Want a LBL Lollipop root method for the Xperia ZL? Keep reading. - Sony Xperia ZL

Hi all!
I'm happy to say that, thanks to iovyroot, and with a lot of help from zxz0O0, we managed to create a new root tool for the Xperia M2, EagleRootTool, meaning we don't actually need to use Kingroot anymore to root LBL devices under latest Lollipop firmware :victory:
However, since this root binary is compatible with (probably) any kernel built before December 2015, I thought of making the tool compatible with some other devices, like your ZL, since it's actually very similar to my device.
Unfortunately, since this tool's based on some kernel-specific addresses, to make it compatible with other devices like the ZL, I need them from every single variant.
I'm going to take for reference all models and firmware build numbers from XperiFirm.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- An already rooted device in 10.7.A.0.228 (10.7.A.0.222 might be compatible too) (it doesn't matter if it was rooted by Kingroot, or via UBL methods).
- A little of Android general knowledge: Usage of ADB (mainly).
- Patience.
DEVICES:
- C6503
- C6506
- C6502
HOW TO DO IT?:
Just open an ADB prompt and run a shell in it. Then, run the following commands, replacing the *location with storage/sdcard1 if you want to use your SD Card, or with data/media/0 if you want to use the internal memory.
Code:
su
cat /proc/version > /[COLOR="Purple"]*[/COLOR][COLOR="red"]location[/COLOR]/version.txt
echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict
cat /proc/kallsyms > /[COLOR="Purple"]*[/COLOR][COLOR="red"]location[/COLOR]/kallsyms.txt
(remember to hit enter after each line of the above :silly
Now upload those two files (version.txt & kallsyms.txt) wherever you want, or attach them in your comment, saying which model they're from, and I'll add the required offsets to support your device manually!

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a placeholder NOR Spam thread. I just want to help this device users to get them supported in a common Lollipop Xperia rooting toolkit, since this device won't get Marshmallow, and has a compatible kernel. If you, moderator or user, decide to close/report this thread, I may understand it, but think it twice before doing it.

@linuxct, Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party.

I can't integrate it - all of the data sections in the kallsyms are missing in the provided symbol table. As you can see, only T and R sections are available, and I've no idea why. Getting it from another device would result in exactly the same problem. I am currently investigating it.

Damn, I wish I could help...
What would be my second best option to root this, Kingroot? Sounds fishy to me...

Just make a PRErooted rom

[ROOT] [GUIDE] (OFFLINE) OTADelusion Online Root for Asus FonePad 7 / K00E / ME372CG

If you wish to follow the instructions in this post, you agree that -
* Your warranty is void.
* I do not offer any guarantees that this will work or that it won't cause any
bad side effects.
* You alone are responsible for any damages or other issues that may arise
directly or indirectly because of this.
This has undergone basic testing on multiple devices running supported ROMs, but
again, there are no guarantees. Use it at your own risk.
In particular, OTA updates have not been tested on rooted devices.
Introduction
What Is This?
The FonePad 7 has a very secure stock ROM that is not vulnerable to any known exploit. But fortunately for us, Asus introduced their own vulnerability in it, which we can take advantage of. This is a guide that will help you root your FonePad 7 using that vulnerability.
How Does It Work?
Overplayed, Cool-Sounding Version
OTADelusion exploits multiple critical security vulnerabilities in the over-the-air update mechanism employed by the FonePad 7 -
The update delta packages are delivered to the device through an unencrypted medium.
The device can be configured to use any DNS server and it does not verify DNS query responses.
The package verification process relies on an asymmetric key-pair whose private key is compromised.
A man-in-the-middle attack is performed while downloading an OTA update by forcing the device to use a rogue DNS server which directs the device to connect to a rogue web server. This web server serves malicious update packages with forged cryptographic signatures. These update packages are designed to install a permanent backdoor in the device, allowing the user full access to it.
Down-To-Earth Version
Someone at Asus forgot the 'S' in 'HTTPS'
Someone at Asus forgot to replace the test Android signing key with their own
1 + 2 = Pwnage
What Do I Need To Use It?
A FonePad 7 running a supported version of the stock ROM (check the section below for a list of supported versions)
A working Wi-Fi connection (this will NOT work on 2G or 3G)
Supported ROM Versions
Go to Settings -> About tablet and check the "Build number" field
3.2.2 - NOT supported. Upgrade to 3.2.4
3.2.4 - Supported (WW and TW)
5.1.6 - NOT supported. I need volunteers to help me test.
5.2.2 - Supported (WW)
5.2.5 - NOT supported. May be added in the future. Check this thread for updates.

Installation Instructions
Follow these steps -
Read the disclaimer at the top of this post.
Make sure you're connected to a WiFi connection, NOT 2G/3G.
Go to Settings -> About tablet -> System Update and check for updates.
When you see the update prompt, select "NO"
Go to Settings -> Apps -> scroll to the "All" tab -> CMClient
Press the "Force Stop" button
Press the "Clear Data" button
Repeat the above steps with DMClient in the Apps list
Go to Settings -> WiFi -> long press on your network -> Modify Network and follow these steps -
Set IP Settings to "Static"
Note down the values of DNS 1 and DNS 2 somewhere.
Set DNS 1 to <snip>
Make DNS 2 blank
At this point, your Internet connection will stop functioning correctly. This is intended and temporary.
Repeat step 3. If it shows an error, reboot and repeat this step.
Make sure you get an update called "OTADelusion".
Download and install the update.
After reboot, go back to WiFi settings and restore the previous values of DNS 1 and DNS 2.
You now have root. Enjoy! But also be careful - there is currently no way to de-brick this device if you screw up.

Running an update server costs actual money, so I won't be able to keep it running indefinitely. I expect to be able to keep it running through 2014 at least, but there are no guarantees. It can go offline at any time. The address mentioned may also change at times. This post will be updated if that happens. Server taken down because there is now an offline method.
Current Server Status: Offline
Thanks for the hard work man, hope you are able to solve the other versions as well. :good:
Hey, just a thinking. If Asus can update the "update" app, maybe you can too, and then send any updates (and modification) you want, no?
If it's possible, we have a big posibility in here i think

It's certainly possible, but a much cleaner solution would be to get a working recovery. The bootloader is locked, but it looks like it's not encrypted. There may be a way to make it accept a custom recovery.
But we need someone who's willing to take the risk of possible bricking and test the recovery on their device.
I think that it could be a good idea to open one of our devices, to see if there's some JTAG (or thing like that) to have a fully trustable backup option.

It hasn't been tested yet. I would suggest you don't, at least until somebody else confirms that it works.
I do suspect that there is some code in the OTA package that triggers a ROM verification in the bootloader, but I'm not sure.
Either way, if somebody's willing to take the risk, let me know. I can make a modified update package that should reduce the risk of bricking.
Hi, Dr. Psycho
Thank you for your quick reply.
I am using 5.2.2 firmware, so need to waiting for next rooting opportunity..
BTW, after rooting, if can't download upgrading package automatically, is there any way to flash the package manually (if i can download it from somewhere)?

The only way is to do what I'm doing with this guide. You'll need to run a fake DNS server and a web server and fool the tablet into downloading your package. If you're on the latest version of the stock ROM, you'll need to either patch the DMClient app or install a self-signed CA certificate (not through Settings, you'll need to copy it to /system).
This thread has a lot of information for those interested, especially in the last ten or so pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514714
EDIT: Just realized you might talking about official updates. Those will be downloadable and installable, but we don't know if it'll work. It might brick your device.
What I wrote above was for custom mods.
This will all become much easier if we get a working recovery.
Yes, I mean official ROM upgrading after rooting. Sorry for the confusing.
I am waiting for Android 4.4, I don't know when Asus can release it for ME372CG. I don't want rooting affect ROM upgrading in the future.
Your answer is quite clear, thanks!

Hello all!!!
Dr. Psycho, I confirm your solution is working!!!!.... Thank you very much... I bought the device today, based on your solution to root the phone... Thank you again...
Theodore
Thanks! working great here
I noticed that some JP (as opposed to WW and TW) FonePad 7 users are trying to use my server to root. The JP version isn't supported yet (I didn't even know it existed). I can add it if someone with the JP version could help me get some values from their device. It'll only take a couple of minutes. Send me a private message if you're interested.
To check if you're using the JP version, go to Settings -> About tablet and check the "Build number" field. It should say "JP" somewhere in the middle.
Botto00 rooted the original Fonepad and made it Flash capable. There are several Flash browsers (Photon, Flashfox, Puffin), but because the Flash stream is redirected it's not a good viewing experience. I was wondering If you had any plans to incorporate Flash in your rooting method? I've already taken advantage of your root and maybe it's too late anyhow.

If I did come up with patches or ROMs, already having root would't be a problem at all. It shouldn't be too hard to make an app that instructs the bootloader to flash a package like DMClient does. Even if it turns out to be difficult, with root access, I can easily hijack the update-checking mechanism with a self-signed CA certificate and a web server, similar to how we're achieving root right now.
I did in fact have plans to make a recovery or at least an app that would act like a minimalistic recovery and let you flash recovery packages. The problem is, I'd need either a test device or a daring volunteer. And time too - I don't have much of that right now.

I quite understand time limitations working on stuff like this - I think everyone appreciates the time and effort you've spent on rooting Fonepad 7.
I followed the procedure in the link. Unfortunately, it doesn't work... maybe that fix is for machines that still support Flash.
Would I dare to volunteer? Hmm... now that I've got root I don't think I would risk it.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't suggest testing unless you really don't care if you brick the tablet.

USB OTG
Hi, i know this is not the right tread to ask but since there is not forum about our tablet i'll ask here. I have a fonemap 7 ME372GC the 4 GB version (witch by the way doesn't appear on Asus page) and i'm not able to use usb OTG. Is this not possible on our tablets or does mine have something wrong? I have 5.22 rom version andoid 4.3. I use an OTG cable witch is working on my HTC One
Thank you for your help
Let's root it again
Hi Dr. Psycho,
I just got a Asus fonepad 7 model: k00E (ME372CG) and I will put some more data about this device:
- Firmware version: 54.2F
- Android version: 4.2.2
- Baseband version: 1338G_1.12.0_0913
- Kernel version : 3.4.34-00006-gc3b491f
[email protected] #1
Fri Sep 13 21:24:31 CST 2013
- Build number: JDQ39.WW_epad-V3.2.1-20120913
000053_201307241030
It seems as this is the older version of the build then 3.2.4 but it is well WW.
Should I upgrade to version 3.2.4 (and can you explain me how to do this but still to avoid ASUS upgrading to even newest version) or may I try to update this "OTADelusion" update directly with this "old" build number following the instructions ?
And is there any risk of bricking my device with rooting following this method as you stated that there is no way to de-brick Asus fonepad 7 yet ?
Or is there any other (older and safer) way to root this older build version except this "OTADelusion" ?
Thanks in advance !
Cheers !

Look Here Before Asking Questions [Kitkat Related]

As many of us have took the recent Kitkat OTA we have a variety of questions. Since there have been many threads asking the same question or related to the same question, I will be making this thread to keep this from continuing.
Question: I have took the Kitkat update, is there any way I can root?
Answer: No, no known exploit works on the RAZR M, unless you have a unlocked bootloader. Then you can flash a custom recovery and flash a superuser.zip and gain root access (Credits - fredsky2)
Question: Can I unlock my bootloader now that I have the kitkat update?
Answer: No, the bootloader has been patched ever since the JB OTA. No exploits will work with the RAZR M.
Question: Will Rootkeeper keep root after the OTA?
Answer: I've yet to see it work so I assume no.
Question: When I take the OTA, will it lock my bootloader?
Answer: No, once the bootloader is unlocked, it cannot be relocked.
Question: Can I downgrade to Jellybean after the Kitkat OTA?
Answer: No, the bootloader is locked, meaning you cannot downgrade or even touch the kernel.
Question: How can I return my phone to stock so I can receive the OTA?
Answer: RSD back to stock.
Question: Where can I get the SBF Files for the DROID RAZR M?
Answer: Here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=8
Question: My phone won't let me take the Kitkat ota, what do I do?
Answer: Most likely it's because apps are disabled or root is present. RSD back to stock is typically the solution to the problem. If you want to RSD back to stock but don't want to lose your data, look for the question below.
Question: Can I sim unlock after I take the Kitkat update? (Suggestion Credits - gtmaster303)
Answer: Yes! There is a tutorial with video on how to do it found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487863 . MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROPER DRIVERS INSTALLED!
Question: Can I flash a custom recovery after the Kitkat update?
Answer: No, unless your bootloader is unlocked.
Question: I'm getting a getvar error, how do I fix it?
Answer: In the xml file found in the zip, delete any getvar lines at the beginning of the file.
Question: Can I RSD without clearing data?
Answer: Yes! I asked myself and I'm adding this for others sake. Delete the <step operation="erase" partition="userdata" /> line in the XML file found in the zip. I suggest using it only for when you're on the same version of the update. So 9.30.1 to 9.30.1. Give credits to lem22 for helping me out! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2755924

The Good
The UI is definitely smoother. It doesn't jitter or stall under heavy usage anywhere near as much as it did in Jellybean.
Battery life when the phone is asleep seems to have been improved a little.
USB audio out is now supported.
The occasional "screen jitter" that plagued the Jellybean build is gone.
KitKat's Quick Settings panel is quite handy.
The native lock screen now supports adding, removing, and rearranging widgets.
Although it can't be installed from the Play Store, the Google Experience Launcher can be sideloaded and works just fine.
The Neutral / Very Subjective
The AOSP keyboard has changed; the keys are smaller and, in landscape, very squashed. You may need to adjust to it (I'm trying, but it's a struggle) or find a replacement.
Battery life when the phone is actively in use has not been noticeably improved in my experience; but it hasn't been noticeably worsened, either.
There's now a shortcut to the camera from the lock screen, which can be used even if the phone is locked by a pattern/PIN/etc. (Great if you're a shutterbug; not so great if someone else decides to troll your Dropbox/Drive account.)
The Google Camera app works - but Photosphere can't be used, as the Razr M doesn't have a gyroscope.
The Bad
No more root, for those with locked BLs (me). (Saferoot fails, and many users are reporting losing root even when they try survival methods.)
Wi-Fi tethering via most apps (e.g., FoxFi) has been blocked, so now you must pay your carrier for the feature unless a new workaround is discovered.
All notifications I've seen so far now flash the notification light white, instead of unique colors. This may be frustrating for some who used the colors to decide whether to check the phone immediately or later. (Luckily, there are ways to address this.)
The Blur launcher is same 'ol, same 'ol. It uses a solid black background for the soft keys and notifications bar (rather than taking advantage of KitKat's transparency support), and it still has that Quick Settings menu on the left (which is redundant now). In addition, Holo Launcher (which I was using) doesn't account for the space used by the softkeys at all, making it difficult to use. (I've switched to Nova Launcher, which is working fine.)
I've experienced some weirdness with the application switcher. Sometimes it drops me to the launcher right after displaying the list, and sometimes apps will overwrite another's position on the list, or be dropped from the list entirely without reason (this is always temporary, however - just bring up the switcher again).
Some apps can no longer write to the SD card - or at least not wherever they please. We still have the Files browser, mercifully (but I favor Total Commander anyway, which seems to work perfectly).
The audio quick switch on the lock screen has been removed. Also, the buttons for entering a PIN are smaller.
(Leraeniesh) Under heavy usage, the Razr M may get hotter under KitKat than it did under Jellybean, and may drain the battery more.
(GPIX) Some users have noticed decreased network performance in some apps, such as Chrome or YouTube, while on Wi-Fi and with Wi-Fi power-saving enabled.
(GPIX) Several users have reported popping noises - when a sound begins to play, or in the middle of playback. (I haven't experienced it, however.)
Swype is no longer included. If you used it in Jellybean, you will need to purchase it on the Play Store after taking the OTA.
(ls3c6) Some have encountered problems with sharing the address book to paired devices over Bluetooth.

Yes, you're correct, that's the last one with unlockable BL. If that's what you have, you are LUCKY!
Also, I've just discovered it's not possible to downgrade to JB after flashing KK even with an UNLOCKED bootloader!

Thank you all for suggestions and thank you for answering questions while I was gone camping! I'm back and will be updating thread with credits!

Yes, you're correct, that's the last one with unlockable BL. If that's what you have, you are LUCKY!
Also, I've just discovered it's not possible to downgrade to JB after flashing KK even with an UNLOCKED bootloader!

It is possible. Just tz partition and one other can't be. If you remove command to flash them from xml, you'll be able to downgrade via RSD.

Thanks, someone else pointed that out in another thread and I was able to get it to work by removing gpt and tz from the xml.

Lenovo A7600 Rom - Lollipop

Would be very grateful for a link for Lenovo A7600 Rom for Lollipop O/S. A link other than that posted in 3 parts on a spam site.

Ive just picked up one of these tablets and managed to root it and install custom revcovery.
To be honest I think there are zero custom ROM for this device and the supposed Lollipop ROM on those spam sites are bound to be a load of virus. I have seem three or four such 3 part download sites all of which are hidden behind a survey. All the comments on the sites are exactly the same but are posted by different people depending what site you look at which indicates they can't be trusted.
I have tweeted Lenovo to see if they plan a Lollipop update but no reply yet.
I think we need to either need to learn how to port or find a dev that can do it

There isn't a Lollipop ROM yet for A7600f. It is possible to root and get custom recovery installed but as far as I can tell there is no official lollipop update or custom ROM development at all

I checked the link and it is for the S8 smartphone which also as model number A7600. If you have that smartphone you test it at your own risk but if you are talking about a rom for A7600F tablet it won't be compatible.
As Lenovo don't seem to be official updating the A7600F tablet im guessing we need a custom rom. Unfortunately I don't think it's that popular a tablet so won't pull in developers and regrettably I'm not skilled enough to even know where to start.

I received the s8 a7600 with android 5.0 - it looks like that OS is just installed by seller, with multiple application that are a huge adware/spam generators. I tried to remove all (root/remove apps), but it destroys a little the functionality (dialer has opacity - not so easy to find what is going on, camera not working at all). But generally works. If anyone has skills - I am sure it can be easy fixed (for example install 3rdparty dialer - but that one from lenovo is pretty fine). But I think I will update phone with stock ROM, but I need to find how to do that safely and be sure I can back to the actual software...

A bit of a necro here ...
Yep, it is a long-winded guide. I wrote everything as best I could just in case.
I'd be surprised if more than 5 people are still looking to root this device. But for those folks, I updated the guide tonight.
I hadn't used the tablet much until this past week, my phone was doing better and I was only using the tablet for streaming videos as a portable TV. However my phone died and I finally got around to re-rooting the tablet (I has lost root after applying an OTA update about a year ago).
And no, there are not any custom ROMs ... no Lollipop ... no Marshmallow ... never Nougat ... for this tablet. This guide is PURELY for getting root on 4.4.
That said, here is the short version ... this MAY work on a never-rooted A10 A7600F ... it may only work to REFRESH the root. I have no good way of knowing as there isn't a chance in hell I'm going to revert everything to stock to find out
Glad to know at least 10 people got help from the guide.
UPDATE 9/22/2016:
Revised Steps are simple:
* Download Kingo Root (not King Root, that failed) APK version for Android.
* Run Kingo Root.
* If it fails, reboot, and try again (mine failed the first time)
* Assuming Kingo Root worked the second time (if not, see the original detailed steps below) ... DON'T REBOOT yet (when I did this, the root disappeared, so I had to run Kingo Root a 3rd time)
* Install a Root Checker and verify root access
* Install (first time) or uninstall and re-install (updating is fine if yours was out of date) SuperSU by Chainfire (other SuperSU may or may not work, Chainfire worked for me)
REBOOT
* Re-run Root Checker to verify root access (don't run Kingo Root before this) ... it should be using SuperSU to grant root, NOT Kingo
* If rooted, uninstall Kingo Root
* REBOOT
* Re-run Root Checker to make sure SuperSU continued to work after removing Kingo Root.

There are multiple "A7600" devices out there. This is specifically for the A7600F, aka the A10. Different device, ROMs not compatible with other A7600 devices. Lenovo can burn in hell both for their lack of updates as well as their naming conventions.
Hi all,
I have ported a CM13 ROM to this device to bring us to Android 6.0.1. if anyone is interested I will start a thread for and provide instructions and a link later today.

[Q] xperia z1c lollipop memory leak issue

is current xperia z1c lollipop still have memory leak issue ?
I used lollipop for 2 days already. and it always restart my game (minimized to background) after I open browser to use google (yeah only 2 recent apps displayed. chrome and game apps).
I hate this because my game need long time and heavy bandwidth at loading screen. I never get this problem when I used kitkat. I heard there's xposed module to fix this memory leak issue but my phone isnt rooted.
or is there a way to return to default OS (kitkat) like when I first bought it ? maybe I'll do this way. reset it to kitkat again. but I dont know how.
thanks.
You can flash stock kitkat with flashtool. I should have stock EU . 157 rom somewhere on my pc and can upload it if you want.
Flashing stock rom is pretty easy. Watch a tutorial or something. I can help you a bit more when back home.
Back to your question. I have no idea I'm still running kitkat as L is still not available in my country.

is it working to use your stock rom at my country ? I thought different country have different kind of rom. not sure about this if this is true or not.
flashing stock rom doesnt need root access, right ? and maybe can I also backup current lollipop OS that I have so I can reflash it when it has been fixed ?.
so far what I like from lollipop is when someone call me, I can still use other app because call notification only use small box on top of my current running app. I like this feature very much.
It depends where do you live. If in EU it should be fine. If not I can find a rom good for your location.
No, flashing custom rom does not require rooted device.
I think you don't have to do the backup as you'll be able to just update it again ( at least I think so)

okay I can get lollipop with root+xposed (all day tried this. I read some tutorial how to do it properly because this is my 1st time doing something like this. so tired ). although I dont know if xposed wont work perfectly like you said because I only use 3 modules so far. App Settings (keep screen on for game I'm playing) and Fix Lollipop Memory Leak and gravitybox (LP).
what I've done :
- downloaded kitkat 14.4.A.0.157 from XperiFirm. and flashed it using flashtool.
- I've realized .0157 can't be rooted for now. so I've used your link that you gave (Root FW 14.4.A.0.157 (LB/UBL) ).
- after get root access, then I installed recovery using Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.11-RELEASE.installer.zip from http://nut.xperia-files.com/
- after that I flashed 14.5.A.0.242_CustomizedFR_Pre-Rooted_Dualrecovery 2.8.10 + Fix Xposed for Lollipop using recovery.
- and flashed Massive debloating and Xposed. links and procedure are also from that pre-rooted rom thread.
so far, no bootloop. dont know if I add some xposed modules again. I heard it will get bootloop if too many xposed modules is installed (?)

Hey there, the XperiFirm dev here.
No one answered your question so I will. The answer is: No.
Sony made sure to include the memory leak fix built in (the exact fix that the Xposed module offers) for their Lollipop releases. The Xposed module is pointless.
See attached screenshot. Basically the Xposed module replaces the AOSP function with exactly the same function but with this additional "release()" line. As you can see, Xperia already has this line included.

wow thanks to coming here :victory:
lol. so it's pointless to install that module because they are same thing exactly. time to uninstall.
actually my game is still restarted after I browsing a little. although I still see a lot of free memory in here. before, I thought this is because of that memory leak issue but I'm wrong.
if only there's module that can prevent lollipop refresh/restart/clear my game at memory when I minimized it at background.
I have the same problem, only with audio apps in the background. Pocket Casts, Stitcher and BeyondPod all crash and stop playing when running in the background, after I do something else like load the game Threes. This never used to happen with KitKat. I've also noticed that iplayer radio gets very jerky and skips back and forth by a quarter of a second continuously as soon as I turn off the screen. [edit - I just listened to it for a few minutes with the screen off and it suddenly cut out. I turned the screen on an the app was no longer in my notifications tray]
If Sony fixed this particular memory leak, what's going wrong with my phone? Could it be related to the fact that I've encrypted if for the first time? I'm getting desperate enough to consider factory resetting and losing everything, because listening to podcasts and playing threes is one of my favourite activities. It's not a demanding game for my year old, top of the line phone. My cheap tablet manages it, and so did the phone on KitKat!

- Turn it off.
- Hold Vol-

The Flashtool is simply what it says on the tin, it's a flashtool that flashes Firmware to your device in a similar manner as SEUS or PC Companion does and this is generally the preferred method for updating or repairing a device.
You can also use the Flashtool to flash a Generic .ftf which will remove any Operator Branding from any device...
You can find firmware files in your devices section or you can use XperiFirm by @IgorEisberg which is built in to and works along side the flashtool to download and flash firmware to your device..
There is also an Official Sony Flash Tool for certain devices with unlocked bootloaders.

DRM/TA.img Backup:
NOTE: To root newer versions of Android you HAVE to unlock the bootloader, no ifs, buts or maybes unfortunately. Before doing so we need to back up our DRM keys that we can restore them later if we don't want to lose a few features, because they will be lost in the process of unlocking the bootloader and there is no getting them back if you don't back them up. Unfortunately the tool required to backup our DRM keys doesn't work on Nougat so downgrading to Marshmallow is required, but you can simply use the flashtool for that.
Once you've downgraded then you need Universal (Dirtycow-based) TA Backup v2 by @rayman to backup your DRM keys. Backing up isn't essential if you don't want but you are strongly advised to, you have been warned!

Fastboot, Bootloader Unlocking/Relocking:
You can find a great Guide HERE that will show you how to use Fastboot which is the method used for working with the bootloader. There is one way to Unlock yours, using the Official method (For SimFree/Un-Branded Phones) which is explained HERE, but PLEASE NOTE! - If your Phone came from a Carrier then chances are (99%) you won't be able to unlock. There is a simple method of checking if you can or not which you'll find HERE.
The stock bootloader on most Android phones is set up to run a signature check on any update file you attempt to flash to your NAND internal memory. So if you were to take a stock Android phone purchased from a carrier, and try to install a custom ROM on it, you'd get nowhere fast. Even after rooting, you still need to get access to the bootloader. Basically, unlocking the bootloader lets you install unsigned ROMs, like CyanogenMod.- Know Your Android Bootloader - What it is and Why it Matters

TWRP Recovery:
See your devices section for TWRP recovery support.
An essential tool for anybody that loves to modify their Android device is a good custom recovery. TWRP has been around since the invention of the wheel back in 1996 and has been providing modders with all kinds of great tools. If you’re wondering how to get TWRP on your device this guide should help you with that. I’ll also go over all of the basic functions of the recovery and what they can be used for.- How To Install TWRP Recovery
DRM/TA.img Restore:
If you backed up your DRM Keys/TA.img then you have a couple of options to restore them.
We can use PoC...
First of all this tool fully replaces DRM fix! So do not use our tool with DRM fix!!! I'm going to explain what is this, how it working. Everybody know what drm fix doing and everybody know whats happening when bootloader is unlocked. Ok. This PoC is designed for unlocked devices and makes things identical to having bootloader never unlocked! Which mean this is for peoples who have backup of the trim area BEFORE unlocking bootloader! This PoC mounts your trim area backup (TA.img) to the kernel loop5 device which makes your trim area like real trim area partition (in our case it mounts your backup TA.img and uses it instead of unlocked trim area partition) so everything after android boot up is like having locked bootloader which mean all drm keys, widevine keys and etc is fully functional! And most better thing, we can use PoC with AOSP, CM or whatever for having trim area fully functional!!!
Do in mind this is for stock roms only! Only nougat and marshmallow by now, some of before marshmallow too.

Or we can use the Root kernel tool...
This tool repacks an existing kernel package (usually the stock kernel) in order to make it rootable and adds TWRP recovery as well. Version 4 has been succesfully tested with LP and MM.
In particular it adresses the following issues:
DM-Verity: Android is now using dm-verity to verfy the integrity of the system partition. Until you switch it off your phone won't boot after modifying /system
SONY RIC: RIC is blocking the write access to the system partition
DRM Keys: After unlocking the bootloader your device key is wiped, which deactivates some functionaliy. E.g. x-reality, denoise in camera aso.

Rooting:
When you root your phone, you gain “superuser” privileges to the Android operating system. When you are using a stock device, you have the equivalent of “guest” privileges. If you are familiar with any Linux operating system, you know that the superuser privilege allows you to gain access to administrative rights. This level of access gets you down to the nitty gritty of the OS with no restrictions, lets you make changes to the system, and run scripts that would normally be blocked with a standard user account. - What is rooting and why should I do it? The pros & cons of Android rooting

Until it's released it's a guessing game.

Hi,
I have exactly the same question ...
I bought a XZ1C with a Generic UK/HK rom and i would like to flash the latest French Generic rom. I tried many different version of FlashTool but no success to flash it. I used XperiFirm, i got the .ftf file but in devices directory, it seemed to miss the G8441 directory with the 2 files needed for the XZ1C be recognised by FlashTool.
47.1.fsc and G8441.properties are both missing. I think that's why the phone is not saw by FlashTool and also the ftf file ...
How to correct that issue ?
Same question here to.

Well, to be fair, munjeni was making a commentary on the fact that the main post still lists Flashtool when he is quite well aware that it doesn't work for 2017 Sony devices.
That's precisely why he developed the newflasher tool.

In hindsight, that seems obvious since he's the developer of newflasher (sorry for overlooking), but in my defense, without further context it was difficult to interpret it that way.
On face value, it appears to be a simple question of asking whether flashtool supports XZ1C.
Nevertheless, I apologize for my mistake, and thank you for pointing it out.
I apologize beforehand if the question is stupid, but how to downgrade Oreo to Marshmallow (MM) on an XZ1c device (G8441). I ask this because I can not find any MM firmware for this device (which was already released with a version of Android 8.0).

You've already answered yourself. This phone shipped with Oreo - there is no MM firmware, which is at least two generations old. You won't find any Nougat firmware either, with the sole exception of building your own AOSP, for which Sony did release Nougat binary. But I'd advise against doing that, it's not meant for normal users.

it seems there's a typo in the op, then. He accidentally said

Once you've downgraded then...

When he meant to say that "you cannot backup the TA.img on these devices."
No, it wasn't a typo. Actually, it was more that the OP copy/pasted/compiled information from older Xperia devices on the assumption that all Xperias are similar. (They're not really)
It's even stated in the first sentence that it was written as a general reference based on his older reference guide, which is by smartphone standards simply ancient.
In fact, this thread was posted before the XZ1 Compact was even released. There was no way anyone could have already had rooting/debranding/modding guides for an unreleased phone.
It was clear from the beginning that it was not a model specific guide, and soon after the XZ1 Compact was actually released, it quickly became apparent that most of the information in this post is outdated and no longer valid for our phone.
I'm sure the OP had good intentions in posting this back then, but without advanced knowledge of what the actual retail unit is like, it was a pretty big risk, and unfortunately the reality is that one would instead be largely misinformed by this guide rather than obtain helpful guidance.

Damn, I've been hunting for a MM ROM for a while. This post should be flagged as outdated / inaccurate.
