Gorilla Glass? - Xiaomi Mi 5s Questions & Answers

Couldn't find any clear reference to it: does the Mi 5s have Corning glass (like Mi 5), or not?
thanks

It seems has Corning glass but I am not sure.
I used Honour 8 now I am using mi 5s. It seems that their screen touch feel almost the same.

Yes, gorilla glass 4 confirmed:good:

confirmed... where?
gsmarena reviewed the device recently and they say: "Unfortunately, Xiaomi didn't mention any specific glass protection for the screen and we can confirm the Gorilla Glass 4 is gone for good. The Mi 5s acquired lots of big scratches on top of its display just in the week we had it for a review. We suggest that you apply a screen protector on it as soon as you take the phone out of its box."

If you look at the review of Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, and Mi Mix. All of them use the same paragraph. It's like a copy paste job. So I'm wondering if they really do a proper tests on these phones.
Also on JerryRigEverything channel, he did a drop test Mi Mix (who ALSO mentioned no screen protection whatsoever in GSMarena spec) from sitting position, the crack on display was horrible.
I was wondering if Mi 5s would also fail with the same test. In that case, would a case/ screen protector save it?

it seems that the ceramic is harder than glass and because of that the glass breaks.

Following is a link to a durability test done on a Mi5, I'm assuming that this also valid for the Mi5s

No it is not, because the Mi 5 uses a completly different Case and also different Glass.
Thats why people ask here because it is nowhere mentioned what glass it exactly is.
Got the Phone for my GF but seems like a sratches pretty fast. but I already have some on my S7E, so no difference.

Hi,
From several posts on the Xiaomi forum, it turns out that the mi5s Plus DOES NOT HAVE GORILLA GLASS but uses a in-house glass hardening from Xiaomi.
I now have the device since 3 weeks and use it as my daily drive.
I doesn't have tempered glass to protect it.
I do not take more than basic precautions (I don't put the phone in my pocket where I have my keys).
After 3 weeks : not a single scratch, even the tiniest one.
Regards.

No Gorilla Glass?!

Really?! Still may get this phone but for the price....
I would expect Gorilla glass on it
How do others feel about this?
Watched a torture test (CNET?) where they froze, baked, dropped in fish tank and dropped from lap getting out of SUV... all past except the drop. It landed on the face and fractured.
Obviously not gorilla glass and a bit of a disappointment. Guess I'll need some form of case protection for this already large phone which I've pre-ordered.
Did you post this in every forum?? Yes, it has Gorilla glass. Even diamonds will scratch if you use something as hard or harder.

Lol, I just watched the same vid. Yes CNET.
So, just looked up the specs and it says gorilla glass 2. Now I'm confused
For those that will come back and say it's not scratch proof...I know I know.
But I'd expect a little less of a break if I were to drop it.
Where are you getting this info? The Note 2 has Gorilla Glass 2.

Did you see the driveway she dropped it on? Big pointed rocks hardened in concrete, it likely landed directly on the screen at one one of those pointed rocks. No,phone anywhere with gorilla glass or not will withstand that. Every time you drop a phone you run a chance of shattering the screen depending how it lands. Any phone.

Go to Corning's site. Note 2 nowhere to be found. I have seen spec sheets on some tech sites that say it does but if Corning doesn't list it...makes it confusing.

Hi all. Technically gorilla glass is kind of scratch proof depending on what's scratching it. I saw a video explaining this the other night and found it interesting. On a hardness scale I believe gg is a 8-9 depending on conditions when the sheet was produced. If anything with a smaller hardness number comes in contact with the screen it won't scratch, if something with a harder number (like sand) comes in contact with gg it will scratch.
Unfortunately these drop tests are hit and miss too. It all depends on where the impact point on the screen is and it will be different with every drop.
Hope this helps

I would guess it'll get updated eventually. Went through something similar with my LG Nitro HD last year. Previews and reviews of the phone said it had Gorilla Glass, but it wasn't listed on any official specs and wasn't on the Corning site at the time either so some people started claiming it didn't have it. At some point the Corning site got updated and the Nitro is listed now.
Due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all devices that feature Gorilla Glass. Your favorite device may include Gorilla Glass, even if you don't see it listed. Ask your manufacturer or retailer to learn more.
Don't be a bloody a$$!
Every High End phone being release has Gorilla Glass, Gorilla Glass 2, or an equivalent hardened glass product. This conversation is as old as the hills. It is scratch and break resistant, and does a good job at that, but it is not idiot proof. One good thing about GG is the amount of flex it will take. Even still if someone carries a Note II in their back pocket, I don't want to hear about it if they make a bloody a$$ of themselves doing so.
It's got Gorilla Glass. Case closed

Spare part Displays without anti shatter film (ASF)?

Hello,
a few weeks ago, I received a spare part as my display cracked and I wanted to exchange it myself. I ordered it in the UK via eBay.
As the display arrived, everything was okay - it looks the same as the original one, it is just as bright and brilliant.
But one thing confuses me. The anti shatter film that is usually part of the display unit is not there.
The dealer told me that there are no ASFs on the displays.
So far, there is no scratch on the screen and everything else is still okay. Except this detail.
Can anyone confirm this or is the display a fake one?
Thanks in advance!

What should the picture show? The display is now glued to my device and the difference is not really visible.
Usually, you can use your fingernail and feel the ASF at the edges of the glass as the film does not cover the glass completely (maybe half a millimeter is uncovered). This is not possible on my device as there is no ASF.
Do you have a Sony logo on the new display? On my phone this logo was on the ASF, not on the display itself.

Yes, the logo is on the display. On my old display it was on the ASF, too.
I thought I could remove the ASF again to get that clean look, but no.
That's sounds good... Because the Sony logo is printed in the glass... Could you post the link of the spare part?

It seems to me that most of the displays sold on eBay are fake ones as mine. Yesterday, I got another one from another seller in Germany. Same thing. You are right, it is a good idea to print the Sony logo directly on the glass.
After a few weeks with the fake display, I cannot recommend it for the following reasons:
When the display gets dirty or wet, you get crazy input immediately. I have to switch off and clean the display when my device starts to do stuff without me. Absolutely annoying.
Another detail that I noticed during my vacation is that the fake display is not usable in landscape mode when you use polarized sunglasses. The original display has no problem here.
The Sony logo is also printed a bit thicker than on the original.
Well, I got no answer from the German seller so far for my accusation that the display is fake.
And as nobody answered that he got a display without an ASF, I assume that only fake displays do not have it.

Quality feel (use of materials)

Rate this thread to express how you think the OnePlus 3 feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).

congratulations on this, OnePlus!
I think I prefered the sandstone black, but getting a dBrand skin now so
Love the look and feel of this phone. The build quality is top notch and right up there with the bigger companies handsets. Got the rosewood/Kevlar case for it as well which imo makes the phone feel way better in hand, more grip and slightly thicker sides make it easy to handle I find.
Only had this phone a week and there are sooo many hairline and mega scratches on my screen. I decided that this would be my first no screen protector phone and I really regret it. I baby my phone so much but i guess the GG4 isn't that scratch resistant.
I dropped mine today. Face down onto concrete.
Not a mark on it!! The Black Apricot cover had a few marks on it on the corners but it did its job and because of the wood grain finish it's only noticeable under close examination.
Have ordered a new case though and my old one is on eBay UK. 99p reserve if you want to search for a bargain

Honestly, one of the most underrated features is the ceramic home/fingerprint reader.
My friend's much more expensive S7 has a plastic button that already has scratches on it and feels very cheap vs ceramic.
The build quality of the screen is poor, very poor.
2 days ago my OP3 slipped from my pocket when I was sitting in my car when opening the door. It felt on the asphalt from not more then 60cm / 23,5 inch on its back, and the display was totally cracked over the hole surface. My other phones like Sony Experia ZL, HTC One M8, Samsung S6 Edge have felt very often on the floor and never had any problems. Except for my Galaxy S6 Edge, that felt from the 1st floor, hitting multiple steps to end on the tiled floor . But even then the damage was a lot less then what I experienced on my OP3. It had just some cracks on the side.
The damage I got on the OP3 after such a little hit is inacceptable for Gorilla Glass 4. Or there is an error in the production process that causes the glass not to be as strong as it should be, or it isn't Gorilla Glass 4.
My Samsung S6 Edge has also Gorilla Glass 4 and the kind of damage and cracks are not the same structure as the one on the OP3.
PS. I will try to upload later today an image of the broken OP3 display.

First of all I didn't say it should be unbreakable.
But this is a copy paste from the site of Corning.
The sick feeling of dropping a phone and breaking the screen is all too common. Which is why Corning's top scientists performed thousands of hours of tests to understand how and why glass breaks when dropped. Then we developed a way to deliver dramatically improved performance against drops on rough surfaces. How dramatic? In*lab tests, Gorilla Glass 4 withstood such drops up to 2X better than competitive glass designs. And our drop tests are the toughest in the industry, conducted on rough surfaces that best approximate the real world of jagged streets, sidewalks and parking lots.*So when your whole life is on your device, help protect it with Gorilla Glass 4.
And my experience and that of my others is that the OP3 screen is to fragile compared with other phones using Gorilla Glass 4 and even 3.
And it is unable to attend what is said on the Corning website.

Hello!
Every my phone I had cared with super love so I had never damage any. But OP3 slipped from my pocket at exact same situation like you have described -when i get in or go get out from my car. And it is crazy to say but it happend to me 4 times with no protection on phone at all :crying::crying:.
Once time it felt even on rocks on display. And I happy to say, that screen is still undamaged just there are few scratches on stock plastic cover and also there is few scratches on sides but very minor. So maybe i was lucky or your screen was faulty..
I just got this phone today. I am really loving the look and feel of this phone. It is quite slim and lightweight, which makes it feel quite delicate but in a good way (not in the fragile sense).
A faulty (batch of) screen(s) could be possible since multiple persons are complaining that there screen has broken to easily.
But in that case OnePlus should do something for its customers. Because now I lost all confidence in the build quality of the display.

Look this is a topic about the build quality of the OP3. If you like it or not, but my experience is that the display is to fragile for Gorilla Glass 4, and I'm not alone to experience this.
It's not my job to take it up with Samsung or even Corning. That's the role of OnePlus.
And yes I will open a support ticket. But we all know this will probably have no impact.
So some or maybe all OP3, have a fragile display.

Look man laugh as much as you want. I had a lot of phones and none were fragile. They even didn't have Gorilla Glass 4. For me the endurance of this screen is ****. And yes I have the right
To write down my experience and my feelings about it. You can call it complaining online. If that makes you happy.
We will see the day your screen breaks after a hit from 1feet high.
I have tested the display of my S6 edge by hitting it multiple time on the corner of the table. I needed 11 attempts to Crack the display that already had some damage on the side. And the force I needed to break it was enormous

Polarized display on the Redmi Note 5 Pro

Hi,
Because I just got a pair of polarized sunglasses, I have discovered that the display on my RN5 Pro seems to be polarized. While this sounds good, the practical effect is that if I hold my phone vertically while wearing my sunglasses, I can't see the screen at all. I can only see it if I hold the phone horizontally.
Is this something that is physically part of the display? Is there any option to change/rotate or turn off the polarization? Any ideas?
Thanks!

Ho, I was about to ask a similar question, that a coincidence
The fact is, the redmi note 5 ha a polarized filter (like all LCD panels) oriented at 90° from the one of other smartphone I had (nexus 5X, Redmi note 4, etc.). As per consequence I can't see anything in portait mode but it's all clear in landscape, witch is terrible for car use.
If a screen protector can mitigate this issue, it worth the try

Hi All,
I put a cheap glass screen protector (a dollar or two from ebay) on the phone, and the problem disappeared. It would be interesting to learn the physics behind it, but practically, all you have to know is put any kind of glass screen protector on and the issue goes away. And you keep the phone looking good. So bonus.
Thanks for the discussion, everyone.

No Gorilla Glass on this one, probably it will crack after a while (lot of comments about that). You need to buy some screen protection asap.
Better to buy an original one that comes with Gorilla glass.
Yes I agree. I mentioned it if you wanted something cheap. It doesn't have gorilla glass and there might be some light bleed from physical buttons.
If you want the REAL original parts I would go with

Agree, only dragon-tt gave me satisfaction, I tried eBay and aliexpress I've been really disappointed by the quality of the assembly (screen+frame)
Yes, one thing that I noticed straight away when I removed the original screen to put the new one is that aliexpress' copy was thinner and looked very fragile. I used b-7000 glue and it fitted perfectly with not light leaks. But in the end not so strong...one small drop and it cracked. With the original I had multiple drops for almost two years from more height with no cracks.
