Help on bootloop Moto G5 - Moto G5 Questions & Answers

Hi guys I got bootloop in my moto g5. First I got "failed to mount /data", now the phone boots in unlocked warning screen then says "erasing" then reboots and start over again.
Before the procedure my actions was:
- I got OTA update
- inserted a microSD
- unlocked bootloader
- boot on TWRP 3.1.0
- backup to microSD
-install TWRP
as shown by bootloader screen, my model is "cedric XT1672 32GB P5", M8937_8000.122.02.45R CEDRIC_BRAZILDSDS_CUST.
What I don't understand is why TWRP don't restore, as a made a backup before the procedure.
I appreciate if somebody could help me out!

I had the same problem. Wiping /data corrupted my partition table or system partition.
You need to flash the system and / or the partition table via fastboot from the extracted stock rom (see the other thread arround here, make sure you use the right link (cedric, not the potter one)
-> boot to fastboot
fastboot flash system system.sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.sparsechunk.1
...
It should boot normally afterwards, but probably twrp is gone / twrp has no access to your /data again. See the twrp thread, i'm facing the same issue. But at least the phone works again - without root
Greetings,
Chris

-> boot to fastboot
fastboot flash system system.sparsechunk.0

Nexus 5x in google logo. Cannot flash factory image

I wanted t oinstall Cm13 so booted into bootloader and unlocked it.
Then I installed TWRP 2.8.7.2 as my recovery. Then booted into recovery and flashed CM13 of 20/12.
It then started bootlooping the bootanimation. I waited for half an hour. The phone became heated and I switched it off.
I then decided to go back to stock 6.0.1 but I could flash using flash-all.sh. I then decided to flash manually each image and was able to flash boot, cache and recovery. But cannot flash system and vendor. Can someone help me i this.
Can anyone provide a twrp backup that I can use. (I didn't do a backup myself).
Please can someone help. Just bought the phone 2 days back. Please help.

There is no error. When I manually try to flash system or vendor there is the message sending 'vendor' or sending 'system' and gets stuck with that message. waited for almost half an hour and still no change.
When I booted into twrp, it says cannot mount /vendor and /system.
Edit : I use Linux by the way.

well, interesting. i've never experienced problem like you have... have you already tried to do it in windows? or install TWRP v2.8.7.0 and format partitions in that version and then reflash original ROM. but remember, with 2.8.7.0 you wont be able to flash CM13 (at least on my N5X i wasn't....)

Shouldn't you be using the latest twrp 2.8.7.2? Ive had issues flashing roms without using the latest version. You could also have issues with older versions of twrp and encryption. Id suggest wiping data from twrp and then flashing the factory image from bootloader.

Im in the exact same situation and my fastboot is broken. My PC isnt recognizing a device is attached anymore. No system or vendor mount in twrp
I think to be able to really do anything you need to get into bootloader and have fastboot recognize the device. Make sure the files from 6.01 are all correct and you're flashing in the right order. Follow the guide item #8 http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206930 If you can get the system.img and vendor.img flashed and then lock the bootloader it will wipe everything to factory, internal storage included. If you do that you must have stock recovery.img flashed as well. If downloading system.img hangs reboot and try it again.

Why don't you try a different USB port or a different cable. Or even try on a different computer.

Moto G5 automatically boots into TWRP

Hey guys, hello there. I need a little help over here.
The other day I made the mistake to install an OTA on my rooted Moto G5 (dual SIM). I had the stock image, TWRP & unlocked bootloader. Of course it failed to install the OTA, but the weird thing is that it always boots to TWRP recovery. No matter if I choose to reboot completely or to boot to system from the TWRP reboot menu, it always goes back to TWRP.
Tried a few things, but none of them worked. Mainly I remember trying the "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear" and did nothing. I didn't try this solution even though problem looks similar. Mainly I didn't want to have to unlock the bootloader and install recovery all over again.
Later I discovered that if I go to the bootloader and hit START from there, boots into OS. So it is functional.
Anyway, I installed Atomic OS ROM thinking I'll get rid of the problem and gain a custom ROM, and everything works, but the problem stays. If I reboot the phone, I have to do TWRP -> Bootloader -> System in order to get it to the OS.
Anyone has any idea on how to fix it?
I have the same problem, it comes back to recovery all the time and we can tell you about it, some help please

Hi, I've come back, hahaha, I installed resurrection remix 7.1, previous all the wipes and reboot in bootloader I gave start and started, great.
I had this problem trying to install the rom ViperOS. I solved it with one of these steps:
- Boot into Fastboot, select "Start" with volume Keys.
- Flash "boot.img" directly from the zip that is ROM, do this using a PC.
- If you're using stock rom, reflash boot.img
Greetings

Have you tried to boot from Fastboot?
Yes, it works once...
But if I have to restart it (or turn off and start with the power button), the phone boot always in recovery.
It is then necessary to restart fastboot then press "start".

Try do a full reset through fastboot and then try installing whatever you need through fastboot and recovery. Much more reliable han ota installs/updates

Moto G5 boots to TWRP
I have the same issue. But the suggestions posted wouldn't help me. I have the stock ROM and I'm rooted with Magisk using TWRP recovery. I want to keep the stock ROM and don't want to go through the trouble of backing my data again. So, I was wondering if there was any work around. Would flashing the stock ROM, Boot and recovery without deleting user data partition help??

Backing up Gigs of data is a huge pain. Even if I have to copy to my pc. So, just something that's less cumbersome.

Anyone get the stock for 16gb/2gb version?

Honor 7X Oreo Stock Recovery

Hi, I manually updated my honor 7x (BND AL10 INDIAN) to EMUI 8 following the other post in this forum and after that I went on to flash TWRP recovery again from another post "complete_twrp_ramdisk.img" so that I could take full Nand backups and what not. But Here's the problem, When I try to flash the stock recovery back "BND_RECOVERY_NOcheck" which I flashed during upgrading to EMUI 8, it says "size of image is large than target device"
I tried this using boot fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery.img" and also using the TWRP. It doesn't work either way. So I'm basically stuck with TWRP. The reason I want stock recovery is because
1. I can install OTA UPDATES on EMUI 8 (I actually got one)
2. I may want to just be on complete stock like locked bootloader, sock recovery etc...
Could any one help?? Maybe I need the right stock recovery file ?
BTW It's my first post ever so please go easy if I did any mistakes.
Could you share your twrp? Thanks!

"BND_RECOVERY_NOcheck" is nouget stock recovery.
Oreo update replaces all the partitions, including the recovery that you flashed in order to install the update.
The stock recovery can be extracted from "update.app" , the one inside the oreo "updateL22.zip"

you should already have the update.zip.
use same one you "manualy" installed.
winrar did not work for me but 7-zip did.
there is also rom extractor built into "multi-tool" and stand alone extractor around here some where.
I found it here
the name is just like the twrp you flashed and just like the partition that you flashed. (recovery_ramdisk.img)

I dont know.
The new way to boot to recovery was written in other thread as "hold both volume buttons & power button"
not sure if it was a problem with extraction or not, but attached is the recovery I extracted. do not have it installed. I dont even have oreo installed., I'm still pulling files together and reading the update-scripts and trying to convince myself if it is worth trying it.

I have now jumped on board and did oreo conversion on L24, then flashed RR. I went and installed the oreo recovery, then back to this stock recovery. It worked fine for me.

Hello all,
thanks for all the info in this thread.
I bricked my Honox 7x (BND-LC21) by trying to go Oreo.
The installation went halfway through, but now I can't complete (missing info howto flash bootloader / kernel) and I also can't go back as the partition layout has already changed to oreo style.
Steps done so far:
- unlocked boot loader
- installed twrp
- extract system image and recovery image from oreo update zip
getting the phone in fastboot mode i can successfully run
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery_ramdisk.img (i can also flash old recoveries this way, but none of them will successfully boot into recovery mode)
fastboot flash system system.img
either way, the system will not boot afterwards.
how do I manually flash bootloader / kernel on the oreo partition layout?
erecovery and hisuite won't recover my phone either...
Any hints appreciated

Unofficial TWRP based on v4.88B - WiFi working, Magisk Rootable

WARNING: Don't change boot slot using TWRP . I am not responsible if you brick your phone.
Many thanks!
Does this mean if you have this IMG, you can flash after any other (even older) IMGs without verify check?
With fastboot and OST LA from here?
That would be a fantastic news!!! :good:
Overall, the fastboot doesn't seem to work on my device. Once I get my phone into bootloader state it says naturally DOWNLOAD MODE but any fastboot devices command ends up with <Waiting for devices>. I've switched drivers from Nokia's one to diffrent non device specific but nothing helps. Any idea on how to fix it ?
- edit -
Came out that the adb and fastboot drivers can't be outdated so be sure to use newest from SDK Platform Tools - otherwise u won't see the device.

With fastboot and OST LA from here?
That would be a fantastic news!!! :good:

Didn't checked by flashing it. But, logically yes. Though system partition is still encrypted. That may cause an issue. But for custom ROM developers - it can be a start. Provided - your bootloader is unlocked.

Came out that the adb and fastboot drivers can't be outdated so be sure to use newest from SDK Platform Tools - otherwise u won't see the device.

Hey,
maybe that can help u.
Fastboot need Admin permissions on windows open a CMD as Admininstator.
On Linux just login into user root.
WORKING
Image is working! Thanks a lot!
Magisk is also working after patch. (With WiFi)

Did you checked if USB debugging is on in the developer settings?

I have it problem on Windows 10 too. If you want very strong, download any Linux-based LiveCD, flash it on USB and load. After this install adb and fastboot from LineageOS site (delete space after "https://" https:// wiki.lineageos.org/devices/bacon/build) and run commands.
P.S.: I am sorry for my bad English, but I hope help you
Wow, you are a genius! So glad to see twrp on our Nokia 8 xD but with encrypted /system. Does it mean nandroid backup is not possible at the moment? Also, with your magisk patched kernel, can i flash over or do i need to first flash twrp then reroot with your method?

Flash TWRP img, then re-root using Magisk method provided in the URL.
Created another version of TWRP. Now /data is browsable, but showing garbled file names So, nanodroid is still unachievable. Don't have a backup phone, so could not take the risk of loosing my data, else could have un-encrypt ICE filesystem encryption and could have build a stock based ROM without encrypted partition.

Thanks bro. You are making tremindous progress on this phone though. Hopefully you inspire other devs to jump the train on our N8
Does this work with a locked bootloader? And if so do I just follow the steps here? Or do I need OST LA?
thank you so much for your time and effort. Much appreciated. Can the stock recovery be backed up and restored Later? Is it advised to flash it on TA 1012 Nokia 8 unlocked? How can we revert to the original state? Does OEM Unlock help in this case? Is it an image of the whole OS like previous mod attempts?

You need an unlocked bootloader. Else fastboot not let you overwrite /boot partition. No OST LA required.

There is no different partition for recovery. So, just flashing the original boot partition ( boot.img ) will be enough to restore. OEM unlocked is required to decrypt the /data partition. This one is just the boot.img modification.

It is the same image for TA 1004 / TA-1012 . Taken from v4.88B update.
I realized that after the download finished. I apologize for jumping the gun. Since I'll have to unlock my bootloader, is there a way to do a full system backup through adb or otherwise? Most likely, I have a locked bootloader and before I can figure out a way to unlock it, I will have to backup as much data as possible since unlocking it will most likely wipe all my data and do a factory reset.
You can not make a backup unfortunately.
could you and other people making useless threads put it in the thread title and OP so that 99.9% of nokia 8 owners that dont have a way of unlocking the bootloader dont waste our time by having the salt rubbed in, thanks

Please help me save my phone

FAILED (Do not allow to flash Bootloader image on Unlock device) & TWRP - Failed to mount '/firmware' (invalid argument)
I'm using the Lenovo p2a42 32gb 3gb version (India)
My phone is stuck in fastboot mode. Bootloader is unlocked.
I have the latest twrp - 3.2.2.0 as recovery.
I flashed everything except the modem and bootloader to stock.
Bootloader & modem wont flash - cannot flash unlocked bootloader error.
I have tried everything I can think of:
1. Restore to stock 7.1 (cannot flash bootloader error)
2. Relock Bootloader (not allowed error)
3. Even gave my phone to a repair guy as last resort.
No luck yet.
Its 17000 bucks worth.
And has been laid to waste due to my ****up.
I really want to repair it myself if possible.
Please help me if you can. I'm open to any and all ideas.
Thanks in advance.
Alright mate,
Download this HERE
Extract it.
Boot phone into bootloader/fastboot mode.
Connect it via cable.
Run flashall - stock reco.bat and wait until it is done. Your phone will reboot on its own.
Gimme some details if it doesn't work. Don't worry, it'll be fine.#
Also: NEVER RELOCK THE BOOTLOADER VIA COMMAND, that is a sure-way to **** it up much more.

Seems like you have a faulty battery or something on your hardware side.
Fun fact: getting into recovery(twrp) is done via Fastboot since the button combo is a ***** and isn't reliable. The timing is too stupid done.
The one team rescue files always work as long as you're in Fastboot/bootloader mode.
It's worth the try
I can't thank you enough @sm00th4f3
You are my saviour. It worked perfectly & my phone is working now.
Thank you sooooo much & keep up the good work.

I restored the stock firmware.
My phone boots to the start screen , after I select the language it's unable to detect or connect to the wifi or to the mobile network.
Therfore I cannot proceed to finish the setup.
TWRP shows a firmware error-
- failed to mount '/firmware' (invalid argument)
Please advice @sm00th4f3

You shouldn't restore stock firmware from backup.
After using rescue tool.
Setup your phone from zero.
Or skip through setup.
Reboot to bootloader.
Flash latest twrp 3.2.3 can be found on official website
Change data system format to ext4 if it's not already.
Wipe system, data, cache and dalvik
Flash custom ROM of your choice
Flash gapps
flash magisk for root if you need it
Wipe dalvik and cache
Reboot.
Setup phone.

I followed your instructions. No luck yet.
After flashing the custom rom, the phone bootlooped.
I changed the data & system to ext4 , I get the failed to mount firmware error.

You really are new to this.
Use the rescue tool.
Let the phone boot.
Skip through setup.
Enable developer options.
Make sure and debugging is enabled.
Connect phone to pc.
Grant always access , which popups on phone.
Open a CMD, in the folder of your adb tools.
Use adb reboot bootloader.
Or use the button combo to get to bootloader /Fastboot mode
Flash twrp.
Boot twrp
Reboot to recovery twrp via reboot menu
Change file system of data to ext4
Reboot to recovery again via reboot menu in twrp.
Now use factory reset, then wipe system partition.
Flash custom ROM
Gapps
Magisk if wanted.
Reboot.
Wait max 10min.
Should work.

I 'm new to this & I appreciate your help, but
I followed your instructions again yet the error remains the same.
My phone is not detecting any wifi or cellular data - so I cant proceed /skip the process of setting up my stock phone.
And when i flashed the custom rom, the firmware error shows up.
And believe me I've tried a lot, but it just wont work.
I've come too far to give up now, any suggestions?

Before flashing twrp.
Use Fastboot oem unlock
.
Try again without custom ROM this time .
I'm looking into it.
Still stuck at the start screen,
I might be wrong but here is what I think is wrong with the phone:
The modem just won't flash therefore no wifi or cellular data.
The firmware is corrupted.
Thanks for your continued support.

Hello, well i messed up my phone really bad. deleted the bootloader. Phone wasnt working. But then used blank flash to get things working again. Just that it only charges now when i run it in bootloader mode. Now what i think u can do is delete all partitions using fastboot. I dont know the terms or words to say, but you can try to delete all partitions and then flash them again and check. use the stock files or what you call those emmc, modem and those bin files that is used to flash via fastboot. It may help but can be risky. Well hope this makes any sense

there is no need to erase your partitions.. Unless you want to brick your device for real.
But you can try it at your own discretion at risk.
i won't help any further since i don't know that much more concerning this kinda problem.
cheers
