Adups spyware included? - UMi Z Guides, News, & Discussion

So, playing around with the phone I saw these packages that reminded me of an article I had read recently. I can't post the link so just google for: kryptowire adups security analysis
Code:
$ adb devices -l
List of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF device usb:3-2 product:UMI_Z model:Z device:UMI Z
$ adb shell pm list packages|grep adups
package:com.adups.fota.sysoper
package:com.adups.fota
Of course trying to disable them without root doesn't work.
Running the following:
Code:
adb shell pm dump com.adups.fota
gets you a pretty scary list of information which I suspect (but haven't confirmed) is being sent out.
EDIT: it would seem that UMi are not affected by this. Google "trustlook adups" for a (better, IMO) technical report.

Honestly, I don't know. I would say probably not, but I am also not sure if I should trust a company (Adups) that has shown no regards for user privacy.
I downloaded and ran the Trustlook test and it came out fine, so maybe I am just being paranoid.

Maybe a release is imminent?

AOSP source
I listed the path to the file.
Is IMM76I tagged as android-4.0.4_r1.2? Also, how do you update a local repository to the latest (ie I just repo sync'ed android-4.0.4_r1.1 this morning)? Thanks.

yes, it is 1.2.
What I do is keep my main source as master, then just repo init. However, it should work the same for you:
Code:
repo init -u https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest -b android-4.0.4_r1.2
repo sync
IMM76I is only real advantageous to GSM users though, keep that in mind.

Are they ever?
Seems like radios only become optimal after a phone has been out for a long time. Thunderbolt was the same.

[R&D]Fire Phone Images

Hello everyone.
I'm SafinWasi. I know I'm new to the Fire Phone forums, but I found something big,so I thought that I should post it here.
It seems that unlike the Kindle Fire Tablet series which used a TI OMAP based chipset, the Fire Phone uses a Qualcomm MSM based chipset. That being said,we should now have access to the Fire OS images for modding.
To those who have root:
Please use the following steps to get the boot and recovery images:
Using ES File Explorer, mount system and "/" path as rw- and navigate to /dev/block/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/ and copy "boot" and "recovery" to sdcard.
Please send the two images to me via PM or post it in this thread so that I may open them up for examining.

A big thanks to @I am M3 for helping me out to find these. And to the Moderators: Please move my thread if it is misplaced.
Thank you.

Thank you once again for getting the ball rolling on this. I had (almost) lost hope!
Absolutely certain root is needed to pull any of the files. I have tried every method possible through ES (e-mail, BT, MMS, copying the file to /sdcard/, etc.)
Another thing I can try is to obtain root on my phone. Someone mentioned towelroot has many different versions floating around, I've only tried the v3 from geohot's site. I'll find some other sources & see if I can't get lucky.

No problem mate. If I can get a recovery working on this thing I can almost certainly port CM. But Amazon still hasn't posted the source code for Fire Phone

Judging by the 35,000 units sold, and not much interest / activity for this phone on XDA, I doubt anyone's requested it. I sent the following email to Amazon which "escalated" my issue, & also sent the email directly to Jeff Bezos. It's a long shot but let's hope it makes some noise. By AOSP guidelines, they are required to release the device's source code.
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) has compliance guidelines for companies which produce & distribute devices containing the Android operating system. The recently released Fire Phone operates on the Fire OS, which is a modified version of Android 4.2 "Jelly Bean".
In order to comply with the AOSP guidelines, Amazon is required to release the source code for the Fire Phone device, which it has not.
Please make the source code available for download.
Thank you.

@Dilbert1959 - Seems your device has root. Please follow @SafinWasi's guide above to pull the requested files.
Since the boot loader is locked, I doubt that custom recoveries would be possible, but SafeStrap is definitely a probability.

If anyone knows of a safe place for me to download old versions of towel root I can try to help with pulling the image. AT&T for some reason can't find my phone on their network so it's basically a paperweight and don't mind trying to help with this. If there are other methods I can try to root let me know as well. I can give them a shot when I have some down time.

I requested the tr.apk from @Dilbert1959 but have not gotten anything yet, however I used Google & tried all versions with no luck. Another thing we're not sure of - if those who have root did so before the 3.5.1 update.

@SafinWasi and all - I posted the APK in a separate thread in this same sub-forum. In retrospect, I should've just posted in this thread.
EDIT: I believe Towelroot will only work on this phone if you haven't updated to 3.5.1. I'm searching for a way to revert my phone to 3.5 to test this. The Amazon AWS site only has the most recent version available for download.
2ND EDIT: @SafinWasi - I found the old 3.5 OS download link in another thread. The file has a *.bin extension and is 1.12GB. We know through the recovery we can "update via ADB" which will prompt you to adb sideload an update file. I'm thinking I'll try this to get back on 3.5 & towelroot it.
Fire OS 3.5 (thanks to @ONYXis) - https://s3.amazonaws.com/fire-phone-updates/update-fire-phone-121_1.0.1_user_101012120.bin
First of all, I take no credit for these images. I received these from @Dilbert1959 who has confirmed root access using towelroot on Fire OS 3.5. I simply compressed the images to an acceptable file size for XDA.
@SafinWasi - Feel free to move these images to the OP.

TWRP Recovery 3.0.2 with decryption fix

In case anyone else is having issues using TWRP with CM 13 encryption, the issue is already fixed in TWRP code, they just haven't released a new build. So I've done my own build off nightly sources.
Hopefully this will help out anyone else who can't get TWRP 3.0.2 to access encrypted /data .

Why don't you submit the fix to the OFFICIAL TWRP thread?

I didn't create the fix myself. It's already in the official TWRP sources. They just haven't released a new build since fixing it. It's also worth noting that the bug is not device specific. If I understand correctly it appears in all MM devices that use hardware encryption.
I didn't post in the official thread because this isn't an official build.

[MAGISK] Debloater for OnePlus Devices running OOS 11

Debloats unnecessary services and apps on your OnePlus devices to give moar free ram and improve battery.
Works both on stable and beta and any device running oos11
Use it. If it affects your daily usage, don't.
New apps and services have been added in this version.
No seperate versions. Since most of the 9 series guys are rooted, they be using the oxygen updater app. The default updater keeps running in bg and hence, has been removed.
If someone wants services like OnePlus account or red cable club, go to apk mirror and install it from there. Or can keep using the previous one.
Do not forget to flash Overlay mount fix from magisk repository else, u might end soft-rebooting your device.
If you like what I do, consider buying me a coffee

Great mod! I used it to get rid of the bloat mostly but directly after installing, AdGuard starts saying it cannot create a VPN connection and my devices firmware might now be compatible. I reflashed stock system.img and it was operational again, however I produced the same result after reflashing the module again. Do I need to reinstall anything to make it work?

Windows 10 Mobile Prerelease Build 16212 WPAKs

Some here may have saw my old post with just MSM8974 cabs, here we have WPAKs for both "16212.1000_rs_xbox" and "16212.1001_rs_iot" branches!
Don't expect some magical build, it's a very cool build to test, but not stable enough for Daily Driving. Also, this does NOT magically make WhatsApp work!
Files:
• 10.0.16212.1000.rs_xbox.170531-1534.7z (4.7GB)
• 10.0.16212.1001.rs_iot.170531-1800.7z (4.7GB)
Download Links:
9.52 GB folder on MEGA
2 files
mega.nz
If you want a simple method of installing this build, please see the guides I have created here, this is recommended.
There are several "Known Issues" with this build, make yourself familiar with them.
For those wanting to manually try, Enable Flight Signing > extract your device log cab > match 16212 cabs against the list of packages in "InstalledPackages.csv" > deploy from 14393 with 2nd June 2017 set as date..
Make sure to NOT flash:
- Microsoft.MICROSOFTPHONEFM.PlatformManifest.EFIESP.cab
- Microsoft.MICROSOFTPHONEFM.PlatformManifest.MainOS.cab
- Microsoft.MICROSOFTPHONEFM.PlatformManifest.UpdateOS.cab
Otherwise you will be stuck with a bootloop or other issues

If you are following the guides linked you won't need to worry which version, but for reference both update tools use rs_xbox iirc
And performance don't expect luxury, as in the known issues page it's not the most stable builds
And you won't be able to mix packages from other builds, it might work between both builds posted here but I'd expect issues if you did
I'm a noob, what's the difference between cabs and WPAK? And Xbox?
I'd love to see this build, stuck on 15063.254.
