Random reboots? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Had the phone plugged into a Dash car charger this morning and experienced three or four reboots before and after connecting to bluetooth. Unplugged it and haven't experienced a reboot since. Anybody else experiencing this?

Just got the phone today and while setting it up it has rebooted on it's own 4 times. Once during bootup as I am typing in the decrypt password it froze up and rebooted from there which is before most of the OS is even loaded...I have fear.

It is going from bad to worse for me. I am now not just getting random reboots but the phone is going to sleep and powering itself off completely.

Sounds like hardware issue. Don't give up, request replacement.

I just opened a ticket. Waiting for a level 2 to contact me they want to remote wipe and reinstall oxygenOS on it. Although since the problem can happen at the preboot decryption prompt I have a feeling it will be a warranty replacement. Love the phone, just sad I got a lemon

Yes, I haven't had any freezing/rebooting issues. I'll try doing more with Bluetooth, but I think I've returned or trashed any poorly-behaving Bluetooth devices I've come across.

Have you opened a ticket yet? The site the sent me to schedule the level 2 tech to reinstall the OS just says "Currently, No services are available" I think I just want them to send me a shipping label so I can get the exchange started rather than jumping through these tech support hoops. I dont think the issue we are having is very common and I'd rather just get a working device than fix this one.

I had an issue transferring a file to the OnePlus 3 via Bluetooth after setting the phone up. I didn't experience any reboot issue accompanied with this though. I wish you luck with support. I thankfully haven't had to use it yet.

Yea i opened a ticket for a return but they have not gotten back to me yet after i confirmed my billing address. I told them to open up a return ticket so i can order a new phone right away instead of waiting for them to send a replacement cause lets be honest... that will take a while.

Yeah they are pretty much demanding I go through their repair process with a remote control session and stuff I should have just straight out asked for a full refund instead of reporting it as a broken unit. I have a feeling I am screwed at this point. All the stories I am reading on the OnePlus.net forums about RMA's and returns are complete horror stories. I hope I am proven wrong but this is certainly a downside of going with a small company.

Random reboots can be because of static electricity. Try to drain the battery to 0 percent and keep it at zero percent battery for 5 mins or so on floor. Then charge the phone back and see if random reboots disappear.

If I let mine sleep for more than 20 mins or so it would completely and silently power off. It is acting just like when you undervolt your custom kernel too much. I am pretty sure mine is a hardware problem like a bad capacitor or something.
So I went on the OnePlus site yesterday evening and figure out how to request a service ticket and requested a refund RMA and today got approved and a shipping label. I gave it to FedEx at lunch today. As soon as the credit hits my account I will just order another one. I love the phone and I bought $80 worth of accessories. I just want a functional one and I refuse to spend hours of my personal time on the phone with their support team. It is not my job to repair a defective device. I wish they would cross-ship a replacement.

About 14 hours later. I opened the service ticket at like 7pm and around 10am the following day got the RMA label. When opening the service request I just asked for an RMA because "I don't like the device". It is within the 15 day return window period I didn't say anything about it being defective or broken. I had 2 lvl 2 support appoins set up and they missed both of them. At that point I was done messing around with support.

I'm having the same reboot issue as well. Three times in four days. All while using Waze and listening to podcasts using the Pocket Casts app over my car's bluetooth connection. I drained the battery completely yesterday, hopefully that makes a difference.

Samsung warranty on ICS freeze issues

I was curious what experiences all have had with Samsung's tech dept. I am sending in my phone for warranty due to wifi issues and freezing screen which happens when it feels like it. Also having to reboot or pull battery after phone calls won't hang up properly. They just freeze everything.. Tech suggested they need to do some software settings to cure the issue.
This sucks because after a few replacements I actually got a screen that has none of the lines and blobs that my previous phones were having. I tried the SGS3 and had the same freeze and wifi issues so returned that one. No luck with the phone gods lately I suppose.
What kind of actual turn around do they have?

Cool, glad to hear they are quick. They don't give you the same phone back ? Finally found one without lines and blobs. The freeze issue is a bummer. Did your new phone have issues with lines and blobs in the screen?
If you are talking about sending the phone directly to Samsung, they generally will send the same phone back to you, repaired. You're looking at 1-2 weeks turnaround.
If talking about T-Mobile, and doing a warranty claim, which it looks like the other commenter was, they will send you a refurbished replacement within 24-48 business hours, depending on how late the order is placed. Those are hit or miss, I went through 6 warranty exchanges in just over a month, all with varied issues. 6th replacement is "good enough" for me, was tired of the hassle anyway.

Yeah same here, refurbs are definitely hit or miss.. I got 3 in a row with multiple bad pixels, one with the FFC offset and crooked before I called back and had an over-the-phone total flake-out and they gave me a early upgrade offer for the SGSIII, which I refused because at the end of the offer they tried to drain me of cash with a 25% off retail offer and extending my contract another 2 years after the upgrade if I chose to accept it. LOL

MobilTechvideos does great work and offers many valuable services. Their JTAG service will resurrect a hard bricked device, one that after a failed rom load will not even turn on. No sign of power. Dead!
They will also replace usb/charge ports and replace failing power button switches which it sounds like you need.
Samsung's mechanical power switches have a high failure rate and can cause the problem you mention. The old membrane switches are more trouble free but have fewer duty cycles.
Send your phone to MobiltechVideos for their power switch repair and you will be good to go.

I sent my galaxy note 4 in for JTAG repair. I never received a notice letting me know they received my phone. I tracked it shows delivery, went on there site to track the repair says waiting for fulfillment that's it. So I sent two emails asking the status of my phone I get no response. I paid $75 for JTAG repair and they have my phone. Do Not USE THERE SERVICES unless you like being taken for a ride.

[Q] I think my battery is toast!! 100 to 0 in 2hrs..

...What the heck I bought the Verizon htc one 3 months ago used from a guy meet him at the Verizon store phone was in excellent condition by looking at it so I took it home and put in my phone drawer since I was using nexus 4 at the time well long story short I dropped my n4 2 weeks ago broke screen so I pulled out the used m7 I had played around with it charged it up played couple games everything seemed fine so I got it activated woohoo. so after that I was ready to root install custom roms etc only to find out I had to pay $25 to start that process which I finally gave in and did. After using sunshine only a couple days ago to gain s-off unlock bootloader rooting and flashing supersu and installing custom recovery twrp most recent one I installed my first rom on this device liquid smooth and only enjoyed it one day.All of a sudden I noticed phone was getting really hot so I installed gsam battery monitor and it was showing temp as 107F sometimes higher but not much lower until I went outside for a while and it went down to about 74 .well I went on htc website and followed instruction to calibrate battery and I did that so I let it drain until empty and put it on charge and let it charge to 100 within 2hrs it was dead and doesn't come on at all period...what happened..
When you plug it to a wall outlet, does the charge while off animation show? If you let out completely die, you will have to let it charge while off for a little bit before you can turn it on.

I'll fill you in on what I was told, in reference to a used phone. After I sent my phone for repair, I was informed that, although the phone was within the warranty window, it was voided because it was purchased off eBay. You may be fortunate enough to get it done at no cost, but the odds aren't high. You'll never know unless you try...
Why don't you contact HTC directly? They know the date it was activate and that starts the warranty time. You would have to send in for repair and not swap and hope they don't swap the motherboard to keep your sunshine license. It goes by board serial. You have to hope that they do not decide to "fix it" and find out it was s-offed either. Sometimes they know, other times they don't

Heck sometimes they don't even know that. On a second hand m8 I have that I sent in for repair I got to chose my warranty date. They were very nice about it.
If you have a Linux distro you can see if it is stuck in limbo mode. Below is an unbrick method for the M7ul, but you get the jist... Best to send to HTC If in that mode.

I'm back with the news my plan was to send to HTC but they said since my warranty was 2 weeks out date I would have to pay out of pocket between $100-180 and they also said if they find any other problems that may have caused it out would be more and that they would factory reset it back to HTC setting so I figured they eye going to check everything and with it being rooted, s-off custom ROM, recovery I think they would have kept it to further help stop development etc so I found a local repair shop that's going to replace battery and labor for $60 bucks.. Hope it goes well in mean time I went and bought another nevus 4 love this phone and with free development. But since I paid for s-off and didn't get to enjoy it I will be keeping m7 awhile as I was just getting used to it..

Are there Apps that would put the Note & at risk by heating up? Should we beware?

i have had the N7 for a few days now. first thing I did was turn of fast charging. I also only use the wireless charging. To this day it remains really cool to the touch after charging fully.
However, I was using my Note 7 yesterday, with the gps on in the car for the first time, when it got really hot. I didn't realise it until I got to my destination. Worse, it was sitting on a vent holder with the aircon on in the car. I had to shut it down immediately. Hence my question, are there other apps, gps, etc that create a lot of heat? Even VR use did not make it that hot!!
Why are you still using? Your question is silly. This phone is in recall mode. Stop using it.

That is not normal. A simple task like GPS should be heating up you phone to a questionable temp. Return it.

I'm using mine, I dont have any problems with it, it never gets up to past 38C fast charging 3.0 + intense gaming, performance is amazing no lag or shutter even in pornhub with multi window. I cant complain about anything with this unit, I'm afraid they would actually send me a device that doesn't run as well as this one. I love this damn thing!
I'm shutting it down today and moving back to my note 4.

I'm still using mine, keeping an eye on temps but haven't had any reason to be alarmed. Still quick charge it with no excess heat to speak of and wireless charge (slow) next to the bed. I'm going to look into my options with T-Mobile regarding the recall, but if I have to use an upgrade or pay in any way I'm most likely going to keep using the device. I dont' want to run the risk of getting a unit as a loaner, and then cracking the screen on that unit and getting ****ed in the end. I'm not going to pay additional cost to get a case for a loaner phone if it comes down to it, I may just ride it out.
Edit: confirmed that the loaner device would have to be returned in like new condition. Since I don't want to spend money on a case, for a phone I have absolutely no intention of keeping, I may just keep an eye on the heat of the phone, and ride it out.
The hottest my phone has gotten, like most modern phones, is the initial setup process. It's like a one legged man at an ass kicking contest.. Downloading, setting up this, installing that. I've used every charger I have and it's been fine... I still fast charge this phone. Now, I dont leave it alone while charging but truthfully you shouldn't with ANY charging device. At least this may stop some charging complacency we all have at times....
Mine also never got too hot until today. I've just received the mi vr playset so I had to try it. When i removed the phone from the vr pouch it was almost as hot as my z5 just before shutting down its camera due to overheating. The gsam notification read 56 C but not sure what it represents.
Needless to say, won't repeat this experience with current note.

Seems like we're all on the same boat, replacing or awaiting replacements. GPS and VR seem to be the main culprits in getting the N7 warm. Is that a general experience? Are there others apps that you have experienced?
GPS makes any phone hot. That's normal. People going paranoid all over.

No it isn't. Carphone Warehouse (retailer in the UK) are saying getting it replaced is voluntary. Reading between the lines (their lines), this seems to be a big fuss over nothing.

I walked into a local Carphone Warehouse and asked about the changes and replacements, etc. I actually met a senior Samsung employee who told me that word from Samsung is that replacements will start on the 19th Sept. That people who purchased through them as carriers would be contacted and replacement dates and times arranged.
I am still using my phone also no heating issues I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon unless it "explodes" of course LOL
I plan to exchange mine when replacements becomes available. After the initial setup inconvenience, all will be well. Plus i will have that extra peace of mind. Until then, I'll continue to use it, keeping an eye on the temperature.

Has anyone tried keeping their Galaxy bombs after the replacement came in the mail?

Here in Canada it seems you are asked to mail back the old phone to a recycling company. So I'm wondering if there are any consequences to "forgetting" to mail it back, aside from potentially barbecuing your leg/car/home. Anyways, can they force me to send the old one back after the new one arrives?
I don't see how they can know you haven't sent it out. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They might know based off the IMEI. They could just easily check to see if the phone relating to the IMEI has been sent in and if it hasn't, they'll email the owner of the bad phone.
Well that's what I assume. My old Note 7 is still in the box waiting to send to UPS.

Well that's what I assume. My old Note 7 is still in the box waiting to send to UPS.

That's exactly what I was thinking after submitting my first reply lol. When we inputted our imei/serial in their official exchange page they can easily see who was sent replacement or not...

That is if the recycling company actually records the imea of every device they receive before "recycling" them or if they just report raw numbers.
Several in the Canadian thread have made it clear they have been sent the return box even when they already returned their phones.
It will be interesting to see what documentation is included. I am planning on saving screen shots of my return tracking email showing the old device delivered just in case.

speaking of which those in canada who have had a replacement device sent did samsung email you? they said the devices would start shipping on the 22nd but still nothing:s
I got another email saying they'd start on the 27th, then today replacement came in with an extra box with a return label already on it.
No other documentation included. I even had to call in and ask for an unlock code for my new note 7, it wasn't provided automatically like with the original one.

Here in Canada it seems you are asked to mail back the old phone to a recycling company. So I'm wondering if there are any consequences to "forgetting" to mail it back, aside from potentially barbecuing your leg/car/home. Anyways, can they force me to send the old one back after the new one arrives?

Really! Behave yourself. You must be aware of the dangers of keeping such a mobile or even worse the consequences of selling it or even giving it away. Send it back. Samsung have dealt with this situation in a very odd way. They began with good professional intentions the situation then went down hill and for many the scenario has turned into a farce.
One thing for sure if and when you receive your replacement you must return your old device. It is the correct thing to do.
Ryland :good:
I still have the old one. It is better than the replacement.......
My replacement one is loosing battery VERY fast when idle...

It actually runs dead cold.... My replacement is much warmer.
Did it come with a prepaid label?? If so that's mostly likely how they are tracking it

Same here. I'm having so many issues with the replacement unit. The screen sensitivity issue is making the phone so hard to use, it loses power much quicker, and it gets quite warm. This whole experience has been painful.

omg sent to the recycling company ? remove the batteries and send them all to me lol
They will eventually send an update to all Note 7 phones that will disable them. So return the phone. They can track if your phone is in use or not.
for anyone who has broken.. smashed.. lost the spen... broke the sim holder.... this must be a godsend. what would have been expensive repairs... now they are entitled to new phone because of the battery. I would get great pleasure handing over a smashed phone and getting new one
Has anyone kept the s pen or sim tray or accessories? Do they just want the phone itself back?
I was advised to send EVERYTHING back in the box exactly as it was originally delivered - so that's what I did. The replacement is complete (as if buying a new phone) and the delivery guy asked for the return package. That's what he got after I'd factory reset. I'd previously backed everything up to Smart Switch on my pc.
Here in the UK, the delivery guy had a deliver & return consignment. So I had no choice but to return it. I bought direct from Samsung store online. Sent everything that was in the box back.
Thinking about it now I'm glad I did. No come backs from Samsung. The deals done & I have new replacement device that is perfect so far.
Glad it's all over now & I can get on with enjoying this fantastic device.
Instructions for me seemed to imply to just send the phone itself. And along with the phone there is no other documentation that would be sent to the recycling company. So they would need to turn it on to check the imei and possibly even factory reset it if I leave my password on. This all seems to point to them not really being able to determine whether it was actually sent or not. That said, seems like I'd be able to, at the least, keep an extra s pen and the in box accessories. That in itself would more than make up for the pain of exchanging. I just hope i don't have issues with the replacement like some people on here.
