Scrolling smoothness - Honor 8 Real Life Review

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Honor 8 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Screen touch response is above-average.

Smoothness all around, no sluggish reaction at all!

What about the wait time to select items after scrolling?

The scrolling flies, but the rendering lags to catch up

its a problem with emui, every emui device i have come across this same problem persists.

easy to use
no touch problem quite good touch quality

touch quality is awesome but its the animation that annoys sometimes

I have always turned off animation ( just seems useless IMHO). When i bought phone i put on glass screen protector and touch did seem a bit slow in response, so i turned on gloves mode option in settings and now touch response is great, no lags, no having to press just a little harder... My 2 cents anyway.

Scrolling is nowhere near as smooth as on Xiaomi Mi3, there is lots of stutter. You get this will all big.little cpu though as its using a slow cpu for this task.

This and lack of sRGB mode are my two biggest complaints with this otherwise awesome phone. (The sRGB mode thing is in distant second place.)

If you are rooted, you can use L Speed to improve the overall smoothness.

Incredibly smooth for me!
Only had problems in one game but I think that was the games fault (it has bugs all over the place)

Most of the time when games lag, it is actually the game's fault especially in a high end phone like Honor 8.

[Q] Pages deforming when scrolling?

Altough there is a similar thread in Nexus10 forum, I am posting here the same question.
Just got my Note8, and i have noticed imediately this behaviour: when scrolling in portrait mode, pages are deforming, most notably on the left side. For me this is quite disturbing (this is my first Android tablet). I have used a Nexus7 for few days and did not notice such thing.
Here is the video from the other thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4-tKflikYY&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
Is anyone experiencing the same? I wonder if this is a manufacturing defect and should return the tablet, as in the N10 thread someone does not recognize this behaviour.

Thanks for the feedback. I went back to shop and confirmed it with the demo tablet. The same behaviour seen on the Ipad retina too. Strange enough, sony tablet z was ok, with more pixels than our tablet. Hopefully a custom ROM can solve this one.

I have only used a Nexus7 32G model and haven't noticed this one (I will ask my friend to test it for me). Nexus7 and Note8 have the same CPU and same resolution, but different GPU, different screen type and screen size. Can't be our eyes, can it? (lol)

I thought that's the chipset, and the CPU core is a Cortex-A9. Looking at the specs for Ipad3, it using the same Cortex core (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Cortex-A9_MPCore)
That's an interesting thought, I wonder if the Infinity tab, which has high resolution and uses the same core CPU exhibits the same behaviour when scrolling. I'll came back if i have the chance to test it.
I just watched the .mov format file a couple of times, and I'd tried the youtube as well, and I'm still not sure what is being described.
Is this a report that the text is blurring a little as the page is scrolled rapidly up and down?
Not a big issue for me, as I can't read text until it stops moving unless I want to get carsick right here on the couch
It's not enough of a lag between when the page stops moving and when the text is sharp that I notice it, if that is what the video's highlighting.
One thing you can try is getting into developer options and checking the settings for "force GPU rendering" and "disable hardware overlays"
I force gpu rendering and do not disable hardware overlays. On my device, that pair of settings gives me the best quadrant graphics scores. So I tell myself I notice the difference
I have already tried the trick with developer options, and didn't get any improvment.
The issue, for me, is not the text blur during scroll. It is that horizontal lines or text or photos are not horizontal anymore, but oblique, during scroll.
Try, for example, scrolling a google search result in browser, keeping your finger on the screen. I see the right side of the screen going faster than the left side of the screen, hence the sensation of deforming. The same effect i get when scrolling pictures in gallery or tumblr. If i scroll up and down several times the effect is obvious.
I have tested today more devices (Asus TF300, Ipad2) and noticed this effect. Despite my previous statement, tablet Z has the same.
I tend now to believe this as being a "normal" behaviour.
Yes, it's more of a bending and deforming of lines that should be straight when scrolling. Exactly like was described in the post above.
I guess I'm just used to the 0 lag of an AMOLED display...
Just a thought. Could it be a visual illusion? Like when you hold a pencil near one end with two fingers and wave it up and down, the pencil appears to be bending but in reality it is not.

You just blew my mind maybe
EDIT: Thought about it, nope. My Nexus 7 does the same but the OTHER way, horizontal instead of vertical.
Never noticed anything like that on my note n5110, but i definitely see what the problem is on the video above...it's wobbly. Will check my device again later and let you know. Doesn't seem normal to me but maybe I just never noticed it on my note.
EDIT: Wow I finally see it on my device. It took a lot of playing around, but I managed to consistently reproduce the issue by using tapatalk and scrolling up and down slowly while in portrait mode. I also had to hold the Note further away than I normally would to see the effect. Crazy optical! Since I don't really notice it in everyday situations though it won't be bothersome for me, but I definitely see how it might be annoying for someone who notices it more often. You have some sharp eyes :thumbup:

Agreed. Not nearly as smooth as my year old Nexus 6P.
You guys are complaining about the qualcomm version.
Over here with an SM-N930F (Exynos) and can't complain. Very smooth scrolling performance.
Deliberately opened a long thread from here on xda using Samsung browser (NOT CHROME) and it scrolls perfect even with music playing in the background while downloading a file.
souds diapointing
I can confirm the choppiness not only with the browser but also the transition when switching between apps. I swear my iphone5s feels better than this brand new flagship from Samsung. I've tried to turn off all the animations and to no avail.
Sent from my SM-N930W8 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've got a Tmobile Note 7. Mine seems to often not detect that I've tapped on something, and takes another tap or two to finally register. Other times, it'll be sluggish with scrolling, pulling down the notification shade, opening recent apps, and general on screen animations. The Samsung keyboard is especially bad.
The phone goes through almost no battery when asleep, so it doesn't seem like it would be something keeping the CPU active. This feels like either some sort of over-aggressive governor or some kind of conflict with data transferred to the new phone over Samsung Smart Switch.
I've rebooted multiple times, cleared app cache partition, changed animation scale to 0.5, disabled numerous Samsung bloat apps, nothing has helped. The issue started about a minute after I left the store, so it wasn't caused by any of this troubleshooting. Add this to the heat-up issues and unimpressive battery life when in use, and I am one frustrated dude. My S6 edge+ was leaps and bounds ahead of this thing.

yikes dude, your phone seems to have other problems other than the standard Samsung bs! tbh I haven't noticed stuttering while I've been using mine. Only problems I've had were with my back key, it took some time getting used to the placement and the capacitive touch buttons since I was coming from a phone with on-screen buttons. The only time I feel my phone gets hot is when I'm watching 1080p or higher videos while the phone is charging. You should try backing up important stuff to Google and then doing a full software reset and not use the smart switch stuff. I'll agree that the Samsung keyboard is not great I went back to SwiftKey but the screen size is something I'm still getting used to. I love that you can adjust the long press time to make it shorter on SwiftKey lol. Also Samsung browser is my default now just to test it out and I'm loving the fingerprint sign in thing for accounts and the ad block extension. Only good stuff so far
Exynos Note 7 reporting in - It's plenty fast and smooth so far.

Said the same thing.
But one way to improve it -
disable as many bloat apps as possible.
Use a different launcher - sense launcher beta has made it much faster.
Use google chrome
My battery life has improved and things are marginally faster. But it is a crying shame that the nexus 6p, the htc 10, the moto z, and even samsung last devices (galaxy s6) are faster than the note 7 in the day to day.
It's ... unnerving

Yeah.. I agree. This phone doesn't miss a beat. I came from the Samsung note 4 and it's just not comparable at all. The 820 + 6Gbof ram + DASH charge is a killer combo.
I can play an intense game, listen to music, FAST charge my phone all at the same time, Without it getting hot. Eat your heart out Samsung, Apple, LG.
I have an axon 7 and op3.. The performance and multitasking of op3 beats out axon.. Op3 can have 20 or so of my apps open without redraws. (Mostly gmail, adibe, file explorers, xda, asphalt 8, smashy brick, drastic...)
But my axon 7, even with a performance I'd mark at being 10% worse than the op3 (which is still awesome!) Has those dual firing speakers.. Makes all the games, especially racing ones way more intense.. I keep covering the speaker on my op3!
Funny that OP has done his research based on a report 6 months ago. If OP had type the exact same question on google search, a more recent report with the rectification or build.prop mod would surface.
In fact, build.prop rectifications date back to about 4 months ago.

So, where is the neat track that will improve the touch screen latency?

XDA told us they will share a neat trick that will improve touch screen latency for our phones. I want to ask where is that trick or did I miss something.
Something about switching to Conservative I think.
Touchscreen latency? Awww... I just ordered this phone, on friends recommendation, thinking it was smoother and snappier than S7 and HTC 10. Am I going to regret it?

Actually we can't say its smoother and snappier than both. Its faster. Its good device but.... sometimes its not.... One Plus only cares numbers.... They want all things in high number but sometimes......
But in my personal experience i found HTC 10 is smoother and snappier than this. If u prefer Camera then go with HTC 10 or S7.
Honestly I have never had an issue with touch latency.. Funny to say is that it has a better delay then most smartphones... I do recommend this device still over the HTC and S7 pure for how much you can multi-task on it.
I also haven't noticed anything bad. This is the first phone ever which can completely satisfy me. Normally I change my phones every few month, but I have my OnePlus3 since release last year ?
I'm a kind of person that usualy cycles thru 6-10 phones a year. I've already had S7 for half a year, a month with HTC10 and being satisfied with both (S7 desing and smallish display, HTC10's non AMOLED panel with artifacts) I decided to try 2016's prodigy - OP3. Got a nice bargain - new for 318,00 euros.
So many people in my surroundings told me all the best about this device, that the smoothness was just incredible. I've got to have that, I've got to!

I think you might be referring to setting the kernels big cluster to conservative. It seems counterintuitive, but I read a bit about it, tried it, and it seems to help a bit.
I have actually set my kernel settings on boeffla kernel to:
Little cluster: interactive - performance
Big cluster: conservative
I didn't have much touch latency/scroll lag before, but it was there. This setup works well for me.

Set little cores to interactive & set big cores to conservative and you will almost feel very snappy. Only rare strutters due to OOS beta I guess.

The phone itself is very smooth and dropped frames are minimal, on par with the HTC10 and app launching + thermals are the best of any android phone. With custom kernels this gets waaaaaayyyyy faster too.
Now the touch latency is a different story. It's not very noticeable in everyday use but it's just a bit higher compared to other 2016 flagships like the S7, HTC 10 and iPhone. ~80ms vs 25-40ms of those 3. Also the distance your finger needs to travel for a touch to be detected as a swipe is about 3mm where as the others is about 1mm. Not really important unless you need extreme precision in the touch screen for idk what reason.

One UI 2 Beta Animation Stutter

Have others noticed random Animation jankiness (stutter) through the interface?? Such as going back to the home screen, opening up the recent apps, launching an app from the home screen, etc... . US note 10+ unlocked running the latest beta 3.
At some points it's as fluid as an iPhone but then randomly I will see frame drops when doing the same thing. Could be any app. If this is just a beta issue then I'm fine, but if it behaves the same way when the final comes out, I might just get another phone.
Isn't this a common thing with Samsung phones? I have this issue randomly on my Note 10+ as well, running Android Pie. Same on my S10+. I'm very sensitive to this type of stuff so I definitely notice it.
No, it is not common, I understand your concern, I see these stutters in some other devices, (old ones
that I keep as secondary o emergency ) but this typically happens due to low ram
yeah i still get some stutters, but its gotten better each beta release. oneui 2 is still leagues better than every other samsung phone in terms of animation smoothness though. Samsung lag is pretty much gone, but there has always been some stutter when going to recent apps or going home... but i think samsung is working hard on this, just so that the s11's 120hz screen won't have this issue.
I'm surprised you didn't get a new phone to begin with. samsung phones are known for the features/bloat. if you want smooth, get a pixel or oneplus or iphone.
I have the official Android 10 (One UI 2.0) on my S10+ and it is definitely not smooth as one would expect. Many instances of choppy animations, dropped frames, microstutter, and lag. I factory reset the phone as well to remove any variables and the same issues persist. My Note 10+ running Android Pie is noticeably more smooth than the S10+ on the newest firmware. Here is hoping the official release for the Note 10+ will be a bit better.
Yes that's the same for me,
Also, between LockScreen and Always On display, the animation it's just terrible, it lags very very often.
I've tried to install other launchers, and the opening and closing animation is MUCH more fluid instead of the default one.
I've tried with my Note10+, and the stable version of Android 10 for Note
This is a shame indeed, I was really hoping that Samsung would work hard to fix this issue ugh. Let's hope the final one UI 2 release fixes this issue. One ui , 1 or 2, was supposed to address the old touchwiz lag issues but apparently not. I did hey a chance to play with the new pixel devices and they were smooth as butter. I was so tempted to get them but the battery issues reported stopped me from doing that. I'm definitely getting the s11 plus so hopefully that will be a better device but we will see I guess.

lag hasn't really existed for years. animation stutter is a separate thing imo. But yeah if you want the smoothest of animations, get a pixel/oneplus or iphone. I can't imagine s11 being perfect even with 120hz screen... but maybe oneui 2.1 solves all the problems.
I had my Galaxy note 10+ updated to Android 10 with one ui 2.0 and the recent apps animation is really bad, has anyone found a solution, it's almost unbearable switching apps.
Thanks in advance,
try enabling performance mode. it sure helps a lot. by default the "optimised" option is on and it only runs with 70% of the cpu power. Also dark mode "hides the stutter" much better. . dark apps open and close with better transitions. Its not the best but it helps a lot in my opinion

Disable accessability services, that should help.
People tends to say the same thing every year, every update.
“Disable this, disable and solve the situations”.
I have a OnePlus 7 pro, no lag even with all enabled. Same for iPhone 11.
Disabling things won’t make animation or lags less frequent, will only improve ram and cpu usage a little.
I definitely see issues with the animation when returning to home screen, but it's not a performance issue per se. It's almost like there is a double animation, first the normal one, but then it snaps back to showing the current app before showing the home screen. It looks super fugly.

I got the official Android 10 update for my Note 10+ on Verizon a couple days ago and it's quite laggy. My OnePlus6T runs way smoother. This phone has been pretty laggy since I bought it last September. I hadn't tried a Samsung in 3 years until the Note 10+ but I guess they still haven't learned how to make a phone run smoothly (I should have known better than to believe flossy carter). I'm quite disappointed in this phone tbh. I had high hopes and talked myself into keeping it, but in hindsight, I should have returned it.
I might do a factory reset soon to see if that helps. Pretty sad a device that cost $1100 doesn't run any better than a midrange device. I've also noticed more battery drain. The battery was epic on Android 9, and though it's still ok on 10, it has noticeably got worse.

I got the official Android 10 update for my Note 10+ on Verizon a couple days ago and it's quite laggy. My OnePlus6T runs way smoother. That $1000 phone have 1000 features, compare to 6T which is almost barebone stock Android. OnePlus UI base came from Cyanogen, very light system. OneUI is young UI in second version, future is bright

Disable accessability services, that should help.

The only accessibility service I have turned in is dashlane. Everything else is off.
For me, up to 4-5 apps there's no stutter in the animations, but after starting having more than 5 apps in the recent apps menu the lag starts and it gets worst with the increase of apps in recent apps menu.
Only Samsung to have this kind of thing in a flagship.

Actually, the issue is exactly with Dashlane. After you stop it I guarantee you that the issue will be resolved.
Apps like Dashlane and Keepass, when enabled with accessibility option, are always working on the background and checking every screen for possible data breach. Once you disable it, you will be reborn and the phone will be smooth as butter.

yeah i still get some stutters, but its gotten better each beta release. oneui 2 is still leagues better than every other samsung phone in terms of animation smoothness though.

If the 120hz screen is confirmed, then the stutters will be more noticeable. I don't really have them since i keep my phone pristine from bloat and take care of it as a baby, but I guess the random Samsung jaggyness can one day come back
