Moto G5 automatically boots into TWRP - Moto G5 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, hello there. I need a little help over here.
The other day I made the mistake to install an OTA on my rooted Moto G5 (dual SIM). I had the stock image, TWRP & unlocked bootloader. Of course it failed to install the OTA, but the weird thing is that it always boots to TWRP recovery. No matter if I choose to reboot completely or to boot to system from the TWRP reboot menu, it always goes back to TWRP.
Tried a few things, but none of them worked. Mainly I remember trying the "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear" and did nothing. I didn't try this solution even though problem looks similar. Mainly I didn't want to have to unlock the bootloader and install recovery all over again.
Later I discovered that if I go to the bootloader and hit START from there, boots into OS. So it is functional.
Anyway, I installed Atomic OS ROM thinking I'll get rid of the problem and gain a custom ROM, and everything works, but the problem stays. If I reboot the phone, I have to do TWRP -> Bootloader -> System in order to get it to the OS.
Anyone has any idea on how to fix it?

I have the same problem, it comes back to recovery all the time and we can tell you about it, some help please

Hi, I've come back, hahaha, I installed resurrection remix 7.1, previous all the wipes and reboot in bootloader I gave start and started, great.

I had this problem trying to install the rom ViperOS. I solved it with one of these steps:
- Boot into Fastboot, select "Start" with volume Keys.
- Flash "boot.img" directly from the zip that is ROM, do this using a PC.
- If you're using stock rom, reflash boot.img
Greetings

Have you tried to boot from Fastboot?

Yes, it works once...
But if I have to restart it (or turn off and start with the power button), the phone boot always in recovery.
It is then necessary to restart fastboot then press "start".

Try do a full reset through fastboot and then try installing whatever you need through fastboot and recovery. Much more reliable han ota installs/updates

Moto G5 boots to TWRP
I have the same issue. But the suggestions posted wouldn't help me. I have the stock ROM and I'm rooted with Magisk using TWRP recovery. I want to keep the stock ROM and don't want to go through the trouble of backing my data again. So, I was wondering if there was any work around. Would flashing the stock ROM, Boot and recovery without deleting user data partition help??

Backing up Gigs of data is a huge pain. Even if I have to copy to my pc. So, just something that's less cumbersome.

TWRP bootloops

I've seen this problem mentioned in a few threads but not seen any definitive fix.
My current install :
Stock NPD35K system, vendor, bootloader
Xceede's v8.01 kernel
TWRP 3.02 v6.0
Encrypted data partition
I currently get bootloops every time I boot into TWRP. After using TWRP and attempting to reboot it will then bootloop into recovery refusing to boot the system.
I have found it can be fixed by rebooting into fastboot and the "fastboot reboot" command. But this is frustrating if I don't have a laptop handy.
This happens every time I need to boot into recovery to install or update via TWRP. Is anyone else getting the same bootloops and has anyone found a permanent fix?
Thanks guys.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Hi Jake,
I had exactly the same issue since NPD35K except the fastboot reboot solution did not work for me.
What i could find was that if you flash the default vendor, recovery and cache partition via fastboot and then put off the tablet, it should after all of this boot correctly to the system.
Cheers,
Mathieu
You are not alone ..
I had the recovery bootloop once myself.
I did the "fastboot reboot" command and since then the Pixel C is booting fine again.
Did several installations afterwards .. no problems anymore.
Just once ..
But if you get it every reboot this a real problem.
Right now I am not able to help you .. just don't know the root cause and how to fix it.
As it looks like, it helps if you go back to stock recovery, like mentioned above.
I can not confirm this .. as I don't have the problem.
Good luck !
Thanks for the advice guys.
As I said it only bootloops immediately after boating into TWRP (even if I don't install anything), if I reboot from system it's fine.
At the moment I prefer to keep TWRP installed and reboot from fastboot if I need to use TWRP. I don't see an advantage to installing the stock recovery. It would be great to pinpoint what's causing this though.

I'm still getting this TWRP bootloop. I've tried several versions - 3.0.0, 3.0.21, 3.0.23. I've tried numerous times re-flashing stock using NRT and then flashing the recovery again. I've also tried fastboot-reboot.
I'm on stock 7.1.1 - NMF26H. If i need to install a different version for this to work I can do that.
Is there perhaps some particular version of TWRP that everyone but me is using? Or are there some specific versions of other files that I also need to flash along with TWRP? From what I've read if I get past this once that's probably it.
Thanks

Pls install latest bootloader and latest factory image via fastboot, manually.
Pls use latest fastboot binaries from Google.
Pls install 3.0.2-23 via fastboot as well.
Reboot directly into TWRP and not into system in between.
Install SuperSu.zip v2.79 in TWRP.
Reboot into system.
The first time the system will boot twice .. it's normal.

Thank you. I'll try this today. If I use s tool like NRT to flash "stock" to the device, does that cover what's described in the first step - latest bootloader and latest factory image - or is there something else I need to flash at that step?
Thanks

Maybe your problem is related to the tool itself
For this reason I recommend to use the official google fastboot tool for complete flashing of factory image including bootloader.
To have a proper base to continue ..
Good luck !
EDIT: .. no need to wipe data here. Just a fresh system, vendor, cache and boot image from factory image.

I think that answers my question - the original factory image including the bootloader.
I'll try it in a few hours. Thank you very much!
That worked! I was currently on stock 7.1.1 so I tried it first without re-flashing, although I was prepared to go back to that step if it didn't work.
First I downloaded SuperSU 2.79 and copied the ZIP to my device.
I used Minimal ADB and Fastboot (which I think is taken from the official Google source) and flashed recovery-twrp-3.0.2.23.followmsi-ryu.img.
Then I rebooted into recovery - not system - and flashed SuperSU.
Finally I rebooted into system.
The Google logo appeared for a moment and then it booted again (exactly as you said.) Then it booted normally.
Finally! Thank you very much! Hopefully this will help someone else too. It can be the smallest detail we miss that makes the difference.

Can't boot into recovery after cm14.1 nightly official

So as the title says, after flashing cm14. 1 can't go into recovery anymore, it just a black screen. I tried to use flashify but nothing, a couple of apps show that I have twrp 3.0.2.1 but can't get into it... Help?

Same situation here. Neither booting the recovery via fastboot without flashing nor flashing the TWRP an then booting into it result in black screen. Flashify gives no results here. Please help.

Yeah man im in the same boat, if i get time ill try this twrp recovery. Where did that recovery come from?, it seems like the CM recovery for 14.1 nightly high jacks the recovery partition (i call it that,i dont know the term for it)

I believe the official 14.1 nightlies are based on the CB which requires the modified TWRP, which is what @JKMB888 has linked you to.

Just re flash the TWRP image via Fastboot. Apps like flashify actually use TWRP or whatever recovery installed to flash image file AFAIK. I recommend using modified TWRP,Flashing some roms break the access. But the modified one can withstand almost every new rom installs.
Hope it helps.
Why i have always mount decrypt data when i boot in recovery mode which is TWRP 3.0.2-22 aand ask me to input a password?

At some point your phone data became encrypted. While booted up if you search for encrypt in settings you'll see your phone is encrypted.
Same thing happened to me yesterday after flashing 3.2.7 and booting up for the first time before going back to TWRP to flash AICP. Only way to decrypt permanently, as far as I know, is to wipe all data including internal and completely start from scratch.

Hey, guys. I'm pretty sure I bricked my phone and there's no way to get out.
So I was on CM13 official builds on my OP3. Then, on the OTA update system they have, I got moved onto the CM14.1. I downloaded from here and went into my twrp recovery to flash. I made a clean flash and then proceeded to go back to system. I thought everything was ok until I realised I hadn't flashed a gapps package which I pretty much need to survive as all my contacts backups etc. are on there. I powered off my phone and went to go back into the recovery after downloading gapps 7.1 micro. It went past the *You're device can not be trusted'* and then went to the oneplus screen. After that, it stayed like that for about 30 secs and powered off. At first, I thought I messed something up and tried again. I repeated that for about 3 times and it didn't work. I tried going into the normal system and coming back to recovery and it didn't work still. In fact, now I can't even get into system. Now, i can only boot up to fastboot, where my computer still doesn't realise my phone is plugged in.
Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? I wouldn't say I'm a noob at this because I have flashed many times before but I'm relatively new to the scene. I didn't see this thread before i ripped my hair out and i think wrecked my phone @JKMB888
EDIT: I sorted it out with help from Naman Bhalla's unbrick thread and this. A certain combo works and now I'm on CM14.1 enjoying life

Help on bootloop Moto G5

Hi guys I got bootloop in my moto g5. First I got "failed to mount /data", now the phone boots in unlocked warning screen then says "erasing" then reboots and start over again.
Before the procedure my actions was:
- I got OTA update
- inserted a microSD
- unlocked bootloader
- boot on TWRP 3.1.0
- backup to microSD
-install TWRP
as shown by bootloader screen, my model is "cedric XT1672 32GB P5", M8937_8000.122.02.45R CEDRIC_BRAZILDSDS_CUST.
What I don't understand is why TWRP don't restore, as a made a backup before the procedure.
I appreciate if somebody could help me out!
I had the same problem. Wiping /data corrupted my partition table or system partition.
You need to flash the system and / or the partition table via fastboot from the extracted stock rom (see the other thread arround here, make sure you use the right link (cedric, not the potter one)
-> boot to fastboot
fastboot flash system system.sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.sparsechunk.1
...
It should boot normally afterwards, but probably twrp is gone / twrp has no access to your /data again. See the twrp thread, i'm facing the same issue. But at least the phone works again - without root
Greetings,
Chris
-> boot to fastboot

custom roms do not boot up

hi there,
i used crDroidAndroid-8.1-20180606-riva-v4.3 but there were color problems i didnt know 2 fix so i decided 2 flash a new rom resp. a newer version but no custom rom boots up.
when it tries 2 boot is freezes at the boot screen, then screen switches off and nothing happens. i can go 2 fastboot and recovery.
sometimes it boots up but after a few seconds it freezes 2.
i tried different roms and recoveries but nothing works.
i foolishly wiped internal storage once but then i flashed the stock rom again which boots up. then i unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom recovery and a rom again but the same error is there (no booting up)
anyone got a solution for this problem? no unbricking suggestions plz
edit: im in the wrong thread i think. i wanted 2 post it in "Guides, News, & Discussion". cant delete it. sry for that

cmon guys. i can impossibly b the only 1 who faces this problem.
i dont think its a hardware thing cause stock rom and android 7.1.2 (viper os) work. maybe a vendor problem? could flash another vendor img solve this problem? can sum1 send me his?

Fastboot flash latest miui 10 stable using mi flash tool and use the rom after setting up. Then flash custom recovery and do a full wipe.
This works for most cases.

Crdroid is my choice because aex and rr are very early builds. I like pixel experience but the devs not updating it so crdroid or havoc os.
Like i said use Xiaomi flash tool and flash miui 10 stable via fastboot method(there are 3 options in the bottom select flash all instead of flash and lock to avoid unlocking the bootloader again), don't flash anything else, setup and use the phone, flash recovery wipe all and format, install rom, don't flash gapps yet, boot into rom and see if its fixed.
Use vendor based recovery, if using batik recovery you have to flash batik recovery again after format.
This is my solution.

i did it several times before but 2 b safe i did it again like that:
i flashed riva_global_images_V10.1.1.0.NCKMIFI_20181029.0000.00_7.1_global_f444c158ed.tgz using XIAOMI-TOOL-MiFlash-for-Linux-by-IceMan-master. im on linux mint 18.3. i have 4 options:
flash_all_lock.sh
flash_all_lock_crc.sh
flash_all_except_data_storage.sh
flash_all.sh
i chose flash_all.sh
i booted into the stock rom and set it up, enabled dev options and adb.
then i switched it off, went into bootloader, flashed twrp-3.2.3-0-riva.img via fastboot.
after that i entered twrp, flashed OrangeFox-R8.3-riva.zip and rebooted into recovery
i wiped everything except external sd and usb otg (i dont have these)
after a reboot intorecovery i formatted data then rebooted in recovery
i flahed crDroidAndroid-9.0-20181002-riva-v5.0.zip
then reboot into system
no success as i expected! wtf is wrong wtf. this cant b true!
but thank u very much for ur efforts! perhaps i would try 2 restore a vendor img from sum1 which rom does work. i know its a great demand but could u send me urs? ;D i dont know if there r sum personal info..
best regards
Don't give up there might be a solution.
Pray to God for some help.

Currently I am using Xiaomi.eu beta rom. You can check their website for all the features. Its smooth, stable and can update without needing to got the recovery:victory:
This should work for you because unlike other roms this is based on miui for riva. That means you will get updates till Xiaomi ditches support for riva.
I recommend you use this rom over the global rom until you fix the problem with your phone.
Some things missing:
Choice of region is limited( India is not available)
There is no custom kernel available for miui oreo as of now.
Magisk safetynet not passed
If you're going flash this rom you need to be on latest global beta fastboot rom and need a recovery that supports oreo base.
I use batik recovery base oreo.
yes. i cant b the only 1 facing this problem...!? really. i cant!

dont u have 2 wait 2 weeks or so till bootloader is unlocked?
what exactly do u mean with won't boot up? bootloop? or stuck at boot logo?
after flashing a custom recovery, did u boot directly into the system or did u try 2 boot into recovery? sometimes the stock recovery overwrites the custom 1 when stock rom boots up
my problem is solved. i remembered that i made a full nandroid backup with twrp before i flashed a new rom and the problem appeared. so i restored everything i backed up with twrp (incl cust) and voila, rom booted up. and i can wipe system and data and flash every rom i wanna and it still boots up \o/
i really could have tried it earlier but i didnt think of this untill yesterday ;D
well, thx for ur efforts anyway buddy @NaAnBcEhEuL9A8K7
cheers

[LineageOS 19.1] Reboots to fastboot despite successful install

Hey
couldn't find anything related to my situation so I decided to ask. Here it goes:
After having to wait an entire week to unlock the bootloader (really??) its finally unlocked and I decided to install LineageOS.
Got a Mi10T Lite, gauguin, M2007J17G. It managed to snuck in an update to something like August 2020 security level at some point but after unlocking it got reset, so I suppose it had Android 10 and MIUI 12(?).
Simple enough, have done that countless times before.
- Flashed recovery, format data/factory reset as explained in wiki
- adb sideloaded ROM (nightly builds 20220822 and 20220815) - both succeeded
After rebooting the devices enters the bootloader again.
The wiki never mentions behaviour like this and I couldn't find anything online.
Do I need to flash latest MIUI ROM again?
Any ideas what went wrong and how to solve this issue?
I unzipped the ROM and fastboot boot boot.img which just resulted in a reboot to fastboot again.
Any idea or, preferrably, a solution would be most welcome
Thanks in advance.

Try to flash the last firmware or rom
V13.0.4.0.SJSMIXM
https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/firmware/gauguin/
https://xiaomirom.com/en/rom/mi-10t-lite-gauguin-global-fastboot-recovery-rom/
TWRP

Thx. Went ahead and did that which ofc solved the issue. Thx a lot
Hi, I have same issue. I installed lineage 19.1 2022-09-26 on Mi 10T lite, actually last nightly, and after succesfull installation, after reboot lineage doesnt start and i have just fastboot mode. I have lineage recovery installed, and if i try to install recovery-rom, i dont feel comfortable on installing fastboot-rom, i get error, just after 47% i get unknown signature and it ask if i want continue, if i choose yes continue, on device it says it cant downgrade so its stopped. I also deleted cache but it didnt help, im not very happy to format system partition, im worried to brick it. Should i format system partition? And how deal with missing signature when i try to push stock rom? should i allow it?
