OEM skin/software - Honor 8 Real Life Review

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the Honor 8. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it adds just the right amount of features, it's visually pleasing, and overall it's additive to the experience. If this is a Nexus phone (you didn't think we hand-wrote all of these prompts, did you?) then use this rating to indicate how the latest version of Android looks to you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Don't like EMUI much, but you get used to it. Plus, using a custom launcher + a theme helps.

It is average, though I went in with a very low expectation somewhere around a one, but came out thinking "oh this is not that bad".
All I will say is if those of you, like me, who never used the UI....you will be pleasantly surprised actually. First thing I did was removed the aweful launcher without the app draw...not my cup of tea. With another 3rd party launcher, it is not bad at all but can definitely get better.
The simplest things such as finding out your SOT comes with steps too many...especially if you are not familiar with the UI...I had to ask how to locate my SOT.

emui is a bit step back from stock android, even thought there a lot of added features.
for material glory just try this.
i have tried maximum to make it look like aosp.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/themes/theme-material-vui-material-design-t3441165

If it gets support from XDA I won't care about the UI (yup, I am a flashaholic).
But, I used a p8 lite before, although it is very far from material design and pure android, it has some nice features

Was a little hesitant at first to buy this phone because of EMUI, but after reading a lot of reviews i actually started to like EMUI and i find it to be a nice skin, some reviews made me believe it was actually the worst piece of software you could get....but reading real life reviews made me feel exactly the other way round. Now that i am using it is really not bad at all and i like the extras Honor put in to it. I also looked up a preview of EMUI 5 before buying the Honor 8 and that looks even better so i definitely think Honor is going in the right direction. Seeing the preview of EMUI 5 and the fact that it will come to the Honor 8 together with Android 7 really convinced me to get this phone.

emui 5 really looks promising:fingers-crossed:

At 1st was hesitant about purchasing due to review regarding emui but Damn gotta say I love the skin plus love how easily to customize. No complaints

yes, its customisable plus has lots of added feautures compared to other skins

I actually like EMUI, it's not bad. The power-saving features are nice, IMO. I tend to install a LOT of apps and it tells me specifically which ones are using a lot of power, even as far as to say how many mAh each app uses. That is impressive. I like that the OS itself can rein in these apps, prevent them from running in the background, prevent them from showing notifications, etc. It's more seamless than having to use a 3rd party app like Greenify to do that. I don't mind having to open up the app settings and change a few toggle switches for the apps I use the most.
The launcher, on the other hand... I will not use the built-in launcher. Even the 'advanced' version is too simplistic and iphone-like for me to tolerate. So I use Nova Launcher and I loaded the settings from my previous phone so it looks exactly the same, the way I like it.
The one thing that I do miss, coming from an LG phone, is the clip tray. When you copy text to clipboard, it pops up a little window showing the last 20 things you have copied. EMUI does not seem to have any feature like that, but I am using Clipper Plus app to try to do the same thing. It just doesn't have the popup window part.

I think i'm the only person in the world that likes EMUI. I read everywhere that people hate it.
The UI is simple and nice. I personally hate all graphically similarity with google (so 2000)

I agree. I thought I'd hate it, but really surprised with how easy it was to adjust. I actually really like how aggressive the battery management is.

I hope Honor will make a more distinct skin rather than imitating iOS.

What makes Windows Phone 7 interface look better than the iOS or WebOS?

Its simplicity is incredible. And the response time is great. Back to the basics and I'm loving my new HTC Surround.
I'm really diggin the simple look. I just came from Android and its homescreen(s) were kinda cool but just not for me. I only used one screen with no widgets and like 4 apps on the homescreen. It was so laggy when swiping from screen to screen I just didnt want to use that many.
I like how on WP7 when you swipe through stuff it feels like you are actually moving it. It's browser is also insane. I'm loving WP7.

No you cant. The Metro themes are totally crap. People Hub, Pictures hub, Music/Video hub all sections in WP7 are part not only the Live Tiles. There is no good metro theme out there.
I find the UI to elegant and classy. Simple yet stylish. Highly responsive and smooth. It's unique in this world of cookie-cutter smartphone UIs.
I think it looks better than iOS, but worse than WebOS. WebOS just looks really good, IMO.
Can't wait til HP releases a phone with a 4.0" screen (SLCD or AMOLED). I'm definitely going to get it. That platform is more finished and if they update it at a decent pace I have high hopes for it.
As long as they move away from the whole "Palm Profile" bullcrap.

What I like about WP7 is the simple yet fast In-&-Out factor.

You can theme iOS and Android to have a Tiles look but that is pretty much it. Correct me if I am wrong but in iOS the tiles are not live, and I think neither are the Android ones. Also missing are the animated transitions, and the hubs.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
What makes WP7 UI good is a result of several factors:
1. It is new and different.
2. It has a minimalist design which is popular nowadays.
3. It is efficient with space and effective in delivery of information.
I suspect that this is where Apple needs to take iOS 5. And funny enough, clean is what best describes Apple products, so to see Windows have the cleanest OS is surprising. Metro UI really works and works well without visual overload.
Is it the best? Depends on who you ask. But it is different and works well. I think it is far better than the rest.
there are iOS themes where the tiles are indeed live and the theme is still evolving every day, it's not 100% like WP7 but better IMO because you can actually change aspects that you can't change on WP7, you can also theme it like Android with actual Sense weather animations and other cool things like video wallpapers, any video you want, you can actually make your own, or like the Nexus LWP (although touching the screen doesn't do anything sadly).
iOS is very much able to be themed and IMO comparing the UI of a system that is admittedly smooth and sleek but unchangeable to 2 others that can be themes almost exactly like it and about a thousand other ways makes them look better.

Androids rendition, despite my respect for the developers, is not a very thorough attempt. The animations are bad, there are no live tiles, it's laggy (of course that's all UIs on android), most of the apps are just terrible as icons(not that that's their fault either, the apps weren't made to be put on a tile) and once you break the skin it's just android... iOS did a fairly good job of it, it's smooth, it's pretty, but every time I see one of the basic iOS menu pop-ups I die a little inside and as good as iOS can be I just wish they'd put it out on a phone that's big enough for those of us with big hands. WM did an awesome job recreating it though, you can even get a few of the hubs to come up though none of the integration is really there.
Basically it's this
The other Oses look like plasticky candy. They remind me of Linux on the desktop.
Windows uses a phrase "authentically digital".. it means the content is actually just digital content and they don't try to make it look like wood or glass or chrome or other real-world objects like that. Typography is what's used to communicate concepts and tasks, and sets the UI apart.
The result?: Everything feels breezy, light, airy, clean. Apps can be very very slick (colorful like Flickr or Cocktail Flow or DailyMotion). They can also be very basic, nothing but text on a blank background, and yet somehow still be beautiful (I think Weatherbug's simple UI looks better than Weather Channel with it's backgrounds and gradients). This is good for developers.

I stand corrected then on the Live Tiles with iOS. They also have animated transitions? They definately do not have hubs though.
Live Tiles are nice, but only a part of the experience. I would imagine with enough effort you could get relatively close but not identical.

true enough, but the point is the versatility of iOS and Android in comparison with WP7, you can't 100% emulate, but to come that close and then have 1000 other options when you get bored of Metro in two weeks.
I think the fact that the emphasis is on how "smooth" the UI is (and it is smooth) is kind of like saying
"well this car looks just a little like yours but not quite 100% the same, but hey it flies and makes tacos and time travels while yours only drives in one direction on the street"
Metro to me looks like a Tetris game for the visually impared.
But maybe that's just me.

lol...but who has the time, energy, and desire to do all the jailbreaking, downloading, and updating that would require? The Metro UI is by far my favorite, and all I had to do to get the best, original version of it was to open the box of my WP7 and turn it on. I'm pretty sure most consumers are going to buy a phone based on what it IS rather than what it could be.

What a brilliant point. If I'm driving a car, I only want it to drive in one direction at a time on a street. If it does all that other stuff, it isn't for the majority of folks looking to buy cars.
If this theme:

would be released, it´s the perfect harmony between the simple stuff of the tiles and an elegant look with a little individuality.

That's cause the developers are bad. But if you don't think a company like SPB Mobile can't replicate Metro on Android I dunno what to say.
There would probably be patent issues with that, though. Microsoft has Patents on elements of the Metro UI, so those rip-offs may not even be legal...

I'm honestly excited obviously for vanilla ICS, but what I'm really excited about is what HTC is gonna do with sense 4.0 (as stated in another thread). They haven't failed to amaze yet (at least those who are sense fans) and I can't see how they'd let anyone down on the new functionalities of ICS.
I'm interested in sense ICS as well. Some sense Roms are a hit or miss to me so I'm excited to see how it would turn out.

What's movie studio really going to do? I would personally never use my smartphone for editing more than a pic in photoshop express, much less try to touch up video.
For multi-format playback, I use MX Player with the Arm v7 codec for hardware acceleration. There is nothing that I've found that it can't play.

It's not so much about that as being able to touch up videos on the go. I consider imovie to be one of the top features on the iPhone and this will satisfy that need. It will basically turn the camcorder from a fun little gadget to a usable and valuable tool!

Am I the only one who's really not terribly impressed with ICS? Actually pretty unimpressed overall? Of course, I want to clarify that by saying that I'm referring to the actual OS, not the current port to our phone. The guys working on that have done am amazing job.
But for the actual OS, I'm just not seeing what's so groundbreaking. I think the only feature I see that's actually nice is the auto-creation of folders. Aside from that, everything else is either ho-hum, or catch-up features.
-Scrollable and realizable widgets have existed on alternate launchers forever now. Nice to finally have them natively, but not terribly exciting.
-New app drawer layout is OK, but again, nothing groundbreaking. Moving all the widgets inside the drawer seems more inefficient than long-pressing on a home screen, especially if you have to scroll through several pages of widgets to locate your desired one.
-Face Unlock is a nice trick, but again, inefficient (or downright useless) for those who don't secure their phones in the first place. A quick flick of the thumb is hard to top as far as speed and ease go.
-NFC? Well, our phone doesn't have it to begin with, but even if it did, it's usefulness is pretty limited for the foreseeable future. How many times do you really transfer files between Android phones?
-The new UI, personally, I find pretty ugly. It's almost a total lack of any style, it's all lines and solid boxes. I suppose that's a style in itself, but I can't say it's a terribly pleasing one.
-The new search widget is now plastered on the top of every home screen, can only be removed by disabling the Google Search app, and upon doing so, you still can't reclaim the space used by the widget for icons or other widgets. I barely search on my phone enough to justify the current widget being placed on a single home screen, so to have one permanently on every screen is a PITA.
-The new camera features are nice, but at the end of the day, it's a camera phone. If I'm looking to take real photos, I'll use a real camera.
I don't know, the more useable the devs get their port, the more I've had a chance to play with ICS, and the more I'm convinced that, far from eliminating the need for carrier overlays, in my opinion, ICS actually makes them more valuable and necessary than they are today.
I honestly hate to say this, because I had been very much looking forward to it, but to me, the new UI just feels extremely unfinished and unimaginative, and the OS overall doesn't seem to break any new ground whatsoever.
I can't see HTC being able to do much with the ICS. Their brand recognition seems to rely on that huge weather clock and that general layout of sense that they have been using on every phone now. I can't see a lot of these "signature" stuff translating well into ICS, since most of it relies heavily on the gingerbread rom, which ICS seems to diverge quite a lot from.

Not sure I follow you. They can still build all their widgets for ICS, they can still replace the launcher with a Rosie'd version - a big phone button at the bottom with web and customize buttons on either side, and they can still skin the overall UI - the notification bar, icons, etc.
I just don't see how ICS, in any way, eliminates or negates the value manufacturers see in their overlays. And as the new UI aesthetics is unarguably more "love it or hate it" than previous versions of Android, I actually see overlays being even more attractive to the average consumer who might be comparing an Android phone to an iPhone.

WP On A Galaxy Note Is Awesome...

Using L7 to replicate my beloved Metro. The extra space is phenomenal for the interface.
I used to do it with my Galaxy S. launcher, sms app, twitter app... everything I could find on metro, I would use.
Then I got the Lumia and believe me, there's no styling on Android that will ever make it resemble the actual thing. It's way more than just a theme.

I agree with everything you said.
Launchers aren't a good representation of another OS, specially not WP7.
Obviously a launcher can't reproduce an ecosystem...however I'm pretty sure that this fall we'll be able to see some huge Apollo device with an HD screen, basically a WP Note. I doubt that Samsung will drop the ball on that after Win8 and Apollo launch, assuming that it will look promising. Oh well, just wait and see

Heh, I know but that's what WP UI is all about IMHO...
Also the way everything is rendered is quite different, apparently Android and WP run in a very different way. What I really like about the WP UI is how everything "flows" in a very natural way, and how the apps (at least most of em) feel like melting into the OS when you open or close them. It feels kinda like a "living being" more than a software thing, if you get what I mean. I'm not really talking about fluidity here, because probably a GS3 is more fluid and operates way faster than any WP device, it's the whole experience as it's packed that gives you overall a different, warmer feeling. That's what I think out of my broken mind at least

Some of that does work, yes. But for myself, right now, I need to use Android. This is a nice reminder of one of my favorite OS and a proof of concept on a high resolution large screen WP seriously rocks.

That's what I think out of my broken mind at least

yep, got it. guess it depends on just how deep into the UI / app interactions one goes. on the surface, very similar. as soon as an app is opened, they fall apart in similarities.
then again, alllll the apps are different on android/ios.

Anyone coming from the oneplus 7pro? What are your thoughts missing anything?

Just checking anyone coming from oneplus 7 pro. Are you missing anything and what are your thoughts with regards to the performance of the phone and in hand feel?
There are a couple of things that I notice/miss from my OP 7 Pro, screen smoothness I definitely notice, the other is I occasionally get a stutter (I am using lawnchair v2 beta so this could be the reason). With that aside I have not even turned on my OP since I received my Note 10+.

? So why have you not turned on the oneplus ?
I had a OnePlus 7 Pro and a S10+, the OnePlus sat on my desk most of this time I owned it, sold it last week. While the OnePlus was smooth the in-hand feel absolutely killed the phone for me. I have large hands and that phone always felt like it was about to fall.
It's just not as nice in the hand as the S10+ or the Note 10+ even through the Note 10+ has a bigger screen.
This is coming from somebody who's owned almost every OnePlus phone made and the last Samsung I own was the Note 4.
Other than the 90hz display and the ever-so-slightly higher overall performance, I have only tinkered with the OP7Pro to try out the open Android Q beta.
While I don't think the Note10+ 5G is leaps and bounds beyond the OP7Pro, I prefer the slightly wider screen, additional Knox features, always on display, fast(ish) wireless charging, Dex over USB in Windows 10 and of course the 5G radio when I'm in Atlanta to play with stupidly fast speed tests lol.
Am missing mostly root and the ability to use themes for all apps like Gmail etc. It's a right pain looking at that white screen and there aren't any options to them all apps without root I assume?

With Synergy you can theme using Substratum themes without root. I'm all blacked out using Synergy, Substratum Lite, and Swift Black.
You dont need root to theme

This is absolutely amazing stuff! Thanks a lot. To be honest there is absolutely no need to root and the oneplus 7pro. I can now theme most apps and also use blokada to bloke all adds so am pretty much chuffed and defo won't miss the oneplus 7 Pro...

Yeah, when I bought my S10+, Snapdragon version, I was a little weary about buying a non rootable phone but with all the customization you can do on them nowadays there's really no reason to root anymore.
Hmmm... Can't decide between Hex and Synergy. Anyone recommend one over the other for theming?
I miss the 90hz screen refresh rate and phone size was perfect for me on the oneplus 7 pro. After a few days i got use to the note 10 again but i had the exynos/snapdragon variant. I recommend getting the snap version its faster then the exynos but of course you dont have the root options

I recommend Hex. Couldn't never get Synergy to work properly.
Only thing I miss is the screen smoothness. I have exynos version of note10+ 5g. Sucks to be in Europe. But unlike s10 exynos this updated one feels a lot faster. Oneplus still very slightly faster at opening apps but not as significantly as it was when compared to S10.
In overall I do enjoy note I just wish it had slightly rounded corners.

Have tried synergy but having some issues and not sure if these are related to the app or our note 10. For the life of me I can't seem to theme both the status bar and apps. I can only either theme the status bar notifications shade and not the apps or the apps and not the status bar, no matter what I do! Any suggestions as this is what I want to theme
I miss the completely full screen experience of the 7 Pro (i.e. no camera cut out meaning I could stretch videos as much as I wanted).
I slightly miss 90Hz refresh, although I still maintain this is a bit of a gimmick feature until frame rates make it more worthwhile.
I don't miss the weight of the 7 Pro.
I don't miss the complete lack of firmware updates for the 5G "flagship" variant
I don't miss a camera that couldn't focus properly
I don't miss having to plug my phone into a cable every night because OnePlus "don't believe" in wireless charging
I don't miss being scared anytime the phone was near water (a sink etc.) because OnePlus think IP ratings are "unnecessary"
I don't miss phantom screen touches and random OS crashes making me reboot the phone almost daily

The Note 10+ does not weigh more than the OnePlus 7 Pro.
Note 10+ = 196g
OnePlus 7 Pro = 206g

General What you gonna do after the death of OxygenOS?

With the release of OxygenOS 13 for the OP9Pro the OxygenOS we know of is dead, since it becomes Color OS and "we take community feedback" is a LiE
what u gonna do OP9Pro owners?
What do you mean by that?
OxigenOS or ColorOS Or whatever it is, for me it's the same thing, as long as it's stable and smooth, I don't even care about the system "skins".
I already made the switch to a cstum rom. And lucky me. The Pixels are now available in my country
Oxygen OS 13 is pretty good actually. I've only encountered some minor bugs and the performance is better than I had on OOS11 (I skipped 12 entirely), which is amazing considering it's the first open beta version.
Get an iPhone 14 Pro.
Edit: done. What a breath of fresh simplistic air lmao

I am still going to have my 9 but I'm trading in my old iPhone 12 Pro Max which results in Best Buy basically paying me $30 to take the 7 Pro after the $200 gift cards and $790 in trade in value. Was kind of a no-brainer.

I have an 11 currently and my 9 Pro. I'm gonna fix the back glass on my 11 and see if I can use it as a trade-in for the 14 Pro, or just buy it outright. Once I found out AppleCare+ allows for unlimited accidental damages, that was a no-brainer for me. I'll still hold onto my 9 Pro for development reasons though. The Pissel 7 Pro is ugly af and Apple has come a long way since the jailbreaking days. Plus the peace-of-mind for AC+ is nice since I work in the construction field. Plus the new design is super sexy to me and the squareness of the device is nice cause it gives me something to grip onto without having to feel like I have to throw a case on it.

I can't do Apple anymore. I switched back to my 12 Pro Max for a couple weeks to see and I just can't do it. The OS is so far behind Android in stock features, let alone the ability for third party apps to add new ones.

I can understand that. It's just sometimes it's nice to have some simplicity. If I have a device that's development friendly like the 9 Pro, it's hard not to tinker and do things with it. It's just when things go wrong, that's when it becomes a pain. When I went from nameless to oos11 then back to nameless, I soft-bricked my device and threw it in a drawer until the weekend came so I had more time to mess with it and used my iPhone 11 in the meantime and it was a breath of fresh air. The OS literally drives me up a wall, but their optimizations both software and hardware are unmatched compared to Android. I'm a features guy when it comes to custom ROMs. To me, oos11 had it all. Once I tried oos12 and found out it didn't have a hex code color picker in customization settings, I went back to oos11. Yes, it's little things like that that make me go back to and earlier version lol.
Not gonna lie, Apple is night and day when it comes to point and shoot photography. Plus the LiDAR scanner would come in handy for work, and Dynamic Island (dumb name) is pretty fricken sweet. I've always been into the design of iPhones, and when they went back to the old form factor, I lost my ****. Plus the matte glass is sexy too lol.
TL;DR: when you want a device to work without having to fiddle with anything, Apple kills it. Especially if you like simple things once in awhile.

Yep, I agree with most of your points. I have lost count of how many times I had to MSM my 9 from messing with it lol. Fortunately OOS13 has been pretty okay even on the first open beta, but unless the 7 Pro has some major issues for me, the OnePlus 9 is going to be relegated to my backup phone.
One thing I will say though - Apple doesn't do point and shoot better than Google. Google's AI makes a massive difference with their camera prowess and it's something they have done right from the start. Even with inferior hardware, the camera in my 3 XL almost always took a better looking photo than my 12 Pro Max unless I tweaked the settings (and who wants to mess with all that, especially with Apple's infuriating camera menu system where half of it is in the Settings app, when they can have a phone that you pull out of your pocket, double tap the power button, snap, and have a great picture the first try 99% of the time) or I had to zoom in while taking it.
The inability to even install Kodi on an iPhone is an issue for me. I shouldn't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to sideload apps onto a device I paid for.
Also, you *STILL* can't space icons however you want on the home screen... >_>
I will switch to pixel...
After so many years with OnePlus I know for sure that opo9pro is my last open plus phone. They screwed it.
One of the main reasons that I stick with Oneplus is the Software, Camera, and most importantly the developer support. But things have changed now. Switching ROMs is a hard thing these days. Wiping the entire storage and reinstalling all the apps is time-consuming and irritating.
I just remember the good old days of flashing through TWRP and just restoring all the apps using titanium single-click restores......
Next phone will be most probably an Apple

Honestly digging my new Pixel 7 Pro a lot. For being the first software version, it's far less buggy than my 9 has ever been and I have yet to have a single delayed or missed notification plus the camera is incredible.
