What's going to happen to the million returned Note 7's ?
Landfill or refurbish?
It would be a massive job to open up the phones and replace the battery, and probably not worthwhile for used phones.
But there will be thousands of phones in the distribution channels that have not be sold and are in factory condition. How can someone buying a new Note 7 in say a month's time be sure it hasn't been opened up, battery replaced and repackaged? I wouldn't want one for sure.
Just think - if the battery was still removable like the Note 4 the whole thing would be so much simpler. Send out new batteries, job done.

I'd think most of it would be in near mint condition. So a little bit of cleaning up and resold as new units or refurbished. They did just start this refurbished program very recently.

Seriously? Landfill? Do people think before posting? They are replacing the battery in the units. Then selling refurbished.

The same refurbished program that has them selling a refurb T-Mobile S6 edge for $499, while T-Mobile themselves are selling new ones for $499.
Good luck with that, lol.

Selling as refurbished would be fine. But selling as new would not. How would you tell the difference?

Note 8 sounds right for us, maybe not for them.
Fix battery problem, fix GG5 problem = the premium phone it is supposed to be.

I would think they'd examine their batteries to get a full picture of the problem for their own records. Probably they'll exchange the batteries and use them as refurbs after this.

Depends who sold your phone to you.
I expect Carphone Warehouse will require customers to take their faulty phones to the heart of Mordor and there cast them down in to the fires of Mount Doom, before they'll consider providing a replacement.
And even then it'll be four weeks late.

I would assume they would come up with a way to read the serial and maker of the battery pack without opening up the phone, then replace only the needed ones.

I'm thinking if they had lot control of the batteries and which phones they were installed in or thought they could be identified via any means they would have done so already and then issued a recall for affected units rather than a global recall. At a guess I would venture that trying to figure out if they could do exactly that accounts for the delay between the global recall and the time it was first determined that batteries were going boom. And yes, they will become refurbs. I hadn't thought of the fact that they could be sent out as replacement units...

most suppliers run their own refurb programs, so they will likely polish them up and sell them on as nearly new. (like when you buy a display model out of a shop)
as for the recalled units, chances are they will use them for parts or refurbish the phones and then use them for warranty claims and such also probably sell some on at a slight discount as certified refurbished phones.
there is just too much cost in the couple of million devices for them just to scrap them, probably way more than it will cost to debond the back replace the battery and rebond the back.

test and check all used recalled one then might just return back to original owner after fixing any issues such as a scratched glass
looking at other issues threads
there is a batch or bad battery
and another batch of a less bad battery since lots have reported lagging and reeboots
thoses will be replaced too
but total healthy units might just come back to you as the fixing process is taking place in each country locally
but yet each country has its trading law , so they work accordingly

Easily refurbished and make money off of them. Samsung hasn't had profits in a bit since the s7 s7edge and the note 7 was doing well, it's a hickup but they are doing the right thing. I read a story from 2009 where a teen girl in uk had a iPhone explode and glass in her eye, Apple said not our fault. Since then tons of cases Apple does nothing. They lawyer up and keep profits.

I will definitely look to get a replacement. But what about those of us that spent money on say a tempered glass screen protector? Cant just take it off and put it on a new phone. It's pretty much trash.

I am surprised the official release did not tell everyone to stop using the device immediately. Playing the odds with people's homes and lives is criminal negligence. Any delay by the carriers to notify customers is as well. Verizon playing dumb is risky. I have yet to be notified directly.

My phone toom a week to set it up how i want. I wonder if we will get the same phone with.current settings or are they going to send us an entirely new phone? Also if they do send us our current phones back, then what about our warrenties on water resistance if they open the phonr up? And yes what about our glass protectors and the full body coverage i have on mine?

I thought we all did, but now that you mention it i guess we dont actually have a warrenty. What i really meant was will it still be water resistant after we get it back? I remember reading somewhere in the s7 that after the screen ir battery is replaced even by samaung that its no longer water resistant or ubder warrenty or whatever.

I went to Verizon's website and the Note 7 is not available for sale, so they certainly know about it.

In short, yes. An anonymous Samsung rep. stated to a South Korean news agency that < .01% of phones are affected.
Since they are all being recalled, this tells me that they can't definitely trace the bad battery back to a batch, date code, etc. You have to pull them all if you can't, and that is what Samsung is doing.
The fact that they are moving so quickly on this issue tells me it's definitely safety related. I imagine the Samsung production lines are working overtime to make new devices, and that somewhere [Samsung quality, the Samsung battery maker, etc.], heads will roll over this one.

You can purchase, but the ship date has slipped to 9/30. Just yesterday, it was 9/7.
I'm beyond pissed guys (although I think we all are) I've had no problems with my VZW Note 7.... Great battery life and good performance and never gets too warm. Man what Android OEM doesn't have problems.... I've thought about LG devices but they have the bootloop problems!
I wonder if they'll let me choose a different color. I love the black, but that blue looks good too.

If you go to Samsung's website, you can file a repair thing for the spen. Just had to do it yesterday. The clicker part only halfway works so it gets stuck. All you got to do is print the label and send it in. I ordered one for $33 off of. Samusungs Amazon page, that I'll return once I get the new one. Figure it'll work in the meantime.

My guess as to how they will handle the actual recall is that Samsung, or the carrier that you bought your phone from will send you a new phone, and you send the old phone back in the box that the new phone came in (they will have the return shipping labels in the box). Of course you will get an email stating the exact procedures prior to them sending the new phones. This is the only way I can think of so that the user is not without a phone during the recall. Just my opinion!

Well i bought from Ebay seller, not sure how my return is handled

Note 7 recall

Engaget is reporting a world wide recall of the Note 7 because of exploding batteries.
Hopefully they will also deal with the Gorilla Glass 5 problem too.

It seems a full recall of all phones sold. Hopefully they also replace the Samsung screen protector I bought with the phone

Thank goodness I haven't gotten my unit yet!!! Long business trips do have their benefits.
One interesting takeaway from the CNN story's the quote from the President of Sammy's Mobile Communications about how much the recall's going to cost: "it is a big amount that is heartbreaking." Looks like they're going to have huge write-offs.
Maybe they'll have to bin all the batches they're recalling and the suspect ones in inventory. Then there's the issue of lost sales and some people not wanting to buy even later batches because -- well, because you never know. I mean -- Google Pixel Phone Plus (or whatever it's called) -- here I come!!!
The problem with these metal and glass devices is they can't just open these things, replace the batteries and re-ship them. Those glass backs will inevitably break during the process. The colored foil behind the glass is also going to have to be replaced. Then there's the waterproofing...
I wonder if it's simply a battery flaw or a design flaw that causes the device to overheat under certain circumstances. Global recalls like this don't just happen unless there's a very serious issue, regardless of what Sammy's lawyers wrote in their official release. I've been buying smartphones since the early days and this is the only time I can remember a recall of this scale happening.
While it's nice that Sammy was so quick to address it, it's a damn shame because the Note 7 was their best device yet.
The irony is that if Sammy had insisted on keeping their plastic designs -- the same designs we crucified them for -- or maintained removable batteries in metal-framed phones (hello Note 4!) -- this could've been addressed with in-store battery exchanges. Again, that's assuming it's not a design flaw.
And I have such a good device too. None of this user created lag or battery drain.... Sigh.

Interestingly me and a friend of mine have not had any of the issues mentioned here "yet" battery life is amazing and no boot loop. And we were also part of the pre-order batch.
I demand compensation for my Temperglass screen!!... everything else i could backup and transfer easily... i still have to fine tune a few other setting that dont let me "backup setting"
After this Samsung's recall statement will be known worldwide, IMHO the Note 7 reputation, confidence and appeal for the customers will be heavily affected....
Therefore I personally expect the announcement of the release of a new revised model, for example a Note "7s" with a Snapdragon 821 and 6 GB of RAM, very soon, just before Christmas time, to compete with new Apple's and Google's smartphones.

That's actually a great point. I love my phone, it's performing perfectly, but you don't just do a worldwide recall because a couple people used a bad charger. They were able to recreate it.
It is sad, this is undoubtedly the best phone Samsung has ever made and it's going to be a financial and PR disaster. On the other hand, those of us who stick with it will probably get a 2nd promotional item haha.
Really sucks but yeah hopefully they will give us something free for the inconvenience or some money for the screen protectors everyone has already purchased and put on the phone...
Feel bad for them though and all of the bad pr. This is an amazing phone and I love it. I guess they will be taking quality control much more seriously in the future (they should have originally since it is the most expensive phone ever).
The phone is still to be released in the UK, was due to be released today I think. The recall will probably delay that by quite some time.
Hopefully Samsung can narrow the problem down to a specific set of serial numbers. A global recall is very unusual, and does perhaps point to a design flaw rather than the batteries.

It was so dang hard to find my genuine samsung screen protectors, not to mention the cost. It came with two but used them both already since both my wife and I have the same phones. Right after I finalized my purchase from ebay (the only US seller I've found period), the guy jacked the price from $16.99 to $99 and then to a clown-shoes $299. The samsung SP is actually curved and, IMO, feels great. Hopefully I can get them to pony up a replacement set.

Have new and old Note 7, what to do with old one?

I purchased my Note 7 through an employee purchase plan with Verizon Wireless. I called out support line and they are shipping me a new Note 7 but not requiring me to mail in my old one. So I am going to have two Note 7s. I may just sell the new one I get because my old one is working perfectly fine. Would I be able to sell my old Note 7 anywhere if I wanted? Would I be able to continue using my old Note 7? Would it get software updates? Anyway to trick the device into thinking it is a new Note 7 by flashing the latest firmware or is there a hardware identifier that would block that? Anywhere I could exchange my old note 7 for a new note 7 even though I have already received a new one or does everywhere require a proof of purchase to process the exchange?

ring samsung. If you sell it on and it hurts someone it could open the way for civil action (I think you yanks call it litigation?)
buy a new battery when they are available and then replace it.... then you have 2 note 7... one less water proof

I was going to suggest replacing the battery with one of the eventual options on eBay or similar, but then I realised the firmware that limits/turns green, it might be using an IMEI check and in that case it wouldn't matter if you had a replacement battery installed..... I'd sell it 'as is' now and get as much back as possible. It's only going to decrease in value as replacements become more common place.
If you sell it knowing its an old model and it kills someone, you can go to jail for life.. I know its an exaggeration, but I'm just giving you an extreme example of what can happen.
Don't sell the phone, give it back to Samsung.
Sell it minus the battery or with the latest firmware limiting charge capacity.
I would question them on returning the old phone as the recall is meant to be an exchange they may come for it down the road.
as for how the phone works now an update went out today that makes the new phones mark up as safe with green batteries and the old phones have a lot of nagging pop ups and the charging restricted to 60% so soon the phone wont be working fully and anyone who bought it or used it would be notified o the fact it is a defective device.
I would hold off just a little on selling it, I am in the boat epp rep said to keep it but I read the OST and its because they don't have a formal word from Samsung on how to ship them back.
I would keep it and wait a reasonable time, after that, It would be good as spare parts source

I would not be surprised if they do this in all honesty, think of the money they would have saved if it was removable.
LG V20 is proof that you can make a phone stylish while still having a removable battery.
Waterproofing to me is a gimmick, I don't use phones in the tub or drop them in the toilet. It's pointless gimmick outside of those that might use it on boating trips and to take pictures under water.
As far as investing in a Samsung phone in the future why not? People don't get it when companies screw up like this they will work much harder to make sure this doesn't happen again. It's not like all of a sudden all future phones they make become improvised explosive devices.

Well, if there is no freebie involved, I won't be pre-ordering at full price anyway. I usually buy when there is some nice incentive to be had.
But the next Samsung Flagship will be the 5.0-5.5" range S8 (edge), probably with annoying SD 830. So I think I'll pass again.
I'm not pre-ordering anything anymore.
Also, Sammy was my preferred Android vendor. They've lost that status with me.
I'll consider future Samsung phones, but I will have pause due to this.

Samsung demosntrated with this crissis its an Stable and Commited corporation, sure they will learn from this sad experience enoug to not repeat this mistake, so I'll buy the next Samsung Flaship ASAP it is released. Mistakes likes this hardly will happen again to Samsung.

I'm too pissed off at this point to go back ...will give it a year of two.
I think I'm done with Samsung. How can they mess up twice on their flagship phone. They might not even know why the phones are catching fire. How can I trust them again that the next phone I buy from them won't have some defect?
The hassle in setting up a new phone is bad enough. But I'm sure most of us have bought cases and screen protectors already. I even ordered mine from Amazon and I paid a lot to ship it to the Philippines.

2-3 months depending on how the reviews are but no less than 2 months. Of course this is also dependant on whether I buy a new phone this year to replace the Note 7 because I can't afford to buy a phone every year since I like to travel and buy other gadgets and such, nor do I see a need to do so. I'm good every 2 years at minimum but 3 years even works fine. Currently debating the overpriced Pixel XL (lack of micro sd sucks but unlimited full size picture storage helps alleviate that a little bit and just buy the 128GB) or the LG V20 since it will be the first to work with Wind's upcoming LTE band-66. Decisions decisions.
When you consider the range of really premium top rated products Samsung has launched over the past few years, why people are turning their backs on them now because of this, astounds me! The Note 7 is still a beautiful phone. It had an issue that could have happened to any other device out there whoever manufactured it . Look at the S7 line it's also stellar. The Gear VR and their smartwatches. And the S8 rumours point to something very innovative and unique on the way next year. So why cut your nose off to spite your face? You can't deny they have made some damn good phones.
They tried to fix the problem with the Note 7 and they eventually stopped production to do what was right for most people. Give them some credit. Stop playing into the hands of the media and the Apple fanboys, intent on bringing Samsung down. They certainly deserve another go.
Yet, after all those years, they can't make a phone that doesn't overheat (or lag for that matter). The focus is on the battery now, but that wasn't the only fault with the N7. I'm still mighty pissed of there is no flat version and that we are getting ignored in Europe most of the time. There is no high-end Samsung with a flat screen larger than 5,1"...
I'd wait about a couple of months, but I tend to do that with everything I buy... early adopting is not for me.
Will buy next flagship Samsung ASAP.... hopefully it will come with a Stylus but nonetheless i will buy and for the time being i m buying J7 prime or A8

I voted for several weeks, but in reality it will totally depend on the situation. I cannot really answer with the options given.
I am not sure what I will do next, and I don't really want to go with an S if they're like the S7 or S7 Edge. My wife and I had both of those during the two week we waited for the Note 7 replacement and, well, for various reasons we didn't like them. If they come out with something like a Note, I may very well do a pre-order as soon as we're able to. But, again, it will totally depend on the situation. I may also wait some weeks or even months, or never even going back to Samsung if I find a phone that I like (so far, little chance for that, I'm going back to my Note 4 once I return my Note 7). I'm willing to take a look elsewhere, like the LG V20 or the Google Pixel XL, and if I like what I have with those, then Samsung wont see me back for some time.
I think for me, in reality, my decision will have little to do with what happened to the Note 7, but it's more like the total package. I fully realize this could've happened with any phone, just so happen to be this one. I don't mind going back to Samsung, but right now they don't have what I want, and when they do, I may not want to go back if I'm satisfied with something else.

When several Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones spontaneously exploded in August, the South Korean company went into overdrive. It urged hundreds of employees to quickly diagnose the problem.
None were able to get a phone to explode. Samsung’s engineers, on a tight deadline, initially concluded the defect was caused by faulty batteries from one of the company’s suppliers. General Google is sending REFURBISHED replacements

Have the Pixel 6 Pro here, noticed that when I open the camera sometimes it will just freeze up and reboot. Does this about 10 times a day. I tried reflashing the FULL OTA and Factory Images to no avail thinking it was software.
So after two hours last night of waiting to talk to customer service I tell them my issue and without hesitation she said "We will send you a new replacement phone." But it's gone be a minute and I said that's fine. I then ...and message her and go "Is it a refurbished phone a new one." She tells me they do not GIVE you a NEW phone even if it is DEFECTIVE they send you a REFURBISHED.
I told her absolutely NO thanks, in the kindest way possible, and asked if cancellation was an option, I explained I did NOT spend $1100 for a refurbished phone. Absolutely no way. She then goes on to tell me that she understands AND AGREES and that she will ask and get back to me in a few days if they can send me a NEW new one. I said if she has to jump through hoops it legit is olay to cancel it. I refuse to spend that much and have a frankenphone. You dig?
Buttt anywhooo, Just lettin y'all know...if your phone is bork, they gone sendja a refurb. You need to ASK for a new. Unless it's past the first 15 days or whatnot then you HAVE to get a refurb. But I can't live with that fact.
I would feel the same way. If using a credit card to buy a phone, some credit cards have rules which would give you options to get your money back as well, if it gets past the 15 days.
I'm really not surprised that they would do this, however. Just sucks every company would do the same thing.

I'm not mad? It's just kinda like really? I had two phones in the past that I bought new from Motorola and Oneplus that sent me brand new replacements. And my oneplus I owned for two MONTHS. I have had my 6 pro for 11 days I believe? It's just kinda like WOW. Haha my girlfriend and I were like no... we're not mad, but just cancel it.
Out of curiosity, for the sake of science, do you mind posting the logcat output capturing a few of these camera freeze up and reboot occurrences? Thanks
I'm surprised they would even have any refurbs at this time. When I did multiple replacements for my 2XL in a 2-3 month period from launch I was always sent a brand new retail package. Considering the supply issue and how popular the phone is. I would imagine they probably don't have many if any refurbs in stock to send out for warranty.
Or going by factory seconds where some did not make it out due to quality assurance checks, some phones are just born "frankenphones" at the factory itself.

Could have been as simple as already returned phones (for any reason, not even necessarily anything wrong with the phone) that the package was already opened / phone already removed from the packaging, etc, and needing minimal re-certification.
I still wouldn't want such a "refurb" so soon after buying the phone new, but there are lots of reasons why they might have phones they consider refurb in stock.

True, they do label those as "refurbs" as well. Would make sense they'd be mailing those out as they probably have little to no stock of brand new phones. I wouldn't care too much if I got someone's return as long as there's no cosmetic issues or mechanical issues on the device.
Exactly, I am not crying about the fact they're refurbs if I had the phone for like 6 months. But I have had this for 10 days. The phone ain't even a MONTH old. That's like a huge kick in the kahoonays for that much wallet spill...
The issue is the uncertainly on the degree of cosmetic/mechanical issues, making it a strict no from me at the retail price.
Ideal solution would be a $200 rebate on a certified refurb unit or a full refund for the inconvenience, stress, mental angst

I wouldn't accept anything but new within the first 30 days. In your case they definitely should be giving you a brand new one. You probably got a crappy rep, I would try again with another one. Easier said than done with how nonexistent support has been since launch. Within the first 14 days they're supposed to give new devices as a replacement. Good luck man!
Depending on how much I love the product, I usually try to rule out user error first because no product is bug-free or perfect, else simply I return it since it is clearly not worth my time trying to beta test their product and buy a more reputable and reliable product.
In the Android world, Samsung has excellent brand loyalty for this reason and something Google should learn from if they wish to retain their customer base and build brand loyalty.
I mean no disrespect at all to any fans of Samsung - I loved my Galaxy S3 a long time ago. But the way Samsung's software doesn't work well for my usage, and how they make some things not work as well as they do on Pixels made my wife and I return to Pixels and sell our Note 10+ after only a year and a half - and I usually keep a phone for 3 years or at least until it's no longer updated.
The Note 10+ hardware was top-notch. Couldn't stand the software, though, and my P6P is already working much better for my wife and I than the Note 10+ was.
Low inventory could result in sending refurbished one's...

I received my P6 Pro 2 days before launch, had a couple bugs, talked with a Customer Rep and got a replacement shipped on the 29.10 - the (replacement) phone arrived in new and pristine condition; phone was brand new, the packaging was new, nothing refurbished there. Mind though, that I was (ofc) still in return window.
Maybe what you say is true after a while when there are phones that have been refurbished, but as far as I can understand, not at launch. Also, as mentioned, return window might be a deciding factor.
Glad to see great customer service on Google's part. I also like that they're opening Pixel exclusive stores.
Could you elaborate on the two bugs that made it a deal breaker for you to hold on to your very first unit?

I had a couple minor quirks, but the dealbreakers for me were
a) random reboots (didn't bother me the first 1 1/2 days because they only happened in idle, but then the phone randomly rebooted whilst I used it to navigate, that was unacceptable)
b) heavy lens flicker, even with clean glass (random rays of light whenever in 70% of shot pictures against/ with the sun)
Since using the replacement device, I neither had random reboots nor any more heavy lens flicker. Its possible ofc that these were software and not hardware isses, but since I set up my P6 Pro replacement the same way that I set up the "original" p6 pro one (cable backup transfer from my previous phone), it's hard to find that out.

Totally understand. It reminds me of my new iphone 5. I got it through the carrier by signing up. I take it home only got the camera to not work. I go back to the shop and they tell me Apple handles repairs and replacements. I'm fuming. So I immediately take the train to go to the Apple store. They tell me no appointment? no help. So I have to go home and try the next day. I ask the guy handing me the replacement if it's a new phone. He says it is. But as I'm riding the train back home I realize that in the language I asked him I was a little ambiguous with my phrasing and to this day I still wonder if it was a new phone.
Anyhow, it cost me over 20 dollars and 4 hours of my time because I was given a lemon. Thanks for letting me vent about something that was 9 years ago...
