Aosp from source - Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra Questions & Answers

I will be building aosp from source in the next two days or so and will need testers who have twrp already installed. Please let me know if you are willing and available to test.

Big difference but a great phone. I just moved so it's going a little slow as I settle in but internet is set up, and I have a fresh Linux install. Setting up build environment tonight and I'll keep you updated

Any luck?

Please send me the asop Rom for the Sony xa1 ultra

Not yet, to be honest never developed before other then one port, about six years ago. So the going is slow. Also doing this between work and a one year old son. Sorry for the amount of delay

Just so you all know it's building now

Do you have the ability to test?

I can test it just need to know how to back up DRM keys, etc on this one. Have custom rom on previous phones just need to be aware of process on this phone.

I would like to test to, twrp is installed, just need to do a backup beforehand

Deleted as I made headway

So an update for everyone.... Well I spilled beer on my keyboard.... Can't make this **** up... So I just got a new keyboard( sorry it took a bit) but I've got a new one and back to work. I'm sorry for the delay but this is my first foray into rom development and while it might not be a big undertaking for most, this is a first for me. I'm going to attempt lineage first, as they have the most up to date documentation, this will not be 8.0 and even once it's out for us I probably won't go there for a long time as I do not yet have the skills to troubleshoot and provide a reliable rom on a brand new os (for us atleast) so thank you for the patience as I'm doing this with a 1.5 year old who loves to cause chaos, (lol), hope all is well and I will update as I can

I've just brought the phone, I'm in for a test.

Would definitely be interested in testing as well. Thanks a lot for the work you're doing. I think this phone has a lot of potential outside of what Sony has done for it.

Sorry guys I believe the project is dead. I've had some things come up and I think it's possible and feasible but I'm going to have to invest what time I have into searching for a new job as my boss committed suicide this week...

So sorry to hear this.. Hope you find a new job soon. Phone is certainly not a priority. All well to you!

CyanogenMod 12/Android L Discussion

Hello everybody.
So I was wondering, when CyanogenMod 12 comes out, will they still support all of the devices they have been supporting? Or at least, in specific, our device? I can't imagine why'd they drop support.
Also, I hear in the new Android version, the Linux 3.10 kernel is being used. As opposed to the current 3.4 kernel we are using. Does anybody know about any significant changes between the two?
This is very exciting if/when we get this on our device I personally will just wait on a CM or AOSP version of Android as stock never really does it for me.
I don't know, but the more I think about it, the more excited I get (also the more apprehensive I get since I'll have to upgrade my kernel sources).
I know I probably shouldn't bring this up, but I also can't wait to blow my friend's new iOS 8 update out of the water with CM12/L (Not like CM11 doesn't already do that )

I'm so excited about this. It will be sooooooo cool. I need to learn to develop ROMs and stuff, because if developer support dies for this phone I would want to keep the development going.
Well then start now rjm....... Better now then never

You'll have me doing the little bit I can for this device for the next 8-9 months I'm stuck with this thing
Don't worry about developing ROMs, all you really need to know is how to compile and maintain. I plan to attempt at some unofficial builds of a ROM or two once I can deem my kernel as done. But don't worry, the LG OGP is definitely booming with activity right now, and will probably only get better with the following months to come.
We already have:
Gummy
PAC
Beanstalk
CM11
AOKP
AICP
Vanir
and a pretty good range of stock ROMs.
Soon (and I mean within a month or so) I hope to add Carbon and Paranoid Android to this list, but we will have to see. I do not know how to compile unofficially or much about it, but it doesn't look extremely difficult. So my hopes are high.
Plus, as this device drops in price, we may get some more people to keep development for this device relevant. Although I did not see our device in the local AT&T store last time I was there...
We have a beautiful phone with the processing power to last as a quality device for another year at least. LG makes some pretty nice stuff.
Unfortunately, we will be seeing more and more of our users leave as the months drag on as this phone gains age
We'll have to see who lasts the longest with this phone as their primary device... lol.
I suspect we will reach our peek in ROMs soon a few months after Android L is up and running. Just my guess though.
Shayne has a good point though, now is definitely the time to start. So better hit the tutorials!

It seems as though a lot of ROMs by that particular dev get abandoned eventually... but that's none of my business.
Yes AICP would be a great one to start on, first thing is first though, rjm, get yourself on a Linux VM or a Linux computer. Also, I hope you have some decent specs or it'll be hell trying to do it.
For example, I have an AMD FX-6350, so I have 6 cores in my system. I can allocate 4 to my VM
And you'll want some RAM, too. Like 8 GB so if you're using a VM you can allocate 4 as well.
For the distro I suggest using Linux Mint 64-bit (has to be 64-bit).
And I really hope your host OS is 64-bit, because otherwise you are probably incapable of compiling ROMs.
Best of luck!
P.S: I downloaded Carbon sources today. We'll see how that goes.
Oh also be sure you have PLENTY of free space, those sources love hogging space. I just cleaned out my old VM and set up a new one with 200 GB of space allocated. Thank God for Terabyte HDDs
Staying on topic, the L/5.0 SDK was released today. Approx. two weeks until the official Nexus release, and hopefully not too long until we get a taste of that afterwards.
KitKat was great (it felt like the smoothest Android experience ever when I flashed my first KK ROM) but I'm ready for Lollipop!
Material design looks interesting, although I gotta say... the circle triangle square virtual buttons aren't the best design choice imo. Maybe it's to make switching from an iPhone to an Android easier for the iUsers that find the current system to difficult to understand  They sure like their shapes of rounded edge squares and circles.
I'm not kidding, actually. A friend of mine steals my phone all the time and she cannot figure out PIE to save her life...

I don't think I want to compile AICP. Beanstalk is the only ROM IMO that really would be a loss if development stopped. The features of Beanstalk outnumber those of other ROMs

I'm pretty sure Beanstalk only releases stable updates. From what I remember there aren't any nightlies, as it sometimes is months before a new update is released. That is another reason why I like Beanstalk better than other ROMs.

Probably a sort of noobish question, but anyway many roms are cm-based (including beanstalk), and even aokp is cm enabled. How dependent are these roms on cm, basically meaning could they sustain themselves without cm continuing support too?

I think CM official support is close to vital for these ROMs, mainly for the kernel, but also because they update the device thingy you use to build ROMs I do believe.
I am 90% sure we will receive updates from CM though. They sure know how to take care of their devices.
Any custom ROM will do, if we are talking about testing the new Android L. What's bothering me is the support for F240x devices. If CM, Beanstalk, VANIR/COMMOTIO or AICP (the one I am using for a long period of time), will release an update, will there be a KERNEL or ROM that will work for the F240x?

I really hope it is for your sake. Luckily the dev that makes F240 ROMs for you guys seems to know what he's doing, and I'm sure he'll keep working for you. As long as e980 has support he can use that kernel and use it for F240.

Work so far...(development for the device blind.)

Just wanted to give some heads up... FIrst off i wanted to thank you guys for getting twerp and a stock dump of the rom that was a major help..
Secondly i wanted you to know where im at ..
After spending 2 days in repo hell (god gotta love Ubuntu for that.)
I have started working on this devices device tree for the kernel and the device itself...
So far im working on 2 branches from the same tree sense there fundamentally built the same way ill fork them for less confusion after...
What does this mean... Well im working on Ubuntu (Touch OS) for this device.. ( i dono i just love the way it looks and alot of the features for it.) Secondly sense Ubuntu os is based off asop atm it will also help other devs Get CM roms faster.. I am no kernel dev so if any Kernel devs would love to help once i get enough of the device tree up ill give out the github info... WHile we dont mind forking for your own ends.. It would be nice if people could send push and pull requests so we can have one master source... ( dont worry you will always be credited were not about kanging. )
Sincerely,
Team Acid.

No not yet but then i havent built anything atm so when i start doing builds im sure something will come up... I dont expect to many issues as mali has a nice tendancy to release source for there gpu's well they used to at lest... The whole thing is to use as much open source drivers as humanly possable while it makes development time longer (some features may not work as well as the pritortary blobs in the beginning) it does help the community more when we want to do things and can work directly with the source instead of ****ty hacks and workarounds

I wish you luck. Mali driver source comes from the ddk which requires money and has licensing issues. The other code for gralloc/hwcomposer/mobicore is ancient and a good chunk of it doesn't compile against the kernel headers out of the box. I could go on but I'm in week three and I don't have the graphics subsystem up yet.

please..first rule of CM or XDA, never ask for ETA, and never ask or push developers to speed up their work or we will never get any of it..
just keep waiting and when the time has come, they will share it with us..just dont keep asking for ETA please.. and i hope that xda newcomer on zf2 forum must learn this word, NEVER ASK FOR ETA for any development..its a taboo here..

I'm not. Something I learned some time back is that unless the kernel and device tree of the aftermarket ROM (like AOSP, or a derivative like CM) is developed by someone that knows every last nook can cranny of the device (as in the OEM, and I don't imagine that happening), the device won't be optimized out of the gate to provide better battery life than stock.
Hacking a device tree from scratch, rather than building on what the OEM has provided (albeit not knowing what route they are going with this one) spells problems. Of my two devices that I had custom ROMs for, neither worked fully (no matter which ROM you chose) or engaged more hardware (something was always missing or broken) , and the battery life was worse than stock (even with modest OS jump, from stock GB to ICS/CM9).
You can see how I voted, although I am not reserved to stock forever. CM13 or CM14 would be the time I would be interested in something other than stock, when the kernel and device tree becomes mature enough to prove myself wrong regarding the above.
The only thing I like in official FW is "double-tap to wake".
But it's actually not "double-tap to wake" because the phone never sleep.
When I watched CPU state with CPU Spy and found out Deep Sleep state never be used.
The reason why it's drain about 1%/hour even not connecting to anything.

You could follow here if you wanted. I believe the only thing you will get here with regards to CyanogenMod for the ZF2 will be the ROM post/thread when it is ready. I understand what you are getting at. My point was this particular thread should not have been made in the first place. A simple search would have yielded info the OP was looking for (with the exception of an ETA).
Shame on me but never saw any CM rom, not even from distance. Can someone link me some good source of picture/video so I can see some good/cool stuff about CM and decide if it is worth more than ASUS stock rom (which is pretty good by me)?

will paranoid android ever release ?

hello ive been waiting for pa from a long time ( just like all of u ) but looks like its not happening ,,, is it coming soon enuf or should i just try out other roms ? any suggestions for other roms ? im still on stock but looking to change now ,, thank you ,, appreciate your help
It will come ... Someday. If you'd like to try some ROMs, do it. It's pointless to wait for something that doesn't have an ETA.
When it eventually comes, switch to it, simple.
I've also been on stock (more or less, switching between stock stable, beta, FreedomOS and ExperienceOS) for a long time, mainly because of reports that camera isn't as good on custom ROMs. Then a few weeks ago I finally got myself to try Sultan's LineageOS and I don't regret it. Now I'm definitely not going back to stock ? I did install OOS camera port to keep the same camera experience and I have to say it works perfectly.

Try vertexos. You'll know how it's better than many many ROMs , putting up to the quality OOS offers. The dev has put in very very high efforts in porting EAS which is a deep pixel exclusive to our device and has made it better than pixel itself. You need to try it out. The other awesome ROM around here is sultan's unofficial CM14 . you can use these until aospa comes.

hahahaa ,, i really hope so sir ... been waiting a long time ,, been a loyal user,, but idk why it has got everyone frustrated now ... youve literally told Soon from december ,, even may is going to start in a day ,, android O has come out too and yet the same Soon is said .. dont get me wrong sir ,, please dont ... dont mean to down your work but might as well release and then make it perfect i guess ? i mean even exodus was a long wait ( i have a opo too ) and y`all waited a long time to release saying it wud be perfect , but when you finally did ,, it was great but there were bugs right ? its like unavoidable no matter how hard we try ,, might as well release it ,, u get a large scale feedback which will just ease your work and help you ...
Carbon ROM is a good old ROM that just reborn. I would also like to see PA soon, but good stuff takes time.

Seriously Overdue On Nougat.
Soon means that PA will come after new OP phone and android O is released and noone will use it, too bad.

It basically tweaks the system depending on your usage to save on battery without causing lag.
I made a twitter account 6-7 years ago. Then never logged in. From December I always log in to twitter just to see if there's any update of AOSPA from arter97 ? Everyday man, everyday.

Looks like they are preparing for something: https://gerrit.aospa.co/#/c/2480/
Alex Naidis states that the code review is skipped due to "time pressure".

It was for sound recorder. Meh.

AOSPA never gonna be released. Their trademark should be FOREVER^TM.
Even Google released the beta android O to test it out.
The release cycle of PA is quite frustrating. Only gonna release of the rom if its stable. What's the point? I'm sure there will be plenty of bugs even after the release.
They should allow users to beta test build so that they can get more feedback to work on, instead of searching for them on their own.
It's been a month from their last post regarding some new update. What's the point of posting a comeback pic if are not gonna keep the fans informed about the rom.
I know we are not paying them and they are doing it in free time but their new egoistic approach towards the release cycle has made things worse to the loyal fans of PA. It's sad that I've to say this one day.
Hope PA stop making further development and stop damaging the name of the best rom during his days.

I think they are very close to release ASOPA, though I'm agree with you. They should have let us test.

[Question] LineageOS for G5s (MONTANA)?

Hi all,
does anybody know if there is some development ongoing to get LineageOS running for our G5s? The G5s Plus is already running on LOS, maybe the G5s follows soon?
I do not really want to start using the phone before moving to LOS
We need los
be patient, this thread is not in the right section.
It's look not a lot of development around this phone sadly :/
I think everyone bought the Plus version and not this one. So just be patient and watch the ROM/kernel forum.

Let's hope that the developers won't think that way and they're on their way porting LOS for our devices
I bought it because I prefer smaller phones.
someone developing ROMs and spending much time for their phones may prefer the bigger ones.
I may be able to build a ROM for it but I don't have time to dig into this ATM. If someone points me to the required source maybe I'll try.

What is ATM?
At This Moment.
Just a question to the audience. Is it just a matter of time for the LOS support to come for this device? I thought that every MotoG phone was getting it!
It shouldn't be overly difficult to support LineageOS on this device, but it just needs someone with the right skills willing to dedicate around 20 hours of effort once I get around to finishing up my commonized device tree project for this device family. I don't have the device, but I might even try if I have time to spare, but I can't make any promises.
It will be amazing to have first custom rom for this phone thanks
Please to the dev, give interest to this phone
