How to test out Mobile HDR? - Note 7 Questions & Answers

So I finally got my Note 7 and it's awesome so far.
One of the biggest feature they were showing was Mobile HDR games and videos.
Games with Vulkan input have HDR. BUT haven't found any.
Netflix and Amazon Prime said they're going to have available HDR movies and shows. BUT also haven't found any. ( Netflix shows HD and not even UHD. I do have the highest subscription plan. Amazon Prime only shows HD.)
Lastly I even downloaded some HDR 4K movie trailers and they don't work. (They do play, but colors are inaccurate because HDR isn't working.)
Any of you guys have successfully tried HDR?

I tried this too. Supposedly shows like The Man in High Castle is hdr but I can't tell the difference.

it may be filmed in HDR but Amazon has to make the app capable of playing HDR on mobile.

This and ask those games they promised are AWOL. The game pack was supposed to be out yesterday, nothing. No news on any of the major sites about it either. Kinda disappointing.
Sent from my Samsung Note 7

Phonearena is saying:
NETFLIX~
"Important note: The Galaxy Note 7 is not listed as an officially supported title on NETFLIX'S Q&A site for HDR, meaning you might not be able to stream HDR content to it yet. I've reached out to Samsung for clarification and a potential ETA."
Amazon Prime~
"At this time, there doesn't seem to be a special category that will automatically compile a list of all HDR titles, which is obviously not ideal. A blanket search for "HDR" works, however, and there's already a list of titles circulating the web. Another way to tell if a title is HDR-compatible is to watch for the little badge that says HDR."
Games~
"IDK"
Samsung~
"???*"

The games that use thr vulkan api are need for speed no limits (just got addicted to this) H.I.T heroes of incredible something and theres one other MOBA style game. Found them on YouTube, NFSNL being my favorite. Quality is definitely there.

Just spoke with an Amazon Rep and....
Edit: I did manage to download a UHD HDR video from Samsung but honestly... I can't tell the difference between the "HDR" and non-"HDR" video. Looks the same as it does on my Note5 :| Maybe it's not true HDR or not playing in HDR. Idk. Feel like Samsung should really sort this out if one of their main selling points is the "HDR" screen.
Just spoke with an Amazon rep and yeah, QHD, UHD and HDR are not currently supported on the Note7 so it just plays in HD (1080p) with no HDR. I really wanted to see it's HDR capabilities too :/ I was initially comparing the Note5's screen to the Note7's with "HDR" content from the Amazon Prime app but noticed that they looked exactly the same. Like... exactly the same. Made me think that it wasn't really in HDR and yep, sure enough, that is the case. Just sucks that the app (and Samsung) is advertising them in HDR on the note7 when they're really not... and that it only plays in HD even if you DOWNLOAD the videos to your phone -_- way to go, Amazon... (sarcasm obviously).
You would think that they would at least include an HDR video WITH the phone so you can preview the HDR screen. Would even be better if they included an HDR video and a non-HDR video so you could be like, "oh my wooow the difference is so amaze!"
Anyway... here's a list of the Amazon Video app's supported devices for UHD and HDR as of 08/21/2016:
2015/16 Samsung SUHD TVs (JS8500, JS9000, JS9100, JS9500, KS9800, KS9500, KS9000, KS8500, KS8000, KS7500 and KS7000)
2015/16 Sony ‘Triluminos’ 4K TVs (x850c, x900c, x910c, x930c, x940cx, 800d, x850d, x930d and x940d)
2015/16 LG TVs (EF9500, EG9500, EG9600, UH9500, UH8500, UH7700, UH7500, OLEDG6P and OLEDE6P)

I've been wondering this myself
My brother has a 85" LG HDR 4k TV so I pretty much know all the titles that have HDR.
You need to be on the 11.99 netflix plan to view HDR, and the *ONLY* title Netflix has that supports HDR currently is Marco Polo.
Amazon has a few, try either One Mississippi or Transparent. And make sure you choose the one that says "UHD" under the title. I'm not even sure you will be able to see those selections unless you are on a 4k TV/device supported by Amazon..
so who knows.

This one you chose isn't the HDR version. This is the regular version. Amazon's 4k selection is separate from its other selections which complicates everything.
You need to find the version that has UHD under the "Prime" label. It's VERY VERY difficult to find.

Ok found this by searching via Google "man in High Castle Amazon hdr" which lead me to Amazon and added it to my watch list. So it now shows on my Amazon video app watch list. Notice it says Ultra HD so this is not a standard version. I don't see a difference. Not that I really care about hdr on phones but just pointing it out to help OP
fyi: searching with key word "ultra HD" in the mix is better then using "hdr" it seems like.

HD Netflix App

****4.0.3 users - it is not currently working on most 4.0.3 builds. I will look into it****
I take 0 credit for this file, but I have rehosted and used it myself. Here is the 1080P Version of the Netflix app.
*im sorry about the first file. Mediafire seems to have botched the original file on upload. Ive triple checked the MD5. Confirmed working on a LTE Nexus on 4.0.2

The app does NOT go full screen like the market version of the Netflix app, but the quality is 10x better. For a test I watched both Tron and Toy Story 3 for 5 minutes each on both apps to allow enough time to buffer. There is no graininess on the HD app and it just pops more. Test both out and see the difference!
* I believe this is from the RAZR but dont quote me on that
I did some HD and Non-HD testing. Now Im running a LTE Nexus on 4.0.2 w/Revolutionary 2.1.0. Ive seen issues with the GSM Nexus not being able to install, but it works perfect on mine. No issues, which is weird. But heres some HD and Non HD photos for comparison:

Not to troll, but why would you want a 1080p source on a 720p screen?
I would want a 720p stream
the current one is just okay resolution wise, and has the buttons active instead of going full screen...
I don't understand why there are so many versions of the app... And why us international customers need to download the app from random links in forums. Instead of blocking in market they should (if they have to) block only in app, and people wouldn't risk malicious apps that steal login details. This only creates trouble for themselves.
Offtopic kind of, but since market enabler isn't working anymore (right?) how do people get apps from other regions without relying on someone to upload to the forum? Is there a trick?

I would think it is better to downscale 1080p to 720p than upscale 480p to 720p.

Mine won't even start up. Screen goes black for a split second, then goes away.
Perhaps it has something to do with the Verizon service.
If someone could take it apart, I'm sure they'd remove the Razr specific resolution and Verizon requirements. Thus make it work for all phones on all networks.
Perhaps post this in the General "Android Development" thread with a request to look at it.

Just like was mentioned, you get better quality when running a 1080p stream and running it on 720 then you do from 480 to 720. I don't know if it bothers everyone but the graininess killed my Netflix experience on the nexus. I'm happy its working for me. But is anyone on a GSM running revolutionary rom? I'm also on 4.0.2

I don't think Netflix does 1080p streams... HD by definition is 720p. So perhaps it is just displaying the movie in it's native form.
Although really, having a HD 4" screen with 300+ DPI, I'm surprised if the 480p movie doesn't look steller.
Posted up and new file. I believe the File got corrupted on the upload. Ive triple checked the MD5 this time. Try it out and let me know!!!

Its only seems to want to stream at 720p, it definitely is not streaming at 1080p and i'm verifying that by looking at my hdtv which shows some minor pixelation (enough to tell me that it's trying to upscale), but definitely an improvement over the stock app

What's The Point in 720p Front Cam If It Only Transmits Videochat in 320x240?

I traded my S2 for a Galaxy Nexus because I read that the GNexus front cam supports 720p videochat.
Well I just found out that it only supports 720p video RECORDING, not video CHAT. I tested in Skype over WiFi and it transmitted in 320x240, which is much worse than the S2 transmitted at! Same result with Google Chat!

Terminators run on Android
I can't see any Video chat allowing 720p. For a conference, thats 2 HD video streams (in and out). Your not going to be getting the bandwidth required for that kind of streaming
That would require each member to have TWICE that to send and receive. Plus how networking works, you'd bounce between so many servers that there is no way to guarantee that kind of bandwidth.
Streaming video is much different then streaming live service. Quality of Service is very important here to make sure Video and Audio sync up on the fly. It can't "buffer" minutes ahead (time travel?).
This is why most Video Conference are limited to 320x240 or (at most) 640x480. [email protected] is considered pretty good.
The higher the resolution the choppier it will be. And if your looking for a HD slideshow, then video conferencing isn't the best option. Trust me, when your away from your family for a few weeks, you'll take any resolution.
720p capability of the Front Camera is mostly related to taking stills and local recording.

To play a 4k content it is not mandatory to have a 4k UHD tv. My 2 year old dell n5110 can play the Elysium 4k trailer smoothly.
It is not mandatory either to have a 4k display phone to record or view 4k content. If the gpu (/ +cpu) is optimized to play a 4k content why should I bother watching it on N3. The S3 has 720p screen, does it refrain the S3 from shooting or playing 1080p content?
Hell no.

You sir have completely lost your mind. 4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160. The Samsung Galaxy note 3 has a resolution of 1920×1080. The note 3 will probably have somewhere of around 2 million pixels as a standard 1080p tv does. The 4k tv's have over 8 million pixels. While the note 3 will be able to shoot 4k resolution (3840 pixels × 2160) of the camera, the max resolution of the screen (1920×1080) can't display a higher resolution than what it's given. If the camera even on your phone shoots 1080p and the resolution on the screen is 720p then no the screen can't display the full 1080p resolution of the video. The cpu and gpu can support the shooting and playing of the video, but the screen resolution limits it and you are not watching it in 4k. If that was the case then there would be no 720p screens, 1080p screens, or 4k screens. Your right on the part of not a lot of people have 4k tv's. Most people I even mention it to don't know what 4k is.
^ what he said.
You need a 4k display to view content in 4k. It's like hooking up a blu ray player to an old CRT TV - yeah, it will work, but you won't be seeing the content in 1080p HD. I guess it's cool that they are future proofing the Note by making it capable of shooting 4k video, but realistically, it will be useless for most people.
It's my understanding from talking to.a Samsung rep that it does not record in 4k but rather upconverts the video for 4k playback
I could.have misunderstood this.but 100% he specifically used the word upconvert.
Just confirmed it does 4k.

60 fps videos

Hey guys,
does anyone know if it's possible to record @ 60 fps with this baby ?
Is it related to the kernel ?
Many thanks !
I know the 6P can record at 60fps due to the faster processor. And that's why it's not available with the 5x. Not sure if someone could hack or modify it to do 60fps at a lower resolution though.
Edit: But it can do 4k at 30 fps ([1920x1080] x 30=265,420,800), so you'd think the processor could handle 1080 at 60fps ([4096x2160] x 60=124,416,000).

Technically it's possible I think, even a G3 can do that.
The 808 snapdragon can do that but I don't know in what way the system or app should be modified.
The 6P has an official function within the stock camera app to do it ?
Subscribed, I'm interested.

I have never played with the 6p and was only recalling articles about its video. Seems it does not have the option for 60fps at 1080. But O read it can do 120fps at lower res? The sony camera itself can do 60fps 1080. Maybe it just needs software that will enable it.
Perhaps the default encryption makes it impossible to capture and process and write the files fast enough.
I bought ProShot soon after getting the 5x (yah $50 playstore credit). I emailed the developer and he stated they're planning on adding the ability to make 60fps 1080p. Apparently Android 6 finally added the ability to access the camera function for that? I didn't ask for any further details.

If we can recorder @ 720p/120fps and 4k/30fps, the cpu should be capable of handling 60fps in fullHD... I think is more a software thing than kernel one.
Anyway I'm intrested too, let's see...
I've installed "L Camera", today,only for testing.
But in the video section, the options for 60 fps videos are greyed out...
I know this app is for developing purpose, and it's weird to see these options not selectable.

I think the same think
I find it possible. Yeah, it may require a kernel hack, but it should definitely be possible. If enough interest is generated I will try to investigate.

That would be the holy grail for me and many others... That's the only thing that I feel bad about this phone

Yes definitely, Preferably without having to root?
ViRb3, you would be our saviour! That's basically the only thing I miss on N5X... +1 for researching this! I'll happily donate a coffee or beer while your look thru the code
Would love to have this also. Some times 30 fps doesnt cut it, neither does 720p.
I do need [email protected] Interested!

I bought ProShot soon after getting the 5x (yah $50 playstore credit). I emailed the developer and he stated they're planning on adding the ability to make 60fps 1080p. Apparently Android 6 finally added the ability to access the camera function for that? I didn't ask for any further details.

Awww yea, it's because of the main reason I bought this phone, camera2 api! I don't even know if the S7 is going to have camera2, the S6 was supposed to eventually but with the time Samsung takes to do otas they should get it in 2025. ProShot just released a huge update with 4k timelapse video recording.
And is there any solution?
@ViRb3 Yes please, that would be amazing
I am definitely interested in being able to shoot 60fps @ 1080p. I would gladly send a few bucks to the dev that gets this working.

Youtube quality max at 480p?

Hello!
So, whatever video I try to run via Youtube app, the maximum quality is always 480p. Is this a ROM/kernel/app issue or is our device limited by hardware?
480p is often good enough, but recently I've been looking into 360° videos and the resolution just doesn't cut it.
I've tried the modded .apk here on XDA and some alternatives, but none of them seem to allow watching of 360° videos.
Is there an easy fix (I've seen people mention editing of build.prop)? Or is there a decent alternative?

Yeah the problem is with the youtube app itself on boot it detects your phones resolution (in this case 560p by default) and rounds it down to nearest youtube res (in this case 480p). To get around this first make sure youtube is fully closed then install an app called screen shift off the playstore. Use the resolution you want (1080p 30 fps max) and then youtube should detect that when you open it and make that your limit

Oh Unrelated we both have the same phone history (xperia x8 --> xperia go --> gs4 mini) #sorelatable

It worked, thanks! But this really goes to show a layer of bad programming - I mean if the phone is capable, is there some valid reasoning behind limiting the resolution?
Ah, yes... the old X8 Can't say I miss it much now. Gotta hand it to it though - survived 5 years with no damage whatsoever save for the battery change. True survivor

yeah my X8 was perfectly fine just felt alot like a brick thought especially when I got my xperia go at only 10m thickness compared to the 15 on the x8 great first android phone thought.
Yeah the main reason is that many phone are "capable" of higher resolutions but that would be 1 a waste of battery and resources and 2 not all phones can smoothly do those resolutions. If they unlocked the resolutions to whatever the phone was capable rather than its actual resolution loads of people would be complaining about **** battery life and lag of hell. They just took the easy route and avoided that rather than testing each phone independently through a benchmark or such. Dunno why they round down the resolution it would make more sense to round up so the full screenspace is used but I guess its kind of samsungs fault for using such a wonky resolution on this phone

Eh, at least an option to test it would be nice, together with a warning that comes with it. But this trick does work - I've found that if you first stretch the resolution, then run the Youtube app, and put the default resolution back, Youtube still remembers it up to 1080p until you do a reboot. The videos look really great now but you do have a point with the battery :good:
Thanks for the help!

Yeah it only checks resolution on app boot up so as long as it stays in the background the resolution should stick. Yeah an option would be nice but effort. 720p and 1080p should look about the same apart from the Antialiasing factor so less jagged edges I guess?!
Download App Settings module from xposed installer
and do following setting to Youtube App
DPI : 180
Font Scale : 85
Screen DP 800x1280
it will allow 720p playback
this setting will do changes in Youtube app only
