Improving visibility of the notification led - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I know could be a weird post but, did someone know if there's any way to improve the notification led, via hardware?
Because it's placed inside the upper audio speaker, I was wondering if a very small cilinder of palexiglass, or fiber or something similar could be inserted inside the corrispondent hole, perpendicular to the led axis. I would also be willing to make a very small hole in the audio speaker just to provide a better way to insert this hypothetical optical stuff (see screenshots). This shuold bring up the led-light on the external surface of the phone, allowing you to see it even at short distance from the phone.

PS
Please don't reply "change you're phone", thanks

It is possible, but unlike on the M8, where you can just pry open the speaker grills, on the M9 you have to disasemble the whole phone to get to them.
Just get a new phone. ??
Or take a small drill screwdriver and make the hole larger. (Just kidding. Don't do this.)
Yeah... There is no practical way of making the led bigger or brighter

If you have one of those go for it.
Try to make the hole a little bit wider, but not too much that it looks bad. If a lens would be there, it would kinda make it look like it came like that from factory.
Or i dunno. Just put the itty bitty tiny lens in the already existing hole without making it larger.
The front plastic plate is really hard to replace.
You decide. Make it subtle or make it obvious.

The factory holes for the audio speakers are too small imo (seems half a millimeter, or something like that). It's almost impossibile to find a lens with that measures, but... making a larger hole which also includes the other closer holes could be an option. This also shuold increase the visibility of the notification led, bringing on the surface the light.
In the screenshot I supposed 1 mm, but I think they would be better 2, also to have ease in finding the lens.

I've just measured it and the space between 4 holes is 1mm^2.
But i think you could break a 2x4 grid to still keep the symmetry.
And above the 2 lenses you could fit inside the 2mm^2 hole, you could superglue put a small piece of glass to make it look "official".
I've attached 2 photos. One with possible scenarios.
And the other one with my already broken holes from another phone, which i edited poorly to look like there are only 2 rows broken (the actual phone has a 4x4 hole there, which im gonna attach anyway, because why not.).

Yes, thank you for the screenshots. I was thinking about somenthing like in the second screenshot. Preferibly the 2x4 holes, but that it's way more difficult to do bore because it's not a rounded hole, and also i guess it's difficult to find a square lens instead of a rounded one. Anyway that's it, you got it  Of course must be very careful not to broke the upper audio speaker, which is one of the best features of this phone.

Now you should just find a good way to do this.
I think there are cheap M9 front plates on Aliexpress for you to test on them.
Here is my inexperienced sollution.
Try filing down the connection points, until the middle part breaks off, then file the plastic excess. (Like with an electrical file with one of those precision heads. I dunno how they are called)
And about the lens, why not use 3 of them?
Put one right above the led. One next to it and one above both. Then seal them with a drop of clear epoxy. (Gray = front plate plastic, blue = epoxy, white = lens, orange = how the light might disperse)
Because i dont think people can (or want) make only one custom recangular lens.
But the most useful thing would be a tiny fresnel lens. But i think it might be impossible to make such a small one.

Hey all. So long time i come back to post here for a small update. Well, after scrubbing (manually, with a hand-cutter) a bit around the hole where is situated the led, I can confirm that the overall size of the led it's much bigger than it looks at the fist sight. Also, by doing this the led angle view is more wide, you can cleary see it also if you spin the phone by is vertical axis (the diameter of the hole it's around 3mm now).
Now I have to plug the hole by putting a very small lens, but I'm not finding yet for the moment.
I made a short video. I know, it's dark because the need to focus on led, of course, anyway, look at the angle of the phone when it's spinning around You can cleary see the led. Once the lens where puttin over should be further visible because shuold bring the brighness on the surface level :good:

Bad back cover quality?

I just notice of mine and two of me friends' TP2 ,
the back cover is designed so badly....
it is easily snapped off, even when i just tried to push the power button, me hand pushed the back cover in a way it would open
the snap part of the phone, that is, in the middle of each side, when the back cover snapped, it blows the size in such a way i was afraid it will break, and leave an empty spot. not so sure if this is a defect coz it also there on 2 of me friends'
so, is this a design flaw? or we were just getting bad units?

Hi!
i have the same problem!
my back cover "automatically" open when i do a little pressure on it, and when i close it the upper border-plastic is not at the level of the phone....mmmm
BAD HTC!!!
i wondered if it was only my problem...but probably not!
sorry for bad english, tryed to explain at my best
Hmm very strange. Mine is actually very tight, i had to apply quite a lot of force to make it go off the phone. The photo looks to me as if some of the internal holding clamps are not shifted into place when you closed the phone.

i second that, it should be holding firm but so far i saw other 2 with exactly same problem, now 3
i had exactly the same problem...
the cover went off really easy anche the 2 sides were not in place..
the problem is in the small tooth in the lower side of the rear cover, near the usb port...
it's too tight and prevent the cover from sittin in place..
i just cut away an half millimeter from that small pieceand now the cover is in place firmly

u cut it off? oh man, am i really that brave enough for this expensive phone?
how do you know its because of that small tooth anyway? is it because when you press the bottom part of the back cover it makes a squakey sound?

i didn't cut off all the tooth...just a slice...to make is thinner...
i tought about that for a week and finally trying and retrying i took the cutter and did it...
i noticed that if i put in place the rear cover not sliding it, but pushing it in place from the corners, it fited right, but the bottom part could not snap in place because of that piece of plastic...
slicing it down really carefully did allowed the back cover to snap in place
the sides of the cover now are almost in place....the bump is still there but is really not noticeable now...

i gained the bravery lookin at htc online shop....30 euro for a spare back cover.....i decided to try...the worst thing it coul happen is that the cover is loose and i need a spare one....not a big amount of money...
Same problem with my phone.. (Poland) but I am not so brave to cut something that I bought for over 500 euros. I gave it back and waiting for the HTC replay.
Does anybody know if they are concerning it as a product failure and replacing it?
I guess as always it depends 2/3 on your negotiation skills if the manufacturer will consider whatever issue you have as a product failure. So if all you did was opening the cover for inserting a battery and sim and then closing it and it's not closing very well, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a replacement.
I don't have this problem, Mine is very tight....
Likewise, mine is nice cool too.

My cover was very tight (almost too tight...was kinda hard to get off) for the first month, but since yesterday it hasn't been fitting properly.
Kinda hard to tell what is wrong, but might have a look at the 'skimming' suggestion in the thread, although taking a knife to my phone...
Mine is tight too... I was suprised to read in the manual that you have to take the stylus out to remove the cover. No matter i was having issues at first.
Maybe it's time to start reading the damn things.
Mine was fine up until 2 days ago. Now I'm having the loose back cover issue. I cant believe I paid this much for a device and I have to consider modifying the back cover to fit properly.
After examining the inside of the battery cover (where the stylus inserts). I really don't see how not taking out the stylus would damage or bend the back cover when taking it off. Unless, you all see something I don't.

Thank you.
I pulled out my Drimmel tool and just barely cut a tad bit off that piece, I mean just a little bitty bit. Not too much. Now it fits a lot better than it did and it sits flush with the top of the phone like its suppose to. Don't get me wrong it could be tighter, but its not popping loose trying to get it out of its case.
Could you post a photo, maybe in good quality? I want to do same, but I am a little bit affraid... thx

Improve movie/pics capture

Hi,
for those who want to really improve the capture with your Desire there is a very simple trick... remove the piece of plastic which "protect" the lens from dust.
Before doing that have a test without the back cover. You should see a noticeable improvement.
With time the plastic became blurry and its not washable (maybe with toothpaste but I didn't try).
I know that it's a protective cover but the Hero doesn't have one and it seem very robust and on the Desire the lens is at least 2 to 3mm inside the battery cover. Therefore it should be quite safe except if you put it with keys or small sharp stuffs.
I tried photos with/without the rear cover, but didn't see any improvement to be fair.
Maybe your desire is brand new and the glass is still translucent. If one day you found that there is a kind of halo around white or bright area especially on stuffs that should looks sharp do the test again you'ld change your mind.
Do the test with 720p recording.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah it's a bit of a PITA to make sure that little piece of plastic is clean before taking a photo, fingerprints cause smear marks on the photos especially when using the flash..

I've attached a picture made with a small part of the plastic.
you should clearly see that the picture is altered in the bottom left part (espacially on the notebook and on the earphones) while on the right everything stay quite sharp (for a picture shot with a phone). The colors are also altered (see the lower part of the wooden desktop).

I found a big improvement, thanks. It also helps to clean the lens itself.
hehe, yes, that's a simple trick.
A couple of days ago I've also tested with about 30 shots, whether it would change by much without cover, also because my plastic protection has become strangely ... uhm ... how can I say, it seems like there is some water inside two pieces of plastic pasted together, as if the protection is formed by two sheets of plastic and some air or water leaked inside them.
But to be honest, the biggest improvement came from dismounting the back cover and clean the protector both sides very accurately. Photos taken with it weren't that different from without (for me) to justify removing the piece of plastic ... yet !
But I've also thought that I'd rather buy a new back cover for 15€ when this will happen, I'm more afraid of all the lint that will crawl inside the phone without that protection.

Yes I thinks that too
hey all,
no denying that the comparisons sample photos the difference is VERY obvious.
I think in this case the cover is scuffed or damaged. The new phone out of the box takes identical quality with cover on or off, but I agree it can get scuffed and then it leaves a smear mark on the cover that will never come off.
this happened to me after I rubbed cover but bit of sand was there and it scratched cover. Then cover basically all turned faded colour like bathroom glass! frosted.
I bought a new cover for 15euro(plus 12euro shipping) and now I do not RUB the cover hard to clean it. If I have to clean it I blow off any heavy dirt, then very gently rub a microfibre cloth on cover to remove grease and fingerprints. It's fine now 2 months. 100% clear and transparent and photos are sharp and fine.
I wish they have gorilla glass on their next camera phone cover. unscratchable except with diamond!!!
I was very skeptic about this since I keep my phone and by extension the lens very clean. But recently I noticed my photos having a distinct blur to them with a grainy over-exposed appearance, lack of detail, colour depth and sharpness. These things were present in the HTC 2.1 ROM.
So I just tried some pics and a 720p capture of the same objects with and without the cover... and you guessed it. Heh, the captures are back exactly to the usual quality I was expecting - without the cover. And looking through the lens is blurry due to a very thin layer of what looks like hand oil smeared across it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention
BTW, this difference doesn't occur with a properly cleaned lens (I have no scratches or fading on mine).

That's a fitting description to what my lens now looks like from the inside in good, clear light. You can't see any problem from the outside until you look through it, and through a clean piece of glass at the same object.

That's what I have too, like some liquid between two sheets of plastic. However I've also found that cleaning the inside of the lens solved 90% of the problem.
Now I was thinking about removing the lens, but besides the obvious risks, I would think that if the lens itself gets dirty you have to open the cover to clean it !
does anyone knows a way to perfcetly clean the plastic cover ?????? i don't want to break it at the moment!!!
use Meguires glass cleaner, works REALLY well. you can clean your whole phone with it. no ill effects.
tbh my phone is 4 months old and still the pics are perfect.

I would not use any chemical cleaner, just a new clean high quality fibre cloths.
drag it gently over the lens cover inside and out to remove any solid particles like sand or salt (well smaller but hard items). once thats done, a small bit more force (not much!!!) to remove the grease. if the cloth is high quality it will SUCK that stuff up. once its clean, just keep the phone in a pouch and be aware of handling it so you don't grease up the cover with your fingers.
Today I came accross with this issue. Inoticed problem after removing damned invisible shield. I took the cover of and looked through lens. There was horrible blur and no microfiber or even alcohol helped.. Until i found this topic.
In first post author mentioned toothpaste. It worked like a charm to me. To be honest i resurected some old dvd discs couple years ago with toothpaste. God bless toth paste it saved me ~30$ for new cover
There's a similar post to this over on androidforums, someone over there suggested cleaning the lens cover with toothpaste. Yesterday I cleaned my lens cover with 'Duzzit' metal polish, applied with a cotton bud, all the scratches have gone.
I emailed HTC support regarding the apparent lack of quality with the lens cover, they told me to go buy a replacement back cover! My Desire is less than 3 months old and has always been fitted with a gel case and kept in a pocket without anything that should be able to scratch the cover.

Slider scratching the pad?

Hello,
I've had my xperia play for a few weeks now and today I was bored and I looked at the pad in plain sunlight and noticed there are 2 "skidmarks" on the pad. They are barely noticeable though... However, since they are pararell to each other im guessing that the sliding action from the screen is the cause of the marks.
Anybody else have these? Will they get worse with time/use?
It would be nice to have a gamepad scratch protector but I couldn't find any
Here's a pic so you can see what I mean, it was hard to photograph tho.
i.imgur.com/TgKlO.jpg
Cheers
Me too. After a few weeks/months I noticed 1/2 of these. Right now after 4 or so months of use I have like 4-5 of those marks.
It's like it scratches the finger-print-proof finish/protection and shows the glossy plastic behind it. It's the same color but since it reflects light it's noticeable on most angles.
Well that sucks... I wonder why nobody has made a skin for it yet, it would give the pad a different look and protect it from this issue

True, but im not good with cutting stuff lol... I don't want it to look ugly
I might print a stencil using the front high res official renders and then cut it from there...
One of the clips on my Otterbox Commuter case made a mark right through the middle of the touch areas in only a couple days. It would've gotten nasty really quick if I didn't do something about it. I filed them off, which I had already planned to do anyway because they did not offset the clips from the top and bottom protector pieces and they would touch when fully closed preventing a smooth closing action and also forcing the two halves apart slightly when pushed fully closed. I also noticed marks forming on the long, silver, sticker that is visible from the bottom when slid open but I would recommend leaving those clips after filing them off and noticing how much more difficult it can be to manipulate the volume buttons some times. My theory was that they could have just made the whole thing a replacement battery cover but they would have to come up with an alternate way to protect this side if they did that (formed TPU material like used in a fitted keyboard skin may have done the trick).
Actually screen protector on the game pad is a pretty bad idea... when you slide it, it will start to peel off, and it may damage some components like the flex cable.

actually, I was thiking of using invisible shield pieces, since its thinner and adheres to devices reaaally well...
These scratches are "normal". When I bought the phone I got 1 scratch form the previous user. Now I have 4 scratches and 2 small holes under both sides of sticks.

Yeah i think i know what the cause is. On the back of the screen, there are 2 little plastic? pads that probably help the screen slide with a smooth motion and probably to avoid the rest of the back of the screen scratching the entire gamepad. Problem is that constant friction between the little pads and the surface of the gamepad is whats causing the wear and making it look like that...
The scratching in the middle is probably cause of the ribbon cable.
Oh well... looks like theres not much to do except to cut a screen protector or something and place it there.
Thanks for the photo though!
If it's already in friction, I don't think adding a film on top of it will help at all. If anything it'll damage it too and probably make it look messy.
I guess pressing down while sliding makes this happen quicker, but that's just the natural way to do it and pretty much can't be avoided.

Hey, just because your xperia play is now so ugly you don't even want to use it in public, it does not mean we want it to go down the same path
lol, just kidding... however I don't think adding a film such as an invisible shield which is really really thin and adheres itself to the surface would do any harm... it's military grade...I've had it on a lot of devices and it never gets scratched or torn...
We'll see... hope they fix it for the next revision or something
I just swapped out my phone at the AT&T store and I think I can feel some sliding contact on this phone that I did not feel on my last one so the usage wear and tear may vary per unit.

lol, just kidding... however I don't think adding a film such as an invisible shield which is really really thin and adheres itself to the surface would do any harm... it's military grade...I've had it on a lot of devices and it never gets scratched or torn...
We'll see... hope they fix it for the next revision or something

"Military grade" doesn't change the fact that it would obviously reduce clearance in an area that is already known to contact (no clearance) which will cause more friction. If anything, it would need to be a super-thin low-friction material to help at all. Invisible Shield is specifically marketed for it's high-friction "sticky" surface texture.
Plastic around PS buttons is very tough and hard to scratch, designed especially to be able to handle frictions with back of the part with screen. But everything has its own durability so sooner or later scratches will occur. So it's normal.
Flex cable DOES NOT scratch the plastic - I'm 100% sure, I have disassembled it so many times (see signature) that I think I know good how it's built.
The scratches are caused by the several protruding areas on the back of the screen part. It can be barely seen when brining the edge of the back close and horizontally to our eye and looking straight on the triggers, some areas are a little but rounded down to the screen, especially between both tracks and the center concave part and it's surrounded by these protruding areas.
Oh, almost forgot:

The screws are hidden under these two plastic, they aren't cause of the scratches, because they're a little bit under the main layer of the back
Sorry if anything is hard to understand, I tried to describe it as best as I could.
Peace.
thanks for your insight, however I still believe the little plastic pads I was referring to are the cause of some of the scratching, at least on my xperia play, they line up perfectly with the scratch marks.
So, my play started scratching today ; has anybody applied and confirmed the screen protector fix or has any other suggestions?
I exchanged one after a week and a half and it was not showing any of these scratches yet. The new unit showed the mark under the right analog area the next day and a long scratch beneath the screen days later. I think some have better tolerances than others.
I just swapped out my phone at the AT&T store and I think I can feel some sliding contact on this phone that I did not feel on my last one so the usage wear and tear may vary per unit.

Be wary of putting too much pressure on the flex ribbon when using the slider. Mine has become irreversibly damaged from too much friction, and now causes the back light to flicker on and off randomly. Disassembly and cleaning the cable (the black coating has begun to flake off) has helped but the backlight still acts up randomly. There is literally next to no clearance between the game pad and the screen...

How to safely add a lanyard to your Note. [Pic Intensive]

Hey guys! I posted on my blog a full explanation of how to do this, but I thought I'd share it with XDA. I saw another post of a guy who actually tied his lanyard to the actual phone grill and that made my teeth grind. I found 2 old lanyards around my house, one from an old camera and another one that Vodafone had given me with my iPhone 4 from over 16 months ago! I don't know why they gave me a lanyard, but oh well.
As you know the Note is a big phone! I love it but sometimes I feel like I'm going to drop it while one-handing it, so I decided to make this tiny tutorial. It's REALLY easy.
All you're going to need is the following:
A TPU case. (The two I got are located here and here off of eBay). They were cheap, so this is a really inexpensive project.
A needle
Tweezers
A lanyard

}
Take your TPU case and your needle and find a good location to hang the lanyard off of. Take into consideration how you'll hold it, if you like to hold it more with either your left or right hand... I'm more of a righty for just holding my phone, so I picked the bottom right corner. Also you can do the bottom right side (as seen on my white TPU case).
Proceed to stab your TPU case Don't worry, you won't hurt it. You can just take the need towards the middle or middle bottom of the case, and push through. I found it a little hard and the needle started to stick into my finger, so I just grabbed a towel and pushed it through that way, that worked fine. You could also just put a thimble on. I currently don't have one as I just moved! So towel it was.
After pushing the need through some what, you can take it out. The next step is to take your tweezers and grab the lanyard loop with the tweezers, and try and keep it as close as possible to the sharp end, if you've got a sharp end.
With the sharp end of the tweezers find the tiny hole you made with the needle and stick it through. It'll take a little force, so don't worry.
After getting it through you're going to hold onto the end of the lanyard with your finger and then let go with the tweezers and take the tweezers out. Pull the lanyard a little and you're almost done.
Put the other side of the lanyard into the loop to make a "knot" and you're done!
Attach the other end of the lanyard if you've got one, in this case I do.
And put your phone back into the case after tightening the lanyard line.
This is how it looks with the side hole, which I personally like more. But I guess it's personal preference.
And this is how it looks when I'm holding it or using it.
The TPU case is perfect for it since it's a hard rubbery silicone and doesn't rip easily. I find it really comfortable to hold now knowing that if I do drop it, or it falls there won't be an issue. I also pull it out of my jeans this way, too. I've had it like this for a week so far and there has been no additional tearing to the TPU case so I think it's a good candidate material for it.
I am not responsible if your lanyard breaks, or you end up breaking your phone. This is just something I found useful for me, and it's a lot safer for me at least.
Good luck! Take care.
Hit thanks!!!
Kent.
Very nice!
Looks like it may yank the case off if it falls while tethered?

Not at all! The phone is tightly placed inside the case. I have to apply a lot of pressure to get it out (not enough to break it). But any case that's loose isn't a good candidate to begin with.
The white and black TPU cases I used are not letting go. I wouldn't worry about that, at all
What if you made two holes on the side (instead of using one hole and the edge of the case as the "second hole")? It wouldn't impact the edge of the case then, so maybe it would have a tighter fit?
Just a thought, maybe it wouldn't work at all I have no case yet so I can't test.
Kind of strange that there is no lanyard attachment point on the note, really -- it's a device you could be particularly prone to dropping since it is so large/slightly hard to hold!

I suppose it could work, but it would really depend on the space you put between the holes. I ran it over the top because it's the thickest part of the case. I'll give the two side holes a try with my least favorite case and post back! haha.
That is pretty cool. The TPU case I bought has a reinforced lanyard hole on the lower right corner (as you look at the GNote from the back) I do not use a lanyard although I have several laying around. Do you place the lanyard on your wrist every time you use the GNote? When in your pocket is the lanyard hanging out to assist with getting it out of your pocket?

Every time? No, but it is frequently as it's also really comfortable to hold that way.
And I use it EVERY time I need to get it out of my pocket. Since the one I'm using right now is a camera lanyard, it's short. So it hides under my shirt, but with an index finger I grab it and pull it out. It's so much faster.
Kinda suprised me that capdase case didnt come with the hole already. They usually put it right above or below that red strip. That could be a better place to put the holes at as it doesnt seem so obvious that it's added on. Good guide tho

Or you can just loop the lanyard through the hole (on the case) for the mic and out the hole for the stylus, without having to make any extra holes in the case.
On ebay, you can get cheapo "S" design cases that have lanyard holes, saving you the trouble. They go for around US$3-5. I have one of these (in black) and the quality and fit is surprisingly good.

[Q] Is there anyway to disable the proximity sensor? [SOLVED]

After a call my phone screen will be black and will not turn on until i remove the battery. On CM7/9 It is disabled but I want to try a beta ICS rom. Can anyone help?
Edit: NVM disabled it by using hardware disabler

Okay. I got Hardware disabler now from play Store but what is the proximity Sensor called like?
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
EDIT: okay it is the driver called GP2AP002A00F

Thx buddy, i finally found the driver's name for proximity censor in xplay here. Got headache for looking for the name
It sounds like you are missing get the rubber shroud that goes around the sensor.
I installed a new digitizer, front frame, and a screen protector once and used the phone without issues for months until the screen protector accidentally peeled off. This happened while putting into my pocket so it ended up covered in lint and couldn't be reapplied. I tried other screen protectors, tape, Sharpie-colored tape, etc and nothing but digging out my old broken part and finding/transferring the rubber piece would restore it.

Can you share a picture of the rubber shroud? I'm having the same problem and wan't to know exactly what to look for.

I'll have to dig around and I don't know that I have one outside the phone. There is a rectangular proximity module near the speaker and front facing camera which has two optical components: an IR LED and photosensor. The sensor is supposed to pick up the reflection from the IR LED after it passes through the glass and hits a nearby surface.
When you take the digitizer and frame off, you will see a hole in the digitizer frame under the glass that covers that component. The rubber fits in this hole perfectly and may be stuck there or around the retangular proximity module. If you do not see the rubber in either place then it is missing.
The glass is probably supposed to have an IR filter there, just like iPhones. iPhone display/glass replacements often don't have the filter or don't filter as well, but the "Sharpie trick" is enough for those. Unlike iPhones, the "Sharpie trick" doesn't seem to help here... at least not without the rubber piece.

At the moment (with the phone assembled) I can see completely thought the small rectangular window on the right of the camera clearly seeing 3 circular items, so I would assume that at least one of these should be covered by the rubber? if so which one(s)?

It's an oval opening that they both see through, but I don't think the shroud is visible from outside an assembled phone. The shroud opening is also oval and may be bisected with a wall of rubber down the middle (can't recall but I don't think so). I'm still at work and don't know if I'll be able to find my parts even when I get off but I will look.

You are correct it's oval it's rectangular with rounded edges... anyway the rubber would be around this oval window? The objective of the rubber is to avoid the IR to reflect from the glass back to the Proximity sensor?

Thank You for the pictures! I will open up my phone again and look for the piece and if not found I will try and make something similar, maybe using some electrical tape or something.
