Nougat - Verizon Note 7 Questions & Answers

Do you think since Samsung is recalling the note 7 they will release the new note 7 with nougat? Instead of having to wait on carriers? If they do then what happens to root?

Carriers use their own customized firmware, so it's up to them to give the update.

I do understand that however the nexus phones came with the updated software from the developer

No.
If you're expecting Android N on the Verizon Note 7 before year end, then you're doing it wrong. Besides, Android N offers next to nothing for a non vanilla device.

Before launch, Samsung said Nougat would be coming for the Note 7 in 2-3 months. That will likely be Samsung's "stock" version. After that, carrier customization will occur. As Rippley05 said, I wouldn't expect it before the end of the year. Samsung and Verizon have surprised us a few times in recent years with quick updates, but it's not something you can count on.

In the U.S. it's up to carriers to deliver the update, but it's up to the OEM to provide the carrier with their custom update. None of the carriers actually rework Samsung's software themselves. Verizon will have to wait for Samsung to give them their version, then Verizon will start its lengthy testing process before it releases the update.

Not to mention strip out features so they can charge us for their own inferior version of it. ..or just adjust things for the hell of it like the whole settings menu. I loathe Verizon.

When will the multi-view update be available?

Has a date be announced? Why does t mobile have to lag behind on things like these, other carriers have it. Is there a way to get it currently without rooting? Also, is this 4.1.2 or 4
2? Which comes with photosphere? Sorry for all tue questions, just can't wait to show off to friends with iphones.

Were all excited, some may flame you for not searching but we all need to learn from somewhere right? Our updates always take a while. You have to think, first google releases firmware ie 4.1 then samsung has to mess with it and then the carrier. Since this is a samsung feature, were only waiting between samsung and tmobile. Of course nothing comes out flawless the first time ( just look at the issues nexus is having with 4.2 ) were currently on 4.1.1. Next will b 4.1.2 im hoping for the release. To be this week since verizon will have multiwindow out of the box. We shall see : )

Don't have so high expectations. I have had this feature a month or so now and have found that the only time I want to use it is when I'm using an incompatible application. I have researched rooting but it seems i then have to live without the s-pen, and tha's not going to happen.

I think you need to do some more research. Rooting will not make you lose s-pen capabilities. There are some sprint version roms with the multi Window hack that work just fine, the only ability you will lose is wifi calling

If you do it right you can get root w/ multi-window enabled, hacked for all apps, and wifi calling.
Need to install XquiziT v4, set up wifi calling. Then install XquiziT v6 without wiping. You'll have everything.
To other guy: only way you lose S-Pen is to get AOSP ROM which does not exist for 7105 variants (t-mobile, at&t, sprint, 7105, verizon) and even then some have S-pen tricks.
I tweeted tmobile help last night about the update and they had no official statement about that, so I wouldnt expect it for at least the next month. There's been a RUMOR (it's just a rumor, so dpnt take it as a fact like some have done around here) that tmobile probably wants to wait til LTE so they can do 1 update once and for all

That is not correct.
You don't lose your S pen features just because you rooted. The Buddy feature works only work with TouchWiz. But you can chose to be on TouchWiz while rooted. All other S pen features work with other Launchers rather rooted or not. Each ROM has its own limitations. So you have to look at each ROM for its limitations. But while rooted on Stock ROM you will have S pen features.
When we actually get Multi-window feature then we can use a hack from the Galaxy Note 2 forum to add most other apps to that feature. Hopefully with no issues. Which I don't see any issues coming of this hack.
Which version of Galaxy Note 2 do you have, that you have the Multi-window feature you say you have, and yet not be rooted? Are you on Sprint version? Are you using an International version?
If they waited till lte then were screwed lol. I dont expect lte till at least end of 13 considering how slow tmobile is. Well be the last ones to get it but yet the first ones to get the phone. Lame!

Nope. Powers to be say some areas will have lte by the second quarter of 2013. Some talks in the SF Bay area that some areas might start lte coming in the first quarter of 2013. Either way it is still way to long to wait for multi window feature update.

I dont know exactly when lte is coming I do know that tmobile combinded with Another carier I think metro pcs. So I would think that the areas that metro has lte would be the first areas to get tmobile lte. I could totaly be wrong I am only guessing here. As far as the update I would not expect them to wait to combine all three things. When the t989 got ICS we got a maitenance update a few weeks before so I dont think they will be worried about that. I am sure it will be available on kies soon hopfully not much m ore than a month then OTA soon after. The one thing is that this phone came with a widget to check for ota software updates that makes me think they planned on relesing a update soon but that could be wrong too.

If the 4.1.2.update is any indicator, my guess would be summer 2014.
These announcements are ALWAYS for the international version...it takes the US carriers months to put out their updates from there. International versions do not have as much restrictions as in the US and the carriers here reserve the right to control updates. And AT&T is notoriously last in those carriers.

The 4.3 release for the S3/S4/N2 is pretty tied up to the release of the Galaxy Gear "smart" watch.
Event though the Gear will probably not sell like hot cakes, I'm pretty sure carriers will want their share of the pie sooner than later. Because of this, I'll hold on to my pink glasses and expect the update to be made available by the holidays.
I would also expect Samsung to put some pressure on the carriers to do so...

Not sure, it kinda makes sense though.
im kinda excited about this Android 6. Korean buddies are the 1st lucky guys who already received M 6.0.1 for their S6 2 days ago.
M is reported to have better performance, none (or less) ram leaked, longer battery life and, one of the most importance for me, much faster finger scan response.
I doubt it, its usually 1 month after next iteration of the phone is released (S7)

How is it "confirmed" if some dumb/clueless rep guesstimated it's release date?? No, just no guy... SMH
Leaked documentation that has been covered at a number of sites (here is the first that I saw http://www.mobipicker.com/galaxy-s6-s6-edge-s6-edge-s5-note5-note-4-android-marshmallow-update/ ) shows that the release will be going out to carriers between February and April, so this isn't that unrealistic. And it has already rolled out in Korea.
The unknown part about this is how long Sprint will take to have this out via OTA. If they are already working on a build and are just waiting for a final update, this could be spot on.

I have never understood why it is considered bad form on XDA to rush a developer to get a new ROM out; but the very same people expect Sprint to rush out an update to millions of people across multiple countries.

The fundamental difference in your statement is that XDA devs do it on their own time for free. Carriers, not just Sprint, make millions off their customers. So they should be held to a much higher standard. However in my opinion, Sprint, compared to other carriers, has done a good job at keeping updated. I would say no worse than any other carrier. I mean look at the mm update on the Nexus 6. Every carrier got the ota update months before ATT finally put it out. And that was on a Nexus [emoji33]

Yes just the battery.
Now that the Feds are involved (CPSC), I will be shocked, and presently surprised, if they move this quickly. I dropped back to my developer edition of the Note 3 (custom ROM and custom kernel) to wait it out. Love the N7, even without an unlocked bootloader. My local corporate Verizon store has been very helpful. Not particularly worried about successfully trading in my N7 when the fixed ones are in stock, regardless of some "return date". Not sure if a local store manager, or someone higher up the food chain would want to be on the business end of a federal recall.

The lack of coordination with the CPSC is also affecting carriers' ability to help with the recall. The WSJ reports that while Samsung has sent an unknown number of Note 7 units to mobile operators, they aren't allowed to distribute them until they receive approval from the CPSC.

If what the Verge is reporting is accurate - that is good and bad. It would mean that most likely Verizon stores have new notes already - bad news is they have to wait on the CPSC to release them - which could take who knows how long.

Hopefully there will be some sort of exploit if we get it!
This phone hasn't worked any better than it did before I got a single update. All these patches and os upgrades have just slowed the phone down and added glitches.

Wi-Fi calling and enhanced messaging (or whatever it's called) were a pretty big step forward for the device.

If you were fortunate enough to not have your messaging broken by it. There is another thread in this forum that covers those of us who's messages don't go through with that turned on.
I still love the phone just wish I never updated it from the day I got it.

Has there been any confirmation that the Note 5 will actually get Nougat ? Just a tad cynical after the length of time it took for Marshmallow to drop.

Only beta in koria
Samsung phased a roll-out for the Marshmallow update, with some devices receiving it in South Korea at the end of January 2016. Other regions and devices had to wait a little longer with updates still being pushed in March 2016.
With so many devices to update, Samsung tends to be a little slower. At the moment, the company hasn't committed to a timeline, but it's thought that the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge will be updated to the Grace UX - as found on the Note 7.
It has been confirmed that the Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 will be the full Android 7.1.1 version.
Samsung has started a Galaxy Beta Programme for Nougat, meaning this in US, UK, Korea and China can test the software on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.
The T-Mobile network has confirmed some Samsung devices that will be updated at some point, including: Note 5, S6, S6 edge, S7 and S7 edge.
I would definitely prefer a downgrade from this 6.01 but if people report much improved battery life by heavy majority I may wait another year or so before upgrading.
I vote for a change in the title of this thread. Each time I see it I get a false sense of hope that AT&T actually released 7.1.1 overnight.
