Is This Phone Worth Keeping?

I have spent a week with this SGS3 i747 and im still not sure how I feel about it. My last phone was a international HTC One X Tegra model which I loved but after an unfortunate incident I lost it so I used my upgrade to get a SGS3. I chose it over the ATT One X due to double the RAM, removable storage, bigger battery, and Samsung seems to have the edge in overall features so I gave it a shot.
Having a Tegra 3 phone, I could toss any game at it and it would play flawlessly which is not the case here. Game play ok for the most part but hardcore gameloft games have noticible lag considering such a high end device. I always had a sour taste for Qualcomm chipsets but this one gets pretty good reviews even though the GPU isnt considered top shelf anymore.
Anyway. My question is: Is this phone futureproofed enough to keep long term? I still have options since my 30 days expire on the 15th next month so I have a chance to see the Note 2, new iPhone, and Nokia WP8 announcement before my time is up. But I wanted the opinion of fellow users. What do you guys think of the S3 when it comes to long term use? Thanks
It doesn't matter what you buy. Anything will be outdated in two months to just go with what you like. Don't follow everyone else.

This.
There will always be new phones out every month i think the s3 can make it out until your next upgrade...

If you've had it and used it for the last week, you're in the best position to determine whether or not it's worth keeping! What works for one person may not work for another. So, while the opinions you may get on a forum can vary widely, the only opinion that really counts is yours!

if after a few days with the phone you are still not convinced about it, just return it and get something else. The new Nokia will be something worth looking and there is always the iPhone5.
Or sell the phone get the international one x again. Or exchange for the one x. Or save the upgrade for the iPhone 5.

you need one every 2 months or so.
I've gone through 5 phones this year, 4s, gn, note, one x, s3 and we got 4 months left in the year
If your looking for hardcore gpu and can wait maybe 3 months or so the adreno 320 will be out by then and it compares to the xbox 360 gpu, in the mean time you currently have the most sought out phone in which u can sale by then and get the latest upgrade...

The S3 is a great phone, it was/is the official mobile phone of the London Olympics. It is really popular over here.
I'm loving it on the Three network on "The One" plan, with 2000 any UK minutes, 5000 three to three minutes, unlimited texts something like 2000 texts and unlimited (yes its truly unlimitely not like AT&T where you get 3 or 5GB a month). Ive got up to 7GB and havent noticed any throttle of speed. All for around £34 a month, with no upfront fee, which is like $51 US a month, which is dirt cheap. I visited Los Angeles and Las Vegas for two weeks end of July / beginning of August, used it with a AT&T go phone microsim, was great taking photos using its 8MP and uploading them to Facebook. Using google maps with the voice navigation when the cabbie got lost and general web browising when I was out and about, the screen size is just beautiful. Although I may add AT&T coverage is a bit spotty, 2 to 3 bars in surburbs and 4 - 5 when in the city, which is crap considering I have full HSPA+ coverage in the UK wherever I go, compared to CA. But hey we don't LTE in the UK yet, while you guys have. I say stick with the phone bro, or atleast wait to the S4 next year May.

I am curious, which gameloft games in particular are you talking about? Modern Combat 3 for me doesn't lag, or maybe I am just too into the game to notice.

These guys get the placebo effect way to easy is all, they hear this one has quad core or whatever and think they must have quad as its more than dual...so many other factors in the setup. Basically know that there is not currently a better phone available , at least RIGHT NOW. But you sound like the A.D.D. type that will get a new phone in 3-6months anyways so its up to you. Then there is the type holding out on their old phone for the S4, etc. This phone will last till my next upgrade I have no doubt, and I sleep well at night not worrying about it, give it a try.

[Q] worth the upgrade from hox?

HI guys
this isnt a troll post - i just need some simple facts from owners
I currently have the htc one x that been a love hate relationship, i love the device but hate the battery life, love the screen, hate the non removable sd card, you get the picture. Htc gave quiet a bit but took too much away and im afraid that maybe my last htc device after nearly 10 years of ownership.
Anyways, im a big audiobook fan and generally have them running 24-7 with the audible app or mort etc. The htc one x cannot and dosnt cut the mustard with battery life, even just playing simple mp3s the thing is dead in about 7 hours - playing games is just sad and pathetic.
How long playback are you guys getting with mp3 etc?
I love is rpgs, and have been playing Bards tale to death on my nexus 7 (the one x will die within 3 mins lol).
I know that its not a tegra processor but are you able to play these awsome games happily on your devices- or do you need root + chainfire? and does it nuke the battery in 1mins flat or are you getting reasonable run times?
I did have a samsung gtab 1 (gt1000) for a while, i loved the machine but really didnt get on well with touchwiz, i found it to ipod cartoony, generally just a horrible experiace, htc sense seems more adult and finished.
Have they made touchwiz more polished now or is it still the same as it was back on the old gtab? (not a deal breaker as i will load a launcher but just after some info)
The last thing is the screen - how is it in bright sunlight?, i was playing with an s3 when i compared it to the one x and it looked ok (though i must admit here the one x is a nicer brighter screen but thats off the point).
My contract is up on my phone so im seriously chewing over the note 2 - looking a the specs it seems perfect, but then again so did the htc one x on paper so please give me some real world experances so i can make a informed descion this time.
Many many thanks!!
I think welshandy had a HOX and got the Note 2 he might be the man to ask.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Hi, to give you an idea, even the HTC one X+ won't be able to beat the note 2, the battery being 3100, and jelly bean, is the best combination, and if that isn't enough, you can turn of fast dormancy (only Samsung?) And you have the error option as well, and did I mention a big screen as well
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
You can turn off fast dormancy on the HOX but need to be rooted I know on Samsung devices you can do this via the key codes.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Thanks guys, i decided to take the plundge and glad i did!!!
i just got the machine this morning, not charged it yet but ran it all day (after downloading a load of app etc) and its still got 40% left!!! (started with 60%)
I must admit there are two things i dislike but i can live with
1st the screen isnt as nice as the one x, but not noticable unless next to each other, the note has a blue tint. (ducks!!)
2nd is touch wiz, its not as bad as it was back on the galaxy tab but its still not very polished, though there are some really REALLY nice features
Both are not deal breakers for me though, ive always been a htc man but this machine has swayed me - just having removable battery and memory is a big deal after the one x, im seriously not suprised that htc are having problems after making thier machine so tied down with thier hardware.
Samsung has really looked hard at the user input and taken the ethos of android to heart, just with simple things like changing fonts easily and allowing the user to alter the LEDs is a big step in the right direction.
Another thing that suprised me was the build quality, coming from htc im used to phone that a built like tanks but this baby is solid and weighs the same as the one x - how the hell did they do that with that monster battery and screen.
IM now waiting for my number to transferre over from tmobile, ive done the deed with 3 as tmobile couldnt answer any of my questions and kept putting me off, the last thing they said to me was to call monday (after i had called 4 times and told to call the next day), thier excuse for having the handset at the higher price was because of the the 4g, well thats useless to most people in the country for the time being - i will keep my money and move away after nearly 20 years with the same company. and its saved me £15 per month lol.
thanks guys!!

Quick decision: S3 vs Optimus G

Im about to get a sprint phone and i need to decide (before this friday) if i want an Optimus G or a Galaxy S3 (or an iphone 5).
Im currently on Tmobile and i just cannot wait to get rid of my HTC Sensation!
I love the specs on Optimus G: however its still on ICS and the android development on it seems dead so far :/ :\ where as on the Galaxy S3 the specs and battery life arent as good but it has a solid developer team!
What would you guys say?
ps: iphone 5 is an option just because i love to switch and try new things. it also has all the google apps i would want/need
It's really all about preference, ask yourself what is it that you want in a phone.
I choose the Optimus G over the Galaxy S3 because the hardware was amazing and I had high hopes for the community since this is a the older brother of the Nexus 4. I could not see myself buying a dual core phone when quad core phones are just beginning to come out. I was afraid the GS3 would get outdated in a couple of months if I bought it around that time frame (last month for me).
Development will be getting a lot better soon. From what I've seen and read, we are close to having CM and other ROM's for this phone. Optimus G is the way to go.
LGOG ftw. There's a reason Google picked this phone to base its Nexus 4 off of.
Get to a sprint store and try them both. I went to play around with the note 2 and before I left I asked about the LG. After I tried it out I headed over to best buy and picked one up for 49.99 (99-50 phone freedom gift card). I still think it was the best move for me. I really wanted the note 2 for the size. I'm glad I didn't since I'm still trying to adjust to the larger size of the lg (came from a nexus s).
Coming from a Note II without a doubt Optimus G over S III. Optimus G is one of the best performing and best looking phones out.
Development will pick up... Christmas break soon will help. One thing i've noticed about the OG over my ancient samsung is that the radios seem really good. GPS locks on in a couple seconds and coverage is fantastic. Samsung has traditionally had problems with their radios.

I must say, I don't really use gps alot, maybe during the golfing season, but I used it for sh*ts and giggles on
my way to my wifes work, and the Nav was dead nuts. I mean to the middle of the intersection. I am really
impressed with it. My Evo lte was never this accurate.
Go with the S3 if you can get it for .99. Honestly I would wait for the LGOG to go down the $99 (entirely possible this Xmas since it was $99 for black friday) to get all its bugs fixed, or at least until Jelly Bean comes out.
It must be the apps I'm running or the games I'm playing but the phone just gets hot all the time after game play and it starts to lag a bit...it also has issues with wakelocks that causes the battery to drain at a slightly faster pace. Hopefully they fix that bug soon. Those are my only complaints. Other than that the phone is super fast, great battery when not gaming and the screen is amazingly clear. I love the sleek square-ish design and it's ability to run anything I've thrown at it.
After owning the s3, iphone 5, and this all I can say is the hardware is in another league the materials used in the iphone are better and the camera on the others are better but this screen is great the phone is fast and our feels like more of a premium device than the s3. I am completely happy with my decision to buy this phone but your decision will be personal preference minus the 1080p screen I feel like this is what we will be the class of devices released next year. Oh and try to test the s3 in bright conditions because in my experience it was a little to dim

This. Screen is dim on the s3 in direct light. I never notice until I got the DNA. Next week I'll be getting the lgog for my gf. Feels snappier and more quality in the hand than the s3 for real. I don't know about the iPhone. I'm a dedicated fanboy
sent from my unlocked and rooted droid DNA
I noticed it because I had an evo lte prior to the and I could everything without issue outside. When I got the s3 it became more of an issue I couldn't play certain games or watch videos because the screen just wasn't bright enough. I with this phone I have no issue even without using auto brightness and the display set to 50%

Agreed,
only two complaints for me. Both having to do with heat issues. I've been doing some heavy gaming. Mostly FPS , gta, Max Payne......very graphic heavy games with eco mode on and off. Screen brightness 50% or more. Yeah it gets hot fast. Nothing to concerning though.
Second. When the phone is too hot it automatically reduces and forces a lower brightness level. Usually around 60% I've noticed. However its still plenty bright.
Other than that the phone is an absolute beast. Also with the quad core it will be better suited for up and coming apps / games.

Coming from an HTC VIVID

I am way overdue for an upgrade (AT&T family plan).
I didn't do it when the Nexus 5 came out thought I would wait for the S5 which then coincided with the M8 and did neither of those either thinking the G3 would be the best bet.
Yes I have the disease badly!
Little things bugged me eg. the battery flap on the S5 and the reduced screen size/strange shape of the M8 along with poor fit and finish of the store models I handled.
Reading here the most talked about issue of the G3 appears to be some lag reported by some folks specially when compared to the other competitors. Other than not being able to load custom Roms, everything else seems just about perfect.
Coming from the Vivid (which still performs very well) I am sure that from every perspective the G3 will totally overshadow my Vivid with respect to performance, camera, screen resolution/brightness, battery life, memory etc. etc.
I was struggling to decide if I could live with one of these new devices for the next 2 years.
I think the G3 could be the one. Go on, give me the push I need.
I would like to hear from current G3 owners.
Thanks

Wow youre still rocking the vivid. That phone was awesome. Both s5 and g3 have their shortcomings, i would suggest to wait till september and see what the note 4 is gonna be like or
The new iphone. You have waited this long might as well wait another month or so.

Haha, that's what I thought after not going for the N5, it's now a lot longer than a few months later!
I don't like the IOS ecosystem so the Iphone is not an option. The G3 is already quite big the Note 4 will be much too big.
I could have had 2 upgrades in the length of time it's taken me not to commit!
You are not the only one with the deseas lol. I waited 5 years. Came fresh from a samsung galaxy s. The first generation OG galaxy s lol

Wow... The vivid. That actually was the phone that took me away from ios. Crazy you held on to it this long. But, anyways, I left the vivid for the N4, then the N5 and now the G3. This thing is great! Root the sucker (i believe towel root works on the att variant and thats as easy as rooting gets) and freeze/get rid of bloat and the phone flies. I've also got xposed, G3 tweaksbox and greenify too.
Thanks guys, looks like the G3 will more than do the job for me.
My Vivid is now SIM unlocked so a great travel phone, just returned from 3 countries and the Vivid worked great with the respective sims.
The battery has suddenly got a bit tired. I need to buy another battery and keep this phone for when I travel.

Moto Z Play from Republic Wireless - seems like a smokin' deal - but Qs?

Hey folks,
Been on the fence for a little while between the Moto Z play and the Oneplus 3T. Both have benefits/drawbacks, but overall I'm leaning to the Z play.
Today I came across this deal at Republic Wireless -
https://republicwireless.com/phones/
$100 off retail for a Moto Z play ($350 total cost) and includes 6 months of free service on the unlimited talk/text and 1GB data plan. I really don't care about the service, as T-Mo coverage is crappy by me, but I still have an ATT plan that I plan to use the phone on anyway. I've seen some mention that republic wireless devices are 'unlocked' but I assume this means carrier unlocked. Which leads me to believe that swapping my sim out of my current ATT phone won't present any issues. However, do any of you know if Republic wireless blocks moto's bootloader unlock tool (like VZW does)? While I may not want/need root right away, one factor in purchasing a phone outright, for me, is rootability. Anyone know how to find out what model / variant number they sell?
Thanks in advance - and looking forward to jumping over to this community if/when I pull the trigger!
Dan
I'm 99% sure it's the unlocked model after looking into it. You should be able to pop your sim in and go.

Thank you for the response. I just got off a chat with a Republic Wireless rep, and here's what I was told:
1) Model number: XT1635-02 (which I believe is the standard RETUS unlocked model/variant number - so that supports your response)
2) Carrier Unlocked: Yes, the device is unlocked and usable on any compatible network (more support!)
3) Is the bootloader unlockable: First response was vague - Republic does not recommend rooting devices as it can effect the compatibilty of the republic app and impact service. When I pressed for more info, the rep responded that because Republic doesn't recommend rooting reps are not provided with that info, but he recommended I follow a link he sent. The link was to Moto's list of devices eligible for bootloader unlock. The list (as you probably know) indicates that only the Verizon version is not eligible. My interpretation of this portion of the conversation is that the rep was doing his best to say that yes it is bootloader unlockable, without actually coming out and saying that it is (probably due to company policy??).
At any rate, I think the total of the info available seems to indicate that this is indeed a standard unlockable version for a good price.
If anyone else has more info, please keep it coming...
Dan
Edit: given what appears to be a decent 14 day return policy, I decided to pull the trigger. $399 out of pocket for phone + incipio case + tax + 3 day shipping (once it comes off backorder in 1-2 weeks). I'll have to pay for one month of service ($22) before the free 6 months kick in, so overall total cost is around $390 for the phone with that month of paid service. Still $60 less than standard retail, so I'm not gonna complain. $22 for 7 months of service is a great chance to test drive T-Mo effectively and cheaply to see if it's usable for me. If so, maybe jump off the ATT ship I've been on for 15 years once my now long in the tooth S6 is paid off in April.
Looking forward to some more in-depth reading over here...
Glad you made the jump! I switched from sprint to Simple Mobile(T-Mobile) because all out of nowhere t-mobile flipped a lightning switch I'm pulling 22mb/down. I was on AT&T on my nexus 4 and it was a horrible value. Simple and Metro PCS both offer true unlimited for 60$ on T-Mobile network so I had to try and couldn't be happier! On Thursday I dropped out of service area(in the sticks) and successfully roamed data and voice on AT&T! Who knows t-mobile might have you covered? They been expanding like crazy lately. Good luck!

Good to know about simple mobile. If I can roam on ATT, I'll certainly be in no worse shape than I am currently, coverage wise. My big issue with T-Mo is their poor rural coverage - I work in remote-ish areas often, and lack of service is aggravating. AT&T is somewhat better, but I've been with them a long time so I do better pricewise than I can on VZW, which is the coverage king here in the northeast. Had stayed with ATT for a long time for the unlimited in-network mobile to mobile calling, but now just about everyone has unlimited calls, so MVNOs are much more appealing now.

That kind of INSANE battery life is the biggest single factor for me to go to the Z Play. My SGS6 on AT&T, on an exceptional day might squeak out 4 hours of SoT if I do a fairly large amount of low demand browsing in a short time - like 10 hours. It's standby battery drain is horrendous - eats like 4-5% per hour completely idle. No matter what I do, I can't get it better. On a bad day I might get home from work with 15 hours off charger, 20 min SoT, and 30% battery left. I don't really game, or do lots of high demand processor stuff, nor do I use VR, so I don't really have a need for an 821 and super high res screen. The battery life and expandable storage, along with Moto's light touch with android software pushed me towards the Z play over the oneplus 3T. The price drop was the last piece that made me go for it. I have a Moto E 2015 that I use as a media player an backup phone, that will typically pull 4 hours SoT in 24 hours up on most ROMs. Had an LG Optimus G that could have pulled that once in a while too.
As far as slippery - the build on the Z play is much like the SGS6 - which will slide off a table if you look at it wrong (which I do often when it's beeping it's frequent low battery alarms ) So that has always lived its' life in a case. The Moto will do the same, as Republic was offering free shipping with an accessory purchase, so I bought the incipio case.

including my past nexus phones the Z play is the fastest phone easily. The screen is beautiful as well. I'm stoked you got a great deal. I got mine on Newegg(nightmare don't ever order from them) for 429.
Give us your thoughts when you get it!

Just (finally) got the Z play tonight, and getting it set up. Had a little miscommunication wth republic, as my order went on backorder due to my case being backordered, and I thought it was due to the phone. Once that got sorted out, republic went out of their way to get it to me ASAP on their dime. My first impressions of their customer service is very positive.
The device is just amazing. Speed and responsiveness blow the S6 out of the water. Everything is just faster. I am VERY impressed. Only messed with the camera a little bit, but in a kitchen with incandescent lights, it took an acceptable shot in hdr wth the flash off. I don't anticipate any daylight camera issues, which is the bulk of my camera use. I can't visually tell the difference in resolution between the Sammy and Moto displays, but the Moto is brighter at any given % brightness setting. Better display in my book.
It appears to be on the standard RETUS software channel, and did not even have republic's app installed on arrival. Activation just required installing the app, verifying account info, and done. I was expecting to be in a 100% black hole of service at home, based on T-Mobile's maps. To my surprise, I get 2 to 3 bars of LTE (-118 dbm on LTE monitor app, so very weak signal) that yields 10mbps down and 2 up. As compared to any ATT device on my microcell, that gets about 1 down and 0.5 up. This is very encouraging, and I'm looking forward to testing coverage elsewhere. I have not yet tried the ATT sim in the Z play.
Biggest (pun intended) downside for me right now is the sheer size of the phone. 5 to 5.2 inch screens are my sweet spot, so this beast is going to take some getting used to. But I've done it before, so I can do it again!
Looking forward to being a member of this community! Thanks for the warm welcome.
Dan
Edit: sim swap appears to work fine. Phone even pulled correct APN without setting it up manually. Pretty slick!

Yes, the size of this phone is its only real fault but you'll get used to it after a week or so. I wish they would have trimmed the bezel a bit but they want the Z to be super thin which meant a bigger body to fit the internals, and since the Z line has to have a similar form factor because of the mods, the Z Play suffers from it. The only good thing about all this is the larger battery on our device.

That's a good point I hadn't really thought of - that the mods drive the size is clear - but I hadn't really considered that as a driver of the larger battery. I'll take it! ?
Edit: also, this thing plays way nicer with my Garmin watch. Sammy frequently had random disconnects. Rock solid so far with the Moto. The is my first ever "good" phone with a factory ROM that is close to stock Android.
Edit 2: trying like hell to kill it today. Seeing roughly 6% drain per hour with screen on, 1% or a hair more per hour screen off. The absolute best I've ever seen on any other phone I've had (Aria, S2, LGOG, S6, Moto E 2) has been 10% per hour screen on, and that was usually with a bunch of ebook reading, so very low demand on battery). I've got every possible battery draining service turned on on this thing, and it just barely sips power. On pace for something like 12 hours SoT at 32 hours off charger. How is this phone not hugely more popular??
Pics for edit 2 above.
I hope I don't get crucified for bumping this thread ?
I'm curious though if you ended up rooting this phone while still using Republic Wireless. According to your Profile you're using AT&T so I take it you ended up switching back. A couple of years ago I got hit with amnesia and I don't remember how on earth I rooted my Moto Z Play. Been using it with Republic Wireless since I got it back in 2016 and I apparently rooted my phone in January 2017 and it's worked (I think) but over the past year it's gotten slower and slower and has weird issues with connections, like sometimes when I receive a call as soon as I answer it the phone makes a beeping noise 3 times then hangs up. Decided I would try upgrading the phone to Oreo but I have no idea how to do this since my phone is rooted and I don't remember how to unroot it
