Does the USB c port open new options for OTG+charging? - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Previously, OTG plus charging was limited by the mini USB pin spec. But USB c shouldn't have those limitations.

Good question and I don't have an answer. So I ordered https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HNYHQZM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I'll report back this weekend with results.

I've got one coming, but I'm too junior to post external links
On amazon:
Aukey
AUKEY USB C Hub, 4 USB 3.0 Ports + Type C Input Charging Port Aluminum Body for MacBook, Google Chromebook Pixel
I'll report back as well.

Got the hub. Heres my test scenarios:
1. Connect just the hub (no power). Phone recognizes the hub and sends power to the hub.
2. Connect device to hub from #1. Device is recognized by phone.
3. Connect power to hub from #2. No power to phone or device.
4. Connect power to hub (no devices). Then connect phone to hub. Phone charges from hub.
5. Connect device to hub. Connect power to hub. Device is not powered.
6. Connect hub #5 to phone. Device is recognized by phone and phone and device both receive power from hub.
Repro shows #6 works consistently. Success!!
NOTE: #6 only seems to work when I've got the hub plugged into my Anker 48W wall USB charger. Hasn't worked with two other USB chargers I've tried, including the Note 7's quick charger.

I did not find a 48W anker wall charger, only 40W and 60W. Can you post the exact name or the amazon link (remove "www." and post it as text)? Is it a usb-c PD charger?
I think that the aukey usb-c hub requires a charger with usb power delivery in order to work. The note 7 (exynos version at least, tested by a Chinese gizmo website) supports usb power delivery in addition to QC2.0 but the included Samsung charger is only QC2.0 and therefore incompatible with this hub.

MHL to HDMI adaptor cable

Hello all,
Today I was excited to find a cable that I'd ordered last week from Hong Kong on ebay had arrived.
Micro USB MHL to HDMI Cable Adapter HDTV For Samsung Galaxy S2
Well if it works on the S2 then it probably works on the Note. Well I plugged an HDMI cable into my Dell 1920 x 1200 monitor, that cable into the adapter and then a micro USB power cable into the micro USB power socket of the device.
Doesn't work
Hmm. Its a pretty simple device. Well I tried swapping micro USB cables in case it works differently with MHL or non MHL cables. Still does nothing. Damn.
Maybe it requires particular software to drive the video. Well no joy yet. If anyone has some suggestions then I'm happy to hear them. It was pretty cheap. But I wish it worked...
In case you were thinking of getting one of these. Here is the one that I bought.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140672291111?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1020wt_1141
Are you aware that it needs power? In your case, your device needs to be connected to computer usb (as it said in item description)

Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
my try as power source an other mirco usb cabel and use the AC - usb adapter
Cable can't too long.
Sent from Taiwan.
I have a similar one to that from China or somewhere and works great, do need to plug in your mains charger for it to work though. Only issue I had was you I needed to screen fit on my telly because it wasn't fitting properly but after I ran that it fit to te screenproperly.
Good news that MHL is working on the note, especially after the news of the Pioneer AppRadio 2.

I wasn't clear enough in what I wrote. I plugged in the micro USB power cable into the devices micro USB power socket just like in that picture, so yes I gave that a go but still didn't work
I bought a Menotek brand adapter off Amazon, and it works great for me. My TV luckily had a USB port (for firmware updates), and it powered the device just fine.
i bought one off ebay and according to the seller it is the original one
it works great
but you need to turn off the data (3g) because it causes disconnects on the lcd

[Q] 3-Pin Vehicle Dock from Google Play (GSM) don't charge anymore

Hi, I have a Galaxy Nexus (GSM) ordered from Google Play with all it's accessories (HDMI Desktop Dock and 3-Pin Vehicle Dock).
I've used the 3-Pin Vehicle Dock with my Nexus without any problems for 5 days but suddenly it stopped to charge my phone and doesn't work anymore, my phone can't even identify the dock.
I did a few tests:
Tested it with another car [not working]
Tested connecting the micro USB charger from the Vehicle Dock directly to the phone [not working]
Tested my HTC micro USB charger with the Vehicle Dock [not working]
(I know the output from the original charger is different, may this can be the reason)
Tested my HTC micro USB charger directly to the phone [working]
I noticed the fact that the micro USB connector from the Vehicle Dock only have 4 contacts, as can be seen in this picture: http://imm.io/D9C0

Is that correct? Anyone have a official Vehicle Dock bought from Google Play and can take a look on it?
If anyone have another suggestion it would be great too.
Many thanks!
It should work with the desktop charger I believe. I tested it like this before I put it in my car. Also for my car dock I never used the official charger as I didn't like the cable sticking out. Instead I used a standard micro usb to usb cable and ebay 1A usb car charger behind the dashboard so all the wires were hidden.
This suggests to me it should work for you with the normal charger.
What I would expect you to have is either situation 2 or 3 of your suggestions to work, otherwise both the charger and dock would appear to be broken which seems unlikely. Can you double check?

Well, I used a HTC micro USB charger with 2A output, not 1A as expected by the dock, and with the normal charger it's working, so there's nothing wrong with the dock itself, probably the charger is broken.

I think it's a good option since my dock is working and I didn't like all the wires too. Do you recommend any specific item from ebay?
Thank you for your help!

MHL cables with no micro-usb?

I'm looking to buy a MHL cable, so I've been browsing ebay.
I found this one which is nice because its length (4 meters, 13 ft) allows me to be on the couch while having full access to the phone.

The problem is, my TV doesn't has an USB port, and I don't see any micro-USB female port on that cable.
Am I buying a crippled/broken cable or am I missing something here?
I've seen other MHL cables (3 meters, 10 ft), which look like they have a female micro-USB port (for connecting either the power or the USB cable)... the problem is that they ship from Hong Kong... which takes a whole month to arrive!
1 for phone (micro-USB male), 1 for power/charging (USB Male) and 1 for HDMI port in TV.
I bought this cable and it works perfectly. So I have near TV laptop with USB
HDMI to RCA
Guys will this cable work?

does not work....

That's rigth, the MHL cable needs a power connection, in this case is using the USB connection to do that, the MHL Samsung Original cable needs to connect the AC Adapter or USB cable to works.
You has to have a PC near to connect maybe.
it is simple, really. mhl needs a connected charger.
the cable suggested in the OP seems to be layout to use a tv's usb port, so the power supply will be at the end which also has the hdmi port.
the regular mhl cables, like the samsung original one, are just an 8" cable with required power supply via micro usb (female) at the end of the phone. pro: it also comes with a female hdmi port, so you can vary the length of the cable to match your usage profile, while the other one is fairly hard to extend.
either way, you will need a power supply, either on the side of the phone, or near the tv.
PS: have you thought about using an AC usb power connector for the power supply of the cable in post #1. these are fairly common, cost no more than 1$, and i assume, there is a power outlet near your tv.

[Q] Do Mi Power Banks Supposed to Charge via AC or USB Mode?

1) Using the common cable (power + data), does Xiaomi power banks supposed to charge via AC or USB Mode?
2) Is the OEM cable in included in the packed supposed to be "power + data" or "data-only"?
3) Are the answers to questions 1 & 2 true also for the Mi 16000mAH Power Bank?
On my Mi 16000mAH, using the OEM cable, which is charge+data, it charges via "USB Mode" which is low-current. I tried the power bank of my collegue which is Pineng brand, it charges via "AC mode".
So is this suppose to be the case for a genuine one?
Thanks for any response!
i use both ac and usb charging for my 10400mah mi power bank so far no problems

Thanks for your response, but I think you misunderstood my question (and I didn't make it clear).
What I mean is, using the common charge+data cable (able to charge and data transfer), does the Xiaomi power bank charge the smartphone via AC mode or USB mode (you can see this on your android battery status/application during charging)? I'm actually talking about the smartphone charging by the bank, not the bank itself.
Can your bank included USB cable be use for data transfer? Also did you already confirm that your unit is genuine (please type Xiaomi fake on youtube and google, there are many pointers to almost definitively confirm it).
Thanks!

I see, thanks much for that. Now my follow up question is, can the OEM cable included be used for data transfer (is it a power+data cable)?
On my 16000mAH the cable included is power+data and the bank is charging phone only via USB mode! Though it also looks genuine from the various pointers on the web. So, in order for me to use it via AC mode (faster charging rate) I should purchase another cable that is charge-only, which suppose to force the phone to be charge via AC mode (by shorting data pins but this is is supposed to be done by the charger, whether wall adapter or power bank).
So I'm really wondering whether this is true for all 16000mAH (unfortunately yours is 104000mAH). I already tried to post it on Xiaomi official forum but no one is helping..
...also if you are charging from the bank, is there a way to pass data through at the same time, similar like we are doing hooked via computer?
Thanks
Use Ampere app to see charging rate

Please urgent assistance on charger issue

Hi everyone was wondering if someone could help me please with some knowledge on how chargers work. I don't have a charger for my pixel 2 so was in the process of finding one to buy but at the same time realised I have a charger for a lenova ThinkPad laptop USB - C. Could I use the same adaptor and save some money? I'm scared it might be to powerful! Or would it be okay?
It says 45w on it and output says 20v-2.25amp/15v-3a/9v-2a/5v-2a.
Would it be safe to use would someone know please? Thanks

The 45W Standard USB Type-C AC Adapter from Lenovo offers fast, efficient charging and AC power to select Lenovo USB Type-C enabled notebooks and tablets, including the ThinkPad 13 (2nd Gen), X1 Tablet (2nd Gen), X1 Yoga (2nd Gen), X1 Carbon (5th Gen), T470, T470s, and T570. When in use, integrated Smart Voltage technology automatically detects and delivers either 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 15V/3A, or 20V/2.25A to your host system. Lenovo's 45W USB Type-C adapter will serve as a spare or replacement AC adapter and is compact, allowing you to easily carry one in your bag while on-the-go. While the supported AC input voltage is 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz, the included power cord only supports North American power
I also found this which I think is a description of it

Yes any PD charger will be safe and work fine, but odd the Lenovo does not support 5V/3A or is that a typo on your part? Your Pixel will use 5V/3A & 9V/2A. It will not be able to take advantage of the higher ratings. Go ahead and plug it in and verify that is is charging rapidly.
