You pay them an extra $60 at purchase . Buying it locked from what I'm understanding, means that by any official means, it's stuck that way. It would have to be unlocked by one of the awesome xda devs finding a way to do it unofficially.

Your better off buying the unlocked model if you want root and roms

Does this work for all variants of the G5 Plus? Such as the model XT1687 for the U.S.A.?

What are the consequences?

No, other than the phone being wiped once. There won't be any functions that are lost!

I can confirm that it definitely worked on my XT1687 (60GB/4GB) $299 US model (not the Amazon no-ads model). This is Motorola's basic unlocking procedure and the same one that I used to unlock my Moto X Pure (2015) successfully too.
The video in this post of the 'How to Root Moto G5 Plus' thread clearly shows every step of this unlocking procedure, but then if you go on to root I'd suggest instead using the latest 'SuperSu rooting method' in that same thread, rather than the Magisk method in the video which was before someone had figured out SuperSU.
There's also this video on removing the Unlocked bootloader warning you'll get on every boot after unlocking.

For how long & If I paid to remove the Amazon offers would they then let me unlock the bootloader? I don't mind the ads just want root so I can use Titanium to backup my entire device and flash custom ROM.
Just wondering...

I couldn't say. As soon as I got the notice that my device could not have the bootloader unlocked I returned it. I didn't care about the ads either, I too just wanted root.

Never. Even paying to remove ads will not allow you to unlock the bootloader. The unlocking is done through Lenovo, and Amazon is not going to tell Lenovo to add your phone to some special list that can now be unlocked. It's just money in Amazon's pocket. So no way around it, you are permenantly locked. You should have returned it for the no-ads version instead of wasting money paying to remove the ads and still having an unrootable phone.

Apparently some clarification is needed:
The "Discussion" portion of the title of this section does NOT include childish insults, grammar policing, or arguing.
What is DOES include is discussion directly related to Unlock Bootloader on Lenovo Motorola Moto G5 Plus (check the thread title if you need a reminder).
Let's remember to stay on topic and follow rules when posting.
Your cooperation is appreciated.

i would just like to be able to turn the ads off, there has to be some sort of way to do so for educational purposes of course.. it has been done on other amazon models with ads, so it can be done on the new moto g5 plus someone just needs to figure out a simple way to do so. I dont want to root or unload anything just stop the service displaying the ads.

I successfully unlocked my USA XT1687 64GB/4GB RAM Moto G5 Plus
I had to install the USB drivers from the Motorola website
As I knew beforehand, I had to restore my applications and data. I had not made a backup because apparently Android still does not come with a built-in method of doing a full phone backup? I do not understand why we need to use a 3rd party application to take such backups - it makes no sense whatsoever that android has been out for YEARS and still does not include such a basic and fundamental feature?!?
It makes me quite angry that the warranty is voided - instead it should simply say that "software support will no longer be provided". It's ridiculous in the first place that cell phone companies are not required by law to provide customers easy access to root!!!

It should be illegal for companies to even attempt to deny/prevent/make it difficult for customers to have root access - this is a very egregious and unacceptable situation IMO (that we tolerate companies getting away with trying to stop users from having root). It makes me SO angry to read messages on support websites like Lenovo saying "it's against the rules" to talk about root access etc!!!

older Xperia devices sometimes got issues after unlock of bootloader (BRICK after FOTA update) - you have been warned
why to unlock bootloader?
u can flash custom ROMs/Kernels
u dont need to worry if the new firmware can be rooted or not as with unlocked bootloader u can always ROOT ur device
Sony gives sneak-peaks/preview builds of latest OS which requires unlocked bootloaders, as they did with Xperia 2011/2012 line, so who knows may be Sony may give early builds of next android OS
Most of this is taken from lollylost100's his tutorial from ARC thread (all credits for that concise tutorial go to him, i have elaborated on a few things and added device specific changes)
btw i dont have this device, most of this testing was done remotely on a users phone... so thanks a lot to him for helping out!!!
[ before we begin unlocking bootloader ]
get the IMEI code for ur device: type *#06# in phone dialer to find it out, note only the digits (no dashes)
download the fastboot package
IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 8 you will need to enable few things to allow driver installation
download the latest FlashTool Xperia Driver Pack and install fastboot drivers (common) & adb drivers for this device from the list!
make sure u have a windows PC with USB cable to connect the phone
power down ur phone and keeping the Volume Up button pressed connect the USB cable to PC this will trigger FASTBOOT mode and windows will start driver installation, which should be automatically done
once drivers are installed just disconnect cable and power on device
[ how to unlock ] (official way)
Go to: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and read everything!
At the bottom click 'Start Unlocking the Bootloader'
First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.
Click to collapse
after u have verified that u can unlock bootloader, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Continue"
you will get numerous prompts, read all info and if u agree click on "Accept"/"OK"/"Proceed"
finally u will get a "Create Unlock request" page, enter your IMEI (sometimes the last digit needs to be removed for this to work), name and email address
You should now receive your unique unlock key via EMAIL, SAVE THIS KEY SAFELY
Extract fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and open fastboot folder
Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
Select 'Open command window here'
Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold Volume UP button and plug in USB Cable) [make sure drivers are installed as explained above)
In the cmd windows type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
If a value is returned (it will return 0.5), it means the phone is correctly connected
Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY and replace KEY with the key which u received earlier.
You're device should now be bootloader unlocked
If this tutorial is too much for you then itskapil wrote a step-by-step guide (and recorded a video also):
-Instructions: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-xperia-arc-play-neo-pro/
-Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRH3pC7MhEA
(the above videos and some steps are for Xperia 2011 devices, but most the steps are same for Xperia Z)
Relock procedure is posted here

Relocking bootloader
With the latest release of Flashtool it is now possible to relock bootloader.
Download the latest flashtool from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Important
DO NOT USE ANY FTF TO RELOCK BOOTLOADER! THOSE OLD FTFs DO NOT WORK FOR THE 2013 DEVICES!!!
before u relock bootloader u have to be on pure stock kernel (flash only the kernel.sin using flashtool), else the device WILL NOT BOOT after relock
Steps:
now start Flashtool and click on BLU button
u will be asked to connect device in flashmode
once u connect the device u will get a prompt to "Relock"
click on it and when prompted disconnect the device
Want to UNLOCK again after relocking? read this!
new driver package uploaded!
Supports Xperia Z1 Compact, Z Ultra (including WiFi only) & Z1 !
NEW:
Flashtool Driver pack v1.2 - 20140204
OLD:
Flashtool Driver pack v1.1 - 20130911
Can anyone confirm that unlocking bootloader on Z1 will wipe it's DRM keys. If so, will backing up TA partition as of Z and Z ultra will prevent this? I do not have the device yet.

I think bionz image processor is software emulation of the processor. have to check the device for confirmation. so sony is protecting their algorithm .. just like X-reality/ bravia engine. the bravia engine that we get for unlocked devices are not exact replica of the original one.
and so it begins!

So if I understood fine, restoring backed up TA backup will give you back all the DRM keys wiped during unlocking bootloader, so Bravia Engine and Music ID will work with unlocked bootloader?

Root Firetv should I?

I have given a firetv to my parents, however I feel the rooted version has few things that makes it more valuable. The version of firetv I gave to my parents got updated and lost its root. I've been contemplating if I should buy a new one on amazon and hopefully root it and sell the non rooted on ebay?
Any view points? Do you think there will be a root for the firetv coming out for the new versions soon?
No one knows when a new root exploit will be available. There is no guarantee you will even get a rootable one. If the pros outweigh the cons of a rooted unit then try to get one. Your best bet for a rootable unit is a staples store.

I did root a friends firetv this past week but the hardware was defective. It had some remote control issues and wouldn't work, so he returned it.

well good luck I'll update this thread and if I get the rooted version and if you don't. let me know and I'll help out if you like and if root's that important to you. I am semi confident I'll get the right version. The trend for not getting rooted versions is mainly the east coast. In LA, they send it from the Las Vegas location which may have the old stock lying around

In my opinion, do this.
When you start the firetv, connect it to wifi and after the intro video, if you see the menu items all fitting in one screen then you have the early version of the firmware which is very good.
Install towelrool and root it. (don't let you firetv idle as it will update) I haven't seen the need to block updates as I can always block the updates before its too late.
After Rooting it, disable amazon update. (note do this quick) before the firetv automatically updates.
Then update to the last rooted firmware using the guide. Not the one which requires unlock
Then unlock the firetv and go to the latest.
Ensure you su/block updates with each and every new firmware.
If you like I can give you all the files readmade. They will be large but Its clearly put in every directory. I also have the downgrade files if you like.
I bought one off eBay a few weeks ago that was rootable. What I have noticed is that the boxes differ on the front with the different addons that you use. The older box had the hulu printed on the front which indicated to me it's still on the old firmware. I was right it was still on the second firmware which was very old.
So as a tip, look at the boxes before buying. Maybe someone can confirm if I'm right or wrong

I've had a refurb now for just a few days. I can honestly say this is the first Android-ish device I own that doesn't overwhelmingly compel me to root and ROM it. The streaming performance is just stellar. And it is the best of the two devices it replaces (Roku 3 and Neo X5) and more. Aside from OTA (which is rare), it streams everything I've asked of it (so for) with aplomb. FiredTV Launcher give me a streamlined, uncluttered home page, and I can switch to the stock Amazon home page with just one click.
My viewpoint? No need. Don't bother. It's not perfect. But rooting it won't change that.

My bad. bummer. Yes you need towelroot to root first and then to downgrade. ParanoiA is right.

Ok. I need to use tr to root my existing firmware and then download 51.1.0.2? Do I need to place any sw after I root in order to use 51.1.0.2?

If you have it connected to internet it most definitely downloaded an update so u need to get rid of it. DO NOT reboot if it is still connected. Download and sideload a newer version of towelroot. Run it. Download and sideload supersu. Run it and select normal method when asked. Adb shell into the fire tv from your pc. Type su then press enter. Grant access on fire tv. Type pm disable com.Amazon.dcp then press enter. Type rm /cache/*.bin
Now it's safe to reboot and it's safe from updates. Follow the guides to downgrade and unlock and whatever else u wanna do.

Mi 5 ROM 7.2.4.0 Global Multi LEAK [Link+Tuto]

This is for advanced user only.
Root not included but Google services yes. This is a stock ROM, with 50 langages included.
If you don't know what are adb command, root, TWRP, don't follow this guide.
Don't blame me if you brick your phone, kill your cat or burn your house.
For UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER ONLY
To install the rom, extact the system.img and boot.img from the rar/zip in the same folder than adb.exe and fastboot.exe.
Then, reboot your phone in fastboot mode with volume down+power.
Plug in to your PC, open and cmd prompt (maintain left shift on the keyboard, right click in the adb/img folder with the mouse and select open cmd prompt here) and write :
fastboot flash system system.img
Click to collapse
Wait 15min.....then:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Click to collapse
Flash TWRP with fastboot....
(fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img)
Make a data/cache wipe in TWRP recovery
When it's done, press power for ~10sec to reboot your phone.
Wait.....(15-30min)
Set up the phone in English, and don't set your Google account immediately.
Once the setup wizard is done,
Do whatever you want.
You can also try to flash the ROM with MiFlash. I didn't tried but it should work, and will be more easier for new users.
If you wanna install root :
Flash SuperSU (last version) in TWRP.
If you can't access your sdcard, wipe the internal storage (sdcard), reboot to TWRP and wipe it again. Then, reboot... Wait... Setup your phone again. Reboot to TWRP and flash SuperSU.
Your phone got now decrypted data partition to allow TWRP flashing files.

Just a heads up if this ROM pack has Mi App Store in it it can't be posted on the site/in the forums.

No Mi app store in this rom, however, there's some nasty bloatware on it. I don't know which one, but after using it for some time, when the screen idle for a long time (I updated a game data), there's this huge fullscreen popup with ads on it.

Most of the bloatware on these ROMs can be removed. Were you able to uninstall them?
Sent from my MI 5 using XDA-Developers mobile app
There is nothing more than a official dev ROM.
I don't have any pop-up after a long idle time.
Not sure it came from system app, check your installed app please.
If you suspect something running in the background, just delete it from system/app manually or with titanium backup.
unfortunately, I haven't unlocked my bootloader so I don't have root. The rom already loaded on my phone when I bought it. Don't know if the bloatware are from the rom or someone else installed it into phone.
:-/, good luck guy. Since I don't have this problem with this ROM, I suppose someone added a bloatware on your phone before selling it.
You can install the dev ROM by the official way, your phone will be in English but you will got a clean install with root.
This is NO official Xiaomi ROM, it is a Custom-ROM.

People should stop advising this as it's not true. You need an unlocked bootloader or already obtained permission in order to get root.
If you haven't yet, you get a message in the root section of the security app telling you you need to unlock the bootloader.

If it comes with bloatware and needs TWRP then this looks like a scam to me. And not like an official firmware
Specially, the link to the dropbox is fishy! If the "official-global firmware" exists it's on the bigota sever of Xiaomi and all you need is the direct link, it's well hidden, but possible to find with a direct link.

This is a leak of the ROM who was used for the MWC 2016.
Remember photos and videos of the event, the mi5 was multilingual. This is why the ROM is old and can't be found on miui.com...v 7.2.4.0

No bloatware at all on the ROM. Try and you will see. This guy have the ROM preinstalled by the seller, who probably putted some crap inside.
By the way, read the tutorial again. I said you can flash it with MiFlash too like any official ROM.

As said before! If it is leaked it's on bigota and accessible by the filename.
Until you can provide the link to the official XIaomi server, at least I won't risk it.
A custom ROM from an unknown source without any background information, and very little benefit isn't worth it.

It's not about being paranoid!
This could also be a custom ROM from one of the Chinese scam resellers or worse.
And it's simple if it's official, it's on bigota.d.miui.com

The only problem I see with your topic is the official part.
You can only assume it is official, but you have no proof, no official link to the location of the file on bigota. So you do not know if it's official, knowledge you could prove. Where "I believe in bla..." doesn't require a proof.
Ok i will change the topic name.
So.
I was rdy to give it a try.
It's a little de-bloated not much, but it helps to delete not 2000 Chinese Apps ( i am German)
The Version on this Shows me 7.2.4.0.0, why?
Maybe that we don't get any ota notifications or something like that?
So far it's the smoothest Rom, compared to latest Dev ( Lags for me whyever) , also to 7.2.8.
Gplay Apps are running much smoother then a manual install, don't find any background Apps which calling home or smth.
Also the battery life is for me on that awesome.
Dev -> Max 6 1/2 h SOT
7.2.8 -> Max 6 h SOT
This beauty -> 7 3/4 h SOT
Thanks for this work.

Android Pay not working with unlocked bootloader!

So, I'm on XDA what did you expect , I unlocked my bootloader and Android pay 'can't verify the software on my device'...
So I can't add my card.
No biggy, but has anyone else experienced the same?
Or am I just super unlucky? ????

It must be based on Android version. My 6P has the same version of Pay as my XL but v the 6P still works and I can add cards to it.
It's a mixture of Bootloader and 7.1
Which sucks...

Truthfully, I think I'll just wait for everyone else on the internet to complain, have Google revert the change and then carry on as normal haha
I'm sure there's some security risk involved. But that's for me to deal with, I can't blame Google because I unlocked my bootloader, that's just wrong.

It's more of a bank requirement than a Google requirement. I don't see that one getting rolled back. If they want more banks on board they need to comply to their security measures and show that the device data can't be compromised. The dev community, while vocal, is small. They want the system available to the masses.

It's funny that you mention that???? because my android pay (version 1.8) is now WORKING with my unlocked bootloader on the Pixel XL.
However, the rest of the internet is having very mixed results. Many not working, only a handful are. And even then, it seems like it might be a temporary glitch
So I am going to have to lock my bootloader, subsequently wiping my phone to use android pay again? D:

Flashing combination file to S10, 10+ and other without using etoken

I came across interesting method for flashing combination files to s10 and s10+, which I have tested and it actually worked really good.
This works only for devices that are Exynos based...
I am still working on putting things together to create DIY guid, because the process is really dangerous, and at one point you will kill your device.
Are you guys interested in this topic or it is just a waste of time?

i know its been quite a while but yes, it works. I also have a way on usa snapdragon devices to flash combo on s10 s10+ and note devices..
i also have method/files for various exynos devices from F variants mainly of a10 a50 note 10 etc.
Both methods require special files.. exynos files u can find some places online but need to purchase them.. snap files are not available anywhere online and if u can find a source they also charge a lot for the files.
Seeing as how theres still no methods or services that provide this I was thinking about getting into but still learming how it would work remotely.
Also, both methods are a bit risky but given all the times ive used it I'd say its pretty safe if you know what youre doing.
Because the snap files are propietary and need to be leaked or obtained from samsung servers I am afraid they cannot be posted. Could potentially lead to legal issues or dmca takedown notices for example.
If anyone is interested, shoot a pm or hit me up on tgram.
Keep in mind factory firmware isnt useable as a daily and mainly used for security researchers such as myself or ppl looking to repair, bypass frp, change csc and other stuff or even repair imei etc etc.
Also if anyone is hard bricked I can most likely fix that as well.
I'm definitely interested.

Should I contact you by pm or whatsapp?
Found a video where they are able to flash a pre-root binary by "bricking" the phone and then are able to install magisk and also unlock oem.
