Any idea on speaker location? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I haven't seen anything regarding speaker location. I assume it's not gonna be front facing.

you assumed right

Correct. It's on the bottom, and, only one.

Big Bad Bummer

i think like Note 7 and iPhone 6S one speaker but good qaulity

I think it's an extremely strange design choice to not have front facing speakers on any phone (not just the Pixel). If I need to use the phone speaker(s), I really can't think of any situation where I would want the sound pointed away from me. I don't have any of my home stereo or TV speakers facing the wall or floor, and I wouldn't want the same in a phone when I'm trying to consume content. It seems similar to having speakers in your car installed on the outside facing away from you. If I'm having a conversation with someone, I don't talk to the floor or turn around and talk away from the person. I don't understand what benefit the bottom or rear facing speakers give anyone.
Also, I'm sure it's not this simple for the designers and engineers, but on the Pixel, if the speakers are already at the bottom of the phone, wouldn't it seem simple to just have them pointing towards you, instead of down? They could be installed in literally the same place, just with a different orientation.

I'm hoping when they single firing that they mean it's just a single firing into the space into the bottom part of the phone and comes out both speakers. It's mono sound but at least it comes out both slits instead of just one. Wishful thinking though. I feel like they had a spec wishlist that they created back in 2014 or something.

From what I've seen there are two holes, one of each side of the USB-C port... How is that only one speaker?

Right just like iPhones have been the past few years etc.
I am pretty sure I saw a video on YouTube somewhere saying only one fires up. If I can find it I will link it here for you. Of course, I hope I a wrong since I ordered one.

Hmmm, now that I think of it, it could be for the microphone. Here's the video where I noticed it... He even plays some music.
https://youtu.be/O_T5Nd2DkCo?t=4m25s

There is only one speaker....I think the bottom right....but there are two holes just like the iPhone....it is there for symmetry. Just like the top bezel is the size it needs to be to accommodate headphone jack and other stuff....so for symmetry they made the bottom bezel the same size. I wish it was unsymmetrical for the bezel and had a smaller bezel...hence lager screen size with the same phone dimensions.

Zagg smartbuds, Updated, with a review

Zagg just released these new smartbuds ~ zagg /audio/smart-buds.php~, (can't post actual links yet).
some of there specs are
"Compatible with iPhone, iPhone 3G/3GS, iPhone 4 and all 3.5mm jacks"
I wonder if there "controls will work with Android or at least Double Twist
I went ahead and pulled the trigger on these things and here is what I think so far
Pros:
noise canceling mic (haven't tested it yet)
extensive cord management
armor covered cords, makes them tough and tangle free, REALLY!
built control works with Mixing app
comfortable
Cons:
a little flat in my opinion, compared to shure SE210 but mixing's equalizer made up for it
volume control is analog, it only controls the volume to the phones, independent to phone volume
Still doesn't have the remote functionality of some iphone head phones
I was really hoping to get a little more out of these. I have to say they a probably have the most feature for android users than any other head phones out there. They have one button and a slider on the "mic" part. The one button works like the one button for the latest shuffle, one click=pause, one click= play, double click=forward track, and triple click=back one track. The volume slide is analog so the range of volume depends on how loud the volume is set on the phone. Overall these are pretty good, I'd say the best for the money. the coating of the wires really does make them pretty tangle free. A good buy for $50, a better buy if you check slick deals for a coupon.
I hope they work well with me EVO
Well I just ordered a set of these as I think they will be perfect for work. Still haven't found what buttons will actually work with the EVO but if I can at least answer and hang up then they'll be way better then the Sony set I just returned. Plus I love the way there designed to wear. I have a set of Shure headphones that you wear like that and they are awesome.
it looks like they dropped the price to $50 on zaggs site. and I was able to get them for $40 with the discount code "ZAGG20"
I'll try and post back how well they work with my EVO when I get them.

Actually it's water mixed with baby oil. plus they come with a multipurpose squidgy q-tip. JK.
I really can't wait for mine to come in. I figured the volume control would be analog although I was hoping for digital. and I never really expected them to sound as good as my Shure se210's but when you consider the price difference and the terrible build quality on Shure's optional Mic (which only lasted 6 months for me tops. Which is the same problem I had for the original Shure extension cable) I'm sure I will be happy with them. I mean considering these have a longer warranty and cost the same as I paid for the Shure Mic alone I won't mind carrying these with me too work and risking damage. and my se210's can stay home by my computer where they belong.

well I just got mine in haven't got a chance to give them a good full test yet.
I have noticed that the button does answer incoming calls although it doesn't end them on my Evo running DamageControl V3.5. Instead it mutes the Mic. This is rather annoying and I hope theres an option somewhere to change that so I can hang up on people with out having to take my phone out.
I also haven't been able to get the previous track by triple pressing the button instead it goes forward a track and then pauses.
I'll give more info after I've had more of a chance to play around with them.
Edit: Ok so I did a little looking and it seems a long press on the button will end the call. So now I'm happy. So when in a call a quick press mutes the mic and a long press ends the call.
You probably couldn't run with these, huh. I need a pair of earphones/headphone that I can run with that has a remote so I can play and pause and skip without having to reach for my phone.

I'm not a runner but I don't see any reason you couldn't run with these. They fit in your ears pretty tight and with the slides you can adjust them so the cable won't tug them out your ear.

Huh never heard of that before. I use to do a little running with my old Sony in-ears and don't remember any such issue. Granted I have very little endurance so I was never running for long. Well, if that`s the case.. maybe some smaller buds would do the trick? (I saw smaller ones on Zagg`s site).
Please note that I haven`t used any bud-type headphones so I`m only speculating.

Well they do come with different sizes. But the problem with buds is if they don't seal then they don't sound right. Plus they would be more likely to fall out. Although I wonder how well it would work if you used the foam style tips and cut breather grooves. You would probably loose some sound quality if it worked but at least they shouldn't fall out all the time. If I get a chance to go to the track in the next couple of days I might try a few things but between rain and drama I haven't gotten over there yet.

everyone has different reviews, so you cannot use comfort for a reason to buy these. i went through 8 different models of bluetooths at bestbuy before i found one that was good.
yes they hated me for doing it, but that's their fault with the 30day return policy

I too have been trying to make one, although I'm trying to make one of slightly higher quality. To me the method you have chosen sort of makes it a more attractive option to just have it be laying on the table. I have been experimenting with several prototype concepts of mine and I will consider sharing if any of them work. My biggest limitation obviously is the lack of a 3d printer, so I have to make it out of sculpt-able materials.
Sweet, please keep us updated.

I just made one over the weekend. I made it out of wood and scrap aluminum that I had laying around. I don't have pictures right now but I will post them if anyone is interested. It is more of a bedside clock radio adaptation for the phone than a desktop dock.
Some"features" and what I did;
1. Small wood box (9"wide X 5" deep X 5" tall).
2. Phone slides/docks into aluminum plate on front.
2a. USB plug goes to wall charger.
2b. Headphone jack goes to amplifier inside dock
3. Internal amp has control nob under the phone for Volume, Bass and Treble.
4. Each side of the dock box has 3" speaker powered by the internal amp.
The first build is black with brushed aluminum plates. By the dimensions listed above you can see the size is slightly large. That is intended to provide good acoustics for the chosen speakers and amplifier. I have not solid mounted the plugs yet as I do not like my fist dock plate design and will be changing it. After the dock plate is finished I will hard mount the plugs for smooth single action docking.
If anyone is interested in seeing this monstrosity I can post up some pics. I am happy with the design but need to finalize it. I think it;s nice considering it was done with scraps around the house.
I made a simple one out of an expired AAA card...
My AAA card expires in 4 weeks. Now I know what to do with it.
Crap this means I have to get an AAA card now...
Very cool, and it is portable.

Ok, here are some shots. Still need to make a new dock plate and I need to epoxy the plugs in place. After the plugs are locked down I will make a small cover for them. The cables you see in the back are USB, AMP Power, and a small jumper for a connection i did not have room for inside.
The speakers are 3" full range with 2.5" drivers and covered with pc fan grills. From left to right the knobs control Volume(power on/off), Bass, and Treble. The use of 1/2" particle board and large air space allows it to give a nice thumb on the lower freq.
The purpose of this is for bedroom clock radio/alarm clock. It is a bit to large and redundant for most computer desks.

Some others suggested that, too. Would be cool because it can be universal to several model phones. The parts were from junk in my garage and computer room so I am sure it would be hard to replicate. Could be much smaller with the right parts but not sure what kind of cost it would entail. I figured some others on here could give some ideas for the next version and possibly get some inspiration from this one.

[Q] Does your GNII wobble/rock when it's laying on a flat surface?

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a GNII. Since it's pretty big, I'll probably be using it while laying it on a flat surface.
Watching this review, I got a bit worried:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=VdsMwGWvhO4#t=205s
Doe anyone else's GNII behave like that? if so, is it very noticeable/annoying?
Thanks.
Yes, they all do it if they are bare. The speaker grill has a raised hump on it so that is not touching the desk so the sound on speaker phone isn't muted.
It's a design feature not a fault.
The video reviewer is a fud if he didn't realise that.

So the more import question is, is it noticeable or annoying? Will I be able to live with it?
With a nice dual layer case, it sits flat and has no wobbles.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I have mine in one case or another so don't notice it but I could see if could be annoying if you had your phone flat on a table and you are typing on it.
Realistically though would it not be in a case? Even the thinist of cases would hide it.
But then you won't hear the speaker as well

Yeah, I guess you're right. I think I'll also be getting a case when I get my GNII.

Slight rattle noise

Does anyone else have a slight rattle noise coming from the camera area/back corner? You cant really hear it unless you tap on the back of the tablet lightly. My old(2012) nexus doesnt make this sound and not sure if this is normal on the new 1s or not.
i hear a tapping noise when i tap on it.
come on man, do you buy products to find problems? do not make this into the screen lifting issue with the first nexus 7. noone needs you exchanging yours a hundred times taking away possible purchases from other people.
Pretty sure it's normal. Same noise on my Nexus 4.
please dont start star the "screen lift" saga of 2012 with the 2013 model some people look for things wrong.. if you have buyers remorse take it back.
its the camera. you will notice that on a lot of devices with cameras. my Gnex does this, my wifes Droid Razr HD does this as well. my thunderbolt did it too. pretty sure it is something inside the camera housings.
dont tap there. its nothing to worry about.
i swear, the only time i find stuff wrong with my electronics is when OTHER people point them out.

My GNex doesnt make this particular sound, it makes a sound from the cover not being flush with the back tho.
Either way not a big deal, was just wondering if it was normal or not.
ridiculous mentality from some people here. A LOT of users, me included, go to forums like XDA to learn about potential build flaws because some of us actually care about getting quality controlled devices for our money. I actually didn't buy the Nexus 10 because of all the reports, both from forums and in reviews, about the bleeding, and I'm grateful for all those reports.
Just because you'd happily pay for a product with obvious defects and then defend the manufacturer to the bone like it was your employer doesn't mean everyone have that attitude. In the year 2012 gluing a screen to a bezel shouldn't have been a problem.
I'm not saying the OP has discovered a flaw here but any report of potential flaws is appreciated by someone like me and your overly defensive mentality is sad to see. Don't decide for others what a flaw is cause it is highly subjective.

i agree with that. its just some times (like the N7 screen lift saga) the defect isn't even noticeable until someone points it out to you.

Its the camera lenses. Perfectly normal. All cameras do this to some extent.
My galaxy nexus doesn't.... But remember it having a 0 shutter lag. Maybe it has a unique camera or something. Most other cameras click when tapped.

does anyone else have it as bad as me?
I hear it even if i put if I put it down lightly.
example: flat on table with something soft under, pick up top area around 1cm and give it a little force pushing it down.
my first 1 was definitely louder than the replacement, i could hear it through the box. my replacement still does it when i place it on my lap or table, but its not as bad.
im pretty sure all of them do it. so if you dont have any of the other issues(dead pixel/QI not working etc) people are mentioning i would just keep it.

Warning about Tech 21 Evo Case

I purchased two Tech 21 Evo Check ($39.95) - https://rhinoshield.io/products/goog...l-2-pixel-2-xl and I received them today to find out they have a headphone jack near the USB-C charger port. I called asking if this was a mistake and they assured me this feature is intentional, but don't know why the feature is there.
I expressed my disappointment with the product and asked for a refund but want to ensure other XDA members know what to expect from a case priced at $39.95.
https://imgur.com/a/jYhz4
Also, any recommendations on a slim case that will protect from drops similar to Tech21 without the added "headphone feature"?
Sure it's not for a microphone hole? My TPU Pixel 2 case has a hole there as well but not big enough for a headphone jack.

Based on videos and pictures, that is for the microphone but that is a HUGE hole. Maybe it looks huge because its thick.
A close look at the Pixel 2 XL and there's a hole at the top - https://www.verizonwireless.com/accessories/tech21-evo-check-case-for-pixel-2-xl/
I know i'm only looking at a picture but that hole does not seem big enough for a 3.5mm head phone jack.

I'm embarrassed but glad I've found it is NOT a headphone jack. It is a microphone array.
Mods, please delete this thread as it serves only negative purpose due to my ignorance.
