Thermal-engine.conf - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Could someone upload or send me the thermal-engine.conf of the G4? We are trying to figure out why the Nexus 5X throttles so much more than the Moto X/MI4C/G4 in this thread.
The G4's thermal-engine.conf would really help with that. The file should be located in system/etc.

Well, even the G4 throttles quite badly. I got very annoyed and will always delete both the thermal config files after installing a new ROM.
But since you requested, I extracted them from my stock based rom's zip.

Thanks for the files. If you think the G4 throttles badly, then never ever touch a 5X. I wonder, though, would deleting the thermal files not cause the ROM to create new ones with default values? Completely removing any kind of thermal management seems like asking for a fried phone.

But the files never got restored back and the phone is actually working a lot better without them, maybe only for me? Mine has no temperature issue even without them and I'm staying in Malaysia, a country with high temperature throughout the whole year. But indeed, the average temperature of the phone will slightly increase, but not much difference though, for the sake of much better performance it's totally worth it. :cyclops:

Maybe the CPU is just using the default values if you delete those files, or maybe it is indeed temp limit free. I would at least run some careful tests to see if the limit is gone.
A dead phone is a lot slower than a throttled one.

At least the highest CPU temperature I have got on this phone without the thermal config is about 50℃ considered my previous Xperia Z could even reach 80℃+ and is still standing strong after two and a half years. However I rarely stress the phone that much so no worries actually.

It depends on what sensors the G4 and Xperia Z got the information from. Core CPU temperature is usually a lot higher than other temps. The Nexus 5X for instance has 16 different sensors. Well, at least it shows 15 different temps.

G4 starts throttling at like 52 or 53. I might try and make a few diffrent throttle mods of this one. Mine gets pretty warm sometimes. But i crank down on mine pretty good. I live in northeastern us. And a hot day usally is 75 maybe 80. I think mi e throttles big cores to 1.2ghrts at 53. Which lags like crap. Now i know g2 and g3 had thermal mitagtions u could shut off in one of the hidden menus. They stopped the throttling. But i aint seen it on g4.

With default values the 5X throttles the big cluster at 39°C and shuts it off at 41°C. So I think the G4 does a much better job, but at the expense of higher temps on the front and back.

[Q] Kaiser 3D Drivers For Android - SOLVED - CAN BE CLOSED

I was wondering, the 3D performance is a lot better on the kaiser when using the video drivers (of course).
But is there any way to get the 3D driver to work in android?
Since i don't think it's possible to just install the driver on WM and then run Android because it fully shuts down WM i was wondering wether there's a way to get that nice smooth performance on Android as well.
Or is there any app that makes the kaiser a bit faster (graphics wise)?

3D Drivers are implemented (if that's the correct word (I'm from Belgium so)) in Android.

Aren't they allready implemented using opengl????
If your running android you already have the drivers, they are in the kernel. I think we need to make a big sticky of that somewhere, third time ive seen it asked this week.

As has already been said, HW3d is implemented into the kernel which utilises the qcom chip in our kaiser's, but the hardware graphics acceleration although better then nothing is pretty crap compared to the new phones coming along so you can't expect miracles, just be glad it has any at all and android can actually use it unlike window mobile!

I would not call 32 frames per second in NEOCORE, with your build, prertty crap.
Well, can not be compared to new phones, but you must admit that this is more than enough to run 3D games(we can play RagingTunder2!).

No, it is quite impressive for an old timer, but obviously it can't keep up with the new hardware on the market and therefore the applications/games that are targeted at these devices. It's also a shame it isn't man enough for new video codecs although installing arcMedia which uses FFMpeg as it's backend improves things a little and gives support for more formats.

I've heard that the kaiser had a quite good video chip but that's probably compared to the other phones at that time .
Well my phone is running Quake2 at about 10FPS (a bit higher (about 15-20) when looking into corners etc.) and i was hoping for a bit higher rate but it seems it isn't very easy to gain that on android.

awhile back I looked at the performance of our integrated 3d and it is about on par with a rage 128 from what I remember... which is pretty bad lol not to mention that on android we have to run through java and we have a pretty weak fpu. I mean in linpack with my barebones rls 3 and overclocked to 572 mhz I get 3.8 mflop/s which is pretty bad lol. That was with JIT working properly even.

Have u had any problems clocking that high? I'm a bit scared to clock higher than 450Mhz because i don't want to brick my phone tbh.
Would be cool to clock that high.

And there's the batt consumption issue... even if it can be reached ull need a really really long lasting extended batt, I got a Seidio Inocell 1600mAh, in a donut with .25 kernel and oced to 470, my batt last me like 10-12 hours if I use moderate wifi, bt or gps and keeping my data to 2g only.... If I try to keep my wifi or gps turned on all time and use 3g probably it wouldnt last more than 4-6 hours.

Well since the data here costs a lot of money (i don't know what it's like where you live) i rarely use it.
GPS is off and wifi is only on when at home or for a short period of time.
BT is also rarely used and off when not used.
I'm using a 2880Mah battery so the clocking won't be that much of a problem and i can recharge it every night so.
Aren't there high costs for 2G and 3G? it's waay to expensive to have it turned on all day.
Would i get any problems when clocking to around 500Mhz or smthng like that?

If ur using a data plan its relatively cheaper... i've oced my lil htc tilt to 520mhz, specialy when trying heavy apps and never had an issue (well never had issues more than the normal ones LOL ) you'll feel it gets a bit "warm" in the backside (maybe due to the higher batt consumption) and speed increase isnt that much beyond a certain point but maybe ull be luckier than me! (this is something common in evert oc! my cousin and i both have an evga gtx 275 i can get ir run almost 100 mhz higher than stock and if my cousin even tries to touch the values his pc hangs up!!) Taking abuot that... The only thing i've never tried was to oc the gpu (i've seen that option in atools) dunno if its doable in our kaisers and if there's a real increase/decrease in performance... if you give it a try maybe you could publish ur results...

I'll try clocking CPU to about 500Mhz or a bit more
Going to use it tomorrow because it's about 9pm ATM.
GPU would be nice if it was possible to overclock it.
I'll post it tomorrow, could be that i can't see any result compared to a lower frequency.

As i've said before many times there is no risk in overclocking past 528 because we are not touching the voltage going to the cpu when we are overclocking it, just the crystal that controls the frequency it is running at. There is a slight heat increase and loss of battery consequentially because of that extra heat but that is it. I am speaking from experience overclocking a 2.4 ghz celeron E2200 to 4.25 ghz on air cooling with no disatrous results and used it as such every day. Basically I overclocked it with a pinmod for voltage and FSB increases and then I overclocked it further with the motherboard and supplied even more voltage. For the heatsink I used an OEM socket 775 heatsink and had no problems at all, it typically ran about 48 Celsius. If an overclock that high and potentially harmful won't kill the cpu then certainly one of a much smaller % is not going to harm a little kaiser.
FYI I took the voltage on that Celeron to 1.7 volts to get it that high. Stock is 1.1 if I recall

See BSEL pin mod for socket 775 as it isnt a gigabyte board that should send your OC soaring through the roof since it doesnt use CPUID for configuring its clock speed on boot.

Just tried Raging Thunder 2. Wow - I had no idea games like this could run well on our old machines - except without an accelerometer I can't see how to steer and accelerate at the same time .

[Q] Overheating 🔥?

I just got my Samsung Galaxy s6 edge white 32gb last night and I noticed that is over heating than it should be. I'm using it for Web browser and texting nothing that should cause to heat up. I also updated to the latest version.

Actually if it was overheating then the phone would automatically shut down to prevent damage, but yes the phone does get hot rather quickly. But I've had glass and aluminum phones before and they always get hot fast since metal retains heat.
Mine ran a lot hotter than a normal glass and metal phone, and it was laggy/jerky. I flashed the stock firmware to it, and now it's smooth and cool.

Smart switch is not working for everyone. Hit or a miss thing.
My phone heats up to 44 C
What is the Warning Level is it safe till 45 or 50 Celsius ?
It happens when
1) On use of Google Maps while driving
2) Charging
3) When i use Sandisk OTG, to the extent that it stop the Transfer & freezes
4) Even if i Record Videos sometimes
5) While wireless charging

I agree with some of the sentiments here that the device can seemingly get pretty warm - especially when I tweaking things or using apps that use a lot of CPU or using the camera for too long. But I do believe a lot of it is related to the aluminum/glass case - I believe Samsung is basically taking advantage of the case as a though it were a heatsink - releasing all the heat into your hand/pocket/air.
This is truly the first phone i've had that manages to stay under 100° F even when cpu frequency is locked to the maximum and I'm playing very gpu-intensive games, provided that i'm not charging the battery and the phone is not in an unusually warm environmnt like a hot car. I should mention that i'm rooted and lots of preloaded software has been removed. I would download some sort of process monitor and check it to see if there's a misbehaving app to blame if this is happening regularly.

I saw that you posted a solution when someone had problems with his S6 edge overheating. I've an S6 and I think I might have the same problem.

I used Antatu benchmark and CPU temperature to test my phone and it got to 84.0 C twice, once when it was testing my CPU to it's fullest and once when it was testing game performance.
So I was wondering if you could run the test as well and tell me what temperature you got so I can compare. Thanks

For the record, mine just hit 85C while running AnTuTu. As far as daily use, it made a world of difference on my phone when I flashed the stock firmware the first time. The phone was terribly hot in my pocket when I was not doing anything, and it was SUPER laggy when I was. Not something I expected from this phone. After the flash, it was a Beast and ran MUCH cooler. It would get warm still when doing intensive tasks, but that would be expected from an Octa-core phone in my opinion. It does not get uncomfortably hot anymore, like it used to though. I would imagine it went WAY above 85C when it got hot before, because it was actually hard to hold at times.
If you have not flashed it since new, I would highly recommend it. I know it's a pain, but it's a one time thing that you never have to do again, and the benefit MIGHT be large. No guarantees, as you may not have the same issue, but I've received a lot of reports from people who have done it and they say it breathed new life into their phones. For me personally, it was DEFINITELY not a placebo affect. It was night and day.
With all that said, I've got my S6 Edge up for sale right now as I've moved to Apple for a little while. I continually jump around, and T-Mobile offered the iPhone 6 for $15/mo and I can trade it in 3 times in the next 18 months for free and keep paying $15/mo for the newest phone. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in the iPhone 6s. If it sucks, I'll be trading it in shortly for another Android phone.
PS: AnTuTu final score: 69314!!!! Wow!!!
One more thing. To eliminate ALL lag and slowdown, I replaced the Samsung Launcher with the Google Launcher. What a difference that alone makes! Seriously, try that one thing. It's huge. The Samsung Launcher has some issue somewhere that they still need to address.

I did not buy my S6 edge on contract with any service provider. I have all the same problems though. Will this solution work for me?

It should. As long as Smart Switch can recognize your phone model and download the Correct Firmware, the Flash WILL help the Heating and Lagging problem. If your phone is not recognized, then Smart Switch will not do anything. It's worth a try.
For me it happens especially when im playing arround with that samsung theme store build in app. I don't know why that app needs so much power to have that effect on the phone but for sure its something samsung needs to look at.
For sure they need to re-design that app from the scratch. Its like the "my first homepage" of theme apps.

A57 cluster, probably yes. I'm also working on a kernel, but I intensely dislike Overclocking because it isn't all that useful. The key to performance is with optimisation, not with raw power. So I'm most likely not going to include it, sorry.
What about underclocking and/or undervolting?
I think performance is good enough as it is, but would like to get better battery life.
I would like to be able to undervolt in order to relieve the bugging high temp warning. This phone rarely uses max performance. So, overclocking is not really a priority. Maybe a custom hotplug.
Crappy cpu. No point messing with it.

Hotplugging has been dropped not long ago. You'd basically need to reinvent it. Plus it costs more power than it would save
And what about undervolting to prevent excessive heat, @mythos234?
yea i guess undervolting is the only benefit here coz 2 ghz wont be hard to achieve but getting that overheating msg sooner aint worth it...
next thing u know is accessory back plates with mini fans to keep the phone cool...
seriously tho what good is the extra power for ? the phone is already fast with the correct setup (not that i saw any lag when it was stock)

A number of people have gotten over-temperature messages, sometimes with the phones even shutting down.
This has been reported with using navigation, I believe, and I know people have reported it when shooting video. High screen brightness is likely a contributor. But there are examples of the phones running too warm.
Personally, I'd be more interested in cooler running, and longer battery life, rather than increased peak performance. So underclocking, if anything.
Well, the overclocking is not necessary, but is an opportunity to know the limits of the chipset. Moreover, with it we could know if we can make undervolting to our phones and make it more battery efficient with an underclocking kernel, when we need it.

Happens to me too when gaming. The problem I observe is that Indeed, it is not excessive heat. But LG thinks otherwise.
You can actually underclock using Kernel Auditor and disable cores. Unless you meant Undervolting.

Currently using Kernel Adiutor to disable both A57 cores and the phone screen does not heat up like before... Battery life has improved from what i saw yersterday. Continuing testing today. Only problem i have is the damn phone will enable one of the A57 cores after a while which i dont like. I need my settings to stick.
Any Kernel Dev know which files are causing this? Tab 3 had something like this but a couple of files changed solved the non sticking settings on cpu.
Overclocking/underclocking sure but just disabling cores would work for most.

I haven't had any popups or heat related reboots, so I was wondering what the matter is here.
On every phone I see complaints over heat so I wondered if something is to it here or if it's the usual. And if there are overheating warnings and shutdowns, then there might be indeed something in the bush.
Try charging your phone in the car whilst using google maps to get to an important meeting, and then take a call just for good measure............and boom, there you have your own little meltdown.

That happens on every phone I ever had though. It's advised to not use a device while charging at all, so if you stress it to 120% while charging, of course it heats up..

What Temps do you reach using cpu intensive apps?

I'm not sure where else to put this (I searched and found nothing) but has anyone else been impressed by this phones ability to remain cool to the touch? I'm using the stock case that came with the US variant of the phone and aside from an APN issue where signals were going insane and the radio tried to connect to a billion different towers, I have not once noticed the phone getting much above ambient temperature.
Is this normal? Can anyone else confirm that this thing just doesn't get hot?
I'm bringing this up because I've owned/used around 30 different smartphones from all of the major manufacturers and the vast majority get quite warm during several normal tasks.
For instance, on most phones I've used, if the brightness is up and I'm gaming for any extended period of time the phone will get quite warm. If I'm charging and browsing the web, most phones will warm right up. If I'm gaming and charging at the same time, things get toasty. If I'm gaming and quickcharging/turbocharging things get pretty bad. If I'm gaming on a "practically magic" iPhone while it's charging- forget about it. Same goes for most phones and video recording.
The Le Pro 3 has remained completely usable during all of those tasks. It's actually downright creepy being able to heavily game on full brightness while quickcharging without my fingertip being on fire within a few minutes.

This is supposed to be the benefit of the Snapdragon 821 processor; fast but at the same time power efficient....
I hear you. Playing Pokemon Go with a Pro 3 is smooth and cool, I can say that playing for about 10 minutes straight and it gets warm, but not hot. Unlike playing it with my One Plus One, a 5 minute session and it gets hot. This phone totally surprised me :good:

Obviously they've made strides, but its not just the chipset. Reviews of the pixel, ZTE and Asus 821 phone all mention how the 821 is better than 820 (lol, as in it can't cook an egg) but they all say it gets warm and the pixels seem to have significant heat issues.
The battery isn't getting massively hot even under quick charge despite being enormous and charging very quickly for its size. The screen doesn't seem to emit much heat either though it's not some AMOLED qhd monster but still. I mean it's obvious that the CPU is right below the fingerprint reader as it does get warm but nothing even gets what I'd consider hot especially for a modern flagshipish smartphone.
I've used supposedly power sipping/efficient chipset before as well as stuff like the original moto x which was literally a heat bomb and none of them have done so well. I'm sure it's not the actual best temperature that a phone has ever been but it's like night and day for me!
Kudos to Qualcomm or LeEco or the battery manufacturer or the screen supplier- they all seem to have gotten it right with regards to heat and efficiency.
I even have the speed up box enabled for all relevant apps and have turned off most power saving stuff and the phone is still cooler than every modern smartphone phone I've used including hugely underpowered ones.

I had a same problem but after moving to CM, no such issues.

Good to know, if anyone else has this issue - mine was deleting T-Mobiles default APN and making a MetroPCS one (incorrectly), then deleting that and having it automatically revert back to T-Mobile. Once I cleared everything and manually put Metros APN stuff correctly everything cleared up and has been fine since.
But during that half morning when I couldn't figure out the issue my Pro3 was getting quite warm and I was ready to return the thing. The issue remained even after a factory reset until I manually adjusted the APN.

My situation was different then. APN was fine but it somehow kept frequently switching LTE bands/towers my carrier offer which caused ever frequent signal fluctuation.
Nothing could fix it until I moved to CM.

CPU thermal throttling under heavy usage

Can someone run a long CPU throttling test on this phone to see how heavily it scales as heat builds? The only test I've found online is https://3dnews.ru/assets/external/illustrations/2019/05/27/988154/sm.throttle_1.400.jpg, and it's pretty bad. I've seem comments about how this is one of the hottest 855 devices, and I dunno if you can use some software workarond like on some Xiaomi phones.

I've been looking for a strong phone to run emulators and my picks where either this or the Xiaomi 9T/K20 series. Screen, camera and development edged me towards this phone, but if it can barely sustain a gaming session then it's no good.
When I got mine I used it as a hotspot for 4 days while waiting for the flipcase I had ordered.
I was running both the 2.4G and 5G wifi hotspots at the same time, with a laptop and several other devices using it, and I also used it normally at the same time and even ran some benchmarks like Antutu, and it only got lukewarm at most.
Of course I have the E30 model with 12GB ram, which probably helps keep it cooler.
I'm still on Android 9 if that matters.

I found various results on Antutu and similar apps, but that only says about burst usage. If that image I linked is correct, after a few minutes the processor clock falls drastically.
If you don't mind please run the app I linked and print the result here. The default time is 15 minutes, but if you can manage a longer test I would appreciate. Of course you'll need to leave the phone resting during that time, so keep that in mind.
An example of a good result, ran on a Mi 9: https://i.redd.it/sh23onvimmq31.png. The phone can be used at full power without downclocking for a long time.
Here are the result. It depends on the temp on the sensor. It hit 90c when ran at full clock speed and it dropped to dynamic clock speed when it was hot on prime core. When it was cold enough it can boost to full speed again.
The environment temp was around 25c. Probably worse if the env temp was high

Thanks a lot! Finally more data on this.
The clean step is similar to the first slowdown on the test I linked, maybe from some governor setting on the kernel. There should be a way to either remove or relax the thermal profile if needed, but while a tiered throttle might be too overzealous at least it makes for less performance flutuation.
Anyway, overall it's far from what I've seem before, and pretty good on my book. Good to know. Are you on Android 10 already?

Yes, I'm on Android 10 right now. Every day use is fine but actually warmer than I expected. Especially when I do a lot of opening apps, switch between apps that ramp up the prime core.

I found thermal config file in /vendor/etc
It use virtual-threm to set cpu clock speed in this snapdragon 855 platform based on current temperature.
This is the stock setting that I got from here
