NO US Location. - Xiaomi Mi Max Questions & Answers

So I got this phone from "Gear Best" - it's the 64 gig version running ROM MIUI Global 7.4 Stable 7.4.16.0 (MBDCNDE)
Is this a european rom cause it does not have USA as a location in it.
Furthermore - where is the links for European Firmware - anyone know that?

If you want MIUI then check out the unofficial Xiaomi.eu global ROM...
Or you can flash CM13 and be happy...

Since you got it from Gearbest, you have an unofficial MIUI ROM. There is no stable global ROM yet available for the Mi Max.
You'll have to unlock your bootloader and flash the official global dev ROM or I think you could use EDL and Mi Flash to install the ROM and keep your bootloader locked.
The global dev ROM does have the US as an option for your locale. To be honest, it really doesn't do much when you set your locale. When I was using the global dev ROM before, US wasn't an option and I ended up just using Hong Kong as my locale. Since Xiaomi added US, I haven't noticed any difference.
Also, I don't think the global dev ROM is available for the 64gb version yet.

What Mi Max Variant to Buy?

I want to buy the 128GB with 4GB RAM version but I hear it's less supported by roms.
Can this version be unlocked and rooted?
How is it less supported? Will the available roms for MI Max not work for it?
What is Helium and Hydrogen? I can't find enough info on both. Can a 128 version be either hydrogen or helium? I'm confused
Which should I buy? 32, 64 or 128? What's the advantage?
Storage really don't matter to me. I just want the 1GB RAM Upgrade. But depending on how it's less supported I may opt just to get a 3GB.
Thank you
All versions can be unlocked and rooted and have ROM support.
The most flexible is the 32 gb version, has international developer and Chinese version original Miui support. Rest do not.

Thank you badrsj. Too bad there's no international for the 128

Because 128GB model is not internationally released, only china (so they have chinese, that's how Xiaomi operates) I'm sure once it releases internationally (they have announced official release in India, waiting for it) Xiaomi will release the firmware (ROM) also.
Hydrogen = ROM 16GB / 2GB RAM or 32GB / 3GB Snapdragon 650
Helium = ROM 64GB/ 3GB RAM or 128GB / 4GB Snapdragon 652
All is not lost
After buying the 64/3 (before I knew 32/3 had more support)
I installed the China developer ROM, original Miui release, stock.
Added Google services via Google installer, gave permissions to access whatever and auto start as needed. I have a good working stock google device with minimal Chinese apps, cause you can uninstall most. So it's doable at virtually any model.
But that doesn't mean there's better international and developer support, still get errors here and there.
One additional way to go is Miui.eu large robust unofficial community releases firmware, but it's not stock official.

I have the 4/128 version which is Helium, and as mentioned earlier official roms there is not much international roms yet, just China dev and China stable.
But, there are some other roms available to use: (which all have all bloatware, chinese items removed, and google apps integrated)
- Xiaomi.eu roms (beta & stable)
- multirom.me roms (beta & stable)
- ajsmsg78's Resurrection Remix 5.7.3 and Global rom
I have bootloader unlocked, and use Xiaomi.eu roms
thank you guys. Ill go fro the 128/4 model then

For Xiaomi.eu roms, both stable and beta get OTA updates, but on their site they mention that for Dev Beta, they are only pushing OTA once a month, weekly updates can be manually downloaded and updated via About Phone -> system update - > 3dotMenu -> Choose update package...
about comparison of xiaomi.eu vs official rom: in short the base is taken from official rom BUT it is bloat-free, internationalized, tweaks, etc
i suggest to read more on their website.

Hi. Those versions are only available through the updater app if you have China dev or global dev ROM installed. Your device will come with global stable probably and to experience miui 9 and android 7 you will have to flash twrp and flash the dev ROM or use MiFlash with the fastboot method.

Hi! Don't know what version they installed. I bought this one: https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phone...il_sys&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shipping
One more question: it comes with bootloader unlocked? Anyway there's tutorial to follow everywhere =)

If it's from gearbest i think it will come with global stable.
About the unlocked bootloader , i don't think so , but there are tutorials to flash roms without unlocking the bootloader if you wanna hurry flashing . The best is to unlock it officially and proceed after with flashing.
MIUI 9 - v7.10.19 - China Developer Rom .. That's the final rom they have released (until now) that I downloaded..
Probably it comes with GApps and Chinese 'bloatware' (I would throw them away with Titanium backup, no problem).
Does this have some problems?? Anyone installed this specific version yet?

Hi! If you refer to the post above you , yea , i've tested the china developer rom. It does not have gapps and has chinese xiaomi apps that can be uninstalled.
If you guys want to try the china developer rom , you can download the latest version from xiaomi.eu , it's based on it and has gapps. Also , it is optimised for a smoother experience and no bloatware.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 global version

I'd like to buy a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 which is currently available only in the chinese version (sold with the chinese MIUI). I read that soon it will be on sale also in the global version (with the global MIUI out of the box). I was wondering if the only difference between the two variants is the firmware included or there are other differences
Just the ROM. You can unlock the Chinese version, and flash the MIUI EU or Epic ROM right now and have something very similar to the Global ROM right now.

Thanks, so if I flash the official global MIUI when it will be out it would be identical to the one sold as global version and I'll be able to get the OTA updates?
Presumably.
They just announced 2 hours ago that's it coming to India on the 10th. We can probably expect an official global ROM around that time.
I believe the English Version version at https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_786413.html is the global version. It support many frequencies for AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.

I bought that one, and it is the Chinese ROM, but the hardware is the same. I registered my phone with my MIUI account and was able to unlock the bootloader three days later. Now I am running the EU ROM and everything just works.

+1 Same here,another from GearBest.
As you mentioned, the hardware is the same across the board, there are no region-specific models, just like with OnePlus & their latest, the OP5.
Only internal hardware variations are w/RAM & Storage, the rest is identical,no matter where you buy it.
If the original rom has chinese and english and I want to use english anyway, why is everyone changing to the eu or global roms?
You have less Chines grap on your phone (apps)

Remove the all the Chinese apps, and several things like Netflix and Contacts just work better (or at all).

Where Do I Buy Mi Max 3 with EU Rom?

Hi guys,
Could you guys suggest to me a website that sells the xiaomi mi max 3 with EU rom? Or is it possible to buy a global rom and flash it with EU rom?
.

The rom from xiaomi.eu is not an official firmware, it's a custom rom based on China rom with some tweaks. You can flash it on both China and Global device.

before Global rom released tradingshenzhen used to have option whether you want your phone shipped with china rom or EU rom.
but ever since official global rom released, they only ship with global rom option.
you can just buy any phone with global rom and flash it with EU rom.
this required unlock bootloader wait time varies from hours to days.
there are guides about this everywhere.

hi there,
sorry for the late reply.
yes you can flash EU rom over global rom version once you unlocked your bootloader.
unlocking bootloader for xiaomi depends on your xiaomi account. if you never use that account to unlock before then it might take days of wait time to get verified. in my opinion it's all worth it. since Max 3 is a good phone in all specs (yes including camera with google camera moded)
just fyi, EU rom is based on china dev rom. and it has been stable for pretty much all users.

I wouldn't buy from those shops if you want a global device.
When you look in the reviews you see Chinese devices on all photos.
But if you are flashing EU rom is doesn't matter if you have global or Chinese device, hardware is the same, only the charger is different.
Edit:
At the moment Banggood is the cheapest:

They sell official Global devices. And when you choose priority direct mail you don't have extra import costs.

Question Enable eSim

I have a global version of Xiaomi 13 pro with custom Chinese based Rom. Unfortunately, the rom doesn't have eSim support, so I'm looking for a way to enable it.
What I did so far:
1) added this line to build.prop. It added eSim option to the settings app, but manage eSim tab doesn't work
ro.vendor.miui.support_esim=true
2) then I installed LPA Xiaomi app and launched it with activity launcher. It got me to the manage eSim menu, but when I try to add a esim, it just says that some error occurred.
I really want to have eSim working, but not sure, what else is missing. If anybody knows how to make it work, I would really appreciate any help.

Not sure since Xiaomi Eu rom uses the latest Chinese firmware.
Today's Weekly update uses V14.0.23.4.25.DEV.
Made it work by making LPA a system app.

Esim as the bands are at HW levels, nothing is changed whether you have a CN or Global version.
You will still have what you had with a stock rom.
No more no less.
