[Q] Does your GNII wobble/rock when it's laying on a flat surface? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a GNII. Since it's pretty big, I'll probably be using it while laying it on a flat surface.
Watching this review, I got a bit worried:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=VdsMwGWvhO4#t=205s
Doe anyone else's GNII behave like that? if so, is it very noticeable/annoying?
Thanks.

Yes, they all do it if they are bare. The speaker grill has a raised hump on it so that is not touching the desk so the sound on speaker phone isn't muted.
It's a design feature not a fault.
The video reviewer is a fud if he didn't realise that.

Thanks for that info.
So the more import question is, is it noticeable or annoying? Will I be able to live with it?

With a nice dual layer case, it sits flat and has no wobbles.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

I have mine in one case or another so don't notice it but I could see if could be annoying if you had your phone flat on a table and you are typing on it.
Realistically though would it not be in a case? Even the thinist of cases would hide it.
But then you won't hear the speaker as well

Yeah, I guess you're right. I think I'll also be getting a case when I get my GNII.
Thanks guy

The water proof thread

So to kick it off, I've got two "pouches" that are supposed to be watertight. I haven't checked if they are actually water proof, but I can say something about the fit (or misfit).
1. Had the Hagløfs Watatait for the S1. Plastic made it impossible to insert the phone. I had to use a metallic case on the phone to get it in the pouch.
The S3 have the same problem. Its slightly less "clingy", but edges on phone get stuck before fully inserted. There is no room for a phone with case.
2. Got the Overboard case from mobilefun. S3 slides nicely into the pouch. Locking feels safe enough, to the point of being over-engineered. The clear plastic window is slightly small, making it hard to pull down the notification menu. Also a bit fiddly to find the power and volume buttons.
Its also a very tight fit. I suspect its made for the iphone, with room for protection for that phone. Any case that offer enough protection for the S3 make it too big for this pouch.
So anyone else have a watertight pouch case they want to share with the rest of us?
I'm a biker, after much trial and error I found the Northcore surfing cases and bought one for my old phone (Desire). Got my S3 today and while tight it does fit the bare phone with no problems and leaves it easily operable. I usually have the phone strapped to my left forearm and have some capacitive thread stitched into the index finger of the right glove and a bluetooth headset for sound. Add in Tasker to deal with automation and it makes the phone really easy to use.
This is the beastie:
CLICKY
I'm hoping Liquidpel will be available for this device. http://www.liquipel.com/
Basically they coat the entire phone + internals with hydrophobic material, that way even when water gets into the phone, it remains working.
I used a waterproof pouch when I was on my last cruise. Put my epic touch in it and went snorkeling for hours with it in my pocket. It was under water the whole time, no leaks. I bought it from Amazon.com.

The tight fit is a problem, to be ideal, it should be room for something like Otterbox defender or Ballistic-whatever-its-name-was. A drop in one of the pouches with bare phone is nearly as bad as a drop of the bare phone, and SIII doesn't take a lot of abuse on its own.
So looking for something with a bit more room, that still have decent opening to operate the screen.
I suspect you'll have problems finding anything that big, the S3 isn't a small handset to start with and by the time it's cased up it doubles the bulk.
Good luck :good:
If your looking for waterproof bag i have been using a type of waterproof ziplock for years. its called Aloksak. I have swam across rivers a few time and my gear in it is always dry.
Its certified waterproof to 60 metres and tested by the Navy Diving Unit.
I got mine through amazon and there are alot of sizes some even can fit a rifle. I have some that are really beat up scratches and stretch marks from sharp object and they are not even leaking.
Screen is 100% usable and its dirt cheap.
I am looking for a decent water proof case myself. I have ran across the drycase from drycase.com and have contacted them in an attempt to verify that the s3 will fit in the standard case without having to get the tablet sized one.
It does not offer drop protection however they say its rated to 100 feet (30 meters) so i should be able to take this on a 40 foot reef dive.
I really want to get rid of my camera housing as its for an old sony 5mp camera that barely works anymore.
Drycase
I just received my Drycase from Amazon. So far here are my thoughts on it with the S3. I have never owned a waterproof case like this before so perhaps some of these issues are common to cases like this. Keep in mind I have only had the case for a couple hours so these are just my initial impressions.
1. It is a little difficult to get the phone into and out of the case. It sticks to the plastic sides of the case.
2. Although the Drycase sales rep told me that the S3 would fit in the case and it does for the most part, it is hard to get it far enough into the case so that you can connect the headphone adapter and still have it be out of the way of the top black flap and closing mechanism.
3. Once the phone is in the case and the air is pumped out, the plastic sides of the case fit pretty tight to the body of the phone. This is nice as it makes the screen easy to see, however it also makes the volume and power buttons on the sides of the case difficult to press. I was trying to use the case to take underwater photos and video and because you can not use the touch screen when underwater I mapped the volume down button to the camera shutter, but it was difficult to press this button when the phone was in the case.
4. When the headphone/microphone jack inside the bag is connected to the phone any sound you record with a video will not be recorded since I assume the internal microphone is disconnected. So if you want sound with video you would need to either not plug in the internal cable or connect an external mic. Not a big deal for shooting underwater but if you are going to be moving between above and below water you may want to just leave this cable disconnected.
Anyone seen or tried this pouch?

I have been able to swim around in the pool, go underwater and still hear my music, can make calls too, need to keep the mic out of the water, otherwise they cant here you.
Also , FYI, when you are under water, you cant use the phone well, it just wont pick up your print.
I have decided to start surfing and never go anywhere unless I have my phone and headphones. I have been debating on ordering this. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=350585644786 I think music might help with the frustration of learning.

How do you get the headphone line out of the OB pouch? The one with integrated headphone jack looks interesting. Maybe the Note-sized pouch is big enough for a S3 with a Ballistics case. Worth a try?
I forgot what its called but I seen a website that will take apart your phone and water proof the components so you don't have to have a waterproof case on. Just take the bare phone swimming with you n you're good

Cases and trapped sound

Hello,
I have now a TPU case that is OK, but has a serious problem. When on a table and a notification rings, for a reasonable volume, I can hear it. It looks like the sound is trapped by the case and the table.
Do you know of any case which have any kind of knob that let the sound going out? I know there are cases for other phones that has one knob in each corner, so the phone stand in the surface like a table with very short legs.
Fer
Could you attach a picture or a link to the case?To be honest, lg kinda made a mistake with the position of the speaker. Why?because of the flat back, when you put the phone on a flath surface,it's blocking the speaker,so you won't be able to hear it loud and clear. Same happens with the case.I also have a silicon case and facing kinda the same issues

This is Otterbox case for LGOG with I suspect has a knob in the speaker: http://cdn-store.crackberry.com/store_images/product_images/accessories/large/13117.jpg
And here is the nexus 4 ringke fusion case with has one little knob in each corner: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8525173164_4d64efe089_z.jpg
I have read in a spanish forum that there are people who has put a sticky in order to stand up a little the phone, so the sound can go out with clarity, but that sound to me like a dirty solution.
I continue looking for the perfect case
Same silicon as mine.Yep,no doubt,it's more like a design error.i always place my phone upside down or i'm looking for an uneven surface

Well, I think is a flaw in design, but most phone makers are putting the speaker in the back. I only know of some HTC models which has in the front, and I think iPhone has in on the sides. It is more common that it appears.
I have put a bit of imagination and make a little workaround. I will see about it. Hope it will last. See the pictures:

Slight rattle noise

Does anyone else have a slight rattle noise coming from the camera area/back corner? You cant really hear it unless you tap on the back of the tablet lightly. My old(2012) nexus doesnt make this sound and not sure if this is normal on the new 1s or not.
i hear a tapping noise when i tap on it.
come on man, do you buy products to find problems? do not make this into the screen lifting issue with the first nexus 7. noone needs you exchanging yours a hundred times taking away possible purchases from other people.
Pretty sure it's normal. Same noise on my Nexus 4.
please dont start star the "screen lift" saga of 2012 with the 2013 model some people look for things wrong.. if you have buyers remorse take it back.
its the camera. you will notice that on a lot of devices with cameras. my Gnex does this, my wifes Droid Razr HD does this as well. my thunderbolt did it too. pretty sure it is something inside the camera housings.
dont tap there. its nothing to worry about.
i swear, the only time i find stuff wrong with my electronics is when OTHER people point them out.

My GNex doesnt make this particular sound, it makes a sound from the cover not being flush with the back tho.
Either way not a big deal, was just wondering if it was normal or not.
ridiculous mentality from some people here. A LOT of users, me included, go to forums like XDA to learn about potential build flaws because some of us actually care about getting quality controlled devices for our money. I actually didn't buy the Nexus 10 because of all the reports, both from forums and in reviews, about the bleeding, and I'm grateful for all those reports.
Just because you'd happily pay for a product with obvious defects and then defend the manufacturer to the bone like it was your employer doesn't mean everyone have that attitude. In the year 2012 gluing a screen to a bezel shouldn't have been a problem.
I'm not saying the OP has discovered a flaw here but any report of potential flaws is appreciated by someone like me and your overly defensive mentality is sad to see. Don't decide for others what a flaw is cause it is highly subjective.

i agree with that. its just some times (like the N7 screen lift saga) the defect isn't even noticeable until someone points it out to you.
The volume rocker rattles when I tap it. I've noticed on very smartphone and tablet I've handled pretty much does it as well.
Built like a tank, no issues here.

my volume rocker is solid, definitely seems like its coming from the camera.
Its the camera lenses. Perfectly normal. All cameras do this to some extent.
My galaxy nexus doesn't.... But remember it having a 0 shutter lag. Maybe it has a unique camera or something. Most other cameras click when tapped.

does anyone else have it as bad as me?
I hear it even if i put if I put it down lightly.
example: flat on table with something soft under, pick up top area around 1cm and give it a little force pushing it down.
my first 1 was definitely louder than the replacement, i could hear it through the box. my replacement still does it when i place it on my lap or table, but its not as bad.
im pretty sure all of them do it. so if you dont have any of the other issues(dead pixel/QI not working etc) people are mentioning i would just keep it.

I am confused about this , i mean , my nexus 7 has the identical issue even it is a very very slight tap...
Is it similar to yours?
not only the camera area but also the upper part of back cover...
it seems to be a normal to make the noise from the camera lens. i wouldnt worry about it too much.
I am still confused why some others have said they dont have the sound tho.

I think it's an extremely strange design choice to not have front facing speakers on any phone (not just the Pixel). If I need to use the phone speaker(s), I really can't think of any situation where I would want the sound pointed away from me. I don't have any of my home stereo or TV speakers facing the wall or floor, and I wouldn't want the same in a phone when I'm trying to consume content. It seems similar to having speakers in your car installed on the outside facing away from you. If I'm having a conversation with someone, I don't talk to the floor or turn around and talk away from the person. I don't understand what benefit the bottom or rear facing speakers give anyone.
Also, I'm sure it's not this simple for the designers and engineers, but on the Pixel, if the speakers are already at the bottom of the phone, wouldn't it seem simple to just have them pointing towards you, instead of down? They could be installed in literally the same place, just with a different orientation.
I'm hoping when they single firing that they mean it's just a single firing into the space into the bottom part of the phone and comes out both speakers. It's mono sound but at least it comes out both slits instead of just one. Wishful thinking though. I feel like they had a spec wishlist that they created back in 2014 or something.

Hmmm, now that I think of it, it could be for the microphone. Here's the video where I noticed it... He even plays some music.
https://youtu.be/O_T5Nd2DkCo?t=4m25s
There is only one speaker....I think the bottom right....but there are two holes just like the iPhone....it is there for symmetry. Just like the top bezel is the size it needs to be to accommodate headphone jack and other stuff....so for symmetry they made the bottom bezel the same size. I wish it was unsymmetrical for the bezel and had a smaller bezel...hence lager screen size with the same phone dimensions.

loosening hinge

Is anyone else noticing that the hinge has some play in it when the device is closed.
Should I be worried about this. Only had it a week so could return back to At&t before the 14th day. Wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?
I don't have any play in the hinge when closed and I've had the Fold almost a month now. I'd say return it back to AT&T before the return policy and exchange it just for peace of mind and what seems to be a factory defect.
The hinge becomes loose over a period of time, and when closed, the plastic trim around the inner screen creaks. I've gone through 3 folds and they all had this issue.

As far as the noise, I'm now on my 4th fold and all but the newest one makes the creaking noise. It's the nature of the beast. I don't like something that cost $2k to sound like something that costs a fraction of that, but for now, that's the price to pay. For me, the noise doesn't bother me enough to part with my Fold. There are too many great things about the phone that I'm not willing to give up lol

do you think theres a chance your 4th one doesn't make any noises because of the "1st batch blues" for any tech devices?
maybe possibly you have a 2nd or 3rd batch phone?
thanks for the update though, that loosening hinge was really putting me off from buying the phone.
sucks to see that quality control is still a little random, even after all the delays.
I get a strange noise too when closed thinking of contacting samsung about this in a few days no rush bought of ebay like new no marks £1190 it was either that or the whopping £1,900 from samsung so a good saving with the buds.
