Only one speaker working on ringtone - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Has anyone solved the issue of having only the bottom speaker working for notifications, alarms, and ring tones? Or is this a defect and I should return my phone? Please let me know if you have this issue or not and if there is any known solution. May have to switch phones if I can't even hear the damn thing ring

It's common to all HTC 10 phones. All notifications are played through the bottom speaker only. No fix is there for it AFAIK. It's a 'feature' apparently.

Just tested mine. Alarm and ringtone (in real situation, not in the settings selection) play through both speakers, no doubt about that. Weird.
(Alarm sound: polychrome. Ringtone sound: Watson from HTC themes)

Is yours unlocked or a carrier version? What software are you running?

What device and software do you have? It seems that some fo have the issue and others don't. Trying to find any rhyme or reason to it

Mine is unlocked, completely stock, 2PS6200 Europe version. Tested again just now, both speakers are playing notifications.

Very interesting. Mine is unlocked as well but US version, 2PS6500. I'd be VERY interested to hear if people with the exact same version have different behavior

I've got T-mobile branded european HTC 10 and also both my speakers play all the sounds.

I have the 2PS6500, US unlocked version. No sound from top speaker with ringtone, notifications, or alarms.

So it seems like so far we have the following results
Unlocked Euro version (2PS6200) Stock software rings through both speakers
T-mobile branded Euro version rings through both speakers
Me and one other confirm that US Unlocked version (2PS6500) Does NOT ring through both speakers.
Curious if anyone with US Unlocked version has flashed another ROM and had it work or not work.

Both speakers ringing on another 2PS6200 too, but this time a friend's Hong Kong version (708 software), stock unbranded.

So I have an unlocked European version. And I checked again after reading the responses in this thread. What seems to be happening is that the sound plays out of the bottom speaker but the top speaker does seem to get activated but produces no sound. I hear a soft static noise if I put the top speaker next to my ear when a notification comes through. Could someone else with bottom speaker only notification sounds check for similar behaviour?

Yep, that's exactly what is happening. There is no audio produced from the top speaker during incoming calls, notifications, or alarms... But you can hear a soft white noise from the top speaker if you put your ear next to it as if you were on a call.

Huh. That's pretty strange. I doubt it's a physical defect in the device as music, media and notification sounds (when you listen to them while selecting them, not when a notification comes through) play fine through the top speaker. It makes no sense at all. What's even stranger is that some users are reporting that their notifications play fine through both speakers. Maybe if someone who is S offed could flash roms from both regions and check if the top speaker works with one and not the other we could get to the bottom of this.

Have the same issue on us stock unbranded phone. Was hoping that nought update would fix this but no luck. I have a coworker with T-mobile HTC 10 who swore up and down that his was OK until I actually showed him what to look for. He was testing while selecting a ring tone. I called HTC they offered to send me a new phone but I know that will not fix it. They will not admit it's a bug. I keep missing calls because of this.

I too doubt it is a physical defect.
I was specifically referring to the incoming ringtone when receiving a call. The audio during a call from the top speaker functions as expected... As does audio from apps playing music, audio from apps playing movies, audio from games, etc... All function fine.
Specifically the incoming ringtone of a call, incoming notification, or an alarm produces no audio from the top speaker (a very low, soft white noise hiss can only be heard) is what I was describing. So, we are describing the same issues at hand

I think the easiest way to pin down what is happening would be for someone to flash different stock software from different regions and see if that changes the behavior. My guess is that it is software related

I have the same issue on the Sprint htc 10.. been this way since i purchased the phone on the release date.
running viper10 3.5 currently.. latest firmware for sprint.
would be great to find out what the cause of this is. its really annoying

Well, I was hoping the latest OTA 2.41.617.3 would "enable" the top speaker to be used in tandem with the bottom speaker for incoming calls, incoming notifications, and alarms... But alas, the "feature", or bug (depending on your perspective of it) persist.
Just a side comparison of the 10's audio output during calls, notifications, and alarms is a complete joke next to the M9, M8, and M7.
Anyone else have different results with the OTA?

Sorry dude, both my speakers rang before the OTA, both still do after... It must be a hardware difference.

With headphones can I have the phone muted?

OK
When I have my headphones in I want to be able to hear a new email come in and if it rings, so have the phone on a loud setting.
Trouble is, this also makes the phone be loud and disturbs people around me with it blasting out of the speaker.
Can the phone be made quiet and still have it all through the headphones?
Ta
I don't know what is different on your side, but when a notification comes through while I have my headphones on and listening to music, the music dims, notification goes on and music goes back to normal. With an incoming call the music dims the same and the ringtone also plays through the headphones. When the call is finished, you just go on with the music.

Yep. Tried it with physically connecting and via bluetooth and both times get the icon and both times plays through phone and headset.
Can anyone test theirs to make sure is not just me ...... Or if its Mr and I'm doing something wrong.

if you are using the headphones supplied from htc then i am not sure, if you are plugging in standard headphones direct then read this thread had similar problems and solved it with a £1.00 cable,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667240
It also does this when connected with bluetooth which has no connection to the socket.
Does yours mute the phone?
No one has actually said if this happens to them or not yet.
My phone doesn't mute the external speaker when the original headphone jack is connected either.
I would have thought this is quitea big flaw. Who wants to hear the phone when you gave your headphones in?
AlsoI find it odd thatI haven't seen many people talking about the same issue.
It must be something that you have installed on the phone, I actually had a few bugs here and there with the phone in the beginning until i done a factory wipe on it and started again I was having a problem with the music player only playing until the screen timed out then stopping the music giving me a minute of music. never did solve it, reset the device and its never happened again.
Basically when i play music on mine it it will play through the speaker on the phone, then when i plug in the headphones it will play through the headphones muting the phone, in point of fact i cannot get it to play through the headphones and the onphone speaker at the same time at all. Then when the phone rings the ringing will be heard in my headphones and also it will sound on the phone at the same time turning my music down at the same time. then once the call is finished the music resumes automatically.
Either your phone is playing silly beggars like mine did in the beginning or you have an app installed that is causing the problems. if you reset it back to default and the problem still occurs then you may have a faulty handset.
Sorry I'm not quite sure I made myself clear.
If I have my headphones inI don't want anything to come from the phone speaker. Something that doesn't happen. I get the ringing and all notifications through my headphones aswell as the phone.
Why would you want the phone to blast out when someone calls out every time you get a text or email if you have headphones on? I'm glad I don't commute.
my phone's external speaker makes no noise with headphones attached..

So is that with official headset?
Can you then hear the notifications and ringing through your headset and the phone silent?
Is your profile on " normal" ?

yes i can hear notifications through the headphones.. like when a text etc comes through

Ta.
It would appear that I have a dodgy handset then.
As I did a factory reset just now.
I've tried with various headsets wired and Bluetooth and can't get it to be silent with headphones attached.
I'm going down to cpw tomorrow to sort it.

And so Michael it would appear that from what haggisuk99 is saying above, he too had a dodgy handset aswell as ragwo
Anyone else able to have headphones connected, have someone ring them and the ringing ONLY be heard in the headphones NOT from the phone ?

I don't believe I have a dodgy headphone socket as I have never had any issues with my headPHONES when using them with the Desire.
But I also confirm that the Ringtone plays in both the headPHONE and through the speaker, i.e. the speaker is not muted as it was on my previous WinMo phone Touch Pro/Raphael.
Now whether this is by design or a bug is the real question. I couldn't believe this is by design, but you never know!
I doubt its the headphone socket, something to do with software possibly ?
Ive got a mate to test his aswell, results to come later.
So now, that's 4 in this thread with the same issue.
And if i dont hear anything later, i will go into CPW tomorrow to try their stock ones.
I wrote to htc with my problem and got this reply. To be fair it only took 3 days for a reply.
Not sure they got it completely as I'm more interested in notifications playing out more than ringing.
If you agree with me please email HTC.

Hi
Thank you for contacting us. In respect of the query that you have raised regarding the functionality of the HTC Desire speaker when using headphones, we must advise you that this is the correct operation of the device by design. Most customers would find it inconvenient and uncomfortable to have notifications and ringtones coming through their headset when they are listening to music (which is the primary purpose of connecting the headphones). Also, it is considered that when you are in a quiet environment, it is not useful to be able to hear the phone ring as you would not be able to talk. It is recommended therefore that you set your phone to vibrate mode. Although we greatly appreciate your suggestions and will pass these on to our software development team, for the above reasons it is highly unlikely that this functionality will be changed. If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Kind Regards

Notification sound "fading in" effect

Hello xda,
Any time I receive a text or mail the notification sound starts low but quickly ramps up in volume. Is anyone experiencing this as well? Is there a way to set this so it's loud from the start? Hope that makes sense.
I appreciate your help and time
I noticed when the phone rings sounds only by the lower speaker, and sound very low and muffled.

Many others (including myself) have noticed and posted about this issue here (though not enough in my opinion). It's not restricted to notifications and ringtones either, it happens with *all* sounds on the phone.
Unfortunately, there is no way to fix it. Different sound drivers, updated firmware, build.prop settings... Nothing seems to get rid of this "speaker protection" crap. I am still hopeful to someday see a mod or firmware update that addresses it though, because after trying all those different things, I've run out of ideas.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've also noticed that, it sounds fine when I preview notifications and ringtones, but when the phone actually rings it is a lot more quiet and muted. It does appear that the top speaker is not being used for ringtones. I'll try to call htc, let's see what they say.
Called HTC, spoke with a girl who sounded like she was following some sort of flowchart. Needless to say she couldn't help and concluded that it was a defective hardware. I tried to explain that others are having the same issue and it appears to be a bug, but I don't think she understood. They are sending me a new phone. I'm sure the new phone will have the same issue. Maybe if more people call HTC with this issue, they will figure it out.

Hi there
the same problem here, without any mod, crack o root solution. But the difference were the answer from HTC technical support: " this is a technical and engineering design, it´s not a bug", this mean: " f**** you costumer, and again, a new dissapoint from HTC. I has tried in several forums, here in XDA and another ones: nothing for to do, i loose my faith in the HTC 10. OH, so they know about it? This is a technical and engineering design fu**-up. My notifications are half the volume of the M8. If that is their answer, then I will probably return my phone.
Any solutions yet?
On mine it rings from the bottom speaker for about 3 rings, quiet, then ramps up and uses the top speaker too. With V4a on now once the top speaker kicks in it's very loud. It gives me a chance to answer it before it blasts me out.
I just bought a new htc 10 and quickly noticed this annoying sound fading in issue, searched online and this seems to be the only place talked about it with no solution, does everybody else really okay with this??
I guess at least it sounded fine when using headphone, but with this speaker fading crap everything sound like its echoing right now. This NEEDS to get solved.
Any solution ?
I came here to search for any ways to turn this "feature" off (and that's what it is, despite how nobody asked for it or wanted it). Looks like nobody has found any solutions. But here's my theory anyway:
The "fading in" volume effect must be a function of the Boom Sound software. It's a noise gate. And it sucks. For instance, try listening to any music that has any hard hits around any silence (a good example is "Brain Stew" by Green Day). It's really annoying.
I wish somebody could figure out how to disable the Boom Sound software altogether.
According to Google, https://www.google.com/search?newwi...0i22i30k1j33i22i29i30k1j33i21k1.0.leWX0kmgR6I it's a known Feature of Android 5, and many people complain about it, but there is no way to disable it.
Some people can workaround the issue, on some rom, with some apps or players; there is no universal solution.
In the best case, some chat app will not bell if they are already full screen; and this is an issue for me because if I have my phone plugged, and display timeout is 1h, then, it won't bell for incoming messages, and if I am >1m from it, I won't know people are talking to me. That's why I try to always make all apps always bell. But, if I am listening to music, the permanent bell that comes with intense chat may turn the music off all the time.
I not sure if I shall downgrade my phone to Android 4, 2.2, or 1.8 ...
.. arg, I am stupid, those versions have never been ported for my most recent phone.

Barely hear ringtones and notifications

Are all these phones quite or is it just mine? Alarms are quiet, can barely hear ringtones and notifications. Vibration is weak as well, which causes me to miss calls while in pocket. Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. But my HTC ,10 had loud ringtones and mortifications.

Might try that.
Agreed, the external speaker volume is dismal at best. I could not even hear the phone ear piece until I flashed Elemental X which allows for ear piece gain... However no gain for external speakers yet.
i have recently had this problem as well. get it replaced. theyll send you a new one overnight if you got one through verizon. mines would be loud initially but after a while it was quite.
My problem is that there is one volume slider for both the ringtone and notification sounds. This is quite limiting (I feel like this was not linked in earlier versions so either they are taking features away or are simplifying things).
Does anyone have any magic tools to un-link these volumes so I can make my ringtone max and notification volume at 50%?

No, that is how stock android is. Other devices, like a Samsung may seperate them. But google leaves them linked by default.
As far as changing that... I really don't know. I leave my phone on vibrate all the time because I have a smart watch that vibrates on my wrists and I can check messages without even taking phone out of pocket.

Yes. I had an issue where if you continuously press the home button it would start out as a decent volume and then decrease. But when any type of audio would play it was super low.

I found a solution to this problem... Volume Butler! It's great, and does exactly what I need it to do (without even buying the "pro" version).

My sounds were all too low for me, i downloaded some iPhone MSG / alarm sounds as well as a Air horn sound and all those sound that i downloaded are much much louder then the default sounds
for me it seems that its something with the software because the speaker is very loud but, for example i download a song, listen to it and it plays very loud but if i set it as ringtone its very low when my phone rings. i was searching in the settings if there is anything to disable but cant find anything
Vibration power on this phone sucks.
I've had the 32gb and 128gb and they were both the same.
I setup the Moto X Pure 2015 for a friend last week.
I used it a half-day to ensure all was working fine.
And realized how much I really miss a proper vibration out of a phone.
Can't stand missing calls in loud places because I didn't notice the phone vibrate in my pocket.
As for ringtones - there are louder ones out there.
I attached a couple of loud ones in the zip.
I setup a Tasker profile to change to one or the other when I'm at parties or other loud places.

Thank you for posting them. The standard Pixel XL ringtones wouldn't wake up a light sleeper on the loudest setting, and most are tunes are kind of dreamy and sleepy. Its been so annoying finding replacement sounds, I installed Alarmy just to get louder sounds and of course soon after my network log starts spiking like crazy, with Alarmy opening multiple connections to facebook/google/etc sending off my data. Out of the entire Pixel XL forum your post was the only one I could find with links to sounds to download that I can load into the standard clock.
Many many tanks, now can get rid of another 3rd party crapware that slurps data like crazy.

Pixel XL - No sound from speakers

Alright guys, I've got a problem I haven't quite dealt with before:
I've got no sound coming from my "external" phone speakers. The in-ear speaker works fine, and so does the mic. That means I can take phone calls just fine. Listening to Whatsapp voice messages is a challenge because Whatsapp uses the speakers which means the message plays with no sound, that is until I hold the phone to my face and the prox switch tells the app to play through the ear speaker. No YouTube videos or Snapchat sounds.
I looked around the forums and such but didn't find anything. I've checked all the system settings I know to check, but nothing I can find is "muting" the sound. My apps list is fairly standard. Stock rom and kernel, unlocked since day 1 but without even a recovery installed. Basically a factory phone.
What are you guys thinking? I'm happy to try basically anything. Even thinking of slapping a ROM into this beast to see what happens, although I doubt there's too much development going on for a 2yo phone...
Cheers!
Update:
I've got intermittent sound. I haven't opened the phone and have no reason to think water ingress could be the problem, but I can't think of a reason that the speakers would work intermittently. Sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem to me. Anyone else?
It also happened to me except I didn't have any sound coming from both speaker and the earpiece. Not sure what happened though.

Well it only has one speaker. As for the others most likely hardware related.

Weirdly, I'm stuck in unreliable-sound limbo. I get sound most of the time, but speaker sound disappears occasionally with no predictability that I've found. Interestingly, If I mash or smack the bottom of the phone phone screen by the speakers, sometimes sound will come back on briefly or entirely. Weird, huh? Not sure what could be causing a connection problem. Maybe I'll open up the phone eventually and find out.

Notification sounds only coming from one speaker

Title says it all really. For example when i download a notification sound from the Zedge app and previewing it in there, the sound plays on both speakers (earpiece and bottom firing) but when a new SMS or E-mail comes in, that sound is only played through the bottom firing speaker. Anybody else experiencing this? It damn annoying because it's not as loud and I am more likely to miss that notification. Hopefully Google is aware and will fix it.
This was shared on the 3a forum. It seems the Pixel 3/2 have complaints on this topic with only bottom speaker working on calls. Could be on notifications, also?

No. Phone calls are fine. As a matter of fact, they sound fantastic. Probably because VoLTE with this phone works on my carrier. My issue is notifications. The sound when a new SMS, E-mail (via GMail) or Facebook messenger, among others. only comes through the bottom speaker instead than both. Thus they are not as loud as they should be. I am not having the issue in the forum you pointed me to. thanks for trying to help either way =)
Thanks for reporting back. I'll definitely be watching for this but glad to "hear" the call volume is good although I'm probably not going to have HD calling even though my AT&T PP account shows VoLTE is provisioned. Maybe I can test it out when the 3a comes by calling our iPhone SE as no one I call has VoLTE. Can you tell if call volume coming out of the bottom speaker only or both speakers?
