Can you charge and use OTG/data transfer simultaneously on the Pixel XL? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I've tried this in the past with micro USB devices, it wouldn't work and I was told it couldn't. I know that you can do this with computers that are equipped with type C but I cant find any info about doing this with type C phones. Please help! This feature would be extremely useful to me but I don't want to buy a powered USB hub and then find out it doesn't work and end up wasting time and money.

I imagine it should be possible as long as your dongle supports pass through charging. My Pixel C and LG G5 both support data from a flash drive and charging at the same time.

I'm excited to see if it really works too. From what i read, the crucial spec is that the charger, hub, and phone all support USB-C PD (power delivery). I bought the Pluggable brand hub Google's Benson suggested to me on Google+.
Edit. I linked them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=69031534

Did that hub work on the Pixel XL? I would also like to charge my phone while casting it's screen with an attached dongle via usb for a remote. This way I can watch things like amazon video on my chromecast via my phone screen. I tried it on my Nexus 6P and could never get it to work.

Yes, the hub works to charge and connect a usb sound card at the same time on my pixel xl. I don't think the 6p had full USBC-pd support like the pixel added.

Thanks, I returned my Pixel XL after a few days even though I thought the phone was great. I just couldn't deal with the smaller screen and the single bottom speaker after being spoiled by the 6P. Good to know that it works since my wife will be getting one. She's not as picky as I am. Just to confirm, is this the usb-c hub you used? https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Sup...01D401PYW/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

No USB cable? Seriously?

So, I just picked up a Pixel C to replace my Nexus 10, using the developer discount, and I'm really annoyed that I can't get started rooting it yet as I have no way to connect it to my computer. If you're going to put out a device that uses a brand new connector standard, the least you can do is include a cable for those who haven't owned any usb-c devices before. I wouldn't even have minded a straight usb-c to usb-c cable, as unlike most, I actually have a couple usb-c ports on the new PC I recently built. But instead all I get is a dedicated charging cable. Who the hell makes dedicated charging cables anymore???

I can definitely see where you're coming from. You would think with as much as they charge for the C, they could at least throw in a short cable. Fortunately, I have a 6P, which came with a (very short) data cable. I remember people were upset when they found out the 5X didn't come with a data cable either.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure you check out Benson Leung's profile on Amazon to see which Type C cables are within proper specs: http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A25GROL6KJV3QG/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp
He even fried his Chromebook Pixel while testing a cable that was not within proper specs. So I would definitely recommend getting one he has positively reviewed.
I personally bought this one he reviewed: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010VFFU1W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00
Haven't had any issues with using it on my 6P thus far. Luckily, the prices of these cables have dropped since more companies are making them.
I was annoyed that it didn't have one in the box when I opened it yesterday (I just wanted to unlock the bootloader to get that out of the way), until I remembered I could use the one from my Nexus 6p, albeit very short. Well after one PC refused to even turn on, I tried the other older one and after getting the SDK tools installed, it wouldn't recognize the Pixel in ADB or Fastboot so I gave up and just joined the N beta.
The captive cable is annoying as well. I have the OEM charger that shipped with my 6p, and purchased the 2 port charger from Google before Benson started reviewing 3rd party items on Amazon (I wanted to be sure it would work and not damage anything so I went straight to Google). I actually haven't purchased a charger for work (really don't need to charge my phone at work, just have a charger in the bedroom, living room and car) but I have the Pixel charger here at work now. I was thinking it would be nice if it wasn't a captive cable because then I could charge my phone from my tablet with a double ended USB C cable. Still an option with the cables I have at home, but it would have been nice.

+1 for this cable. I got it to use in my car as a charger due to the length and the braided cover. I haven't used it for data transfer/flashing but it's a very good cable and has the same satisfying click as the OEM cable that came with my 6p.
I agree. I too was disappointed that a cable was not included.
Yeah that caught me off guard. You'd think they'd be trying to get as many C cables out there as possible. Every microUSB product comes with a cable even though most people have dozens, but then they dont ship one with a brand new standard...that's shocking.
Hey, you guys are asking a bit much for only $500 +
Yea it does suck but I grabbed and adapter and a cable off of amazon for like $5-10 each, they were here in a few days.

I should have read this thread before I bought a USB cable. Luckily the force was with me and I chose the one you recommended anyway. Arriving today. :good::good::good::good:
Am totally with you on this. I mean for the past x amount of years you have been supplied with charger which doubles as a data cable. This is probably the first device I have owned where you have a dedicated charger.
Also, as a so called development device, I am really surprised they didn't include the usual charger / data cable set up.
This is my first USB-C device, so that makes it an even bigger pain. I am sure things will change over the years, but for the time being its going to be a case of picking up overpriced USB-C data cables / mirco-usb adapters, etc.

USB v3.1, Type-C 1.0 - Does it mean data, or tv out, and charge at same time?

I'm a little confused. I thought usb C would bring a bunch of functionality standard USB cannot. Functions such as the ability to HDMI/TV Out and charge at the same time and data and charge at the same time are awesome. We saw it with the Lumia phones but I have not seen mention of it with the new HTC 10.
Is it possible the HTC 10 can function similarly to the Lumia's and HDMI/TV Out and charge and or data and charge at the same time?
I guess I answered my own question. Lisa from mobiletechreview did a smackdown against the Galaxy s7 and she mentioned the Lumia dock works fine with the HTC 10. She was able to connect peripherals, hard drives, mirror the screen, and charge at the same time. This is awesome! and has me strongly considering switching from my LG V10 to the HTC 10. Surprised nobody is mentioning it given the hype of the Lumia functionality. The HTC 10 can be the first strong go at an android phone being used as a real desktop replacement. Now just need the right apps. I wish full chrome could run on android then this could be a chromebook/desktop replacement.

You'd think they'd be marketing that feature to stand out some more. I'm surprised there isn't an official HTC accessory.
Well, the specifications do list Display Port under connectivity so...there you go.

It doesn't hurt to actually read the specifications..

No reason the Display Dock shouldn't work.

Wow. So I'd be able to connect the phone to the lumia dock to a TV via hdmi all while charging it? For me... That'd be a game changer.

Wireless charging adapter blocked?

Maybe a noob question here, but I was hoping to get wireless charging on my 2XL with a Nilken USB-C adapter. Works great on my N6P, but on the Pixel 2XL I get no charge. It registers as charging, but the battery % never goes up, even after an hour+. Is there an obvious reason why? I can't find any info anywhere.
Suggestions on getting wireless charging working?
Can't wirelessly charge a phone with a metal backing
If you really need wireless charging, there are USB-C pads that you mount inside a case. Check Amazon

That is my point. I bought a Nilken USB-C wireless charging adapter for my Pixel 2 XL. It works on my Nexus 6P fine, but won't charge my 2XL. Seems weird to me.
This is what I'm using:

My Pixel 2 XL will only charge with my old Pixel XL or the new one that was shipped with the phone. Even my car charger won't charge up the new pixel. I get the charging icon in the display but it always stays at the same charge?
Maybe your in the same boat as I am in?
That it will only charge with the Pixel chargers (old or new)?
Anyone else having this issue??
That link is for the short version. I'd think being the XL you'd want the long version.
That would suck. I need to be able to charge the phone while using it for navigation for long-distance road trips.

That's the exact adapter I used for my Pixel XL and my wife's Pixel. We quit using them because quick charging is sooo much faster.

Wow, that sucks! Ive been using my Samsung charger without any issues, and I double checked my off brand car charger and it was working fine. Charging normal as far as I can tell. If you can't charge with normal chargers, might want to RMA...

I tried charging last night with a standard low amp iPhone charger and I didn't get any charge at all, even though the charge light was on. Seems the Pixel 2 XL wont charge with low amp chargers? I was able to charge on a high amp car charger. Try that maybe?
That's what I thought, thankfully I have 2 pixel chargers now, (1 from my old Pixel XL and the new one)
Another note:
Had to RMA my brand new Pixel 2 XL as phone calls could only be heard from the speaker not the earpiece itself. I thought we had fixed this issue previously when I called into Google Support and we wiped the phone thus fixing the no sound issue but I noticed this past Saturday that it came back!
New phone should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.
Don't think the Pixel 2 launch this year was as smooth as Google would have liked!
It charges me with the turbo charger from the N6 as well as 2 port charger I have in my truck. It just says charging, not slowly or rapidly... The 2 port quick charger was for the N6.
A wireless charging coil that works with this phone would be great. I am somewhat invested into qi technology with the cradle in the truck and the stand on the night stand.

Seems like because the qi adapters are not fast charging, and the Pixel 2 doesn't seem to charge at all with low power chargers, wireless charging might not be an option yet. Inwas hoping too! Awesome to just thrown the phone on the cradle at night and no wires to f with. Maybe another battery case manufacturer will make a battery case with wireless charging again.

I have the same wireless add-on and it used to work brilliantly on my OG Pixel, but you are correct - I can't get it to work with my 2 XL. Like yours, it says "charging" but the percentage doesn't move overnight. Interestingly, I don't think it reduces in power either (I haven't been paying close attention, but I'm pretty sure I've woken up to the same % each morning that I fell asleep to). I will try again tonight.
The short vs long version of the hardware are identical except that one is longer for when it's in a case you can center it on a flat qi base, so that won't make a difference.
Very strange. I do have a fast charging wireless charger on order that I will try when it arrives, but I'm not confident it will solve the problem.
I got this one tonight and it seems to work just fine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074SHBXC5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

my charger looks similar. What powder brick are you using? I have a 3 different 2a wireless charging pads, and have been using the Samsung quick charger and still can't get any juice to my Pixel 2XL. I wonder if a USBC to MicroUSB will make a difference? But I don't see why...
So curious why this doesn't work!

Magnetic Charging

So i have been using 3rd gen NetDot magnetic C usb cables since i had the Pixel. It worked on my Pixel XL, my G5, and my 5x. These still work on my 5x ang g5 (dont have pixel and XL anymore) however it only worked once on my Pixel 2, and stopped at 87%, i tried switching cables and magnet pieces. All pieces work fine in my g5/5x. On the 2 it just says charging and very slowly goes down
Obviously it charges fine with a normal C cable, and a C to C cable.
I did try different power adapters (had extra from my pixels ive had and g5) but with same results
These looked kind of interesting but I had not really looked hard at them until now. So far, it appears that none support quick charge via them however, which would eliminate it as an option for me.
Actually the brand MAGNITTO apparently does. Might give it a try. Although 3ft is kinda short. All of the cables I use are 6ft.

Charges 5x/g5/XL quick, i dont care to use the speedy quick charge on the 2.
On a side note, yesterday evening i used the C to A adapter, and used the magnetic on the charger included with the 2
Now its working again lol.
So i can charge it on my standard 3a charger now with the magnet again.
I joked with a friend, said there must have been something stuck in the wire, and the bigger 2 charger pushed it through lol
Odd, I'm having similar issues. Magnitto magnetic charging system worked very well with Samsung Galaxy S6. Switched to Pixel 2 XL on Nov 13th and it continued to work well using the USB-C connectors until Nov 23. I removed the connector that a.m., went to visit relatives and used the Google OEM stuff to charge while there, came back and the Magnitto system no longer works. I got a replacement (in case it was a faulty USB-C connector) and still no joy across multiple cables etc. Did Google do a software update to prevent magnetic chargers from passing power through? This doesn't make sense.
PD
I've been using different ASAP cables with different phones Nexus6/Samsung S3 and Pixel 2 XL.
You will get charging with most of the magnetic cables on the market. The problem is when you come across Power Delivery. You will never see a cable that support Power Delivery that is USB-C to USB-A cable. It needs a USB-C to USB-C because the wire pattern is pretty specific to be able to support Power Delivery.
You CAN'T have a USB-A at one of the ends AND support Power Delevery AND Data Transfer AND QuickCharge 3.0
That said. The only magnetic cable that works on a device that uses Power Delivery at my knowledge is the ASAP MagX Cable. The bad point about this is if you want to work with your Power Delevery technologie and use magnetic cables. It's the only option AND you can't go back to their regular magnetic cables unless you change the tip. So it's one or the other: if you use Magnetic Cables AND you want to use your Power Delivery (fast charging) technologie go for MagX, if you want more flexibility across devices, chargers and that you data transfer often ... go with a regular ASAP or WSKEN
You can still use their regular cables/tips but you will never use Power Delivery. You can transfer data and ''regular'' charge your phone. Also note that the regular tips (wired the same way as everyone else that uses mag cables beside the MagX) will still work good and make use of the Power iQ technologie that ''kinda fast charge'' your device depending of the power of your charger.

Pixel 2 XL Charging Cable

Hey y'all, so I got my Pixel 2 XL about 2 months ago. Just today though, my charging cable (Type c - Type c) isn't working anymore. What's weird though is that it seems to work but either a hit or miss with my sister's OG Pixel wall outlet and when I try mines, it doesn't work at all but if I use her cable on my wall outlet, it works fine? Pretty much her cable works on both but mines would only work on hers but sometimes. I'm kind of hoping I could contact Google and have them send me a new one. What are your thoughts? Should I contact them about it and see if I'm lucky enough to have them send over a cable. If not, would someone help suggesting an aftermarket charger that works fine with these phones. I've been on Amazon but hesitate on getting some due to mixed reviews. I hate how these chargers are becoming more strict in requirements.
