Quality feel (use of materials) - Honor 8 Real Life Review

Rate this thread to express how you think the Honor 8 feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Impeccable build quality. Cannot find any flaws.

Really well made phone, everything about it feels premium. I can't find anything negative to say about the build quality of this phone. I am planning to use this phone for more than 2 years so i hope the build quality will also stand the test of time, but i don't have any doubts about that so far.

excellent bulid quality

Are any of you using the phone without a case or screen protector? If so, how is the durability holding up? Does the back or screen scratch easily? This device was built beautifully and I hate to cover that beauty. But like some of you said, I want to keep it for a while too.

Gorilla glass so it won't scratch on your pocket. Use a clear case

I must say the Honor 8 is really sexy.

No.

Does anyone know how durable it actually is with regard to the back glass panel? If not for that concern I would've bought the phone already.

It feels premium, it is premium...the quality is good but even better with a hard cover and a tempered glass (it doesn't hurt to be safe) though i wouldn't try any bend, burn, scratch tests unless i had the money of course and alots of other phones

It screams premium, it doesn't look like its a 400$ phone, AT ALL

I don't have H8 but it looks very fragile..
I esitate to buy it because of that :/
Moreover, it doesn't have Gorilla Glass...

It has Gorilla Glass 3 on the front. I have no ideea what s on the back. And btw,a phone isn't made to throw it or play football with,so it's good enough.

Honor russia said its GG3 on the back too

The Honor 8 looks really nice, but I would strongly recommend getting a case to protect it. As it is probably very fragile like other glass and metal sandwich devices.

Not solid as it should be

Well there's multiple reviews but each person did there own test. Some put a good amount of application which protects the phone while others put hardly. There's one video that shows that even if the phone gets scratched you can wipe/buff it away.

Did read my post, some people put more application then others, he only put 2 sprays, and he is dealing with a plastic dummy phone instead of a glass.
This LIQUID-ARMOR work only on glass screen... Larry did it on plastic dummy phone, it will not work... It is not a fair comparison....
This stuff is crazy, the manufacture show this at Macworld in SF, it was one of the hot product show there.
i'm very interested in this stuff. i generally don't use screen protectors, they're more of a nuisance to me than anything else. this looks like a decent compromise.
has anyone else used the stuff?
Slade you are 100% correct.. They just need the exposure.. I have it on my phone and my wife's phone. Works amazing.. I seriously don't understand how well it handles..
The reviews on Youtube are not using glass screen like others said..
To be honest all these reviews are useless. No offence. Steel does not scratch glass. If you really want to test it, get some sand! Or sandpaper then see the results....
@nikz LMFAO.. GO take a steak knife to your One X and video it.. Tell me if you feel good doing it.
What a ridiculous response... Until you do that please don't post things that mean nothing.
Let me rephrase that most metals won't scratch glass, everyday metals that we'd commonly have in our pockets.
Things like sand that can get into pockets can scratch screens, so to determine if this product works they should test it with sand. Now if they did then we'd all get a good idea how useful it is.
And I don't eat steak so sorry can't test!

Yes indeed. Gorilla glass is already 7.0+ on the mohs hardness scale and won't be scratched by most metals especially brass that most keys use. High quality hardened steel would probably scratch it though. Ceramics, sand (quartz) also.

While that's true, Gorilla Glass does't have a 100% accurate strength, some phones with GG can survive daily active, while others have suffered with some serious scratches just by keys or coins. So yea its true GG is strong but its not always strong on everybody's phones.
I think this works, so long as you get a good amount of solution. At least from what I've seen on videos. Worst comes worst, the solution hardens and works but scratches but it scratches the solution which buffs off.
Best thing is one time fee and its universal.

How many of you really use Screen protectors and Cases..?!

i hate to use them their annoying especially SP's i have tried matte i liked it more than glossy ones cuz its anti glare buut.. picture quality is so **** with it.. and recently. i bought some from ebay..which say ULTRA CLEAR etc. BUT their not clear at all.... and i duno they look pretty bad so can someone please Suggest me some suuuper good Screen protector.?? not matte , normal one any link please...? or brand ... ? thanks in advance..
*Plus do we really have to use case and sp's....
I use screen protector and case from Belkin http://www.belkin.com/us/F8M137-Belkin/p/P-F8M137 and for the case http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=544797 and very satisfy with these .
I dont use any casing or screenprotector.. and my phone is still 99% scratch free.
Coz I treat my phone as my 12th finger. No need for rubbers
I use a case, but simply to prevent to camera lens from resting on whatever surface I am placing the phone on, the build quality doesn't warrant a case

For a case I've been using the Case Mate Tough for a while now, very good 2-layer protection and doesn't add as much bulk as say the Otterbox. I'm using a ghetto screen protector that I cut from a Playbook tablet protector I had laying around, works perfectly.

Screen protector and case
I use case mate pop for my phone as it's pretty useful for propping the phone up whilst watching videos/movies. Also I have a screen protector from media devil which is very high quality and I personally find it doesn't impair the viewing experience at all. The only thing is that it is noticeably less smooth to touch/swipe and also fingerprints stick much easier.
i have a really dirty job .. so my hands get dirty so i have a screen protector and a case ! Cant remember what the screen protector is called ,but it was bought from carphone warehouse . they are expensive but have a life time warranty. they are well worth every penny . its not peeled off or moved at all .

I used to have a case mate pop until I left it somewhere and the rubber melted.
I love the stand and I only buy cases that fully protects all edges, and come with a stand to boot.
Cons of the case mate pop: heavy. Stand gets loose with use. Probably can add a little super glue to stiffen it.
I found another case that is more a two piece plastic with silicone interior to replace it. It's lighter and has a stand too.

Sand will destroy any glass screen no matter what, it's the nature of sand. Do a Google search for Mohr's scale of relative hardness, a harder substance will always scratch a softer one.

Zagg is extremely durable, that's the good thing about it. It's very hard to damage, and it seems to be self-healing to some degree. Excellent protection, for sure. However, there are two things that I personally don't like about it. First, its surface is not completely flat and smooth -- it's slightly textured and kinda "bumpy". It's not a huge problem, but is a bit annoying sometimes, depending on the viewing angle. Second, it doesn't have a smooth glide feeling of a glass or some other SPs -- the surface has some friction and "catches" a finger, for the lack of a better description. Oh, and the price -- it's pretty darn expensive... I used it on my previous phone (it still has it installed), but I will not buy it again.

I really like XtremeGuardz. They are durable and don't get that scrubbed look after some wear. Grab a couple when they are on sale. Also, they have a slightly cushioned "rubbery" feel I enjoy. Some don't though. They self-heal somewhat also.

It'll be interesting to see those. They'll probably only cover a middle portion of the screen minus the edges, given that it has a "2.5D" display.

The vid I watched showed a screen protector inside the box when he took it out of there. It was in China, so not sure if the US is going to get the same things inside the box, but it's nice to know they throw one in. Also, not sure of the quality, but still... It's the thought that counts, right? LOL!

Skinomi's got their TPU screen protectors out, both matte and HD clear. Not their tempered glass yet though. Their skin films are shipping late this month.
Flexible TPU works a lot better with 2.5d glass, if you can deal with the feel of it. Personally, I prefer it over glass, my finger seems to glide much more smoothly on the TPU material, probably due to the slight orange peel (glass offers up too much friction).

No i haven't really seen that much, that said we should go and ask dbrand to make some sweet custom skins for us for us to buy
( i already asked if they plan on doing it they said no cause there's no high demand for it so lets make some demands !!!)
I asked ZeroLemon if they planned to make a battery case for it and they said no. Bummer as I have used them in the past when I was going to be without a charger for a while. Not something I used every day, but handy to have when needed.
Had a quick email from SPIGEN regarding AXON 7 cases , they state " we do not have any information about this item at the moment." . . So they are a no go at this time .

As per manufacturer - Type:Front Film
And again - "...Glass Screen Protector..". so it is protector for glass screens....
Honestly why would you get gorilla glass screen in the first place if you want to put on some plastic on it?
Gorilla glass has enough scratch protection and if you plan to abuse your phone then this is not the type of phone in the first place. The film type screen protectors drop protection has always been controversial and questionable.
It's like getting a new car and putting some clothes on it to not scratch the paint and to not chip the windshield...
It's the question of "refreshness". You put $2-3 glass on top of Gorilla (which is not so scratch-resistable in fact) and trash it after 3-5 month, got new glass and fresh new screen. In case of no protector the only option you have is new LCD assembly at $50? (or fake china "compatible" LCD with poor colors and backlight). According to the fact that 3-layer glass (original gorilla+silicone adhesive+protective glass) will be definitely stronger comparison to LCD only, that's the reason to choose.
But i agree with you, >$200 phone is not the price you'll have to put a case in a case while in carrying pouch to protect it like a treasure.
I got the same case. Very nice quality. The only thing I don't like is the rough inside surface. Hopefully it won't scuff the back of the phone. It also seems slightly thicker than my other plain black case.
Got the same case good quality. Cloth back solves the problem that the bare phone is SUPER slippery and will slide off a perfectly flat surface.
Are there any problems with pressing side buttons and plugging earphones?
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Xiaomi-Mi-A1-case-cover-mi5x-back-cover-silicone-edge-fabric-shockproof-case-coque-MOFi-original/32853695069.html
I wonder how that compares to it.
How are the buttons with this case, I have one from silicon as well and they are really hard to press.

Ceramic vs Glass drop test

Take it with a grain of salt, but I'll admit I thought ceramic was more brittle than that.
Ceramic pottery and such, but they make things like body armor from ceramic as well.

They're designed to shatter and isolate projectiles in the process, still I didn't expect the back glass to be less durable than ceramic in that case, it must be either very well implemented or just luck.
Now all we need is transparent ceramic!

Exactly as @Corv0 said, ceramic used in a vest is pretty much a one shot deal, regardless of caliber. I used to wear level 3 when I was enlisted and even though it was rated up to a 7.62 NATO round, a 9mm would still crack it and in result would not be effective at a level 3 rating anymore, nor provide much protection at all.
But back to the topic at hand, I need to find a teardown video to see how the thickness compares to the glass. Maybe it's thinner? I'm trying to think of the physics behind it along with the material properties. For instance, gorilla glass can survive longer than standard glass because of its flexibility, among other things. I don't see ceramic having that property unless it is thinner. But thinner also makes me think that it would definitely break at the 5+ foot drop level... I could just be over analyzing it and it could have just been dumb luck or how she dropped the phone since it's near impossible to be scientifically consistent.
