Hey, I actually just discovered this yesterday after months of wondering how to achieve this. I'm on cricket (subsidiary of AT&T) so i assume this should work. Unfortunately, I can't link you directly to where I got this information because I have no clue at this point But this is what I did. Download some app that can edit your build.prop. I use Root Essentials, which you can find on XDA Labs or the Play Store. At the end of your build.prop, add the line:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Save, reboot and I think you should be good, because that's all I did.

Did not work for my, are you on android 6 or 7? because I have seen this method done on 6 but heard there were issues on 7 with this method

I'm on 7.1.1 the latest PixelROM. I remember reading about an additional step after the one I told you, but there were a few comments from people saying that what I told you was all they needed for tethering to work. And that's all I did as well. I'll edit this post to add in the additional step in a bit.

Okay so same ROM as me.
Are these the additional step?
Didn't work for me though, but I also can't tell if the adb commands executed properly, screenshot attached.
. Enable developer mode (Go to Settings -> About phone, and click on the build number until the developer mode is enabled).
2. Enable USB debugging under Settings -> Developer options
3. Connect the device with a USB cable to a computer with the Android SDK platform tools installed
4. Start an adb shell: adb shell
5. In the adb shell, run these commands one by one:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
settings put system tether_entitlement_check_state 0
reboot

I think those were it, I'm guessing it didn't work after you rebooted right?

yeah it did not, still getting the "To enable, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611" But I know I can't just enable it because I have a grandfathered unlimited plan and they won't let you

Yea even though I'm with cricket I got the exact same message. I changed to their unlimited everything plan a few months ago and was disappointed to find out that the plan made me lose tethering But like I said I just found this fix yesterday, no idea why it isn't working for you

I had a similar problem with a dutch provider. I solved this problem by adding ,dun at the apn type.
So APN type was default,dun.
I could not turn on hotspot tethering by the quick access tiles however by settings --> more --> tethering and hotspot --> wifi hotspot it works.
Disabling hotspot mode with the quick access works well.

Try it
Unlock carrier tether permanently, No root required on all ROM types.

Hello guys!
I have a nice news for any people, who using LS980
Several days i was in meditation about using Sprint LS980 in GSM network with native Android features, like Wi-Fi and bluetooth Internet sharing, and ability to chosing preferred GSM network by hand.
So, i did some research and made small tool, which will help you to get things, we have told about in simple steps
Requirement:
You should be on clean ZVG
You should be rooted
You should enable USB debugging
Lets make a freedom!
1. Plug you smartphone to PC
2. Install latest USB drivers
3. Be sure that
Code:
adb devices
command will return you device id
4. Download simfree.7z and unpack it. exe-file absolutely free from any viruses - i made it via BAT2EXE converter
5. Install Insecure adbd http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687590 and enable insecure adbd daemon
6. Run simfree.exe and allow root-right for adbd on your smartphone screen
7. Your phone will reboot
Enjoy!

It works, and contains numerous apn settings to I got data right away.
Unfortunately, it doesn't disable hands free activation, that step must be done manually.
Thanks!
does it let you change apn settings so you can add in new apns?
Awesome!!

You mean ##3282# (##DATA#), yes?
simfreefree
Before running the SIMFREE.EXE you should backup:
- /system/etc/apns-conf.xml -- (stock LS980 ZVG here)
- /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
- /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/carrier (/dev/block/mmcblk0p27) -- (stock LS980 ZVG here)
That is if you want to be able to easily undo the changes.
---
If you are wary of MS-DOS batch files wrapped in EXE files performing mysterious actions and want to handle this yourself:
Install these files:
- apns-conf.xml
- carrier.img
Remove this file:
- /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
---
I wonder if the carrier.img packaged with simfree.exe is copy of the carrier partition of a GSM ZVG G2? For some reason the props patch inside of it has the Sprint props file from the stock carrier.img converted to filenames in their own directory. What is *that* about? Odd.
I'm a bit peeved that someone tosses up an EXE without providing any breakdown of what it actually *does*. At close examination it looks innocuous though, but you do never know.

Perfect tool, works flawless and can see the much needed tethering options can you shed some light as to how to enable the data roaming onto the stock ZVG ROM as the option is missing...
Unlocked a LS980 Bad ESN with this method, doesn't seems to work. Don't know is Bad ESN device block from all carriers in US or Just for Sprint?
After unlocked, put a T-mobile sim in, but no signal bar.
Yataaaa!!!! It Worked, It Worked
wowowow LG G2 LS980 32GB Sprint, after several nights digging and digging on how to unlock on lollipop update, finally u saved my ass. But network bar keeps dropping, it's on and off but at least calls work, and it's not affected.
Those looking for how to configure APN, Just download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.appando.app.changeApn. to get APN settings for data. this will unveil your hidden apn and allow you to configure data settings.
However i can't change Network Type eg. 2G/3G anytime i try to do that via the radio switcher app, it says 'This Application Does Not Work ON This Device. Please does anyone knows how to fix this?

Native Hotspot - Google Pixel/Pixel XL

So over the last few days Chainfire has released his systemless root method for the new Google Pixel devices. My question is has anybody found a way to bypass the subscription check on the device? A post made by jphillips.hd88 outlined the only method that works for me, which involves installing a third party network refresh application, and then while the network is refreshing you quickly turn on tethering and it skips the check. This works, but I want to know if there is any way to unlock the native wifi tethering feature, especially since we have root now. Any ideas?
Did you try adding the no provisioning line to the build prop and using Wi-Fi tether app?
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Yes sir. No good there.
I just made a guide on how to do it, hope it works for you

Unlock bootloader, root, install some sort of file manager with root browsing( I used es file explorer and enabled the root explorer), navigate to /system/build.prop and edit the build.prop by adding this line to the bottom as the very last line " net.tethering.noprovisioning=true " Save the edited build.prop and reboot. This is what worked for me.

The guide was great, but it did not work for me. The device still checks for a subscription. It looks like I'm still stuck using the flaky work around that barley works until we get a custom rom for now.
Basically the line In the build prop is the way to do the wifi hotspot tethering that way you can use your phones internet on other devices that don't have internet. Also make sure to add the other lone written in the guide. It ensures there is no check for the subscription theoretically. If you need help please let me know. I will be also creating a script soon to do all this for you.

It worked for me. I'm not sure why it didn't work in the past. I followed the instructions and it just didn't take. The only thing I can assume is that Root Explorer didn't save the build.prop or I made a typo. Regardless it is all good now. Thank you.

[Guide] How to get your MSL code

Alright so I was bored and started poking around trying to find a way to get the MSL. Well after a couple hours of trail and error, I got it! Here's how.
You will need: ADB, ADB Drivers, and a rooted device.
Plug your phone into your computer.
Run the following (in CMD) :
1: adb shell
2: su
3: am start com.sec.hiddenmenu/.Program_Edit
It should open a menu with your MSL at the bottom. Hope this helped!
I was able to find my MSL this way. I'm guessing this only works if you are rooted?

Edit: yeah, I wasn't sure if it was 100% working. I made a new post after confirming.
Hey guys, I found a way to get the MSL code for your G920p to edit the DATA menu (##3282# in dialer)
Requirements:
* Rooted S6
* ADB Installed + Drivers
* USB Cable
Steps:
Open CMD / Terminal and run the following:
1. adb shell
2. su
3. am start com.sec.hiddenmenu/.Program_Edit
Scroll down to the bottom and you should see "Service Programming Code" this is your MSL.
I hope I helped! If I did, please press the thanks button! I took me awhile to find this! Let me know if you find anything else interesting in this menu.
Also, I wouldn't recommend playing around with the other settings unless you know what you are doing.
thanks,i find my msl using this method
Using idoneapps you can find your msl without rooting. Just downgrade to Lollipop and run the app. Price is roughly $20 to $30 for the app. No avoiding this price unless rooting and using the old idoneapps.

Are you sure? I've downgraded mine to Lollipop from Marshmallow. There's certain updates that are locked because the binary level is lower than what's on your device. AOCF doesn't work. Just try the PD2 update.

The pd2 is for idoneapps you have to talk to the guy and pay him. He might settle for $25 $20.

If the app doesn't give you the msl, you can flash a lower firmware, I'll check which one I have that works and read the log of what the app did after it unlocks your phone. The msl, will more than likely be in the log.
Galaxy S6 Edge + and Note 5 was updated to Nougat. All we're waiting for is the edgeless version of the software to release. Maybe in another week..
what do I put here
Thanks, it worked for me after about three hours of trying to find my MSL or enable tethering, including rooting my phone in the first place. I made an XDA account just to thank you Also, it worked for me typing it in the Terminal emulator on the phone

Hi, in my case I can access the APN and edit them. I CAN NOT access the Hotspot menu to turn on / off (it is hidden, it does not appear in the settings menu). I'm using a SIM from a carrier outside of the USA, everything works fine on the cell phone, except hotspot.
Any idea to help solve the problem. I not ROOT, momentarily I am using PDAnet + as an alternative, I prefer to use the native function, PDAnet + disconnects and changes the SSID every 15 minutes.

Unlocked phone locked to Verizon APN. How can I force my carrier APN, Bluegrass?

I'm not able to use some data services, most importantly MMS. This was an issue on my last phone, also (LG G6.) However, if I inserted an AT&T sim card and added my carriers APN settings, then inserted my carrier sim, the settings would stick. I recall doing this before the Android 10 update on this device (Pixel 2 XL) and it worked, but now nothing seems to.
I've tried rooting the phone as well, unsuccessfully. I've followed a guide here on XDA and the procedure would simply fail, even when all steps were followed meticulously. I'm not new to rooting, so needless to say I got very annoyed because I had to factory reset the device, which was a pain to have to set up again...
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. This isn't isolated to just me, on the Google forums as well as Reddit, many others have this problem. Thanks guys.

I'm not sure what guide you used to root, but Android 10 requires a different root method than what you'd normally use on 9. You should get the 7.4.1 magisk manager apk and install it on your phone then use it to patch a boot image which you'll then flash to your phone with fastboot. Also, make sure you have the latest sdk platform tools, fastboot.
When you tried to add an apn did you got to the three dot for menu under APNs?

I'm not sure what guide you used to root, but Android 10 requires a different root method than what you'd normally use on 9. Hey, thanks so much for replying. This is the root guide I followed.
But the issue I had was "OEM unlocking" was disabled and grayed out. At no point could I toggle it. And that isn't including all the problems I had trying to get ADB to detect my phone while connected to my computer, even with all drivers updated and debugging enabled.
Yes I have tried the menu up top. The only option there is "reset to default"

If oem unlock is greyed out its most likely a Verizon phone and cannot be rooted. Unless something has changed
So, is there no way to edit a locked Verizon APN without root?

You can only edit the APN if you have a GSM SIM inserted such as from AT&T or T-Mobile. Android automatically hides the APN settings when a Verizon SIM is inserted, as Verizon is not a GSM-based carrier and configures the device settings automatically using the network. You need to find out if Bluegrass has AT&T or T-Mobile-compatible SIM cards you can use in the device. Those SIM cards should allow you to edit the APN.
If OEM Unlocking is grayed out, you have a Verizon device and you cannot unlock the bootloader. Using the device on other carriers however is still possible as Verizon does not SIM lock devices.
