am having two issues.
When I select "only use 2g networks" the phone than changes to edge and connects. When I deselect the 2g option the phone reconnects but it keeps on 2g. It does not switch to 3g...
I have to reboot the phone/radio.
AND,I am not getting 4G HSPA+ anywhere! Only HSDPA...
ANYONE????
Today I also have noticed problems with connection. I've very fresh GNx, had it with me at the office since Monday but today whole day was on GPRS. I thought it is an issue from the GSM network but after coming home where 3G should fly (and it does on Motorola Defy) my GNx was still on GPRS.
But when I make a call the data connection returns to 3G and some time after switches back to 2G.
If I leave phone somewhere where is better coverage it keeps 3G.
Meanwhile my Defy has 3G everywhere.
Shall I sent the GNx back to Amazon?

Man,
If you are in warranty you should return your phone for them to fix/change...
Try changing radios before doing that. It can be software related!

I'm on the same radio since beginning. And the same ROM was while phone kept 3G and now, when it is loosing it.
However, I wonder how much the network could influence the situation.
I've left overnight Nexus and Defy on the strongest coverage point and in the morning GNx was still at GPRS while Motorola switched from 3G down to GPRS.
I'm getting paranoid (and not talking about ROM). Restored phone clean via fastboot to factory state. Will be watching it over weekend and then decide what to do.
8 hrs later.
Phone kept weird for few hours at work and now flies with full range 3G. Also at home where yesterday it was switching to 2G.
I bet this was Vodafone way to thank me for cancelling my contract.
Gonna keep it at pure stock for an hour or two and then will change to some custom ROM... Maybe.
Updating again.
I've been testing my phone with the new "Power Amplifier" and now I can use my phone regularly.
The problem is... The phone does not support anymore the frequency of 850Mhz neither 3G or 2G.
I THINK they have put a PA that does not amplify this frequency.
My carrier uses: 2G:900/1800 3G:850/2100 3.5G(HSPA+):850Mhz mostly
So I understood why in some places I dont have any 3G coverage and in almost all places I can't get HSPA+ speeds.
Am I correct? Does the PA has to do w/ all this frequency thing?

LTE always reverting to 3G/H/H+ on ALL custom and all stock roms

I had LTE for around a month, then out of nowhere, no updates, nothing it disappeared, it's been gone for almost 2 weeks now.
My carrier (O2-UK) says there is no issue, I have literally no idea, I am almost certain it's just Oneplus phones.. but anyone have any info?
As I said, I've tried custom ROM, I've tried all the stock roms clean flashed.

No one else has this issue?! Saw a few on google but no fixes...
I can say that my phone often sticks to edge when I disable the wifi, it won't switch to 3g/4g unless I enable/disable it. I believe this was not the case with oos 3.2.1, with which my phone came with (only have it for a week now). This also happens with CM13. I think there was a update to the radio in the last oos update, so this might be the reason.
I am currently on OxygenOs 3.2.4 and my Lte seems to work properly. I tested it on a 4g area for about an hour or more and lte sticks with no drop to 3g. I will test it more and report back.

I used to have solid good 4G here, now I don't no matter what I do. It isn't a network issue either
Did you double check your data SIM card is set to LTE? I had that setting change to 3g through a weird mix of circumstances. Was miffed I wasn't getting 4g and it turned out my SIM was set to 3g max.

I get LTE if I go somewhere else, eg just outside off where I live.
But I had very good LTE where I lived too, inside, outside, then a week or two ago it vanished.
same here always reverting from 3g to 2g biggest issue with this phone
please fix this 1+ we all having hard time with this issue
my 1+3 never stays on 3g or LTE always go back to 2g
Silly suggestion, but are you on the correct APN? My oneplus initially connected on the incorrect APN for my carrier and I wasn't getting LTE, but 3G/H. Once I corrected it, my LTE was constant in the places it should have been.
Works fine for me you probably just getting a stronger h+ signal and it's jumping between mast's

That would make no sense. I had LTE for a solid month sat right at this desk, now, none.
Where I am in the UK we have loads of cell towers around me and it's always jumping about. There is an app that lets you pick what cell tower you want to use, I have forgotten it's name but might be worth a look. Or could be they doing work in your area. Sorry can not think what else it could be
The oneplus 3 and oneplus 2 just don't like LTE, they will find any reason to go to H+/3
Same issue
I am on Three UK, have came from a Galaxy S7 Edge, and that got constant LTE in most areas, now my phone seems to prefer H+ a LOT more than LTE, reverting to it whenever it can, not great, OnePlus really needs to address this issue, wouldn't mind so much if LTE in my area wasn't 75Mbps, compared to 10Mbps on H+

Same issue, same carrier, same frustration
Put me down for the same issue. With faster battery drain on 3.2.4, as well as random complete "no service" signal loss, for maybe 5 seconds. It's annoying as sin, and very disappointing. OnePlus at least is aware of the issue:

Fix
Have found no fix, have reverted to S7 edge, has MUCH better LTE and more reliable signal overall.

Question Horrible signal connectivity?

Hi all, I just recently bought this pixel 6 pro a few weeks ago and I've been having horrible connection issues. The main one that plagues me is when all of a sudden, for no reason, I lose mobile data connection. I have some bars of signal with the LTE or 5G icon but with an exclamation point in it. Or sometimes it just loses signal randomly like in the screenshot below. Both screenshots were taken minutes apart.
I've noticed this was an issue for most people and have posted about this here, but I haven't seen anyone complain about it recently. Is there a fix for this problem?
Unfortunately for a great manu people, myself included this phone has garbage reception. There is no known fix.
Me to
My troubles began after I updated the phone to A13 enrolling to Beta and then leaving it.
The problem was that the phone will be stuck to H+ all day although weI have good coverage of 4G and 5G in town. Sometimes the connection would just drop and I had to engage flight mode to reset it.
Yesterday I decided that I had enough and did the reset of network settings. Today I have noticed that the problem was solved. Now I have 4g and 5g as in the past. But the problem now is that the Internet just would not work from time to time although it shows full bars. Had to use aeroplane mode again today about 3 times.
It's very annoying to say the least. Had thoughts of changing the phone. Not even speaking about heating issues when on mobile. Horrible.

I also have to occasionally switch on/off airplane mode when the phone cannot connect to the internet from time to time
i agree, terrible signal problems, all time. I`ll try to reset all network settings
for me it`s a disrespect from google to treat all final user like beta tester
Same here. Super slow connection even in areas with towers close by.
Been having this issue ever since I updated to Android 13.
Having only had the phone for 2 weeks, I took it to my provider who said all they can do is return it to Google. With both my eSIM and my physical sim dropping out together, apparently its an RIL problem. They did say that if it's just an issue with one SIM card, replacing it will fix it.
I think this can be solved downgrading to android 12.1 dev you can downgrade to android 12.1 without downgrade bootloader it's safe and don't brick your device because it's a android 12 that runs over android 13 bootloader. Keep in mind that this will erase your data permanently! Do a backup before do it
This has been happening since the phone came out. This is due to the old modem they are using from Samsung. There is no fix.
My coworker has this happen with his 6 Pro, while my 6 is perfect ironically. He has verizon, I got tmobile. He has to leave the store to make a call, but I don't. This has been for the last 6 months though

Had the phone sent away to Google for repairs as the issue ended up happening when I was showing my provider. Got it back and Google said there were "no issues" with it and they couldn't replicate it with either SIM type. Either they put out a hotfix or it magically went away, but I'll see how it goes after using it again.

If you've got another phone (5G compatible), you can try to see if the problem is the phone, or the actual network coverage.
Also, something else you could do is switch to 4G and see if the problem persists.
The thing with 5G is that the coverage is really spotty. That's in general. I don't live in the US, so I don't know what the actual coverage is over there. But that's a general thing with 5G. It cannot penetrate as well as 4G, and even worse than 3G or 2G. When you increase frequency, you lose distance (coverage). So basically 5G needs a lot more repeaters to get proper coverage.
But you could try another phone in the exact same area. Oor..try to switch to 4G and see if the issue still occurs. You could also call the carrier and ask if they have any idea why is this happening.

Same with me. I keep 5G turned off for a couple reasons.
1, battery life.
2. 4G is fast enough for me.
3. Better signal.
