root verizon with latest updates - Verizon HTC One (M9)

I purchased the m9 on Ebay and made the mistake of downloading the latest updates from big red, anyway to root this device at this point?

I assume you mean, you want to unlock the bootloader and gain S-Off?
there's no harm in trying the easiest option
http://theroot.ninja/download.html
if it is going to succeed it will tell you before you have to pay.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately it didn't work. Any way to flash the phone back to an older version of the software, an ruu without being s-off?

well, the older firmware and ruu files are here

I'm pretty sure you could completely go back to 3.37.605.7

edit : the link to .7 seems to be broken, however the .13 is working
edit 2 : I have a saved 3.37.605.7 RUU file if you find that .13 doesn't work

I followed the instructions in this thread (about a week ago) and it worked like a dream.

[Q] Just took the ota update. Is it too late to root my One?

I updated to Kit Kat this morning. What are the necessary steps for me to gain root? I haven't rooted a phone since my Droid X, so I might be out of the loop on some things. Thanks for any help!!!
So why would you take the update before asking this
Sent from my HTC One VZW using Tapatalk 4
You can still root it. If you go into RUU mode, flash one of the older system RUU's, then get s-off before updating. You pretty much gave yourself a **** ton more steps to do it, but yes, you can.
This link has the info to flash back to an older version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216&highlight=s-on
You won't need the s-on / lock part of that, but you will probably need to flash one of those old system images, then use rumrunner to get s-off and unlocked, then you can update to 4.4, then flash a recovery.
Use firewater-soff.com. Use the temp root method.

If you are s-on hboot will not allow you to flash an older ruu version than you are currently on (downgrade). So that wont work. But as stated in the post above firewater will get you bootloader unlocked and s-off.

So Firewater can achieve S-off with completely stock kit kat? I ask because I just sent my One to be repaired (4.3 S-off) but I have this feeling HTC will update me and possibly return me to S-on.

Might I add the following ...recovery shouldn't matter AND the signed/encrypted ruu must be the same os/firmware (or higher) than what is currently installed.

[Q] updating m9 verizon out of US?

Hi, i use m9 verizon out of the US. i can't even check if there is an update. it says "updating ony works in CMDA mode". I can use my phone , mobile internet 3g etc. i hate it and i want to know if i can flash rom and working normal, updating itself and no wrong sim card alert?
Do you suggest any rom? Or can i install just one EU rom? Thank you.
You shouldn't flash an international ROM on your Verizon M9 unless it includes support for Verizon.
As far as updates, they will be posted here when they come, so you will be able to stay up to date as long as you are S-Off.

MM to N firmware advice

Hi guys.
Finally decided to jump to N firmware.
Followed the guide on how to do it as I was on Viper.
Now I have uprooted, back to stock recovery and on stock MM 1.80.401.3 and have tried to update using the OTA Update file and stock recovery but it won't work. Keeps failing, complaining about strange file structure or something.
Any tips?

There is a WWE RUU, just flash this?
Ensure you backup all your data when flashing it though...it will wipe everything, including your internal sdcard.
The much easier way would be to S-oFF and flash the nowipe firmware in fastboot.

A firmware package that doesn't wipe your phone's data when you flash it, as opposed to something like an ruu that typically wipes your phone when you glass it.

Thank you for your replies. I am only curious because I am fairly new to this phone, and I do travel abroad. I just want to make sure I know everything about it when I finally SuperCID to 1111111 and flash GSM firmware. I just don't want any surprises when I do that. So I watch all the HTC 10 forums, whether or not Sprint. I own this phone. It is not a lease or under contract. I am free to do whatever I want to do with it, I think.

Very informative link. Thank you. I won't be using the "Batch Tool" as I only run Linux since 1995 and never Windows, which this seems to be written for. Not a problem, as I might be able to compile it for Linux.
Has anyone got a link to the proper RUU I need? I can't seem to get the right one.
I'm back to completely stock everything MM firmware.
I've tried a few of the RUU. EXE files but always get the wrong one lol.
HTC 10 unlocked from the united kingdom and used on EE.

check firmware version?

So I managed to flash a rooted developer edition rom on my m9 and when I tried to run ota updates, I got an error saying that it couldn't finish because my phone's software has been modified. After some searching around (and admiditantly some arguing), found out that it's because my firmware doesn't match my android version. I'm still running android 5.0.2 and I don't THINK I messed with the firmware. So how do I check the firmware version and find either a rom (preferably as close to stock as possible) or a ruu that will work for the software/firmware versions that I'm using?
Please do a "fastboot getvar all" and post here.

If you have S-OFF it's simple to convert, I'll show you a little tutorial.
If you don't have S-OFF it's impossible and you'll be stuck with this firmware if you won't get an AT&T sim.

I don't have S-offor or the $25 for sunshine. Shouldn't there be a t-mobile, MetroPCS or developer rom or ruu that's compatible with the firmware I'm using?

You can only flash AT&T because of CID, every carrier have different CID and because that the different RUU will give you error.
Only with S-OFF you can change CID and MID and flash any GSM RUU.
So, you're stuck with 1.32.502.9 firmware until you get an AT&T sim to update it or s-off it.
With this firmware you can only flash custom roms with Android version 5.x and some 6.0.x but just few 6.0.x and maybe will be unstable.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Ah, okay. So basically, I have to go back to AT&T then use a series of ruu files to work my way to nougat then finally flash the custom rom?

Or you can just flash this RUU, then update it from settings, it's more simple.

That's actually why I tried flashing a rom. AT&T won't let you get updates unless you're using their sim card for some ungodly reason.

I understand what you tried but it's impossible to jump firmware to 2.xx.502.xx or more with RUU, this can be done only with OTA on S-ON phones.

No, you cannot update it to 2.xx.502.xx or more with RUU, just OTA, Flippy explained you why in the other thread(different encryption between 1.... 2... 3... and 4... firmwares).
So the only way to update your firmware is to flash the RUU I give you(don't flash twrp, root, etc), get an AT&T sim and update it from settings until you reach nougat.
I don't explain it one more time... I think I explained the same thing in different ways 3-4 times....
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Excuse me. I was thinking/hoping software provided by HTC themselves would be able to upgrade the firmware along with the OS instead of forcing everyone to be stuck with the only option for software upgrades from a carrier that we don't even want/use. It only makes sense that if it can be done on samsung phones, which I've rooted and flashed several times, it could also be done on HTC. So it looks like the only way to get nougat is to suck AT&T's ****. Thanks.
