Note 7 recall

Engaget is reporting a world wide recall of the Note 7 because of exploding batteries.
Hopefully they will also deal with the Gorilla Glass 5 problem too.

It seems a full recall of all phones sold. Hopefully they also replace the Samsung screen protector I bought with the phone

An official statement by Samsung.
"Statement on Galaxy Note 7
Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note 7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.
To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers' safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note 7.
For customers who already have Galaxy Note 7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks.
We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause in the market but this is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers. We are working closely with our partners to ensure the replacement experience is as convenient and efficient as possible."

Thank goodness I haven't gotten my unit yet!!! Long business trips do have their benefits.
One interesting takeaway from the CNN story's the quote from the President of Sammy's Mobile Communications about how much the recall's going to cost: "it is a big amount that is heartbreaking." Looks like they're going to have huge write-offs.
Maybe they'll have to bin all the batches they're recalling and the suspect ones in inventory. Then there's the issue of lost sales and some people not wanting to buy even later batches because -- well, because you never know. I mean -- Google Pixel Phone Plus (or whatever it's called) -- here I come!!!
The problem with these metal and glass devices is they can't just open these things, replace the batteries and re-ship them. Those glass backs will inevitably break during the process. The colored foil behind the glass is also going to have to be replaced. Then there's the waterproofing...
I wonder if it's simply a battery flaw or a design flaw that causes the device to overheat under certain circumstances. Global recalls like this don't just happen unless there's a very serious issue, regardless of what Sammy's lawyers wrote in their official release. I've been buying smartphones since the early days and this is the only time I can remember a recall of this scale happening.
While it's nice that Sammy was so quick to address it, it's a damn shame because the Note 7 was their best device yet.
The irony is that if Sammy had insisted on keeping their plastic designs -- the same designs we crucified them for -- or maintained removable batteries in metal-framed phones (hello Note 4!) -- this could've been addressed with in-store battery exchanges. Again, that's assuming it's not a design flaw.

And I have such a good device too. None of this user created lag or battery drain.... Sigh.

Interestingly me and a friend of mine have not had any of the issues mentioned here "yet" battery life is amazing and no boot loop. And we were also part of the pre-order batch.

I demand compensation for my Temperglass screen!!... everything else i could backup and transfer easily... i still have to fine tune a few other setting that dont let me "backup setting"

After this Samsung's recall statement will be known worldwide, IMHO the Note 7 reputation, confidence and appeal for the customers will be heavily affected....
Therefore I personally expect the announcement of the release of a new revised model, for example a Note "7s" with a Snapdragon 821 and 6 GB of RAM, very soon, just before Christmas time, to compete with new Apple's and Google's smartphones.

That's actually a great point. I love my phone, it's performing perfectly, but you don't just do a worldwide recall because a couple people used a bad charger. They were able to recreate it.
It is sad, this is undoubtedly the best phone Samsung has ever made and it's going to be a financial and PR disaster. On the other hand, those of us who stick with it will probably get a 2nd promotional item haha.

Really sucks but yeah hopefully they will give us something free for the inconvenience or some money for the screen protectors everyone has already purchased and put on the phone...
Feel bad for them though and all of the bad pr. This is an amazing phone and I love it. I guess they will be taking quality control much more seriously in the future (they should have originally since it is the most expensive phone ever).

The phone is still to be released in the UK, was due to be released today I think. The recall will probably delay that by quite some time.
Hopefully Samsung can narrow the problem down to a specific set of serial numbers. A global recall is very unusual, and does perhaps point to a design flaw rather than the batteries.
Apple will be enjoying this...

Today was the official date, but Carphone Warehouse gave me my N7 on Tuesday!

DITTO on the Screen Protector issue!
It was so dang hard to find my genuine samsung screen protectors, not to mention the cost. It came with two but used them both already since both my wife and I have the same phones. Right after I finalized my purchase from ebay (the only US seller I've found period), the guy jacked the price from $16.99 to $99 and then to a clown-shoes $299. The samsung SP is actually curved and, IMO, feels great. Hopefully I can get them to pony up a replacement set.

You know what. They had a chance to fix this. Now they screwed over their most faithful customers the SECOND time. Causing most of us expences for accessories etc we are likely never to get back. Causing us anxiety keeping us in the dark. As far as I am concerned, the company can die. It is one thing to mess up once. No, they did it TWICE. I am so mad right now.

Or make that ~6" Note that was looming and tested. Perhaps the battery was designed for the flat version and got too crammed in the edged version.

We all are... And the frustrating part is that there is no other phone that would even compare to Note 7... maybe S7E but it must to receive Grace UI fast. But still the body of N7 will be only awailable with S8 and maybe we will get a 4000 battery and a 6GB of RAM. But to wait for like 5 month nahh...

I would buy a Note 7 that is recalled, as long as it wasn't getting hot through use and charging. I'd buy one for about $400. But not more. I don't have more than $400 to burn.

Sell them to Weber?

You can expect an update disabling these phones and an IMEI block.

I can certainly see why you feel this way. My wife and I got 3 different Samsung covers (flip cover, LED and the see-through) and a variety of leather cases and screen protectors. I'd be surprised if I get the money back I spend on that. And what to think of the vendors who produced these, and likely have lots in stock... Ugh, I'd hate to be on that end. It's seriously frustrating indeed... I guess I'm glad I still have my Note 4, most likely I'll go back to that until there's something comparable

They better give people time to make necessary backups and whatnot, or I expect several class action lawsuits... they may already happen anyways, who knows.

totally inaccurate. IMEI blocking is done strictly through carriers. Since Samsung has no idea what phones are used on what carriers, they cannot block IMEI numbers.

If they dropped all Note 7s to the North, will they consider it an Act of War?

Or offer a mains-powered upgrade? So you have to plug it in to use it?

I was just told Samsung is going to "turn off" the Note 7

In a chat with US Cellular I was just told "with the recall, it will not be able to stay on your account much longer, due at some point, Samsung will be turning off all the phones on all carriers."
I asked when but she said they do not know the date yet.
She also said I could re activate my Note 7 (which I didn't think was allowed) if the Note 5 I purchased online doesn't work properly.

It is inevitable.
They will try to get everyone to return or exchange their Note 7s first. And then this kill switch to reach out to those who has been living under a rock.
Unless you root the device and circumvent the kill switch.

I can understand that. That is until you start saying things like people "have a problem" and there is "something wrong" with people because they still have a note 7. Br0adband has said these things and worse.

what is more laughable is that he has never owned one. From memory he had/has an S7E and was thinking about upgrading (before all the shxtstorm).
I am willing to suffer a phone sizzle if it means I get a few more weeks with this fantastic phone. I understand the risks, they are significantly low, but I also understand the impact of a total battery failure (running without the 256G SD card currently to avoid damage to it in the event of the phone internally melting).
I do not appreciate BrOadbands incessant drilling of existing N7 users, worse than a 19 year old cop doing the "respect my authority" thing.
Only 2 phones have cooked in Australia, from the original batch (1 was a forum member on Whirlpool forums, the other Samsung indicated when they were quoting numbers), we were getting the second batch a bit later than you guys in the US which may have meant slightly improved production process (made in Vietnam though, if that means anything).
I am however(unfortunately) getting this replaced, as I do fly and the American FAA getting a bit nervous and doing the banning meant globally all airlines followed not to mention that Samsung are giving some financial incentives that may not last forever to replace with S7E/S7 (got told almost 2 weeks ago now by a local Samsung phone rep "your S7E is coming within 21 days"...)
I think part of the product pull by Samsung was not about an inherent fault in all units, but some inevitable butt covering, since the product reputation was tainted, no way to recover from that, the phone would be impossible to sell with all the transportation bans, and how many different battery icon colours could they use to indicate if you owned a v1,2 or 3 lol.
I do believe it had a higher than normal failure rate though, esp in the US, my speculation is the soft construction of the battery was allowing it to get sufficiently distorted during assembly that some further condition was causing battery failure for those excessively distorted (such as plate to plate crystal growth).

Essentially, it says that the anode SEI layer can break down in as low temps as 80degC including from external heating. I know when we had that dodgy Ocululus update, my CPU when I checked was over 70degC and the whole phone was very warm due to very high current draw due to the max CPU load. So heat from both current draw from the battery, and external heat from the CPU getting toasty would not have helped any phone where the battery was also a little squashed/distorted when packed into the phone during assembly.

This update is meant to correct all those replacement phones that run at 100% battery. Since this was found to be 1 of 3 suspected issues with the phone igniting the second time too

Would have preferred they nerfed the CPU instead. And disable fast charge and wireless charging. All to prevent it from generating too much heat. Limiting to 60% probably isn't going to help much.

Sorry. I didn't.
It was powered off for a few days. And I just got my V20. Turned it on to get some files out but I was shocked to find my Note 7 shut off. And then it rebooted and update my unit. And as expected, it was the 60% battery update.

If you paid any attention to the pictures we were shown about the burned out phones. There was a a complete burn out and the phones were destroyed. Not a single phone was just damaged a little and stopped working. That shows the battery had a complete or near complete charge.
The batteries burned out completely because of the amount of charge held into them. Not because of their chemical composition. If you know what I mean.
If you ever worked with batteries; You'll know they get very hot and can expand as they overcharge. Thus expansion plus the new sharp aluminum frame inside, may have been 1 of the reasons for ignition we believe.
Keeping your charge at 60/80% lowers the risk of ignition by a lot.

I actually think BroadBand or whatever actually did post a receipt of the purchase, although everyone knows you can find that on the internet. The person is a far-left lib/progressive who thinks their safe spaces are in jeopardy because a phone (Iphone 7 anyone??) may catch fire.
Anyway, I seriously, seriously doubt they will disable the phone completely. You bought the phone, and it is your phone. If you choose to use another battery inside the note 7, then press on (I have heard reports of folks trying this...it worked, but not sure of the specifics. One guy cracked his screen trying to get the battery out).
Plus, it is an FCC violation to disrupt a communications device. You don't know the person's circumstances. They may live on the fringe of civilization and haven't heard the news or didn't get the push. The first person that is harmed because their working phone was disabled will lead to humongous lawsuits.
A Sprint employee in Newnan Georgia told my daughter that Samsung would be shutting off her phone, and it was against the law for her to keep using. They pressured her hard, made her cry (she's young, first time away from home) because she couldn't get in touch with me. She didn't know what to do because she didn't want to get "arrested," which was the implication they were trying to make. She ended up getting pressured in a S7 because she was afraid of getting in trouble (and she is super furious for getting duped). She wanted to keep the phone until the release of the s8. She was in the store to pay her bill and they saw the phone sticking out of her pocket.

By the way, Samsung has publicly stated that less than half of the phones were returned. That indicates a million or so are still out there.
I promise you, PROMISE YOU, that the very FIRST Note7 to catch fire despite the recall (because not being returned), would be splattered over every news channel.
How many post-recall reports of exploding batteries have we seen??? As far as I can tell, ZERO!!!! Don't mean it won't happen, but I think the danger is over-blown. Samsung did it because of the media coverage. A single injury (if they had not recalled) given the history of the phone would have resulted in 10s of millions of dollars in damages via litigation.

It's starting to look incredibly suspicious that the moment Samsung stopped Note 7 production, the fires went with them. Could someone be pulling the strings here? 285 000 Note 7s remain in America alone, and not one to my knowledge has caught fire in the past month. 1.5 million of them, and they were catching fire every day.

I get that you didn't do a search but a similar topic is still on the first page of this subforum.

There's probably three other similar topics on this. And all of them end up with the same tiresome squabble.

Have you considered one of the reasons we no longer hear about the Note 7 going pop is due to the fact that so much media attention and warnings from Samsung and the retailers who sold the device to the owners to return them that only a die hard number of owners are still holding onto their Note's. Now after all these warnings its highly unlikely that an owner is going to complain if his or her Note 7 went pop! I would think they would just keep silent don't you? Its not a general habit for us as a race to want our mistakes highlighted.
I am sure there are other reasons as well.

Naw, everything is OK at Samsung. I own the washer. I just wear headgear and chest protection when I do the wash. I'm not worried about the Note7 either and will continue to use it until the end. I am a fortunate one though because I have protected my home with Samsung fire detection equipment and security cameras. Therefore I am very comfortable with my choices to live on the edge.
Consider these possibilities while remembering the funny tune from Monty Python. My washer explodes injuring me. I grab my Note7 to dial 911 and it bursts into flames. My fire detection equipment malfunctions allowing my home to burn down.
Who's fault is it?..... HA!

no.. i disagree. I think if mine did go "pop" that i would notify Samsung and make sure it was sent back to them. I WANT them to figure out the issue. I wouldn't be looking for any kind of payout, etc, i knew the risks when i continued to use the phone.

85% of us units have been successfully returned.
That will greatly reduce the number of new reports.

This could confuse users around the world. Since XDA is not exclusive to the U.S.

Riiiight? That's why I said US. Most of the drama in the press came from the us and the cpsc piece also came the us. That's why what I said was relevant. Cases are dying down here since only 15% remain.

The disgraceful way the media dealt with this news was nothing short of absurd.
You are correct, NO Note 7 'exploded'. An explosion, in any form, would make the detonated device fragment into many pieces sending the Note 7 all over the place including floor, ceiling, walls etc. To date, every incident has resulted in the note catching fire BUT the device itself has not fragmented. WE can see after each fire the mobile is left in one burnt piece, its not even burnt to the point of becoming unrecognisabel.
I am NOT suggesting when the Mobile has gone pop that's its acceptable! I am stating it clearly doesn't explode.
I would guess the main concern is fire, the mobile could be the ignition point or catalyst for surrounding areas to ignite thus causing a fire. Again to date I 'think' such fires have been localised to a very small area that's IF a fire was caused at all. I saw a clip of a 4x4 going up in the USA but still have not read the results of the investigation so I am discounting that incident. I suggest the problems are what could happen rather than what will happen and that is the cause of the mobile becoming black listed in more and more public areas such as aircraft, boats, trains blah blah blah.
Regardless of our differences I sincerely agree the media has made a meal out of this matter. A true storm in a tea cup.
I also think Samsung had to make the recall BUT the way that recall has been actioned has been without co-ordination world wide causing numerous clients no end of hassle that is still ongoing. Samsung Korea have not come out of this situation looking well at all.
For a communications division that sells communication devices they need to learn to.......well, communicate!
Those trying to pre order the Gear S3 like myself are having one hell of a trial. No one seems to know the date when the Gear is going to be finally available nor if it will be bluetooth or 4G? Another total ****-up.

There is a lot of "apparently" and "reports say" in those articles. In any case, to sell in those markets they would have to replace the ROM, so I don't think there is much to worry about. Besides, who turns in a phone without wiping it thoroughly?

I'm using the Note 5 and it's starting to show its age. I might consider this until the Note 8ncomes out if the price is reasonable, I'm hoping under 500.

Seeings I'm still on my note7 all I'm curious about is if I might wind up with Nougat at some point. This is incredibly harsh on everybody who gave them up. We forced you to give your phone to us and now we're giving them away cheap to somebody else. Whole thing from start to finish has been so **** on note7 owners.

Why? Everyone got a full refund. If they've solved the problem this time, it seems pretty sensible to me to recover some costs

Thank you! I too have now found a few rebutal articles and feel a bit better. Even if I got a refund, that felt like my phone was taken away to be sold to someone else to enjoy while I have to put up with my dated Note4 (but I won't for too long, life is too short to be dealing with freezes, reboots etc).

Naturally, not disputing that. This is early days but at least e-mail everyone who returned the phone and offer them a handset too.

Maybe Samsung customers could be contact directly but I wouldn't trust car phone warehouse to catch pneumonia in the artic let along follow up to note 7 customers lol
