Is the HTC M9 dead or still being patched? Loads of vulnerabilities on latest version - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cheers everyone
I am a WWE HTC One M9 user from the very beginning, did some custom ROM fiddling until some months ago, but I stopped enjoying the weekly or even daily updating and went back to the latest MM ROM that was available.
By chance I started the Stagefright detector tool today as I was cleaning some apps and found out that there was a load of vulnerabilities the tool said my device was affected by (16! CRITICAL, 29 high, 3 moderate). I didn't feel too good about it and wondered if it may be related to the fact that I still had a developer version on my phone.
So I changed the MID and flashed the latest WWE RUU 3.35.401.12, basically back to full stock, hoping that whis will get me to the very latest version HTC released. Result: Same vulnerabilities found by the tool, and an Android Security Patch level of 2015-12-01 in the menu . Also, no updates available via the menu.
I am really wondering whether there will be any updates coming anymore - increasing the security of my device to an acceptable state again.
Right now, the phone feels broken to me, with no way to fix it at the moment. I am tempted to call my provider and have them take the phone back for this reason -> I believe that not only hardware can break a phone.
What do you guys think, are you planning to ditch the M9 in the near future or do you expect any updates to come to it?
Cheers
PS I was slightly disappointed with it from the beginning - primarily due to the disaster of a camera they built in. I do have the feeling that I need to find a reason to get rid of it, and this would definitely be one.

The biggest flaw with the Android ecosystem is that updates are dependent not just on Google, but also the manufacturer and the carrier. HTC is not one of the better manufacturers in ensuring timely updates.
There is a solid selection of ROMs that are using the latest version of Android, but they are in varying stages of development. Your mileage may vary.
In short, if you want regular updates flash a ROM or purchase a Nexus device.

If you want the latest security patches CM13 is your best bet. Or I installed the HTC 10 port and Stagefright Detector detected only 1 critical, 13 high, and 1 moderate issues.

What gets faster updates? Nexus or Motorola and that is it? Not sure how that makes HTC one of the worst. I had an m8 months ago and it was already on marshmallow when i got it. The lg g2 was abandoned at 4.4.2 here in Canada where the carrier's tend to be a little better at updates. That was definitely lg's decision there. Also the g3 was way slower to get an update than the m8. So I don't think you can say it's one of the worst. I'd say lg is.

Still worth buying?

I can finally sign a new contract and my old m7 is about to die (it doesn't really charge anymore). Point is I need a new phone now and I can't wait for the m9 (also will be too pricy) and my carrier doesn't offer Motorola or Nexus Devices. Crappy Samsung is out so the only alternative would be xperia z3 which is a couple of month older. I liked the m7 and I am a general fan of HTC but is it still a better choice then the Sony one?

I think most people here are happy with the phone. Is LG not an option? Not necessarily better but they also make a good phone.
Such a loaded question. I typically wouldn't advise buying a current flagship which will probably be replaced by a new flagship in the next few months (some rumors claim Q1, or even a launch next week). But given your current phone's condition, and budget limitations, I'd still say the M8 is still probably the best phone around.
When it comes down to brass tacks, if I broke my phone today and had to buy a new replacement phone immediately, it would likely be another M8.

Nahh i don't want any plastic phone. The choice really seems to be between m8 and z3.
I would just pick up a used M8 for the time being, and wait for M9 before signing another contract for hardware upgrade.

Agreed.
The M8 is still a great phone - one of the best (if not THE best) front facing speakers, prompt and solid updates thanks to their being a GPE version (Sense updates come relatively quick as well - they are one of the best with pushing updates) and fantastic build quality... Also the following/support on XDA for the M8 is fantastic. There are some great developers working with this device. If rooting and customizing your phone is up your ally, the M8 is one of the best out there.
Lollipop on the GPE edition is great, you won't get a fast stable lollipop release from any other phone unless it is a nexus and other GPE phones. Touchwiz and LG's skins just slow things down and can actually cause issues (Google "chromecast systemui crash" and you will see that stock unrooted samsung and LG phones tend to have issues casting media within certain apps due to the way they code their volume sliders. There is an Xposed patch to get around this. Still lame that is something that occurs with their stock devices when trying to use a Chromecast.) . If you have a regular Sense One m8, the GPE conversion is pretty damn easy if you want more a stock android feel along with quick updates.
VS Sony Xperia Z3 --> Sony has the better specs (more ram, better camera, water proof) BUT OS updates tend to be slower - Still no stock or stable Lollipop available for that device.
I ordered the M8 in gunmetal gray. I don't think I will regret it, this phone will still be up to date for long enough.

STILL STUCK AT JANUARY SECURITY PATCH AND V20D AFTER 5 MONTHS ???? disappointed.....

When do we get some updates with some fixes and security patches ??? I am tired of waiting and i am seriously disappointed .... LG is worst right now with their updates ... It seems updates roll out only in Turkey and we need explanation why ?
The battery life is WORSE and im thinking to buy Nexus device... LG.. you are loosing customers ...
If You are on H815 ,flash the brazilian kdz. Security Patch is 01.05.2016
I had terrible experiences with Android devices over the last months. Got an S6 edge+ only to find out that Samsung didn't want to send the updates to my country and decided to give the monthly updates only in 3-4 countries. TouchWiz was better than the older version but still heavy bloated and laggy in comparison to other devices. Then got 2 Nexus 6P only to find out how poorly they made them. Bad screens with heavy partially tints and low brightness overall. Rattling buttons, rattling cameras, poor audio quality in calls, poor audio quality through headphones with low volume output, and scratched oleophobic coating. Returned both and never went to Nexus again. Now Im on LG G4. It's one of the fastest phones I ever had. Feels even faster than the 6P in daily usage with many apps installed. But alas. The battery drains like hell and I saw no updates yet. Sometimes Doze is not working though I had this on the 6P too sometimes. Dunno what's causing it. There is no point on going to Nexus 6P atm. In few months the new Nexuses will come out maybe they will be better.
Same here, LG G4 stuck in January update, but my battery it's ok. 2 days on usual use ~4h of display on with 4G mobile data on from time to time. I just don't get it why all the non EU regions got all this security updates and updates, but for EU nothing, just silence! The Brazilian kdz, it's not a go, from what I read for some users of H815 the update crush the phone and the bridge application prompted to update to 20d version, witch is the current January update... so the last choice is to wait or go to a cooked room in witch case you lose the warranty! Over all I love the phone, the camera it's the best point in this point, but for the end of the year I wish to switch to something new, or the S7 or the next Nexus.
I agree with you guys. This is not serious at all LG... I was impressed when I saw on XDA that LG will be one of the first to release MM, at that time I did not even own this device. But it is not enough to release one build and completely forget about it for almost half a year, we all know new software is good but it requires at least 3 major updates to be properly optimized and polished. Just for example look at windows, every time they released a new version it required at least two 1 GB updates to make it super stable. So what I wanted to say that if you release a new software you have to maintain it otherwise it's not gonna work, look how many revision there are already for MM in AOSP, obviously many of them are related to Google phones but there's a lot of improvements for the OS as well.
P.S. What about L, did you get any updates or they didn't even release 5.1? Because G3 I think still has 5.0...
i know. i'm checking daily for the security patch ,or even 6.0.1 to get the new UX,but i guess all we have to do is wait . Worth the wait because the phone is a beast with or without the security update. i don't mind at all ,when it comes,it comes . Just enjoy your phone
Even my Note 4 has a newer security patch! smh

i'd rather wait for LG official's UX since i'm sure that we will get it soon.
Looks nice anyway .
I can only agree. Also still stuck on the January security update. Where are those promised monthly updates LG?! Getting really fed up with this.
I think the ux 5 update will get things a little better but not too much. LG G5 doesn't get tons of battery life
I downright lost my confidence on LG. They never updated my G4 while on Lollipop past the 5.1 version, even when every other respectable brand was already on 5.1.1 for a long time. I had to update using LGUP and I don't think we will see a 6.0.1 update. I'm afraid all we're gonna get is some promise to update to N somewhere in the future. Hopefully, I will have moved to Nexus by then.
just got a g4 i too am dissapointed in the lack of updates but if they change to the new lg skin i wont update need my appdraw without using a custom launcher
The only solution is custom rom guys ... I waited for 5 months and decided to install cyanogenmod 13 and guess what ... It is even smother and faster than that crap of Lg softvare .. Performance is very good and heat is no problem at all .. Good job cyanogenmod .. Lg i will never go back to stock

The problem is that our bootloader is locked, and we can't unlock it. We can't install custom rom. I hate LG

That would be great if all of LG G4 users were able to unlock the bootloader but, sadly, that's not the case. I'm also stuck with the last sec update from January and this shot hasn't gotten any major update since then, or at least an official bootloader unlock solution. This is going to be my last LG device from now on, I'll go for a developer friendly solution, maybe from Oneplus or other.

could you unlock the bootloader? how did you install the genesys theme?
Yeah, the real problem is that we can't unlock our G4's bootloaders. I have the h815p and the thing is bootloader-unlockable. I would've installed CyanogenMod a long time ago if I could.

Yes. I have H815 Open Euro and i unlocked the bootloader about a month ago. What model do you have?

Is one ever too old for a quality phone?

I hope not, because I just upgraded my 72 year old mother from a Nexus 5 to a OnePlus 3. Well, it's on the way.
I may not modify anything on the phone. However, I do have a question: Does OnePlus update their phones to the latest versions of Android often, regularly, or will she be lucky to see updates at all?
Thanks!

They are generally quite good regarding monthly security updates.
Regarding new android versions, it's not exactly the same. Oh, they will definitely update the OP3 to Android Nougat. Android O won't be out and you'll already have Nougat on your phone ! Amazing ! So fast !
Oneplus are certainly not the best regarding updates but they are probably not the worst.
Don't expect fast updates like Nexus.
Monthly updates are nice, if there're bugs , you may get 2-3 update per month. You surely get the Android N update, but with my experiences with OP1 and 2, you will have to wait 3-4 months after nexus, simply because you are running on a custom android- Oxygen( quite nice now) so they are worth waiting.
and remember you always have HUGE deverlop community here, OP forum &chinese forums( which you could have strange ROMs port ) , so dont afraid ,

The OP3 is a shift for them. I think they're potentially going to change the game up on their whole paradigm simply based on the success of this phone. The public and media seem to be pretty fond of the OP3 at present, and Oneplus will need to maintain that momentum and keep their client base happy. If they're smart, they'll push Android M no later than Q4 of this year.

Officially The end of htc m8 no nougat 7.0 update

The rumors are true – HTC has confirmed to TechRadar the One M8 will not receive Android 7 Nougat software. In a statement to TechRadar a spokesperson for HTC said, "The HTC One M8 is outside of the update window, so it is not currently slated to receive Nougat. It will continue to receive critical security fixes as necessary and some HTC apps will continue to receive updates direct from Google Play

Meh, we already knew marshmallow was the last official big update for m8 for a long time now.
It's not HTC's fault. It's Qualcomm. They don't release the Graphics Driver that supports Vulkan API for the 800/801 chipsets.
---------- Post added at 08:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:04 AM ----------
However. Android Nougat don't need Vulkan to function. You should see the unofficial ports of Nougat from the devs
it would still be nice to have it if for nothing else but the power savings (assuming it takes over the running of openGL written games).
Really wished Google would support devices for 3 years, 2 years is really short. The M8 GPE with the 801 is still very fast and smooth.

Its not up to Google, its up to the individual device manufacturer.
Sure, it would be nice if HTC supported the device longer. But HTC did good by this phone, 2 years is a decent run. Especially since it was largely a financial decision; and HTC is in dire straits financially.
In contrast, Samsung abandoned my Tab Pro 8.4 almost at birth (around the same time the M8 was released), since it didn't sell well enough (whatever that is). A couple minor bug fix patches, but it never even got a single major update; and never made it past KitKat that it deployed with.
"It will continue to receive critical security updates", says htc. What a joke. I'm still on the 12-2015 security patch.
Shame on you, HTC!

Yes, HTC hasn't done too hot releasing the monthly security patches, however, I was surprised we got Marshallow at all, so I'm not complaining too hard.
Some devices never get a single update at all. The M8 started life with Kit Kat and ended on Marshmallow, which is pretty rare for any non-Nexus Android device.

Yeah but remember that Lollipop was buggy and we didn't get another update fixing any of that for a whole year.
True, they owed us one after that Lollipop fiasco...
So sad to see M8 GPE now stuck at Marshmallow 6.0 with July 1, 2016 security patch, RIP.
Keeping this phone as long as I can!

[Q] G891AUCS1APH1 update from August 26 2016 - anyone else get this?

Just acquired a GS7A (G891A) yesterday and I've been playing around with it for a bit and so far so good. I noted that the firmware I've got on this device (installed by the previous owner since I didn't do it in my short time of owning this GS7A) is mentioned here at AT&T's support site:
https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1118410
Just wondering if anyone else is currently on this firmware and if they have any information about it in terms of performance compared to older versions of the firmware, battery life changes, anything else. It says it's just a small update on top of the previous one (PG7) and it's only about 61MB in size - it specifically says it was Android security updates and it was released on August 26th so again I'm just curious if anyone has anything positive or negative to comment on it.
I'm pretty sure I can't roll back to previous firmware because a) they simply don't seem to exist anywhere for download and potential flashing and b) while I haven't used a Samsung device in some time (been happy with various LG devices the past 18 months or so) I'm pretty sure they have some mechanism in place to prevent rollbacks to earlier firmware (which totally sucks but that's how companies do crap nowadays).
Anyway, just curious, if anyone cares to drop a comment that's fine, if not then this will be another single post thread like so many others.
Great device so far, I didn't realize at first it had the heartbeat/SpO2 reader under the LED flash, just figured it was some sensor for photographic work. My Wife is currently having some issues with her lungs/pulmonary system so when I asked her for a finger earlier she didn't understand why but as soon as she put it on the sensor and saw the red glow of the infrared LED she knew exactly what I was doing: checking her blood oxygen level (she's actually using oxygen at home for the time being). Yes I know infrared isn't in the visible spectrum but it glows red just the same so people know it's active - no pun intended - just like it does in the hospitals/care facilities with their sensors they tape to a fingertip.
Fast, got a 91K score on Antutu earlier which ain't bad considering it's just a quad core - I still have a Flex 2 but that Snapdragon 810 will overheat and throttle on that benchmark; the best I've ever managed was about 84K using all 8 cores so again, the Snapdragon 820 with just the 4 cores is pretty damned efficient most definitely.
Have fun, always...
I had my phone for only a week so it's hard to tell, because I upgraded to PH1 the next day. I didn't notice any difference in terms of performance.
By the way, just today I got a new update (G891AUCS2API2, Sept. 1st) that is still not listed in the AT&T website.
I just saw someone note that update from yesterday and I was asking them about the firmware version, so it's PI2. Curious to know what that's all about and yes I did some checking and haven't found any advisory posting yet. There was one for the Aug security patches released on Aug 25th so, considering the timing this is more than likely an update to the Sept security patches.
So it's the Sept 1 security patches, I take it, about the time they should have been released. I'm not sure I can even get an OTA at this point as I don't use AT&T and I don't even have cellular service at the moment with the Active, never had much luck getting the OTAs over Wi-Fi. Guess I'll wait a few days and then see what happens (I have the AT&T update package disabled).
I just bought my unlocked s7a to india. I am not getting any update. The update is shown of May 2016.
Any way to update?
No idea on manual updates, I've never found them anywhere I've looked. As stated in that post above, the September security patches are available but because I'm not an AT&T user I can't get it to grab the update and install it so, I guess I'll be stuck with the August update from now on.
If anybody gets the September update (PI2) and can save the update.zip file and share it that would be pretty awesome but, alas, the GS7A just isn't very popular unfortunately - most folks buy the S7 or S7 Edge even though I personally think the GS7A is a better device overall.
Can't stand pretty shiny slippery glossy crap anyway.
For anyone wishing to update from G891AUCS1APH1 to U2APK2
1.
Use stock recovery and adb sideload this to uodate to PI2 (46.5 MB)
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/BGy7/gKs4xzhRE/SS-G891AUCS1APH1-to-S2API2.zip
be patient, it takes time.
2.
After reboot, againt use stock recovery to update PI2 to PK2 (410 MB)
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/BGy7/gKs4xzhRE/SS-G891AUCS2API2-to-U2APK2.zip
Now you could follow this thread to root your device successfully reported by most on PK2
