issues since update to Android 7 - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Just seeing if anybody else has been experiencing any issues since the update to Android 7
Some of the issues I've seen.
1. When trying to update apps and I load another app, the play store will freeze (notification screen will say play store is not responding)
2. When I have multiple apps open, the recent apps button seems to hit or miss if it actually wants too display anything
3. When using the facebook app and I press the recent apps button, I get the split screen, but the face book news feed goes blank

1) tried a few times, no freeze
2) works like a charm here, 30+ open apps, task switcher is instantly there & double tap to quick switch between apps is working flawlessly..
3) cant test, no facebook account
Cheers

No issues here. Thing has been smooth.
Facebook even works fine in split screen

No issues noted on my end, Facebook shows up normally, although it does give the warning that it may not work properly in split screen.

For point 1, try sideloading the latest Play Store and Google Play Services APKs.
For points 2 and 3, these seem like they might be Nougat issues, and not HTC 10 issues. Try a google search and see if you find anything.

No issues at all either. Ran perfect the few days I had it in my phone.

I've been having a few issues since the update too. The stock weather clock doesn't seem to work on apex launcher. Haven't tried it on any other launcher yet, but it works fine on the sense launcher. I also haven't been getting notifications right away for gmail and some other apps. It might be some overly aggressive power saving. I noticed those particular apps are completely closed and gone from the recent apps drawer after a while and I get the notifications when I open them manually. Going to try turn off power saver for a day and see if it does anything

Did you dirty flash? If so then full wipe and avoid restoring apps until you can verify that the rom works as expected..
Let us know how you get on

My concern is signal ,is very bad after update and the download speed is Lower than any other phone ,even Lower than axon 7, I did a speed test in the same spot and axon 7 got double the speed than HTC 10

I too love the m8. A beast. The 10 is a worthy successor. And i personally prefer it more to the other flagships as well. The only ups are that it has a fingerprint scanner, way better camera and the high res audio. You won't feel much difference in the perfomance if running normal apps. So if you want these things, go for it else flash CM 14.1 in your M8. I too have flashed cm14.1 and everything has improved.
I hope you have got the answer to your question.

I think so, thanks. I mainly love the smoothness, the sound volume of the speakers and the sound quality of the headphones (my last smartphones were Samsung and they sucked on those departments) on my m8 but I've read that the speakers sound better on a quite ambient (more bassy) and the headphone quality is even better, is that true?
Cheers

The audio coming from the 10 is absolutely terrific. One can also create certain audio profiles and once you get the hang of it, you will be amazed to see the power of this device in the music section.

The m8 is the only phone I didn't own and the one x in the htc flagship line up.. I've had the rest and I've use the two I didn't own.. The 10 at this moment in time is the best phone thet is.. There isn't anything to argue with it.. A change in OS maybe but a better phone, for me there is none.

I had the same exact devices as you and the International One X, and Sprint Evo 4G LTE before those and I am loving everything about the HTC 10! The Nougat update allows you to disable the standing notifications in your notification drawer and a couple of status bar icons. You can also add a few quick toggles and that is Nougat stock...I am going to clean up my SD card and flash ViperROM because I have run it on all of the HTC devices I have owned and it always works great for me!

It's a Sense based ROM but has the BEST and most customization options like status bar brightness slider, horizontal tenable quick toggles, also vertical quick toggles, custom theming, a whole Venom Hub full of add ons and more but it absolutely stays true to Sense...unless it still has the "De-Sense" option in the Aroma installer options

Why does One X stutter?

Hi
In every list that one should drag to scroll down there's always a stutter at first before the list starts to move. How can it be that a device with 4 or 5 cors could behave like this? Just curious

It might be due to the ramping up of the cpu's, and the time before it ramps up. These values can be customized*. Also remember that sense is not the most ui friendly rom(skin). If you are rooted, and tried any of the jb roms, you would know what I'm talking about.

Not rooted on this device because I've had the WiFi problem on 8 devices. Don't dare to void my warranty or risk having to pay for the repair.
Are you saying that jb doesn't have this fenomen? If so I'm really looking forward to it even more.
I'm waiting for s-off then I dare to root.

No, it doesn't, and it's so smooth it's actually scary. At least the aosp builds don't have lag. Whether the Htc version will be the same, remains to be seen.
I have to admit the feeling can't be described. Bad to hear about that 8 devices which all had wifi problems.

Do you have some specific examples? In pulling down menus from Settings and scrolling through them mine doesn't stutter. I think a lot of individual performance issues are based on what apps (and their quality), monitors, analyzers, and tweakers you have running and/or in the background. Tasker is a good example because it's always monitoring the phone for movement or an action even if it's not doing anything. Here's an interesting article about how Android paints the screen. Even eight cores wouldn't make a difference. Maybe JB will change things. FWIW, there are tons of pages of discussions about stuttering issues in the SGS3 forum too. The thing both phones have in common are overlays and tons of OEM apps running in the background.

Man! i honestly thought htc wasn't doing bad on this quad-core phone......... Until i tried the unfinished jelly bean roms. After flashing back to even the test rom, i was really shocked. This is really incredible for a quad core. It stutters so much it's crazy. Even the app drawer lags. I just charged my phone to flash a jelly bean room. HECK, it's not just jelly bean, i was doing fine on ICS CM9 ROM. Is it sense?
As for the wifi problem, that just adds more fuel to the fire for people who buy an htc device for the first time, my first experience with HTC is really not as nice as i would have hoped it would be. Sadly i realized my WIFI problem after rooting. I didn't make a nandroid back up and without an RUU i can't see myself getting back to stock unless someone who is also on the same provider as i am is willing share their nandroid back up with me so i can send it in for repair - not blaming htc on this one...just HOPE I'M NOT CHARGED FOR H/W FAULT that comes from them.
I can wait at the moment to get my wifi repaired. Can't say i am satisfied with the device. One thing that's for certain is it's not the hardware in the phone that's the issue. I can only hope HTC does the right thing when it comes to this device.
HTC Sense is beautiful compared to Jelly bean , that just visually. However the lag that comes with it outweighs the beauty. That's my take on all of this so far. Hope they do the right thing.

Using the stock browser go to the youtube desktop site and scroll around, pinch zoom
If you have a lot of music open the music app go to song view and scroll
use the tapatalk xda app
let the device sleep for a while then immediately open the app draw and scroll around
scroll in the gmail app
Those are some examples of the stutters that annoy me with htc roms, it may be a little nit picky but a quad core device should be able to do all the things listed above with ease.

Were you using the stock ROM and JB the same way? My One X flies after a hard reset but once I load my 97 apps and have my ten syncs running in the background it's noticably slower (but still five times faster than the i9100 it replaced). I got to try out a (S4) SGS3 for a few days. It wasn't any faster than my One X with the same apps and syncs running and I noticed the launcher issue talked about in the thread I posted above. The browser's faster because it's a Samsung strength and HTC weakness. A car accelerates differently with one passenger than it does with five while also towing a trailer.

I don't even have to try this one. HTC's known for their pretty average stock browsers. I keep using it because I use the "read" button a lot. Samsung ditched reflow in the SGS3 to ensure a smoother browsing experience. Users aren't too happy.

Can be either the lack of preparation (has to dump whatever it was going to render and render a new one), which triple buffering solves, or garbage collection being done, which is most commonly manifest as random FPS drops while scrolling through a long list. The first will be fixed in 4.1, the second requires disabling the Dalvik scroll cache.

Best Current Advice for new Fire Phone user? (battery life, reduce heat, carousel)

Just starting out with the Fire Phone, unlocked version being used with T-Mobile.
Found the YouTube instructional video for loading the Google Play Store and got it to work fine after about 27 updates to the phone and store downloaded.
After trying a half dozen different launchers, went back to the stock version as seemed to work the smoothest and couldn't get any others to do what I wanted anyway.
Questions for current users:
1. Phone gets warmer than any phone I've used before. Is this normal?
2. Any way to dock a useful time/date widget and a weather widget on the home screen (or front of the Carousel)?
3. Any way to get rid of or minimize the mostly useless Carousel without using a different launcher? I'd rather see my wallpaper and place a few icons around the screen, then it'd be perfect.
4. If no way to remove the Carousel without using a different launcher, is there a launcher that gives a simple, clean interface and the ability to have your own wallpaper, a date/time and weather widget on home screen, and standard icon and icon folder placement ability? None of the ones I tried gave me that. I find it bizarre that custom wallpaper is not a standard option on every single launcher.
5. Battery life is pretty bad. Walking around for just about two hours yesterday playing Pokemon Go drained my 100% battery entirely. Is that normal?
6. I'm seeing people mention "turning off fancy stuff" and the like in threads here to improve battery life, but cannot find where anyone says what specifically to turn off or how to turn it off...help?
7. Any way to customize the left-hand tilt menu? It is mostly useless links...the "Music" link doesn't even go to Prime Music -- what's up with that? I'd like to customize what gets launched from the links, but it seems impossible.
8. The "swipe up" back button feature is really annoying as it is so picky and just plain doesn't work in some situations and some apps. Any way to improve it?
9. Any way to tell what apps are currently running to close some? My last phone would show the list if you held down the main button, but this phone just brings up a microphone service when I do that.
10. Is Alexa on the Fire Phone a junior version? It can't do anything I ask it and I'm used to Alexa from my Fire TV. I want to do stuff like "Alexa Play Adele" or "Alexa What Time is It?" but it just shows the "I can't do that" text. (On a related point...any way to get the "Okay Google..." talking function?)
11. Is the GPS a bit weak? Maps don't always load, rather annoying.
12. When I'm talking on the phone, I can't figure out how to get the screen to turn on again if I have to enter numbers, change speakerphone, or check something. Others phones just automatically turn on when I take it away from my ear, but the screen just stays off with this one. Is there a button to push to get it turn on again?
My primary uses for the phone are Prime Music, the Camera, and texting, so it is really a great phone for me. With more reliable mapping, better battery life, and a good back button, it'd be an excellent phone despite the other above gripes.
If you can help with any of the above questions, that'd be great. Thanks!
Stock launcher very restrictive you'll need a third party one to have custom options. That's not as easy as it sounds as not all support widgets on fire phone. I use lucid launcher which does. Mine doesn't heat up much, and battery life is the best I've had on a phone. Double click button for running app display.
try install custom rom like MIUI, I am using MIUI in my fire phone and its really fun... apart from few minor bugs like switching camera it's a great rom, boost battery time, heat up problem solved and very fast rom as compare to stock rom.

Unfortunately, if I'm understanding other threads, camera function is iffy for everything except FireOS. Since the most important part of this phone is the camera for me (tied with messaging), it looks like I need to stick to stock on that.
Frustrating though as I really like the look of that MIUI 7 you linked. I wish I had time to give it a shot just to see if the camera is still good enough.
Thanks.

[HELP] Do you recommend updating my phone?

I bought a Galaxy s9, a couple of weeks ago and the next update came:
G900ZHU2ARE6 / G9600OWA2ARE6 / G9600ZCU2ARE6
my question is, is it advisable to update it? or I wait for Android P?
Currently I have the G9600ZHU1ARBG version
Of course update it

Just curious, but why do you think it's not ok to update. I've seen very few if any problems with an official update.
I just did the update and I regret it so much. First of all, dozens of my apps don't work anymore. Most noticeably - Swipe Keyboard and Coinbase Wallet. Besides that, I can't apply custom themes from themeGalaxy anymore because the demo themes are limited to 10 minutes of use now. Good Lock refuses to work as well and I hate the new Quick settings and task window. Also getting random crashes on every other app now. My phone is entirely stock and not rooted. All in all, awful experience for me.

That was my initial thought. Luckily I managed to fix the app crashing issue (my custom launcher design was at fault). However, I had to revert to the standard theme and I'm not a fan of the new non-customizable task changer and notification bar. I'll learn to live with those, I guess. It's pointless to stay at an older Android version for such minor reasons.

Overall it is a huge upgrade over Oreo, few changes to adjust to but as is the way with updates, personally I prefer the new task changer and so on now, while weirdly when using Goodlock on Oreo I hated that design and always left it as stock

My issues with the task changer are the fact that you can't swipe the apps down anymore (it now opens them instead of dismissing) and the inability of leaving the task changer by simply tapping the background. It just disrupts my "workflow" and I'm getting annoyed by it every single time. Oh, and I'm always locking my chat apps but now the unlock button is in the lower right corner of the app card, which is where my thumb usually sits when I scroll through - I'm constantly unlocking the app instead of switching to it.
But I'll get used to it, I guess.

I don't lock chat apps, and if I am closing recents, I just close them all using the "Close All" button anyway so that doesn't really bother me, just took a bit of time to get used to swiping side to side instead of up and down to scroll through them, but while I was running one of the beta's of Pie the close all button was missing so I got used to swiping up to close them anyway, like you say you adjust over time

That's my problem. Swiping up and down seems normal and about half the time I swipe up and close the app window. I believe someone suggested it and it got the standard canned response.

Can say the same here, feels sluggish. I updated it to Pie after hearing great stuff from others.
I'll see if clearing app data of most apps makes any difference.
On the official beta I'm not seeing any sluggishness at all but I do see others on it complaining about it.

Just bought one

Must say I am quite impressed with the View 20. Have been using the Pixel 2XL for the last 13 months so was quite apprehensive about switching phones, and there are certainly things I will miss from the Pixel ie dual front fitting speakers, Now Playing and monthly updates.
I find the screen on the View 20 to be very crisp, at least to my old eyes, in fact I find it to clearer than the Pixel. The camera is very good, though I need to play with the settings to probably get the most out of it. RAM management seems very good.
Notification light is tiny, and you need to be looking at the screen head on to see it.
FPS is very quick, and has worked 100%, though I must say most of the time I don't get a chance to use it as the facial recognition is so quick.
Am using gestures for navigating, very smooth, at least with the stock Launcher, not so much when using Nova. Whilst they work, swiping up to go Home always briefly brings up the multitasking screen before doing what it should. The one annoying thing is you have to be pretty accurate when typing on keyboard at the edges as very easy to end up swiping left or right which takes you Back.
There does seem to be one bug I have found so far, and that is when switching apps, if you tap on the app that is to the side of the screen, rather than opening it, it drops you back to Home screen.
Only other thing I can think of at this moment is I can't get any notification badge on Gmail, either on stock Launcher or Nova (and all settings are correct)
If anyone has any questions or anything you want me to try, i will do my best to help.

The international version launched only 5 days ago. Did you get a hold of one and if so, can you share where from and what price so it benefits the users here. I am considering purchasing one via a friend (who is flying) from China but he is unable to find the international version there. I am wondering if Google Playstore and subsequently Nova Launcher can be installed on the Chinese version.
It was the international version, purchases in UK from carphone warehouse. 8GB/256GB. On their website at £579.99. They charged me £549.99
Also comes with a free Honor watch (via claim)

Agreed with the OP. Just got the same 128 gig unlocked, a couple of days ago. Coming from an S8 over the last 14 months. Must say the V20 is an awesome device.
Using the stock launcher with gestures. As the OP said, Nova does not seem to work as smoothly with gestures which is a shame. However the stock launcher with app drawer turned on is very good. Only annoying thing is I can't seem to get rid of the hi search which activated whenever you swipe down on any of the home screens. I never use it but can't find a way to turn it off! Any advice welcome!
Anyway the display, design, price point, battery life, are very good value for money. RAM management also very good. Very impressed and would highly recommend to others looking for a good deal.
To the OP: I've not had any issues with Gmail. Might be a software bug. Try clearing cache and resetting it maybe. Return to default settings.
Thanks mate, will try that. Can you confirm the issue with the multi tasking page. When clicking on any app that isn't centre page, it drops you back to home screen?

4k uhd is max. Mine are all available. Sounds like you may have some bugs. Best do a factory reset maybe?

Turned it off and on, that did the job. What about under the setting for resolution, there is AI zoom? Is yours greyed out?

Stock launcher gestures are definitely better than either Nova or Action Launcher (especially related to the minimizing app/multitasking screen issue - it's a shame that you can't modify the icon settings more than 5 x 6 to make the stock launcher icons smaller. They just seem unusually large to me coming from my Pixel 2 XL. Action Launcher is a good resolution for now (minus that multitasking screen swipe up).
Does your notification LED work either when the device is plugged in or when you receive a phone call/email?
I just received my version from the UK and no LED notification light ever comes on.
Yes, notification light works, but very rarely notice it as its so small

It's just small but it's there.

You need to download Magic AR app from Huawei app gallery to use that dancing trick with TOF Camera.
Oh, so the multitasking issue is connected with 3rd party launchers. Good to know. I was using Nova launcher and had this issue.
The notification light is working, but it's small, not very bright and ideally you would have to look at it dead straight or from the top of the phone.
I have other issue though: can't get Netflix to play in HD. This phone's Kirin 980 is officially supported by Netflix, but I don't get HD badge next to the titles unfortunately. Other user mentioned that it works, but not for me...
has anyone managed to restore saved wifi passwords? I used the phone clone which copied all my apps/contacts/sms (did not include app data which was a bummer) but I cannot restore all my saved wifi passwords even after loading my google account, my old phone is set to back them up to google account, but this phone wont restore them. My old phone is rooted so I can see the passwords but I have hundreds and don't wan tot do it manually

Color Os Sucks

First I thought why people hate on this os, I can deal with it, I love stock android but I have also used miui in the past so color os should be fine, but thinking that was a big mistake.
It doesn't support basic android 9 pie features like swipping right to clear banner notifications, a screen on time chart (leave alone digital wellbeing), dark mode of atleast some sort (all flashy white colours, cannot even take the amoled's advantage) and many more. Even a redmi phone with android 6 or 7 with miui 10 has all android 9 features and here's color os lacking even at the basics.
And even its own features are incompliant. You can only create dual apps for select 2-3 apps, unlike in miui where you could clone any app. Also what is this thing with the call menu when you receive a call, its of 2 kinds, one in which you have to swipe up/down to take/end a call and other being you just have to click the call pick/end button. They need to show their customisation skills there, wow.
And though the phone supports L1 liscence and has a hdr capable display it still doesn't support hdr content on netflix or amazon prime. Their answer to that is an osie vision effect feature in settings>display>osie vision effect, which btw to use you have to also enable smart slidebar(in convinience aid) and then go the supported app>pull out smart slidebar and then enable osie effect. All this then only to see that it says 'not supported in current app'.
Now the main reason for my frustration being not able to download files when the phone is locked. I put anything on download, may it be a video in youtube app or a file in chrome or any download manager app, it downloads only till 1-2 mins after the phone is locked. I come after an hour or so and the download is stuck there. How can one not be frustrated then.
So conclusion is to hell with color os, just waiting for a stable custom rom(pixel experience rom for that matter).

Yeah I know few development for this os in the process. For sot I use actiondash. Substratum works mostly on stock android so no use trying them. And yes about the background downloading I tried locking the apps, turning off battery optimizations for them but didn't try turning off sleep mode, will do. Thanks.

I guess so too. Because they don't have much time to deeply modify the OS.
I'm facing a weird issue on my Realme X. After updating an app on Play Store, I don't see "app updated" confirmation on notification panel. I need to open Play store to check if the app is updated or not. My play store version is 17.8.14. All other notification working like when an update is available, when I install a new app etc. Only I don't get notification confirmation after updating an existing app.

Clear data of play store & play services, reboot and let those update itself, then update your apps. Also check for if any specific notification is disabled for play store.

This doesn't help. I know all these workarounds and tried already. I have created a post on Google Community and it seems like most people are facing this bug starting from 17.8.14 update. And after 17.9.17 update, it's even worse. There is no notification from Play Store whatsoever (no notification when an update is available, when an update is completed, when a new app is installed successfully). Google has screwed the notification function on Play Store.
