Getting one tomorrow, bootloop? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
So basically I've ordered the G4 (actually not knowing about the issue) and I'm picking it up tomorrow. However, what serial numbers are an absolute no-go and , did LG release a new revision? I am aware that 505 is a no-go but what about 601, 607, 608? As far as I'm concerned 608 is the one to have as it does not fail. I am confused and is it possible to see the serial on the box?
It's a H815 - Black leather EU version. Now the place I'm buying it from has excellent service so warranty ( 2 years ) is not a problem, although I reaaalllyy don't want to go through the hassle again with my LG being sent back two times for the plastic cracking.
Price is 350 euros ( which is because of the amazing service which I value a lot at the place I'm buying it from.)
I was contemplating the Mate S but it's too slow and no android 7, LG nexus 5X has the same problems and for 50 euros more the LG is much better.
Please help

Well, I had a dual sim version and it went in bootloop 2 weeks back, after trying everything I had to return it to the vendor as it was still under one year warranty, now waiting for their answer, I have always used Samsung, S1, S2, S3, S5 and got G4 as primary phone in Jan16, such issue never happened with Samsung, I still have S2, S3 and S5 and they all run without any problem, I won't get any LG phone ever.

Can you please share the EAN-code and first three digits of the serial number?

The serial number is written on the sticker on the outside of the box. This will either start with 50X... or 60X...
If it's a 50X model, I would return it without opening the box at all because some of these companies (especially those on Amazon) just hold piles of old stock. Without opening the box, it's an easy return.
I'm using a 60X model and it's a great phone. That said; I have had the occasional flash of static on one side of the screen which was really worrisome at first. It's basically a split second glitch on the screen and is seemingly harmless and only occurs a few times per week. I'm happy to live with that and didn't bother returning the phone.

It may or may not boot loop. Judging from internet though there are very very few reports of 6xx S/N going boot loop. You also have to keep in mind that not all of those reports are real just like with the Samsung explode-gate. There are many ppl who like to report false alerts just because. I don't see too many reports of 6xx going bad. The vast majority of them were the 505's. I blame LG though for all of this. They tried to cover it up never acknowledged it publicly. They sent an email admitting the problem to one Android fan site can't remember which it was and that was all. Meanwhile it took them too long to identify the issue. I don't believe the latest S/N's have this problem. I don't see enough evidence to support this. LG should have come in public and say that they finally fixed it once and for all and say from which S/N and after it's safe. but they didn't. I assume they didn't want to deal with the extra costs of the PR nightmare, the recalls and angry customers and stores.

Alrighty, got myself a 607 version which is great. Black leather with gold buttons, in the beginning I was kinda hesitant because I was expecting the grey buttons but tbh the gold on black looks really classy. Amazing camera. Unfortunately the screen has a yellowish tint to it but I fixed it thanks to this wonderful app Screen balance ( I really was not expecting it to be this good, it basically eliminated the use of a modified kernel because unlike all other apps it runs as an accessibility service.) I will probably post about it.

My Peculiar Journey with GPro

Hi So i shall begin with my Experience with My Gpro in my short journey of 5 months
Buying
So on a fine December afternoon while searching for a phone to replace my Still going strong Optimus 2x before my 23rd Birthday on 21st Dec i saw The prices of G Pro Dropping to 26k INR with the GOSF sale going on in India.Too good to ignore when it was retailing for 30-38k range ,I Ordered the white one but Soon after that i realized i wanted the black one Called the Cromaretail.in guys but those lazy asses told me sir its not possible and all the blah blah , So I vented out all my frustration on them over here at Xda, where one guy who ordered the Black one from the same website on the same day read it , and apparantly he wanted the White one and CromaGuys turned him down too after ordering. FOOLS
Anyways through XDA we both decided we will not open our phones until the weekend where he was to come to bangalore from Mysore , he came we exchanged(apparantly on my birthday) and now i had My Black Optimus G pro in my hands.
Now after 5 Days , I rooted my Phone , it went fine till a couple of Days but one Night it stopped Receiving 2g Signals , i switched to WCDMA(3g) Now that was working Fine, i tried Flashing Basebands , I tried installing Different Roms be it stock be it custom, tried basically everything but nothing worked. My experience with my 2x gave me confidence that i would never have to take my phone to a service center for a Software issue but alas my Confidence was shattered as nothing worked.
Now as usual Service center people who mostly have no Idea about Technical problems, and they used the most basic solution that when something isnt working and you dont know why just replace the whole thing , so they replaced the whole MotherBoard and Obviously 2g came back, So within first 10 days my Motherboard was replaced :crying:
After MotherBoard Replace
4 months went by and April was going on and suddenly one day again 2g Gone , 3 G working Again i had to take it to Service center, There was some other guy , He said this time they will Send the phone to Their Technical Team as if It was suppossed to mean something , After 2-3 Days i got a call that Sir Yours is the First issue in the Country in G Pro where 2g isnt working and 3G is, usually it's the other way around  as if its an achievement
and After some days of Testing once again their Solution was to replace the whole PCB i.e Motherboard. So 4 months In and I now had my 3rd Motherboard.
Shattered
Now during all those 4 months i had a Hard case on my phone, but the day i got my phone back from Service center It looked So sexy that I didnt want to put that Cover back atleast on that Day Planning to Go to a Late Night Bike Trip with Friend i was shopping for First Aid Kit when THUD , my darling went face first on the Supermarket Floor. My friend, She looked at me a little freightened , but i was calm for my old pal Optimus 2x with gorilla Glass 1 had seen 10 times more bigger and brutal falls/assault for 2 years and never had a scratch on it while my Gpro had GG2 so obviously it wouldve survived this fall with No worries :fingers-crossed:
I picked up the Phone rotated it to look at its front and There , ....Heart attack .... Screen Smashed Gorilla Glass 2 You are worse then GG1 , how does a company manage to make the next iteration worse than the previous one :crying:
now they are asking me for about 8K to get the screen replaced , 1/3rd of the cost of my phone :crying::crying::crying::crying:
So this was my not so fine Journey with our G pro , but i dont know why i still cant Say bad things about Lg or this phone , I know they are not timely with thier updates, they probably gave me a defective handset, they dont create as much hype around their phones as sammy does but the fact is this phone is blazing fast, they give the same Features as a samsung with 5-10k less price and they are as reputed a brand as sammy if not in mobiles than in consumer Durables plus my 2x was a lovely phone
One hell of a story! Good to know you still think highly of the phone.. Guessed this phone is a Master stroke that even LG missed to recognize
Sent from my LG-E980 using XDA Premium HD app
yeah man for 30 K and with android 4.1.2 I havent seen a phone as blazingly fast as my Optimus G pro , I mean no Lag whatsoever and it's the colors on its display are so vivid , i just hoped that it's awareness and the subsequent developement was better , Coz for my older Optimus 2x there was and still is tremendous support from devs considering it's a Lg Phone
I also use a G pro Black E988. We have to understand that gorilla glass is not shock proof and that when glass gets bigger it gets heavier and will break easier.

I do get that but the fall wasnt that brutal , must have been 3-4 feet only , and my Optimus 2x has withstood falls from above 6feet and brutal ones that too consistently , if GG2 cant withstand a 3 feet fall then i dont think GG should be as hyped as it is .
That sucks. I'm surprised to hear you had any hardware issues but, then again, maybe radio(s) ate more reliable on some frequency bands then others. Regarding the gorilla glass, they really should call it something else because gorillas can take a beating, while gorilla glass is designed to survive your car keys.
I've been there though. I've had phones survive catastrophic falls, yet crack the screen from a short fall of my lap when getting out of the car. It's all in the angles, I guess.

A friend who is a technician told me to not buy an LG phone, they sucks, that i better buy the Xperia Z, but wow this optimus g pro looks amazing! that hardware for the price it cost its just amazing! i bought mine for 250 on ebay, like new! an amazing Quad core! 2 gb ram! that screen 441ppi! 1080p! just made me jizz the time i saw it! i have a bad luck with phones and wish this will be the exception. now im waiting a week to get the phone in my hand! but as i see this is a great phone with low price and great hardware, i dont really mind about the support because as a XDA user i dont rlly give a damn about oficial rom.
I am a big photos fan, had a S3 and it took nice pics, hope this one take better photos, can you say something about how great the pictures are with the g pro?
Pictures are good. This device is a great device spec wise for the buck......I like mine. I have the black e980 with a carbon fiber skinomi and glass screen protector....my setup looks sleek a sexy....I like naked devices....I climb billboards for a living and still keep my device in great shape! Its how responsible you are with it.
2SHAYNEZ
Too bad brother. If its just the screen which has cracked u can try to replace only the digitizer.. that will considerably reduce the cost as g pro's screen n glass are not fused.
Also the screen cracking is totally dependent in the point of impact.. even if it falls from a low height but falls flat with screen facing down then even GG3 glass shatters.

I would say in my opionion, dont buy it. My g2x was a piece of crap, and i regret giving LG another chance with the e980. My battery has gone bad (making the phone useless) and all LG support told me is to send it in for repair (how do you repair a battery?!?!?) and to include a receipt (somthing i dont have) but the phone should obviously be in warrenty as the date of manufacture is less then a year ago! This shipping would also would cost almost as much as buying a new battery and take twice as long. Horrible customer support(their phone lines were down as was their live chat and the customer support was completely unhelpful besides making sure that i knew that i couldnt get any resoulution without a receipt) , this phone will likely NEVER receive any android version updates(like the G2X never received ICS) and almost no developement seals this phones fate.

Hi , too bad to know that you are facing these problems , as far as battery is concerned any service center be it samsung, htc will ask you to send for repair ,If you dont want to send for repair Just try Factory reset and if battery still sucks then you are sure its not a suftware problem but a problem with battery so buy a new One. Simple!! :good:
And as for G2x , My optimus 2x got ICS and your G2x was American version of O2x, So i think it also got it and if not then problem is with the Carrier as Lg Updated O2x from 2.2 to 2.3 and then to 4.0 ICS.

Yours is not the only one in India to have this peculiar problem. One fine day couple of weeks back. My G PRO also stopped picking 2G signals. Takes up 3G in a jiffy but keeps searching for 2G. But If i keep it off for few days and then put a SIM it picks up 2G for a while and then again off. You rightly said that THESE TECHNICIANS of all Mobile companies dont really know repairing. They just know chaning MOTHER BOARD. Mine is out of warranty hence cannot afford MOTHER BOARD. dont know what to do whether to use it as a WIFI TABLET or a gaming device?

Three replacements and four phones in thirty days. . .

So the first phone was new and had crackling speakers. Second phone that was sent to me was refurbished and had a smudge underneath the screen so it wasn't cleanable unless I opened the hw. Third refurbished phone had a glass gap between the screen and the base of the phone, so there was bleeding light coming from the back of the phone. Now T-Mobile is sending me a fourth refurbished (most likely) phone.
All the replacements seen to be refurbished.
Imagine. . .I played for S-Off each time and a screen protector each time. That's around $140 ($25x4 + $10x4) USD just on replacement bs.
Anyone else having these issues?
I unrooted, restored stock ota, re locked, and re s-oned the first two devices (fourth device is coming 6/1/15) to restore original (warranty) status despite all these issues being hardware related. Keep in mind I'm no newb to phones.

If you are not new to the phone section, you would not pay for s-off everytime before you check the phone for defects or whatever. So you could save a lot of money,
if you check your device with Pixel test and eyes before you set it s-off
Other then that, i do not have any problems with the phone. Its a huge improvment from m7 build quality to m9.

I already checked for defects. However it was only noticeable during the night. As for the smudge, it can be taken off with a microfiber, however once the oil of the skin touches the screen it comes back. All of these were freak incidents.
Pixel test has nothing to do with my problems with the phones as I have no dead pixels.
Like I said, definitely very aware of my phone and its uses. I've had every phone out there and do numbers of different ports for audio. So its not like this is my first rodeo.

T-Mobile is very generous as they credited me $60 at no hassle or haggling. They've sent me several replacements with no hassle. However they said if the third replacement they send me is defected, they'll allow me to choose a swap of the M9 for another phone. . .which is not what I want because I like this phone.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues getting a unit without defect. I ordered my developer edition phone a few days after it was available and it showed up in perfect condition. I had read about issues regarding gaps at the screen and body, and a "clicky" area at one of the screen boundaries, however my phone was free of all of those. My old M7 had one pixel that would only display in white, but I kept it and was very happy with it.
Bottom line - I hope you get an M9 that you are happy with, because this phone is awesome. As hamdir notes in the sticky thread at the top, the upcoming firmware update brings great improvements to daytime camera performance and battery performance. HTC continues to show themselves as a company dedicated to delivering a great experience for their customers.

That's all good and stuff. . but it's the hardware that is failing this device. All these defects. Don't get me wrong, I love my phone. However this is not okay for me and shouldn't be acceptable for anyone else.
I just want my phone to work as intended.

You appear to be the exception and not the rule with regard to defective M9s. If you hold out for an M9 that meets your standards, I think you'll be very pleased with the device. Good luck!
I ended up with 3 of them at one point. Got to choose between two grey and one gold silver. One of the greys had phucked up speakers. Kept it for a few weeks prior to paying for S off... What kind of momo would pay 25 USD the second they receive the phone. Ended up paying $450 cdn for one after all the credits they gave me for the hassle.

I wish I'd sent mine back. Horrid battery and camera experience with this one
If it makes you feel better, I went through 3 Galaxy S6s with defects before I went to the M9. Yeah, I'm not happy with this onr, but it's more the camera and the heat that's ruining my experience. I'm just not sure why the hell you paid for S-Off 4 times. After the first, I would have waited to make sure the phone was FLAWLESS.

Trust me. I did. Until I looked at the phone when it was dark. For now on I'm going to be running tests every time I get a phone.
Is the replacement with T-Mobile or asurion? Or another private insurance..I remember with my wifes note4 they gave us a new phone right there in the store..and it was past the 15 days return policy...but then again it was Verizon not T-Mobile

They do it from asurion for some reason?
Hello boys and girls.
Would you be so kind to explain me how to understand if my htc one m9 is refurbished? Tried ##778# code and it does not work for me. And my phone is not rooted also.
Thank You in advance.
Best Regards,
So the third replacement they sent me (fourth phone) was also defected. So I finally called @HTC and explained to them what happened. They're sending me a new device, not some cleaned up BS used device. The one they will send me is going to be brand new. Good guys HTC (warranty).

Is it still worth getting the G4?

I'm looking for a mobile device with a good camera and CM support, is it still worth getting the G4? what are other options there that support CM and custom roms? thanks
CM support as in cyanogenmod? Unless if you're getting the very specific model that can be unlocked, I'd say look else where.
I know the Nexus 6P would be a nice choice for both CM and a decent camera. Not sure if the S6 has an unlocked bootloader, if it does, then that's a great choice as well since their camera is just about as good as the G4.
I'd get a G3. G4 has too many issues.

nah, that's totally wrong . If you get a phone with S/N 500+ then expect to have some issues, but if you get a phone with S/N 600+ don't expect to have issues because phones with 600+ are made in 2016.
How do you know that's wrong? There have been a few G4's in the 600's that bootlooped, as reported on here and other boards. Even fixed G4's are re-looping.
Fact is, the early G4's have been bootlooping recently and we can't say that any newer ones won't until some time passes. It's a time bomb situation. It's not a chance I'm willing to take on a $400 plus device.
Thanks to all for responses
No. Too many devices are bootlooping. Mine was bricked from it last week. Save your money and buy a Nexus 6p

Good camera and CM don't mix. Pick one. Any time you add CM you lose the stock camera.
The nexus will work but they are only a decent camera (lacks OIS) so not as good as the stock G4 camera.
is it worth getting a G4 ? heh of course. What else can compete with it now at the going price.
Never selling mine. It will be with me until it dies
Look for serials 510 and over and you will be ok. Try to get with warranty.
Thanks, I have the option to get a serial starting with 6 but I've heard that even these are having the bootloop problem, not sure though it is as frequent as the old ones.
No, just get another brand, lg sucks.

I'm on a 510 series with zero issues but the battery life is crap but they do have tons of bigger batteries out there like the 6000 mah one from mpj

I do also have the 510 and everything is perfect, not a single issue.
I wouldn't get a phone that has been widely reported as probably dying at any possible time.

Not really. Mine is with 601 S/N and i have the screen flickering problem..
How many devices have gotten the bootloop problem? What would a rough estimate be, any idea's ?
Jesus, what a load of rubbish from some users! The G4 was one of the best devices of 2015, as chosen by every single reviewer out there! Maybe not No1, but definitly among the top. I have owned 3 G4 units at different stages, and am using one right now, and have had 0 issues. It is a perfect phone in every way especially with the low price tag. Sure, I would take a Galaxy Note 5 or S7 Edge over the G4 , but considering im paying about 1/2 of the price (at least in my country, New Zealand), im pretty happy! Flagship specs and performance with half the price.
I will be upgrading to the HTC 10 once it is available, but the G4 has absolutely served me well, and highly recommended to anyone.
All the reviewers praised it before the bootloop hit, six to eight months after release.
Upon release it had some moderate touch screen issues, but was otherwise a good phone. No one is disputing that. The problem is the bootlooping and how LG is/has handled it. It's not a small issue. There are users everywhere that have been hit by it, and LG has done nothing but offer repairs to some, while others have to fight for it, despite the issue being completely LG's fault.
In all honesty, the G4 isn't a big upgrade at all over the G3. If I was intent of getting an LG, I'd go for the G3. Almost the exact same phone with no fear of bootloop and a lower cost.

That's true, you can't deny the hardware issues that happens to some, even though it didn't happen to me. But come on now, the G3 ovee the G4? The ui was just too laggy on the G3, not to mention that horrible over sharpening of the screen. I would still happily pick the G4, CONSIDERING the price difference between the G4 and other flagships. If money was no issue then definitly I would go for other devices. But the value for money is just too good to pass on.
Anyway, I will be back to my beloved HTC once the htc 10 hits the market. Looks like a solid comeback from htc. You might disagree but I will cherish my time with the G4 [emoji4]

Nothing but offer repairs ? what pray tell is LG to do.
Those that bought with warranty are covered for as long as the term is.
Those that bought without warranty were taking on a risk. This is true with anything. But then people are so passionate in this forum about phones that nobody thinks twice. And they will do it again in a heartbeat

Camera on the G4 is a generation jump. The same module was used in the G2, G3 and G flex 1 & 2. They changed it with the G4 and what a difference it makes.

Puts things into perspective doesn't it.

Is the bootloop issue active to sway a new customer elsewhere

The G4's price at some spots like Amazon is amazing to pass up. I have done my research on various phones and stay active on everything. With to many phones and variants in existence I can't be an expert on all. I'm still seeing the bootloop issue in forums but LG addressed this like 6 months ago. Are new in box versions of the G4 fixed? Or will these be phones that set in a warehouse for a year and will have the problem. I'm a android enthusiast tweaker. So my next phone has to be a contender with development. The 2 most important things. I recently bought a OnePlus 2 but after a ridiculous amount of negativity regarding hardware/software issues and overall negative real world reviews I sent it back before the 30 days were up. Most of which was recent times sadly. While some people might have a great version OP2 with good luck way to many people were sitting with a $300 brick in another country waiting forever. Sorry to ramble but I've been searching for 2 months now for a great midrange device that can be bought at $300 or less and have development but not have a guaranteed broken feature.

its unknown if they really fixed problem... they said they did but still people is reporting bootloop issues with newer phones as well.. the amount of people reporting is low... but they say it takes 8-9 months to show up so we need time for this phones to reach that time and see if they all start bootlooping likes the 505's.
be aware that not all g4 can be bootloader unlocked..

First of all G4 isnt a faster or a better all performer...if u want performance n quality go for LG V10 and for bootloop its for real most phones are refurbished meaning they were bought last year were only used for a week or more just like urs and then were sold so after a couple a months they were shipped to other countries and were sold off.... these G4s werent at all used hence many didnt pass the bootlloop time period for it to get bricked but many will eventually...This bootloop issue is so real i had to buy a used G3 for 130US$ i use my G4 as a second phone my phone hasnt been bootlooped as of yet but it will certainly so i might just turn it off let it sleep

Appreciate the fast responses guys. I didn't know the bootloop was a time developing type issue. Good to know.
"Jinderation" The V10 is a great looking phone but that is a pure flagship device in my eyes as I can't get one cheaper than $500. At that price I have plenty of options. The G4 H810 I can obtain new for $278-$285 so its a big difference vs the V10. My cutoff is $299 before taxes. Since the bootloop is a real issue I guess I'm gonna have to pass. Seeing as you never know if you got that repackaged type used looks new phone. I love everything about this phone especially at that price with the options.
I don't know why but I first came into the mod world in 2008 with the IPhone. Around 2013 to date I've been in the Android world. Development on hardware and software seems to be rushed on everything now a days and something has "that issue" Owning a IPhone I new if there was a real bug a update was gonna come out fast and even the 2011 4S has up to date IOS 5 years later. These android developers need to stop developing 35 versions of a phone every year and make 3 or 4 and the variants and produce them right. Again thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'm back on my search list for that phone.
S5 or carrier model S6 is on ur budget also ..S6 doesnt have any mc slot i also had one sold and bought G4..you can also try buying a repaired G4 directly from LG which already had motherboard replaced the pro is ur device wont get bricked ever or u could check ebay for certain model which were produced in 2015..they also havent reported for bootloop issue... My advice go for Galaxy S5 F model or G3 t mobile lots of mods and custom rom is availabe and also these devices have bootloader unlock and then wait alteast an year for S7 OR its edge version to have its priced down then buy that
Also this is my topic im sharing with u...see the consumer review on 1st page that i have mentioned and yes bootloop is a very serious issue

Worth buying a G4?

Hey guys,
Is it worth buying the LG G4? How is the Custom ROM support for it?
How much is a good price for it too, used? In GBP.
Thanks
I will never buy an lg smartphone ever,i have problems with bad call quality (low volume),lags, overheating, red colored retention on display on places where he was white color (signal icons) and finally my H815 died by irreversible bootloop bug.For me affter such a bad experience with phone and LG customer service ,I would never buy their product even if offer it for free.LG must change logo from LG to LS - life sucks ,even if one man does not buy LG product after this post I will be happy

Oh yes and stay away from Samsung and from HTC and from apple and...
To be honest! ALL the above can happen in different kind of manner with ALL vendors. Really do not think that buying a phone from other vendor will protect you.
Every model from every vendor has its own problems.
Buy a note 7 and your house may burn. Buy a iPhone and the screen may break. And so on.
When it comes to this device by LG the main problem is the boot loop issue which you can find in 100 threads here and elsewhere. I really like this device but as with all devices you should prepare yourself what you want:
Do you wanna install custom roms? Do you need root? Then you need a g4 model which can be unlocked (which I personally highly recommend). Not every model is possible to be unlocked.
The other one is the serial. The first 3 digits should be 60x the higher the better. The last one is: ensure you have warranty.
I really like this device but I have the h815 unlocked and twrp which ensures having a backup if all goes bad.

You know how much I respect you mate, but this device is affected by too much potential problems. No bootloop?
OK, screen ghost. No screen ghost and bootloop? Ok so talk about poor battery life, delay with updates, overheating ecc ecc..
And about development.. We have cyano. One custom kernel that will be no more developed (llama) and a couple of ROM based on cyano with cyano bugs inside and that make you lose stock camera and all his killer features.
I understand your point of view, but I will never ever say to a friend of mine "going to buy a G4, well done!". This is my opinion, stay away from LG expecially from G4.
Personally I passed to 6P.
Hope to see you again in other devices community!
TBH onest? No. The risk of getting bootloop or any other issue is quite too high, and customer experience I had is the worst one I've ever had.
IF it had no hardware issues that would've been the best phone to buy right now bot specs and price wise.
I'm Italian, here we have H815 international version with unlockable bootloader. Mine is serial 60x. No more bootloops, anyway no more serial one. My G4 is a fabulous phone, except for not great battery life. But it has quick charge.
So far for about 300 euro I don't se a better phone than G4 now.
With G3 I had a problem with the touch screen, sent to LG in warranty and they change all the screen and even the plastic front cover. So I had also a good experience with official assistance.
