Looks like a great option for the price, given the 2Gb of RAM.

Kind of Old School with the RED DIsplay, I had a watch like that eons ago and it does look groovy.:good:

Geekbuying list 2GB of RAM in the specs however the Kodi System Info screen shows a max of 1GB. Makes me wonder if it'll really be 2GB.
Edit: looks like it will actually be 2GB

There has been an update.

Hi anyone know where i can get firmware for this as the one i have just keeps rebooting after 5 mins

R-BOX Android 5.1.1 RK3229 Update
Well further on this little media player is turning out OK,
There is an OTA update that appears to take forever to complete and will do a few resets and weird stuff until its fully downloaded.
Then applying the update it does a few more resets, not to sure why but after it all said and done the box is stable and working well, it's no speed demon but will make a fairly good media streamer.
Keep on forcing the update until its complete I found.
A few Images of what's going
No Red Clock due to the colour of Bezel on front but looks pretty good
Whats in the box
What Ports etc we have
A bit of a look inside
Wifi and Ethe net performace
Look at the GUI
A few basic performance test for those that like numbers.

Does anyone know if this box is better than the 1st Amazon fire Tv on performance? Thanks

I'd say it's a bit worse than the FTV gen 1. It's usable, though, and it is prerooted and has the play store installed.
I was able to install Amazon Underground and then the Prime Video app.
The real issue I'm having is with reboots. In Kodi, library updates consistently trigger a reboot but eventually complete. Very annoying, though. If you add a USB device with it plugged in, it will often decide it wants to restart - so swapping keyboards in and out is not advised.
Audio over HDMI is pretty bad compared to the FTV. I have it purportedly set to bitstream, but that doesn't look to be working. There's an SPDIF out that I'll try - I have a couple of cheap (but more expensive than the r-box!) d/a converters. There's also an a/v out that I'm going to look into just pulling audio with.
So, what do I mean by pretty bad: I run HDMI into an Oppo 103 player, then feed the analog outs from that to a multichannel integrated amp that drives a set of Thiel full range speakers and a sub.
The system will output 5.1 audio in bitstream mode, which has lots of dropouts and when it's not dropping out, it often sounds like people are speaking from inside a toilet.
Mixing down to 2 channel sounds just about as bad.
I'm trying to get the update now, but it's really ticking me off. The wifi on the unit isn't very good so I feed it from an ethernet handoff - which works for everything EXCEPT the stupid update app.
The only route I know of to get the system to treat wired ethernet as if it were wifi requires that I be able to run Xposed, and running Xposed requires flashing from recovery.
The stock recovery is promising, in that it supports an update from ADB, but it's not coming up as an ADB device.
I will try getting the Xposed installer on an SD card - that may be readable in recovery but there was no option for it when I rebooted into recovery without an SD card in the system.
I'd be much happier if I could find a firmware for this pup online - shipping a device with root active and a recovery is great, but with no visible option to recover in a pinch I'm a little concerned. (Of course, the recovery partition may be a viable source for a recovery as well.)

R-BOX Android 5.1.1 RK3229 Update
Update June 16th
This is after OTA update has been installed
Has been mentioned and also noted here the unit can reset while streaming over ethernet (few hours) does not appear to do so over Wifi,
The Ota Update can and will do a few resets I found using ethernet.
At a guess using WIFI this may not happen. ?
The Kodi Installed is bloated, suggest SPMC or ZDMC

firmware update
There was another OTA update today.
I just used wifi only to update went 100% no reset.
I can see they have added an Off icon to the Task Bar and some improvements in Kodi

thanks for posting the link. Now if only the adb flash process worked. Getting the thing to power on with the USB active is a challenge, and I have yet to get the usb component recognized after booting it into recovery and issuing the write image from adb command.
The recovery doesn't seem to know that it might want to look at the sd card.
the computer tools for a recovery are in Chinese and without the USB device being seen in the recovery, I'm not optimistic they'll work.
There may be a way to create a bootable SD card, I'd give it more of a try but my laptop can't read my card reader, has to wait until I get to a better system.

looks as if in conjunction with the .IMG file in the "PC Upgrade" the create-sdcard scripts may work.

2 issues:
- on my windows box, win764 bit, the ADB driver never heats up. I do get the r-box class device, but no ADB
- the batch tool crashes once I load the upgrade image. I'll try again after using usb 1 to connect to, and possibly it will be happier if the device is attached? The ini file isn't loading, and the display is all in Chinese as a result.
The good news is the SD card tool shows the box could be booted from an SD card at least in theory. Unfortunately, basing the card on the sdboot_3288 files and the rk3229 upgrade results in a hang - but the device did attempt to boot from the sdcard, so an sdboot for the rk3229 card is worth a run.
I continue to have the crash after loading the .img file and the no ADB drivers when I spun up an old XP virtual machine. I don't have physical hardware that runs a 32 bit OS in the house.
I will try finding an older release of the tool - one version of the tool can't even try installing an ADB driver, one release does, so perhaps the batch tool is similarly of varying quality from release to release.

Using win10 64bit here,
You could try running as administrator,
I have seen usb ports go silly when drivers are loaded for some devices
Check to see if you have any unknown devices in your device manager,
Uninstall then refresh may pickup driver ok.

Success!
V 1.8 of the batch tool worked great for me to flash the system image, dialogs
were in English and the file was read.
https://androidmtk.com/download-rockchip-batch-tool
On the geekbuying site, they call out a specific release of the driver installer - it works, and as far as I could see, the one in the bundle with the 1.7 tool did not work.
Unfortunately, the Xposed framework doesn't support this box well - you install it, and it boots, but it looks as if the launcher doesn't work properly afterwards. So getting the OTA over the wired network won't work for now.
The first couple of times Kodi tries indexing my library, the box locks up and restarts, but I suspect it'll eventually complete as it did the first time I set it up.
I'll do more audio testing this week.
The rebooting mystery is solved, for me, at least. The CPU was sitting at 96 degrees during a reindex.
I flipped the box upside down and blew in through the vent. The CPU cooled off.
I pulled it open, pulled off the heatsink and the thick pad of adhesive holding it in place, and replaced that with CPU compound. I've tied the sink back in place for the time being, and I'm seeing temps of 93 c. A slight improvement.
I think thermal management for this system is going to be a real issue, fortunately, simply turning the box so that the LED light is upside down will help quite a bit.
I have a bunch of small aluminum sinks and once this test run is over will probably slap those in as well, but I'm also going to look for a cpu throttling utility on the play store as I don't have a USB fan free at the moment.

thermal management of the r-box
After chasing temperature as a root cause for a bit, I find that there is one particular music folder the app cannot parse.
I tested the files in that folder, and it looks as if they were corrupted when they were copied in. I think that rather than CPU overheating was the root cause of the restarts. I did feel better having redone the heatsink. Since the case is plastic, if you have one of these and want to keep using it, you might want to drill a few holes in the "top" and lave the box placed vertical with the vents open on both sides - that was what gave me the best CPU temps.
For me, the audio is still terrible. Frequent brief dropouts passing bitstream over HDMI.
I will probably get a firetv stick for the second set, or a used gen 1 firetv box, and ditch this - but for 35 dollars, not a terrible learning experience.

Ok thanks for firmware ive now managed to flash it and get box working again. One question though what version of kodi do i install on this device? I just tried updating with arm version but it wouldn't install? Trying to update to latest version of kodi?

3G's USB port seems to work with everything

Hi,
In january/february, i bought a USB keyboard with an USB adaptater to use it with my tablet.
I tried to plug it in the 3G's usb port, it did'nt worked, and because last week I broken it, and I updated my tab to ICS, I tried to plug my keyboard in the 3G port, and it worked !
Maybe it's because of ICS ?
Also, my keyboard has also an usb hub, it works too !
Mine seemed to work from the the start with Rom version: 3.2.69 and that's on 2 different G9 101, however others result have varied and it seems a bit hit and miss to say exactly what's going on.
I know there are 2 different versions of the 10" G9 - A101S and A101H , I've not dug too deep into it and I'm not 100% and what the differences are.
I think ICS generally improved the Usb Host support/integration which is always welcome.
Now I just need a large bag to transfer all these extra devices for my "portable tablet".
Mine won't see USB drives/camera cards formatted to FAT32. No big deal.
Actually, it did connect with my phone and its 16GB microSD card, so I'm happily mistaken.
From the ICS "firmware" update change log:
Archos 80/101 G9
Firmware changes
Version 4.0.4 - March 8th, 2012
Initial Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 firmware release
MediaCenter Video: support for MKV3D on TV with automatic switch to best 3D mode
MediaCenter Video: allow to disable system notifications in video player
MediaCenter Video: collection of VOB files from DVD are now gathered into a single movie item
MediaCenter Music: integrate Music control panel in Lock Screen
MediaCenter info dialog: allow to edit the name used for performing the Movie and TVShow online search
File Manager: display a notification when file copy continues in background
File Manager: improved drag and drop support
File Manager: new option to prevent indexing of some storage/sdcard folders by multimedia library
Applications: more robust video conferencing support (Google talk, Skype etc.)
USB file transfer: a samba server is now activated on the tablet when using USB network tethering for easier file transfer on non Windows based hosts [Samba for "non Windows"??? Something bass-ackwards about that ...]
Archos widgets: new USB network tether widget [Anyone know if this means it will tether off a phone this way ala older Archos models like the 5 or 43 , or is this meant to "share" its internet connection (however it would obtain it, even if not "3G-enabled" - which seems useless)]
External Keyboard: french layout has been expanded to handle AtlGr keys for special symbols
Accessories: Xbox gamepad support
Maybe I shoulda hung on to the new 80 I bought a week ago, and returned after trying it out for a few days. The inability to get the back/3G USB port and MTP tools to work was a big factor in my return decision (along with no network tether option as the 5 and 43 had, and the reality check on the initial Staples web page claiming 1GB RAM - hope springs eternal...)
FWIW,
R
@rokkywoof I think that it's for the micro usb port, because this oen is meant to be an OTG micro usb port, and the original usb port is just for the 3G, but maybe they failed and applied the stuff to the 3G's port?
@Telyx/trevd wow that's strange !
I saw that the A80S (A101S) are the archos with flash memory (8 or 16gb), and the A80H/A101H are the archos with the Hard drive (H for Hard drive )

Is this true? This is the main reason why I was planning on getting this tablet this week because it is (or so I thought) that would have been able to transfer raw files from my CF cards to the internal hd, and backed up on an external HD. I shoot about 300gig a week while on the road.

It works fine... just have to turn on the "3G Stick" port, then wait a moment before plugging the camera, phone, thumb drive, card reader, etc. in. One camera connects like a thumb drive (mount the "drive" manually and open the folder in the file explorer), the other launches the Gallery app to allow me to import pictures.

3G's USB seems to work with nearly Everything
Hi @ll,
I also tried to get USB devices to work, no problem with USB-Sticks, but USB-HDD's (selfpowered) seem not to Work (neither on Stock image nor on Cyanogenmod). The HDD starts turning but Android doesn't mount it. Can someone give me some pointers?
My Specs:
Archos G9 80 Turbo HDD with an USB-HDD (USB 3.0 (should be backwards compatible)) by Toshiba
Thanks
I would bet the tablet is not able to supply enough power to actually start the USB HD up.
Remember that usb port was designed to be used with Archos' 3G cell stick and really wasn't meant to be hooked up to other things.
If the port is enabled, there is allways power for the hdd, also for a stick a mouse. But some keybords may not work (I don't figure it out).
The app USB OTG Helper will help to mount the hdd/stick.
I used a friends powered usb hub (dlink dub-h7) and was able to use both my keyboard and mouse with my tablet unfortunately my usb thumb drives dont work when attached to the usb hub however they do work when attached to the hub I didnt have my powered usb hard drive with me to test

usb2lan-adapter?
Hi,
Just bought a G9 101 turbo to play with.
stock 4.0.25 ROOTED flashed and it's hanging nice on my tv.
Can anyone tell me/give me advise if there's any usb-lan adapter that works?
Would love to use a cable instead of the wifi...
THANKS!

Pros and Cons of AFTV after using for 3 weeks.

So i had the AFTV up and running for about 3 weeks and there are some great things but few annoying issues are out waving all pros in my view. I only use it for xbmc as media center. I am curious to hear how other are using and feel about it.
Pros
1) Really great hardware and Spec for $70 which is what i paid and it is hard to find anything out there with these spec, plus remote for this price.
2) xbmc is super fast so are other update, everything loads up fast.
Cons:
1) The amount of storage capacity that is actually available for usage after installing few things is 3.5gb and i don't have single game installed.
2) Recently noticed wifi and wired connection issued, unable to connect or connected with a problem. Try rebooting AFTV many times but didn't work until i rebooted my router. All my other devices were working fine except AFTV.
3) unable to view sideload apps under apps menu.
4) unable to actually shut down the box, beside unplugging the power supply
5) Remote is great but gosh it would have been awesome if it was an universal remote that would control your tv with basic functions channel and volume button instead of voice search.
6) Unable to actually use the USB as external storage, my AFTV out of the box from amazon had 4.85gb free space from (5.49 gb) and the box it self has 8gb. Yes i know you can increased your storage after you have rooted your fire tv and i have rooted but amazon has just put one too many blocks for average user.
7) Forcing auto updates to AFTV and not letting user decided if they want to update or not.
8) i am always scared something will go wrong with AFTV since so many folks have managed to brick the fire tv and there is no way to fix it.
Personally for xbmc i love my Raspberry Pi B, sure it slower and not sexy as AFTV but never has to worry about bricking it and i have this running in my living room running for over 1 year with any issues except i may have to reboot is once or twice a week cuz some addon takes for ever and i just don't have patient. It plays 1080 and 3d movies flawless once you run this things on 8gb USB 3.0 with 0 cache setting.
If Amazon goal was to use the AFTV just for there echo system than this leads me believe with future firmware updates they will remove the ability for user to side load apps. Anyone else see this as possibility?
Thank you
I have a Fire TV, a Flirc, and a vintage MX-500 universal remote clone.
The Fire is un-rooted, have OTA turned off, and I have side-loaded FiredTV, Firefox, Adobe Flash, and Kodi with 1Channel, IceFlims, and Genesis. (Two out of the three I don't even use.)
Pros
2) I've had many streaming devices. This is far and away the best hardware.
Cons
1) Did I read another post by you that the box is actually complaining about running out of storage?
EDIT: Nope. Wasn't you.
2) If you can't resolve this as a network or setup or ISP issue, I'd be concerned that your box might be defective.
3) FiredTV.
4) Flirc for sleep/wake. The majority of streaming devices are expected to stay on and either go to sleep or deep sleep. That way they wake up instantly and can accept (unauthorized) OTA updates.
5) I'm sending back a Harmony 650. But if I hadn't already had what Remote Central says is one of the best they'd ever tested, I might have kept it.
6) True. But not a show-stopper for me.
7) Turn off OTA updates. This isn't unique to the Fire TV.
8) Only happens when you dink with it. :cyclops: Not really a con though, is it?
I have a Pi B. I also have a Neo X5 and just gave my sister a Roku 3. The performance of those devices pales significantly when compared to the Fire TV. IMHO. Of all the devices I've had over the last several years, barring any defects, all were functional but useability on some was questionable. The Fire TV stands head and shoulders above the crowd in performance. Now if Amazon would only get their head out of their posterior and sell a more open device maybe "with special features," I think they'd take the market by storm. It's already their #1 selling item.

The Ainol windows 8.1 mini pc has an modern looking aluminum case witch doubles a great heatsink (No modding required) and measures 15cm x 10.5cm x 1.4cm and weighs about 12 ounces.
The device looks & feels like its of high end quality and is very well made "That well made i cant open it up as of yet" but as soon as i find a way into it i will upload some photos of the guts. This rely feels like a premium device.
The front of the device has a small power button two full sized usb ports & a star shaped power indecator light,On the rear of the device we have a mini USB 3 port,a micro SD card slot,Mini HDMI output port,a 3.5mm head phone jack port & a 5v DC power port.
In brief
Ainol Windows 8.1 Mini PC TV Box uses a 64 bit Intel Bay Trail-T Z3735D quad core CPU, pre-installed with Windows 8.1 operating system, with 2GB DDR3L RAM and 32GB Emmc ROM, supports Bluetooth 4.0 and wifi. It comes with a USB 3.0 interface and two standard USB 2.0 interfaces. This Mini PC is also a power bank with a 7000mAh battery and can charge for other mobile devices.
Setup
The first thing i did when i got the ainol was to create a backup recovery to a USB stick using this guide for the pipo (Thanks go to Bob for putting this guide together)
http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?22092-First-thing-you-should-do-with-the-Pipo-X7
I then let windows do its thing & update everything after several restarts more updates & 3 hours latter i was ready for the next step.
One thing I will say is for some reason the windows updating processing screen is in Chinese:face
Thanks to Trebor there's a fix to get rid of the Chinese writing at the start up ect

Then i made a system image backup by following the above guide guide (step3)
I also midified the boot.wim using this guide so my recovery was in english

After i had done all the above it was time to start playing,When it was fully charged to 100% i upplugged the power lead & iv played some films from a external HD powered by the ainol for just over 6.5 hours now & the battery is at 19%.The ainol is not even warm & I mean no heat at all thats using no external power surply just the built in battery.
Also iv just Installed kodi this runs great (IMO kodi runs better on windows than android)Easy to install & does what it should.
Below screen shot shows CPU temps after almost 3.5 hours of using kodi web streaming
Wifi speed test
Pc wifi download speed test 12 feet from router
Ainol wifi download speed test 12 feet from router
As you can see the download speed seams to drop on the Ainol more or less straight way I don't no whats coursing this maybe some interference from some other devices I have running.
Quick facts
Boot time is 12 seconds
shut down is 3 seconds
logitech c270 webcam works
64GB micro SD works
128GB usb Stick works
Samsung 1TB un powered HD works fine using just the ainol battery
I use an app on my android phone called unified remote to controll my ainol its very simply to use it has mouse & keybored input i highly recomend trying it

I just recently bought the same ainol mini windows 8.1 pc with the air mouse which works great. can you please explain whether you are getting audio out of the hdmi cable?
I am getting no audio at all from the hdmi cable and drivers etc are upto date according to the device manager with no yellow exclamation mark. I would really hate to plug in an av cable.
I really look forward to your experience with audio out via the hdmi cable. Please note all basics such as turn off mute, check tv/amplifier volume is up etc are all correct.

Hello there.
My Aniol did not come with a air mouse
The audio works fine for me with just using the HDMI lead I had to change nothing in the settings it worked fine out the box.
I have seen this on another intel tv box you may need to open Control Panel and go to the sound settings and change the default to the other output device.

I had to pay an extra $20 or so for the air mouse. What is really upsetting is that I have tried a number of things to get audio via hdmi out but nothing is working. There is also no other option in the control panel to change the default which is on the headphone jack which gives out sound.
I have tried installing drivers, restarting the mini pc with hdmi already plugged in etc etc but nothing is working. Do you have any other suggestions?

Iv lost sound now a few times I go to control panel/hardware & sound/sound
Play back tab
Select HDTV
Set as default
Apply
Also have you done the windows update mine took over 3 hours to insltall all the updates when I first got it
Windows update did begin yesterday although I might have shut down before everything installed. I will need to double check this.
As for the sound option in control panel, I do not get HDTV to show up at all. All I get is the first option in written in chinese
I can confirm after the update, everything is now working by selecting the tv under sounds in control panel.
Thanks heaps!
now if there was some way of just getting rid of this chinese text which appears when booting or installing certain stuff. I have changed language etc and cleared cache.

Hi all,
I just ordered one after reading your review.
I lost my big desktop about a year ago and have relied on my new Dell XPS 12 2 in 1. Its a nice laptop (or notebook, whatever they call these things today).
I had everything on my desktop, I really used it as a file server.
I was trying to save up money to get another large desktop with a lot of bays to hold all my hard drives and I wanted a PC that had at least 8 SATA version 3.0 ports built into the motherboard. My dead PC had 6 SATA version 1.0.
As of today, I still had the internal hard drives installed in the cage, that was inside the case.
It ran on 2 128GB SSD's setup as RAID 0 and 2 2TB HDD setup as RAID 1.
The SSD drives were setup as the System Drive, this thing booted in seconds, very fast.
The HDD drives were setup as my Data Drive, not as fast but well protected since they were mirrored using RAID 1.
The only thing that broke was the motherboard.
Oh, it had 8 or 16 GB of RAM (probably 8GB, my memory is shaky), running 64bit Windows 8.1 on a Quad Core CPU.
It wasn't the fast gaming machine, but it was good enough for me.
I had attached 2 24 inch monitors that had both HDMI and WVGA ports. The monitors were from HP and are able to be positioned in either Landscape (typical setting) and Portrait mode.
I don't know why I just didn't buy a new motherboard, maybe because it was about 6 years old.
Anyway, in the meantime, I found a backup of my DATA drives and purchased a 3TB HDD which I connected to my Asus RT-AC68U router that comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports, So the 3TB HDD is connected to one of the ports and the other port has my Dymo label printer. My other printers are wireless.
So that is my current setup and its OK the way its working but I niss having my desktop and miss using the large monitors. (I know I could hookup one monitor to the laptop, but I keep the laptop in another room.
But I do want access to the real DATA drives, that backup I used was old and some stuff is missing.
So tonight I purchased 2 different kinds of NAS devices. One cheapo ($60) which has 4 USB ports and one Ethernet port. Its supposed to allow the drives to be seen on the network.
The other NAS device is 4 drive capable housing by Buffalo, also pretty cheap ($189).
I guess I have to wait to see if either of these two work for me.
Then i came across your mention of this AINOL mini PC.
When searching for the NAS stuff, I thought I could just get a PC on a stick and attach some of the drives to it and make then shareable. A poor man's NAS system.
But when I saw this AINOL is was the only thing I found that came with USB 3.0 ports, all the others only had USB 2.0 ports (very old out of the gate).
The last thing I noticed is that this sucker is portable and battery operated! Wow, the possibilities! And able to recharge my smartphone!
It has the right amount of ports to be very useful.
Now to end this, how fast is this thing anyway.
Is it an Intel Atom chip? If it is those are deadly slow for real work, but using it as a file server maybe not so bad?
How is it to really use?
Will I be totally disappointed? I do recognize it will never be as fast as what I had, but if its as good as my laptop (this Dell XPS 12 2 in 1, which comes with an Intel i7 chip 64bit).
I am going to come back here when it arrives to follow your instructions on how to make an emergency recover image and an of the other suggestions you listed here.
And yes, I have plenty of Bluetooth keyboards with mouse combos.
I'm not sure what else I should plan on having or doing before it arrives.
Thank you!
Rob
P.S. I ordered it before I noticed your 10 percent coupon, oh well!

Well welcome to the Ainol club..I don't think you will be disappointed with the speed at all im very happy with mine I just love the fact its portable has a built in battery that will last for at least 5 or 6 hours & has a 10 second boot up time..
I got one as well, but the problem which I found the hard way is that, it appear I can't boot any USB media, linux or Win7/8. So it just locked to the half-chinese Win 8 w/ Bing that's already on the drive. It's just slightly better than a door stop at this point. If somebody found a way to get around that it would be great.

Just change the language settings to english.
Looks like there are a few drivers which have been installed in chinese, these may be able to be reinstalled in english.
Its fully functional win8.1, it probably has a locked bootloader like the surface so probably tough boot off anything other than the stock OS.
"win 8.1 with bing" is no different from standard win 8.1, but its free for OEMs.

can anyone confirm the usb 3 performance. Result posted by blinkone doesnt seems to be like a usb 3 speed
darn... nvm... just found out that Z3735F doesnt have usb 3 ((
Hi, I just received mine but it does not work. It simply starts the booting process, but it never gets to actually load Windows and make the whole thing usable. It just shows a black screen after the EFI loading screen and it doesn't get past that. Has anyone any idea about what to do in these cases? I tried resetting the PC without luck; enabling or disabling fast boot and secure boot (they were disabled by default, by the way) did not work.

Sure, it's simple to do if you read and understand Chinese. Try doing it when you're staring at a jumble of Chinese characters. I just finished the setup of my Ainol completely in Chinese -- what a frustrating process that was! I wish I'd taken a crash course in Mandarin first.
Hi everyone, I also purchased this mini PC. I'm curious if it's possible to install linux on this box? It the BIOS similar to that of a PC? Could I plug an external drive into the USB 3.0, and then install Ubuntu or something like that on it? I was thinking of using this as a little mini server.

Problem with wireless connection
I got my Mini M8s II on 14th July, the WiFi is not working at all, youtube videos pausee, stop or freeze a few seconds later, with kodi, watching movies or TV shows (exodus, salts, Phoenix) is the same problem, get stopped suddenly. I tried changing settings modem Wpa2, wpa+wpa2, wep and the only setup that working is set in Open (no protection) but that is not cool.

Thanks for your experience. Have you tried it with a wired connection? Hope you get it fixed.
Wired it work fine, but the TV Box is far away from my TV.
Again, for the price, this seems to be the better one for me. I hope that the bad wifi can be worked around with an external antenna like the M8S (but I also had to apply a patched fw that someone created).
I need 2G of RAM (even without playing games doesn't take long before it slows down with 1G).
I need BT (headphones, mouse, keyboard)
missing is dual band wifi (would love to offload most of the wifi usage off of 2.4g)
one more USB port would be nice
longer power cord would be nice
external antenna would be nice
Does this box having Android 6 fix the problem where the audio drops every few seconds when passthrough is enabled?
got mine last week, but im having an issue with the language setting, it always changes back to chinese or something like that by itself even without restarting the device, despite that it has been working fine. is anyone having this issue too?
I'm a Chinese, I bought one in China, I do like the spec, exactly what I want,
but I got wifi connection problem too. I try to play movies shared from my PC, and the speed is very unstable, peak could be 3m/s, but 1 or 2 seconds later, it drops to 0, most of the time, speed is under 100k/s
I am asking the seller if there is any ROM update that could fix this problem, he/she said(about half an hour before) that he/she will ask the engineer
I am thinking whether to wait or to return it

They provided an update (rel. 2016-07-19) that fixes the WiFi issues: I get around 40 Mbit downstream easily over WiFi now...
They don't offer the update via OTA right now, it was online for short period but caused problems when downloaded, so they released it and people can copy it to the SD card.

To update:
Extract the 3 files (update.zip, factory_update_param.aml & recovery.img) to the SD Card (root of the SD card, no subfolder please ^^)
start the "update / backup" app on your box
select the update.zip and confirm
box will restart and install the new firmware
Language issue
I am also having the language reset issue.
Whenever I shut the box down after watching tv, the next time that I start the box, it starts with English and then reverts to Chinese after about 45 seconds.
This is a royal pain when you have to change the language back to English every time that you power on the box.
The other thing I've noticed is a long lag in Kodi when moving an external Logitech mouse or entering data with either the built-in or external keyboard.
It definitely stutters.
Otherwise, this would be a great box.
Any fixes for the above issues?
About 10 minutes after the box powered up for the first time, it has found july 4th firmware upgrade (small file about 14mb), then rebooted and almost immediately prompted for July 19th upgrade (430Mb if I remember correctly).
In the old days there was a "project" that had a ISO image of various video samples in all imaginable codecs on AVForums, but I can't find it anymore. Does anyone know if there is something similar with H265 and VP9 files as well? I would want to run through all of the codecs and verify what works and what doesn't.
thanks a lot!
I got OTA and updated my box, the stability feels better, but signal strenth is still not good enough. I tesed it beside router, and it's fast as expected, then put it back to my TV side, where there is a wall between, the speed is poor again. as reference, my phone, oneplus one, can have full wifi speed at the same position. I think Ihave to move my router to a better place
Has anyone found a working root for these S905X boxes yet? If anyone can make it happen I will gladly pay for it.
Does anybody know how to activate ADB via USB with this device? I tried connecting the box to my PC using a special USB cable (offering two Typ-A plugs) but the PC did not find any USB device. So no connection via USB. Without USB connection I cannot activate ADB support. Without ADB support it seems there is no way to have remote access (VNC, RDP etc.) to the box.

Why can't you activate ADB support? Or do you mean a specific support besides ADB debug in the developer options?

I used ADB over WiFi, I didn't even try to use USB because those boxes without an OTG port can usually just be reached via burning tool, for example...

- Unplug power and male USB from the box.
- Load burning tool on the PC
- Press the reset button, keep it pressed and plug in the male USB
- Keep the power lead out at the moment when you see it says on your PC "connected successful" in the burning tool
- Release the button and plug power in

Btw. burning & customization tool hopefully can be used again in the future when they manage to release an IMG of the firmware and not only ZIP files. -.-

Slow File Transfer Speeds

I am having issues with copying files being slow on my 5T. A small transfer either on the device itself, or from my laptop (running Fedora 27) to the phone takes forever. In the case of the computer it can't properly judge the estimated time of completion. I tried repairing SD card after flashing, but had no effect.
The weird thing is copying the 1.8GB FreedomOS 2.0.2 ROM (which I'm running) from laptop to phone transferred at "normal speed", but in other instances, copying just a few megabytes of files either takes forever, or never finishes. I was copying 14MB of V4A profiles from one directory to another on the phone, and after 16 minutes it never finished. As a separate test, I copied some music from my OP3 backup on my laptop to the phone, and was getting 10MB/sec. That is still ridiculously slow for USB3 as my external HD does ~125MB/sec. I even tried booting to TWRP recovery and copying files that way, but speeds did not improve.
The phone itself absolutely flies and have not seen a single stutter or lag, so something else is weird, and only specifically with copying files. Maybe something weird w/ disk i/o writes? Never had this issue on my OP3 or OPO.
EDIT: Tried my old Dash cable, same results. Attaching screenshot of transfer speed.
Windows (if thats what you are using) has never been able to properly judge completion time so thats not really much of an issue, but I have experienced some transfer issues today as well on Windows 10. I was making a backup of internal and when I initiated the transfer it would just say processing and stay at that indefinitely. I would have to unplug the phone to get it to do anything and then once unplugged is when it would change from processing to the transfer dialog coming up before aborting due to the unplugged device. It did this even after a restart of both computer and phone and was the first time I have experienced it with this device. I have never experienced it before with any other device on this PC.
Just tested on my work PC(win7 x64). Before installing the oneplus built-in driver, Even open up the internal storage window takes so long to finish scanning, and just like OP, transfering small files takes forever.
But after installing the driver, and re-plug the cable, things go normal. TRY THAT!!
I have same issue on my home desktop(win10 64bit), but the driver seams help just a bit not exactly like day&night difference on win7

Probably should've mentioned this in my OP but I'm running Linux on my laptop, specifically Fedora 27. As mentioned, I haven't had any transfer issues with previous phones or other USB devices. I don't have a Windows installation to further test, but interesting that installing the driver fixed your issues in Windows.

Have you checked at which speed the USB works on Fedora for your device? OP5T still has an USB 2.0 port so you should expect to see that.
I also facing the same problem. OnePlus ROM writing speed really slow. I have test both from Windows and MacOS to my OP5T it slower than than copy files to my iPhone5. I hope OnePlus update on their ROM in the next devices I'm so disappointed while they use 6/8GB of RAM and latest processing.
I’m using Oreo beta in my OP 5t and KDE on top of Ubuntu 16.04. File transfer speeds have never been an issue for neither of my devices. (OP 5t and OP 3)
I created an 1 GiB test file with a command:
Code:
fallocate -l 1G test.img
I copied the file to my phone over USB and it took approximately 27 seconds. KDE progress bar was displaying 37 MiB/s, which seems to be pretty accurate as 1024MiB divided by 27 seconds equals ~38MiB/s.
I run the test over my 5Ghz WiFi as well and surprisingly it was faster than USB. I copied the same 1GiB file from my FTP server and it took less than 20 seconds. The speed was ~50MiB/s. A year a go I run the same test with my OP3 and it was slower than usb. The WiFi speed on OP3 was around 30-35MiB/s.
It’s significantly slower to copy many small files than one large one so that may explain the reason some of you are facing slow file transfer speeds.

I tried the same test as you, with similar results. However, when I try to copy about 1GB of mp3 files (average size of 5MB each), the file transfer drops to less than 500 kB/s.

For me. If I copy massive files its going to go really fast. If u copy ALOT of tiny folders with like 1/10th the size it will probably take longer. Like last time I wanted to transfer my twrp backup to my pc it was going to take so long I had to cancel it.
This goes with everything. Even with just my pc and moving files on my hdd.
But I get your point. That should be faster than that
Appreciate all the testing and analysis. Very similar to what I'm experiencing, fast transfer for a large file (ROM or GAPPS), but slower speeds for "normal"-sized files. The 1.1 Mb/s rates and below are pretty much what I see on Fedora 27 transferring to my OP5t, which is baffling since I had no trouble on my OP3 or OPO. Transfers to my USB 3.0 WD hard drive results in a steady 150MB/sec, so I know it's not an issue w/ anything locally. I think I'll open up a bug report w/ OnePlus and see what they say.

I did some more testing and it seems that I don't have any transfer speed issues. I copied an audio book folder containing many small mp3 files to my phone. The folder was 757,8MiB in size.
Ubuntu + KDE: 757,8MiB / 34 seconds = 22,3MiB/s
Windows 10: 757,8MiB / 37 seconds = 20,5MiB/s
I also tested SanDisk Ultra 32GB CompactFlash card and USB3 card reader and the copying took 18 seconds. (42,1MiB/s) So it was significantly faster but that was to be expected.
