Bootloop on brand new G4... what's your advice... send it back or fix it? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Sorry for the mistakes, i'm french
I bought and received a brand new G4 (serial N°603XXX)
The very first day of using it i had a bootloop
I really think that a G4 is perfect for me now and i hesitate on what to do:
Should i send it back to the seller (he agrees to refund me 100%) to buy a new one or should i fix it?
the cons and pros:
If I send it back, i take the chance to receive a new one that will maybe do a bootloop after a few month or years while i'll have many data on it BUT, I may have a new phone that will work immediatly.
If i fix it, i'll have to send it to LG (actually, a professionnal tried to fix it through software and didn't manage to do it.... he told me that it's certainly a hardware problem)... for 2 weeks maybe and i'll have back a phone that will work but that would have already been "opened"... it's a shame for a new phone.
My opinion:
it's better to have a phone that is fixed than a new phone that will maybe die later.
Can i think that if it is fixed ,it will NEVER do a bootloop again?
What's your opinion, please?
Thanks
Mathieu:laugh:

It can't necessarily be fixed, it can only be replaced.
I had my G4 for exactly 11 months (June 2015 release date through last week) before I ended up with the bootloop problem. I got it replaced under factory warranty, but it is a manufacture's defect.
If I were you, I'd just get the G5.

to buy a new "flagship" is not an option.
i hesitate between fixing it or changing it for a new one
if they "fix" it... what do they do? they change the motherboard?
if the phone is "fixed"... am i right to think that it won't have any bootloop problem?
thanks

What is it about the G4 that makes it perfect for you? What about the V10?

V10 is to big (and not on sale in France )
with my budget and all my needs, the G4 is the phone i need (compared to all the other phone with the same price)
so... what do you think about my strategie...? is it good or am i wrong?

I say exchange it for a new G4. It's not 100% certain that all G4 phones will have bootloop issues, but it is 100% certain that the one you have right now does.
The problem is that all LG is doing is replacing motherboards, but even new motherboards may have issues, as you've witnessed. So what does a "fixed" phone really mean? They're not doing any fine soldering work to actually repair the problem. If they were, I'm sure someone would have noticed that by now and there would be DIY threads on how to fix it yourself.
I would just make it a habit to regularly make backups of your phone and be prepared in case the new G4 fails in the future.
I was one of the biggest G4 fans when it first came out since it's also everything I wanted in a phone other than the 808, but throughout the course of this week, I decided that I was over it. If I'm lucky, my replacement G4 lasts long enough for other better options to come on the market at the right price, new or used.

OK. Thank you for your answer. I thought that they would install a motherboard that DOESN'T HAVE this bootloop problem but if they do as you say (install a motherboard that may also have the problem.... There are no reason to do that)
And wich phone do you think about?

You're welcome. If LG could guarantee that you would receive a motherboard that won't ever bootloop, then it would be worth repairing the G4 you have now, but if your current G4 was built in March 2016 (serial 603, after the problem was allegedly fixed) and it still bootloops, then I don't have much confidence that LG completely figured out the problem.
If I were to replace my G4, I like the LG V10 if there is a reliable root method released for the T-Mobile US version. Otherwise, I would consider the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge only after a very big discount, so that would have to wait at least a year. I like that LG still believes in removable batteries and obviously their camera hardware and software is excellent, but they need to improve the quality and reliability of their phones. Also, the G5 is a poorly implemented concept that I really don't like, so the V10 successor needs to get everything right for LG to prove they have any idea of what they're doing anymore.

So you're telling me that all the LG G4 even the new one can have this problem and that if they try to fix it, they may install a motherboard that CAN have this problem. It's crazy.
I love this phone but I don't want a phone that can break at anytime

It's not likely, but it's possible. Recently, some users, including you, have reported that phones with serial numbers starting with 603 and 604 have gotten bootloops as well. With the original 505 phones, these issues started happening with great frequency after half a year, so we could have to wait until later this year to find out whether or not the newly manufactured G4 phones will also start showing the same symptoms with high frequency.
I wouldn't recommend the G4 anymore either, so that's why I asked earlier what do you like about it, because you might be better off finding those features in another phone. I'm just enjoying my replacement G4 while I have it, but I no longer think it's going to be something I can keep forever, like a couple of Motorola dumbphones I still have from 2006 and 2009.

Stay on G4 or move to OnePlus 3?

Guys, how do you think?
I have my G4 (S/N 512), camera is perfect, CPU is good, screen is excellent.
I don't care about updates, but I love Cyanogenmod, clean Android etc. I want to mod my phone, personalize it in every way I can. Unfortunelly I can't with locked bootloader. I could just unlock it, but I'm aware of bootloop. When it'll happen my phone will be just paper clip. So I'm thinking. The OP3 is near. OnePlus got great terms of guarantee. But still, I'm kinda in love with G4. I jumped from SGS3 to it. So it was my designed phone.
Anyway, what do you think? Will my phone brick? Move to OP3?
Stay until you get the bootloop (as you expect). It is kinda risk now to jump over to OP3. I know the rumoured specs are good but you wont loose by waiting a bit for some few reviews
lol op?Support epic joke.
Which serial number is your phone? I have a 510 device and i believe those are safe from the bootloop issue because those have the v1.1 motherboard. I unlocked the bootloader on mine because of this and it has been quite nice with CyanogenMod 13. However, like yourself i'm debating whether to upgrade the phone later this year. I don't 'hate' the G4, in fact it's a nice phone with a fantastic camera, screen and good performance. But there's something about it that i don't like, i bet this sounds stupid but it's just such a boring phone, honestly. Before this i had the OnePlus One and that felt like something genuinely special, and i kinda wish i'd stuck with that instead of buying the G4.
I doubt i'll go back to another OnePlus device because of their shocking customer service, if you end up with a bad device then it seems like you're gonna be ****ed for a few months. There was one person on Reddit who sent his phone back in February and still hasn't received it as of yesterday, like what the hell is that about. I'm going to wait and see what the new Nexus devices are like in about three months, i think that's the way forward for me because it would be nice to have a device which receives updates quicker than anything else, and always stays on top with the vast developmental community behind it. Only problem with those is the price and lack of a memory card slot, but we'll have to see what happens, maybe the prices will be a little more affordable this time to compete with the OP3 and similar devices.
What about Moto Z Force, if it's not only for US market? Depends on the price of course.
I just upgraded from my G3 to a factory refurb G4 and so far I really like it all except for the issue where you cannot wake up the phone by double tapping the screen like 99% of the time. There's supposed to be a way to upgrade the lg keyboard app unless you are, like myself, on Verizon in which case they so graciously removed all the useful settings menu items such as app upgrades, etc...

i have 601 how do i know what MB version i have?
If you want to hear my opinion for new phones:
Wait 1/2 to 1 year. Why?
• You know, if the phone will get its love by devs.
• It's also much cheaper.
• Many little hardware-bugs will probably be fixed.
3 good reasons to wait. New != better. Sad new world, I know. Except it's a Nexus: Same price until new one is released, same hardware - but devs will love it .

There should be a sticker on the inside of the box which states the serial number and has the motherboard version at the end in closed brackets. But as your phone is 601, it will have the updated motherboard and so you're safe from the bootloop problems.

thanks ill check it out.. but theres still people reporting bootloops even with 603. ??
i have it bootloader locked just in case. i own tmobile h811..
I think I am *very* close to going with the OnePlus 3. Just need a little more review/confirmation to make the jump.
Considering OP3 already has a CM13 build going and kernel sources out, I'd honestly get rid of the G4 while its still worth something. I would've done the same thing if it weren't for the fact my piece of garbage G4 decided to bootloop literally days before the OP3 release.

My double tap to wake used to work great. Then I got bootloop issue, had phone repaired from LG, and double tap to wake basically NEVER works. Not sure if it'd be worth a FDR or what.

Mine bootlooped friday and I'm going to get the OP3 in the next few days. I'm trying to get my G4 repaired, if LG dont do it then I'll use my insurance to have it replaced. I plan on using the time I have without it to see how I lkthe OP3. If I like it, I'll sell the G4, if not, I'll sell the OP3.
I've read a lot of bad things about OP3's support, but in trying to get my G4 repaired, it can't be much worse than LG's (edit: since I made this comment, I've been on LG Chat on their website with a really helpful guy called Carl who's said my phone is covered with a 2 year warranty and they will fix it - much better than the cookie cutter email response team).
No removable battery on the OP3. They claim to charge their phone to 100% in 45 minutes. The G4 can be at 100% in about 3 minutes from shutoff to reboot with a fresh battery installed. I love my G4.
I loved my G4 till it stopped working and LG refuse to fix it because rooting voids the warranty.

This statement is false and very dangerous for users. All smartphones, even with S/N starting with 60x are prone to bootloop problem. I have my LG G4 with v1.1 motherboard, S/N 602 and guess what happened to it...

Well, that's news to me. When i bought my G4 in December the bootloop problem had already become widely known, and i did extensive research into it on XDA and other websites, but at the time all 510 and 511 devices were deemed to be completely safe. If those devices were affected by the bootloop problem then i wouldn't have even considered buying it.

LOL, there are even cases of the new G5 bootlooping. LG has become such a joke. And it's a shame because the G4 would've been a perfect phone if they had caught the bootlooping and image retention issues while testing it.

Thinking about the lg g4

I am considering this phone but was wondering how easy it is to root and are there some issues with it? I have been using AT&T galaxys for a while and am tired of their locked bootloader. Is Verizon the best choice or would Tmobile be better? thanks
Don't. Way too many boot loops, and the verizon version can not be unlocked nor rooted, at least on MM.
I wouldn't necessarily say don't buy it. I had a g3 on Verizon that I could fully unlock and do whatever to, and I still bought the g4.
I was a huge fan of the design of the g3, so I wanted something similar to it. The g4 is slightly bigger and taller which is something most people wouldn't like but I do like it.
I've never had any of the boot loop issues and its not difficult to root it. I'm currently running the rooted 13b image from the General section, rooted, and it works perfectly. Has been for a month now!
Still really up to your likes and wants, though.

I can't really recommend the G4 to anybody anymore. First is the bootloop issue, it's real, mine just failed last week, and I always babied the phone. It's a severe manufacturing defect that affects the majority of phones produced in the first 4 months or so, and to a lesser degree later models as well. Check out the boot loop thread on reddit, it's huge. LG's response to the issue is the worst, since they are not recalling the phone or repairing it no questions asked. They will only repair it if you are within the first 12 months of warranty and have the receipt to proof it. That means if you buy a used one/refurbished one from eBay or so, you are out of luck, even if it's less than 12 months old. If you buy a non-US model, forget, LG will flat out refuse to repair it too. Finally, if your phone has the slightest ding or crack, LG will not repair it, even it has no relation to the boot loop.
Second the OP mentioned he wants to root without lots of troubles. You can only root Lolipop on the Verizon model, no root possible on MM and probably not on Nougat either (whenever that comes out for the G4).
So in theory the G4 is a nice phone when it works, but you are way too likely to run into serious trouble and rooting is severely restricted.

Honestly for the money, just get a ONE+ 3
Thanks guys, as usual I didn't realize the extent of the boot looping problem until after I bought it. I have a 30 day guarantee so the first problem and back it goes. thanks for the help. It is clearly a great phone when it works. I have not been thrilled with my s5, my s4 worked better it was just that the battery life as abysmal. I will check out the ONE+3, thanks

will my g4 bootloop?

Hi, just bought a second hand g4 with serial number starting 509 will the phone possibly bootloop? Also the phone is the Taiwan model and I currently live in the UK, will having the Taiwan model cause any problems? Thanks
It may Bootloop it may not. There is no definite answer. You may have problems with a non EU model in the EU. They may fix it or may not. You have to ask an LG service centre about this.

If you ask if 509 is prone to Bootloop issue I think it is. Most bootloops happened on 505 though but the general consensus is the newer G4 you have the less chances for bootloop. Again there is no definite answer. We do not know the dirty details. We don't know which S/N is safe and if LG fixed the problem and from which S/N and after they did. We purely rely on public reports to draw conclusions. Up until now 6xx seems safe with only 1 or 2 ppl reported a bootloop on Reddit. Just make a backup and keep your data on the SD card. If you get a bootloop contact LG. They seem to be aware of the issue and fixing all broken phones even out of warranty some times.

I'm in the UK and have the same problem - a bootlooping TWN H815. It was purchased used last year, so no receipt or warranty card. I was wondering whether you had explored paying LG for an out-of-warranty repair? At this stage I'm looking at the best way of cutting my losses.

In US cost of repairs alone is 200US$ cuz of morherboard replacement either that or which u can get a used g4 at the same price so even if ur bootloops there is no point of fixing it....all i can say for u is to wait for atleast an year after the bootloop so the prices fall down for repairs....there is no way u can send it to taiwan also there is no warranty n recepit thats only even if u have a friend there...
Avoiding heat
Hi all am in same boat. Got a EU H815 an 506 hw1.0 and until a week ago had never heard about bootloop issue. I've had unlocked bootloader, rooted with custom ROMs nearly whole ownership and as a result have never had any heat up issues. After reading 100s of pages of the issue my conclusion is that it seems to be heat that affects a soldered component which eventually fails. So based on this theory I'm using Kernel Adiutor to control the throttling when CPU temp gets >55degc. It is only an educated guess but does seem logical. Hope it helps others

Definitely the cause. I did always notice with stock ROMs Genisys etc my phone got hotter than CM and logically it makes sense so I'm sticking with it :fingers-crossed:

Seems like the issue calmed down over the winter in the northern hemisphere. And now that the summer is in full bloom people are looping like crazy. Im hoping between being almost as far north as one gets in usa. So like 85 far. Is blazing here. Plus me doing the thermal mod im keeping my device cool enough to make it as i have no waranty so a mb replacement costs me about 200 dollars american.
I have a s6 and a couple other mid range devices. I wont hesitate to toss my g4 in the trash. I got mine on a trade in from my g3 i only paid like 150 for my g4 so nope not me. Unless i get one cheap.
If this was an automobile this would be a recall i dont understand why these devices arent recalled.
I saw a news cast talking about how they make devices so cheap and breakable "for the economy" why would u buy the newest devices out if your old ones are running quite perfectly they say. So this is for economic reasoning. So go ahead lg keep making s****y devices i will buy a new one but not from you.
Yea i want a g5 but i wont give more that 100 bucks for it in the fear of failure.
Like i said keep it up lg seal your economic fate........

Hi, my G4 had bootloop recently, motherboard was changed under the warranty. New motherboard was made in 04/2018. Is it known if newer motherboards still have a bootloop issues?

they are all bad as far as i know. And yes, nobody has this phone as its later revisions bootlooped after warranty and its more expensive to repair this piece of crap than what it is worth even after repairing.
I have my bootlooped G4 in a drawer since 1 year ago.
I have a phone that's never bootlooped

Nexus 5x boot loop issues shoud i be worried that mine will do the same ?

Hello guys i've been seeing a lot of boot loop news and lg starting to refund people because they don't have spare parts : http://www.mobilechoiceuk.com/News/...offering-refunds-instead-of-replacements.aspx .
So should I be worried that my 5x will boot loop ? I've been using it for 2 months now on 7.0 september update .
just yesterday happened to mine!
Did you try to fix it or got it refunded under warranty ? Also rooted or stock with update ?
Hi, i guess that nobody could know that, but the problem seems to be the same as LG G4, LG V10, LG Flex 2 (all 2015 devices with almost the same motherboard that the Nexus 5x). You can search on the web "bootloop G4 reddit" "nexus 5x bootloop reddit" and you will find tons of reports, the majority of them (N5x) from last 3 months, and this holds the theory that is a welding issue on the CPU or sometimes on the EMMC chip (apparently LG did not weld very well that year...). The mentioned devices (included ours) seem to last from 9 to 14 months and finally the welding breaks. But now, we know it's strictly a HARDWARE issue NOT caused by 7.0 upgrade, irt's only a question of coincidence between the useful life of the weld and the launch of the 7.0 OTA.
So we all got very high possibilities that this occurs to our devices, eventually. I'm not sure that this is gonna happen to you, it really dependes of many many many factors (heavy usage, kernel profiles, temperature of your country/city/house/workplace, etc etc).
Maybe it never happens to you, but i know what you feel, is not very nice to feel that your phone could die in any moment. It was a low punch for me (i owned a G4 and it bootlooped twice) anyway i am going to sell my N5x due to this problem. Hope i help you with my point of view.
It is solder not weld.
Only Google/LG know how widespread the problem is on 5x.
My guess is it is far more than normally expected for phones but nowhere near as prevalent as posts on forums might make it seem.
So normally you might expect .01% of these types of solder problems. If the problem went up 100x to 1% and you sold 3m phones, that means 30,000 phones with the problem, whereas before you might only see 300.
30,000 people searching google and seeing other people posting about bootloop can start a panic.
If you actually had 10, 20, 30% of people with this problem you would have huge threads.
That's just my opinion.

If you said "It is solder not weld." for me, thanks i didn't know the correct word, english is not my native language (I only learn reading on forums), so i see that you know (or it seems) about solder problems. Look i had two LG G4 both of them die, but not just mine even a cousin had the same issue whit his G4, so i really want to know if you think that the 5x soldering problem is a similar case of high-end 2015 LG Phones G4/V10/FLEX2 (of that magnitude)? or if it's just a "paranoia", i mean we know that the bootlooping issue on this device exists but you would recommend me (i really like this phone) to keep it?
This issue got me really worried due to my bad experiencie with the G4. I just bought the N5x 1 month ago. thank you.
same question how to know if my phone will bootloop...i have my nexus 5x 5 week ago but i bay it not new i bay it used...i upgrade to android nougat no issus right now..ho to know if i will have a probleme in the future iam afraid now

I've been dealing with substandard solder since xbox RROD (red ring of death) where everyone was trying to get their xbox cpu reballed until microsoft admitted the problem.
As I mentioned, I'm sure the incident on 5x is much higher than normal phones, but that might still be a low % (even though it is a relatively high absolute # because of the # of phones that are sold)
I have no idea whether 5x is worse, better, or same as G4 problem. G4 seemed even higher, but could be because more phones were sold. Only LG knows for sure.
A lot of folks in US are finding that their credit card actually extends their warranty beyond manufacturers warranty and people will probably get their money back that way if all else fails.
Of course that doesn't help you if you are traveling and the phone dies. I end up using Google Fi as the service provider for this phone, so if that happened I could just shift all the calls and texts to another phone or tablet and keep going until I get a replacement phone, so I'm not super worried.
I regularly back up the stuff on my phone so the most I would lose is like 1 or 2 days of stuff, which I can deal with.
Personally I wouldn't be super worried this is going to happen to you, but be prepared with backups in case it does, but that is good practice for any phone, because it could always get stolen or drop and break.

Well from what I know if you don't have warranty paper then you can't get warranty by just showing the phone . Its not a 100% chance that it will boot loop I think , but if your not safe with it I suggest selling it working rather than looking for help when broken . Thats just my point of view .

Well I think i have the same point of view to sell the phone working rather that having a paper holder . At least for me its the most logical thing to do maybe the chance isn't high for it to happen but I am not secure with a tought that my phone could die + im a heavy user so i migh make it to the boot loop faster .

Well I don't know if there is or not but from what I know about the problem its random af , so I don't think there is unless only some motherboards are prone to the defect but I think it involves all , just happens randomly . Not 100% sure tho !

Thinking Of Buying A G4. Two Questions!

Hey all
As the title states I'm thinking of moving on up to a G4 from a Nexus 5 (5X specs are terribly underwhelming to me, haha) and I'm this close to giving in and buying a used H818P in pristine condition. Just a couple questions
1. How prevalent exactly IS the bootloop/stuck at bootlogo issue? Is there a way I can reliably avoid it (serial numbers? undervolting?) and is there an established fix that can take me back from the brink if it happens? Searching XDA and Google has me very nervous with the ambiguity
2. Are there stock AOSP images/flashable zips for H818P? I don't really go for fancy feature-heavy ROMS.
Help a guy out, haha. An expensive paperweight is the last thing I need! Thanks!

right now i dont see manny bootloops like before but i say as long as you get a 6xx serial chances are very low. there hasnt been anymore massive reports of bootloops. so make sure you have a phone that in any way you can claim warranty.
only tmobile h811 and some european h815- you need to see wich ones can have bootloader unlocked rest is stock rom. maybe only root. in the case that you are in LP.
Ah this is something I didn't know, haha. No AOSP is obviously a deal breaker for me. Off to search for a 6xx serial H815 on eBay, or just stick w my trusty N5 until a good flagship comes round
Thanks fellows!
I wouldn't recommend it. My first H815 G4 (S/N 506) bootlooped, after that I got a replacement (bricked phone got stolen while on its way to repairs) with a 512 serial number.
Although anything higher than 510 was said to be "safe", just yesterday evening that replacement H815 G4 bootlooped, as well.
So from my personal experience there don't seem to be "safe serial numbers" and I'd definitely not buy a used phone (as that will probably have only a very short warranty or even none at all).

but make sure the h815 you getting can be bootloader unlocked.

Well for all I've been able to gather - and I was made to read up by my own SN508.. one dying on me - teh internets will make you thing all '15-manufactured (SN5xx) G4's will bootloop sooner or later, the reported expectancy being a year and a day ))) (No kidding here, mine died a year and 2 month, and I wasn't running much of core-heating stuff like games or bloody arsebook app)
The avalanche of reports seem to cut off around SN603, give or take, tho
a) there's a vague talk about refurbs with SN6xx being basically old bootloopers factory-baked
b) have to keep in mind that with the average life expectancy of "a year and a day" there are TWO possible reasons for lack of '16-year bootloop reports:
- LG fixed it
- It's the same ****, only it's time didn't come yet.
I can't help but admit it is an amazing phone while it works. Not to mention the only one of recent flagships (barring g5 of the same) with both replaceable battery and a SD card - a trend I so wanted to support with my buck.
With all the knowledge and experience I have now I'd say this: new one, SN610+, at a bargain price AND with warranty - a buy. Else - skip.
