unlocking bootloader in stock MM - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a Z00A and it just got back from RMA. It returned with MM, so I want to install twrp and Lineage. I have read many tutorials on unlocking the BL but they all seem to refer to Lolipop.
I read somewhere that to unlock the MM BL, you must downgrade do lolipop. Is this the current method of unlocking the BL?
I tried to to install twrp in fastboot, but it seems that my device is not recognized by my computer in fastboot (I'm running Fedora Linux), maybe because it is with the locked BL.
Any help is much appreciated.

Just a follow up. I tried to flash the recovery:
bash-4.3$ sudo fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-Z00A.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'recovery' (15316 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.920s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.645s]
finished. total time: 1.565s
but it seems it didnt work. All is in the same state as before

Go root your phone, if rooted there should be Superuser installed on it. Alternatively, you can use root validators available on Play store.

Im facing this same problem! my bootloader is unlocked and my phone is confirmed rooted with super user installed etc. help
I am in the same boat. I have it rooted. I have switched my xperia play r800x over to ntelos. I have enabled tethering. Superuser is present. But when I try to fastboot it says please root device. I am lost now. I will search the internet some more to see if I can find a solution. If I find the answer I will post back with it.

Ur boot loader is unlocked properly.
Once you do it... use flash tool... it'll tell you exactly what's wrong

i'm using Xperia Neo L
bootloader status: Unlocked
rooted via here
but when trying to install CM9 kernal for paranoid android room, seems like i'm on the same boat too
make sure ur bootloader is unlocked properly
A friend of mine had a similar issue on his Sony Live with walkman (WT19i).
the unlock code he used was not correct as IMEI he submitted was wrong. however it showed the bootloader is unlocked and device rooted.
trying again wont harm. make sure you use only 14 digit IMEI (ignore the last digit) at http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com

According to the log, your bootloader is not unlocked. Try to unlock it again. Which method did you use the first time?

It was already unlocked bootloader since the beginning, I used Aroma ROM first, then i used Atomic Jb. I never unlocked the boot loader since it is already unlocked.
Is it the reason of the rom it got locked. If yes, how do i unlock it bcos i'm able to do fastboot and fastmode only

Updating baseband/modem WITHOUT flashing ROM - i.e. people running on CM12 - how to?

Hey guys,
Had a quick question that I hope somebody here can answer.
Want to update the baseband to the newest version contained in the .90 update but I'm running CM12. Obviously I don't want to go through the hassle of reflashing CM12, so want to flash the baseband through recovery/adb/fastboot if possible.
I understand that the baseband is in the ifwi.zip file within the update, and that within this zip are a few files in regards to each ZF2 model. The two files of importance are the ifwi*.bin and dnx*.bin files. From some searching it seems that these can be flashed through fastboot.
My questions are:
Which one is modem/baseband and which one is bootloader?
Can one be flashed without the other?
Cheers guys
So I did the following with the files from ifwi.zip
fastboot flash dnx dnx*ze551ml.bin
fastboot flash ifwi ifwi*ze551ml..bin
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Click to collapse
The operation completed successfully, bootloader still unlocked and ROM still intact.
Doesn't look like baseband was updated though. Might be located elsewhere?
I thought CRPalmer included the binary updates in the latest CM. I have a baseband version of 1535_5.0.37.1_0831
What is the latest?

What hassle? It takes about 5 minutes tops to download and dirty flash the latest CM build. You don't even need to connect to a PC - DL the file from the thread, reboot into TWRP, wipe cache/dalvik (from the advanced wipe menu, not sure wiping is really necessary but I always do), flash the CM build, reboot. Easy.

You are correct. I did ask in the thread whether this was the case and nobody answered, so I went to figure it out for myself.
Bootloader is updated by the ifwi files but not baseband. Baseband is part of the blob files comes with the ROM.
I am so used to devices having a separate baseband (Nexus, SGS etc) that it carried over to this phone - hence the thread.

I am aware of that, I do it every day I was thinking I might have needed to flash the stock ROM to update the baseband - of which I haven't seen a way to flash from TWRP recovery yet. Now aware this isn't the case as the baseband files are part of the blob files that are integrated into the ROM.

and your phone's bootloader is unlocked? i think this is one of the most important thing if you wanna chenge baseband
Bootloader unlocked. I've installed TWRP previously so I'm not sure why this problem popped up all of a sudden.
Question, if I install the stock recovery and reinstall the stock rom with via adb sideload, will that update the modem?
Yumms, you've probably found out the hard way by now, but I believe it will

Re-Locking the Bootloader possible?

Hi. Would it be possible to relock the bootloader somehow?
Or remove the warning before booting?
I tried the stock images.. but it seems to need a signed boot.img

Well, you must be fully stock before locking BL.
Or you could wait for a custom logo to be uploaded.
I haven't rooted my Albus because of the apparently zero development in XDA, hopefully this changes soon.

Oh, wait. Are you saying, if you are fully stock, you should be able to relock the bootloader?
I initially unlocked the bootloader, put on TWRP and rooted, but since no development was going on, I went back to "stock", using the images Junior Passos has posted. I'm now receiving OTA updates fine, but obviously can't use Android Pay because my bootloader is unlocked.

Sorry. Still definitely NOT possible. When flashing back to stock, you're NOT able to flash the boot.img, because it's not signed.
Without a proper signed boot.img, the command fastboot oem lock gives you an error, saying that boot.img isn''t valid/properly signed.

You don't seem to understand what's the problem here: you can NOT go back to FULL stock because you can NOT flash an untouched boot.img, because there DOES NO SIGNED version exist!!!
IF you say it would be possible, please kindly describe ALL the steps to do so!

You need to downgrade the ROM to Stock Marshmallow using QPST/QFIL and then unlock the bootloader.
I got this info from someone who had the exact same issue.
