Headphone Jack Inconsistent - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I got a brand new pair of earbuds (Brainwavz Delta something) and plugged them into my HTC 10.. they work fine for a bit then if I move the phone just right (or sometimes do nothing) the music stops, there's no longer a headphone icon in the status bar, and I have to unplug and plug them back in.. any idea what this may be caused by?
My Xiaomi Piston 3s worked fine with it, they just died in one ear :/
Edit** the headphones work fine with my Nexus 7, so it's not an issue of compatibility... unless the fact that it's a 3-ring plug (which should be fine, so were the pistons)

Same issue with headphone jack
I was using a pair of Fischer Audio Consonance Pro IEM's on my M8 and now 10 and experiencing the same issues. Songs skipping all over the place, starting, pausing, the OK Google app starting up and saying it couldn't hear what I said, or picking up something from what I am listening to. It is maddening. I love this phone so far, but this issue will drive me crazy if I can't be easily fixed.

It's as if the jack/plug is coming loose, since it fails to recognize the headphones until I unplug it and replug. It's very annoying, and seems to happen only if I tip the phone just the right way :/ hope it's not a hardware defect...

I have a feeling this is because of the edges, if you look at the headphones Jack it isn't flush the edge goes in a little thus you don't get 100% covered 3.5m lead.
Does seem worse in some headphones though

Not really, the best way would be to get a very small 3.5m extension cable, one that isn't so sensitive, but you would only find out through trial and error. Or buy another set of headphones. For example my bose qc25 aren't to bad but a cheap sony set I have if I move abit they crackle.
Is the one bit of design htc messed up. If they would of moved it a few mm to the front and problem solved.
Surprised more people aren't moaning about it as one big points is the 24 bit audio.

Can we confirm that this is an issue across all HTC 10's and not just an unlucky few? I thought my phone might've been defected. 2 Beats headphones I have (got both as gifts) do not seem to work properly. But if I use other a plantronics headset I have, works just dandy. I'm afraid to buy any headphones not knowing which would or wouldn't work. This is not a good thing at all.

I have a Sol republic headphone with mic integrated and doesn't work properly on mine either. However, a friend of mine has a sol republic headphone too, and it works. I bought a panasonic tcm 125 and it works really well.. so IDK, I'm going to change the cable on my sol rep to see if that fix the problem.

Might be headphones with integrated control/mic which has the extra ring :/

Question: when does the issue happen for everyone else? Mine almost always acts up when I turn the screen off, maybe that has something to do with it

I can confirm this is NOT a wide spread issue, I even dropped my phone, not low enough to hang on the cord but enough movement to yank on it, I have messed with it, played around to see if I can make it have an issue, but no issue exists, its either an unlucky few or your headphones.
The only issue I have not related to this is my headphones I tested, the "Audio Technica ATH-M50" jack is too big to fit in the headphone jack while my phone has its case on (Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal), taking the case off solves it, just barely not big enough cut out on the case for that model of headphones, regardless they don't sound as good as my IEM's so F em! lol
Have you guys tried other headphones or AUX cords? I don't have this issue anywhere, not via Headphones, not at my work on are speaker system, and not in my car via AUX.
So the actual shape or design of the headphone jack it self is NOT flawed like I noticed some have speculated.

I've been using my m50x or bose qc20's. Both work fine with no issues.

Pretty sure it's headphones with integrated controls for Apple devices that don't work. My jbl reflects which I use for running (3 rings) don't work if pushed all the way in. But my bose sound true work just fine. And the bose just so happen to be made for samsung and android devices. If I had some apple earpods around I'd test it but I'm thinking it's just headphones with integrated controls exclusively for Apple that might have issues.

Wish that were the case.. mine are specifically Android remote headphones :/

Experiencing similar issues with my Sennheiser Urbanite XL headphones. Seemingly random moments where the headphones seem to just disconnect with the slightest movement (or non-movement).

Hmmm you're right. My sisters htc 10 seemingly all headphones just do not to work. Might be a small batch issue. I'm thinking about exchanging out for another one because I have the yellow band issue on the bottom of the screen anyways. Really don't want to play the exchange game like I did with the nexus 6p especially since HTC doesn't have the same support Google does. Gonna exchange if I get a bad one twice I'm just returning this phone all together. Hate to see it go because this phone is gorgeous.

Ah I have the unlocked model and I modded it to use on Verizon. I had no problem replacing phones through verizon though. Switched out my s6 edge 4 times for free due to display and speaker issues. Of course you end up getting their certified like new device which may or may not bother you. But if it doesn't you can just go to a corporate store and show them some headphones won't work. Most likely they'll ship you one free of charge.

I'm not a huge fan of Verizon anyway.. parents are just too afraid to lose the coverage (T-Mobile is top of my list but they're not so convinced)

I accidentally whacked my headphone jack very lightly with the tip of my finger and now my headphones seem to randomly disconnect. It works fine with my aux cable, but with my headphones with a mic it seems this happens.

My headphones don't like to stay in especially with the silicon case on. It drives me nuts when I have my car stereo hooked into jack and it gets bumped a little and all I hear is a pop and loud static. Had a similar problem with my Incredible 1.

I stil have the issue even when taking off the case.
I guess im one of the very few with no issues at all.
I actually bought a set of those "beats by dre" headphone sets and it fits perfectly. Also works just fine with my subwoofer at work

Bought this and it's been working great. http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10218&cs_id=1021802&p_id=5577&seq=1&format=2
Fit's snuggly in the jack, even with my Otterbox case on.
I also have iBeats by Dr Dre and it fits quite well into my DInc 2.
My brother and I have similar problems with the audio jack. My headphones will fit in but if the cable wiggles I loose connection. The audio stops and I have to unplug and replug the them back in. It makes it so I can't have the phone in my pocket when listening to headphones. I have called Verizon and they said they were not aware of any known issues like this. They sent me a new phone to see if that resolved the problem. I am hoping we got some out of a bad batch...
This issue combined with the lack of root makes me want to sell the phone and get a X2.
No issues with mine either, I have been using it in the gym for the past two weeks and plug into the tape deck adapter in the work truck with no problems
So I called Verizon the other day to explain my problem with the headphones disconnecting after the cord wiggles a little. Their answer was to send me a replacement phone. I agreed and the next day the replacement arrived at my doorstep. Tested the headphone jack on the replacement device and got the same results. After calling Verizon back I waited on hold for an hour while they attempted to duplicate the problem on their end. Their solution was to use headphones without a "L" shapped bend in the connector. They offered to buy me a new pair of headphones so I agreed. I placed my order Amazon today and the Verizon tier 2 level tech will be calling me back Monday to take the charge off my bill. Figured this information may be handy to someone. Good luck!
I understand this is not a fix for a design flaw in the phone but its still a free pair of headphones.
I had the same problem with the lead in my car. I realized the jack was longer than the one on my headphones so I filed the tip off of it w/ a metal file. It seems to work better now.

I tested with a set of Blackberry "L" shaped headphones+mic and they were fine. I wiggled them and spun them and they never lost connection.

[Q] Galaxy s2 headset controls

I've been using the OEM headset that came with this phone and for one they are quite good for headphones that come with the product.
My question is does anyone know the controls for the headset? So far from using it I know that the main button pressed once is for mute/play/answer calls and if you double press it quickly it will skip to the next track (but you have to do it correctly or sometimes it won't do anything ).
Anyone else know the other control settings?
that's pretty much it AFAIK
if there are other features, then i've not used it that far
Wow, these are surprisingly very good headphones, and the controls actually work.
Thanks man, totally forgot we even got headphones with our phones.
Btw, if you hold down the top side of the "clicker thing", it raises volume slowly, if you hold the bottom end it lowers it. not the best control, but its in addition to what you think we had.
yes, i was very surprised this time as well, being a long time Samsung customer, this is the first time they packed in Quality Premium headphones with their phones

yea, my Samsung Vibrant came with reaaaalllyyy bad headphones (iphone type, basically, maybe even worse) so I didn't even look to check if there were headphones with the GS2
this is great news for me, i've been trying to replace my last ear buds and my latest purchase were these over ear Sony MDR V6s. they are AWESOME headphones but my first pair of quality over ears, and they might be a bit over doing it for what I need 'phones for, so I was gonna return them and get some earbuds again.
lucky for me i saw this topic and discovered we have decent earbuds with the phone + the controls are just an added bonus.

So far we can change the volume, answer/end calls, skip a song.
Anything else (playback a song with 3 clicks?)? Also, does anyone find the controls to be spastic at times (sometimes they work correctly, other times it lags a bit)?
is there the same functionality with headsets made for iphones (but not made from apple)? i have a really good set of sony's that fit my ears better than the ones that came in the box.
Damn my phone box did not had any headphones nor it mentions it on the box

Thanks for the info on double click and volume control (I'll have to try that). I've seen people complain about the headphones, but I was quite happy with them. The noise canceling is quite powerful as I can't hear much of anything else when I've got them on. I'm not used to $200+ headphones, so perhaps my standards are low, but I've been very happy with them.
help needed!!!!!!!!!
hello everyone..
my problem is my rabit, i put my headset on the table and i went out. whn i came back my headset was in several pieces, my rabit eaten it up.. all i want to say.. from where can i have the orignal samsung sgs2 headset.. i cant find them here in my country (pakistan) sadly..
can anyone help me in that case..????
Any handsets ordered after dec 12th from tmobile (i.e. the white galaxy s2) will not receive the headsets.
Its really stupid as I didn't get one

1. is this with an htc phone or the hercules?
2. are these just any old oem htc earbuds i could buy on ebay?
Lol at the rabbit.
its time to eat it mate.
They are on ebay everywhere, and rather cheap.
Got my phone on valentine's day, did even come with a headset... USB cable and that was that. Picked up a cheap'o at Wallymart... works fine.
First time, long time...Lurking for a while, not posted until now...
Anyway, my phone came with nothing but the wall charger and cable - maybe some booklets. I got my junk at T-Mobile and I asked about headphones. The chick there said it didn't come with any...But because she had a nice rack I just went with it and here I am. Looking at ROMS, but wandered into this section and thought I would throw in my 2 bits.
I have been using the headphones that came with my Sony MP3 player and they sound ok. I bet some quality ear buds would do my ears justice but I am too cheap and my ears are too deaf. Maybe in the future, we'll see.
these headphones sound great but mine already broke. there is chord stress around the connector and now i only get sound out of one earpiece and not both. great sound but not very durable.

[Q] To anyone with Bluetooth headphones

I bought the One X because the bluetooth performance of the Sensation was pathetic, and worryingly it seems the X has the same problem somehow.
I find that when wearing my Plantronics Backbeat 902 headphones that the connection is broken by something so simple as turning my head away from the pocket (front top jacket). I can hold the phone in my hand and simply pinch the top corner next to the camera and SIM slot to totally kill the connection.
At first it seemed that it must be the headphones getting old because how could the One X have a problem so widely known from the previous flagship? Well my Galaxy Tab 8.9 has no such problem. I can hug the tab as much as I want and just TRY to kill the signal, it will not happen. I can walk two rooms away and keep listening to music but the One X fails even a half meter from me if I turn the wrong way.
Can anyone else verify this behaviour? It is not that I want it to be the case, perhaps mine is just broken (odd because the screen/battery seem fine!) but if HTC have failed on another antenna then I will very much want a refund because two flagships in a row off contract is just too much to forgive!
Hi,
One X and Samsung HS3000 - I have found that connection stays mostly good, with maybe one or two tiny glitches per song - perfectly listen-able, and not as bad as what you describe, but not as good as I would have hoped - I am going to see if it is due to using extreme quality spotify downloaded tracks I'm playing (since the HS3000 is aptX it should stream at that kind of bitrate). I'll try lower bitrate and see if that makes a difference.
seems to work fine with Nokia BH-505 but i got cut off around 10m away.
Tried with an iPod Touch and it's about the same distance.
With Sennheiser MM400, I get perfect reception, in a leather case, in my pocket however I turn my head. In open air I get around 10 metre range. Maybe your bluetooth antenna is defective. If it's in your pocket make sure the screen faces inwards to your body. Also the receiver in your headphones could be on either side, so switching pockets may help.
Don't forget, other devices may appear to have greater range if they are transmitting at a lower quality than the One X. Also, I guess it could be that some headphones struggle to cope with higher bit rates if they don't have much buffer memory.
I'm blown away by bluetooth stereo quality compared to my sensation. My headphones had been sitting gathering dust until now.

Thanks very much for the replies, that helps a lot. I cannot believe this but it is the phone.
I remembered I have a PS3 headset by Sony, never failed me. I just called my girlfriend and from the distance of my hand to my ear while sitting down - not even holding at arms length - I can KILL the signal by pinching the corner where the front camera is.
I love this device, it is truly exceptional. But two HTC flagships in a row that I paid for outright have failed in the thing I use daily. I do not think I can face trying repair this time. Never helped my Sensation Bluetooth.
So that's two headsets by two brands, both work perfectly with any other device (and a Nexus S) but the two HTC phones just die when I use them.
Coincidence probably but after this much money, I am going to try to get my money back. Even paid for two years accidental damage warranty this time. Really quite unhappy about this now..
Again, thanks for the feedback.

Overly. Though more specifically right now, no. Which is why I can say a Samsung telephone or tablet work with the Plantronics or Sony headsets where the Sensation and One X do not. Same location, would have to be super specific interference.
I ride to and from work 6 days a week, and often between. This is why I use A2DP headphones for music or podcasts, sometimes calls. The amount of ground I cover should rule out any localised problems.
The most bizarre thing I can say is that out the box it seemed to be perfect, I was relieved. Since 2 weeks or so it has just dropped into a near non functional state. I would willingly say the power in my house was at fault but that has left so many other devices alone, including my girlfriends iPhone 4 and Nexus S.
I also tinker with tech a lot, just not down at the electronics level, so right now I feel I have tried everything (again) and been as good to the device as I could be, and just really, really unlucky.
Evidentially not all units are at fault so I will not play that stupid card of "HTC Can't make phones!" that some do when they have an issue, but you must understand I feel pretty ripped off nonetheless by now!
pleased I found this thread as I also seem to have the exact same problem. I have a fairly old Sony Bluetooth stereo headset that I used with my desire without any issues, with my one x if I move more than a metre away or place my hand between the devices they stutter and stop. I hate to think my phone is faulty as it seems fine in all other respects and reading the other stories that is fairly rare at the moment. I am happy to try other headsets as this one is quite old but if it is definetly a phone issue the sooner I sort things the better. does anyone have suggestions on things to try

Not specifically, but if you do try something new (mine are also old - but work perfectly with other devices) please do report back. I'd love to keep this phone but a repair will invalidate my option for refund.
HOX on 1.2.9 and no issues at all, I'm using it alongside the HS3000 and connection is rock solid. Phone in pocket, and HS3000 clipped to my shirt. Even maintains a solid connection whilst using the London Underground.
However was in PC World and had major interruptions due to the various invisible signals in that store.
Generally it's fine, streaming via Spotify using Extreme Quality and via Poweramp.

I am slightly curious to see if the different BT revisions are at play - but that is super hard to work out.
Both my headsets are 2.1 devices, Sensation was 3.0 and One x is 4.0. The phones that worked properly are 2.1+EDR. But the Galaxy tab is 3.0 and works perfectly. So...

It should be backwards compatible. But you got 2 headsets and tested on various devices so the BT in the phone might not be all that.

It's 1.29.x.x but yeah. I did wonder if that was at play, forgot to ask what other people were running earlier since when mine was working properly it was 1.26 but I cannot place where the problem began as I was busy/sick/away.
UPDATE : ok tried in the same place with my old sony HBH DS970 headset and major cut out if i cover headset or top of phone or walk more than a metre away.
Tried exactly the same with my turtle beach px5 headset (which has blutooth obviously) and everything is much better walked 5 metres no problems, covered phone with no real problem (did glitch just once).
I am running 1.28 T-mobile branded so now need to narrow down if certain types of profile or headset brands are the problem.
Pity I really like my sony headset

Thanks, adding some interesting details there.
so next question....can anyone recommend some cheap (£50ish) portable headset that works well with HTC one x and sound reasonable.
Would love to help you out there but clearly not in the situation. I was also looking into a new set with Apt-X (as the X supports it) but settled on none before realising the phone was a bust unit.
No problems with my HOX as well and i use 2 headsets (depends which one is charged) : Plantronics and Nokia.I don't have any problems with them so far and i keep my phone preety far from the headset.
I find that with my Creative WP-350 headset and my phone in my jean pocket, if I put my hand in my pocket over my phone I get the occasional break in the connection but that's the only situation is happens and is fairly avoidable.

HTC earphones stops working after using them for a while!

My HTC earphones won't output audio to my left plug.
This is the third pair I've gone through as all the previous earphones had the same fault. And it's always the left plug that stops working.
Are the HTC branded earphones really that bad?! I'm going to buy myself some quality earphones than wait once again a week to get another pair of soon to be faulty earphones.
Has this happened to someone else?
I would be inclined to think that this is connector problem, not the ear plugs. I have used the original plugs for just over a year with no problems whatsoever.

Just tested a bunch of other earphones, all of them work.
Something is wrong with the plugs because they work sometimes if held in a special way. My father pointed out that it could be a fault that occurs while the phone is in the pocket. However I never put my phone in my pocket while listening to music.

I don't think it will be the phones, try some pure alcohol or similar cleaning fluid on earbud jack and phone socket
Interesting, I had the exact same thing. I just ordered a new pair off amazon about 3 weeks ago. They were working perfect one day then the next time I went to use them the left one didn't make the slightest sound at all

Headphone Jack Problem?

I tried plugging in an aux cable last night, and I couldn't get it to go all the way in. If I pushed it hard enough, the sound would come through the speakers but as soon as I let go, it disconnected. I tried a few different pairs, and it seems there's something preventing the 3.5 mm jack from being inserted all the way. I tried it with and without my Rugged Armor case, too. Anyone else have this issue? Might have to take it in, but with the Pixel XL being in short supply I really don't want to go without a phone
Just rma it
I gave it quite a bit of pressure. I didn't wanna break it, lol. I shouldn't have to push it in that hard though, just wondering if this was a universal issue or is it an isolated incident

Hi Chris,
It appears I am having the same, or nearly identical issue. I tried using my aux cord, as I normally do nearly every day, on Wednesday and it wasn't connecting properly, giving some weird feedback through the output (or no output at home) and thought it was an issue with the aux to cassette (very possible with the high use and mechanical failures).
At home I tried with headphones, and I could not get a full connection. The device stopped playback of the music as it always does when it detects some input, but there was no output, and at times google now would be activated or the volume down would be activated, but this headphone had no control on it whatsoever, so some sort of short/feedback was emulating a volume control.
Talking with project fi now about my options...still haven't sold my 6p yet so I could still use as a backup, but what a hassle...
I've never had this problem before. Could it be lint? I can't look inside and tell, and I don't have tweezers small enough to reach in.

If you take it into a bestbuy and go to the Samsung reps they'll take a look at it for you and tell you if there is lint or not and get it out for you I know that they're Samsung reps but they help with any Android device lol

No need, went to one of the phone service kiosks in the mall and they used tweezers to pull out a sh-t load of lint. Looked like a magic trick, neither of us could believe it.
Take a toothpick and press towards the bottom, if it's spongy, it's probably lint. Use a bright light to look inside.
A good sucking of the head jack should clear up any clogs..
I actually had the same problem (Pixel XL and I could not plug in my headphone jack all the way). I received the XL on 10/20, but had yet to use my headphones until this past weekend. It seems like this might be a common problem because when I called the Google Pixel Support, they immediately transferred me to Project Fi support and the girl I was speaking with immediately began the process of sending me a new phone (this was on Sunday 11/28). I received the new phone today (11/30) and everything works fine with the new phone and headphone jack.
I have this issue with the Google Pixel. I just got the device yesterday and when plugging it into aux cord in vehicle the sound was distorted. I tried the next time I got into car and it doesn't go in all the way. I went home and tried multiple pairs of headphones and they don't fit into headphone jack 100%. It goes in most of the way but stops at the top and doesn't hold in place. I called Google support and am waiting on a callback.
I had the exact same issue. A bit of canned air worked for me!
