[Q] G891AUCS1APH1 update from August 26 2016 - anyone else get this? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Active Questions & Answers

Just acquired a GS7A (G891A) yesterday and I've been playing around with it for a bit and so far so good. I noted that the firmware I've got on this device (installed by the previous owner since I didn't do it in my short time of owning this GS7A) is mentioned here at AT&T's support site:
https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1118410
Just wondering if anyone else is currently on this firmware and if they have any information about it in terms of performance compared to older versions of the firmware, battery life changes, anything else. It says it's just a small update on top of the previous one (PG7) and it's only about 61MB in size - it specifically says it was Android security updates and it was released on August 26th so again I'm just curious if anyone has anything positive or negative to comment on it.
I'm pretty sure I can't roll back to previous firmware because a) they simply don't seem to exist anywhere for download and potential flashing and b) while I haven't used a Samsung device in some time (been happy with various LG devices the past 18 months or so) I'm pretty sure they have some mechanism in place to prevent rollbacks to earlier firmware (which totally sucks but that's how companies do crap nowadays).
Anyway, just curious, if anyone cares to drop a comment that's fine, if not then this will be another single post thread like so many others.
Great device so far, I didn't realize at first it had the heartbeat/SpO2 reader under the LED flash, just figured it was some sensor for photographic work. My Wife is currently having some issues with her lungs/pulmonary system so when I asked her for a finger earlier she didn't understand why but as soon as she put it on the sensor and saw the red glow of the infrared LED she knew exactly what I was doing: checking her blood oxygen level (she's actually using oxygen at home for the time being). Yes I know infrared isn't in the visible spectrum but it glows red just the same so people know it's active - no pun intended - just like it does in the hospitals/care facilities with their sensors they tape to a fingertip.
Fast, got a 91K score on Antutu earlier which ain't bad considering it's just a quad core - I still have a Flex 2 but that Snapdragon 810 will overheat and throttle on that benchmark; the best I've ever managed was about 84K using all 8 cores so again, the Snapdragon 820 with just the 4 cores is pretty damned efficient most definitely.
Have fun, always...

I had my phone for only a week so it's hard to tell, because I upgraded to PH1 the next day. I didn't notice any difference in terms of performance.
By the way, just today I got a new update (G891AUCS2API2, Sept. 1st) that is still not listed in the AT&T website.

I just saw someone note that update from yesterday and I was asking them about the firmware version, so it's PI2. Curious to know what that's all about and yes I did some checking and haven't found any advisory posting yet. There was one for the Aug security patches released on Aug 25th so, considering the timing this is more than likely an update to the Sept security patches.
So it's the Sept 1 security patches, I take it, about the time they should have been released. I'm not sure I can even get an OTA at this point as I don't use AT&T and I don't even have cellular service at the moment with the Active, never had much luck getting the OTAs over Wi-Fi. Guess I'll wait a few days and then see what happens (I have the AT&T update package disabled).

I just bought my unlocked s7a to india. I am not getting any update. The update is shown of May 2016.
Any way to update?

No idea on manual updates, I've never found them anywhere I've looked. As stated in that post above, the September security patches are available but because I'm not an AT&T user I can't get it to grab the update and install it so, I guess I'll be stuck with the August update from now on.
If anybody gets the September update (PI2) and can save the update.zip file and share it that would be pretty awesome but, alas, the GS7A just isn't very popular unfortunately - most folks buy the S7 or S7 Edge even though I personally think the GS7A is a better device overall.
Can't stand pretty shiny slippery glossy crap anyway.

For anyone wishing to update from G891AUCS1APH1 to U2APK2
1.
Use stock recovery and adb sideload this to uodate to PI2 (46.5 MB)
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/BGy7/gKs4xzhRE/SS-G891AUCS1APH1-to-S2API2.zip
be patient, it takes time.
2.
After reboot, againt use stock recovery to update PI2 to PK2 (410 MB)
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/BGy7/gKs4xzhRE/SS-G891AUCS2API2-to-U2APK2.zip
Now you could follow this thread to root your device successfully reported by most on PK2

Is the HTC M9 dead or still being patched? Loads of vulnerabilities on latest version

Cheers everyone
I am a WWE HTC One M9 user from the very beginning, did some custom ROM fiddling until some months ago, but I stopped enjoying the weekly or even daily updating and went back to the latest MM ROM that was available.
By chance I started the Stagefright detector tool today as I was cleaning some apps and found out that there was a load of vulnerabilities the tool said my device was affected by (16! CRITICAL, 29 high, 3 moderate). I didn't feel too good about it and wondered if it may be related to the fact that I still had a developer version on my phone.
So I changed the MID and flashed the latest WWE RUU 3.35.401.12, basically back to full stock, hoping that whis will get me to the very latest version HTC released. Result: Same vulnerabilities found by the tool, and an Android Security Patch level of 2015-12-01 in the menu . Also, no updates available via the menu.
I am really wondering whether there will be any updates coming anymore - increasing the security of my device to an acceptable state again.
Right now, the phone feels broken to me, with no way to fix it at the moment. I am tempted to call my provider and have them take the phone back for this reason -> I believe that not only hardware can break a phone.
What do you guys think, are you planning to ditch the M9 in the near future or do you expect any updates to come to it?
Cheers
PS I was slightly disappointed with it from the beginning - primarily due to the disaster of a camera they built in. I do have the feeling that I need to find a reason to get rid of it, and this would definitely be one.
The biggest flaw with the Android ecosystem is that updates are dependent not just on Google, but also the manufacturer and the carrier. HTC is not one of the better manufacturers in ensuring timely updates.
There is a solid selection of ROMs that are using the latest version of Android, but they are in varying stages of development. Your mileage may vary.
In short, if you want regular updates flash a ROM or purchase a Nexus device.
If you want the latest security patches CM13 is your best bet. Or I installed the HTC 10 port and Stagefright Detector detected only 1 critical, 13 high, and 1 moderate issues.

What gets faster updates? Nexus or Motorola and that is it? Not sure how that makes HTC one of the worst. I had an m8 months ago and it was already on marshmallow when i got it. The lg g2 was abandoned at 4.4.2 here in Canada where the carrier's tend to be a little better at updates. That was definitely lg's decision there. Also the g3 was way slower to get an update than the m8. So I don't think you can say it's one of the worst. I'd say lg is.

Did anybody else get a new OTA for their tab last night?

Out of nowhere, I suddenly get this:
https://samsung-firmware.org/download/GALAXY Tab PRO/8be3/BTU/T900XXSBPL3/T900OXABOH4/
The Changes text is useless, literally just says "N" - but sure as hell isn't Nougat as it was only 80Mb. Just found it very odd since my 12.2 Pro is so old, I wasn't expecting any updates. And it's too old for the monthly security patch thing on newer devices.
Anyone know what it is about?
The 12.2" Pro isn't exactly like its younger siblings the 10.2, and 8.4. which only have 2Gbs of RAM to your 12's 3Gbs. As such you have managed to enjoy Lollipop, where as the rest of us have been left on KitKat. So it wouldn't surprise me that your getting updates. Besides Lollipop may be old, but it is still able to use the Security Updates, from Google. Assuming Samsung were still assed to pass those along.
Ah, I had no idea that the smaller ones didn't get lollipop. Let me assure you that updates to my tablet dried up a very long time ago!! That's why I was so surprised to receive this one out of the blue.
Wish they'd release another 12 inch tab
Yeah thing is IIRC.. Lollipop is the minimum level required to receive Google's monthly Security Fixes. Which is probably what was updated.
You could simply verify this by checking the Device Settings > About Device. Then scroll down till you spot it.
It might not be Marshmallow, but some of those Updates actually do fix things that needed fixing at the time. e.g Stage fright, or the Qualcomm Quadrooter Bugs.

How are updates for this phone?

1. Title says it. How are updates for this phone? Phone was released in Q4 2018. How many updates did you receive so far?
2. What is The current security patch?
3. Are there any noticeable bugs? Has the auto-brightness bug been fixed?
4. Which variant do you have? Global or Chinese?
5. Does Google Pay work?
1 - Updates are ok, usually they release an update/month i could say...
2 - I'm on security patch v. 195 and i won't update to 198 for now... battery issues has been reported regarding the 198 Update...
3 - I can tell you one of the bugs i notice... the square virtual button ( from all 3 on-screen buttons ) dissapear in some apps and i have to get back to Home Screen to have it again on-screen... Auto Brightness keep activating after every restart of the phone...
4 - I have 2 Mate 20 X Units, both of them AL-00, i choose AL-00 since several people have been saying they are much more stable compared to International Version...
5 - I don't use any of the Google Services, except PlayStore and Youtube... So for me, there is no point in buying International Version of any phone, since i don't use G Voice, G Pay, G Mail, Google Search, G Assistant etc...
Cheers

I have the L29. Updates for the global versions are still abysmal but better than they used to be. Every new EMUI release fixes a few bugs but brings a few more. It almost seems like the head EMUI team are a bunch of thirteen year olds with not a lot of common sense. A few bugs that I see:
-Notifications on the Always on Display are pretty much non existent (in 2019 that's just not acceptable)
-Set the DPI (Minimum Width) setting in developer options and it resets after every reboot (stupid)
-After a reboot auto brightness turns itself back on. This should be a simple fix right?
-The whole interface needs an update as it looks like the interface from Android Honeycomb, the pulldown toggles and interface are awful in 2019. Why not just have a stock like interface with the rounded toggles?
-After an update is approved it sometimes takes weeks to get it
-Notifications that you can normally turn off in settings for some reason on EMUI they don't work or the options were just removed
The actual hardware is second to none but the phone really needs an AOSP custom ROM or Lineage. Imagine if we could run something like Pure Nexus on the 20 X? I think then it would be the perfect phone but EMUI definitely holds it back. For me the hardware is so good that I can kind of live with these annoying bugs but if they aren't fixed in the next EMUI release then this will be probably be my last Huawei device. Then I still have to hope that another manufacturer has the balls to release a device with a large screen like the 20 X.

Mate 20 X holds a monopoly in terms of 7-inch screen flagship.
Wish there was at least an Android One device with this screen size. Or from a manufacturer who doesn't block custom ROMs.
Only next large phone to look forward to is the Mi Max 4 but that's a mid-range with sub-par screen...
A 7-inch Pixel would be bomb.

A 7 inch OnePlus device would be great too.
The international version lacks updates tbh, I'm stuck on 184 still
For me those small bugs doesn't matter.
I love this phone and i dont care small updates, works great for me really.
But still strange they cant fix some minor fail... But like it a lot... Still
1- 1 update since December (.184)
2- 1 January 2019
3- I get a 'ghost' vibration/notification from time to time, still haven't figured out what causes it (app or OS). No big deal.
4- European (C432)
5- Yes

With the bezels disappearing I honestly think the world is ready for a 7.3''-7.5'' screened phone.
They should have 2 versions, a 7'' MAX and a 7.5" MAX+.
This phone is the best I ever saw and had, but lack of updates for C636 is annoying

What is the C636?
Do they update it by according where you live or which version of phone you have? Like UK, Global, CH, HK and so on.
C636 is the international version, they update AL00 which is Chinese version and C636, regardless of your area.
I have the C432 (UK version, unlocked) running 9.0.0.172 (December 2018 Security Patches) and I've received no updates for the phone at all.
Checking for OTA updates and via HiSuite - both report back that the software is up to date.

Same for me in the UK too. Bought an EVR-L29 from Currys yesterday and was disappointed to find out that it didn't come with the M-Pen and flip case like a lot of other retailers in the UK do, and then it seems to be stuck on release .172 when I have been reading about .195 upgrades being available for quite some time.
I keep checking the software update and HiSuite in the hope that it will eventually trigger an update, but I am disappointed considering it was not a network branded phone.
Fingers crossed for an update soon.

I have ordered the phone from Clove UK so I assume I should also expect no updates. VERY disappointed to hear that and exactly the thing i was afraid about since my Mate 9 received only ONE update in 2 years (was Asia version i think as it is 636)

EVR L29 here. The only update I had was when I first booted up the phone when I bought it over 2 months ago, but had no updates since. I'm on 172. Huawei needs to up their game, the software is so buggy compared to the Samsung's I had previously.

I have two EVR L29 c636 phones. Both updated to 187 a few weeks ago and then one updated to 192 last week. Why only one got the most recent update is beyond me. When I plug them into my desktop computer HiSuite says they are both running the most recent firmware.

General Not a perfect phone, but exceptional for $500

I have had my ZTE Axon 30 for about 3 weeks I think, maybe more like 2. I like it a lot. The only two quirks I've noticed is that the screen is not as responsive as I would like (might be the screen protector as I put it on before even powering the phone on, since I cracked my last screen), and sometimes the Facebook app will be jerky until I close it and restart the app. Haven't seen that on any of my last 5+ phones. My last phone was a Moto Edge S (G100) which was a pretty good phone, but a little smaller than I like. The battery life is pretty good on this phone, I usually get through a day of usage, but it's around 15% or less if I wait until bed time to actually plug it in. I'm overall happy with this phone, though the quick settings options in the notifications dropdown has certain parts not customizable like I want them to be (wifi calling and mobile data are permanent, huge buttons, and I would much prefer other options like airplane mode or bluetooth). The performance is very good, maybe a little lower than the Edge S, but still not bad. It's a good phone and I'm happy with it.
Sidenote: if anyone knows about a bug causing Facebook to be laggy sometimes until restarted and you know how to fix it, please let me know?
Here is my experience so far after a week of use. I don't care about cameras on a phone. So no feedback from me there.
It's pretty big but it's not bad to hold since it's not wide, just tall.
Performance is fast enough for me. I can watch and scroll through 5.7k 360 videos on the Insta360 app without lag at all.
The screen is pretty pretty good. Would have liked it to have higher nits for outside use. But won't complain much since 99.9% of the phones on the market have punch holes and notches....
The fingerprint sensor is very accurate and fast. Finally got a phone where it is actually useable. My previous 2 phones' fingerprint sensors were trash.
Smart Lock Trusted Places! How I missed this feature on the Mi 9T which only supported Bluetooth unlock and only with Xiaomi Bluetooth devices...
Related to the previous point, I wish there was an option to remove the 'Swipe screen to unlock' when the phone is unlocked with Smart Lock. The Mi 9T has this option in the Developer options but didn't find it on this one. It's just an annoyance having to swipe.
Speaking of Bluetooth, no issues so far. Did file transfers and use Sennheiser MW2 to listen to music. No disconnections at all.
The Always On Display does not work for me at all. Nada. Not a big deal for me since I don't use it but it should be fixed.
As HopelesRomantc91 mentioned, not all of the notifications icons are customisable. Torch, Bluetooth, Data and Wifi are big buttons that cannot be removed. The rest can be added, removed and re-ordered
It comes preloaded with some bloatware but it can be easily removed using ADB.
Since nobody mentions this in a phone review, although it also depends on the carrier, I had no problems with calls and also use dual SIM.
I wish it had the feature of applying dark mode for all apps like MIUI. The next best thing this offers is Read Mode which you can turn globally or per app. I use the latter to turn Apps that don't have a dark theme into greyscale. Helps a bit.
The touch sensitivity on the edge of the screen seems to be a bit 'rough'. When using the keyboard and pressing on the letters/buttons at the edge, most of the the time there is a delay with registering the touch. This has probably to do with the screen-edge mistouch prevention. I changed it to 0 but it still occurs. Maybe this can be fixed in a firmware update. I don't have any issues with the phone registering unintended touches when holding it even at 0.
Regarding gestures & motions, they all seem to work pretty well. I mostly use double tap to wake.
For some reason, the Z-POP feature in the settings under Feature is also named Mi-Pop in the Notification icon. I don't find it that useful.
No headphone jack sucks but it comes with the adaptor. I just leave the earbuds attached to it since I only use them for the phone. So it's just a straight plug in for me.
Last but not least is the battery/optimisation. It's pretty pretty good! I judge the battery by screen off time. I charged it to 90%, went to bed and left the phone on. Just DnD on. No power saver. 8 hours later it was still 90%! After that, I only used the phone every now and then since I was busy working. Around 3 hours later, this thing was still at 90%. Compared to the Mi 9T, the Axon 30 doesn't seem to suffer from constant wakelocks so when the screen is off, it is majority of the time in deep sleep. Pretty optimised. I checked with BetterBatteryStats. I don't use 5G. Oh and the charging speed is fast! From 20% to 90% in ~27min.
Overall I am satisfied with the phone.
That's it for now. If I remember something else or encounter anything else of interest, will post it here.
Google Play store does not automatically update the apps and doesn't show the notifications. Both settings are on. So I have to remember once in a while to open the Play Store and install the pending updates manually. Not sure if this is specific to this device or if it's a Google Play store bug but I never had this problem on previous devices.
New update; 11.0.17_A2322G_EEA. Always on display is fixed. Automatic Play Store app updates and notifications still not working.
Hi guys...
I'm thinking of buying this phone. I was wondering, do you still get updates from time to time? Any word on some major ones, like Android 12?
Would you recomende it for about 375 EUR / 395 USD it costs at local retailer right now?

Last update was the one I posted in my last post so Security update is the one from December... I contacted ZTE support about a possible upgrade to Android 12 or at least more security updates. Their reply was that they don't have any information but that it might receive future updates because it is a newly launched phone.... Almost a year old.

Don't know, but interesting that EEA has higher nominal version number (11.0.17), but older Android patch level...
Still hoping for Android 12, read somewhere it can be expected till the end of August. Now, is it info for CN or Global version, I don't know.
Btw, I feel like they didn't sell many units of this one globaly, although they marketed it decently and it got attention because of the under display cam and stuff. Seems like even on tech forums nobody has this model...

A thing I'm curios about...
One of the things I was happy about when I bought the phone was a 65W charger. The brick is quite compact but heavy (as the 65W probably should be), cable is USB-C to USB-C. Perfect for a universal charger.
But when I tried to charge my Lenovo laptop with it, nothing happened. The laptop also came with 65W charger (of course, much bulkier and with a longer cable).
I was really hoping I could use the ZTE brick on the laptop, mainly because I used my previous phone charger (Poco X3) and it worked although that one could deliver just 33W.
Any ideo why this happens?

So when you plugin the ZTE charger in the laptop, it's not detected at all? Or is it detected, not discharging just not charging? Maybe it doesn't support any of the Output voltages/amps of the charger? Not really that knowledgeable in electricity. What output voltages/amps does it show on the Lenovo charger?
It's not detected at all.
Both of them show 20V - 3.25A - 65W.
For the 15V, 9V and 5V they have different A and W values.
Edit: just tried on my co-worker's laptop (also Lenovo, but different model), and it charges at full speed. His also came with a 65W charger originaly. So it seems to be some compitability issue, maybe USB-C port or something. Quite strange.
New update! I guess EEA version is not abandoned yet. 11.0.20 with June security update. Maybe we get Android 12 end of next year when Android 14 is out.
Good news. I'm still hoping for the end of August...
Now, playing with the settings, I saw a strangely named "tiny screen display" setting under "Display" options. I must admit, took me a few minutes to realize it's about UDC (under display camera) area.
How did you set yours (if you changed it at all)? I tweaked mine so it is hardly visible on white, but then again it is still quite noticable on other colors.
Haha never knew what that setting was and never tried it.
Yeah, I think I got it after the last update. Quite sure it wasn't there when I got the phone.
Here's how it looks...

Note 10+ out of the box

Advice & expertise needed,
Few questions & hope someone can advise, & help.
Ok, I have had a Note 10+ in the box for awhile & decided to use it, as I forgot about it, actually I thought I lost it during a move a year ago. It has no updates, no security updates & still running Android 11. I took a screenshot of current update info from software updates page in settings.
I noticed during past year updates were released to 12, & T-Mobile platform for note 10+ within last 4 months. Twas hoping I would get an ota update within last 7 weeks, as that is when I turned my device on. I'm more concerned about getting security updates then a UI 12 update. I'm on the T-Mobile platform, SM-N975U1. I took the sim card from my T-Mobile S9 Note & installed it into my UNLOCKED Note 10+ & is working on TMobile without any issues. Splash screen is still splashing the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ not T-Mobile platform if that helps with anything. When I try software updates I get the popup below in SS. Was hoping I would get an OTA update. Any ideas on how to get security updates, or Update to 12 with security? Or am I going to have to flash using SmartSwitch? Or should I just root, or too soon, as I read the note 10+ may be on the list for one or even maybe two more updates? If for sure no chance for updates I would most likely root, but what are your thoughts? I want a secure device, & I don't want to pay $1500 for a $600, then a $800, then a $1000, $1500000 for a inflatisanity device when This note 10+ running max memory, is immaculate, not a scratch & runs fantastic I'd would have been using it 1.5yrs ago if I wouldn't have lost it. Please give me (us) good news as it sleeps with me under my pillow
Thanks guys.. as I'm always grateful

Congratulations. The N10+ is Samsung flagship's at their zenith.
I run 2 N10+'s still loaded with 9 and 10 by choice. Updates/upgrades can and do break things. This one in my hand will be 3 yo in October. It looks and runs like new.
Current OS load is over 2 yo, security is not an issue. Anything from Pie or above is relatively secure if you don't do stupid things.
I recommend you stay on 11.
I see no great benefits to scoped storage and 12 is a mess. I prefer Android 9; more functionality with trusted 3rd party apps.

Your the 2nd person to tell me slowly backup then run from anything above 11. Ok, well I'll stay as is. I run SD maid pro to clean & keep storage out of a mess, & I don't download anything, & don't open emails if not on contact list. I also have note 9 & a Samsung S8 which has a 570 PPI 4k capabilities truly amazing device. I wish my 50" TV looked that clean..I'm so done with LG TVs btw, huge problem with their Chinese WiFi cards, same TV with 6 cards changed out.
Thanks for the advice.. very grateful..

Try this settings mod, blocks adware globally and some blacklisted sites...
I had a scripted malicious jpeg I downloaded about 2 years ago. It damaged files in the download folder but not folders or the files in them when I opened it.
Spotted it right away and deleted it. Some files were repairable and the rest I deleted. No real damage. However if that got into my database on the SD card it wouldn't have been pretty.

I have been using Adguard for ad blocking and tracking on android and also widnows for a long time. It even blocks ads on youtube. The software is very good, but remember that it is Russian soft. Hell can see what data and where it can send it.
