XZP Camera distortion sadly also present with XZ1 Compact - fixed in 47.1.A.5.51 - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

UPDATE: Sony has announced a fix in a future firmware update, release ETA is end of November. See post in thread with links
UPDATE 2: Firmware version 47.1.A.5.51 has the fix! Note that you'll have to manually enable distortion correction in the camera app settings, it's disabled by default for some unknown reason.
Just replaced my Z5C today with a brand new XZ1 Compact. It's a mixed bag for sure, with some improvements and some steps backwards (no FM radio, double tap to sleep/wake...), but the worst thing I feared is the same camera distortion issue first reported by XZP users, and unfortunately it's bad news.
The XZ1C main camera takes distorted pictures as well. Boo!!!!!

Have you taken the same picture with different settings to see if it gets any better and is the Album rendering time still an issue?

Really bad news as my z3c takes excellent pictures only problem with the camera i have is the stupid auto mode that i have to change every time when i started the camera, before i shoot a pic. Hope they disabled this presistent crap.

I do know that if you launch the camera from the lock screen (by holding down the physical shutter button), it defaults to Auto mode. If you launch the camera app manually after you've unlocked the phone, it defaults to your last used setting.
Yes, it's annoying. That said, I've read a review somewhere that claims the auto mode has improved a lot since then.

Yeah, the same distortion using the manual camera.
And yes, the Album still takes an awful long time to render a sharp image. I thought it would be solved with the newer chip and UFS storage, but I guess not.
I also wasn't able to find Photo Analyzer to disable in the system apps, which some say were causing delays in earlier models.
If it makes any difference, I've disabled Movie Creator.

Can you take a photo from a checkerboard grid from straight above to analyze how bad the distortion really is?

Thats no surprise. All imx400 sensor from Sony has this lense issue. There won't be a fix. Sony already told there is no problem. Take your money back or accept it. Good luck to us all lol

I've read several reviews and the distortion is not mentioned anywhere. It's this affecting all phones or is it just that some have the issue and others don't?

Probably all phones affected that fitted with the 19mp sensors i am working in the phone repair industry we had same years ago with htc m7 and m8 models but after a while htc declared a camera recall and we replaced them in warranty. Doubt it will happen with sony xz, xz1, xz1c too many units involved and cost to high. Finally we got another compact flagship that "faulty by design".

its mostly visible in close up photos and straight lines. Thats why you dont see it in reviews because they dont take photos of straight buildings all the time even thou you can see the distortion is the fotos from serveral reviews.

That's bad news.. Can't it be easily fixed with snapseed or the default photo editor?
Also, if you're kind enough, I would like to find out if we can FINALLY take raw photos with the XZ1 compact. Could you try with a 3rd party app and let us know?
That's the reason I left sony after Z3 compact, and I would love to return but this is holding me back

Re: RAW support: that's a big negative.
Besides, if they supported it, I'll bet they'd emphasize it their marketing.
Don't think the distortion is something that can be easily fixed post editing, the photo is already "damaged". Sony needs to fix the algorithm at the source.

check this tread guys really is a joke and we paying for the crap camera? I should get my XZ1C tomorrow and throw it back to the shop and cancel the contract immediately if is turns out the same. I still using my older Z3C no camera issues no distorted pics, ok low light is different cake. But really if is that bad i rather keep my z3c instead of a again faulty flagship unit. Unfortunately nobody else manufacturing small form factor devices like the sony compact line with 4.6" display. Will see tomorrow might just getting a new or a second hand z5c after all.

As a previous owner of Z1C > Z3C > Z5C, I strongly advise against that idea. If your Z3C is functional, DO NOT exchange it for a Z5C, it's a worse phone overall due to the horrid Snapdragon 810 chip that plagues all flagship phones of that era.
You will lose the great battery life you're enjoying with the Z3C, and encounter slowdowns and lags all over the place due to the throttling. Even when throttled, the phone still gets crazy hot.
Not worth it.

Thanks for the info mhaha. Yes my z3c still works and looks prestine. Battery lasts 3 days on normal usage no facebook or other social media app installed also rooted with locked bl.

So how noticable/bad is this issue? If i'm primarily taking shots of the family will this be badly noticeable? Is it easily fixed in editors on the phone?
The specs of the XZ1 compact are perfect for me but the camera is a big issue if its truly bad. I'm due to go and upgrade tomorrow so need to know really or if its a case of try it and then return in the 14 days if its bad.

I will have mine today is already in store but i need to collect it. I will xheck it oob before i sign anything.

epson vs nova screen. differences?

I've been reading that there are two different screens being used. One from epson, and one from nova. What are the differences between these screens. Are they both still 16 bit? Is the brightness different? Any other differences?
Is there any way to tell which screen you are getting before you buy? Are evo's still being made with both screens?
Not sure anyone knows the answers to those questions. I have a revision 0003 with a nova screen, and before this fps fix business came up I was happy with the look. The touch input lag concerns me more than the 30 fps thing right now.
how do you check your hardware revision?
Go to settings -> About phone -> Hardware Information, under Hardware Version
0002 = Novatel
0003 = Could be either, you have to run and pipe some log to find out which one you have.

Too bad. The touch lag and 16 bit screen are what are making me lean towards the galaxy s right now. I'm waiting to see if either the htc evo gets better by the time the galaxy comes to sprint (in some form) or the galaxy shows up with big problems making the evo relatively better. Hopefully the epson screen will fix at least the lag. 18 bits would put me over the edge.
I have a 002, im very curious on what the differences on the screen's are.
Nobody really knows except for the epson 30fps limit has been fixed and the novak not.
People are reporting the novak has a purplish tint to it. the side by side pic it looks pretty obvious but YMMV..
the biggest issue I have with the whole thing is from the users who have applied the 30fps fix they all say input lag is gone and its very noticeable!
Maybe at some point the issue will be fixed for the EVO's with novak screens but I'm not sure I am willing to bet being locked into a phone and carrier for 2 years.

There is still a week and a half to exchange your phone. Do you know how LONG that is in XDA-time? We have had our phones for 2 and a half weeks (granted we had root before release but still) and look at what all has been accomplished.
Personally I reloaded my sense (on a 002 nova) and I found my color to be in between the two (not as "purple" as the first and not as "black" as the second). I got caught up in the "purple vs true black" debate, but I'm finding that it really isn't as much of an issue to me.

Everyone keeps saying this but I don't think it's true. You have a week and half to RETURN the phone (assuming you bought on launch day). You have nearly a year to exchange the phone for any kind of defect because of the warranty.

I believe after the 30 days you get a refurbished phone whereas if you do it within the 30 days you can get a brand new replacement. YMMV, but I know with the relationship I have with my Sprint store theres a good chance I could get a brand new replacement even after my 30 days...

For those of you who are interested, here is a picture of novatec vs epson. I happened to get a 002 with novatec and my brother got a 003 with epson. The left one is mine and the right one is his. These phones were taken in the dark with the same screen brightness and same wallpaper. You can see that with the novatec screens, the color has a purple hue to it. The background is supposed to be black, but you can clearly see it looks kind of purple.

Agreed, but I don't know that all Nova panels have that hue. I have an 03 with the Nova panel and it definitely does *not* look like that.
I would just say I believe there will be a 30fps fix for the Nova panel. The only reason the Epson was first is because that's what the Developer had.
Also, ever panel tends to have their own advantages and disadvantages. I'd be very surprised if the Epson panel is the "ultimate" panel. There are probably tradeoff's to both panels ... we just haven't recognized them yet.
I do believe the Epson panel in that picture looks to have problems with the blacks looking a little grayer and the whites look a little white-washed, but that could simply be due to the brightness.
Who knows...maybe the 0004 revision will have the best panel of all. ;-)
Honestly I just want my input lag gone..I don't care about the colors really mine seems fine..
Part of me is just like hey if I am going to wait around for a complete fix then I might as well wait for the next phone that doesn't have it to begin with.

Well the 30fps fix also seemed to fix the input lag.
I understand why you might want to jump ship for a different phone. If I didn't love everything else about the EVO (and know that the issues I have are fixable), I would probably be in the same boat. Having said that, it seems like every device has their own issues. Granted the HTC devices I purchase always seem to always have a few more for some reason...

Widespread camera "focus" issues with the Lumia 900

I've had my Lumia 900 since the pre-order availability date, so I've "kicked the tires" for a week and a half now. I love the phone, to be honest. The build-quality is great, the design is fabulous (in my opinion), it's the first phone I've owned that didn't require MAX volume to have a reasonable phone call, and the list goes on. I *really* like this phone. A lot.
That said, the camera has......issues -- and mainly with "focus", as far as I can tell -- perhaps also with white balance. Is everyone else seeing this? I returned to the AT&T store, tested an in-store phone (black, instead of cyan, which I have) and the issue was the same: open the built-in camera app, press on the screen to focus on something, snap the photo, and it comes out slightly out-of-focus. Strangely enough, the front-camera doesn't have this issue.
Wow.
Fortunately, it appears to be a "software issue", since I was able to grab another camera app -- SophieCam (which is pretty cool) -- and take *great* photos from the exact same phone. Here are two examples -- and in both cases I touched on the top of the shifter knob so that that would be the focus point.

(Taken with the built-in camera app. You'll notice that it appears to focus on everything *except* for the shifter knob, which is what I selected as the focal point.)
(Taken with the SophieCam camera app. You'll notice that the shifter knob is *very* much in-focus, and looks great -- aside from being grubby )
So...is everyone else seeing this issue? Any fixes for it, aside from waiting for Nokia to resolve it? Thankfully, I trust that Nokia *will* fix the problem...but I hope it doesn't take too long. It seems that others are reporting this on Nokia Support, but my photos are a far cry from the awesome ones posted on this page.
Please...hurry up and fix this, Nokia!

You'll also note the blue-ish tint in the first photo, and the more "natural" look in the second photo (taken with SophieCam). The second photo is more true to what it should be.
second pic is 1000x better. its amazing that universal software comes out better than the "finely tuned" nokia camera software...what a joke! can u snap some more pics with that sophiecam? I am on the edge of buying a 900 and the camera is my biggest concern at this point!
you do know there is a "macro" mode for taking close ups on the stock camera app....
To the OP: does SophieCam allow you take pics at 8mp?

I absolutely agree that the camera appears to have issues on the Lumia 900. Compared to my Samsung Focus S, both the front and rear camera on the Lumia 900 are awful. I'm assuming that this is a software related issue as well. Comparing the built-in camera software between the Lumia 900 and the Focus S there are a lot of things that appear to be missing or that just don't work in the Lumia 900.
Here's one for you...
Open the camera and try changing the ISO setting... Does anything actually change for you? I see the phone blink for a second but the ISO level NEVER actually changes. The white balance also doesn't appear to be working quite right. Most of the test pictures I've taken appear to be more red then I think they should be.
I'd like to know what others see when they do the following...
Open the built-in camera app and zoom in all the way on an item and what do you see? I can tell you that when doing this on the Lumia 900 that I have the image is horrible blurred/pixelated (even after focusing). Now I know its digital zoom and I understand what that does but compared to the Samsung Focus S the image quality is horrendous. I'll post pics below for you to see the comparison of full zoomed between the two phones.
Nokia Lumia 900 - Full Digital Zoom 1
Samsung Focus S - Full Digital Zoom 1
I have uploaded more pictures comparing both full digital zoom and ISO levels between these two devices on my server at the link below.

Camera app is the one that has very little customization room for venders. In fact since the 3rd party app is working fine, it means the driver is ok and what's wrong is probably in the latest 8117 OS build.
Here are a few more photos...
(Normal mode, built-in camera app)
(Macro mode, built-in camera app)
(SophieCam camera app)
Strangely, the "normal mode" photo with the built-in camera app performed *fairly* well in this case, but the SophieCam snapshot is noticeably better.
To answer a couple of other questions:
1) YES, I know what macro mode is, and these pictures didn't require that. I would appreciate it if you'd give other forum members the benefit of the doubt that we're not complete idiots.
2) While SophieCam is free, it does not appear to take photos in full resolution. Bummer. That said, it's fun to use, and is really intended as an Instagram-type photo app -- quickly uploading "filtered" photos to Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr.
I do wish I'd done more testing before the latest update, since I don't know if things have gotten worse or better since. I'd also like to know how widespread this issue is. Everyone? Just some? Earlier phones only?

"Yes", it's discouraging to see camera issues at this point, but I'm hopeful about two things: 1) it's only a software issue, since another camera app can take wonderful photos using the same hardware, and 2) Nokia *will* fix this problem. They actually care about supporting their phones, supporting the camera quality, and they know that the company is riding on a successful WP7 rollout. They WILL make this right. Question is...how quickly?
Umm there was a post either here or in a review where they determined Macro is a must even when not taking close-ups, and had various other recommended settings. I entered those and my pics have been better since then. All pics seem to be more in focus with Macro on. I know it shouldn't be that way, but it seems to be at the moment.
I should mention I haven't yet taken any true Macro pics though, so I can't speak for those.

you guys should tweet Damian, he is head of imaging @ Nokia and he e a really cool guy.. always responds to camera problems. I am sure they are working on a some camera updates. The hardware in the L900 is capable of more, than what the software allows it to be right now.

The problem for Nokia is that they have to switch from their own platform where they have full control, to a controlled OS where they don't have the access, nor the expertise to make a real difference, at least not yet. It will take a while.

I don't have a Twitter account -- and I'm not going to create one just for this -- but I'd certainly appreciate it if someone else could send him a tweet, maybe reference this thread, and then see what he says.
Yes... Nokia doesn't have the control they used to, but we're not talking about being BETTER WITH THE CAMERA than everyone else (like we know Nokia ought to be), we're talking about simply taking nice-quality photos without having things focused incorrectly. The Lumia 900 *ought* to be able to do that right now, and it just doesn't. Yes, they'll fix it, but it shouldn't be an issue at all.
Here is another related thread from Nokia Support. Specifically, they talk about the camera "trying to focus", and then bumping back to some sort of preset. I've seen this *exact* behavior, as the camera appears to focus properly, and then just before taking the photo it either bumps OUT OF FOCUS or decides to focus on something else entirely. Very strange.

Ok the link was posted by XDA user shiftF7 in this thread here. Specifically this post.
The link goes to his review here.
Also, I've normally found if people figure out what ISO and Exposure do and how it relates to the photos they're unhappy with, they can make situational adjustments. That's not going to help the auto-unfocus issue and general graininess of Marco distance photos, but maybe it can help for the time being until Nokia comes out with a tweak in an update, which I'm sure won't be far away. My pictures generally do look better after reading that thread. YMMV

And ya, it sucks that the camera app/drivers are not doing a good job.. at least we know it isn't the hardware, which would be worse.
Here is GSMarena's take on it, they are usually pretty good when it comes to camera testing..

"The Lumia 900 captures decent photos with accurate colors and good contrast. The amount of resolved fine detail is not among the best we've seen and there's also lots of noise when viewing the photos at 100% zoom. Still, the Lumia 900 has accurate white balance and the dynamic range is as impressive as it was on the N9 and the Lumia 800. As a result, images from the camera look pretty well when not zoomed at 100% so if you are not pixel peeping as we are, you will be perfectly alright with what comes out of the camera"

.
Hello there, dear friends and ZL users, fans and haters.
Sadly, there are lots of threads on the ZL forum (and other places on the web) talking about the different hardware failures
our phone has to offer, such as dead batteries, cracking noise on the mic, dead pixles on the camera, flickering displays,
proximity and other sensors not working, LEDs not flashing and phones that just don't want to boot from the very first day.
Personally, I've never had any of those faults even though I consider myself a power user, flashing roms, kernels and mods
on a daily basis, playing around with voltage levels and even taking the whole device apart.
I've got the phone since may last year and it's still running like it should. A few friends of mine also own the ZL and they
didn't experience any hardware problems neither.
So I'm asking myself why there are so many faulty devices out there..
I would love to see some ideas and opinions about the actual hardware and how Xperias could/should develop in the future,
read some stories about your experiences with the phone and the Sony warranty service.
What do you think about the look and feel?
Are things like cameras, buttons and sensors placed in the right corners?
Any thoughts on material and build quality?
Why did you buy it and would you buy it again?
How should a possible ZL successor be for you to buy it?
What functions would you like to see in future Xperias that others already have?
..etc..
There might be some Sony folks out there who actually read xda forums and who knows..
Please also post some infos like device model, the rom you're running, BL and root status and where and when you've bought it.
.
Mine:
- Xperia ZL C6503, bought at a store around the corner (Germany) in may 2013
- running PAC-man rom (2014.01.22 nightly)
- BL is unlocked
- got root access
- voltages back to normal
- hardware problems: none so far. (well, there is one single tiny dead pixel on the display, but its so small I can't really see it)
For me it had to be a phone that can handle LTE traffic and it should have a non-glass back and a dedicated camera button.
Honestly, I don't understand why it is so hard for those companies to attach a camera button to their devices..
Coming from Galaxy S3, I wanted a whole new design (and sony did a good job here!) and a phone without an EFS-partition
that could accidentally be deleted running my phone useless..
So it had to be the ZL, but I had concerns from the beginning as the ZL was released at the same time as the Z and there
was almost no publicity for the ZL on the media. I knew sooner or later Sony might abandon the ZL.
The only thing I really don't like, is the non removable battery (that's a plus for Samsung).
Your turn.
Hmmm...
Mine:
- Xperia ZL C6506, bought via the Bitcoinstore November 2013
- running 0.101 stock
- BL is unlocked
- got root access
- No hardware issues to date.
Basically the ZL was a target of opportunity. My wife was having all sorts of difficulties with her Samsung S2, and I bought this thinking she would like it (one of her biggest complaints was the lack of a camera button...) turns out she liked touchwiz more than she missed the camera button... oh, and the S3 screen's brighter (wider viewing angle, deeper blacks, etc)... so I swapped... and this is a faster phone, I personally like it better than the S3. The viewing angles do bother me if I'm trying to use my phone while it's laying on a table... (if the brightness is lower)... I personally find the images it takes decent. I miss the excess of developers... the ZL seems to have a few developers, but most of those are primarily using another device and therefore aren't as invested in keeping things going on the ZL - and I'm not much of a developer... (don't have the hardware to monkey around for fear of hosing my primary phone).
My Turn:
- Xperia ZL C5606, Won at a launch event March 2013
- Running AOKP 2/8/14 Nightlie, but bounce between AOKP, CM and Omni.
- Using allspark's kernel with double tap to wake (best feature ever!)
- Unlock BL
- Rooted
- Hardware issue: Numerous dead pixels in my camera!!
I actually ended up winning this phone at a launch even in Toronto (Canada) back when I worked for Rogers, Canadas largest (and most criminal) company. Before this i had the LG Optimus G. That was basically the same phone (same processor, ram and GPU setup), but I gotta say it was a nicer phone physically. It also had a MUCH nicer display, even though it was only 720P. But the camera on the Optimus G was GARBAGE!! Anyone ever use the Nexus 4 camera? Ya, its the same one. Also the back of the LG was cracked when i bought it, which that phone had a problem with. But for 100$ it was a steal! I kept the ZL over the G for the camera quality, and expandable storage.
Little did i know that the camera on the ZL would crap out on me too! It workse fine, but i have a BOATLOAD of dead pixels in my lens, you'll see in my pic. Otherwise Im happy with the ZL. I love the screen to bezel ratio also, another reason i kept it. Also, sony developer world is fantastic about releasing source code, so we get support from all the major players like Cyanogenmod, AOKP, P.A.C and OmniRom, all officially, not just ports. The picture included is just a shot of my comp screen with a blank white word doc. I tried to get it out of focus so the dead pixels show up more.

ZL was great
Mine is as you can see on my signature. ok
Honestly...
ZL is my dream device after i have xperia L, and couple month later, i bought this ZL on januari 2014 with enthusiastic n happy.
until now, so far so good n no hardware fault or error.
I dont like from ZL is two :
1. the non removable battery.
2. placement of the front camera, why "sony" have to put there.
that's my opinion of my ZL.
thanks.

I've never really dealt with Sony warranty service, but when I went to buy my ZL from a Sony Outlet Store the customer service was pretty awesome. I've since gone back and bought an Xperia Tablet Z (which I sold recently) and an Xperia Z Ultra (to take the place of the XTZ as my tablet).
Why did you buy it and would you buy it again?

I originally bought it because I wanted to switch back to Android after a year of Windows Phone use. I ended up deciding to go with Sony because of how awesome they've been as far as working with the open-source development community. I went with the ZL because it supports LTE on T-mobile and because I liked the reviews. Considering that I bought a second one (my first has bootloader unlock allowed: no), I'd say it's true that I'd buy it again.

My turn, very simple brief
Nothin is bothering me so far. Used it for ova a year. Stock no root. Just minor prob which i can live with :
1 . Not dead pixel but lense problem
tiny little dots. Only when snap picture
(not that obvious)
2. 2secs delay on wake up. ( after the latest update). Ima wait for upcoming updates that maybe can sort it out. ( hopefully )
No other problems or watsoever.

Dude, I will lol who I want when I want "ova" what I want, LOL
I won one of these devices back in March, BEFORE the official launch date.
Mine came DIRECTLY from Sony.
And they said they couldn't ship it until the Official launch day of April 1st.
Im not calling you a liar, I just wanna see a receipt
I unfortunately have some problems with the camera - namely a black dot that appears in all images I take with it like this one:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mlrswlsy3jnfw12/DSC_0015.JPG
I contacted Sony about it, awaiting an answer now to see if it's covered by the warranty.
I am also using the stock rom and I am rooted - Additionally, the Compass seems to mostly not work.

Thats sweet.
Those bastards wouldn't send me mine until Apr 1st.
I was at a pre-release event in March, and they had a bunch of demo units, but said they weren't the final product, and that they had some bugs.
Either they were full of crap, or maybe they were 502 units, which don't have the LTE bands needed for my country (Canada).
I never thought to check the build or unit number back then because I didn't think about them releasing different variants.
Wheres the speaker grill located on your unit?
I've seen some pics floating around of pre-release units that have the speaker grill on top of the camera rather than the side. Looks way better.

Oh right,
speaking of that, mine is not an LTE version. They were duin some pre released and some sort of competitions. I wasnt aware of zl untill my sgnote gave up on me. Never had sony in my mind anyway. At the same time saw my friend hes a phone distributor. Sold the unpack zl which im using now. I guess mine is the earlier version or some sort of demo version which i did not aware of. But, its funny tho, that my speaker grill is on the right side of the lense. I guess they shipped out different version for different country for warranty purposes.. Im not too sure

An interesting thing happened to me recently. The faulty battery problem killed my phone right after I finished installing the .569 update. I won't bore you with the details of the symptoms since it's been covered extensively here. Needless to say, I had to call up Sony for a warranty service repair. Luckily I am running bone stock and had no worries about being covered or not. I sent the phone in to their service center and got my phone back 10 business days later.
They replaced:
Battery
Battery connector
Front assembly
Battery ground
All buttons
Misc. screws
Speaker cover
Mic cover
Misc. adhesives
It's funny because they replaced almost all cosmetic parts except for the back cover and SIM/SD card door.
*** I should warn all users who are thinking about officially unlocking their bootloader or opening up your phone to hold off on doing anything that would void your warranty. You never know what can go wrong with the phone. ***
As for the phone, I think it's one of the best on the market. The 4.3 update made it much smoother and more enjoyable to use. I no longer mess around with custom ROM all the time. I find that stock is best for what I need to phone to do. I need the thing to be rock solid stable; it is a tool to get my work done so I need everything to work. Is it perfect? No. Nothing is, but stock is the most stable. The skin is feature rich enough without being bloated. It is more charming than pure Android.
I had to use my old Galaxy Nexus while the ZL was out for repairs. The difference was so noticeable that I am very happy to be back using the ZL. The Galaxy Nexus would stutter at the most simple tasks if I've been using it heavily. The home screen would blank out and have to redraw constantly. The ZL has been more cooperative when it comes to being able to handle a heavier workload. I recently bought the Xperia Z1S for my brother, and that thing is a beast. It can handle more tasks without slowing down. The speed difference is less noticeable than the Galaxy Nexus to the ZL, but I wouldn't complain if someone bought it for me.
My next phone will be a waterproof one for sure. I like Sony's design language and skin so I think I will stick with them. I don't think I will buy a new phone anytime soon though, but if I were, I would look for something that is similar in dimensions to the ZL with all the features of the waterproof ones.

HTC One M8s - Support?

Hey Folks,
with the new upcoming HTC One M8s (basically just the M8 but with the 615 SoC), I was wondering how big the support would be.
Assuming HTC releases the Source Code for the Kernel, it should be rather easy porting ROM's from the M8 to the M8s, or not?
Thanks!

I hope there will be tons of custom roms. It nearly seems that almost noone has noticed that the phone has been released. I'm receiving it tomorrow and there are still no reviews available of any kind. Just a commercial picture from the front side in GSMarena, wrong colors in Anandtech and one unpacking video in youtube. I think that this tends to change, since M9 does not bring that much on the table. M8s has barometer, dual camera and lots of cheaper price. It has also a lot of cores to bump up and will have tons of customers for its 2/3 price, compared to M9. So I really hope there will be some unlocking and rooting threads here and also some cool ROM-s to bump it up to speeds that htc won't bother themselves.
Faulty soft or faulty specs
I now discovered that no app can find the barometer from the phone. Also, irda sensor. So either the specs, the initial software or my phone is faulty. Please report if your phone misses these features also.
Also for reference, I am attaching screenshot from HTC homepage with the specs:

Why isn't there dedicated device thread for the M8s?
I would also like a dedicated M8s thread. Interested in purchasing one but want to know how the camera compares to standard M8 with 13mp, seems to be very little info on this handset. If anyone has the phone could you let me have your thoughts. Searched the Internet and nothing as per previous user mentioned, very low key release.

I posted a review on phonearena, I'll just copy it here and modify a bit :
I ordered this phone after a long taught, over should i order M9 or M8s. The cost difference was 1/3.What could we get for the 1/3? I was disappointed, that M9 only had one back camera, also it doesnt have a barometer. The camera is not important to me, except the slow motion. M8s and M9 both shoot 720p 120FPS slow motion, so no difference there. Add dual camera and barometer to find out the winner.
It seems that I am the only one in the world that got one. There are no real reviews or review videos. There are next to nothing forum posts available. I haven't seen any promotions even on htc facebook page. There are plenty for different Desire models and M9 for sure though. Even GSMArena tells that this phone will be released in may. Well I boguht it 2 weeks earlier.
The phone itself feels new. Its not like an Apple watch that does everything you expect that a smartphone does. There are a lot extraordinary. Forinstance the dual camera. Its something that gives you so much different device tha a standard smartphone. I like to have depth information in my photos. I can select the person in the photo with one touch to make their background like a drawing, or the other way around, to make the person as drawing and the background real. And this is just one feature. There are tons of things one can play around with such cameras. Also there is the slow motion feature with 120fps 720p recording. The slow motion videos are vivid and smooth. Just like proffessional, highly expensive slow motion shots you can see on Discovery. Just type in "slow motion htc one" to Youtube search box and see for yourself. You can play around with slow motion videos all day and never get bored for years.
I like seamless features. HTC was the first who introduced putting phone into silent mode when you placed the ringing phone face down on table. It also understands, when its taken out of pocket and rings quietly, for there is no need to scream anymore and you can have your dignity when in public spaces, in the worst case, hospital or cinema.
The phone itself feels very solid, like a future Star Trek device. It feels like it could never break (unlike the iBreak ). And the screen, ofcourse you can't distinguish pixels. Its like curves are curves. Amazing. It has FullHD resolution.
There are some downsides though. I don't know if it is a software issue or the phone is faulty, I cannot get one main feature to work, that was one of the reasons that i actually got the phone instead of M9. M9, as we know, lacks the barometer. This is not the case for M8s. I cannot get mine to work. The same issue goes for infrared. Whatever app I try, they do not see my IRDA.
I contacted htc support with the issue, they contacted me back and told me that there is no such hardware on the phone as IRDA or barometer. The specs are faulty and if I want, they could change it to the M8.
I'm not sure I want a M8. I mean I carried my Sensation Xe around for one extra year just because of the underpowered camera of it. So I'll be discussing other options on monday. Discount forinstance. I have fell in love with the tremendous battery capacity of the phone. The phone is blazing fast (I don't game, except for some Heroes of Might & Magic II port) and It seems like the battery is infinite. So I think I'll keep it. Its just that I feel a bit conned by the missing hardware. I was hoping to play around with it.
If you like any more information then Just ask, I can test anything. Here is a little camera sample:
Some 3D effects you can do, when you use duo-cam to make photos:
Slow motion movie sample (re-encoded to 360p by youtube, ofcourse. I don't know why I cannot get it to 720p in youtube. Maybe it is because the video is 768x432 pixels)
(Note that there is even more slowed-down part in the end that is made by youtube video editor and the slow motion clip)
The highest quality FullHD video that I have made was about this young cat we foud and is looking for a new home, anyone?
Don't be shy with the thanks, if you found anything helpful.
Thank you very much for comprehensive reply :good:. More real user experience information than I've managed to find anywhere else! Sounds promising although concerning about issues you highlighted.
Is the general interface fast, is there any slow down with snapdragon 615 chipset?
If you could share some low light pictures with and without flash that would also be appreciated.

Hi, I own it since one week(no rom change) and i cannot use the Ir beam too.
Like other apps, anymote smart remote doesn't work and cannot reord ir code.
IR remote says that it doesn't support HTC IR interface...
The US HTC support confirmed me that the m8s contains an ir beam, but i think that we have to wait for a radio update...
I also have power issu with the radio, since the last sense update it seems to be better, but it's strange. Too be verified....
I hope that we will have a dedicated thread too, this phone is well hidden in google search

I just hope that something is mising in the rom...
The Ir function help me to buy this phone , not having it would be bad HTC image.

M8 has the same black plastic on top, but interestingly the IR is in the power button.
Some sites say it has it, some say it doesn't. Once htc support says it has one, once that it doesn't. Some users say it doesn't have ir though.(for example look above) - Not only this gives htc a bad image, they don't even know their own phone specs.

There should be I have this phone and would say it's not a downgrade on the m8 ,camera is better bigger battery two important factors in a phone for me and the soc 615 is only a fraction slower in some day to day use
Hello Guys, anyone knows a good case for M8s ? I am thinking for the Spigen Armor for M8 but because m8s is a little bit thicker I don't know if it fits . any solutions please?
Didnt knew there was m8s >.>
That was a very informative post! Thank you. I have a request for you and or those who have an M8S. I am working on replacing my M8 4MP camera with an M8S 13MP camera. In order to get it to work, I'll need the "lib" folder from the M8S. This folder is located at /system/ of your device. If one of you could copy the "lib" folder, paste it elsewhere, then upload it for me, I would be wildly appreciative!

Is there a dev project planned for M8s device ? there is still a Rom Version .. but it seems that no further support is running for this rom and M8s is a nice device..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/make-custom-recovery-htc-one-m8s-t3114245
There is an unofficial Cyanogenmod development going on at http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/htc-m8s-cyanogenmod-t3142668
So if you are interested go and show your support.

Hello. I know this may be an outdated thread, but i'm having an issue with my M8s. After a period of, about, 7 to 10 days of using the device, the ui starts lagging and it's really annoying.. The only solution i've found is to restart the phone when the lag gets worse. Is anyone able to help me?

[Discussion] HTC 10 User Opinions and Reviews

Devices will be shipping this week and some lucky people have one already. So if you have an HTC 10, please give us your first impressions and thoughts about the device. Tell us about the display, camera, battery life, audio, build quality or whatever else comes to mind. If you've had any problems, we'd also like to know about that too. Unboxing pics are encouraged
Let's avoid lengthy discussions about particular topics here and leave them to their dedicated threads, ie for camera, battery, audio, etc.
Also, discussion about published reviews should go here.
So, who will go first?
I ran out of RAM! All 4GB filled.

I was just listening to some music, downloading stuff via Chrome. Download a Video via DsFile, downloading GFX bench GL dataset.
And while switching between these apps and reading on XDA I realised that my downloads would be interrupted because the app got sent into cache....
If the onePlus 3 has 6gb RAM I might consider selling my 10.
Edit: might be due to Boost+ SmartBoost feature....
Deactivated it now. Let's see how it goes.
The more the phone utilizes the RAM the better.. I'm glad to see it's literally guzzling it to keep apps in RAM, faster multitasking you know.
HTC probably utilizing zram as well, can anyone confirm that?
How is call quality and loudness?
Alright guys & gals, Verizon is already shipping the 10 and HTC pre-orders for the US are going out tomorrow. I really want to hear from you what you think of it when you get yours

Got my vz 10 this afternoon. Usual bloat. Phone is heavy, camera lags. I think my 5x is faster and my s7 takes way better pics. Not seeing it worth the money so I am returning it.
Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I'm using an unlocked white/silver UK model on Tmobile network at the moment, and it works beautifully. Figured it'd work since prior I used an unlocked Compact Z3 that supported pretty much the same bands. I'm loving this phone. The responsiveness of the screen is probably one of the most underrated features that I love. On prior phones, especially my Z3 compact and sometimes my LG G3, the phones felt like they didn't always want to register my touches, but this is an entirely different story with this phone. In terms of screen brightness, I actually think it's pretty bright. I'm in California with clear whether and lots of sun, and I'm able to see outside with my phone pretty brightly. The auto brightness is kind of finicky though so I tend to turn it off and just max out the setting when I'm outdoors. It seems a little brighter than my LG G3 and maybe slightly less than my Note 3.
Audio is such a pleasure on this device. I got the Hifi headphones with mine, and they're a bit bass heavy, but I'm still enjoying listening to a lot of different music. I've only played a little bit with the front and downward firing speakers. They seem loud. Nothing insane, but it seems a lot more clear than the single downward firing speaker on my Note 3 and G3. It feels a bit louder than the dual front facing speaker system I had on my Z3, but the IP certification on those always made the noise seem kind of muddled compared to the HTC 10.
I updated my phone right away to the latest update, so I haven't experienced any wifi issues.
I only toyed with the camera a little, but it seems impressive from what I've seen. I've played with an S7E a bit, and yeah, it doesn't seem as fast, but to be honest, I'm not sure I care as long as the quality is there, and it seems to be.
No complaints. Just a little pleasure. I'm doing a lot of gaming on it right now and using Boost+ to minimize resolution. The phone stays a lot cooler than my Note 3 and G3 by a pretty long way.
One peeve I do have is that the glass is curved a bit more than I was anticipating so when I received my glass screen protector, I thought to myself,
"Wow, this looks a lot smaller than I thought it would be," but as I applied it, I realized the screen protector was still too big and there's some left surrounding the edges where the phone is. I don't know if there will ever be a screen protector that goes all around, but I also don't like the idea of not having tempered glass on my screen protector.
It's just such a lovely phone. I've gone through a lot of phones over the years, but this one is special.

I just got my HTC 10. Evidently a bit early. I pre ordered on VZW and paid $14 for noon delivery on the 5th. I was shocked to see it show up here today. If I had been home, I would have gotten it even sooner than I did.
I'm looking forward to everyone's thoughts and impressions. I'm just now getting to unbox it.

Call quality is great, you'll have a bit harder time to match the earpiece to your ear because of the smaller speaker grill, but once there it's excellent
For those that have it how does it feel in the hand for one handed use? One of things that's concerning me a little. Its not the smallest of the 5.2" phones and I wish it was.
Played with one a few weeks back but it was so briefly I don't remember much lmao
Oh and hows the front camera for things like snapchat?
What's the notification light like? Is it RGB?
Usually it' so tiny on a HTC phone.

I did take a pic of it in the box with the lid off, but that is pretty generic.
The following are my opinions only:
I've been using the phone for a few hours. I feel the one handed use is better than the LG V10.
The camera is good enough for me. Snappy, little lag. But I'm not a professional, nor do I buy the phone to take professional quality pics.
Phone quality - Great. We never talk about it. Crisp and clear. Good connections. I like it.
Almost no bloat. I mean seriously. Where is it. There are a few things on it that can be removed. Games etc. But its not overpowering like some other flagships I've played with.
I refuse to talk about battery life until I've used the phone for 3 or 4 days and stop touching it like the damn nerd I am.
Overall - At this point I'm lovin it. Especially since I got it early. LOL.
@ufkal, you get 10 bonus points for having XDA on the screen behind the box Don't use them all at once

Any chance you have someone near that has a activated Verizon sim, and can test if it works for the Unlocked 10? Many of us would be very grateful!
For those who have just gotten their 10, have you been able to do a system update? I "Check for new system update" in settings, and the phone just sits there, checking for new software. please wait. . For real I'm at 8 minutes right now, so I'm guessing its not working.

I think I may have found my first "complaint" with the phone. and its more with the software. And probably with me not knowing what I'm doing.
I use my phone for work and personal. So all my work contacts are in a group. On previous devices I could assign a ringtone to a group, so I would know if the incoming call was from work, or from one of the kids on the team I coach etc. you follow?
I do not appear to be able to do that with this particular device. I can assign individual ringtones. But that would take hours......
So. unless I'm missing something pretty basic. My first complaint...

It's working on two colors and using light flow lite I could only get green and yellow as usual. Maybe needs kernel mod as there's some rumor it's capable of rgb.
But anyway the LED is bigger than on m9 or m7
Much easier to notice

Cheers.
I don't want to have to mod to get RGB. HTC why do you not just fit one as std.

St. Louis as in St. Louis in Missouri in USA? Is the update actually available in the USA?
1.30.xxx.x has been available in Europe + Asia (EMEA) but it was said that the 1.30.xxx.x would arrive in USA end of this week.
I'm trying to remember whose tweet that was or where I read it but can't for the life of me find it right now.
